With Epler talking about the davrin vs Harding choice and saying "we threw in assan to make the choice harder" fully ignoring how horrible the concept of a disposable black man would be/the fans believing davrin is the correct sacrifice choice because "he was already ready to die" I feel the need to remind everyone of why Davrin dying is actually gut punching just as much as Harding.
Davrin's whole arc revolves around the idea that his death is the only time he'd truly matter. Grey Wardens idolize the noble sacrifice and eagerly await the chance to throw themselves away to be remembered in glory, to have their blood mean something. And when Davrin doesn't die like he thought he would, it means he now is forced to find a purpose. A reason to live and something he can look forward to. Something he does succeed in through the completion of the griffin quest.
Asian isn't the only one here with hope for the future and a path ahead, Davrin finally for the first time in years sees himself as something other than a sword used to cut down an enemy and toss away once the fight finishes. Foe other people the choice might have been simple, but to me I was faced with two people who both had something waiting for them.
I couldn't choose Davrin, I knew someone would probably die and I couldn't bring myself to let it be him. I didn't even know the ending would be assan dying to because for me the focus was Davrin. And even still choosing Harding was heartbreaking.
I think if by the end of the game you only view Davrin as an inconsequential sacrifice who was only ever meant to die, you've fully missed the point of his story.
