Loki & The Siren; Chapter Thirteen
The sons of Odin don't know when to keep their mouths shut.
Fic Synopsis:
This is the story about how you met and fell in love with Loki, hundreds of years before the events in Avengers, while his family was visiting Alfheim, where you were a siren.
It is a companion piece to Lightning Over the Sea-Redux to give more insight into your past and relationship with Loki.

The heavy wooden doors groan as Thor pushes them open, the thrill of your recent encounter still coursing through his veins. A broad grin stretches across his face, eyes alight with an almost childlike joy.
As he approaches the Warriors Three's table, the sights and sounds of the bustling tavern envelop him. Flickering firelight casts dancing shadows along the rough-hewn walls. The scent of roasting meat and ale fills his nostrils, mingling with the clink of mugs and the din of patrons' chatter.
The familiar faces of his friends turn toward him, surprise quickly giving way to knowing looks and raised eyebrows.
"Thor, what has you in such a jolly mood?" Volstagg's voice rumbles across the hall, his eye glinting with mirth.
Thor's grin widens. "Ah, my friends, I have just had the most incredible time."
Fandral leans forward, eyebrows dancing suggestively. "And what kind of time might that be?"
A hearty chuckle bursts from Thor. "The kind that leaves a man feeling like a god. But that is all I shall say on the matter." He shoots them a conspiratorial wink.
An unspoken exchange passes between the warriors, laden with camaraderie and unvoiced tales. Their mugs clink together in a salute.
"To Thor and his mysterious conquest," Hogun says, a rare grin splitting his stoic features.
"To life and all its pleasures!" Thor joins the toast with gusto before downing his ale in one hearty swallow, washing away any lingering worry.
Sif strides into the room, her presence slicing through the revelry like a knife through silk. Her frown speaks volumes, prompting Thor to offer a greeting, but it falls flat as Sif directs her intense gaze towards Fandral.
Leaning in close, Sif whispers urgently, "Be cautious with Una. Loki's threats are not idle chatter if he finds out."
Fandral blinks rapidly, unable to contain his eagerness. "Wait, what did she do?"
Exasperation seeps into Sif's hushed tones. "Don't pretend you're unaware. Una confessed when I caught her sneaking into the gardens through the secret entrance."
Fandral presses on, scanning Sif's expression. "And did she specifically say she was with me? Or did she imply it to cover her tracks?"
After a momentary pause, Sif concedes reluctantly, "Perhaps you are right." She mutters about faeries' deceitful nature, taking deep swigs of ale.
Meanwhile, anxiety claws at Thor's insides as thoughts race faster than Sleipnir on open terrain. His hand reaches reflexively for another gulp of ale, but his subtlety doesn't escape Sif's observant gaze as she fixates upon something blue amongst his golden locks.
"What is that in your hair, Thor?" Suspicion laces each word.
His fingers encounter soft, damning petals as realization dawns brightly around him. "I-I don't know," he stammers, doing little to convince those who know him better than most. "It must have just fallen in there."
Sif's brow raises in suspicion. "What's going on, Thor?"

Fic & Author Recommendations Wrapped 2022
This is a first I am doing this but I felt that I want to share what I’ve been reading for the past couple of months.
Some authors you may already know and some, maybe not yet. But what they all have in common is that they make really amazing stories which I believe should be shared to everyone.
The categories will simply be separated by Dark and Non-Dark. I think it’s easier that way, but I will mention either way if they (the non-dark ones) are fluff, angst or simply smut.
Tumblr media
Dark
Unsolicited (Lloyd Hansen x Reader) by @darkficsyouneveraskedfor Summary: You run into a rude stranger at the mall, but this won’t be just another chance encounter.
All in the Family (Silverfox!Loki x Reader) by @darkficsyouneveraskedfor Summary: Your new boyfriend invites you to meet his parents for the holidays.
Wallflower (Silverfox!Thor x Reader) by @darkficsyouneveraskedfor Summary: Your mother meets a new man, but he doesn’t seem very interested in her.

The Fall of Aphrodite (ThorKi x Reader) by @cherienymphe Summary: You have the hearts of both of the princes, but nothing good lasts forever.
If I can’t have you (Andy Barber x Reader) by @cockslutpadalecki Summary: After your professor calls off your affair, you won’t take no for an answer. Andy loves you and you love him— you’re meant to be.
Fixer-Upper (Lumberjack!Steve x Reader) by @straywords Summary: You move to the countryside but life isn’t the cottage daydream you hoped for.
Tumblr media
Grey
Put You In Your Place (Stepdad!Andy Barber x Stepdaughter!Reader) by @cockslutpadalecki Summary: Andy is sick of his stepdaughter continuously stepping out of line, and when he catches her spiking the punch at Jacob’s sixteenth birthday party, he’s had enough. It’s time he teaches her a lesson.
Show Some Respect (James Conrad x OFC) by @ladycamillewrites Summary: Louise, the adventurous daughter of a Marine General was assigned Capt. Conrad’s expedition troop. Soon tempers clash and Conrad has to make his position clear.
Tumblr media
Non-Dark

heyy, how are you doing❔i hope everything is going well for you and that you are having a good day/evening 🤍
may i request romantic ror x reader in this comical yet cute scenario where bf is lying his head on his partner’s tummy to relax but the stomach just won’t shut up?? i once watched a video of a couple doing this and the bf complained with a “why is your stomach talking so much shit today?” which made me cackle 😭 i think it was adorable honestly. you can make it either a story or headcanons, whatever you would like❕
characters would be thor, hades and poseidon🤍
Hello anon!! Thank you for the request!! This is actually so cute and funny to think about🤭
ROR Men with darling's talkative belly
Thor, hades, Poseidon
Thor
Tumblr media
- he had just finished doing some stuff and running errands for himself around the place. That being- striking fear into those who walked passed him.
-ofc he needed a place to rest. And like any strong soldier/fighter, he chose eto rest at the best place. Your stomach.
- you didn't mind, as long as he was comfortable, things like these always came as a surprise for those who witness it, not really like they can say anything about it tho.
-all of a sudden, you hear him speak. "It's so talkative.."
- you laugh at his complaint, telling him "it's just In a good mood."
- he let out a hum, continuing to listen to whatever was going on inside of there, giving it a small kiss before closing his eyes and resting.
- he liked hearing you breathe, anything that had something to do with you was always his medicine. It healed him in a way, both spiritually and physically.
- like he could be bleeding out, but as long as you give him a kiss, he's all fine.
- going back to him resting on you, his arms tighten around you even more, but not in a way to hurt your fragile figure.
- you were probably gonna be stuck in that position for a while ..
Hades
Tumblr media
- hades had finished doing some work, regarding stuff from the underworld and letters from his dear brother zues about meetings that he needed to attend in Valhalla.
- he wanted to soothe his nerves, and what better way to do that when he can go visit you?
- you were the only thing he could look forward to in the boring and lonely place of the underworld. You were the light he seemed whenever he was consumed by darkness.
- He walked over to you, in the big bedroom, immediately cuddling into you after a long day of work. Just what he needed.
- he planted a kiss on your face before sinking into the soft mound of flesh. Staying quiet until...
"you have quite the talkative belly, dearest."
- he let out a chuckle when you responded with, "it's just very excited that you're here."
- "shall it be then."
- he loved listening to it, no complaints made unlike the other two if yk what I mean.
- maybe one day, you'll have an actual mini human inside your belly for him to listen to--
- okay let's not go that far. You guys still have so much time before that happens. But it WILL happen, once everything is prepared. And once you both are ready.
- he'd listen to your belly, and then go like-
"it has a point."
- as long as it's you, he won't mind. He loves you very much, and he will make sure eto keep it that way forever.
- he likes to put kisses on your belly, or rub circles on it, just for fun. The bond between you two— and the belly ig — was strong.
...
- he sighs softly, closing his eyes and sleeping. He knew he'd have such a good rest after this.
Poseidon
Tumblr media
- "why is your stomach talking so much shit today?"
- yeah straight to the point here we are. Bro has beef with your belly.
- it was so noisy and wouldn't stop yapping at all. Reminds him of two brothers of his...(Adamas and zues. if yk, you know.)
- and this man was not patient. He was not gonna take this level of disrespect from a mound of flesh. How dare it do such.
- call him dramatic, but he ain't taking it.
