it’s literally like. you aren’t the son your father wanted. you aren’t the man he wanted. you love him. you hate him. you want to make him proud more than anything. you want him to love you. you’ve dedicated your entire life to being a soldier in his war and he still doesn’t see you as an equal. his war is bad, wrong. he is absent more than he is there. you can only be angry at him when he is gone. he would die for you. he’s never been proud of you. he’s a hard man and you want to be a hard man too but you aren’t. you can’t.
am i talking about margaret or dean?

In "Investigative Journalism”, S1E13 of Commuity, Abed compares Jeff to Hawkeye from M*A*S*H. Later in the episode, Jeff affectionately calls Abed “Radar”. Both of these comparison bear out, essentially. Jeff, like Hawkeye, is a sarcasm-based wit stuck in a place he doesn’t want to be who nevertheless forms close bonds with the companions he finds himself with and not-infrequently finds himself the ringleader of some scheme in the hope of brightening the experience. In addition, they both put up fronts of jackassery that conceal both more care for others and more personal issues than they want to let on. (Granted, Jeff’s facade of self-interest is a lot more complete and convincing than Hawkeye’s, but being a doctor in a warzone will bring out different parts of a man than being a lawyer in Nowhere, Colorado.)
Meanwhile Abed, like Radar, is a somewhat odd character. Heavily Autistic-coded, his actual level of childishness and naivete can see-saw rather dramatically based on the needs of the plot or even just a single scene or joke. Further, both of them are implied to have low-level psychic powers: in Radar’s case telepathy and future-vision, while Abed can, to quote a TVTropes contributor, “Just see the fourth wall out of the corner of his eye”. But why stop there? I say we work our way through the rest of the main cast and find all the parallels even if it kills us!
Now, it may be tempting to look at the Dean’s endless string of fanciful costumes and cry “That’s our Klinger!”, but I would caution against choosing a Klinger based on drag alone. What are Klinger’s traits outside the cross-dressing? Working-class demeanor, scheming/angle-finding philosophy, distinctly gray-market sensibilities. The Dean has...none of these. So what is he? Well, he’s an authority figure over the rest of the main characters, but neither they nor he are particularly inclined to act like it. He’s a bit of an awkward bumbler, leading one to wonder how he got into his position. In the eyes of those under him, he’s not exactly respected...but he is loved. The others will frequently agree to help him, despite them both knowing that he couldn’t really force them to. In other words, Craig Pelton is not Max Klinger...he’s Henry Blake.
The choice for Frank seems fairly obvious. Who’s our over-the-top antagonist with more ego than intelligence, who’s incompetent at his job but keeps it anyway, who can be incredibly petty in his vendettas against the other main cast, who is constantly finding new depths of assholery to sink to, but the sheer patheticness of the man and his life almost leaves us feeling sorry for him? Forward Senior Chang. I almost made Pierce Frank, since he spends more time with the rest of the study group, analogous to Frank living in the Swamp, until I realized, no. Pierce isn’t Frank. He’s Charles. He’s not just rich but generationally rich. He’s a frequent and unthinking bigot. He’s got a notable sense of superiority and feels that he should always be listened to. He’s overall kind of an asshole, sometimes to the point of outright antagonism, but he’s at least nominally in the friend group anyway because we’re all just kinda used to him, and he consistently shows just enough human decency to keep us all on a string.
Britta is our Margaret. What, just because she’s blond and has some sexual tension with our Hawkeye? No, no, there’s more than that. Differences in specifics aside, they’re both passionately committed to their respective ideals. They’re both intense, and uninclined to tone themselves down for anything or anybody. They’re both unpopular because of this, and they know it, and it kinda hurts (“Knock knock, who’s there? Cancer? Oh, come on in, we thought it was Margaret.” would have fit right in in the “cup of coffee” speech.) And the narrative itself sees to go back and forth on whether they truly deserve to be  dumped on as they are.
We can’t afford to be constrained by racial or gender lines; Shirley is clearly our Mulcahy.  Not only because of her devout Christianity, but because she uses her faith to disguise and hide from parts of her personality that she doesn’t want to deal with, including a greater capacity for violence than she wants to admit to and a manipulative streak. However, like Mulcahy, she does genuinely do good for others, and inspires others to do good for each other.
