At one point, Mark asked if he needed an attorney. –Case File Notes of Detective James “Flash” Pruett, dated January 4, 1996.

During his six-hour initial interview with Mark Turner, Detective James “Flash” Pruett was able to establish several facts: First, Rhonda left her gray-hooded sweatjacket in Turner’s Buick when the two traveled to Hickory’s Valley Hills Mall to shop for a Christmas gift for Jill Turner-Mull. Secondly, Mark said as much and stated that Jill spotted the jacket and inquired about its presence in the backseat. Moreover, Flash also knew that the jacket was later found on the sundeck of Rhonda’s 210 Datsun when the car’s contents were inventoried on the afternoon of Dec. 23, 1981, several hours after her early morning shooting death.

Attention turned toward Mark’s recollections of his activities on the evening of Dec. 22– prior to the killing of Rhonda Hinson—especially his date with Ms. Turner-Mull. Detective Pruett summarized his findings:

“He [Mark] does not recall picking Jill up, but does recall taking her home and letting her out near a street light. He was afraid to pull down into the drive because of ice. He recalled going back home on I-40. He cannot remember the exact time and can’t remember what he and Jill did that night. He does not recall seeing anyone parked near the crime scene on his way home. Regretfully, he cannot remember how the gray sweatjacket got out of his Buick. He has no memory of what he did with it or how it got out of his car.”

Then, Flash showed Mark a photo of a brown bowl that was also found in the Datsun 210 on the floorboard behind the driver’s seat. The detective recorded Turner’s immediate response to the picture:

‘That’s my mother’s bowl.’ [Mark] recalls his mother having a bowl like it, but can’t recall who had it. If it was his mother’s bowl, he has no idea how it got in Rhonda’s car....He thinks his mother has sent food home with Greg before, but just can’t remember the timeframe.”

When asked, Mark Turner maintained that he was not familiar with the other contents in Rhonda’s automobile. He averred that he did not have possession of Rhonda’s East Burke letter jacket, although he did accede to the possibility of seeing the paperback novel found in the backseat—as before, he could not recollect the timeframe.

Next, Detective Pruett queried Mark about the early morning hours subsequent to the killing of Rhonda Hinson. Flash summarized the remarks of his interviewee:

“Greg [McDowell] did not call Mark and tell him about Rhonda being killed. Jill Turner called him and they both went to Greg’s house around 7:00 AM on December 23, 1981. Mark feels like a television was on in Greg’s room and Greg was on the bed. Greg didn’t talk much and they left. Mark and Jill were in the car leaving when Greg ran out of his home. He waved them down; Mark stopped and Greg went to his car (Mark can’t remember which one) and Greg brought a pack of condoms to Mark’s car saying, “I don’t want them (either his parents or Rhonda’s parents) to find out we were having sex.’ Mark felt this act was very odd behavior for Greg, especially with Greg acting like he didn’t even want to talk to them only minutes earlier. The package was unopened and Mark thinks he threw them away later.”

As the interview concluded, Mr. Turner indicated that he was willing to take a polygraph or other tests which could assist his memory. He promised the investigator that he would “try to find a way to remember the events which occurred on December 22, 1981”—the evening during which he and Jill Turner-Mull dated. He told Flash that he was planning a skiing trip to Snowshoe, W. Va., for the weekend upcoming but would contact him when he returned to Valdese.

“I have not heard from Mark Turner,” Detective Pruett noted six-days after his initial interview with him—Wednesday January 10, 1996. “I expected him to call or maybe leave a message to call him.”

Flash called Frye Regional Hospital and talked with a woman named, Glynis, in Medical Records. He asked if she would check her computer for the date Mark Turner visited the emergency room during December 1981. Glynis told the detective that she would have to manually search for the record because her computer records would not retrieve data from that timeframe.

Once she had successfully retrieved the requested data, Glynis apprised the detective that Turner had visited the emergency room on Monday, December 21, 1981. Flash asked if she would make copies of the record, informing her that he would have a signed medical release form from Turner, in his possession, granting permission for accessibility. The detective was particularly interested in the types of medication prescribed for the then 18-year-old by the attending emergency physician and their potential deleterious effects upon his memory.

Pruett the called Jill Turner-Mull to ask if she recalled what day Mark hurt his back. When questioned, Turner indicated that he hurt his back while engaged in purported salacious activity. The detective summarized:

Additionally, Judy Hinson recalls that she and her daughter went shopping for clothes on Saturday December 19th; so, Mark and Rhonda’s shopping trip likely occurred on Friday, December 18th. Four individuals confirmed the occurrence of their shopping excursion—Rhonda, Judy Hinson, Jill Turner-Mull, and Mark Turner.]

Clearly, Detective Pruett was researching the possibility of the utilization of hypnosis to facilitate both the memories of Mark Turner and his former girlfriend, Jill Turner-Mull. Of this endeavor, Flash wrote:

“I called Dr. Stan Reziss, PhD (pronounced rises) in Charlotte…He returned my call later today. I am told he is the best in the state in the hypnosis field. He taught instructors at the NC Justice Academy. He had testified in court and is considered as an expert in his field. Dr. Reziss said he could attempt to have both Jill and Mark recall the December, 1981 events in question. The fact Mark was on medication may be a problem according to Dr. Reziss. He may not have memory to recall….”

Before going to find Mark at his Foothills Footwear business, Flash placed several calls to Turner’s mother—Barbara Good Turner; however, each time he was only successful at reaching the answering machine. It would be another eight days—January 18, 1996—before he would interview Mark’s mother.

