Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University

On April 8, 2024, at 3:18 p.m., those of us in Western New York will experience a little less than four minutes of darkness. The total solar eclipse, which occurs when the disk of the moon completely covers the sun, is extremely rare. It’s so rare that it usually only occurs in one location every 300 to 400 years.

To prepare for this exciting event, I have designated April 2023–April 2024 the Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University.

Some of you attended the “Countdown to Totality” open house on April 8, when we kicked off the Year of the Eclipse. That was just the beginning. Throughout the year, the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium will feature public programming that focuses on the main players in an eclipse—the sun, moon, and earth—as well as eclipse mythology, history, safety, and connections to art.

Kicking off the Year of the Eclipse at Buffalo State University with the "Countdown to Totality" event held on April 8, 2023.

It begins with “Moons: World of Mystery” this Friday, May 5, at 7:00 p.m. and will be repeated every Friday through June 10 (except for May 19). Fittingly, the planetarium will end each program with a laser show set to songs from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon immediately afterward at 8:30 p.m. Check out the planetarium’s event page to see more programming in the weeks and months to come and to purchase tickets.

In addition, faculty members across campus are encouraged to tie the total solar eclipse into their courses over the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters. Kevin Williams, associate professor of earth sciences and planetarium director, will work with the provost and deans to connect with faculty to get them excited and prepared. Dr. Williams and Mary Beth Wojtaszek, associate events manager, are also co-chairing the campus Eclipse Task Force to connect with other offices and departments across campus.

I know that by the time the total eclipse occurs next April, we’ll all be ready!

Okay, I  saw the comment above on a YouTube video and...wow.

Buckle in because I am about to rant.

If you can’t read it from the picture, the comment says:

Morwenna was very nasty towards Ossie. She always had very ugly words and just treated him like trash upon the first acquaintance.

I’ll start with their first meeting in the show. George, and Elizabeth, introduce her to Osborne not only to advance themselves socially, but also to punish her for attending Clowance’s christening. 

Already off to a very inauspicious start.

‘Our cousin, Miss Chynoweth. The Reverend Osborne Whitworth.’

‘Shall we assail the gavotte, Miss Chynoweth?’

‘Oh! I hope you’ll excuse me, Sir; I’m not fond of dancing.’

‘That can only be because your partners thus far have lacked expertise. Allow a master to initiate you in the pleasures.’

Morwenna is immediately at a disadvantage in this situation. She’s a young, inexperienced girl who probably never expected to have to negotiate this sort of social ritual; she’s from an impoverished branch of the already impoverished family tree. 

Even so, she’s as polite as possible, follows social conventions, all while subtly attempting to reject Osborne as gently as possible. He doesn’t take no for an answer, and even manages to sneak a double entendre into his invitation. You can feel Morwenna’s discomfort, and you can certainly see it when she looks for Elizabeth for help and guidance (and finds none). 

She is doing everything right by the standards of the time. 

In the books it’s worse. George has pretty much made up his mind about Osborne as a suitor when the first Mrs Whitworth has barely been dead a week. 

Completely unbeknownst to Morwenna, when she does first meet Osborne, George is trying to figure out which of the men he’s considering would be the best match. Unfortunately for Morwenna, Osborne is one of the suitors she pays attention to, however innocently:

As for Mowenna, she saw this tall, loud-voiced, affected young clergyman as only a partner to step with on the floor and listen to afterwards. She was enjoying the dance and the unexpected attentions of a number of young men. But it was a superficial enjoyment, as her whole existence in Truro had been this Christmas time. 

She’s a young girl enjoying a party, as any young girl has the right to do. She’s enjoying real male attention for the first time, and it must be quite overwhelming to someone like Morwenna; the eldest daughter of a dean from an impoverished family. Still, her thoughts are constantly on Drake, and her inability to reconcile her very strong feelings for him with the reality of her position and duty.

Point being, she’s polite enough to Osborne, even if her heart isn’t really in it. Which is unfortunate for her, because George Warleggan is in charge of her future...

George went some way to be pleasant to Ossie Whitworth, and before he left invited him to call on them in the new year in Truro. Somehow, in the course of the casual conversation, the name of Miss Chynoweth happened to occur, and the Reverend Osborne, whose sensibilities were not entirely dulled by his conceit, raised an eyebrow. He knew better than to pursue the subject as this juncture, but the seed had been planted.

It’s all organised before Morwenna hears anything about it, before she’s really had a chance to speak to Osborne properly in any capacity. 

It was clear from Morwenna’s face in the flickering candlelight that the news was indeed a shock to her, and not, as George predicted, a pleasant shock.

Morwenna just stood there silently weeping.

‘Come, my dear,’ Elizabeth said, impatience creeping into her voice, not because she felt impatient but to hide the sympathy that she felt she should not show.

Morwenna said at last: ‘I do not care for him; how can he care for me? We have exchanged as much intimate talker together as would two whist players of an afternoon. What can he know of me or I of him?’