- I bet he'd randomly rant to it about his day, while your fingers softly caress his hair. Like didn't he just complain about it being noisy?
- I know dam well there would be moments where he'd randomly take pauses, letting the belly speak, before continuing to rant.
- he didn't like how it talked so much shit, for a belly, it really knew how to speak it's words, didn't it?
- you were his angel, but that thing was a demon. How dare it.
- you'd just giggle and listen to him. Him and that stomach of yours really had a telepathic connection, huh?
- he slowly dosed off to sleep, after his nightly session of ranting. Sleeping soundly, still laying on your stomach.

Dear, congrats again on this milestone! I’m sooo happy for you and hope to keep enjoying your amazing writing and talent in this place 💜
I want to make a request with a song, just if it inspires you, so no pressure (;
Brut Gold - Chapter 1 Loki & Lia
1K Celebration Masterlist | Brut Gold Masterlist | Complete Masterlist
Summary: Loki sees you dancing in his club and is immediately infatuated with you. Pairing: Mob!Loki x Female Reader/OFC Word Count: Over 3K Warnings: No Smut, angst, killing, language A/N: Part of my 1K follower celebration. I want to thank @coldnique for this request and for introducing me to this song. I love this song! It is now on heavy rotation in my playlist. And the following scenario is what I pictured when I first heard it. So I hope you like it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The haze of the club seeped through the walls and into the lungs of every guest attending that night. The air was heavy with deep breaths and sighs. The music was so loud and deep you only had yourself for company; because no one else could hear anything you could or would be saying.
The large hall was dark, with vintage speakeasy furnishings and two bars that boasted to have every drink imaginable. There were private booths in the back that were separated by curtains of red and chrome. Curls of smoke could be seen wafting out when the curtains were pushed back to reveal secrets and obscurities.
Beyond that were the private rooms of the owners where they conducted their daily business.
The Odinsons. They were brothers from an old family, with ties to the royal households of Norway dating back a long time. With money stretching even further back.
Back here, the curls of smoke were thicker with lace and the music was replaced by the screams of people whom the brothers had deemed worthy of their attention. Good…and bad.
Loki had just collected his dagger from the body slumped on the floor. His second-in-command, Fandral, quickly approached him and handed him a handkerchief to wipe his blade. Thank you, kommandør. Be a dear and dispose of the trash, will you?” Fandral nodded silently to Loki as Hogun leaped up to help him.
“Brother, if you keep killing them, we’ll never find anyone to distribute our product,” Thor said, with an amused grin. He sat with his legs crossed on the back couch, looking like a Pharoah presiding over his kingdom. His crisp white suit hung delicately along his muscular frame. Quite the opposite of Loki’s leaner figure clad in an all-black ensemble.
“Well, if we started recruiting more loyal soldater, I wouldn’t feel the need to kill them.” Loki retorted.
Just then, Lady Sif walks through the door with a tiresome expression on her face. “Another one, Loki? I just saw Fandral and Hogun carrying a black duffel bag to the back.” Loki could only shrug as he wiped his blade clean.
“There she is!” Thor yelled. “My wife. My heart.” He held out his arms for her to join him. Sif pulls out her dagger and places it against Thor’s throat.
“Did you have something to do with this?”
“Ooh. I love it when you’re feisty.” He says pushing the blade away from himself slowly. She swings it back his way, expecting an answer. “No, I did not.” He sighs.
Satisfied by his response, she stows her blade and sits on his lap. Loki watches as Thor nuzzles up to his advisor-turned-wife, rolling his eyes at the blatant expression of love between them.
Deep down he knew he was jealous. Not of Thor, but of the connection he has with the person he found to love. But Lady Sif had always been by their side. She grew up in this life. She knows the harsh truths about sacrifice and gains. She was their rådgiver, their adviser.
Loki wanted someone outside of the chaos. Someone who doesn’t know who he is and doesn’t expect anything out of him but love and affection. That was hard to find in the line of work he was in.
He finished cleaning his daggers when Fandral opens the door and whispers to Loki, “It’s done. Volstagg is driving it to the junkyard as we speak. The front of the house needs your presence though.”
“Thank the gods. If I must stand here another minute, I might witness the creation of my future niece or nephew.” Loki whispered back, making Fandral look at what was happening on the couch. He just rolled his eyes and followed Loki out of the room, leaving the two lovers alone.
Closer and closer, Loki struts to the front of the house. The music got louder. The air got thinner. And his heart raced faster in time with the beat of the music.
Loki stopped at the threshold of the large hallway, flanked by Fandral and Hogun on either side. Those closest to them stopped and stared. The three were a sight for sure. All three were dressed impeccably in black slacks and dark shirts. Loki looked the most devastating of all with his shirt sleeves still rolled up and his top buttons still loose from the ‘sentencing’ he carried out moments before.
He looked around the club and saw a large sea of people swaying and gyrating to the music. It was busier tonight than usual. The locals mixed in with the tourist crowd for the summer.
A twinkling flash of gold caught his attention in the middle of the room, and he spotted you dancing on the floor.
Everyone else stared at them. Knew of them. But you- you remained unaffected and joyous as you continued swaying your body to the deep bass of the music. Loki was mesmerized. He’d never seen you in his club before. The sway of your hips made the gold sequence of your skirt catch his eye and he couldn’t look away.
As soon as they sat down, they were bombarded with attention. Some were from lower soldaters, soldiers who wanted to be in the inner circle and paid their respects. While others were of a more sexual nature. Loki ignored them all and just watched you.
He watched as your hands ran through your hair, your body moving to the beat. Your head thrown back lost in the music. He wondered if that’s how you would look, lost in passion, in between him and his bed.
You came in with a bachelorette party. The women you were with all clamoring for attention from the other clubgoers, getting drinks and compliments. You shone brightly behind them, keeping a low profile, just dancing and being protective of your friends who would otherwise end the night with some predator. Loki saw that as a positive quality of yours. Protective, loyal, caring, and gorgeous. He could see all the stares of appreciation you got every time you passed by someone.
He scoffed at the laughable attempts that were directed your way. All of which you turned down. He continued to watch you dance with your friends from one of the private booths in the back. He instructed his bartender to give you and your friends top-shelf drinks and made sure that no one else bothered you for the rest of the night.
Never, had anyone affected him this way before. Just one look at you and he was stunned. He never put much stock in fate or destiny. He always relied on his judgment and instincts. So, this fleeting moment of obsession alarmed him. “Find out all you can about her, Fandral. And don’t alert my brother of your research.” Loki asked his kommandør. Fandral and Hogun looked at each other quickly and let a sly smile pass between them.
Loki would’ve caught their little interaction, had it not been for some ingrate that tried to get handsy with you. Loki growled his displeasure from his seat.  But you quickly slapped the cretin’s hands away and pushed him off. When the lowlife tried a second time, Hogun got up to take care of the situation. He’d seen the way Loki was all night. Loki hadn’t paid a single attention to what was happening in front of him. He was too preoccupied with you. Hogun knew that if things didn’t deescalate quickly, he’d have a whole other mess to clean up.
Loki placed his hand on Hogun’s shoulder, stopping the deadly assassin from continuing. Instead, Loki made his way to you as Hogun followed behind closely. “Thor won’t like this if you make a scene, Loki,” he whispered in his ear.
“Who said I was gonna make a scene?” Loki paused with a solemn face. Hogun huffed in response. “Take that scum to the back. Make sure he doesn’t have use of those hands for the foreseeable future.” Hogun knew better than to roll his eyes at him. He simply nodded and grabbed the offending fool off by his collar.
Everyone gave Loki a wide berth as he walked right up behind you. Up till now, he’d only been watching you. But there was something about that handsy boor that stroked his possessiveness towards you.
He started to sway in time with your body. His arms snaked around your hips, as his lips came dangerously close to your ear. You were about to turn and slap whoever decided to get frisky with you until you heard Loki’s velvet voice caressing your ear, “Dance with me.”
There was a deep command laced in his tone. You had never heard a voice sound so sensual. So confident. His touch was firm but reverent. As if he were the lead dancer instructing your body on how to move. Your body relaxed into his. A sly smile formed on your face as you felt his hands trace your curves.
Loki twirled you to face him. You first noticed his eyes. They were cunning and sharp. They were also the brightest green you had ever seen. His smile was what you liked the most. His thin lips gave way to a wide smirk that promised fun and excitement. You could feel his strong arms holding you close to his body as you both swayed slowly to the fast-paced music.