As the day progressed, Flash attempted telephonic contact with Turner several times—the secretary repeatedly averred he was not there. Finally, the detective placed one final call; this time Mark answered the phone. The two men met outside in the parking lot and talk for about 30 minutes in Detective Pruett’s automobile. He recorded their meeting in his case notes:

“He had not recalled any of his old memories. He was still unable to tell what he did with the gray sweatjacket. I informed him of the date he was at Frye Regional, but it did not refresh his memory of the event. He does recall taking three different medications. I asked him to sign a medical release form. He authorized me getting the records and signed the form.”

Pruett continued, “I asked if he would consider inviting Greg and his family to Mark’s home for some type of get together. He said he would be willing. I did not discuss the reason for it other than I needed to record the conversation. He asked about my reasoning and the need for it, but I told him I couldn’t discuss the matter…”

“His wife [Faith] drove up with their two children. Mark didn’t want his oldest daughter to know what was going on, so I left before she saw inside my car. Mark said he would call me later.”

In September 1994, according to case file notes, Special Agent John Suttle and Lt. Lee Turner interviewed a psychic named M. B. Dykshoorn. They requested that he draw composite pictures of the individual he perceived to be the killer of Rhonda Hinson and of the suspect’s wife. Detective Pruett contacted a Sgt. Smith at the office, supplying the Identi-Kit numbers (HH57, CC07, AA11, DE26, LL09, NN15, DD8, GG8) from the taped interview with Dykshoorn. The detective wrote:

“When I arrived at Sgt. Smith’s office to look at his work product, I was amazed at the resemblance to Greg McDowell. I took the composite to Judy Hinson at work. She immediately said it was Greg McDowell. I went to Jeff Hinkle’s home in Valdese to show him, but he was out of town until later this week.”

Flash drove to Mark Turner’s house around 7 p.m, to meet with him. The two men conversed outside. When Mark told the detective that his daughter was at church, Flash suggested that they hold their conversation inside; so, the two stepped into the residence and repaired to the kitchen area. Faith was in the kitchen feeding “the small child.” Mr. Pruett summarized the exchange:

“I showed Mark the composites and I noticed Faith trying to see them. I asked if Mark wanted Faith to see the picture of the suspect’s wife. He did, so I went outside to get Book Number Two. I opened it to the female’s picture and then asked if Mark knew who the male composite was. He said it look just like Greg McDowell. I turned to Faith and asked her opinion. She said when I walked into the kitchen; she glanced at the two composites, but she immediately thought to herself it was Greg McDowell. When I asked her to look at the female, she immediately responded, ‘it looks just like me.’”

Visibly shaken, Faith left the room and returned with an East Burke High School yearbook and showed Detective Pruett her photo inside it—the similarity between the two renderings was noted. Ostensibly, Mark had previously discussed the female composite with his wife and had described the psychic’s perception relative to the suspect’s wife having bad teeth. Turner had earlier related to Flash that his wife had bad teeth.

Mr. Pruett asked Faith if she knew whether or not Greg’s wife, Jane McDowell, had teeth that were in “bad shape.” He wrote of her response:

“Faith was so shaken she didn’t even respond to the question. Mark answered saying, ‘I’ve already told him about your teeth.’ Faith again said the female photograph was her and she had very bad teeth. I could literally see the doubt she had in her mind about Mark. I feel she strongly suspected Mark of the crime, especially when I questioned her about Mark’s mother’s bowl and the presence of the gray sweatjacket in Mark’s car.

A Brief History of the Toyota Hilux – Everything You Need To Know

The Toyota Hilux pickup truck has become one of the most iconic vehicles to ever emerge from Japanese vehicle maker Toyota.

The Hilux, known as the Pickup or Pickup Truck in the US market, has the distinction of having been to both North and South Poles and while on a North Pole journey for Top Gear went to the top of Eyjafjallajökull, the “unpronounceable mountain” in Iceland.

The Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – An Introduction

The Hilux has competed in such motorsport events as the Dakar Rally with a significant measure of success. Not only that but the Hilux proved to be so ruggedly dependable that it even had a war named after it; the Chadian-Libyan war of 1987 became colloquially known as the “Toyota War” because the Hilux became the transport of choice for combatants of both sides. In fact the Toyota Hilux has even been referred to as the vehicle equivalent of Mikhail Kalashnikov‘s AK47 military rifle.

Those things have been helpful in building the Hilux’s public image as a reliable and near indestructible vehicle: but the real strength of the Hilux, the thing that has made it a best seller for decades, has been its reputation for excellence in quality control and dependability with owners. When someone is going to go and buy a truck for work or play they are not likely to put much stock in what the advertising says, nor in what a salesman says.

The thing that decides a potential buyer of a Hilux is what ordinary owners have to say about it: it has been those word of mouth recommendations that have ensured the Toyota Hilux has held its ground as a best selling utility vehicle over five decades of production.

The Toyota Hilux came from humble beginnings as an inconspicuous little utility truck not made by Toyota at all. It began life as a small truck made by Japanese vehicle maker Hino, and it was originally called the Hino Briska.

Back in the 1960’s Hino were making both commercial vehicles and passenger cars based on the French Renault 4CV. The Hino passenger car was the Hino Contessa and it featured the same rear engine and rear wheel drive layout of its Renault 4CV parent, while the Hino Briska pick-up truck used some of the same components but laid out in a conventional front engine rear wheel drive arrangement.

