1. If you had to change the pairing’s very first meeting, how would you change it?

Ooh okay, so since we don’t know exactly how it went (but it must have gone well. cause. yknow. look at them :3) I actually like that there’s no official meeting because yknow. Room for creative interpretation ahah. For example, I can picture Mori deciding Dazai is out of control and needs someone to reign him in, then he profiles the PM and decides on Oda. Someone who has skills worthy of Dazai’s respect, yet is harmless to the PM; someone who has a temperament that means he can put up with Dazai for a while and still be eccentric enough that he’ll keep Dazai entertained in turn. And then maybe Mori sends Dazai off to this bar he knows Oda frequents with some bad prompt like ‘assess this guy if he’s a threat to the pm’ and it. takes off from there.

however! i will say if i absolutely had to change their first meeting, i’d probably make it so that dazai and oda find each other curiously irritating; maybe dazai’s annoyed by dense naivety and maybe oda would rather deal with less hostile and less “executive-level-meaning-i-can-fire-you” people. maybe dazai is so irritated he ends up getting oda kicked out of the mafia and oda winds up joining the agency. let’s say uhhh eventually, skk takes down mimic and this leaves the mafia pretty unstoppable. skk is at the height of their talents. so oda’s given the task of stopping them, starting with dazai. (yeah, it’s hard picturing enemies to friends to lovers odz for me too lmaooo) but i think...maybE? it could work?

or maybe the tragedy is that it wouldn’t; that oda needs to die for dazai to learn to live and that they always find out too late. idk. :) 

9. Favorite aspect of them/their relationship dynamics?

Mmm. Gonna pick two examples of their. 1) Relationship dynamic: soft: one of them being silly, the other humoring him, and both of them genuinely enjoying their time together. 2) Mutual care for one another; Dazai may not understand Oda’s refusal to kill but he will respect it. There’s not a lot he gives a fuck about, but Oda and his morals are exempt to that. And for Oda, obviously he sees Dazai as a dear friend (reading the light novel, you can tell just how much exactly), and he does want the best for Dazai, even if all the troublesome little things made it hard for him to express this.

11. If they aren’t a canon pairing, how would you get them together?

Being the hoe I am, I keep hoping Asagiri will give Dazai the book and he’ll either make Beast happen or bring Oda and kids back to life. 

Okay but hmm. If I had to make them happen in canon, I’m like 99% sure, they’d get their shit together eventually. Maybe they have a shit day, maybe they get hammered, maybe they start talking about why one of them wants to die and one of them doesn’t want to kill and it starts with that understanding (oh of course, insert the awkward morning after; did we really do a cheesy heart to heart drunk? yea) and then eventually yknow. the feeling feelings start going at a alarming rate; yknow. i’d like oda to realize first aha bc funny. and then someday dazai passingly has a thought: “oh...odasaku looks really handsome today,’ and then. oh. OH. and then yknow he realizes oda’s starting to look at him differently like he wants even more from dazai but doesn’t think he has the right to ask. LONG STORY SHORT, I DONT CARE HOW, make them get together, pls, thank you :)

14. Is there a pairing that you think rivals them?

For me, not in BSD at least. For context, I’m not really an skk shipper although I get it (for extra context no one asked for, i ship shizaya in drrr! pretty hilarious enough and they’re like skk but with more hate lmao); for other dazai ships, similar thing. 

But I think it ultimately just means. Looking at Odazai and believing what they have is so insanely off the charts.

This is a loaded question, dear nonnie! Coming right out of the gates with a toughie huh?

Soukoku is a behemoth of a ship. Getting initiated into the fandom, it’s probably one of the first ships you’ll see. With soukoku fanart popping up in the bungou stray dogs tag all the time and, out of 13144 bsd fics on ao3, 5655 of them including soukoku, it’d be hard not to see the immense fanbase it has. So, we come to your question nonnie: what makes soukoku so popular?

Please note: this comes from the perspective of a relative nonshipper, and I only speak for my own opinions and observations. I’d love to hear anything you have to add!

1. Foe Yay

Foe yay is a term used by TV Tropes to define the shipping of two characters who are enemies, whether it’s because the operate on opposite sides of the law or they just don’t like each other. Overall it boils down to this: the hostile tension between them can be easily read as romantic or even sexual if you choose to read it as such.

Media is up to interpretation, so where one person sees bitter enemies, another sees a viscous round if flirtation. Neither are wrong interpretations, even in regards to the canon legitimacy of a ship- I hold this viewpoint because I believe canon can be anything you want it to be; it’s an open field to sow the seeds for creativity. So, in any situation where they are together, there’s automatically a possibility for that moment to be regarded as a ship.

2. Their history

Let’s be real: people love a story where two characters know each other like the back of their hand. While that may not be the case, it’s a pretty solid fact that of every character in the series (that’s still alive- sorry, oda), Chuuya is the one who knows Dazai best. Everyone in the ADA may (or may not have) heard about his time in the mafia, they may have heard him talk about his darker days, and they can see what he’s capable of, but they weren’t there with him. Chuuya was.

Chuuya is the only one that’s still around who, through being partnered with Dazai in the past, knows that darker side of him the best. Akutagawa, as his subordinate, only knows the version he saw as an underling. Chuuya saw more of the real him as an (almost?) equal. Dazai isn’t very open with his personal details; he never was. But there are certain things Chuuya doesn’t need told like others might because he was there, and that sets the foundation for a nice potential ship.