“I’ve been wondering when you would make your move,” you said to him.
“So, you’ve been watching me, have you? I’m flattered.” Loki purred with a guarded smile.
“It’s hard to miss someone whose got the attention of everyone in the room.” You continued as you swayed your hips.
“Likewise, my dear. I haven’t been able to take my eyes off of you.” He whispered in your ear. A blush formed on your cheek from his charm. “Have a drink with me.” His tone left no room for refusal. Loki kissed your hand as he leads you back to his private booth. Everyone you passed just stared at you with judgment or awe.
He signaled to his barkeep for a drink while he held the curtains open for you to slide in. Soon after, a scantily clad woman, wearing the tightest mini skirt you had ever seen, walks up with a tray. She holds out the bottle for Loki to approve and he nods his head without taking his eyes off you. The pop of the bottle startled you and made you jump closer to his embrace. She eyed you suspiciously as she poured a gold bottle of brut with a spade on the front label. His eyes viciously glinted as he felt your body press up against his.
He snaked his arm tighter around your shoulders, pulling you closer to him. “Have you ever had Armand de Brignac before?” he whispered in your ear.
“No. I can’t say I have,” you smiled as he reached for his glass, dismissing the bottle girl. Loki held it up to his lips and took a sip. His eyes noted how you looked down at his throat, watching him swallow the expensive champagne.
With closed lips, he leaned in close to you. He pressed his mouth to yours and puckered slightly opening your lips to the cool champagne in his mouth. You sucked on his kiss as the taste of the champagne coated it. It was tart with hints of fruits. The bubbles were still evident as they tickled in between your joined lips. You drank the rest of the champagne from his mouth. His hands held the back of your head steady, helping you drink from him. When you had finished, a trickle fell down your chin to your throat. He was quick to wipe it away with a hooked finger and brought it over to your mouth to lick off.
You played along with his game and wrapped your lips along the length of his finger, licking the drop of bubbly from the bend.
“Delicious, is it not?” his voice hitched.
“Yes,” you said breathlessly. “Very much so.” Your mind tried to catch up. Your body was thrumming with adrenaline and hot need. Your bodies were turned towards each other in the private booth as his hand continues to caress the hairs on the back of your head.
“Would you like another taste?” he offered, looking down at your lips. He grabbed the flute without waiting for your answer. As if he knew you would say yes. Hoped that you would say yes.
“Yes, please.” You whispered, making him smile. He brought his lips towards yours again and you happily drank his sweet champagne kisses. Your hands roamed his shirt, pulling on his shirt collar to move closer to you. When you had drank every last drop, you snaked your tongue in between his lips and tickled the roof of his mouth.
When you finished, you looked down at his throat again and your fingers traced the outlines of a snake tattoo on his neck. Loki rumbled at the feel of your fingers on him. “You dangerous creature. I don’t even know your name.” His breath smelled like the champagne, crisp apples, and fruit.
“My closest friends call me Lia,” you whispered as your fingers followed the tattoo down to his collarbone.
“My friends, if I had any, call me…” Loki started but he was soon interrupted by someone calling out your name.
“Lia!” Your cousin slid the curtains open, much to the protest of Hogun standing guard. She had on a tiara with a veil and a sash that said wifey around her shoulder. “Lia! There you are!” Rosaline glared at Loki and grabbed your hand. “We have to go. Other clubs to visit.” Rosaline gave Loki a tight smile as she pulled you out of the booth. She looks vaguely familiar, Loki thought, but couldn’t put his mind as to where he’s seen her before. The bachelorette get-up surely didn’t help his memory either.
“Ok. Ok. Hold on a second.” You told her as you scooted out of the booth. Loki held on to your other hand, not wanting to let go.
“Lia.” He called out. “Will I ever see you again?” he smiled as you got up from the booth.
“I…”
“My cousins just visiting for the wedding,” Roseline answered. You gave her an angry look for talking on your behalf. “Come on. Let’s go.” Rosaline dragged you quickly away from the private booths and back to the safety of the group of girls you came with.
“What’s the deal, Rose? I thought you wanted me to find someone tonight?”
“Yes! Someone. Just not that one.” She said as she grabbed her purse and coat. Everyone in your group was doing the same, getting ready to go to the next club.
“What do you mean?”
“Girl, do you know who that is? No, of course you don’t. Ugh. Sometimes, I hate daddy for sending you away. All these years without my bestie…”
“Rose! Who is he?” you interrupted her, as she wrapped you in your coat.
“That is none other than Loki Odinson. Part owner of this club. Along with his brother, Thor Odinson.”
“Odinson?”
“Yes! That Odinson! The same Odinson that’s rivals with the Barnes family. You know…my fiancé!” The realization made you look back to the booth you had just shared. Except this time, Loki wasn’t alone. He was accompanied by another man. Striking blue eyes and an imposing figure, clad in all white. Thor Odinson.
Tumblr media
“Brother, I leave you alone for a couple of minutes and you cause all kinds of mischief,” Thor laughed as he sat down in the booth. Thor watched you walk away, being towed by none other than Rosaline Strange. “If I ask you to stay away from her, would you listen?”
Loki ignored his question and watched as your cousin, undoubtedly, informed you of who he was. “I saw what Fandral was researching for you. Would you like to know who she is?” Thor dangled the information in front of Loki, baiting for any response.
“Her name is Juliette ‘Lia’ Banner. Daughter of Bruce and Donna Banner. Donna, her mother, is Strange’s younger sister. Her parents both died a long time ago in an accident. They weren’t ‘in the life’ and wanted to keep their daughter out of it as well. When they passed, Strange honored their wishes and sent Juliette away to boarding school and Uni abroad to keep her safe. Apparently, she just graduated and is in town for the nuptials of her cousin Rosaline and James Barnes.”
“Barnes?” Loki said alarmed.
“Of all the juicy details I said. That’s the one you pick up on?” Thor chuckled. “She’s got too many ties for us to unravel Loki. Leave her be.” Thor warned resolutely.
“I don’t know if I can, Thor.”
“What do you mean you don’t know if you can? You have to. Or else…”
“Or else, what? Thor? Cut me off like you did Hela?”
“DAMMIT LOKI! You knew that was her decision.” Thor slammed his fist on the table making everyone in the vicinity jump. “I can’t protect you if you go after this girl. It would be a war for sure with Barnes and we don’t need that right now.”
Loki sat there quietly; watching as your group prepares to leave. “I’ve never lied to you brother…” Loki started. Thor just raised his eyebrows in disbelief. “…Regarding matters of the business and family. I’m telling you right now, that I want her.”
“How do you even know she wants you back? You can have any goddam cunt in here tonight. Hel, this whole club wants to sleep with you. Take your pick. But not her Loki!”
“If she turns to look back…”
You walked towards the front entrance, the chill from the summer night was flowing through the doors making you hold on tighter to your coat. Your cousin and her friends all laugh and beckon you outside to join them. Each step you took forward felt heavy. You couldn’t help it. One last look.
Both men stared at you as you made your exit. Shivers ran down your spine as you replayed his last words to you, ‘Will I ever see you again?’
God, I sure hope so, you thought.

Tom Hiddleston x OFC Series rated: M Chapter warnings: Nudity and talk of Thor movie AN: Look, another angst free chapter!
Masterlist AO3 KoFi
~~~~~<3
Mia didn’t have time to mess with her makeup. It was mostly decent from work. Dusting powder over it to refresh and reset it, she called it good after cleaning up under her eyes. After half-assing brushing her hair, she twisted it up and clipped it.
Good enough.
Opening the door, she stepped into the living room. Her simple black heels dangled from her fingers as she rushed through the space, skirt of the dress grazing the back of her ankles with each step. She leaned against the couch and slipped her feet into it.
Sally looked between her mom and Tom. He was frozen in time, glass of water halfway to his lips and mouth hung open. The water was dangerously close to spilling from the glass but he didn’t care about that. The little girl wondered if he would notice if it did spill or even if it fell out of his hands like in a movie.
Tom looked at her mom the way that the princes looked at the princesses in movies. Sally didn’t really understand the complexities of relationships, she was old enough to know there were many things she did not know.
Sally did know that she hoped Tom would stay with her mom forever. If she was good, maybe Tom would stay. Maybe Tom and mom would get married. If she was lucky, maybe Tom and her mom would get married. Tom could be her new dad.