During the 1960’s Toyota and Hino entered into discussions with a view to working together on the Briska light truck. Toyota made some suggestions as to ways the Briska could be improved and by 1967 the two companies had made an agreement for Hino to manufacture the Briska as the Toyota Briska.

This version of the Briska was the Hino FH series that was given the Toyota model code GY10. The newly minted “Toyota” Briska arrived in Toyota dealerships in early 1968 and it boasted twin headlights and a 1,251 cc in-line four cylinder engine delivering 62 bhp, which was slightly uprated from the original Hino specification. It would not be sold for long however as it was to be replaced by the first of the Toyota Hilux models.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – First Generation (1968-1972)

The first generation of the Toyota Hilux entered production in March 1968 and was an improved version of the Briska, engineered and manufactured by Hino. The model designation was the RN10 and the new Hilux boasted a 2R 1.5 liter (1,490 cc) in-line four cylinder engine producing 76 hp. That engine was mated to a four speed manual gearbox which used a column mounted gear lever. Back in the 1960’s the column mounted gear shift was very common and in a commercial or utility vehicle it made perfect sense as it allowed the use of a front bench seat that could accommodate three people.

The suspension of the Hilux was kept conventional with a design that would be familiar to the sort of customers Toyota was aiming the vehicle at. These customers would expect to be able to maintain and repair their vehicle themselves so the front suspension was a double “A” arms arrangement using coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers, while at the rear was a live axle using tried and proven leaf springs.

In April of 1969 a long wheelbase Hilux with a 7.4′ (2.25 meter) load bed was added to the short wheelbase model line-up for international markets, but not for North America, and then in February 1971 the engine was increased in capacity to the 12R 1.6 liter (1,587 cc) delivering 89 hp @ 5,400 rpm (SAE).

North American market Hilux were treated to different engines than for global markets. For 1969 the North American Toyota Hilux was fitted with a 3R 1.9 liter (1,897 cc) in-line four cylinder producing 84 hp. This was changed in 1970 to a SOHC in-line four cylinder producing a quite sporty 97 hp, and in 1972 the vehicle was fitted with an 18R 2.0 liter (1,968 cc) SOHC in-line four producing and even sportier 109 hp: not quite enough for a foray at the local drag strip but enough to give it sufficient grunt to manage the loads being heaped upon it.

One effect of the introduction of the Hilux was to enable Toyota to phase out their existing Crown and Corona based pickups/utilities. During this period Toyota reasoned that they wanted the names Crown and Corona associated with passenger cars, not commercial vehicles. In the 1960’s many manufacturers of affordable passenger cars made utility and panel van versions: by contrast makers of more up-market passenger cars did not. Toyota were strategically maneuvering to raise the prestige of their passenger car names.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Second Generation (1972-1978)

Despite being named “Hilux”, which was short for “High Luxury”, the Toyota Hilux did not actually live up to that name. It may have been a little bit more comfortable than a military Land Rover, but it was by no means luxurious. For the second generation of the Hilux Toyota decided to give the little utilitarian truck more comfort. The long wheelbase version was made available in the North American market with the introduction of this second generation series. The short wheelbase models were the RN20 and RN22, while the long wheelbase versions were the RN25 and RN27.

For the first series of these second generation Hilux the engines for international markets were the 12R 1.6 liter (1,587 cc) four cylinder engine producing 89 hp @ 5,400 rpm, or, from 1973, the 18R 2.0 liter (1,968 cc) four cylinder engine producing 105 hp @ 5,000 rpm with torque of 107 lb/ft @ 3,600 rpm. For North American markets the engines were the 18R 2.0 liter (1,968 cc) SOHC in-line four producing 109 hp from 1973, and the 20R 2.2 liter (2,189 cc) emissions controlled four cylinder producing 97 hp from 1975.

Available transmissions for the Hilux were expanded from the standard all synchromesh four speed manual to provide an optional 5 speed manual or three speed automatic. Not only were there more transmission options but buyers could opt for either column or floor shift gear-levers. The column shift fitted vehicles continued to be fitted with a front bench seat while the floor shift models featured individual front seats.

The second generation Hilux was not only made to go however but also to stop efficiently. It was not only fitted with servo assisted brakes but dual circuit brakes with load-sensing proportioning valves to make braking more efficient regardless of the load being carried.

The name “Hilux” was not used in all markets. In the United States the main competitor for the Toyota was the Datsun Truck which was well established in the market by the time the Hino made Toyota arrived. For this reason Toyota elected to change the name of the North American version of the Hilux to the Toyota Truck or Pickup Truck. Toyota began phasing out the “Hilux” name for North America in 1973 and completed the change in 1975.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Third Generation (1978-1983)

The third generation Hilux appeared in 1978 with model designations N30 and N40, at that time still only a front engine rear drive truck, but in 1979 that would change with the introduction of the four-wheel-drive version.

In the four-wheel-drive version the front independent suspension was replaced with a live axle and leaf springs, much like one might find on a Series Land Rover, but the Toyota Hilux had a little “Easter Egg” hiding under the floor in the form of a gear driven RF1A transfer case which could have additional transfer cases installed creating a dual or even triple transfer case arrangement with extremely low gearing. Thus fitted the Hilux could quite literally “climb every mountain” although the journey would be so slow that the driver could get out of the vehicle while it did some climbing all by itself.

