My own little blurb about writing reader into Season 2 Episode 4 | The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Book Of Carol.
Gif from: theewalkindead on tumblr
!!! POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW !!!
“Go! Go!” You yell to Carol, waving her off, “I got these three!”
She nods, running off into the building. You let out a grunt as you kick the one walker back, stabbing the other with your knife.
The third comes up and you duck, spinning around to knock its leg out from under it, finish it off with your knife to its skull.
The third one falls to the ground, dead, and you take off running in the direction Carol ran.
“Hey, hey we gotta-“ you freeze in your tracks, seeing Daryl standing there was a shock. You almost felt like you were hallucinating, “W-wha-“
Daryl steps away from Carol and meets you halfway.
You fall into the embrace you never thought you’d feel again, but this moment right here, right now, is what made you happy as hell that you held onto that little sliver of hope.
“What are ya’doin’ here?” Daryl leans back, cupping your face with his hands as he sniffles, “Oh my god.” He pulls you back in, “Are y’good?”
He leans back out to examine the gash on your cheek but you swat his hands away, “I should be askin’ you that.” You reach up, running your thumb gently over his beat up face, “I knew you were still alive.”
“Yeah, yeah, m’still kickin’.” He shakes his head, quickly turning his attention to the gunshots growing closer, “C’mon.”
He looks back at Carol while giving your hand a squeeze, “We gotta move. Now.”

Actually, ‘people get upset’ because romantic potential between Carol & Daryl has long been used as a plot device, or a way to exploit and manipulate a portion of the audience, or in the case of The Book of Carol, as a complete marketing misdirection. You want a happy audience, pick a narrative direction and commit to it 100%. Carol & Daryl aren't wishy-washy characters so why should their relationship story be any different?

Daryl is weak.
Okay, bold headline. I’m a journalist I know how clickbait works. Jokes aside, hear me out.
A lot of fans say that Daryl acts totally out of character in the second season of his spin-off. Getting close to a woman that quickly. Kissing her. Not thinking about going home anymore or not fighting tooth and nail to get there anymore.
And while I very much agree and the Daryl from the Spin-Off doesn’t feel like the Daryl from the flagship show anymore, there’s a pattern I’ve noticed throughout the series.
The word Daryl gets described the most is probably “loyal”. But what if he’s not that “loyal” man, everyone makes him out to be?
Daryl’s not good alone. He needs people. He latches on to them. First it was Merle, his bad influence of a brother. Then it was Rick and the group. He needs a role model. Someone to follow.
what happens though if you take away his role model, is always the same thing. He falls into despair, latches onto someone else and forgets where he came from.
Remember the arc after the prison fell? He was stuck with Beth, thought the group is dead. But instead of making use of his tracking abilities, determination, pure willpower to prove himself wrong and see that most folks are still alive or just whatever to find out if the other’s are really dead, he succumbs to pessimism and suggests to Beth to just stay at the funeral home, doing nothing but playing house. He would’ve stayed there for much longer if Beth hadn’t gone kidnapped. Once Beth was gone, he stucked to the Claimers until Rick came along again…
Same thing with Leah. He believed his leader (Rick) to be dead, his guilt made him shy away from his family, he lived in the woods until Leah came along. It took him longer than with Beth to finally give in and decide to stay with Leah, but still - he isolated himself from the thoughts of his family and stayed with a woman - and yet again, he would have stayed there, away from his family, if Leah hadn’t left herself. He didn’t have a clue about what’s happening in Alexandria, with the Whisperers, with Rick’s kids and probably didn’t wanna know either.
Rinse and repeat we got Isabelle. In this case, it’s even worse because Daryl’s stuck in another country. But again he’s far away from his family, again there is a woman, again he’s latching onto her and yet again he is forgetting about his people back home to the point where he’s almost not considering to go back anymore at all.
Daryl always needs a circumstance, a death, a kidnapping, or a person (Carol?) to pull him back to reality and to remind him who he is and what he might’ve left behind.
It’s also highly ironic to me that the Villain of the season, that cult leader, describes what’s going on with Daryl in Episode 2x03 perfectly:
“Must be hard living without a semblance of faith. No organizing principle, nothing to cling to [….] a man alone it’s a sad state.”
Daryl always believes he is alone, that his group has given up on him. His low self-esteem and the thing’s he had to endure prevent him from seeing how loved he is. But he’s never been truly alone, after he found Rick’s group.
Having to fend for himself as a kid has left his mark on him, so he’s clinging onto people, desperate of not wanting to be alone.
Now that doesn’t go without saying that I don’t believe Daryl didn’t find something in France. He found what he wishes for - a family of his own and to not be the “lonely man” anymore. But it’s time to come back from Neverland, to achieve that dream.
With all of these things considered I start to believe the Daryl we all know and love is still there - he just needs to be reminded that he is loved, cared for and so, so missed.
Edit: Some more notes. That is just a poor explanation/interpretation of bad writing in the Spin-Off. When Daryl said he wasn’t sure of what he was looking for when he left the Commonwealth, that made it clear as day the writers absolutely intend to retcon this beloved character and all of his core characteristics to pretend Daryl’s this blank page, a character without history. But this doesn’t work and I hope they’ll notice it soon enough.

