Helium Network: Revolutionizing Wireless Connectivity with Crypto Incentives
In the ever-evolving realm of cryptocurrency, numerous projects grapple with the elusive bridge between theory and real-world application. However, the Helium Network stands out as a shining example, actively transforming the landscape of wireless connectivity with its innovative approach. This article delves into the Helium Network ecosystem, exploring its cryptocurrencies, functionalities, and potential impact on the future of mobile networks.
The Power of Decentralization:
The Helium Network operates on a decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) model, leveraging a global network of Helium hotspots hosted by individuals. These hotspots, essentially low-powered wireless routers, provide internet access to devices within their range. By participating in this network, users earn rewards in the form of Helium’s native cryptocurrency, Helium (HNT). This unique incentive structure incentivizes network growth and fosters a collaborative environment.
A Symphony of Cryptocurrencies:
The Helium Network ecosystem revolves around four critical cryptocurrencies:
Helium (HNT): The lifeblood of the network, HNT serves as the primary reward for hotspot owners who contribute to network coverage. Users can also burn HNT to create Data Credits, which power data transfer across the network.
Mobile Helium (MOBILE): This utility token rewards users for sharing their mobile data connection through the Helium Mobile app. MOBILE incentivizes broader network participation and strengthens cellular connectivity.
Internet of Things (IoT) Token (IOT): While not currently tradable, the IOT token represents a future reward mechanism for devices on the Helium Network. It is designed to incentivize the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices within the network and facilitate communication between them.
Data Credits (DCs): Representing units of data transfer within the Helium Network, DCs are burned to facilitate data transmission between devices.
Bridging the Gap: Helium Mobile and 5G Integration:
The Helium Network isn’t just about Wi-Fi. Through its Helium Mobile initiative, the project aims to revolutionize mobile network infrastructure by integrating 5G capabilities with blockchain technology. Users with compatible smartphones can contribute cellular network coverage through the app, earning MOBILE tokens in return. This collaborative approach holds immense potential for expanding and democratizing access to high-speed mobile data.
HNT and MOBILE: Potential Powerhouses in the Decentralized Future?
Helium (HNT) and Mobile Helium (MOBILE) have garnered significant attention within the crypto sphere, and with good reason. Both coins are integral to the functioning of the Helium Network, a revolutionary project actively building a decentralized wireless infrastructure. HNT, the network’s primary token, incentivizes users to host Helium hotspots, expanding network coverage and earning rewards. MOBILE, on the other hand, rewards users for sharing their mobile data connection through the Helium Mobile app, contributing to a more robust cellular network.
The current price action of HNT and MOBILE can be volatile, as is the nature of cryptocurrency markets. However, their long-term potential hinges on the success of the Helium Network itself. As the network gains traction and disrupts the traditional wireless landscape, both HNT and MOBILE could see significant price appreciation. The increasing demand for data, coupled with the growing focus on decentralized solutions, positions these tokens as potential long-term investments. However, it’s crucial to remember that cryptocurrency investments are inherently risky, and thorough research is essential before making any financial decisions.
Current Market Frenzy:
The Helium Network and its associated cryptocurrencies have captured the attention of the crypto community. Notably, both HNT and MOBILE have experienced significant price surges in recent times, reflecting investor confidence in the project’s potential. However, it’s crucial to remember that cryptocurrency markets are inherently volatile, and responsible investment decisions require thorough research.
Beyond the Hype: A Sustainable Ecosystem on Solana:
Helium leverages the power of the Solana blockchain for efficient transaction processing and network scalability. This partnership ensures that the Helium Network can accommodate future growth and maintain a robust infrastructure.
The Road Ahead:
The Helium Network presents a compelling vision for the future of wireless connectivity. By harnessing the power of decentralization and incentivizing user participation with cryptocurrency rewards, Helium fosters a collaborative environment that could reshape the way we access and share data. While the project remains in its growth phase, its real-world applications and innovative approach hold significant promise for the future of mobile networks and the broader blockchain landscape.

X-15 Launch from B-52 Mothership by NASA on The Commons Via Flickr: This photo illustrates how the X-15 rocket-powered aircraft was taken aloft under the wing of a B-52. Because of the large fuel consumption, the X-15 was air launched from a B-52 aircraft at 45,000 ft and a speed of about 500 mph. This was one of the early powered flights using a pair of XLR-11 engines (until the XLR-99 became available). The X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft 50 ft long with a wingspan of 22 ft. It was a missile-shaped vehicle with an unusual wedge-shaped vertical tail, thin stubby wings, and unique fairings that extended along the side of the fuselage. The X-15 weighed about 14,000 lb empty and approximately 34,000 lb at launch. The XLR-99 rocket engine, manufactured by Thiokol Chemical Corp., was pilot controlled and was capable of developing 57,000 lb of rated thrust (actual thrust reportedly climbed to 60,000 lb). North American Aviation built three X-15 aircraft for the program. The X-15 research aircraft was developed to provide in-flight information and data on aerodynamics, structures, flight controls, and the physiological aspects of high-speed, high-altitude flight. A follow-on program used the aircraft as a testbed to carry various scientific experiments beyond the Earth's atmosphere on a repeated basis. For flight in the dense air of the usable atmosphere, the X-15 used conventional aerodynamic controls such as rudder surfaces on the vertical stabilizers to control yaw and canted horizontal surfaces on the tail to control pitch when moving in synchronization or roll when moved differentially. For flight in the thin air outside of the appreciable Earth's atmosphere, the X-15 used a reaction control system. Hydrogen peroxide thrust rockets located on the nose of the aircraft provided pitch and yaw control. Those on the wings provided roll control. Because of the large fuel consumption, the X-15 was air launched from a B-52 aircraft at 45,000 ft and a speed of about 500 mph. Depending on the mission, the rocket engine provided thrust for the first 80 to 120 sec of flight. The remainder of the normal 10 to 11 min. flight was powerless and ended with a 200-mph glide landing. Generally, one of two types of X-15 flight profiles was used: a high-altitude flight plan that called for the pilot to maintain a steep rate of climb, or a speed profile that called for the pilot to push over and maintain a level altitude. The X-15 was flown over a period of nearly 10 years--June 1959 to Oct. 1968--and set the world's unofficial speed and altitude records of 4,520 mph (Mach 6.7) and 354,200 ft (over 67 mi) in a program to investigate all aspects of piloted hypersonic flight. Information gained from the highly successful X-15 program contributed to the development of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo manned spaceflight programs, and also the Space Shuttle program. The X-15s made a total of 199 flights and were manufactured by North American Aviation. X-15-1, serial number 56-6670, is now located at the National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC. https://www.tumblr.com/fromtenthousandfeet/766065012296056833/so-basically-what-im-getting-is-that-hybe-and?source=share
You know I've worked under a CEO who had a massive ego. With men like that and companies that have a culture like that, you'll see that ultimately decisions will be based on the CEOs "gut instincts". I'd bring up data driven proposals based on market research and argue for initiatives I believed in because I naively thought my success = company profits from my proposals. I quickly realised that nope, people who showed worse results than me got shifted to better projects because they were massaging the CEOs ego better. You'd have treat his ego like a delicate baby bird egg and make him think what you want is his decision. This is a dynamic in a lot of places but it's esp strong in asian workplaces and being a woman also unfortunately makes a difference. I admit instead of sticking by my principles, I adopted a similar approach and immediately started getting more acclaim for my work even though imo it was actually worse than before. I ultimately got tired of all of it and moved to an mnc where things are less about catering to one man.
