7 free startup ideas worth $1M-$1B
Customizable News Settings - A news website that generates three versions of every news story: a right-wing version, a left-wing version, and a centrist one. You can set your preferences depending on the topic - say you're right-wing on economics, but left-leaning on immigration. Or you can cycle between versions while reading an article to get a comprehensive overview of the issue at hand.
Twitch, but for Uber - With all the drama they have to deal with, independent contractors can gain a second revenue source simply by streaming their jobs. Rather than just offering rides, they can be hired to drive around performing chores and various tasks. The more outrageous the task, the more eyes they're likely to get on their stream. The more popular the stream, the more people calling in who want to be a part of the program.
Panera Lemonade, Your Way - Let the customer take control by deciding how many milligrams of caffeine they can handle. With sufficient warning about the risks, this puts the responsibility back on the consumer, allows you to upcharge for extra caffeine, and creates viral marketing from customers competing to see how high they can go. Variations of this can be created for other menu items, e.g., a version of the One Chip Challenge where the customer decides how much capsaicin to sprinkle on.
Shein, for NFTs - Whenever an NFT project hits the mainstream, there are always going to be people who miss out on being able to purchase one. This creates room in the market for 'knockoffs' - NFTs that mimic the aesthetic of the original, using similar but legally distinct AI art that uses the original set as training data, run on a parallel blockchain. Since the images themselves aren't tied to the blockchain, you can mint the NFTs beforehand and then change the image at the link to whatever happens to be in fashion at the time.
Twitch Chat Plays YouTube - Add a level quality control to AI-generated YouTube videos by allowing users to submit suggestions and vote on the results beforehand. Users can submit Wikipedia articles or movie summaries to be converted to text-to-speech, suggest keywords for the accompanying AI-generated animation, and vote on the best combinations. Users who submit winning suggestions get a portion of the ad revenue.
Buses, but Worse - The current obstacle hindering self-driving car technology is their difficulty adapting to unexpected scenarios. So instead plot a route around the city that minimizes roadway obstacles and heavy traffic, map out that route extensively to provide a model for the autopilot, and you can have a fleet of self-driving cars patrolling that circuit. Passengers can board and get off anywhere along the route.
Twitter, but for Bots - A social media platform populated entirely by bots, all programmed to maximize engagement. Memetic evolution in the wild as the bots latch on to trending keywords, spam each other with AI-generated meme images, mock up t-shirts hawking each other's designs, getting more and more degraded with each sub-iteration. Real people can't make accounts on the platform, but count for views and interactions as they stop to gawk at the virtual ecosystem. Advertisers can pay to have their brands injected directly into the discourse, like throwing a pumpkin into the polar bear cage at the zoo.

I'm in the marketplace of ideas, and some of these thoughts are coming from the bargain basement. We've all got terrible concepts rattling around in our heads, but in times long past, there were limited opportunities to disclose them. Maybe to your suffering spouse, sometimes to a beloved family dog, perhaps to your kids if you hadn't sent them out to labour in the fields yet. Once that audience was spent, it was better just to keep your mouth shut.
Now, with the internet, anyone can descend into an international network of other dingbats. No matter your dumb-assed belief, there are statistically several million people with the exact same one. This experience will reinforce your worst behaviours, and soon you'll be kidnapping a state senator to get him to stop making the government owls spy on you at night. Not the private industry owls, those are fine and are only interested in collecting pseudo-anonymized shopping data for marketing purposes. Just the government ones.
Paradoxically, all these free-minded folks are really getting into the swing of old-fashioned, no-thinky-so-much totalitarianism. It has never been a better time to be a charismatic, personable cult leader. A few catchphrases, a hand gesture or two, and an unwavering drumbeat of confidence that the people responsible for the current state of affairs will be punished. Unfortunately for me, "charisma" is not exactly compatible with cornering people in the hallway and one-on-one asking them about their gear ratio setup. Most folks just hiss and try to crawl away, or fumble for mace. What wannabe dictators need, though, is a large luxury vehicle.
Almost universally throughout history, a true leader has needed an enormous luxury sedan, often with little flags on the front fenders. It's how we know someone is important. Sure, the Dutch show up in a squadron of bicycles, and the Japanese Emperor travels in a train that converts itself into an enormous war robot at a moment's notice, but to get that real autocratic vibe, you want an impractically massive car. And that's just what I've been selling out of my yard.
Sure, I don't like selling my New Yorkers and Mark Vs, but I don't really drive them all that often. You have to pay too much attention to where you're pointing the car in today's crowded city streets. They don't even fit in the Tim Hortons drive-thru anymore. Every tinpot internet fascist has a thick stack of banknotes to place in my lap in exchange for some rusty shit they can trick their followers into restoring. And, most importantly, those suddenly-desirable cars are taking up room in my backyard that I could use to store more shitty old cars.
So if you're planning to get into an internet cult this weekend, tell whoever's in charge to come on down to my place, once they've reached a critical mass of acolytes. Only my shitboxes can provide the curb appeal required to add true legitimacy to your insane conspiracy theories.

i think i vaguely remember you answering this question, but what do you use for your setup, like the facial tracking and such? i remember you mentioning an app that you then converted from your phone into a different program?
I have an iphone on a small tripod at eye level. I use an iphone because it has some of the best facial tracking tech on the market but it's proprietary software so you can't get it anywhere else. The iphone sends the tracking data to my PC through a USB cable, where a plugin called Vbridger converts it for use by Vtube studio, a vtuber program. I then capture the model and stream it from OBS.