We’re running a little thin on characters now. So, Troy...hmmmm. I think he’s the best match with Trapper/BJ. The parallels aren’t super perfect. Okay to be honest it’s mostly based on the fact that he’s most viewed in the context of his close friendship with another character. But I still think it basically works. But that...leaves Annie to be our Klinger. Which, as far as I can see, Does Not Work. But who else can she be? Sidney? I mean they’re both Jewish, but no. Nobody really fits Sidney, not even Britta the psychology major. Lieutenant Dish? Pfft, no. Lieutenant Julie-From-Welcome-Back-Kotter? Maybe a little better, but no. Besides, they’re the last main characters from their respective shows. But how do we justify it? This, I leave as an exercise to the reader.

M*A*S*H CIVILIAN AU.
Our cast of characters, instead of finding themselves in the midst of the Korean War, instead make up the staff of the Spruce Harbor General Hospital (in Maine) or Calabasas General Hospital (in California) depending on the setting of the thread (my default will be Spruce Harbor).
Hawkeye, Trapper, and B.J. are surgeons, Hawkeye being the most senior.
Father Mulcahy is the hospital chaplain.
Radar works the front desk, but runs the entire operation, as we all know. He’s still psychic, and he’s still a teenager. Nobody questions this.
Klinger helps Radar at the front desk, and is also in charge of business and finance.
Sherman Potter and Henry Blake are joint deans of the hospital.
Frank Burns, Charles Winchester, and Margaret Houlihan are overly nosy and pushy hospital administrators, and the bane of everyone’s existence.
It is quite possibly the least efficient and disastrously run operation imaginable, but they still manage to get their work done and have a stellar record.

Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories. See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag some people to take part.  Tagged by @sparrowsarus
If you want to do this, consider yourself tagged!
1. So Close (WIP, Ted Lasso, Tedbecca)
Rebecca blames the bloody biscuits.
2. Breathe Deep the Gathering Gloom (Ted Lasso, Gen, Ted & Beard)
The alarm blares, jarring Beard's already frazzled nerves, until fumbling, he manages to slap it into silence.
3. Fingertips (Ted Lasso, Ted/Trent)
Trent Crimm (newly independent) carried with him a secret.
4. Bird by Bird (Ted Lasso, Gen Diamond Dogs)
“I’m so proud of her, but I just…feel like I’m being left behind.”
5. Onward (Ted Lasso, tedbecca)
The papery rustling of the wind through fields of corn was the first thing he became aware of.
6. Over Troubled Water (Ted Lasso, Gen/Preship, Ted & Rebecca)
“Hiya, Keeley!”
7. Heart (MASH, Hawkeye/BJ)
BJ’s eyes shot open as he awoke with a gasp.
8. Good Night Sleeping Beauty (MASH, Hawkeye/Trapper)
When the truck rolled to a stop, Trapper gave Radar’s cuff a little tug.
9. On Writing Panic Attacks (Original Essay)
One morning three years or so ago I was driving to work.
10. Humming Down the Night (MASH, Hawkeye/Trapper)
It wasn’t hard to sweet talk Henry into giving Frank the first shift in post op.
11. A Little Comfort in the Night (MASH, Gen, Hawkeye & Charles)
Charles Emerson Winchester the third’s precious sleep was being interrupted yet again.
12. Families (MASH, Gen, Hawkeye & Margaret)
It pleased Margaret Houlihan to find post op a model of order and efficiency at the start of her shift.
13. The Feline Incident (Schitt’s Creek, David/Patrick
David knew something was wrong the minute Patrick greeted him at the door.
14. Rosetta (MASH, Gen, Hawkeye)
The closer the bus gets to Crabapple Cove, the more distant, the more flat the world around him appears.
15. Regrets (ST: Disco, Paul/Hugh)
“Ohmygodohmygodhmygod-”
16. Ways McShep Could Have Happened: A Ficlet Collection (SGA, McShep)
“What did you touch.”