Anyway this long rant was just to say, you'd think that in the face of overwhelming evidence that they're not backing a strong solo talent like Jimin enough, this dumbass music label would course correct and fix their mistakes. This is why so many pjms think Jimin's not continuing with hybe. But I'm gonna say men like bang si hyuk who probably solely credits himself as the brains behind the success of BTS more than any member and think their thoughts are always right, would rather double down than admit they made a mistake and did not identify Jimin's solo talent correctly.
Of course I don't have any inside scoop on Hybe and perhaps I'm projecting too much of my personal experience here but as much as I don't like MHJ, I can identify with that aspect of her complaints which were obvious from the messages she exposed that she exchanged with BSH. Or that post by the Hybe employee you shared who talked about getting pushed out of the company. Hell even the myriad controversies that keep getting exposed about Hybe employees bitching about their artists on forums, getting exposed for insider trading, potentially being on DC gallery and selling info to ssngs, the cloying nature of that internal report, embezzlement scandals etc - I know they're a big corporation but it is not normal to have so many issues in such a short period of time. It's a symptom of a toxic workplace where things are festering under the surface.
A bunch of misogynistic, old Korean men decided to back JK and his bad boy aesthetic instead of Jimin whose appeal is more soft and unisex - it's not surprising right? We talk about how men look down on kpop esp boy groups because their fanbase is primarily women, and we talk at length about how sea countries have a higher tendency to shun Jimin because of some internalised homophobia (wild considering we don't know anything about his romantic life) - but these are the same type of people who are in charge of orgs like Hybe. Of course their asses don't back him or see his potential. Also why they're struggling so hard to break into western markets. They cannot see beyond their own twisted ideas of what makes a successful artist - esp a male solo artist
Truly I think they personally don't see his appeal or like his music and they think that means he can't make it even though at this point it's becoming kind of obvious he's perhaps the most popular member in the US and latam. And damn with who, he's doing amazing in Russia, Europe and India too. Will they get their heads out of their asses and give him the promo he deserves? I really don't know. I don't think he's parted ways with Hybe like some pjms so unless he plans to in the future, I can only hope they're eventually forced to see the light.
PS I'm from a sea country, currently working in the middle east so I don't bring up Asian work culture or sea / asian countries to be derogatory but from personal experience. Also sorry about how long this got!
Thank you to the anon who sent this to me so long ago (in response to the weekly industry trends leak). I've been waiting for the right time to share this and today feels like the day with the announcement of the new BigHit CEO announcement.
I saw the most amazing comment from a KPJM today - only pigs survive in pigsties. Maybe the new CEO will be great and a much needed fresh start, but it's also possible that she's held on for so long in the company because she's willing to do what's necessary to keep her job and move up the ladder. We shall see. I'm staying neutral for now.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience and your insights.

New Comics (the actual spoilers edition)
DC's Lex and the City #1:
Honestly this has been a pretty ordinary anthology. I did hiss quietly to myself that the percentage of Bat stories in this was higher than at least half the issues of Brave and the Bold, but it is what it is.
I thought on top of the stories themselves I’d talk about who got to write them, as I’ve got another post percolating about that.
Lex and the City (by Sina Grace): I swear I've seen versions of this story before (think one had Cat Grant instead of Trish Q). Can't remember where, would have to dig, it's probably in an anthology around Rebirth.
I also can think of at least one episode of Lois & Clark with approximate this plot (Lois is doing the interview), and presumably it's happened in other tv versions of the Superman franchise.
It's...fine. It's the sort of Sex and the City joke story that you'd presume from the title.
Grace's other work includes the Claire Clover backups from the end of Tamaki's 'Tec run, a Hartley story from the first Pride anthology, and the opening story of Beast World Tour Atlantis, among others. I think the best piece I’ve read from him is the Atlantis story, which balanced a fair amount of plot and characters simultaneously. He’s also the guy getting that Shazam fill next month about Jon Kent (after working with Nicole Maines on Absolute Power: Super Son).
A Valentine’s Day Gift For Poison Ivy (by Maggie Tokuda-Hall): this felt very informed by BTAS characterisation rather than main continuity, and set *handwave* some time when they both were still villains (Alfred is alive too, as another data point).
It’s exactly the sort of puff Harley/Ivy story that inevitably ends up in at least 2 anthologies a year.
In terms of characterisation – I don’t read Harley focused stuff, but I can definitely say it’s not written by someone who feels like they read Wilson’s Poison Ivy. This is because the characterisation of both Harley and Ivy feels like it’s from the general osmosis vibes: Ivy is ‘a die-hard environmentalist’ and so might have ethical objections to an ‘infant leopard sealskin’ coat, but Harley’s just fine wearing it and running off with it. Which: Ivy cares about PLANTS. Her environmentalism strains have always revolved around the plant kingdom, not animals, while Harley’s the one who keeps animals as pets. It’s a weird villainous Cruella DeVille sort of note to add to the story for Harley, while these sort of fluff shorts are usually going out of their way to excuse both Harley and Ivy as ethical criminals only committing victimless crimes against big business.
