England batter Dawid Malan announces retirement from international cricket
Dawid Malan, the former top-ranked T20 batter who scored centuries for England in all formats, has announced his retirement from the international arena. The 36-year-old Malan told British newspaper The Times of London that he exceeded expectations with his success in the white-ball game but was disappointed that he couldn’t handle the intensity of test cricket. Malan, a top-order batter, played…

Curious squad announcements
England squad for ODI series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.
I mean, it’s incredibly similar to the squad of four years ago that won and won dramatically, which is mainly good. I mean, they absolutely won on a wing and a prayer, but the same team will have the same wings and prayers, so. I’m curious if S Curran will be in the starting XI. Probably - hopefully - and it seems to me that he’s the one projected to take on the Ben Stokes, batting-six-and-there-at-the-end role, and he doesn’t seem ready for that now so I guess the inclusion of Stokes is good. Just, you know, it’s better if everyone arrives in India with the Captain able to move.
I’m a bit surprised by the inclusion of Jason Roy. He hasn’t done much for a while. I guess I’m pleased in the sense that I like loyalty to players, but I was expecting Jacks, Crawley and Foakes and they have all contributed more to recent matches (although admittedly in different formats). But I’m also pleased because I have loyalty to players and if J-Roy can find some form with Jonny, England will stand in incredible stead.
Leaving out Harry Brook though.
Chuffed for David Willey.
England squad for T20 series against New Zealand: Jos Buttler (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue, John Turner, Luke Wood.
Yay, Will Jacks! I think he might be the crucial test player of the future so it’s nice to see him beginning to be included. Also great to see more Rehan Ahmed.
I wondered about Crawley, but the red ball and white ball teams seem to be pulling away from each other to some degree, so I’m not that surprised.
No Dan Lawrence in either format, which is a shame.
I don’t recall Gus Atkinson when Surrey have played Middlesex but I guess he must be something. Surrey are certainly an extremely strong side - the white ball team isn’t a million miles from a Surrey 1st XI. Which brings me to…
Seriously. Has Foakes set fire to a pavilion? Murdered a groundskeeper? Chained himself to The Oval and refused to leave?

IPL Auction 2025: 7 Players Mumbai Indians Can Buy with Their Remaining Budget
The IPL Auction 2025 is around the corner. And as in each season, big moves with Mumbai Indians can be expected to strengthen their team. Well, with a good core of retained Indian players, including Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians will have an excellent national backbone, which forms the core strength. Though their primary emphasis will be on quality foreign players, particularly fast bowlers, as Wankhede Stadium is an outright fast-tracking surface. Here are 7 players MI could target to strengthen their squad within their available budget:
Josh Hazlewood (Australia) - Fast Bowler Josh Hazlewood’s precise line and length make him a potent threat in any condition. MI’s interest in him would be particularly strong given the flat pitches at Wankhede Stadium, which can benefit fast bowlers who can generate swing. Hazlewood’s ability to bowl under pressure in the death overs and his experience in T20 leagues around the world make him an ideal candidate for MI's bowling attack.
Dawid Malan, England Top-order batsman Dawid Malan, the top-order batsman of England, would be one excellent pick for MI. Consistency is one of his key strengths, and with Malan, an innings is anchored to a better extent. Malan comes across as versatile, considering he can play against both pace and spin. He has enormous experience in T20 cricket in leagues like Big Bash League and The Hundred, so that automatically adds value to the batting line-up for MI.
Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand) – Fast Bowler In the past, MI has often backed strong pace bowlers, and Lockie Ferguson is no exception. He's been renowned for his raw pace and can be a massive destroyer of batsmen in the death overs. His express speed coupled with his ability to bowl yorkers even when in pressure situations makes him an expensive asset in T20 cricket. Against Wankhede, where swift bowling can cause serious problems for batsmen, Ferguson might find solace along with Bumrah and Pandya.
Adam Zampa - Leg Spinner 4. Australia Adam Zampa, of course, is a proven wicket-taker, one who is a specialist in the middle overs. With Wankhede sometimes allowing spinners to gain a seam that helps them win the game, Mumbai might just need Zampa to provide the right arm of control and variation. Experience in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore and his attendant performances in other T20 leagues make him a high-profile target for MI looking to strengthen their spin arsenal.
Shimron Hetmyer (West Indies) – Middle-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer is an aggressive middleorder bat, but a hitter nevertheless. He has the ability to fire in the latter half of the innings, which is a great asset for MI to have as a finisher. With the aim of a power-hitting depth in the squad, Hetmyer's experience in T20 cricket and the time he has spent in IPL would add to his value for the team. His aggressive stroke play could complement MI's strong top-order batsmen such as Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma.
Kyle Jamieson (New Zealand) - All-rounder Kyle Jamieson is well balanced between his pace and batting depth. He can bowl consistently at a speed of 140 km/h plus and chip in with the bat towards the end, making him a valuable asset to MI across both departments. He will complement Hardik Pandya as an all-rounder and provide some extra heft with their bowling attack on flat Wankhede pitches.
Rilee Rossouw (South Africa) – Top-order Batsman The game may turn out to be a game-changer for MI if Rilee Rossouw manages to form partnerships at the top of the order with aggressive strokes. With his experience playing T20 leagues around the world, Rossouw has a reputation for coming under pressure and accelerating games as needed. Rossouw might be the injection MI will need to give depth in the middle overs and allow players like Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma to come out and play freely at the top.
Conclusion With IPL Auction 2025 around the corner, Mumbai Indians will do some shrewd maneuvering to add strength to their squad, especially in the foreign player department. Fast bowlers are going to be some of the major targets for MI, especially going by the nature of Wankhede Stadium's pitch. Josh Hazlewood, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Zampa will bring fire in their bowling attack while Dawid Malan, Shimron Hetmyer, and Rilee Rossouw will provide the batting lineup depth and versatility. If MI can get these players within the remaining budget, they will have a strong, well-balanced squad to challenge for the title in IPL 2025.
Keep watching CMITimes for more updates on the IPL Auction 2025 and Mumbai Indians' strategies!