The glass slipped out of Tom’s fingers as Mia bent over her raised leg, securing the strap around her ankle. Tendrils of damp hair hung around her face and neck.
“Fuck.” The moment Tom was frozen in was shattered at the sound of the cup clattering to the counter.
Water spilled everywhere, splashing up onto his jacket and white shirt. It ran over the counter and a stream of water ran over the edge of the countertop. Splashing dribbles hit to floor.
“You good there, boy?” Gretchen called from where she sat on the couch, feeling very much forgotten about.
She could have been a piece of furniture, for all the people in the room had been aware of. Not that Gretchen faulted the fancy man. Mia did pretty up nice and oh boy, it was clear as day that he was smitten with her.
“Yeah. Uh, yeah- Cup just slipped out of my hand.” Tom grabbed a hand towel and quickly began mopping up the water.
“Mmhmm.” Gretchen drew her attention back to the braid she had in her hands currently, fingers moving with unworldly speed. “Thought maybe you fell in love but what do I know.”
Mia shot Gretchen a glare from where she sat, setting her foot on the ground. She wanted to challenge Gretchen with something but didn’t know what. Tom had just dropped his cup, that was all. There was nothing more to it.
There wasn’t anything she could say that wouldn’t give them away to Sally though. Plus the more people that believed their marriage was sound and based on more than just a whim, the better. Balancing the two polar opposite stories was enough to drive a woman mad.
“Did it break?” Mia asked Tom instead.
“Uh, Nope.” Tom answered too fast. “Ready to go?”
~~~~~<3
They couldn’t make their reservation. There wasn’t time for a proper sit down meal even from somewhere that would sit them quickly so fast food was on the docket. Vegas was about the only place Mia could think of where no one would bat much of a eye at someone wearing a dress like hers sitting outside of a In-n-Out burger across from a man in dark jeans and a leather jacket.
It was a bit too warm outside for a jacket, in her opinion. Tom was committed to the look though and who could fault him? It looked damned good on him.
It was a relaxed dinner while Tom kept close watch on the time, ensuring they didn’t spend any more time than could be spared before their movie was set to start.
 While they ate, they talked. It had taken time but Mia relaxed with him, sharing her thoughts and feelings with him easier. His eyes crinkled ever so slightly as he smiled. Red stubble framed his laugh.
He looked good like this, casual and at ease eating fast food.
~~~~~<3
Nerves hit her as Tom parked her car in the casino parking lot. It had surprised him that most of the Movie theaters were in casino resorts. Las Vegas was a strange place to anyone who hadn’t spent a lot of time there. It was no wonder why people struggled to remember that there was families living and raising their children there when community things like theaters only existed in resorts. The city felt more like an adult playground than a home to most who didn’t have to call it home.
She had hesitated to get out of the car. They didn’t have a lot of time until the movie was set to start and she knew she needed to get herself moving. It was just hard though.
Maybe everyone would be too drunk to recognize him? Not likely but it was worth trying to hope for it.
Tom opened her car door, startling her. She hadn’t noticed him get out of the driver’s seat or make his way around at all, too busy stuck in her own head.
Holding his hand out to her, he said “Come on.”
Standing and straightening her dress, she felt overdressed. She wished she could go back in time and pick out a more casual dress.
“Talk to me.” He kept his voice low, tucking her arm around his as he lead her toward the building.
“I’m over dressed. This dress is too much.”
“You’re beautiful,” Tom stopped, holding her out in front of him so he could take her in again before tucking her on his arm again. “You’re perfect.”
She snorted and Tom smiled to himself as she protested, “I am far from perfect.”
“All of us are,” He countered and she rolled her eyes at his words as he held the door open for her.
The lights in the theater lobby were bright. Mia hesitated to step forward into the light. It had felt safe, well safer, in the dim lights of the casino that felt like home. Tom looked down at her, eyes soft.
This was the part of his life that had ruined things last time. He had to believe that she could do this. He needed her to be able to do this.
“Hold your head up high,” je told her, squeezing her hand and holding her eyes with his. “Let’s get some popcorn and drinks.”
“Two for Thor.” Tom requested and waited. It didn’t take long before what Mia had been dreading happened.
“You’re-” Tom smiled sheepishly at flustered look the kid behind the counter gave them. “You’re Tom Hiddleston, aren’t you?”
He chuckled that rather unique laugh of his as he handed his card over to the young man working the counter. “I am.”
“Can I get a picture with you?” The kid was already grabbing his cell phone.
“Of course.” It was surreal to see Tom like this, to see him very much working in person.
She stepped back when his hand left hers. He took the young man’s phone in his hand and leaned back over the counter while the employee leaned forward. Tom snapped a few pictures while she kept herself off to the side before handing the phone back.
Tom wrapped his arm around her waist as he stepped back to her side. When the ticket clerk thanked him again, he waved.
“That was nice of you.” Mia spoke softly as he pulled her tighter to his side.
“It’s a part of the job.” Tom held her close. He could just see in the corner of his eye the young man taking a few pictures of them while they walked. That was a part of the job he didn’t like. His privacy was valuable and he was more than happy to take pictures with people. “I love it when I get to interact with fans.”
Mia couldn’t help but laugh. “That sounds so, so-”
“So what?” Tom couldn’t help laughing with her as they approached the counter.
“Like some cocky actor.”
“I’ll have you know, Mrs. Hiddleston, that I am a cocky actor.”
~~~~~<3
Tom was engrossed with watching her watch the movie. She wasn’t one for superhero movies, she had told him and yet she sat next to him almost totally absorbed by the film. Absently, she would grab some popcorn or sip at her soda.
She was beautiful, bathed in the light from the screen and he struggled to take his eyes from her. He didn’t particularly care about watching the movie. He had seen it before and watching it more than the first screening felt narcissistic so he watched her watch him.
The theater had been chilly, just as he had expected and it didn’t take long for him to see her rubbing her lace covered arms. There was hardly an attempt of denying the jacket when he offered.
Now it was draped over her arms, clearly too big for her and swallowing her. He watched as her as the camera focused on his character on the screen. Her eyes quickly welled with tears as Loki yelled his heartbreak at his father.
Never in his life had Tom been so invested in watching someone watch one of his films. Seeing how his character, the villain by all accounts, moved the woman he… he cared for deeply was fascinating.
This was the power of Loki, a budding character that had the potential to be so much more.
She was so absorbed in the film, both the story of Loki and the depth of his acting that she didn’t even feel his eyes on her. Her heart broke for Loki as he spiraled into what clearly was a mental breakdown.
The goals of the character at the start of the film was warped, changed and corrupted in his heartbreak and she could only watch. This was not the shallow plot and characterization she had gone into a superhero movie expecting.
Tom couldn’t take his eyes off her as the final battle came crashing to an end. He was beyond invested in how she would react to his final scene.
Her hand hovered, popcorn hanging from her fingers as Loki cried out for his father’s approval. The bravado and anger was stripped from the character on the screen and again, tears sparkled in her eyes.
She cared so deeply about the bad guy that she was near tears for his pain. Tom was extremely proud of his performance as Loki but this was a validation he didn’t know he wanted.
“Did he just?” She whispered, shocked as Loki let go of everything and fell away.
“Hmm?” Tom leaned toward her and planted a soft kiss on the side of her head, action on impulse and not even the slightest bit thought out.
“Did he just commit suicide?”
“An impulsive action fueled by grief and pain.” Tom was tickled by her reactions. This was what he lived for as an actor, the way his performances manipulated the emotions of the audience. It was an even more powerful boost to his ego to have the woman he… he cared for so moved by his work.
“Right in front of his family? How traumatic.”
~~~~~<3~~~~~<3~~~~~<3~~~~~<3
“Here,” He held the water out to her but she didn’t move. “Asleep already?”
Setting the glass on the tabletop, he stood there and admired her. Long legs were tucked up slightly toward her chest, highlighting the curve of her ass. Soft was the best way he could think of to describe her. She was nothing but soft sweeping curves.
Tom wanted to sleep. The alcohol weighed on his brain, lulling him. He needed to sleep. His limbs felt heavy and sluggish as he pulled the banket down on one side of the bed. It was a struggle, between the heavy limbs, fuzzy fingers and the hotel staff having tucked the bedding under the mattress but eventually he got it.