The third generation Hilux introduced the “crew-cab” dual-cab option so the vehicle not only had a decent load space on the back but also became a quite comfortable five seater four door passenger car. This proved to be a popular body style, especially for rural customers, and nowadays if you are in a rural town in Australia for example you’ll get the impression that every man and his dog has a dual-cab Hilux.

Not only was the crew-cab/dual-cab provided but Toyota entered into a relationship with a number of US camper makers, including Winnebago Industries and Griffith, to make a fiberglass covered section for the rear of the vehicle, making it something like the Ford Bronco or Chevrolet Blazer. In the US these vehicles were marketed as the Trekker, Wolverine and Trailblazer and were the forerunners of the 4Runner and Hilux Surf models.

The conventional two-wheel-drive Hilux retained its fully independent front suspension and leaf spring live-axle rear end and saw some restyling, most notably the change from dual to single headlights. Engine choices for the two-wheel-drive Hilux in international markets were the 12R 1.6 liter (1,587 cc) four cylinder or the 18R 2.0 liter (1,968cc) engines as used in the second generation vehicles.

The four-wheel-drive Hilux were fitted with the larger 18R 2.0 liter (1,968cc) SOHC engine at minimum. Three other engines were progressively made available for the four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive models beginning with the 20R 2.2 liter (2,189 cc) SOHC four cylinder carried over from the second generation model.

In 1981 the 22R 2.4 liter (2,366 cc) SOHC four cylinder gasoline engine made its debut producing 97 hp @ 4,800 rpm with 129 lb/ft of torque @ 2,800 rpm. That same year the Hilux received its first diesel engine option, the 2.2 liter four cylinder producing 62 hp @ 4,200 rpm and 93 lb/ft of torque.

The standard gearbox remained the four speed all synchromesh manual with the five speed manual and three speed automatic being optional.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Fourth Generation (1983-1988)

The fourth generation Toyota Hilux was in a position where it was experiencing competition from its Nissan equivalent and so some improvements were made to the interior trim which included full height door trims and a steering wheel that matched the interior color of the vehicle.

A new body style, the Xtracab, was introduced which provided an extra six inches of storage space behind the front seat: a perfect and discreet place for fitting in such items as a rifle case or flat tool box. This was to be the Hilux that would co-star in the most memorable movie of the 1980’s, “Back to the Future”. Although the Delorean was the car that was turned into a “time machine with style”, the Xtracab Hilux was Marty McFly’s vehicle which he discovers he owns when he gets back from “good old 1955” to find his family’s future dramatically altered for the better.

The big improvements were hidden underneath the vehicle, especially the four-wheel-drive version which only kept its leaf-spring beam-axle front set up for the first year of production before being upgraded to the Hi-Trac independent front torsion-bar suspension. Engine options became more extensive; three diesel engines were offered, the 2.2 liter as used in the third generation models, the 2L 2.5 liter (2,446 cc) in-line four cylinder producing 83 hp @ 4,200 rpm with torque of 122 lb/ft @ 2,200 rpm, and a turbocharged version of that engine, the 2L-T producing 93 hp @ 4,000 rpm with torque of 159 lb/ft @ 2,400 rpm.

Gasoline/petrol engines included a Y 1.6 liter (1,626 cc) and 3Y 2.0 liter (1,998 cc) emissions controlled units at the small end of the scale, but there were much larger and more powerful engines made available. The 22R 2.4 liter SOHC continued over from the previous generation but three new more exciting engines were made available for power hungry Hilux owners.

The first of these new engines was the 22R-E, a fuel injected upgrade of the familiar 2.4 liter (2,366 cc) in-line four cylinder producing 105 hp at 4,800 rpm with 136 lb/ft of torque at 2,800 rpm. For those wanting a tad more excitement than that a turbocharged version was also provided which jacked the power up to 135 hp and torque to 173 lb/ft.

People are always wanting more however, and Nissan had decided to fit a V6 gasoline/petrol engine in their truck, and so Toyota decided to do the same. The new front independent suspension made it viable to install the 3VZ-E 3.0 liter (2,958 cc) V6 with the smooth delivery of 150 hp @ 4,800 rpm and torque of 180 lb/ft @ 2,400 rpm.

It was during production of the fourth generation Hilux that Toyota introduced the 4Runner model, which was also called the Hilux Surf in some markets. Although based on the Hilux the 4Runner body differed in having no window or wall between the rear of the front seats and the rear compartment, and in having rear seats under an enclosed removable fiberglass top.

The 4Runner was introduced in 1983 and made in a base version and an SR5 upgraded trim version with more comprehensive instrumentation and more upmarket interior trim.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Fifth Generation (1988-1997)

It was a 1988 model Hilux that was obtained by Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear team who had decided to give full vent to their passion for loud explosions and spectacular car crashes on that humble Toyota.

The Hilux they chose was a diesel which had been nicely run in having 305,775 km (190,000 miles) on the odometer. The Top Gear team were pretty determined that it would not accumulate many more miles on the clock before it arrived at a spectacular expiry date.

Jeremy Clarkson started out with some low level destructive antics such as driving the Hilux downstairs, something it was designed to do, and he then took it on a wild ride accidentally on purpose side-swiping a few buildings, which was the sort of thing that the Hilux could survive quite nicely thank you very much: that’s part of how it came to be called the AK47 of vehicles. Clarkson then crashed it into a tree, which also failed to stop it.

