The Debate That Changed the Game for 2024
When the history books are written about the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the first and only debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will stand out as a pivotal moment. Following Biden’s widely criticized performance, the political landscape shifted dramatically, leading to his decision to step down and allow Vice President Kamala Harris to step in as the Democratic nominee. Now, as Harris prepares to face off against Trump in the second debate of the election season, the stakes could not be higher for either candidate.
Scheduled to take place in Philadelphia, the upcoming debate offers a crucial opportunity for both candidates to sway undecided voters and gain an edge in what is shaping up to be a tight race. For Harris, the debate is a chance to prove herself against Trump, introducing her vision and leadership style to those who may feel they don’t know her well enough. Meanwhile, Trump will be looking to capitalize on the platform to shape Harris’s public image and regain momentum that has been slipping since the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

While this debate is unlikely to have the seismic impact of the Biden-Trump clash earlier in the year, experts say it still holds significant weight. David Greenberg, a history professor and debate expert, explained, “We’re not going to see anything as dramatic as what happened with Biden, but debates always matter.” In this case, it may be a defining moment for Harris, who, despite her years as vice president, remains somewhat unfamiliar to many voters.
For Harris, this is more than a routine debate—it’s an opportunity to demonstrate her leadership on the national stage. Political analyst Alan Schroeder, a scholar on presidential debates, notes that Harris is currently enjoying a positive trajectory but must sustain that momentum. “The question is, can she build on her momentum, or is it fleeting? This debate gives her a critical chance to demonstrate her capabilities in a very public, and often tricky, setting.”
In contrast, Trump is a known entity to most voters, but his debate performance has been inconsistent. While he has often managed to dominate GOP primary debates, his struggles in general election debates are well-documented. His 2016 performances against Hillary Clinton, for instance, were far from stellar, and even his victory over Biden earlier this year was due more to Biden’s weaknesses than his own strengths.
The real challenge for Trump may lie in his handling of the debate with Harris. Given her status as both a woman and a person of color, political commentators suggest Trump will need to navigate the event carefully to avoid being perceived as disrespectful. As Schroeder puts it, “Trump has struggled in the past when dealing with female and nonwhite opponents, and it will be important for him to keep his tone in check.”
While few debates change the trajectory of a campaign, some do become significant turning points. The most famous example remains the 1960 debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, where Kennedy’s youthful, telegenic appearance contrasted sharply with Nixon’s tired and perspiring demeanor under the studio lights. In this case, both Trump and Harris must seize the moment to shape the final stages of their campaigns.
With just two months remaining until Election Day, every opportunity counts. For Harris, the debate offers a path to solidify her place as a capable leader, while for Trump, it’s a moment to regain control and rally his base. What happens in Philadelphia could play a decisive role in determining the next president of the United States.