I also rolled my eyes at what seemed to be a period piece taking a wide swipe at Cybertrucks. When do you want this to be set? (Part of me wanted to give the story props for playing up the ‘using Lex as a Musk insert’ tendency that’s happened in the last handful of years, part of me is mourning the loss of the ‘Lex as Trump insert’ of earlier years, part of me is unsure that Tokuda-Hall knows that Lex has a ‘Lexla’ brand in comics)
I will give the hat tip to it being a lesbian love story in this anthology, because I’ve dinged DC in previous years for managing to avoid showing a single openly queer relationship in the Valentines anthology.
This is Tokuda-Hall’s first DC work, and she only has two other credits on LOCG (both for independent YA graphic novels). And I have to say, that background shows. Good on her for pitching, but I would like to see more evidence she’s read recent main continuity works. They should talk to her about the teen graphic novels line where it matters less.
Beautiful Lies (by Jon Rivera): Victor Fries has been getting a bunch of solid stories recently, and this one joins the pack. I don’t think I’ve seen him used as a joke to dunk on for AGES. On the other hand, this is written in reaction to contemporary economic problems, but Victor’s got Nora in a tube here. So we are very much running with background default ‘what people know about Freeze’ for the story.
I thought the commentary on Batman v Bruce Wayne’s work in Gotham for ordinary people was fairly straightforward in this, but it definitely hewed straight to the classic tropes of whenever it’s brought up (Batman with the ‘call this number, they’ll help you find a job’ business card!) The tragedy at the centre of this felt very in conversation with various economic downtimes, as it raised ‘what will you do for economic security’.
I also need to get around to writing about my feelings about the way various writers use the concept of gentrification in comics, particularly in regards to Gotham, but that’s a bigger project than just this so I’ll just stick a pin in it here that this is another example I need to come back to.
Jon Rivera did a bunch of work in the Young Animal line with Cave Carson. This is the first story he’s had with DC for almost 7 years. I feel it’s pretty obvious, reading the anthology, that he’s one of the writers with the most comics experience in here.
Together Again (by Charles Skaggs): finally, a piece in this anthology that feels like it’s written specifically in reaction to real, published comics. This is a World’s Finest: Teen Titans based story reflecting on their first mission as a team. It’s not based off their original Silver Age original team up as far as I can tell, but it is very much in the updated vibe of Silver Age stories that the World’s Finest stories use. It’s also using old post-Crisis factoids, like the fact that Dick and Wally used to have standing guy’s camping trip arrangements (we end up feeling like this is riffing several issues from Titans 1999).
I enjoyed it! The way Dick, Wally, Roy and Garth were bouncing off each other felt very similar to the diner scene in Titans #1 1999 (obvious parallels are obvious). You can tell they’re friends.
Charles Skaggs’ other DC piece that I can find is a period-set JSA story from DC’s Terrors Through Time in 2022. He’s clearly a DC fan who actually reads comics and understands how to fit things into continuity, and the person top of my list in this for DC to offer more work to.
To Live and Date in Gotham (by Brendan Hay): Is this generally kinda meh fanonish characterisation? Yes. Does everyone need to chill? Also yes. Look, I knew this one was going to be controversial from when the anthology was solicited. And now that I’ve read it, it’s just generally the sort of light fluff you see in anthologies, where everyone feels a bit skewed from their main writers.
Personally what I think everyone should be up in arms about is the ‘Teen-Bats’ line, because while you might THINK on first glance this might be the glorious return of Becky and Aaron Langstrom to canon, I strongly suspect this is actually referencing Tristan Grey, given the various age differences (Aaron should by any standard still be a kid; Becky if she’d aged consistently might have reached her early teens by now, though I think preteen is more likely). Anyway, Man-Bats and Tim are a flavour that go great together with plenty of backstory, why are you faking me out on suggesting I might have got my Langstrom kids back?!? How dare you Brendan Hay!!!! (Tongue firmly in cheek for all of this)
Yes, Brendan Hay wrote that Tim and Damian story in Brave and the Bold that everyone already whinged about, but what I personally want to note is that he also wrote “Say Yes To the Mess” in last year’s Valentine’s anthology, which was that story about Diana getting propositioned by a random assortment of characters, Diana explaining why people didn’t really want to date her, they just wanted connection with another person, and then declaring ‘actually what’s Galantine’s Day?!?’ in what felt like the most awkward out on having Diana go on an actual date with a woman.
And I think that’s probably worth looking at in context of the ho ho ho Steph and Cass aren’t dating, they’re just anti-Valentines Day together! stuff in this story. Will write Tim/Bernard. Will also just stick two female characters together and go wink wink wink. Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. (This is not a trend I’m fond of)
I don’t think Hay’s views on characterisation match this section of tumblr’s, and I think from some of the commentary dug up that this is another example of ‘writer has spent noticeable amounts of time in fandom and been influenced by it’ plus he’s explicitly said he just wrote parts of the story in his head and excused not explaining things because he decided they happened off panel. Which…look. I’ve certainly noted that various writers before him have done that (Devin Grayson’s approach to Dick, Megan Fitzmartin’s approach to Bernard) but generally you don’t ADMIT IT straight out, especially as he clearly worked through ways it could have been told better, yet failed to use them.
Riddle Me Kiss (by Sabrina Futch): look, the oddest thing about this is that this doesn’t really track with any of the common lines on Eddie as a character that have been written over the last several decades. It’s definitely not the Snyder version of Ridder, which was adopted by Tom King, which is probably the most prominent that’s not Eddie just having a fun time being a criminal or busy doing high level work. It’s treating his riddles as more like Baffler levels of jokes rather than actual challenges. It’s really framing him as a pathetic villain, rather than a high level Rogue. (Also as has been mentioned by others, Ram V. did a far better Riddler Valentine’s Day story a couple of years back).
