Persuasion Fatigue: Just in Time to Save the Holidays
Holiday time is political-religious-sports argument time. Mix in alcohol, the Airing of Grievances, and Feats of Strength and you've got a mixture that could easily end Festivus at the emergency room, with gun fire, or the police. Here's how to avoid it.
Coping with your MAGA Relatives during the Festivus Season Festivus is nearly upon us and Ye Olde Blogge is back up and running just barely in time to help us through the festivities, especially the Airing of Grievances and Feats of Strength. 2022 being an election year makes the Airing of Grievances particularly dicey and no one wants the drunken adult wrestling matches to be fueled by…

Night Light Denver Project Side by Snow Yunxue Fu - Documentations from Snow Yunxue Fu on Vimeo.
Showcase: Night Light Denver Curator: David Moke Date: Month of May, 2022
Side is an experimental 3D moving artwork focusing on the notion: we have a long-term dilemma for we have a short-term body. Working primarily with 3D software in a post-photographic framework, Fu creates scenes of experimental abstraction that translate the concept of liminality into the digital experience.

Portugal: 2018-19 UEFA Nations League Winners
At a glance Portugal have added the UEFA Nations League crown to their UEFA EURO 2016 triumph after Gonçalo Guedes's second-half strike downed the Netherlands.
Defences held sway in an even first 59 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo, Memphis Depay and Bernardo Silva all carried menace, but as soon as they encountered their opponents' defensive walls, impenetrable fortifications marshalled by Virgil van Dijk and José Fonte, they floundered.
Then, on the hour, came the breakthrough. Bernardo Silva looked to have overcooked his disguised pass to Guedes, but the Valencia forward wrapped his foot around it and squeezed a shot inside the post. Despite getting two hands to the ball, Jasper Cillessen could not keep it out.
The Oranje have become used to falling behind and responded gamely, with Depay going close from a header. The Portuguese rearguard held firm, however, with the sight of Ronaldo clearing from open play an indication that it was all hands to the pump. Portugal have done it again.
Man of the match: Rúben Dias "An assured performance from the young central defender," said UEFA Technical Observer David Moyes. "He played with a lot of confidence and took a lot of responsibility with the absence of Pepe through injury."
View from the stadium Joe Walker, Portugal Portugal have gone some way to banishing the demons of 2004 by claiming UEFA Nations League glory on home turf to add to their UEFA EURO 2016 title. On the balance of play, you have to say they were good value for it. Fernando Santos got his selection spot-on, Guedes repaying the faith with a fine winner and Danilo a colossus in midfield.
Derek Brookman, Netherlands We didn't get to see the dynamic, bold Dutch we've become accustomed to. Frenkie de Jong never got the chance to dictate the rhythm of the game, Georginio Wijnaldum looked a little off the pace, and the gaps between the lines were too great. Maybe the long season finally caught up with the players. The team, nonetheless, can be immensely proud of their progress.
Key stats 1: Portugal are the inaugural UEFA Nations League winners!
4: Gonçalo Guedes's goal was his fourth in 17 appearances for Portugal, and his first competitive international strike.
10: Portugal are unbeaten in their last ten matches (W5 D5).
14: Portugal are 14 competitive games unbeaten on home turf, dating back to September 2014.
50: Jasper Cillessen became only the fifth goalkeeper to earn 50 caps for the Netherlands.
What's next? A summer of celebrations for Portugal! Eventually, attention will then switch back to UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying this autumn. Portugal resume their title defence away to Serbia on 7 September. The Netherlands face Germany yet again on 6 September – it was, of course, a 3-0 victory against their great neighbours that set the Oranje on the road to the UEFA Nations League final.