CAROL AND REMY - The Book of Carol (2.03)
Carol made a friend. Carol and Remy instantly connected cause they had something in common. both of them, separated from the person they love the most, trying to figure out a plan together on how to get to them.
i truly believe Remy was the only person Carol actually told the complete truth to. i believe she told him Daryl is so much more than a friend or family, he is everything, her soulmate, the one she just risked everything for. and that's why Remy refers to him as HER DARYL.
and when Remy betrays Carol, as much as it must hurt, she doesn't even blink cause she gets him, she understands him. Remy would lie, cheat, steal and kill for the safety and the opportunity of a few more moments with HIS Julien, and so would Carol for Daryl. and that's beautiful.
Remy, i love you!

ISTG the parallels and callbacks this season part 2 (part 1 here):
(Tiny spoiler for TBOC 2X6)
So, the context, without revealing too much of the plot, is that Fallou decides to stay back rather than continue through the Euro tunnel to the UK, because he has “a reason for staying now…”
…the reason in question being new-found love…
As they make their way through the tunnel, Daryl looks back to see them holding hands, much like we saw with Daryl and Beth in 4x13 Alone…
…when it was Daryl who had found a reason for staying…
I’m not crying, you’re crying…

My thoughts on The Book Of Carol Episode 1
-Spoiler-free edition-
I know that some information about what was discussed during the panel has already been posted online, but I personally will try my best to refrain from posting about it since that was what was requested before the episode showing, and the panel.
Setting the tone for the rest of season 2
Firstly, Episode 1 immediately starts the season with huge emotional implications, primarily focusing on Carol and her current mindset. I truly believe that if they keep at this pace, we will have Daryl and Carol on an even field within the spinoff by the end of season 2.
Over the seasons of the main show, we got the chance to see so many layers of Carol, but since the screen time on that show had to be shared with so many other characters, we never got to go as far into Carol's mindset as we wanted to. But after watching this episode, I now know beyond a doubt that Melissa has the talent and Carol has the depth to be a brilliant leading character. She can fill an entire episode with her storyline, and there would not be a dull moment; on the contrary, during the showing, I constantly had chills because of the absolute power of Melissa's performance.
Storyline split ratio
As Norman has already said, The Book Of Carol will not be an exact 50/50 split between Daryl and Carol. There will naturally be slightly more of a focus on Carol, which I found was already so evident in Episode 1. The heavier focus on Carol was done beautifully, and like I said earlier Melissa fulfilled the role of a leading character so perfectly that I couldn't help but be a little disappointed whenever I saw that a scene had changed away from her.
Carol's mindset
Carol's mindset and emotional state had me in a chokehold this episode; I don't think there was a single scene between Carol & Ash that didn't bring me to tears or leave me with chills. As Melissa mentioned in her behind-the-scenes interview for Daryl Dixon episode 6, Carol's journey is about her mindset and how she needs to know that her friend is okay.
This theme is already heavily touched on in episode one and delivered in a way that brought me to tears repeatedly. They utilised a few vital flashbacks and some moments where we find Carol alone, going through some powerful emotional moments that opened old wounds and addressed certain things that were never fully resolved on the main show.
One of the most heartbreaking moments we see of Carol alone revolves around a song that Carol sings along with (to herself); even though the song itself has very simple lyrics, I immediately thought that it fully explains why Carol is prepared to do anything to get Daryl back.
Even before watching the episode, we knew that Carol would do anything for the ones she loves, but this current situation with Daryl truly asks more from her than anything she has ever done before. Still, there is no hesitation within her about how many lines she is willing to cross to find him again.
In all this Carol also showed some immense growth, especially in how she handled guilt and loss compared to her actions and mindset in season 10.
Daryl's change
This is mentioned in the new season's synopsis, so I no longer classify it as a spoiler. The synopsis stated that "Daryl struggles with his decision to stay in France" which appeared to be very true to me in episode 1.