3. Their partnership

I don’t remember the exact phrasing, but soukoku was and is described as an ultimate powerhouse, an unstoppable duo. In order to be part of a team that rises to such infamy, there has to be a certain bond, one where the members can work together and trust that the half of the job that isn’t theirs will get done efficiently. 

Not only do they have that certain bond, one where they can trust the other’s strengths and play off them to emphasize their own, it’s almost like the two characters were made for each other - in a way. In terms of their abilities, Chuuya’s could legitimately kill him when he uses it, and he has no way to stop it. The only way it can be stopped is through Dazai- he’s dependent on Dazai if he wants to perform to the best of his abilities (slight pun intended). Dazai, however, would be incomplete in the team without Chuuya; where he’s tactics and intimidation, Chuuya’s more the powerhouse and action guy he needs. While capable independently, the two are better together. They allow the other to perform just a little better than they would alone.

4. Their trust

Because of this partnership, the two of them trust each other. Chuuya has literally admitted this to Dazai (yeah I see you “I used Corruption because I trusted you” squad) They know what the other is capable of- Chuuya is especially aware of Dazai’s darker habits he tries to hide- and Dazai knows how Chuuya will respond and trusts him to be loyal and dependable as he’s always been.

5. Their current bond

William Shakespeare once said (something along the lines of), 

“Love me or hate me, both are in my favor. If you love me, I’ll always be in your heart…If you hate me, I’ll always be in your mind.” 

What that means is that any strong emotions, whether positive or negative, towards a person will put them in the forefront of your mind. When you have a crush, you often think about them all the time, are reminded constantly of them, and have strong reactions when they are mentioned. When you hate someone, you tend to think about them all the time, are reminded constantly of them, and have strong reactions when they are mentioned. Thank you copy and paste.

Love and hate have very similar “symptoms,” so it’s easy to see why enemies could be viewed as lovers in denial. Let’s be real, denial is a sexy, sexy concept to play around with in fanfic. Who doesn’t love a good slowburn and some classic mutual pining?

Even now, in the current timeline, Dazai lives to pester Chuuya constantly, who is the perfect target with his temper and confrontational attitude towards Dazai. You know what that is? Chemistry. I’m not talking strictly romantic, either. As two characters, they go well together: they interact and bounce off each other in an entertaining and believable way.

Overall, soukoku is what I see as the most fundamental ship in any fandom. For Durarara, it was shizaya, for Voltron, it was klance- the whole “rivalry” thing seems to attract shippers, and for good reason. Soukoku has a few unique spins to it to help shippers make their point, and I know I’ve missed a lot of them in this quick little ask. Still, I hope this gives you an idea as to why I think it’s so popular!

11. What makes a great ship in your own opinion?

I think this is sort of hard to explain. I like history between characters, I like them having deep personal emotions about each other, I like them knowing each other, being casually intimate, being settled into each other’s space like they grew out of the same pot. This is why I usually prefer established relationships over getting together and why Satosugu was such a big fucking hit with me. I like that feeling of one person being the extension of another to the point you think of them more as a matching pair then two individuals. It’s hard to explain and obviously this is different for everyone, but it’s the closeness, the knowledge of each other that hooks me in. I don’t much care for the >.< do they like me like me part, I love a couple that has already settled into their dynamic. Also the reason I don’t remember shipping anything as hard as I ship Satosugu for a very very long time. Like most of the ships I remember having are like ‘oh I like this character and this is a popular ship for them so I’ll read that’. I like Izaya so I like Shizaya, I like Chuuya so I like Soukoku, I like Hawks so I like Dabihawks. It’s not that I hate Dazai or Shizuo or Dabi but they never quite reached my level of love for the guy I was actually there for you know. In Satosugu I do like Satoru a tiny bit more, but it does feel a lot more equal then all those other ships and I’m actually super invested in what will happen with Suguru not just for Satoru or the ship but for Suguru himself. It’s a rare one for me. I guess I’m picky with my love.

 19. Do you prefer fluff, angst, or smut for your ships?

I will always lean on the angst side cuz I’m horrible and like to take things I love apart to see what they are made of, but then again hurt just isn’t the same without comfort and I like my portion of the fluff too, tho usually that isn’t the part that will hook me. I’m ace so I’m not super interested in smut for my ships, it’s sort of a thing where I don’t mind if it’s included in the story, and I know fics that made me feel like :0 wow smut can actually be a wonderful tool to show intimacy :0. But I rarely actually look for it with express purpose to read just smut. Not much of a pwp person again, doesn’t hook me well. And I will usually get annoyed if it just comes out of left field and drives the plot to a halt *thinks angrily about that one miritama fic im still holding a grudge over*

  21. Have you ever received hate for a ship you liked? 

Hmmm, not as far as I can remember, but I think the reason for that is that 1. I surround myself with ppl who don’t really care about that sort of stuff or have similar shipping tastes as me 2. I don’t think I’m nearly important enough to have some rando come in and hate on my ships. Does that actually happen to ppl? I’d gather you’d have to be popular for that lmaoo. Also I think my tastes are p common so no one would really bother anyway. They may be something I’m forgetting, I was heavily involved into the roleplaying community up until a while back and if ur gonna find ship drama anyway it’s there, but I honestly can’t remember anything specific. Shrug emoji.