(CANBERRA, Australia) — Thousands gathered in Australia’s capital on Friday to remind Australians that the racial inequality underscored by George Floyd’s death was not unique to the United States.
The Canberra rally that attracted 2,000 demonstrators comes before larger rallies are planned for Australia’s most populous cities on Saturday, with authorities concerned about maintaining social distancing.
“Australians have to understand that what’s been going on the United States has been happening here for a long time,” said Matilda House, an elder of the Ngambri-Ngunnawal family group who are the traditional owners of the Canberra region.
Australia had to move beyond a colonial attitude “that blacks are only here to be walked on, trodden on and murdered,” House said in the first speech of the rally.
A demonstrator who interrupted House, arguing that the rally’s focus should be on “what’s happening in the United States” rather than Australia’s colonial history, was shouted down in a heated confrontation with several protesters. The demonstrator eventually followed the crowd’s advice to leave.
The crowd was majority-white in a majority-white city. Organizers handed out masks and hand sanitizer. Most protesters attempted to keep the recommended 1.5 meters (5 feet) social distancing until the speeches began and people drew closer. Public gatherings are limited to 20 in Canberra, but police did not intervene.
One of the protesters, Wendy Brookman, a teacher and member of the Butchulla indigenous people, said Australia should not accept more than 430 indigenous Australians dying in police custody or prison in the past three decades.
“We’re not here to jump on the bandwagon of what’s happened in the United States,” Brookman said. “We’re here to voice what’s happening to our indigenous people.”
One of the protesters’ signs “I can’t breathe,” drew a parallel between Floyd’s death in Minnesota on May 25 and the Australian indigenous experience.
They were among the last words of both Floyd and Aboriginal man David Dungay, who died in a prison hospital in 2015 while being restrained by five guards.
Nigerian-born Oluwatobi Odusote, 16, and her school friends Jan Usha, 17, and Rhyse Morgan, 16, held a red, black and yellow indigenous flag during the protest.
“I thought that if America is taking a stand to save black lives, then we should help save the Aboriginal l lives here in Australia, too,” Odusote said.
Usha, who is of Nigerian and Asian background, described the rally as “great” because Australia rarely addresses racism through protest.
Morgan, who is of European heritage, said “if we’re all not equal, then no one benefits.”
Indigenous Australians are 2% of the Australian adult population but 27% of the prison population.
Australia’s indigenous people are the most disadvantaged ethnic minority in Australia. They have higher-than-average rates of infant mortality and poor health, as well as shorter life expectancy and lower levels of education and employment than other Australians.

Just some thoughts on the house of lords.
Imagine this for a gig. You get paid £50,000 for doing no discernible work, occasionally get to wear some funky-looking scarlet and ermine robes, prance around one of the world’s most iconic buildings, and even have subsidised meals thrown into the bargain. This is lifestyle that David Brookman, a Labour peer in the House of Lords, might recognise, according to a Guardian investigation. You, as a taxpayer, forked out the equivalent of two nurses’ salary last year in attendance and travel expenses for Baron Brookman of Ebbw Vale, who in a 12-month period didn’t participate in a single debate or submit any written questions. Still, who needs nurses?
One in nine peers, in a full year between 2017 and 2018, did not participate in any House of Lords business (defined as speaking in a debate, holding a government post or participating in a committee), and 46 didn’t even vote: yet one of these still claimed a cool £25,000. (Lord Brookman did at least vote regularly.)
You don’t have to be possessed by the ghost of Madame Guillotine to consider this a little provocative, not least in a society where the state has imposed a real terms pay cut on public sector workers who work extremely hard and save lives, all justified because there apparently isn’t enough money in the exchequer. If your blood pressure hasn’t yet risen sufficiently, these revelations come at the same time ex-Telegraph owner Conrad Black has declared he plans to return to the House of Lords after receiving a presidential pardon from his friend Donald Trump – just after publishing a book praising him.
Some will doubtless say: ah but the House of Lords provides an invaluable function, the executive already has too much power as it is, you don’t want to live in a de facto dictatorship, do you? But here is an institution beyond reform. It has been stuffed full of lobbyists, party donors, ex-party staffers and well-connected businesspeople. Even if you believe in granting unelected figures political power, the Lords is not brimming with specialists and experts who would never have found their way on to the green benches of the House of Commons: it’s riddled with nepotism. The Lords even has bishops with full voting rights, making Britain the only country other than Iran to automatically reserve places in its legislature for unelected religious figures.
But in any case, its very existence is an affront to democracy, offering no good answers to the five questions set by the late Tony Benn that should be put to those in positions of power: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you use it? To whom are you accountable? How do we get rid of you?”
The obvious alternative, of course, is to simply replace it with an elected chamber. But this is fraught with problems: it is extremely unlikely, to say the least, that such a chamber would be elected with the same electoral system, and would instead almost certainly have a proportional electoral system. Unless our voting system in the Commons was simultaneously reformed, a clash could emerge between the two chambers over which is more legitimate.
Instead, we should look to countries such as New Zealand, Norway or Finland, which have unicameral systems: that is, only one legislative chamber. No one can seriously impugn their democratic credentials. But to avoid concentrating power in the executives, we should simply boost checks and balances within parliament: give select committees and backbenches more power, for example. There is a strong argument that such a reform could be accompanied with a wider constitutional upheaval encompassing electoral reform but also, say, creating a federal Britain.
It’s certainly a debate to be had. But there can be no question that the House of Lords is a broken, morally corrupt, anti-democratic institution,. Instead of tinkering with it, we should do what no government has had the courage to do, and simply dispose of it.