I saw a colder, more aggressive, and mentally exhausted side to Daryl, which is evident in how he handles all his conversations with people from the Nest and how there seems to always be an slight undertone of resentment in his words that he is trying to hide.
Additionally, while watching season 1 of Daryl Dixon, I noticed that the longer Daryl is away from Carol, the more he regresses into his trauma. It's like all progress is being lost, and he's slowly turning back to his old ways, not standing up for himself and hiding in Merl's shadow.
Additional quick takeaways:
Ash is an angel and must be protected
Genet looked scary and really creeped me out at one point, which was really thrilling and showed the possibility of a really interesting villain for the season 2 arc
It appears that (according to Norman) we'll be getting more screen time with some of the other characters, like Sylvie and Losang
Some of the nest members' scenes evoked a sense of impending doom and eerieness, which suggests that there may be more to the Nest than meets the eye, with perhaps something sinister hiding within it.
This episode had gorgeous cinematography, which I personally liked more than season 1's, and I found that it felt richer too.
Episode 1 of TBOC is now, by far, my favourite episode from any of the spinoffs. It shows that when a show about Daryl and Carol is true to its characters, it becomes a natural success and a beautiful piece of the story.
Melissa's voice and influence are clear in how Carol's story is told in this episode. And Melissa herself seemed very proud of the work that had been done for season 2.
Norman teased one of his favourite upcoming scenes, which is of Daryl and Carol bickering like an old married couple, and Melissa teased about her favourite location where they slept and woke up surrounded by horses (I'm just imagining Norman waking up and immediately being terrified)
Melissa was absolutely glowing in person and exceeded any and every expectation that I may have had of her
Conclusion and final thoughts
If episode one is a good example on which to base my opinion, then I'd say that season 2 looks very promising, with the very likely possibility of surpassing the main series in ranking as my favourite show.
It has planted seeds to potentially resolve many of Caryl/Daryl's storylines that were left unresolved in the main series, in a way that's true to who Carol and Daryl are and how even we, as viewers, envisioned it should be.
And in Melissa's words from the panel:
"12 years of The Walking Dead, there was a lot unsaid... we picked some of the core issues and built on that"
All I gotta say to wrap this up is get excited!! The future of Caryl is looking bright!
~~~~
I have also written a full spoiler version of my thoughts, which goes into a further in-depth analysis of specific moments and their significance. However, I will post that once season 2, episode 1, is officially released in September.
Do you know what it means to not believe in God? Everything is pointless, no great beyond to thank or pray to. You lose hope and you got nothing but your shaky legs to pull you up. Do you know what it means to lose everything you ever cared for? For most of your life it was just rusty metal parts and people who spoke of peace as if it was a dirty word. A caress that echoed like a slap, the sting of leather on your back.
And then there she is. On the other side of the Atlantic, saving you again and again and again as if you're worth it. You, who denounced her like Peter did to Christ not because you don't love her but because you always thought that a rotten thing like you was doomed to never hold something blooming like her.
You found something in France. Yes, you did; like a castaway on a deserted island. You thought you were born to follow and for the first time you got to lead; not pretending to be something. That you're not; a weapon and an open wound at the same time. You saw a boy who never knew of pain and thought that if you kept him pure then maybe a part of you would heal.
And still, you didn't believe in God.
It only took her again to raise your eyes and thank the invisible. You forget about the blood in your hands, the next battle, the ghosts in your head. She is the miracle, you would fall to your knees for. And she is there, not in a dream but in front of you. A body to hug, a hand to hold, a shirt to grab on to. Real. She is bones and blood and a pumping heart.
No, you never believed in God and you don't think you'll ever will; but if this life has taught you something, if you believe in one thing, then it's her. It's always going to be her.
Carol.