‘He knows enough to wish to make you his wife.’

‘But I do not wish to be his wife! I do not wish to be anyone’s wife as  yet. Have I not pleased you? Are you displeased with my behaviour as governess to Geoffrey Charles?’

She doesn’t stand a chance, George has already made his decision, so when the two finally interact again, she’s at a terrible disadvantage, and very miserable. Imagine being 19 and told you are to marry a man you don’t love or even really know anything about (all whilst being in love with someone else).

Their second meeting iis slightly different. Morwenna remains polite, but  much more proactive in trying to discourage Osborne’s interest in her (if she can’t change George’s mind, she can try to change Osborne’s).

 She listens to him politely, but makes their lack of similar interests very clear.

‘Do you play whist?’

‘Not at all.’

She doesn’t enjoy dancing, she doesn’t play whist. They have nothing in common, any sensible person would see they’re incompatible people. Not Osborne.

‘...To comfort me as only a wife can. And now I know my sentiments are returned.’

‘I’m not at all sure they are returned.’

‘Your hesitancy does you credit.’

Her discomfort is incredibly clear. She’s still polite, up to the moment she pulls her hand away when he kisses it.

The conversation is much the same in the book, with this extra insight into Morwenna’s thoughts:

Being a modest girl, in whom further modesty had been instilled as a Christian virtue by both her father and her mother, she found herself complimented against her will by his proposal; and although she was adamantly against it, she racked her brains as to how she could convince Ossie that she was not for him, without hurting his feelings.

It didn’t work.

So where this idea that Morwenna is rude to Osborne comes from is beyond me. She goes out of her way to be polite to him regardless of her own feelings and discomfort throughout the ‘courtship’.

Besides, even if Morwenna had used ugly words or ‘treated him like trash’ would that have given Osborne the right to use and abuse her in the way he did right from their wedding night? Absolutely not.

What is your opinion on DH's interpretation of the Morwenna/Ossie storyline? I personally feel that Osbourne's casting is pretty good, but the script is portraying him in far too foppish a manner.

I don’t think the script has made him too foppish. His first appearance in the books is in ‘Demelza’, at Demelza’s first ball:

Then a man called Whitworth, good-looking but dressed in an absurdity of fashion, pressed her for the second.

And then:

‘A clergyman?’ she said in a puzzled voice, looking at her partner’s double-breasted cutaway coat, canary embroidered waistcoat, brown silk breeches and striped stockings. ‘No, I would not have guessed it.’The newly ordained vicar of St Tudy and St Wen squeezed her hand.‘Why not, eh, why not?’‘The one I know at Grambler wears a patched suit an’ a straw wig.’‘Oh, pooh, no doubt some poor little clerk doing duty for his master.’‘What are you?’ she asked. ‘A bishop?’Whitworth bowed low. ‘No, mem, not yet. But with your encouragement, mem, I soon would be.’‘I didn’t know clergymen danced,’ she said.‘It is an accomplishment some of us have, mem.’‘Like bears?’ she suggested, looking at him.Whitworth broke into a low laugh. ‘Yes, mem, and we can hug too.’‘Oh, I’m that frightened.’ She bowed to him with a little pretended shiver.The young man’s eyes kindled. He could hardly wait until they came together again to continue.

He is described as a ‘fop’, though that’s perhaps not the word I’d use - though Ross certainly does, reminding Demelza that she’s met the ‘posturing fop’ before. But certainly overly-concerned with fashion and appearance. In The Black Moon, when George is looking around for a suitable prospect for Morwenna, he thinks this:

First, he was a clergyman, and who better to marry a dean’s daughter? Second, he was a widower with two young children, whose need of a new wife must be urgent. (George noted that his recent bereavement had not prevented his appearance in a brilliant green cut-away coat and lemon yellow gloves.)

Again and again, Osborne is utterly preoccupied with his clothes. It’s something that I feel they’ve almost played down, in fact, in the show - though in fairness, much of the preoccupation is conveyed through narration or POV sections, rather than words.

In terms of the storyline itself, I’m disappointed in some aspects, but generally quite happy. Osborne’s threat of hitting her is something that I wish had been done differently. He hits her in the book, on their wedding night:

Once she resisted and once he hit her, but after that she made no protest. So eventually he laid her naked on the bed, where she curled up like a frightened snail.

Then he knelt at the side of the bed and said a short prayer before he got up and began to tickle her bare feet before he raped her.

But the threat of hitting her again...it undermines the way in which Morwenna becomes to completely dominated by Osborne, very quickly. It’s not the threat of physical violence that does it, or at least not of that sort of violence. It’s being raped, over and over. It’s her sheer disgust for him and yet her absolute knowledge that she cannot escape this situation except through death. She has no power in the situation (at least until later, after their son is born) and she’s not equipped to gain any control of it. She is absolutely his victim.

So I wish they hadn’t done that, but it’s a relatively understandable way of showing the dynamics of the relationship within the confines of the show.