Lifting her from the bed, he smiled at the feeling of having her naked body in his arms. This was his first night as a husband. He had a wife to hold and damned if he didn’t enjoy it.
It took a few tries before he could tuck her feet under the bedding he hadn’t been able to free. Then he nestled her down on the mattress. She tucked her arms against her chest in her sleep and he admired the swell of her breasts and the dip of her waist.
He wanted her again. He wanted to burry himself deep in her. He longed to be surrounded by her again, seeking the pleasure only a woman could give him.
He also longed for sleep.
Even if she hadn’t fallen right to sleep, Tom suspected even if she was awake, his ability to perform a second round was significantly compromised at best. It was better to sleep. He could take her again in the morning.
She was his wife now. They could indulge in eachother as often as they wanted.
He didn’t want to give up the view of her naked body but he did, reluctantly. While he made his way around the bed, he stumbled over his heavy feet. Sleep was defiantly needed.
Tom grabbed the champagne bottle off the tabletop and took a long pull from it as he stood naked in the dim room. He did it, he thought. This was the beginning of his life as a married man.
He stumbled into the bed and wiggled his way under the blankets. The swimming in his head became much worse as soon as he laid down. It took everything in him to slap off the lamp. Tom turned into her and snaked his arm around her waist.
Holding her against his body, he was asleep nearly instantly, holding his most prized achievement in his arms.
characters: reader, thor odinson
a/n: thank you for this request!! i love thor sm omg <33 hopefully it's good-- i haven't done s/o headcanons in a while lol :D in general news, requests are still open, just send in an ask!
taglist: @nutellani @thecloudedmind
(fill out this form if you'd like to be on my taglist!!)
-----------------------✰----------------------
thor is the sweetest ever
and when i say ever i mean EVER
i’d say he would be the type to make you breakfast every morning
like very stereotypical movie rom-com romantic
he’s always really enthusiastic
thor is totally willing to try anything like any time you go on a date you do something different
once you went rock climbing
idk why that’s just what i thought of HAH
he didn’t really like it though because the rocks were all “too small and too slippery”
so he just sat on the side the rest of the time to cheer you on
OO AND ONCE YOU WENT BOWLING
and well…
thor doesn’t always know his own strength
so he chucks the ball super easily
and sometimes it’ll go in other people’s lanes
but usually they don’t mind because it’s a strike anyway
he also insists on playing with the bumpers up
i feel like he would bring you home anything that looks interesting
and he always wraps the things up in wrapping paper
and y’all
that man fr can wrap a gift
they always look immaculate
here’s how it goes
so you’ll come home and he’ll already be at the door
and he always has this little smile
this like mischievous yet pure smile
and a sparkle in his eye
when i say sparkle i mean like a sparkle fr he’s adorable
anyways he’ll always have his hands behind his back
and he’ll say
“ close your eyes and hold out your hands!! “
and you’ll just grin bc you know what’s coming ofc
but once you open it the thing could be anything from a cake to a lampshade
yes you read that right
a lampshade
he just thought it looked pretty !!!!!
and so it reminded him of you :)
awwwwwwwww
omg thor is a blanket hog
that’s just facts
like you’ll be on the couch watching something & you’ll feel the blanket start to move slightly
and then more
and then more
and you’ll say something
AND HE LITERALLY PRETENDS TO BE ASLEEP
so you just let him have it
he also calls you a lot
like a lot a lot
he leaves messages
just to tell you little things
“ hey, y/n!! look outside!! there’s a rainbow!! goodbye!!”
“ hello y/n. there’s a big threat to the universe right now so i will be home late for dinner. i am so sorry! goodbye!!”
“ y/n!!! it’s me, thor! i think we should consider getting a young dog. i believe it would be fun!! goodbye!!”
i also think he would discover emojis later than everyone else
and so he thinks they’re really cool
ummmm he also buys you a lot of matching stuff
like keychains & hats & shirts
it’s so cute
OH
i also think he likes to sing to you
guys ik it’s cheesy BUT
he actually has a really nice voice.
he really likes frank sinatra & ella fitzgerald & that era of music
but also the man can whip out some mean rihanna if he wants to!!
like i said before he’s just the sweetest
ok last thing
yk when it’s dark & you have clothes in the corner of your room and you think it’s a monster
he thinks that a lot
like he’ll just yell in the middle of the night
& he makes you investigate it LMAO
IDK HE’S JUST THE BEST
Loki & The Siren; Chapter Eleven
A meeting in the forest.
Fic Synopsis:
This is the story about how you met and fell in love with Loki, hundreds of years before the events in Avengers, while his family was visiting Alfheim, where you were a siren.
It is a companion piece to Lightning Over the Sea-Redux to give more insight into your past and relationship with Loki.
Tumblr media
The anticipation of your next meeting consumes you in the days that follow. Every time you pass Thor in the palace, your eyes meet, igniting the spark between you and fueling the fire of your desire. You can hardly focus on anything else, your thoughts constantly returning to him and the secret rendezvous you've planned.
You feel your heart race as you sneak out of the palace, the anticipation of the upcoming meeting coursing through your veins. The towering trees loom overhead, their branches intertwining to create a canopy that obscures the sky. The rustling leaves and the sound of your footsteps echo through the forest.
As you navigate the winding path, you can't help but wonder what awaits you. Your mind is filled with questions, hopes, and fears. The cool breeze against your skin is a welcome distraction, but it doesn't ease the knot in your stomach. You push forward, driven by the desire to see him again.
Finally, you arrive at the clearing where you had arranged to meet. Your heart is pounding in your chest as you scan the area, searching for any sign of him. The silence is deafening, and every second feels like an eternity. Then, you hear the rustling of leaves behind you, and you turn around to see him emerging from the shadows.
His eyes meet yours, and for a moment, time stands still. The tension between you is electric. You're not sure who moves first, but soon you're standing face-to-face, his warm breath brushing against your skin, the heat emanating from him enveloping you in a cocoon of desire.
Without saying a word, you reach out and take his hand, intertwining your fingers. The touch sends shivers down your spine, and you're acutely aware of every inch of your body. You lean in closer, drawn to him like a moth to a flame. The air crackles with anticipation as you stand there, lost in each other's eyes.
Despite the passion that burns between you, there's an undercurrent of uncertainty and fear. You know that this meeting could have consequences, but you find yourself surrendering to the moment nonetheless. As you stand there, locked in each other's gaze, you realize that this is just the beginning of a journey that promises to be filled with love, lust, and danger. It is intoxicating.
⊱ ─ ༓ ── ⋅•⋅⊰ ─  ⋅ ∙ ∘ ☽ ༓ ☾ ∘ ∙ ⋅  ─ ⊱⋅•⋅ ── ༓ ─ ⊰
For nearly every living thing, choice breeds shame, and uncertainty, and regret.
Loki had stopped counting after a thousand days.
A thousand days of darkness, and of silence. Without hearing his own voice, or gazing upon the sunlight, or any type of sustenance. It was lonely to be sure, and some might consider it an unreasonable torture, but Loki didn’t. In fact, he preferred it this way.
Because it was also another kind of milestone - a thousand days without any mistakes. Without betraying or being betrayed, without killing or contributing to the evils in the universe. It was his longest streak ever, but Loki couldn’t give himself too much credit for that; it’s quite difficult to make new mistakes when you’re too busy lamenting on your old ones.
And he had a lot of mistakes to think about.
By now, Loki had memorized the patterns of cracks in the stone walls, winding and splitting their way around the room, much like the cracks in himself. The stone offered no comfort, and neither did the iron bars that made up the only door to the cell. And with no windows to speak of, and the only light coming from poorly lit lanterns in the dungeon hallway, he had become good friends with the darkness.
The walls were broken and imperfect, but still doing their duty. Still confining him, still keeping everyone safe from him. And he was doing his part too - suffering, with nothing but the cries of anguish from the other prisoners to keep him company.
Loki’s muscles, curving and molding unwillingly against the rough stone floor, cried out in agony as he lay on his side. His cell was bleak and unforgiving and exactly what he deserved. But was it really his if whomever was running this place didn’t know he was there?
The guards hadn’t abducted him, like they did the other prisoners, and there were plenty of shadows to hide in. And with no one crying out for help or mercy or salvation, there was no reason for anyone to look inside to see him.
Lately, the prisoner population had started to dwindle - the guards were killing without replacing for some reason. The screams were starting to fade, and with no new stock brought in to replace them, Loki was growing accustomed to the ambient sounds of the dungeon.