Sabrina Futch is currently working as an editor on a bunch of DC books; mostly as an associate editor, so pretty junior. This is her second writing credit for DC – she got to write the text for Batman Uncovered. Honestly I just think she’s a developing writer.
Roses are Red…Blood Is, Too (by Callie C. Miller): I think this is supposed to be set during the 2003 Teen Titans run (apparently the version of Brother Blood in this is specifically from that run and Outsiders at the time), especially as it’s set in San Francisco. Both characters feel pretty young. But fundamentally, I don’t really care about Gar and Raven’s relationship, so I can’t analyse how well it’s drawn as I don’t read much about them.
It’s…fine. This ship has been everywhere for a few years now, which is probably got a lot to do with people who were kids when the Teen Titans 2003 cartoon came out now getting work at DC.
This is Callie Miller’s first credit anywhere, and it’s exactly the sort of first credit you see that may or may not translate into further work. I don’t think it’s got the spark that’s going to have people clamouring to see more.
Heartbreak Lake (by Dave Wielgosz): you know when you’re reading a story that feels like it’s setting up a bunch of explanations to fit various sections of canon together or retcon a few things? That’s what this is. I haven’t read a lot of Hawkman stuff, but this is obviously doing some work with the present situation with the Hawks and their older stories, and look, is it really a Hawk story if some sort of massive confusing retcon isn’t being navigated?
It’s the very loved-and-lost story of the set and refocusing Carter on the present.
Dave Wielgosz is a mainstay DC editor. His writing credits include Man-Bat 2021 (which I thought was a really well considered Kirk Langstorm story compared to a lot of other uses of the character since Rebirth outside of JLD) and a bunch of anthology shorts. He’s a ‘can get a story in an anthology any time he asks’ sort of guy, and works with a wide range of characters.

Examining Elden Ring Voice Actors Attempt #1 (a.k.a. getting distracted by Comic, Film & TV history)
I've heard for a while that FromSoft will occasionally use the same voice actors across multiple games. And considering that this is the low-hanging fruit of making multiverse connections across games, I have put off looking into this until now. But actually what first caught my attention when browsing through the voice actor names was that Pip Torrens is credited as both White Mask Varré and Radahn. That's an interesting combo.
Also learned that Malenia's voice actor is Pippa Bennett Warner, making their battle a contest of Pip vs. Pippa on the meta level - which is very silly.
The next sections will have significant spoilers for the end of the comic/TV show Preacher.
So then I was thinking, well what does Pip Torrens sound like when he's playing a character without the slightly creaky affect given to Varré? This is the first clip that I popped on - his introduction as Herr Klaus Helmet Starr in Preacher (2017-2019) where within a span of 3 minutes his character demonstrates that he has a snark and a kind of bored confidence, and then in a test exercise almost effortlessly brutalizes a much more muscled man. By using about 3 dirty tricks to get him crawling on the ground, and then calmly and wordlessly fetching a golf club to hit the man's skull until he stops moving.
I read the Preacher comic (1995-2000), at least 15 years ago and most of what I recall is that it was. Not a pleasant time. For any of the characters. Also there was an Irish Vampire. So that all sounds par for the course for the series, and was part of the reason why my thought was "They're adapting THAT? I don't think that I need to experience that story again..." when it was announced several years ago. But what really stunned me was when 1 minute into the clip the testing montage started up to the background music of Blood on the Risers. A song that I specifically called out and connected to Varré in a previous post. So I decided to dig deeper.
The second thing that stood out to me was that the Dungeater face data shows him as having a scar and blind eye on his left side eye which is very similar to "Herr Starr" in the way that he is styled for the TV show and comic source material. Usually this would not be seen by the player - although he is a rare case where you can see inside his helmet if getting close enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a side note for the actual voice actor for the Dungeater - Jim Johnson - his acting resume is fairly sparse in comparison with Pip Torrens. One of his very few named character roles is from 2020 where he played a gold counterfeiter in an Assassins Creed: Gold audiodrama.
But then I read the full biography for Herr Starr in the comic and refreshed my memory on several other details:
"Herr Starr was a soldier of the Wehrmacht [the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945], a man totally devoted to law, order, and duty. This drew the attention of secret organization The Grail, and Starr was brought in after being convinced that The Grail was the best way to fight the evils of the world. Starr quickly rose to power and became the Sacred Executioner, but Starr had plans to become even more powerful at The Grail's highest position, Allfather." - DC Fandom
His main contribution to the plot is as a villain and leader of this Grail organization built around protecting the divine lineage of Jesus Christ, of which the modern day representative has severe cognitive problems because of all the centuries of inbreeding. So Starr tries (and fails) to get the main character Jesse to swap in and masquerade as the true descendant of Christ in their apocalypse cult because Jesse's whole deal is that he is possessed by Genesis, an offspring of an angel and devil who is more powerful than God Almighty (Preacher is generally a story with the plot of find God who had abandoned His Creation. Spoilers: God dies at the end). Being possessed by Genesis gives Jesse the power to command anyone to do anything - as long as they also speak English - though he really doesn't abuse it as much as one might think (in the comic anyways, idk what they did in the show). Mostly he wants to figure out how to free Genesis. Herr Star changes tune real quick from the esoteric goals of the Grail organization to burning all of its resources on a pithy personal vendetta against Jesse.
And the comic sure went with the approach that it's fair game to physically and psychologically torture ex-Nazis! This man is bald because his hair fell out a long time ago from stress (the eye injury was actually from a traumatizing childhood incident), and then through the course of the comic his head has a scar carved down in from front to back that makes it look like a dick (thus why he was trying on wigs in the above screenshot), and he has an ear ripped off, and a lower leg eaten by cannibals, and much much worse. And while the TV show was not aiming to be a perfectly accurate adaptation from what I've seen discussion about they did show the much much worse.