The next phase of the destruction derby was to see if it was able to survive a bit of nautical naughtiness. The poor inoffensive Hilux was tethered to a boat mooring at low tide so that when the tide came it in would be under a few tons of salty seawater.

The tethers failed to hold the Hilux to its mooring, which was not the Hilux’s fault, and so the tide sucked out its windscreen and it finished up half buried in sea and sand, something that children at the seaside quite enjoy but Toyota Hiluxes probably don’t.

Nonetheless the Hilux was hauled out of the briny and the sand cleaned off. The flooded engine surprised many when it was able to be started and the chirpy little Hilux was able to be driven away.

Frustrated with the Hilux’s durability Clarkson proceeded to drive the Hilux through the Top Gear office, which was a wooden shed, which of course failed to do it any harm although the shed was a bit the worse for wear. They set fire to it – it stubbornly refused to burn, they dropped a caravan on it – it proved tougher than the caravan, and they hit it with a wrecking ball, which did some harm but failed to wreck it.

The final test was to lift the Hilux to the top of a block of flats that was going to be demolished by controlled explosion. When the explosives went bang the building collapsed in a cloud of dust and the Toyota disappeared: but it wasn’t finished yet.

A digger was employed to dig the Toyota out of the debris and the mechanic did a bit of wreck-side maintenance with the result that not only did the engine start, but they were actually able to drive the persistent little survivor. The fifth generation of the Hilux included the N80, N90, N100 and N110 models. The fifth generation models remained based on the fourth generation but brought in new body styles. The Xtracab was given significantly more space behind the front seats so it could be fitted with rear seats to make it a 2+2, or with enough space for a couple of rifle cases or golf clubs, and a tool box or two.

Similarly for load carrying a longer wheelbase model was introduced with a 122″ (3.099 mm) wheelbase in addition to the existing long wheelbase 103″ (2,616 mm) model.

In 1991 Toyota began manufacturing the Hilux at its New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated plant which it shared in cooperation with General Motors. This would continue until the ending of Hilux manufacturing in the US in 1995 and its replacement with the new Tacoma. The fifth generation Hilux was also assembled by Volkswagen in Hanover, Germany, and marketed as the Volkswagen Taro between 1989-1994.

This model started out as a two-wheel drive commercial vehicle fitted with a 2.4 liter four cylinder diesel engine producing 82 bhp and torque of 122 lb/ft, but when the four-wheel drive model was introduced in 1994 the 2.4 liter diesel was down in power to 78 bhp with torque of 120 lb/ft @ 2,400 rpm. The two-wheel drive version had a standard cab and the four-wheel-drive an extended cab.

For the vehicles manufactured for other markets the engines for the fifth generation included some old familiar friends and some new faces. Starting with the most petite, the 2Y-U was a 1.8 liter (1,812 cc) inline four cylinder producing a modest 78 hp @ 5,000rpm and 100 lb/ft of torque @ 3,200 rpm: an engine for those for whom frugality at the fuel pump and being in the cheapest licensing category was of prime importance. For some export markets this engine was substituted for the equally petite 2Y inline four cylinder 1.8 liter (1,812 cc) producing 82 hp @ 4,800 rpm with 100 lb/ft torque @ 4,800 rpm. Both these engines were in production from 1988 until 1995.

Moving on up from the small engines was the 22R-E 2.4 liter (2.366 cc) SOHC with electronic fuel injection carried over from the fourth generation. This engine produced 113 hp @ 4,600 rpm and torque of 142 lb/ft @ 3,400 rpm: this engine being available from 1989-1997. Next up in size was the also familiar 3VZ-E 3.0 liter V6 producing a healthy 150 hp @ 4,800 rpm.

Two diesel engines were offered for the fifth generation Hilux: a 2.4 liter, and a 2.8 liter. The 2.4 liter (2,446 cc) 2L-II was an inline four cylinder producing 89 hp @ 4,200 rpm with torque of 123 lb/ft @ 2,400 rpm. So this was an engine that would produce the same sort of unexciting road performance as the small 1.8 liter gasoline units but which possessed a healthy low down torque so useful when the going gets soft and boggy, or the load is heavy: this engine was fitted from 1989-1997. The other diesel engine that was fitted in some markets was the 3L 2.8 liter (2,779 cc) inline four cylinder which produced 90 hp @ 4,000 rpm and torque of 139 lb/ft @ 2.400 rpm.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Sixth Generation (1997-2005)

The sixth generation Hilux were the N140, N150, N160, and N170 and would be the last that would be built in Japan, and the last for the Japanese market. These were still based on the earlier models and although the bodywork was restyled a couple of times and the engines changed, it was a case of “If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it”.

With the ever increasing demand for emissions controlled but highly efficient engines this model saw a lot of new power plants dropped into this tried and true survivor. The smallest engine fitted was the IRZ-E 2.0 liter (1,998 cc) SOHC inline four cylinder which was used for the Australian market Hilux Workmate two-wheel-drive models.

The next gasoline/petrol engine up from that was the 2RZ-FE 2.4 liter (2,438 cc) inline four cylinder equipped with double-valves (i.e. 16 valves) producing 142 hp. Up from that was the 3RZ-FE 2.7 liter (2,693 cc) inline four double-valve engine producing 150 hp and used exclusively in four-wheel-drive-models. The largest gasoline/petrol engine was the 5VZ-FE 3.4 liter (3,378 cc) double-valve V6 producing 190 hp.