Water seeped through the fractures in the stone and condensed along the iron bars of the door. And every falling drop punctuated another memory of another failure as it landed on the hard, cold floor. Jotunnheim. Thanos. Tesseract.
As soon as Loki had stepped through the Time Door, he could smell the snow and ice outside, in spite of the rust and decay inside. For a while he was afraid he’d somehow arrived on Jotunnheim, before he had unleashed the full power of the Bifrost on his ancestral home. Before he discovered what he truly was. Before he ruined everything.
Thor. Frigga. The Dark Elves.
But once Loki finally saw the guards running the dungeon - each one a different species he couldn’t place - he breathed a heavy sigh of relief. He wasn’t anywhere he’d ever heard of before, and it was likely that no one there had ever heard of him either. Thankfully the TemPad didn’t seem to possess the same kind of irony that everything else did.
He used to watch the guards from the shadows, as they dragged screaming and struggling prisoners to their cells and subsequently away again. Loki didn’t know who they were or what they wanted, and he couldn’t bring himself to care. There was nothing he could do to help; in fact, he’d probably just make it worse.
Asgard. Odin. Tesseract.
Occasionally he caught himself wondering if Heimdall, or anyone else back home, could see him now. He didn’t know where or when he was, and it was possible Asgard had already been destroyed during Ragnarok. It was just as possible that everyone he’d ever known simply didn’t exist yet. The TemPad he had stolen was surely dead by now, so there was no way for him to check the sequence he had typed in at random before coming here - and that had been the point.
TVA. He Who Remains. Tesseract.
It somehow always came back to the Tesseract, didn’t it? The most cursed object in the Nine Realms, but no better than a paperweight inside the Time Variance Authority. It had yanked him to and fro, from captor to abuser and back again, uncaring and inconsiderate as it helped them chip away at his own autonomy.
If only he had known the horrors the Tesseract would lead to. If only he’d been in a place where he felt strong and secure about himself before ever coming into contact with it, then a Space Stone wouldn’t have been necessary in the first place. But at least now he could take solace in the fact that he’d never have to see or hear about it ever again.
No one would ever know he was here. The stone and iron were keeping him safe from harm and absolved of choice, but even now, Loki considered his needs secondary to the bigger picture. The dungeon was the only way to stop him from causing more destruction and chaos and death. It was the only way to stop caring.
In fact, Loki cared so little that he was still wearing the TVA uniform. It was conspicuous, but as long as he stayed in the shadows, what would be the point of using magic to change his clothes? When the clothes could serve a larger purpose - a reminder of how much he’d failed.
A thousand days inside that button-up shirt, the frayed tie, the torn pants - each one stained with sweat and grime and blood. And who knew what condition his hair was in; it had definitely grown in his isolation, down past the grooves of his hollowed out collarbones. And then one day it just…stopped growing. A side-effect of the starvation, he supposed.
Another side-effect was the absence of his magic - he couldn’t feel it in his bones, or his heart, or his mind anymore. It had been a precious gift bestowed upon him by his mother, and now it was gone. But he wasn’t worthy of it anyway, and its departure just served as another impediment should he ever get the insane notion to attempt escape.
Logically, he knew there was no good reason to try running again; all that waited for him on the outside was more disappointment and failure. Everything he’d ever done, for better and for worse, had been the very definition of futile, and this was surely better than the alternative.
The one creature comfort Loki allowed himself was a cloak that must have belonged to a previous occupant of the cell, left behind somehow as they were dragged away to their doom. The cloak was as dark as night, and heavy enough to drown out the noises of tortured souls screaming in the distance. It smelled of decay, and the hems were torn and frayed, and it was exactly what he deserved.
He had pulled it over his head, and bunched it up between his neck and the stone into a makeshift pillow. Laying on his side, facing the rear wall of the cell, Loki had settled in for a long nap, and tried not to think about the kind of cruel end that must have come for its previous owner.
Loki hadn’t moved since then - curled up into himself, unable to differentiate between the nightmares and reality. Content to wither away in solitary confinement, where no one would ever know how he met his end.
He was used to being alone, but the isolation he experienced before had always been in spite of himself. He never meant to push people away, but it somehow became a habit, and then a necessity. The only difference between then and now was that he didn’t have to concern himself over what happened to anyone else anymore.
Except that obviously wasn’t true. There was still plenty to worry about, and Loki tried so hard to convince himself that he didn’t care anymore. Thanos, He Who Remains, the TVA - there were just too many dangers on the board, and they all led back to him.
In one way or another, Loki - or another version of him - was the only common element, the single being that every evil loved to curl its heinous claws around. He was the perfect instrument for malice - inherently broken, crushed at just the right pressure, burned at just the right temperature, and malleable enough to be used for nothing good.
So it was better for all if he stayed there, hidden in that dungeon on a mysterious planet, where not even he could fall prey to the illusion of choice anymore. Loki believed this arrangement was beneficial to everyone - there was nothing here for him to ruin, there were no wrong decisions to make, and nothing real was ever at stake.
There was no reason to charm, manipulate, or lie; no one to hurt, no one to lose, and no one to disappoint. And for the most part, Loki was finally at peace.
But occasionally, during the deepest and most frightening times of introspection, Loki would feel himself starting to yearn for something more. And unfortunately, the loneliest parts of his soul could never settle on a single need.
Sometimes it was companionship - the touch of anyone that had seen the worst parts of him, and still moved closer anyway. Other times, it was just a place to belong - where no one whispered behind his back, or criticized him right to his face.
And for the most part, he longed for the opportunity to just be. To just exist as himself.
But who was he? If he stripped himself down, if he somehow shed the veils of glorious purposes that were decided for him by his previous owners, then what was left of him?
Clinging to the notion of a throne was a lie. It was a facile explanation for his actions, because it was easier to hide under the guise of vanity rather than admit he didn’t know who he was. That he didn’t have anyone in his corner. That he couldn’t come to terms with being unable to figure himself out.
And if he couldn’t do that back on Asgard, as a Prince with everything going his way and cushioned with every advantage of being the son of the Throne, then all hope for him was lost. Which was exactly why he had let go of Odin’s spear in the first place - a decision that ultimately led to all of this.
It seemed like only yesterday he was hanging off the Bifrost with his older brother. Suspended over a wormhole caused by the Bifrost’s destruction, watching in quiet resignation as his father awoke from sleep to save his favorite heir from certain death, and shattering as Odin rejected Loki for the last time. At the time, falling into a wormhole was preferable than trying to come back from that.
So much had happened since then - none of it good, and all of it Loki’s fault. He didn’t swing the hammer, but he did set those events in motion while suffering the ill effects of wanting, needing, and longing. And even though no reasonable person could have expected anyone to shake off that same look of disappointment - so visceral and palpable - on their own father’s face, Loki still believed he was to blame for it all.
He often wondered, when he was too exhausted to push it back down, how Odin’s expression that night would compare to the one he’d have now. Loki was pathetic and broken, a complete and total failure, and drowning in loneliness on the floor of a cold and dirty dungeon cell.
This was certainly no place fit for a Prince, or a King; and yet even still, maybe Odin might be proud of him for finally making the right decision. Because while a Prince or a King may not belong there - the God of Mischief certainly did. It was a fitting end for him, because there was no way he was ever going to find anything good in that dungeon, and there was no way he was ever going to leave it either.
A familiar and long-forgotten sound drifted over Loki’s eardrums, rousing him from his self-loathing - laborious footsteps shuffling against the stone, metallic keys clinking together, and a surely unconscious body dragging across the floor.
It had been ages since he heard those noises. His eyelids drifted open and blinked once, twice, three times, as he waited for his pupils to dilate. And as the dungeon guards unlocked the door to his cell, the hair on the back of his neck stood on end.
Norns, no. Please, not another one…
Loki’s heart sank as the door swung open, creaking and groaning before crashing against the metal bars on the other side of itself. It echoed wildly throughout the chamber, and he remained frozen and unmoving as the guards dragged the stranger inside.
“Unwrap these chains. Quickly,” the higher-ranking guard ordered, his voice blunt and disdainful as he shuffled around the room. “When was the last time you rüzdæts cleaned out these cells?!”
Loki’s jaw set in place as he lay still, buried and hidden under the cloak in the shadows, even as the guard moved closer. What would he do if they discovered him now? Would he fight back, or would he just allow them to torture him too? Loki didn’t want to have to think about it.
