I hope you, your friends, and your family are all staying safe during this arduous time.
As we struggle with the challenges of COVID-19 we have recently seen an incline in mental health disorders, relapse, and detox symptoms considered high risk. Cottonwood’s compassionate clinicians continue to serve those facing mental health, trauma and substance abuse challenges while taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our patients, our staff and their families.
Additionally, we have put together a list of providers that would like to donate time for first responders, physicians, and nurses who are on the front line of this pandemic right now as well as a list of providers who are currently providing Telehealth for patients. Let me know if you would like more info on either or would like to be added to one of the lists.
I’ve linked to my LinkedIn profile should you have further questions and the link to our website is also listed below. I look forward to hearing from you and your staff, and until then, know that I am at your service.
Sincerely,
Dawn LaCarte, MA, CASAC, CRC Clinical Outreach Liaison Cottonwood Tucson

How Can Mindfulness Help Mental Health?
It’s possible that you might have heard about mindfulness-based therapy at some point. This type of therapy is becoming more popular as a treatment for those who have mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders or depression problems. How can mindfulness help your mental health, though? Read on to learn more about mindfulness and just how useful it can be.
Mindfulness Can Have a Positive Impact on Mental Health
Mindfulness has the potential to have a positive impact on mental health. Mindfulness is about experiencing the present moment without judgment. It can help people to avoid getting caught up in past problems, and it helps people to get out of a negative headspace. That is why mindfulness-based therapy has become such a popular treatment method for various forms of anxiety and depression.
Using mindfulness techniques can potentially help people to reduce stress levels, regulate their emotions, reduce rumination, and cope with depression or anxiety problems. This is a useful practice that has been shown to work for many people. Mindfulness is often used in conjunction with other treatment methods to help people cope with problems. It could be an essential part of your strategy for bettering your mental health.
Is Mindfulness Better Than Medications?
Please note that mindfulness is not necessarily meant as a method to replace traditional treatment methods. Mindfulness works well to help people promote positivity in their lives. It can help to improve mental health over time, but it might be best to pair mindfulness with other treatments. Medications might be used in conjunction with mindfulness techniques to help a patient thrive.
You should also know that mindfulness can be even more helpful when you work with a skilled therapist. Many therapists used mindfulness-based techniques in their therapy sessions. A therapist can guide you to help you make the best use of mindfulness-based techniques. Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can benefit your mental health, but you shouldn’t think of it as a replacement for other treatments.
Mindfulness Is a Great Option
Mindfulness is a great option for you to consider if you want to improve your mental health. If you have problems and you want to start living more positively, then learning more about mindfulness will be beneficial. It’s still a good idea to seek the help of a professional when you’re in need, though.

Dealing with Social Anxiety
Social anxiety is something that many people suffer from. When you have a social anxiety problem, it can make it tough to deal with other people. You might want to go out and have fun like you used to, but you feel like it’s impossible to go out into the world. Some people with severe anxiety problems even have a tough time going to work in the morning due to crippling social anxiety.
Dealing with a social anxiety problem isn’t always going to be easy. This doesn’t mean that you need to give up, though. There are many ways that you can treat and cope with an anxiety problem. Read on to learn more about coping with social anxiety.
Seeking Professional Treatment
You should seek help when you are dealing with an anxiety problem. Anxiety is something that has the potential to harm your life in many ways. It can prevent you from being the person that you want to be if you give into it. Luckily, there are professionals who can assist you in overcoming your social anxiety problems.
Medications Can Help
Going to a doctor to get help for anxiety issues is important. It’s possible that the doctor will want to prescribe you some medication to help you cope with anxiety issues. There are a number of different anti-anxiety medications on the market that have helped people to overcome anxiety. This will likely be a piece of the puzzle when you’re trying to take care of an anxiety issue.
Therapy for Anxiety Problems
Seeking therapy for anxiety problems will also be a very good idea. Therapy will help you to understand your social anxiety better. A therapist can get to the bottom of what causes your anxiety so that you will be able to cope with it better. They also help you to recognize triggers for social anxiety so that you might be able to avoid having such severe problems.
Working with a therapist is a great way to get comfortable with social situations again. They are very understanding about the situation that you’re in, and they will be able to present many possible solutions to you. You don’t have to face anxiety alone when you have a therapist who can help you out.
Coping Mechanisms
Even after receiving treatment, it’s possible that you might have some anxiety problems while out in public. If you feel anxious or if you feel like you’re having an anxiety attack, it’ll be helpful to use certain coping mechanisms. Simply taking deep breaths and counting to ten can help you to calm yourself down. Focusing your mind and trying to stay calm is crucial when you suffer from anxiety, so take the time to learn about coping mechanisms with your therapist for further assistance.