Two diesel engines were offered for this generation, the first being the 5L 3.0 liter inline four cylinder producing 97 hp, and the second being the 2L-T 2.4 liter (2,446 cc) turbocharged UK specification engine producing a rather modest 62 hp.

Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck – Seventh and Eighth Generation (2005 – Present)

By the advent of the seventh generation of the Hilux manufacturing had been moved to Thailand, ensuring that the vehicle continued to be manufactured in the heart of Asia where so many are sold. The body style was dramatically modernized, the interior now actually lived up to the “High Luxury” description. The front suspension became even more improved being not only fully independent but now featuring coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers.

Under the hood could be found a variety of engines depending on the country in which the vehicle was sold. Notable was the VVT-i 4.0 liter DOHC V6 delivering a nice healthy 236 hp, which was available in Australia, South Africa, Venezuela, and China.

Not content with that but the Australians were also treated to a supercharged 302 hp version in the Toyota Racing Development Hilux 4000S and 4000SL models. So finally there was a Hilux that you could take for a bit of an excursion to the local drag strip: you might not win, but you could have a lot of fun trying.

The seventh and eight generation Hilux were made in versions ranging from inexpensive work vehicles through to the luxurious SR5 4×4 double-cab, which was more than double the price of its bottom of the line sibling.

Conclusion

The Toyota Hilux began life as an inexpensive and spartan little work truck made by Hino, and went on to earn itself a reputation as a dependable and affordable vehicle for situations where things were going to get tough, and the Hilux could be depended on to keep right on going. Toyota were able to correctly assess what people were looking for in a practical vehicle and made the Hilux to fulfill those needs despite that requiring coverage of a wide spectrum. The Hilux range expanded cautiously, but wisely, pioneering new concepts and delivering a vehicle that fired people’s imaginations, even up to the 302 hp Hilux 4000S and 4000SL models that would perform so beautifully on the unrestricted roads of Australia’s Northern Territory, where the journeys are often long and the going often tough.

The Hilux retains the title of “the car Top Gear could not destroy”. It has made its mark in the annals of automotive history, and is likely to be with us for a few more decades yet.

Dangerous MOT Fail – What To Do?

Cars and vans that are at least three years old should have an MOT test annually, so what happens if your vehicle fails the test and failure falls into the "dangerous" category. You will be advised that you should not drive it on the road in any circumstances even to another.

Garage themselves are now put in a difficult position since they have no powers to stop you taking your vehicle, so what options do you have?

Since 20th May this year, you may well have had a shock when visiting your local garage for your car’s annual MOT check. Especially if your car failed the MOT inspection, and the defect was labelled ‘dangerous’. Why? Well, accompanying that notification will be a warning – from the government – that your car should not be driven on the road until that dangerous defect has been fixed.

So what’s new? Ever since the MOT started MOT Testers could note, if in their opinion, the car they’ve just Tested, is dangerous to drive. So why, of a sudden, have things changed?

Well, on this one you really can blame the European Union. New EU rules on the MOT took effect in May 2018, so now, instead of the Tester deciding what is, or is not a dangerous defect, he or she now has no choice; all dangerous defects are now specifically defined and identified in the new Manual that MOT Testers have to scrupulously abide by.

After changes to the MOT Test regulations in May 2018, Testers are now obliged to specify certain failure items as “Dangerous”.

If it’s dangerous, don’t drive it! That’s the law…

Strangely, since the new rules came into force, the popular press has frequently run headlines blaming MOT garages for holding customers’ vehicles ‘to ransom’ when dangerous faults are discovered. Yet that’s fake news – it has always been illegal to drive a car when it has a dangerous defect. What’s new is that such defects are now clearly specified and defined by the Government in their MOT Scheme – so it’s not just down to the MOT Tester’s opinion. Now, if your car fails the MOT due to a defect which the Government says is dangerous, by driving it on the road, you are committing an offence. Remember too, that the MOT Scheme belongs to the government, not garages or their employees. That ‘don’t drive your car’ message isn’t from the Tester or the Testing Station, it’s directly from the government.

The problem is, of course, that should you choose to drive the vehicle away from the MOT garage with that dangerous defect, and the garage can’t stop you doing that if you decide to do so, then a police car spotting you on the road will be able to look up that MOT failure, and know you shouldn’t be driving your car – so penalty points could follow. And if that dangerous component fails, causing a collision, and perhaps death or injury, then you really would be in trouble!

Be prepared for the worst!

As a result of these changes last May, over four times as many cars are failing the MOT with dangerous defects than there were beforehand. So be careful, you might easily be caught out!

If you drop your car off for an MOT inspection, be prepared. It’s no good dropping it off in the morning, and expecting to collect it from the MOT garage in the afternoon to then pick the kids up from school. If it fails the MOT with a dangerous defect which can’t be easily and quickly fixed, then you won’t be able to make that school run – not good at all, so make sure you’ve got a backup plan in place.

Keep in touch with the garage

However, depending on the nature of the problem, the garage which carried out the MOT may be able to easily resolve the problem, but they will need to be able to contact you, to get your permission to do it. How galling it would be to arrive at the garage in the late afternoon to find your car has failed the MOT with a relatively easy to fix dangerous defect, but they couldn’t get hold of you to obtain your permission to do so – but now its too late to get the part to solve the problem. So always make sure you leave your mobile number so that the garage can call you, or at the very least send you a message.

