RSVP Deadline tonight: Overcoming Writing Blocks and Procrastination

Event Date: Saturday, July 21, 2018 || Speaker: David Rasch  || Check-in: 12:30 pm ||

This presentation will address several common problems writers experience with trying to maintain a regular writing practice. Topics will include time management, procrastination, writing blocks, anxiety, self-esteem, dealing with criticism and rejection, and finding useful support. There will be a discussion of how to identify and shift habits that do not serve one’s writing. Participants are encouraged to bring pen and paper or a laptop to do a couple of short exercises during the talk.

David Rasch is a psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with writers who struggle with blocks, procrastination, and related problems. He has worked as a therapist, workshop leader, writing consultant, Director at Stanford University’s Faculty Staff Counseling Center, and Stanford University Ombuds. For several years he has also been a lecturer on writing productivity in Stanford University’s Continuing Education Program. Dr Rasch lives in Ojai, California and has a practice teaching and consulting to assist writers of all genres and levels of skill with initiating and sustaining a consistent practice of writing.

Here’s a show I miss and wish they’d bring back in some form. Long before Brooklyn Nine Nine - but well after Police Squad - Sledge Hammer! poked fun at ultra-violent cop TV shows and movies. Basically think Dirty Harry mashed up with Get Smart (with a good dollop of Police Squad), add in the lead character’s habit of talking to his gun, and that was Sledge Hammer. The show lasted only two seasons and in fact they were so sure they were going to be one-and-done they did something in the last episode that forced some pretty creative writing for the second season. (Bullet wounds may heal, but nuclear explosions are a bit harder to shake off, even on TV.)

I’m sure this thing is on a Netflix somewhere. I highly recommend it.

By the way, Canadian actress Anne-Marie Martin, who played Sledge’s partner, Dorie Doreau, was married to Michael Crichton. She retired from acting sometime after Sledge Hammer and co-wrote the screenplay for the early 90s hit film Twister with Crichton. Before Sledge Hammer, she was credited as Eddie Benton (her birth name - Eddie being Edmonda) and was known for appearing in films such as the classic 1980 Canadian slasher horror movie Prom Night and the Buck Rogers/Battlestar Galactica rip-off The Shape of Things to Come (she also appeared in the actual Buck Rogers TV series, too).

As for star David Rasche, this was a totally out of character role for him as he was better known for dramatic roles (such as that of a nuclear terrorist in the news broadcast simulation Special Bulletin). Years later, he appeared with Peter Capaldi in the Thick of It spin-off film, In the Loop. I kept hoping his character would utter Sledge Hammer’s (usually inaccurate) catchphrase: “Trust me, I know what I’m doing!”

Além de Sebastian Maniscalco e Robert De Niro, o elenco ainda conta com Kim Cattrall, Leslie Bibb, Anders Holm, David Rasche, Brett Dier e Deborah Tucker. A direção fica nas mãos de Laura Terruso e tem roteiro assinado por Austen Earl e Sebastian Maniscalco.