Facebook Expects to Be Fined Up to $5 Billion by F.T.C. Over Privacy Issues
Regulatory investigators have found that Facebook’s handling of data has harmed millions of consumers through privacy breaches. If you were determining penalties, would you: (1) fine Facebook $5 billion fine, the largest fine ever but still an amount that is just a fraction of its $56 billion in annual revenue, or (2) in addition to $5 billion fine also require far reaching reforms in management, privacy practices and culture? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Facebook said on Wednesday that it expected to be fined up to $5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission for privacy violations. The penalty would be a record by the agency against a technology company and a sign that the United States was willing to punish big tech companies.
The social network disclosed the amount in its quarterly financial results, saying it estimated a one-time charge of $3 billion to $5 billion in connection with an “ongoing inquiry” by the F.T.C. Facebook added that “the matter remains unresolved, and there can be no assurance as to the timing or the terms of any final outcome.”
Facebook has been in negotiations with the regulator for months over a financial penalty for claims that the company violated a 2011 privacy consent decree. That year, the social network promised a series of measures to protect its users’ privacy after an investigation found that its handling of data had harmed consumers.
The F.T.C. opened a new investigation last year after Facebook came under fire again. This time, the company was accused of not protecting its users’ data from being harvested without their consent by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm that was building voter profiles for the Trump campaign. Facebook also suffered a data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly 50 million users.
Levying a sizable fine on Facebook would go against the reputation of the United States of not restraining the power of big tech companies. For years, American regulators have faced criticism that they allowed Silicon Valley firms to grow unchecked, even as their European counterparts aggressively brought actions against tech companies — including fining Google a record $5.1 billion last year for abusing its power in the mobile phone market.
For the Trump administration, penalizing Facebook would be a defining action. Although President Trump has rolled back scores of business regulations, he and others in Washington — including Democrats — have coalesced around calling for greater scrutiny and enforcement of tech companies. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts and presidential candidate, has called for the breakup of Amazon, Google and Facebook. And Mr. Trump has sounded alarms over the dominance of the firms and their control over speech and the distribution of information.
It would also be a milestone for the F.T.C., whose biggest fine for a tech company was $22 million against Google in 2012 for misrepresenting how it used some online tracking tools. The agency, which is charged with overseeing deceptive and unfair business practices, is riding a wave of anti-tech sentiment as questions about how tech companies have contributed to misinformation, election meddling and data privacy problems have stacked up.
“The F.T.C. is really limited in what they can actually do in enforcing a consent decree, but in the case of Facebook, they had public pressure on their side,” said Justin Brookman, a former official for the regulator who is now a director of privacy at Consumers Union, nonprofit consumer advocacy group.
But some lawmakers said a fine would not suffice in punishing Facebook. Representative David Cicilline, Democrat of Rhode Island, said that “a fine in the low billions of dollars would amount to a slap on the wrist for Facebook” and that Congress needed to act.
“Facebook must be held accountable — not just by fines — but also far reaching reforms in management, privacy practices and culture,” Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, added in a tweet.
The F.T.C. declined to comment.
Officials at the agency have not reached a final decision on Facebook, said two people with knowledge of the situation, who were not authorized to speak publicly. In recent weeks, the agency’s chairman, Joseph Simons, sent strict orders to all commission offices and staff in the consumer protection, enforcement and privacy bureaus to not discuss the Facebook case, two people said.
But Facebook’s estimate of a fine signaled that a settlement with the F.T.C. was near. The Securities and Exchange Commission typically requires that a company notify investors of any significant financial hits.
For Facebook, a $5 billion fine would amount to a fraction of its $56 billion in annual revenue. Any resolution would also alleviate some of the regulatory pressure that has been intensifying against the company over the past two and a half years.
“This would be a joke of a fine — a two-weeks-of-revenue, parking-ticket-level penalty for destroying democracy,” said Matt Stoller, a fellow at the Open Markets Institute, a think tank that is a vocal critic of the power of tech companies.
More meaningful to Facebook would be any regulatory mandates that curbed its ability to share data with business partners or required it to take more measures to inform consumers when and how it collected data.
“Those will have the most lasting impact on consumers’ privacy,” said Ashkan Soltani, a former chief technology officer for the trade commission.
Even as the negotiations continue, Facebook’s business remains robust. The company said Wednesday that its revenue increased 26 percent in the first quarter to $15 billion from a year earlier. Net income dropped 51 percent from a year ago to $2.4 billion because of the expected one-time charge related to the F.T.C. investigation. The company has more than $40 billion in cash reserves.
New users continue flocking to Facebook. More than 2.7 billion people use one of the company’s so-called family of apps — Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp — each month. The company said about 1.56 billion people use Facebook every day, up 8 percent from a year ago.
Last month, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and chief executive, said he planned to start shifting people toward private conversations and away from public broadcasting on social media, which is likely to help the company manage issues of toxic content and misinformation. On Wednesday in a conference call, Mr. Zuckerberg repeated that vision.
“People want a platform that is as strong on privacy as possible,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. He added that “we just don’t know” how the change would affect the company’s business.
Mr. Zuckerberg also said he welcomed regulations, an idea that he has increasingly been vocal about this year.
“I think it’s necessary,” he said. “Getting these issues right is more important than our interests. And I believe that regulation will help establish trust when people know that the right systems of governance and accountability are in place.”