“Are you sure we’re supposed to bring her in here?” The second guard’s voice was much more timid and unsure of himself, like it was his very first day working in a torture dungeon.
“For the last time, Orfeo - yes, this is where she’s supposed to be! Now hurry up!”
Loki could sense the guard’s trepidation even as he unshackled the newest prisoner. He’d never heard any of the guards questioning themselves before, and it was oddly unsettling.“I don’t know, this feels like…kánslha. We shouldn’t be doing this…”
The first guard, the one more sure of himself, continued snapping at the other. Telling him to just do as he was instructed, asking him if he still believed in their cause. Reminding him of what would happen should he suddenly have a change of heart.
Loki had never asked for much - just to be left alone. But it had never been given to him freely; he had to take it instead, and apparently he wasn’t allowed to even hold on to it for very long. He could feel the adrenaline start to rise in his body - his hands clenching, his muscles starting to come back to life.
There was no telling why she was supposed to be in that specific cell, or what their “cause” actually was. Loki had never paid any attention to them before; but now his curiosity was piqued, and he absolutely hated it.
Silence was worth fighting for, wasn’t it? Even if fighting meant revealing his very presence? But once he did that, once he crossed that line, he wouldn’t be able to stop until every single one of them was dead…
No. Stop. This is still suffering. Let it go…
As Loki attempted to calm himself back down, the guards finally took their leave, bickering and arguing as they relocked the door and their footsteps faded away. Silence descended upon him again, and Loki held his breath as he tried to listen for any signs of life coming from his new cell mate.
Her own breath was light, faint, fleeting. Loki almost felt sorry for her, much to his own chagrin. He didn’t want to care, because caring led to compassion, and empathy, and trust, and every other good feeling that inevitably led to more pain.
And maybe she deserved to be there, or maybe she didn’t. Loki couldn’t let that be his problem; not when he had enough of his own.
Even so, Loki was curious to see her - the one somehow important enough to make a guard question himself. To make Loki question himself - to make him consider disclosing his presence, even if it was just to kill every guard in that place in the name of silence.
Slowly and quietly, Loki tried to push himself upright. But his muscles, stiff and hardened from such little use, refused to cooperate. It was a struggle to move without grunting, and thus revealing, that someone else was still alive in that cell.
Finally, he managed to roll himself onto his back, landing against the floor with a groan. Loki had forgotten about the harness still strapped to his back, and his muscles screamed as they stretched around the stiff leather underneath him. He froze, biting his tongue as he waited to see if there would be a reaction from her. And when none came, he slowly turned his head to look.
A woman laid unconscious across from him on the floor. Twisted on her side, her face dirty and blood, her long and crimson hair woven into a tangled braid. Like Loki, she wore a dark cloak, and like Loki, she looked broken.
And despite the dried blood and the bruises starting to form on her skin already, she was beautiful. Even Loki couldn’t deny that. But was that enough to explain why the guards were behaving so strangely about her? No, there had to be more to it than that.
She resembled the mortals on Midgard, more so than the guards did, but that didn’t necessarily mean that she was human, or that Loki had been on Midgard all along. It didn’t mean anything; it just created more questions. The intricacies of traveling through both time and space were already complicated enough, and then adding in the context of his destination being a mystery even to himself…
Just as he realized how far his mind had wandered, her fingers twitched, and his eyes snapped back into focus. The woman was starting to wake up, and he was staring right at her - exposed, and vulnerable, and wondering.
She let out a soft groan, and Loki quickly turned back onto his side, facing the rear wall again as he silently cursed to himself. None of his questions would matter in the end; even if she woke up, she was already dead.
Loki swore he wasn’t going to get involved with anyone else ever again. He was already committed to doing nothing, especially for strangers.
And he had spent the last thousand days doing nothing. How hard could another three or four be?
Chapter 5
The excitement was thick in the air as Melody and Bobbi rode the elevator up to the party deck of the Avengers Tower.  Bobbi looked gorgeous in a black lace cocktail dress and knee-high boots with the buckles she’d picked up from the thrift store.  Melody wore a dark blue satin jumpsuit with slits up the legs that had black a lace strip both at the slits and along the armholes.  She’d paired it with a pair of sandals and her favorite jewelry and she was feeling good about herself.
It was both thrilling and nerve-wracking thinking she would see not just Steve Rogers, but all the Avengers in party mode.  What eclipsed all of those feelings was her excitement and nerves about getting to socialize with Steve outside of the confines of interviewing him.
The elevator doors slid open to a room that resembled a cross between a bar and a nightclub.  The doors opened into a large open area with a bar to the left and a pool table to the right.  There were angular gray couches set up in squares up the floor and a set of stairs that led up to the huge windows that looked out over the city.  More couches were set up at the raised platform.  There were three more sections above with a floating staircase on each side leading to the balconies.  Each staircase ran beside a sloped window that let her see the room beyond, most of which looked down at workshops and hangers for the jets.  Below her feet were rugs sitting on thick glass or black marble tiles that ran in patterns.  Through the glass, she could see the Quinjets and rows of Iron Legion.  There were people everywhere, most of whom she didn’t recognize, but she did spot Natasha Romanoff and Tony Stark at the bar and Thor was up on the raised platform holding the attention of a whole group of people.
“Oh my god,” Bobbi exclaimed as she walked into the room.  “This is unreal!  I'm in a room with an actual god!”
Melody scanned the room looking for Steve, but he spotted her first and waved to her from the other side of the room.
“If you want some time alone with the good captain, just give me a signal.  I don’t know, tug on your earring or something,” Bobbi said, as the two women approached him.
 “I’m not going to abandon you in a party where you don’t know anyone,” Melody argued, nudging her.
“Don’t you worry about me,” Bobbi assured her.  “I make friends everywhere I go.”
Melody wanted to argue with her more, but she had already reached Steve.  He was standing with two easily recognizable people.  On his left was Sam Wilson, dressed in black jeans and a black jacket of a deep red button-up shirt, and on his right was James Barnes dressed from the neck down in black.
Steve kissed her cheek in greeting.  “You made it.”
“Are you kidding?” she said.  “How could I miss a genuine Tony Stark party?”
Steve chuckled.  “I’d give anything to be allowed to miss one,” he joked.  “These are my friends, Sam and Bucky,” he added, gesturing to his friends.  “Sam, Bucky, this is Melody the woman from the DB that’s been interviewing me.”
“It’s a real pleasure to meet you,” she said, shaking their hands and gesturing to Bobbi.  “This is my cousin, Bobbi.  We live together on the Upper West Side.”
“And what do you do, Bobbi?” Sam asked.
“I’m an actor.  And I also bartend on the side,” she answered.
“Would you have been in anything I might have seen?” Sam asked.
“That depends,” Bobbi answered.  “Have you ever been to the Vampire Dinner Theatre in the East Village?”
“I haven't,” Sam said.  “But maybe I should.”
“It's a lot of fun,” Bobbi said.  “Come sometime.”
Sam laughed and nodded.  “So, can we get you ladies a drink?”
They followed the men down to the bar where Tony Stark was making drinks and Natasha Romanoff sat on a bar stool with her legs crossed beside a dark-haired woman in a black pantsuit.  She looked stunning in a slinky black dress with a shrug over her shoulders that looked like she’d draped herself in a spider web, while Tony wore a black three-piece suit with a red tie.  He’d taken the jacket off and it was hanging at the end of the bar.  Tony’s sleeves were rolled up as he shook a drink in a shaker.
“Cap! Is this the journalist?” Tony said, sidling up toward Melody.
“It is,” Steve said.  “Melody, this is Tony.”
Tony leaned over toward Melody.  “Well, if you want the dirt, let me know.  I have loads of stories.”
“No, forget him, if you want stories, I’m your guy,” Sam argued.
Bucky just cleared his throat and looked at both men with his eyebrows raised.
Steve held up his hands. “Hey now, no one needs a source close to Captain Rogers' claim by line.  Dial it back.”
“Mmm… We’ll see,” Tony said and poured an almost ink-black cocktail into a martini glass.  He grabbed a cocktail pick and speared two blackberries and a raspberry onto it in sequence and dropped it into the glass before sliding it over to Natasha.
“So what can I make you ladies?” Tony asked.
“What was that one?” Melody asked, gesturing to Natasha’s drink.