What Is Behavioral Health?
If you’re not familiar with what behavioral health is, then you’ll be interested to hear more about it. Read on to examine precisely what behavioral health is and why it matters so much. You’ll learn how it differs from mental health and will have a much more thorough understanding of the topic.
Understanding Behavioral Health
Behavioral health refers to your behaviors and how those behaviors impact your overall health and well-being. There are some behaviors that have a positive impact on your health, and there are many others that have a negative impact. Behaviors such as your eating habits play a big role in determining how healthy you are, and there are other things to consider, such as smoking habits, drinking, and how much exercise you get.
The term behavioral health can actually refer to a large number of different behaviors. When you hear the term behavioral health being used in a professional capacity, it can also encompass mental health, psychiatric health, and more. Marriage and couples counselors also consider themselves to be behavioral health specialists. Basically, any aspect of your health that has to do with your behavior can loosely fall under the behavioral health umbrella.
What’s the Difference Between Behavioral Health and Mental Health?
You might get confused by just how broad the term behavioral health has become. What is the difference between behavioral health and mental health? Well, mental health can fall under the behavioral health umbrella since it is such a broad category. Behavioral health has the potential to impact both your mental health and your physical health.
Therefore, the difference between the two is that mental health is purely focused on the mental aspects of health. Behavioral health is a broader term that encompasses all types of health that can be impacted by behavioral choices. Certain behavioral health problems will not impact a person’s mental health, but those with mental health problems can benefit from using good behavioral health principles.
Your Behaviors Matter
Your behaviors really do matter, and you should try to live a healthy lifestyle. The choices that you make can change both your mental and physical states of well-being. If you want to live a happy life while trying to accomplish your goals, then working on your behavioral health is crucial. You can seek the help of a behavioral health specialist if you need advice on how to alter your behaviors positively.

How Sleep Can Help Improve Addiction
Addiction is something that can plague your life if you don’t seek treatment. The problem is that even once you have kicked an addiction, there will always be a possibility that you could relapse. Even having poor sleep habits can make your addiction worse. Take a look at the following ways that sleep can help to improve addiction listed below.
Sleep Deprivation Leads to Relapse
Sleep deprivation is a common reason that people who suffer from addiction wind up relapsing. Those who are addicted to alcohol might wind up turning to the bottle to try to help get some sleep. Of course, sleep problems can also be brought on by heavy drinking. The relationship between sleep problems and relapse into alcohol addiction help to drive home the point that sleep has an impact on addiction.
Restoring Regular Sleep Patterns
Restoring regular sleep patterns can help those with addiction to avoid the temptation of relapsing into old habits. Also, being able to get a good night’s rest makes it easier for people to live their lives as usual. When you get enough sleep, you’re going to have the ability to get up and perform your normal daily routine. You can go to work and do your necessary chores without it being a big deal.
Getting a solid night of sleep is essential when you want to avoid relapsing into addiction. Addicts have problems when their routine gets interrupted. You want to avoid disrupting this routine as much as possible. This is why taking the time to get a good night of rest is one of the best ways to battle addiction.
Sometimes Medications Might Be Necessary
There might be times where medications will be necessary for the treatment process. Some people suffer from insomnia, and this can make things very tough. An addict who also happens to be an insomniac will be very tempted to relapse. Sleep medications can help to combat this problem, but doctors will only use medications like this when it is appropriate to do so.
Other Ways to Help People Sleep
Medications aren’t the only way to help people get a good night’s rest. Patients also get good results by learning how to meditate so that they can calm themselves down for bedtime. Many counselors also help people to practice mindfulness-based therapy. This allows people to stay in the moment rather than staying awake and worrying about the things that are bothering them.
Other potential treatments for insomnia problems include massage therapy and relaxation therapy. You will be able to find a solution to your sleeping issues. Better sleeping habits will help to stave off addiction problems. It is an important part of the solution that you cannot ignore.

How to Improve Your Health at Work
So many people struggle with health problems due to having to sit at a desk for several hours per day. If you feel like you’re struggling with your health at work, then you might want to make a few changes. Look at the following ways to improve your health at work. They should help you to make some positive changes over time.
Avoid Work Snacks
Do you have co-workers who bring doughnuts or candies to work every single day? Snacks can be nice, and it’s normal to want to partake. The problem is that these could be adding hundreds of unnecessary calories to your daily intake. Avoid work snacks so that you can stay at a reasonable calorie count without having to skip real meals.
Drink More Water
Drinking more water can be very helpful, too. If you find yourself getting hungry at work, then know that filling up on water can help you to stave off that hunger until you get home. You should eat lunch, but the water can help you to avoid that urge to snack. Also, staying hydrated is good for your health.
Exercise When You Can
Get as much exercise as you can while you’re at work. Stand up to stretch if you’ve been sitting down for too long. Take a short walk during your break, and always try to take the stairs instead of the elevator. These small life choices can have a big impact on your overall health.
Consider Buying a Standing Desk
You might even want to consider buying a standing desk. If you’re worried about sitting for long periods of time, then buying a standing desk is going to allow you to do your job while standing. It might feel tough to transition to this desk style at first, but it’s going to be much better for your health. There are also desks that can convert from standing to sitting so that you can stand for part of your workday.
Avoid Eye Strain
Do your eyes hurt from looking at a computer screen too much? You might want to consider changing the position of your monitor so that it isn’t so close to your eyes. Conversely, you could also consider getting glasses that have better lenses that help to reduce eye problems from looking at screens. You don’t want to have to experience headaches all the time, so try to make some adjustments when you can.