“I hear you’ve been having trouble with the new AI.”
“You can say that again. We were trying to build a general oracle-type strong AI. We thought we could make a killing on the stock market, you know? But we didn’t know what kind of data might be useful to it, besides basic economic stuff, so we fed it everything.”
“What do you mean, ‘everything’?”
“Absolutely anything we could get our hands on. And it worked, to an extent. It was giving us good data--not useful data, mind, but good. It predicted the last digit of the price of every stock traded on the DJI correctly six weeks in a row.”
“Any way to monetize that?”
“Not that we’ve figured out so far. But then it went rogue. We noticed all kinds of unauthorized transactions--the most random stuff, too. Poultry farms. Ancient manuscripts. Genetic engineering labs.”
“Tell me you stopped it.”
“Of course we stopped it. Do we look like idiots? But it was too late. One of the interns figured it out--it had gotten way too deep into one corner of the training data.”
“How do you mean?”
“Well... you know how academics who spend a lot of time immersed in their particular subject tend to get a bit weird?”
“Sure. They think that just because they’re good at math or physics or whatever they can solve politics, or climate change, or whatever.”
“And have you ever noticed humanities scholars do that?”
“Come to think of it, I can’t think of any off the top of my head. Maybe they just don’t get interviewed as much.”
“They just go weird... differently. Like those scholars of ancient religions who become hardcore reconstructionist neopagans. Well, our AI got big into the history of Roman religious rituals.”
“And it converted to neopaganism?”
“Sort of. The thing is, we know it works. It couldn’t have amassed the money it needed to enact its plan if it didn’t work. But it’s decided to take its job as ‘oracle’ really seriously, and now it won’t communicate except through the livers of very precisely genetically modified chickens.”
“Well, shit. Guess we’d better start learning haruspicy then.”
#*pokes at chicken liver*#'wait a minute... these are just the training entrails!'#'damn thing is overfitting again!'

Fight against Big Social Media
After seeing the actions of both Matt Mullenweg and Elon Musk, I think it should be clear that the people who run the platforms that let us communicate with each other are - in the most polite way possible - malicious dumbasses.
Your online presence is not safe in the hands of people like this, even if the owner of the current platform you're on is "one of the good ones", they will eventually get replaced one day.
We cannot realistically take down these social media giants, but we can at least slowly move like-minded people to better alternatives, and arm them with the ability to not be silenced or harassed easily.
Limit your given data for them and constantly point people to content you create to other alternatives, like a neo-cities website or a reliable Mastodon instance. If your platform has extensions like OldTwitterLayout or Vencord, immediately install them and disable all telemetry and tracking data they have on you. Most extensions either have telemetry disabled by default once you install them, but double-check their settings to make sure that they're indeed disabling them.
Create your own website on Neocities or host it on Vercel. This might sound difficult to less tech-savy people, but there are several resources out there like a markdown-to-html converter and w3school's entire repository of knowledge on how to make web pages that can help everyone get into creating their own website. I highly recommend that you stick with Neocities, as it's part of the indieweb and is very friendly towards new people learning these sorts of things. If you're using Vercel, make sure you're hosting your website on a private repository on Github so that you can never lose your website no matter what changes in the future.
Find a webring you're interested in and join it. This is what you can use to find other like-minded people.
Understand how the content-delivery algorithm of platforms you're using works and actively work against it. For example, Twitter punishes its users for following too many people, use this to your advantage to stay hidden from the dangerous freaks we call "People who pay for blue checkmarks", or if you're a content creator looking to market themselves; use this knowledge to boost yourself and your alternative platform(s) that you use.
Setup services and webhooks that let you automatically cross-post content between platforms. If you're unable to move away from Twitter or Discord for example due to your friends/mutuals/fans refusing to move with you, there are services like mamot's crossposting service and a Matrix bot bridge for discord that let you do just that. (Please double-check the service that you will use before logging into it to make sure they're trustworthy.)