One last note about Preacher is that I appreciate these panels of the Saint of Killers shooting God Almighty in the face and then taking a nap in the big chair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, the career of Pip Torrens ranges from 1984 to the present and is quite varied with many roles of short duration. Several selections below, which is almost entirely an excuse to make a list of the British crime procedurals and historical dramas that I think look interesting:
1992/1995 he played archeologist Howard Carter in "The Young Indiana Jones Adventures"
1993 in "The Remains of the Day" as a doctor who has a brief interaction with Anthony Hopkins' character at a gas pump. This is a movie I learned about on a podcast in which Anthony Hopkins's character reminisces about his days as butler to a (fictional) Lord Darlington whose reputation was in ruin post-WWII due to having Nazi sympathies before the war.
1997 he had a role also coincidentally named "Carter" in an episode of the delightfully named "Crime Traveller" (solving crimes by travelling back in time!) on an episode called "A Death in the Family", as role as a Major Lawrence Brownham in a show called "Soldier Soldier" about the daily lives of soldiers on peacekeeping missions, and as a character named Robert Ferguson on a short-lived show called "Bodyguards" about a protection unit for the British Government.
2002 he played Charles Darwin in a TV film named "Darwin's Daughter" and also surgeon James McIIroy in the TV film "Shackleton" about the 1914-1916 Trans Antarctic Expedition
2003 as a cardiologist in a film called "Where the Heart is" and had a role in episode "The Sewer King" from show "Seven Wonders of the Industrial World"
2004 (and 2008) he played single episode characters in British crime drama "Wire in the Blood" which is about a clinical psychologist who gets inside the heads of serial killers to track them down before they strike again.
2005 as Lucius Tillius Cimber (one of the assassins of Julius Caesar) in "Rome", and in the same year as former chief of MI6 John Scarlett in a TV film called "The Government Inspector". And also playwright Noël Coward in a TV drama called "Ian Flemming: Bondmaker"
2006 as Olympius, minister of the Western Roman Empire in "The Fall of Rome" episode of "Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire", and as Judge Mervyn Griffith-Jones in "The Chatterley Affair" a fictionalized version of the obscenity trial of D.H. Lawrence over a book called "Lady Chatterley's Lover".
2007 he played a character in two episodes of British police procedural cold-case unit show "Waking the Dead" in a 2-part episode in which a Nazi dagger found in a wall is traced to the murder of a young girl in 1945 which "reveals some of the horrors of WWII and the Nazi medical experiments"
2009 he had a role in "St Trinian's 2: the Legend of Fritton's Gold" (a British serial comedy that I once saw somebody speculate about regarding Millicent), and played as valet to Dorian Gray in the 2009 film "Dorian Gray" based on the Oscar Wilde story.
2010 and 2016 he had a role in British crime drama "Midsomer Murders" (although a lot of Elden Ring VA's have been on that one, and he was also in a couple of Dr. Who episodes but probably so have a lot of British actors)
2011 a role as an army Major in "War Horse" and a role as an army Major in a TV serial called "The Promise" directed by Peter Kosminsky (also directed "The Government Inspector") which is a period drama depicting the experience of the British soldiers who served in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 1948. Also in 2011 as British art historian, museum director and broadcaster Sir Kenneth Clark in a movie called "My Week with Marilyn" (biographical drama about Marilyn Monroe)
2012 as Thomas de Mowbray (son of Thomas de Mowbray) who raised a rebellion and subsequently was beheaded for his actions in Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 2 which was adapted in "The Hollow Crown". The wrong Thomas de Mowbray was linked on Wikipedia (the elder, who dueled Henry Bolingbroke and was exiled to Venice and died there in events covered in Richard II) but I fixed it because this is one of the few shows on here that I have seen before.
Also in 2012 as the chauffer in a film called "The Scapegoat" which has a pretty fantastic premise (a twist on a classic novel of the same name from 1957). A failed businessman meets his doppelgänger who is a recently-fired teacher, and essentially tricks the teacher into swapping identities. Turns out the doppelgänger actually does a pretty good job of turning around the fortunes of the glass factory, and getting along well with the businessman's estranged wife and daughter and other family members. When things start looking up the original tries to murder the teacher who he had tricked into swapping places but in the ensuing struggle he is killed instead. And then then the doppelgänger is convinced to stay by the caretaker of the original businessman's mother who had figured out he was a different person, so he's just like "I guess this is my life now!" and stays with this new family.
2013 as Reverend Kenneth Barnes in a TV mystery thriller called "The Lady Vanishes"
2015 in "The Heavy Water War" as Colonel John Skinner Wilson, who trained ten operatives to parachute into Norway, evade capture, scale an ice-bound cliff, and sabotage an apparatus in the Norsk Hydro plant that was producing heavy water (deuterium oxide) used in Nazi nuclear research
Also in 2015 in the role of a character named Lawrence in three episodes of "Up the Women" which was a sitcom about the Women's suffrage movement in 1910.
And in 2015 in the role of a Dr Hexler in "The Danish Girl", which was a movie that starred Eddie Redmayne in the role of transgender woman Lili Elbe. 2015 again for the role of a Colonel Kaplan, member of the First Order military in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".
In 2015-2017 as main cast member The Duke of Cassel in "Versailles", a historical drama set during the construction of Versailles during the reign of King Louis the XIV
In 2015-2019 in "Poldark" as Cary Warleggan - a banker and uncle to one of the focus characters in an adaptation of a historical drama novel series set in post-American Revolutionary War Britain
2016 as characters in adaptations of "War & Peace" and "Hetty Feather"
2016-2019 in "The Crown" as Sir Alan "Tommy" Lascelles who was Private Secretary to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II and Keeper of the Royal Archives from 1943 to 1953.
Characters in a thriller called "Deep State" in 2018-2019 and another thriller called "Roadkill" in 2020. Actually in a rare crossover of careers Pippa Bennett Warner also stars in "Roadkill".
And the last one that I want to note chronologically is "Des" in 2020 starring David Tennant as serial killer Dennis Nilsen, where Pip Torrens plays trial defence counsel Ivan Lawrence in one episode.