17. Heat (Due South, Fraser/RayK)
The summer brought an unexpected heat and though the taiga east of Inuvik offered shelter in the shade of it’s evergreen trees, the plains to the west held no escape the intense sunlight.
18. Grounding (SPN, Sam/Gabriel)
Sam usually knows it’s coming before it hits.
19. Under the Sway of the Sycamore Trees (SPN, Gen, Sam & Gabriel)
Once the initial shock wore off and explanations were given which, to Gabriel, felt like a semi-comprehensible whirlwind of words, Dean gave him a sound thump on the back and, to the archangel’s surprise, Sam enveloped him in a warm hug.
20. Bring Me Back Home (SPN, Gen)
“And you’re sure this will work, Rowena?”
BONUS: Because going 20 fics back doesn’t get me to two of my favorite stories I wrote:
There is Some Relief in Letting Go (Twin Peaks, Gen-mostly)
He is letting Her go.
Decomposition (SPN, Cas-centric with Dean/Cas mention)
I pray to thee o’ Castiel to give me a call as soon as you can; we’ll pick you up.
It's the Third Time that Counts (SGA, McShep)
“When are you two getting married?”
The Valentine's Day Curse (SGA, McShep)
“…but seriously Carson, I can walk. Kind of.”
Patterns: I’m not sure I really see any patterns, other than a lot of the first lines are short, with some notable exceptions.
Favorite first line: I’m not sure I’m really that gifted at first lines, tbh.  I should work on that.  I think it’s a tie between Onward’s " The papery rustling of the wind through fields of corn was the first thing he became aware of.” and Breathe Deep the Gathering Gloom’s “The alarm blares, jarring Beard's already frazzled nerves, until fumbling, he manages to slap it into silence. “

you know what i’ll say it margaret could do “my dad was an obsessed bastard and i didn’t deserve what he put on me” after beating the shit out of a copy of herself and dean winchester could do “he's such a wonderful man and i’ve just been disappointing him my whole life” after his father spends an entire day putting him down and fist fighting with his gay friends

5 Shows and Some Questions
Rules: Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions. Don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
thank you for the tag @storytime-reviews :D
Red Band Society
Gilmore Girls
M*A*S*H*
Glee
Please Like Me
Who is your favourite character in 1? Kara is definitely the most entertaining lol
What is your favourite episode of 4? S03E14 “On My Way” - the one where Sebastian Smythe showed he had a heart and I fell in love with him 5eva <3
What is your favourite season of 5? oh god literally all of them ummm season 3 coz that’s when we meet Ella :3
Who is your favourite couple in 3? M*A*S*H* didn’t really have couples lol but I do love when Hawkeye and Houlihan make out in the finale :p
Who is your favourite couple in 2? Does non-canon count? non-canon totally counts because Rory and Paris forever - forget Team Jess or Dean or Logan. Paris and Rory would’ve been amazing
What is your favourite episode of 1? "How Did We Get Here”, where it’s filling in all the weird situations we see at the start of the episode lol
What is your favourite episode of 5? S03E04 “Natural Spring Water” - again, because it’s where we meet Ella, but also because it’s just so silly and fun and I know it by heart lol
What is your favourite season of 2? I think season 3 is my favourite? I love the storylines running through it and some of the big episodes like the dance marathon and Rory graduating Chilton
How long have you watched 1? Red Band Society only has 13 episodes so I watched them all when they were released and I’ve rewatched it at least once every year since lol I absolutely love it
How did you become interested in 3? we used to watch it as a family when I was a kid so it’s just been part of my life since I was like 6 years old lol I bought the box set a few years ago and watch a disc or two when I’m in the mood for it :)
Who is your favourite actor in 4? Tied between Grant Gustin and Darren Criss
Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? those are 3 of my 5 favourite shows, I literally can’t pick between them, they fulfill different purposes in my life 🤣
Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3? I’ve watched them both all the way through - I guess M*A*S*H* wins on account of longevity tho lol
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? can I be Rachel Berry and finally make Rachel/Quinn happen? :p
Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? *cackles maniacally at the thought of this*
Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? I reckon Kara and Dash could’ve been a good couple tbh
Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? Please Like Me
Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? Gilmore Girls
Tagging: anyone with a “d” in their URL ;)

Sam & Hawkeye (not THAT one)
THIS one!