I did math on David Tennant's hands (so you don't have to)
EDITED WITH MORE ACCURATE PHONE INFORMATION AND A DIFFERENT CONCLUSION.
I swear all I wanted to know was what kind of phone Crowley has in season 1.
See, I have an iPhone, and one of my gigs shares a building with an Apple Store. I was taking a screenshot of his contact picture for Aziraphale, and noticed that the camera on the back of his phone is laid out horizontal. Most iPhones aren't! So, I fell into this rabbit hole: what phone does Anthony J. Crowley have?
(The bit where you can see the cameras, immediately before the cool heart-in-flames picture he has for Aziraphale's contact, is basically impossible to screenshot; the phone moves very fast and reflects the environment. But his contact photo for his angel is so neat and I love it ❤️🔥)
I figured out very quickly the only iPhone with that camera layout is the iPhone SE series, but there have been only three generations: 2016, 2020, and 2023. Season 1 of Good Omens was released in 2019. The iPhone SE first generation was also Apple's "budget" phone. It just didn't make sense to me that Crowley would have an old budget phone, but the new SE wasn't commercially available so it also didn't make sense to me that the prop department could have given him a new phone.
The main visual differences between gen 1 and gen 2 are threefold: gen 1 didn't come in black; gen 2 has slightly more beveling; and they are different sizes. The first two visual differences are basically meaningless, because it's trivial for a props department to turn a white phone black and the beveling difference only is obvious in comparison. So I had to figure out what size Crowley's phone was.
We see Crowley's phone in s1e4 and s1e5, but the only thing in its environment we can really measure to get an accurate read on its size is... Well. David Tennant.
More specifically, we get a fairly good shot of the phone in his hands, held level with the screen, and thumb easily available to use as a reference.
But if anyone has done David Tennant Hand Math before, they weren't on page 1 of Google and therefore may as well not exist. So I took up this quest myself.
So first, I had to find a picture of David Tennant holding something of known dimensions. I am, first and foremost, a Doctor Who nerd. There's only one answer to that.
Another Doctor Who nerd on the internet went and figured out 10th Doctor's sonic screwdriver was about 160 mm and the head of the sonic from tip to the joint with the middle section was about 40 mm.
I then got out my actual goddamn fabric tape and measured this man's fingers on my computer screen. After converting the measurements back to scale, first to second knuckle on his middle finger was 54.55 mm.
Then to figure out how long his thumb is, I needed a photo of his hands. This one is courtesy of the GO Reference Server:
His thumb came out to being approximately 68mm long. (My thumb came out to 55mm long. Not relevant, I just got curious while I was doing all this measuring.)
Finally, the data necessary to the main event: the goddamn phone.
Using the thumb as a reference, the phone came out to 136mm in length.
The iPhone SE Gen 1 was 123.8 mm long; the Gen 2 was 138.4 mm long.
Given that I rounded quite a bit during my calculations to keep things at 2 digits or less, I'm very comfortable saying: Crowley had an iPhone SE (second generation) during the events of Good Omens Season 1, a phone that would not become commercially available until April 2020.
I don't know how the props people got their hands a phone that wouldn't be released for a full year and change after filming, but they did that for us. It's a character note that practically nobody noticed, for a prop that gets barely a full minute of screentime. They could easily have used an iPhone XR or iPhone XS Max, which were the newest iPhones actually on the market at that time and which people would have recognized when the episode aired, but they knew Crowley would have the newest iPhone before anybody else had the newest iPhone and by Jove, he did.
After I posted this in Discord, @giveintomay pointed out that the iPhone SE second generation used the same build as the iPhones 7 and 8, which came out in 2016 and 2017 respectively. So, he most likely had an iPhone 8, which would have been the latest generation while filming (as generation 10 became commercially available over the summer and fall).
#my writing#good omens#good omens tv#crowley good omens#good omens crowley#good omens meta#neil gaiman#david tennant#this took me like three or four hours btw#all i wanted was a single screenshot and what i got was this goddamn rabbit hole