Taking the car elsewhere for repair

Now here’s a problem. Your normal garage is situated a fair distance from where you work. However, there’s a small MOT garage just up the road, so you drop your car in during your lunch break to get it MOT Tested, expecting to pick it up and drive it home when you’ve finished work. You get a call from the garage saying that the car has failed the MOT with a dangerous defect, but shouldn’t be driven away, but whilst they can fix the problem, they’re very busy and it won’t be ready until the day after tomorrow – what next?

The only real option is to have the vehicle taken away by a breakdown truck either to your own regular garage if they can fix it on time, or perhaps to another garage who can.

Since it has always been illegal for anyone to drive a dangerous or unroadworthy vehicle on the road for any reason, this includes to and from an MOT testing station the new categories of failure does not change this.

Our advice in these situations is to choose your MOT station wisely based on a recommendation from other users and not based on price as cheapest is not always the best option.

Datzen and the Art of Project Cars – LS-Powered 280Z!

Building a YouTube show is not unlike building a project car: they’re both seen by many, judged by all, and take more work to assemble than anyone can imagine. These things engulf people in the pursuit of perfection and creativity, as both machines are often a doppelgänger for the personalities behind them. Maybe that’s why folks have become endeared with Emily and Aaron Reeves’ Flyin’ Sparks Garage, a YouTube channel that’s dedicated to the seeds and soil of grassroots hot rodding. The show is produced in their home shop in Mabank, Texas – just an hour outside of Dallas – and their projects are centered on honest, low-buck swaps and upgrades on everything from 2005 Pontiac GTOs to 1978 Datsun 280Zs. The channel has a dedicated following, with over 3.2-million views since the channel’s launch in 2013, and recently the duo announced their upcoming Velocity Channel show, Live, Love, Wrench.

But for Emily and Aaron, this story goes back 18 years to a mechanical fail that left the “Datzen” on the back burner as Aaron and Emily grew up. The Datzen was there when the duo met in church; it was Aaron’s first car. As they dated and grew up together, however, it became something of an albatross.

“Didn’t you pay $50 a week for it?” Emily asked as our interview began. “Yeah. I couldn’t afford it, it was 1,500 bucks,” Aaron recalled. “This was 18 years ago and I made payments on it for about two months to pay for it. Originally the car was parked just because we were kids and didn’t have any money. It was a very old fuel injection system that I didn’t understand. I didn’t have the skills to deal with it, and as a young man, there are a lot of things you go through that build the pieces of your view of yourself. And this one did not do me any favors, this entire car.” The Datzen’s archaic fuel-injection wiring was ultimately failing, and they parked the car while moving on down life’s road while the two found their own careers in diesel repair and fashion modeling (we’ll let you guess who did what).

They continued building a few project cars, like Emily’s “Roxy” GTO, but the Datzen sat with no plan in sight. While it hit Aaron hard personally, it’s one of the most venerable and relatable stories out there – short of the ones that “should’ve never been sold.” That first project car, especially as a young adult, is one of the first things someone wholly owns, but that personal investment can really hurt when yet-to-be-had wisdom and experience is met with seemingly unsolvable hurdles.

Then in 2013, the Texas couple launched Flyin’ Sparks Garage on YouTube. It came out of a dream for sharing what they felt was the reality of spinning wrenches at the home shop. The cable TV car shows, to their credit, focused on dramatic “one-week” builds, dream team parts combinations, and a departure from what they felt was how folks really experienced their own projects.

“One of the coolest things is hearing people say, ‘Man, I watched some of these shows, and the car is built in a half-hour and I think, ‘I could never do that. When I go out, I have problems with every little thing!’” Emily explained. “We show the obstacles and overcoming them — and in doing it, having fun. This is part of hot rodding, and part of building stuff is overcoming problems. Nothing’s gonna be perfect.

“It’s very back country — just make it work — and that was a huge insecurity of ours, but we realized that the bulk of our audience likes it. ” Aaron continued, “It struck a chord with them, and it became more interesting than if we had given them lots of technical advice, so we were able to settle into that place and just what we do.”

In 2016, with for their 10th wedding anniversary approaching, they were looking for a way to pull all the tangents of their lives together to celebrate and began thinking about Datzen. There was roughly a year to rebuild it before the 2017 HOT ROD Power Tour, and they wanted it to be there because the Power Tour is where they spent their honeymoon ten years prior. If they were to make the 2017 Power Tour, they’d be committing to a complete re-think of the car. Though electrical issues had side-lined it, the car had also rotted while sitting in project purgatory.

First the original 2.8L L28E inline-six with its tiny manual gearbox were yanked out before the car was set back on the ground to have its floor pans punched out. New sheet metal was hammered and stitched into place by Emily while Aaron reinforced the chassis rails with box tubing.

A set of CX Racing coil-overs were installed to get the car into the weeds, while a Silvermine Motors Stage 4 big-brake kit clamp down on a custom four-lug set of American Racing’s 18-inch VF502, 8-inches-wide up front and 10 inches out back. To huddle over those big meats, a venerable set of pocket flares were bolted on.

This work was all done to pour a new foundation for an LS2-based build that packed CP pistons, a Comp cam, and the set of Patriot heads from her previous GTO project. To keep it from being “just another” LS swap, they decided to fabricate a set of 180-degree cross-over headers (for a unique engine note) and topped everything off with an eight-stack Inglese intake backed by FAST’s XFI fuel-injection. A T-56 six-speed was bolted up behind the combo, and a custom mount was fabricated to hold it while a set of mounts from Dirty Dingo suspended the engine block.