Malan backs McCullum to revive England’s white-ball fortunes
England coach Brendon McCullum must find the right balance between youth and experience if he is to revive the country’s white-ball fortunes, former player Dawid Malan has said. England won the Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the world T20 title in 2022, but things have not gone smoothly in either limited-overs format since. They failed to get past the pool stage at the 2023 ODI World Cup and…

[ad_1] Ben Stokes is no stranger to the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, having hit his maiden Indian Premier League century at the same venue in 2017. Despite having had a quiet tournament so far, Stokes finally came to the party to set up England’s win over Netherlands in its penultimate Men’s World Cup fixture.ENG VS NED, WORLD CUP 2023: FULL HIGHLIGHTSStokes’ strokeful century and his 129-run partnership with Chris Woakes for the seventh wicket ensured Dawid Malan’s good work at the top didn’t go in vain. Once England ran away with it in the last 10 overs to pile on 339 for nine, its highest tally of the tournament, Netherlands crumbled in the chase. The 160-run win - only the second win for the defending champion - meant England remained in the race to finish in the top eight and qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.Had it not been for Stokes and Woakes’ pyrotechnics, England may have been staring down the barrel in the European Derby. Stokes took guard in the 21st over after Joe Root’s attempted reverse-nothing shot resulted in the ball squeezing between his pads and crashing into the stumps. At 133 for two, and Malan racing towards his second century, England was in control. But Malan was involved in a needless run out soon after and Netherlands choked the run-flow to put an underwhelming England middle-order in distress. Netherlands picked five for 59 in the 15-over passage to leave England reeling at 192 for six in the 36th over.ENG VS NED, WORLD CUP 2023: FULL SCORECARDStokes held one end together and found an ally in Woakes. Even when Woakes was playing freely, Stokes preferred to be restrained. Only in the 43rd over did the left-hander open his shoulders up to dispatch Bas de Leede over the midwicket fence to raise his fifty. That over opened the floodgates as England added a whopping 110 runs in the last eight overs. Off-spinner Aryan Dutt - who was the pick of the Dutch bowlers yet again with figures of 9-0-43-2 - was taken to the cleaners in his last over.On either side of a contentious leg-before DRS review going in Stokes’ favour, the left-hander tonked three sixes and a four off Dutt in the 45th over that went for 24 runs. He brought up his hundred by reverse-sweeping pacer Paul van Meekeren in the 48th over.Woakes went after de Leede in the next over to bring up his fifty and take the target well out of Netherlands’ reach. The England bowling unit ensured the batting group’s effort did not go waste as it picked wickets at regular intervals to wind up the Dutch innings in the 38th over.