ASIA-AQ DC-8 aircraft flies over Bangkok, Thailand to monitor seasonal haze from fire smoke and urban pollution. Photo credit: Rafael Luis Méndez Peña. Tracking the spread of harmful air pollutants across large regions requires aircraft, satellites, and diverse team of scientists. NASA’s global interest in the threat of air pollution extends into Asia, where it works with partners on the Airborne and Satellite Investigation of Asian Air Quality (ASIA-AQ).  This international mission integrates satellite data and aircraft measurements with local air quality ground monitoring and modeling efforts across Asia. Orchestrating a mission of this scale requires complicated agreements between countries, the coordination of aircraft and scientific instrumentation, and the mobilization of scientists from across the globe. To make this possible, ARC’s Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) facilitated each phase of the campaign, from site preparation and aircraft deployment to sensitive data management and public outreach. “Successfully meeting the ASIA-AQ mission logistics requirements was an incredible effort in an uncertainty-filled environment and a very constrained schedule to execute and meet those requirements,” explains ASIA-AQ Project Manager Jhony Zavaleta. “Such effort drew on the years long experience on international shipping expertise, heavy equipment operations, networking and close coordination with international service providers and all of the U.S. embassies at each of our basing locations.” Map of planned ASIA-AQ operational regions. Yellow circles indicate the original areas of interest for flight sampling. The overlaid colormap shows annual average nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations observed by the TROPOMI satellite with red colors indicating the most polluted locations. Understanding Air Quality Globally ASIA-AQ benefits our understanding of air quality and the factors controlling its daily variability by investigating the ways that air quality can be observed and quantified. The airborne measurements collected during the campaign are directly integrated with existing satellite observations of air quality, local air quality monitoring networks, other available ground assets, and models to provide a level of detail otherwise unavailable to advance understanding of regional air quality and improve future integration of satellite and ground monitoring information. ESPO’s Mission-Critical Contributions Facilitating collaboration between governmental agencies and the academic community by executing project plans, navigating bureaucratic hurdles, and consensus building. Mission planning for two NASA aircraft. AFRC DC-8 completed 16 science flights, totaling 125 flight hours. The LaRC GIII completed 35 science flights, totaling 157.7 flight hours. Enabling international fieldwork and workforce mobilization by coordinating travel, securing authorizations and documentation, and maintaining relationships with local research partners. Managing outreach to local governments and schools. ASIA-AQ team members showcased tools used for air quality science to elementary/middle/high school students. Recent news feature here. Photo: Rafael Mendez Peña. The flying laboratory of NASA’s DC-8 NASA flew its DC-8 aircraft, picture above, equipped with instrumentation to monitor the quality, source, and movement of harmful air pollutants. Scientists onboard used the space as a laboratory to analyze data in real-time and share it with a network of researchers who aim to tackle this global issue. “Bringing the DC-8 flying laboratory and US researchers to Asian countries not only advances atmospheric research but also fosters international scientific collaboration and education,” said ESPO Project Specialist Vidal Salazar. “Running a campaign like ASIA AQ also opens doors for shared knowledge and exposes local communities to cutting-edge research.” Fostering Partnerships Through Expertise and Goodwill International collaboration fostered through this campaign contributes to an ongoing dialogue about air pollution between Asian countries. “NASA’s continued scientific and educational activities around the world are fundamental to building relationships with partnering countries,” said ESPO Director Marilyn Vasques. “NASA’s willingness to share data and provide educational opportunities to locals creates goodwill worldwide.” The role of ESPO in identifying, strategizing, and executing on project plans across the globe created a path for multi-sectoral community engagement on air quality. These global efforts to improve air quality science directly inform efforts to save lives from this hazard that affects all.

When computers wore skirts
So almost everyone's heard the amazing tid-bit of delicious history that the woman who programmed the Apollo something or other was also making a Jack Black.
And that it was a black woman who was so good at transcribing data that she used to correct the sloppy programming of NASA so accurately that Astronauts would double check with her before committing to action.
And that Admiral Grace hopper, age 56 was hammering out COBOL and putting moths into the logbook.
And you may even recall that Hedy Lamar showed up in the US and patented Radio Frequency hopping which is what Mobile phones use
Or that Pulsars were discovered, nay predicted then discovered by a woman who's name is sadly lost to time... ha ha, joking it was Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who is very much now credited with the work much to the annoyance of the guy who stole her work and got a Nobel.
But did you know it was a woman who invented the Dish-Washer because she wanted a way to wash plates that would protect them from being dropped? Say thanks to Josephine Garis Cochran should her spectral form float through your room tonight.
And should you want to read about young wizards facing off against evil, Oh boy, Diane Duane's like RIGHT BEHIND YOU!
Or maybe you'd like some Trek? Well Dorothy Catherine Fontana  wrote half your favourite TOS episodes as DC Fontana, so high five!
And any true Dr Who fan knows that Verity Lambert just pulled the entire franchise out of the vortex, despite the efforts of the men who hadn't the vision for it.
Anyway, what I'm saying is we live in a world that's made by women who did fantastic fabulous things and I'm truly grateful they did.

Scientists have mapped and identified the largest known deep-sea coral reef habitat in the world
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
A newly published study reveals the discovery of the world's largest known deep-sea coral reef habitat off the southeast coast of the United States, covering an area larger than Vermont, or 6.4 million acres.

The study, titled "Mapping and Geomorphic Characterization of the Vast Cold-Water Coral Mounds of the Blake Plateau," utilized bathymetric data from 31 multibeam sonar mapping surveys, led by NOAA Ocean Exploration.
The automated mapping system identified 83,908 individual coral mound peak features in the region, providing the first estimate of the total number of potential cold-water coral mounds. The coral province spans up to 500 kilometers long and 110 kilometers wide, with a core area of high-density mounds. The discovery, named "Million Mounds," is primarily composed of Desmophyllum pertusum, a stony coral, and provides valuable insights into coral populations and connectivity, aiding in the development of conservation plans for these poorly understood deep-sea ecosystems.

Header image: The majority of the deep-sea coral reef habitat on the Blake Plateau in the Atlantic Ocean consists of densely packed clusters of the reef-building coral Desmophyllum pertusum (formerly known as Lophelia pertusa). The healthy white coloring is notable, as deep-sea corals, lacking symbiotic algae dependence, do not undergo bleaching. These coral images were captured during a dive expedition off the coast of Florida in 2019. Credit: NOAA Ocean Exploration.