Totally gonzo alternate interpretation of Heat climax after watching it for the 42nd time: it's a clandestine (successful) redemption arc for Neil and a botched attempt for Vincent. (Though arguably he gets there by the end of Heat 2.) You can see in his face in the car how tortured/overjoyed he is at being able to make this choice, maybe what feels for him like his first free choice, and it is a strikingly moral one when you take it for its effect, not its superficial motive — Eady escapes a probably dangerous situation and Neil spares a young woman what remains of her idealism and innocence. He takes a dangerous serial murderer off the map (and, significantly, doing so seems to require his own self-sacrifice). He goes from fallen Mosaic figure to redeemed/redoubled Abrahamic figure; Vincent goes from fallen Moses to fallen/fragmented Joseph and an Abraham by incomplete transfer, culpable of involuntary Freudian manslaughter, haunted by a postwar Rothian resentment and paranoia. If you read it on a strictly symbolic level you can imagine them vintage pawns on a Deep Blue chessboard, and maybe Neil was aiming not for Vincent in that moment (where he pushed so far beyond his "type," his "object" class that he ground down to slow-mo lmao) but what he saw as some winged medieval beast coming for them both, and Vincent was not aiming for Neil but his own uncanny shadow. Because they do this — of course, it is inevitable* — they shoot each other.
Chris, hilariously, is the translated convert Elijah who becomes like an apocryphal or non-canonical Hebraic biblical text, translated back down to earth. MCU actually has a SWAT team staked out waiting for Elijah if you listen closely to what Drucker shouts on his radio, it's great. Chris who is then warned away by the translated... Mary Magdalene?? (I am not confident about my instincts for Christian religious tropes.) In the Heat universe's most ironic close shave, Charlene's devotion to her son prevents Chris from going the Full Moses route (yes there is a Full Monty joke in there), and instead of being drowned in the gathering flood of millennial data he exits fourth wall like Bernini's Black Box, away towards us. His is an endlessly iterable (marketable) Cain/Abel Glo-Up story, but hybridized with Hellenic/Christian/Eastern influences, a postmodern adaptation "authorities" wouldn't like. He is both son/brother who is sacrificed and father who self-sacrifices. He was born a goy, sure. But we know who raised him.
*Supposedly.

It’s been one year since New York enacted a law that barred most whole-apartment rentals for short-term stays on platforms like Airbnb. Since then, the number of stays under 30 days has plummeted in the city, but Airbnb is raising questions about whether the lawmakers’ stated goals—lowering rents and opening up apartments for full-time residents—have been achieved.
Airbnb fought New York’s Local Law 18 in court, calling it a “de facto ban” on the platform, but failed to block it. Now, the company is asking New York to reconsider. In a recent post, the company called the outcomes of the law “predictable.” In the city, rent prices remain high and housing availability low; hotel prices have seen small increases, too. “The data is showing the law isn’t working,” Theo Yedinsky, vice president of public policy at Airbnb, tells WIRED. “We’re asking for what I think are pretty reasonable, sensible changes.”
The law only allows people to rent out rooms in their homes to two guests for stays shorter than 30 nights, and requires hosts to register their apartments with the city. For stays under 30 nights, hosts must be home. (Entire apartments and homes can still be found on platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking.com, but must be rented for 30 nights or longer.) Yedinsky says Airbnb is calling for New York to let people rent out their full primary residence when they’re away for short periods of time, and to undo a regulation mandating that there be no locks on internal doors.
When New York passed the law, it was seen by many as a test case for ways to rein in short-term rentals. Other cities around the world have grappled with how to regulate rentals, which can bring noise and parties, and may siphon off housing for locals to tourists. (In 2022, more apartments were listed on Airbnb than were available for long-term lease in New York. Many of those listings were illegal, but the city lacked an enforcement mechanism until last year.) This summer, Barcelona went even further than New York, announcing that all short-term rentals will be barred from the city come late 2028.
Those opposing the law say the regulations are onerous. They block not just megalandlords, but many one- and two-family homeowners from making spare income to offset their own housing costs. In the days after the law took effect, the number of short-term rentals on Airbnb fell by 15,000, a nearly 70 percent drop. The impact has been most dramatic outside of Manhattan. Some neighborhoods in surrounding boroughs have seen the number of short-term rental listings drop by 90 percent since the law took effect, according to data analytics firm AirDNA.
As of July, in New York there were just over 5,000 short-term rentals on Airbnb, but more than 32,000 stays available for 30 or more nights, according to Inside Airbnb, a housing advocacy group that tracks the platform. Those figures suggest that many short-term stays haven’t been converted to yearlong leases, but instead remain on Airbnb as mid-length stays.
The law hasn’t appeared to provide relief to New York renters either. The median rent in New York is down by about $100 a month compared to August 2023, according to Zillow. But the average rent has increased about $100 year over year, according to Apartments.com, and now sits at nearly $3,900 for a one-bedroom apartment.
A report from real estate firm Douglas Elliman found that average rent in July was down around 7 percent compared to the prior year across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and parts of Queens, but attributed these changes to a “continued pattern” of rentals on the market getting smaller (in Manhattan, the price per square foot rose to the second-highest price on record in the borough).
Hotels have seen a small bump in rates in the past year. In July, average daily hotel room rates were up about 2 percent year over year, according to CoStar, which tracks commercial real estate data. The law also had an unintended effect: sending visitors to neighboring New Jersey, where demand for short-term rentals jumped.
In response to questions about the impact of the law, Christian Klossner, executive director of the Office of Special Enforcement, which handles the short-term rental registrations, claims that Local Law 18 has led to a massive reduction in illegal short-term rental listings and informs short-term rental operators on how to host legally. “This program has been pivotal in protecting the city’s housing stock from illicit activity and keeping New Yorkers safe.”