Tumblr media
For my 200 Follower Celebration, this is the request from @ladylilithprime who wanted to know how I think Sam would get along with Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce. (aka “Hawkeye” from M*A*S*H)
- at first I’m not sure Sam would take him too seriously if they first met while Hawkeye was cooling his heels in “The Swamp”, complete with moonshine still and old ratty bathrobe that would DOUBTLESSLY remind him of Dean’s “dead-guy-robe”
- but I also don’t think it’d take him long to see the other, deeper side of Hawkeye. The part that cares almost too much about everyone, who doesn’t care which side of the war someone fights on because he’ll treat them all, who refuses to take a life, who will do anything and everything for his patients even if it means bending or breaking the rules.
- he would also see how Hawkeye uses humor to cope with the horrors around him and that’s something he’s become well accustomed to himself.
- Hawkeye has seen enough soldiers and enough people damaged by war to see the trauma Sam hides under the surface.
- at some point Hawkeye and BJ (or Trapper if it’s earlier in the series) will get Sam sloshed on their rot-gut and things will start spilling out. Maybe more things than Sam ever meant to share with anyone. But they don’t judge him.      ~ Sam let’s spill about what he perceives as some of his f***-ups and they listen to him. Sometimes they offer advise and let him know they’ve seen enough guys in combat to know that mistakes happen, and sometimes you don’t have all the information. And sometimes you can try your best and still fail. And in the end, what’s important isn’t whether or not you’ve never made a mistake, (because newsflash, everyone has) it’s whether you try to learn from them.      ~ Sam at some point also lets slip about some of the things that happened in hell. (he was really REALLY drunk. And some part of him felt a relief at being with people from another world. Like, if he said too much it wouldn’t really matter because he’d be going back eventually anyway) And I’m not sure how much Hawkeye would assume was literal and how much was Sam’s way of putting whatever happened to him into a reference he could somehow make sense of.      ~ Hawkeye makes a call to Sydney to see if he could swing by and help out this poor guy. In the meantime, he just lets Sam vent about it all and reassures him that NOTHING that had been done to him is his fault. Nothing. Doesn’t matter if he was partially responsible for being there, those other people were the ones who decided that torture was an acceptable response, not him. And he also reassures him that he isn’t weak for still feeling the scars from all of it.
- Sam has enough experience with prank wars that he helps Hawkeye and BJ set up some doozies for Charles. (Sam isn’t amused that this poncy guy from Boston shares the same last name as him, even if he DOES have good taste in music.)
- at some point I think Hawkeye will realize that this guy isn’t actually delusional about some of these things he’s talked about.
- and he figures even if he IS delusional, he still obviously leads a rough life so he gives him some crash-courses on first-aid techniques beyond what he already knows.
- at SOME point something will come up where Sam has to stitch someone up and Hawkeye is impressed with his abilities in that department.
- overall, I think once they look past the surface, they’d get along swimmingly and they’d both wind up learning some important things from each other.
(Thank you Lil! That was actually a lot of fun to ponder. As an aside, I also think Sam would get a kick out of some of the other people there at the M*A*S*H 4077. I think he would do anything in his power to protect Radar, because that boy really IS “too precious for this world.” I think he’d be a bit perplexed at Klinger, but considering the time-frame Sam’s from, he might assume the guy was trying to get kicked out of the army by making people assume he was gay instead of insane, and would try to be fully supportive of him in that. I think he and Col. Potter would eventually get along as the Colonel would remind him of the better parts of both of his two main father-figures: his own Dad’s military habits but with Bobby’s down-to-earth good sense and straight-forwardness. I think it’d take a while to get on Houlihan’s good side but he’d see her commitment to doing her job well and thereby saving as many people as possible and figure it was worth it. I don’t think he’d give Burns the time of day. *LOL* And he’d surprise Father Mulcahy with his fluency in Latin. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my heacanons!)