Note
I, T and X <333
Thanks for the ask bestie, this was very fun!!
I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why
BBC Sherlock. I really wanted to watch this show when it was all over tumblr and all my friends were watching it back in like 2014, but I never got around to it. Eventually, people stepped back and were like "actually, so much about this show sucks so much", and I was just kinda glad I'd never actually watched it yet and now I won't. If I want Sherlock content, tbh, I'll probably just rewatch "Elementary, Dear Data" from Star Trek: TNG. Or finally finish the Enola Holmes stuff.
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)
Duke Thomas cannot make direct eye contact with people. It gives him a splitting headache. Since eyes both absorb and reflect light, looking directly at someone's eyes creates a sort of feedback loop of light beams for him.
Cass is, in all actuality, older than Jason. However, because there is some ambiguity about her precise age, both of them frequently insist they are the older sibling of the two. They could very easily confirm who is older; they both refuse because they don't want to be wrong.
Steph is more of the common sense in the batfam than people give her credit for. Don't get me wrong, she is far from normal (she is vigilante, she grew up in Gotham), but she is the one with the wherewithal to, idk, solve her problems by actually talking to people. She's clever and witty and quick on her feet and actually some really good and really practical people skills.
Duke and Jason are both functionally immortal for different reasons. (Also, they are good brothers and DC needs to bring back the two of them getting to interact).
Tim doesn't call Bruce "dad" and probably never will. Not because he doesn't see Bruce as his parent, but because "dad" has some very complex connotations for him and he doesn't want to apply those to Bruce. More specifically, because good batdad is canon to me, Bruce is better than what "dad" means to him. (It’s also important to me that Jack does try to be a father to Tim and does love him. But loving your kid is not always enough. Sometimes you still hurt them).
There's definitely something I'm forgetting that I'm even more die hard about, but this is already more than I intended on writing for this one 😂 needless to say this is a fun question. (Also maybe putting this out will kickstart me writing the fics I have planned based on 3 of these)
X - top 5-10 characters who are yoUR PRECIOUS BABIES AND YOU WILL DIE DEFENDING THEM
Tried very hard not to just put every single batkid on this list but know that I would go to war for any of them I love them all so much.
In no particular order
1. Jason Todd -- listen, do I think his philosophy on crime should be applied to the real world? No, absolutely not. Has he done anything wrong ever? Also no.
2. Duke Thomas (bonus: the whole We Are Robin crew) -- if you hate Duke Thomas, meet me in Denny's parking lot. Something is clearly wrong with you and I will right it via blunt force trauma /j.
3. Tim Drake -- Catch me untangling the mess that is his fanon and canon characterizations and weaving a beautiful tapestry out of it. I see so many wrong interpretations about him and I am tired. Very carefully sorting out what should and shouldn't be kept from both fanon and canon every time I write him.
4. Cassandra Cain -- she has done nothing wrong ever and she deserves to be Batman. my favorite weirdgirl ever <3
5. Trevor Belmont -- my wife /p just introduced me to Castlevania and I did not expect to love it this much. Trevor is my babygirl and I would die for him.
6. Sypha -- I love her soooo much and I am dreading any potential romantic arcs to come about since she's the female lead because I really don't think she needs it. Please let her be cool af and single and not ruined in favor of the inevitable contrived romance, oh god.
7. Rise!Mikey -- I started my dive into tmnt content with Rise and then I tried to go back and watch 2012 because people said it was also good but they were so mean to Mikey 😭 I couldn't do it. He is like a squeaky toy to me.
8. Rise!Donnie -- I am captivated by his autism swag. Enough said. (Him and Mikey as a brother duo is so precious to me).
9. Razer -- Watch Green Lantern: The Animated Series if you haven't already. Do it. I promise you will not regret it. I won't say anything because spoilers but I have so much to say.
10. Talia al Ghul -- I am taking a knife to canon and carving out the parts I don't like because she is a good mom, goddammit!
Bonus: Koriand'r. I haven't read enough comics to know much about her, but I respect woman juice everyday for my favorite 6+ ft buff alien woman. (She should get to be huge and strong and I will fight for that).

Solar Panels 101: Your Guide to Renewable Energy Savings
Tumblr media
Tired of high electricity bills? Want to help the planet? Solar panels could be the answer. More folks are switching to solar, and it's easy to understand why. But before you jump in, understand the basics. This guide will get you started.
Understanding Solar Panel Basics
Solar panels, also called photovoltaics (PV), convert sunlight into electricity. It's like magic, but it's science! But how does it work? Let's break down the magic.
How Solar Panels Work: The Science of Photovoltaics
The photovoltaic effect is key. Sunlight is made of tiny particles called photons. These photons hit the solar panel. Solar panels contain silicon, a semiconductor material. When photons strike the silicon, they knock electrons loose. These electrons flow through an electrical circuit, creating electricity.
[Diagram or Illustration of the Photovoltaic Effect]
Types of Solar Panels: Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline, and Thin-Film
There are different solar panels. Monocrystalline panels are made from a single crystal of silicon. Polycrystalline panels are made from many silicon fragments. Thin-film panels use different materials applied to a surface.
Monocrystalline panels are generally the most efficient. They also tend to be the most expensive. Polycrystalline panels are less efficient but cheaper. Thin-film panels are the least efficient but also the most flexible. They can be a good choice for curved surfaces. Monocrystalline looks sleek and black. Polycrystalline has a blue, speckled appearance. Thin-film panels can vary in color and transparency.
Key Components of a Solar System: Beyond the Panels
Solar panels are not the only component. Inverters are also key. They convert the DC electricity from the panels to AC electricity, which powers your home. Racking systems mount the panels on your roof or the ground. Batteries store excess energy for later use, like at night.
Assessing Your Energy Needs and Solar Potential
How much energy do you use? Is your home a good spot for solar? Let's figure it out.
Calculating Your Energy Consumption: Understanding Your Bills
Your utility bill shows how much energy you use each month. Look for the "kWh" (kilowatt-hours) used. Add up your monthly usage for a year. Divide by 12 to get your average monthly consumption. Divide that by 30 (days) to find your average daily consumption.