A friend of theirs, Aaron Sellers of Pac Fab, CNC milled a custom set of valve covers for the build.

And then it happened — Murphy and his maligned laws visited the Flyin’ Sparks Garage. A miscalculation in their custom pistons meant that it didn’t take much for the new CP bullets to tap the freshly-installed Patriot heads, bending valves in cylinder six and killing compression shortly after firing up the motor and getting it dialed-in. They had checked for valve clearance during the build, but the pistons were too tight to the combustion chamber and still made contact while running. This meant a last-millisecond long-block swap with a 5.3, giving Datzen a functional heart for their odyssey.

They were able to slam it together in the days leading up to the tour, but like any project, there were teething issues. “I was at Texas Motor speedway doing a job, so I couldn’t leave until the races were done. Aaron picked me up at the speedway, left Roxy there, and we headed out,” Emily recalled. “The build was messed up, like the alternator wasn’t charging. So we ended up stopping the car in a parking lot. I jumped in Roxy and got another alternator. I had to go to South Dallas to the only 24-hour Auto Zone!” With a healthy 14 volts coursing through Datzen’s wired veins, they were able to cannonball it 18 hours to Kansas City, MS for the start of last year’s Power Tour.

Aaron continued, “I’ll never forget when we actually rolled in to the hotel, I think it was like 10:30 at night, and we finally made it to a place where we could rest — albeit it was a few hours until we got up and went to the next venue — but I mean it was a year of dreaming and then a couple months of just complete thrashing and we rolled in there, set our chairs out, had a few beers and it was just like, ‘Okay, we’ve made it to this point. Anything that goes wrong beyond now is manageable, we can make it to the next venue.’ And that was huge.”

American Racing drilled a custom bolt pattern into their VF-502s for this project, and you can now find a Datsun fitment in the catalog. The stance is locked-in with 18x8s up front, and 18x10s in the rear.

Indeed, it made it the next stop in Newton, IA; then it made it to Davenport, IL, and to every day of the 2017 Tour with the worries behind it. Slowly, the stress of that last minute thrash burned away like fuel in their tank as they made their way to Bowling Green, KY. In fact, one of the few worries left was just over how people would react to a Datsun at Power Tour. Our arms are open to imports, but the event is largely dominated by Detroit-bleeding hot rodders, and the duo weren’t sure what to expect. “People freaking loved it! Everybody had a story. Either they had a Datsun or they had a car that always got beat by a Datsun,” Emily said. “We all have opinions about different people’s style and how they mod stuff, but when it comes down to it, we’re just all gearheads and that was the coolest feeling — to feel so appreciated for our hard work.”

Building a YouTube channel has grown from hobbies to full-time gigs for many, but what’s been beautiful about this era of programming is it allows many niches of the automotive culture to find a home. With their humble roots, Aaron and Emily chose to focus on their channel on attainable, home-built projects. “It doesn’t make sense to only promote $8,000 superchargers,” Aaron mentioned. “Because what Emily and I want is for you to go and work on your stuff and enjoy it, and have adventures. So it only makes sense to direct people in a way that they can afford and enjoy it.” In essence, it was a response to the shows didn’t have the garage-built hot rod in mind, where money is socked over months and years to grab a carefully-selected list of parts that aren’t just set by dreams of horsepower, but also a realistic budget.

This git-er-done attitude eventually caught the Velocity Channel’s attention with Live, Laugh, Wrench, Emily and Aaron’s upcoming TV show. While they might’ve had to change shops, the home-grown philosophy of the Flyin’ Sparks Garage back in Texas is kept as they tackle new builds and carry their persistent spirit. “Rod Rutledge is a friend of ours who died on a motorcycle, but we met years earlier on Power Tour. He basically taught me how to not worry about life. Just roll with the punches, it doesn’t have to be right,” Aaron explained. “Enjoy the process of life and don’t be so uptight about it. It’s changed me, if you met me 10 years ago you would not want to hang out with me because I was just so worried about all the details and what people think. He taught me that even if everything’s going wrong, laugh and just have fun.”

Emily went on to explain it a little further, recalling the first time she built an engine with Aaron. Back then as teenagers, they were rebuilding the engine of her family’s F-150. Aaron had her building the other half of its V8 to learn, working through each step together in torquing down the heads and valvetrain. As the parts on the table dwindled, she could tell things were about to wrap up and nervously asked Aaron to check her work. “And he was like, ‘No, you need to feel the feeling. If you mess something up, you need to feel that feeling,’” she recited. “‘And if you did it all right, you need to feel that feeling. If I check your work, you won’t have any feelings. You know when this engine cranks up and it runs great, you will own that.’ I didn’t know any other girls who were doing that.”

Really, it’s that infectious persistence that’s at the heart of Datzen, and everything they’ve built on screen. Regular viewers of their show will remember that Datzen was named in spirit of The Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert M. Pirsig’s introspective look at the human condition from the perch of a Honda CB77. “It’s the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top,” he once wrote.

“Say a girl wants to get into cars ,and she doesn’t really know where to start — her power steering’s making a crazy noise. She could go get a basic tool kit, research online, and she can have the most amazing experience overcoming something,” Emily reinforced. “But if people have too much judgment about the results or about having to ask people for help, someone could totally be debilitated. I know it’s not always easy, but you have to look at the big picture and think that there’s a goal here and it’s going to feel really cool on the other side of it. There might be a lot of mountains to climb to get to the peak of that one that I’m looking at… but it’s worth it.”