Evaluating Your Roof: Orientation, Angle, and Shading
South-facing roofs are best. They get the most sunlight throughout the day. The tilt angle of your roof matters too. An angle equal to your latitude is often ideal. Shade from trees or buildings will hurt solar panel production.
Solar Potential Maps and Online Tools
Online tools can help you estimate solar potential. Google's Project Sunroof is one option. These tools use satellite data to assess your roof's sunlight exposure. They can estimate how much energy you could generate with solar panels.
Navigating Solar Panel Costs and Incentives
Solar panels can cost a lot. But incentives can lower the cost. Let's explore the money side.
Initial Investment: Panel Costs, Installation, and Permitting
A typical solar panel system can cost $15,000 to $25,000. Costs vary depending on panel quality, system size, and installation complexity. Roof complexity and accessibility can affect install costs. You'll also need permits, which add to the overall price.
Federal Tax Credits and State Incentives: Maximizing Your Savings
The federal solar tax credit (ITC) can save you money. It can cover 30% of the system's cost. Many states also offer rebates and incentives. Check your state's energy website for details.
Understanding Net Metering: Getting Credit for Excess Energy
Net metering allows you to get credit for excess energy. When your solar panels generate more electricity than you need, it gets sent back to the grid. Your utility company will credit your bill for this excess power.
Choosing the Right Solar Panels and Installer
Choosing the right Solar Panels and installer matters. Here's how to make smart choices.
Panel Efficiency and Warranty: What to Look For
Panel efficiency indicates how much sunlight a panel turns into electricity. Look for panels with high efficiency ratings. A strong warranty protects your investment. Pay attention to both product and performance warranties. Performance warranties guarantee a certain level of output over time.
Researching Solar Installers: Licensing, Reviews, and Experience
Check that your installer is licensed and insured. Read online reviews on sites like Yelp and Google. Ask for references from past customers. Experience matters. Look for installers with a proven track record.
Getting Multiple Quotes: Comparing Offers and Financing Options
Get quotes from at least three installers. Compare their prices, equipment, and warranties. Explore different financing options. Loans, leases, and power purchase agreements (PPAs) are common.
Maintaining Your Solar Panel System
Solar panels don't need much maintenance. But some upkeep helps. Let's learn how to keep them running well.
Cleaning and Inspections: Keeping Your Panels Performing Optimally
Clean your solar panels a couple times a year. Dust and dirt can reduce their output. You can clean them yourself with a hose and soft brush. Or hire a professional cleaning service. Visually inspect your panels regularly. Look for any damage or debris.
Monitoring System Performance: Identifying Potential Issues
Most solar systems have monitoring apps or websites. Use these to track your system's performance. If you notice a sudden drop in power production, it could indicate a problem.
Conclusion
Solar panels can save you money and help the environment. It's important to plan carefully and do your research. Take the next step toward solar energy. Consider contacting a local installer for a free quote.

Investing in Solar Energy for Your Cambridge Home
Cambridge Solar energy is a renewable resource that can be used to produce electricity. It can also be used to heat and cool buildings. Solar panels can be installed on the roofs of homes and businesses.
The City is partnering with Boston-based EnergySage to leverage their online marketplace to offer transparent competition among pre-selected installers for the City’s residents. The program is called Sunny Cambridge.
Solar Panels
Solar panels are a great option for homeowners looking to save money on their energy bills and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable world. It’s possible to recoup your installation costs in as few as 20 years with a 5 kW system, according to EnergySage.
MIT researchers have created an interactive tool to show Cambridge property owners how much electricity their roofs can generate via photovoltaic (PV) systems. The software can predict electricity yield to within 4-10 percent of actual measured results, and it takes into account variables such as roof size, type, and shading.
The following chart is a year-by-year breakdown of how energy is used, exported and imported with a solar PV system. The data was taken from a local install in a village north of Cambridge. The green line shows the amount of energy produced by the panels each day, with a peak around midday and then reducing as appliances are switched off at night.
Solar Panel Installation
Investing in a solar power system can save you money on electricity while supporting a sustainable future. Whether you're in an apartment, single-family home, or multifamily dwelling, there are many ways to go solar that suit your unique needs and goals.
During the day, sunlight hits your solar panels, which convert the energy into a direct current (DC) that powers your house. Any excess energy is sent to the grid, where it gets credited on your utility bill.
A 6 kW solar system costs about $17,220 in Cambridge before federal incentives. However, a 30% solar investment tax credit cuts that cost by thousands of dollars. Other state and local rebates can also lower your installation costs.
Solar Panel Costs
There are several factors that impact solar panel costs, including system size, roof type, and quality. Additionally, the cost of a battery can add up to your overall installation cost. But a battery allows you to store energy and use it at night, which can greatly decrease your electricity costs.
Typically, it takes 8 to 13 solar panels to cover a 2-3 bedroom home’s electricity needs in Cambridge. Once your system is installed, you can expect to save up to PS1,020 annually and benefit from the tax incentives available in Massachusetts.
The state offers various renewable energy incentives, including the 30% solar investment tax credit. This incentive reduces your cost per watt and is currently available through 2034. Also, the net metering policy offers credits to offset unused electricity from your solar system. These credits can be redeemed once your system has reached the break-even point.
Solar Panel Incentives
Taking advantage of local rebates and incentives will help you lower the cost of your solar panel system. Additionally, comparing multiple quotes will ensure that you are receiving the best price for your new system. Many companies also offer $0-down loans which can bring down the upfront costs even further.
Homeowners in Cambridge can recoup their investment in a 5 kW solar energy system within 6 to 7 years and save thousands on electricity bills. A solar installation can significantly increase the value of a home, and homeowners can take advantage of the property tax exemption to offset the initial cost.
Residents can start going solar by registering for Sunny Cambridge, an online platform that allows residents to receive comprehensive, unbiased information to make smarter decisions about their renewable energy options. The program, which is managed by Boston-based EnergySage, has already helped many Cambridge residents go solar. The platform leverages an online marketplace that provides transparency and competitive competition among highly qualified solar installers.