“It’s something I made up.  I call it the Black Widow Martini.  Mostly vodka with a little Chambord and Blue Curaçao,” Tony explained.
“That sounds good,” Melody said.  “I’ll have that.”
“And you?” Tony asked Bobbi as he began to mix the new drink.
“Me?” Bobbi said, her eyes locked onto Natasha as Natasha took a sip of her drink. “I’d like a red Russian.”
Natasha stifled her laughter.  “Well, aren't I popular tonight?”
“Like you don’t know,” the woman next to her teased.
The drink Tony made was a little sweet, a little tart, and very, very strong.  Melody wasn’t sure if it would be better to nurse it and keep her wits about her, or to drink it quickly to let down her barriers.
When Bobbi had hers, Sam put his hand on her back. “How about a game of pool?  We can get our asses handed to us by Clint.”
“Yeah, that’s a great idea,” Bobbi said, giving Melody a very over-the-top and significant look as she let Sam and Bucky lead her away.  The fact that Steve’s friends were trying to leave Melody alone with Steve was both a little exciting and a lot terrifying.
She turned to look at Steve.  A pink flush had colored the back of his neck and he scratched his fingers through his hair.  “I might have been talking about you a lot,” he admitted.
“Me?” she said.  “Really?”
“Yes, you,” Steve chuckled.  “I’ve really been enjoying the time we spend together.  I know you’re just trying to put me at ease so I open up more, but I can usually tell when someone is trying to manipulate me.”
His admission made her heart flutter and her stomach flip.  It was exciting and scary and amazing.  The feeling was mutual, though she didn’t know what that meant right now.  The ethics about dating someone she was writing an article about were hazy at best and while she didn’t think she’d get fired for it, there was the possibility it could happen.  “I’m not trying to manipulate you,” she assured him.  “I mean, yeah, I want you to open up for the article, but I do actually like you.  And it’s not exactly a hard-hitting piece I’m doing.”
“Well, I am glad I wasn’t wrong about that at least,” Steve said.
“Unless I’m manipulating you right now?” she teased and took a sip of her drink.
He laughed. “God, don’t make me doubt myself more than I already am.”  He shook his head and offered her his arm.  “How about I show you around a little?”
“Sounds good,” she agreed and hooked her arm around his elbow.
He led her up the stairs to the second floor.  “This room is such a strange shape because the hanger for the jets, and Tony’s Iron Legion are kept below it.  As are parts of Tony’s labs.  He’s staggered this space above it to give it more room but make this space more interesting than just a large mostly empty room.  “If you look over this side you can see all the past iterations of his suits on display.”
Melody looked down into the space below to row after row of Iron Man armor that seemed to just go down forever.  As impressive as it was, she was still distracted by Steve’s admission and whether there was something that could be done about it.
“He has a lot of suits,” she said.
“You should see his closet,” Steve replied.  It made her snort and the journalist in her wanted to get to the bottom of that little statement.  She looked up at him and he returned her gaze with a soft smile.
“Hey, are you okay?” Steve asked.
“It’s just that I do really like you too,” she said.  “I went shopping today with my cousin to try and buy the perfect outfit because I wanted you to see me as a person you could be attracted to and not just the person asking hundreds of super personal questions.”
Steve reached out and took her hand, with a huge grin on his face.  “Well you didn’t need to dress up to do that,” he said.  “Though you do look stunning.”
“Thank you.  We got the jumpsuit at a thrift store and spent the afternoon tailoring it in and adding the lace,” she said.
“Wow,” Steve said, clearly impressed.  “That was a lot of effort.”  He lifted her hand above her head, and she did a spin for him.  “Are you sure tailoring isn’t your calling?”
She laughed.  “It’s Bobbi more than me.  She’s so tall and she has such distinctive taste that she got really good at thrifting and tailoring.  But then when we moved to New York and started living paycheck to paycheck we started thrifting together and she helped me hone my skills.”
“That’s impressive.  I haven’t sewn anything in a long time, but back in the day Bucky and I would at the very least patch our clothes.  Sometimes we’d make things from scratch.  We had so little money when we lived together I slept on the floor of his bedroom,” Steve shared.
She made another mental note for her column.  “I’m practically doing that now.  We have a one-bedroom place.  Bobbi has the bedroom and I have this little sectioned-off area in the living room.”
“Well here I was thinking that I wouldn’t meet anyone with a shared life experience,” Steve said.
“Plus an artist and a writer,” she added.
He chuckled.  “Exactly.  It’s like it’s meant to be.”
She sighed and shook her head, moving her hand to his chest.  “I want this,” she said.  “I do.  But - this is my big break.  I need to make sure I don’t do anything to fuck this up.  And this could be a conflict of interest.”  She hated herself a little for saying the words but she knew they needed to be said.
Steve frowned and bowed his head.  “Right.  Yeah.  You’re right.”
“But,” she continued.  “What if we put a pin in it until after it’s published?  If you still like me after you see what I’ve written about you.  We’ll go out.”
Steve smiled and nodded, squeezing her hand.  “It’s a deal,” he agreed.  He looked out at the party below and his stance changed.  He stood straighter and with his chest out.  It was like he’d decided not to dwell on it.  “How about we go join our friends for pool?”
She nodded and wrapped her arm around his again.  “Thanks, Steve,” she said.
He smiled at her with real affection and for a brief moment, she completely lost herself in the soft blue of his eyes.  She steeled herself.  Article first.  Then, if he let her, she’d willingly let herself fall for Steve Rogers.
New York
The shrill shriek of her ringtone ripped through Claire’s silent bedroom. Groaning, Claire rolled over and buried her head under the pillows. She was supposed to be off today. Whoever was calling could fuck off. If she was going to be forcibly out of the field, she was going to milk it. She ignored the sound, determined to remain in her dark, warm nest as long as she damn well pleased.
The phone stopped ringing and Claire breathed easily, her scrunched features relaxing as she started to drift back to sleep. She turned to her other side, settling into the valley between her pillows and beginning to sleepily plan her lazy day. She’d treat herself to breakfast at her favorite diner, take a walk in Central Park, and inevitably end up at the bookstore. Later she’d pick up ingredients for dinner from the nearby corner store and get wine drunk while she watched Bob’s Burgers and then fall asleep reading her new book.
The ringtone shrieked again, the vibration now rattling the headboard. Claire growled again, grunting when the phone’s vibration caused it to fall off the headboard and hit her directly in the face.
Not even bothering to open her eyes, Claire reached up from beneath the blankets to answer the incessant ringtone. It took a few tries to grab her phone, as it got lost in the shuffle of blankets as if to taunt her, but Claire finally managed to answer the call with a grumbled ‘hello?’
“We need you to come in.” Phil said without preamble. There was only one reason he’d be calling her.
“Now?” Claire sighed, already annoyed she was still dealing with this. She’d thought she’d sent the Asgardian emissary packing at field day. She clearly wasn’t princess material and in her mind, Njord must have gone scurrying back to Odin to report all the ways she sucked. ‘She’s a beast, my lord.’ The Njord in her head cried pathetically. ‘She used foul language! She dared to say marriage is stupid!’ “It’s not even 7 am.”
“The emissary called another meeting and you need to be here. Please Claire; this is really important and I want you to have a say in this.”
“’This’ meaning that stupid arranged marriage bullshit? I’m pretty sure I already told you no.”
“Claire, please,” Phil sighed. “Odin is insisting on moving forward with the marriage. You’re the only option we have and the emissary wants to sit down with you to discuss the treaty in depth.”
“…what?” Claire wasn’t sure how to process that. “He rejected everyone?”
“Apparently he was impressed by your performance at field day, although he did say you were rude,” Claire snickered as she recalled the shocked look on the man’s face when she’d told him ‘abso-fuckin-lutely not’ when he’d asked her to meet with him. “He also mentioned that whoever we send will be marrying Thor.” Phil added.
“Oh hell no!” Claire yelled, shooting up into a sitting position. “No way; I will NOT marry Thor! God that’s gross on so many-”
“If you don’t like it, then get down here and say something! The emissary looks like he’s fifteen for God’s sake; yell at him enough and he’ll cave.”
“And then Fury will yell at me for making a child cry! Remember, I had to go to that stupid seminar last time?” Claire huffed angrily. “This is why I said no; I don’t have the patience for this crap.”
“You honestly don’t care that we’re discussing your future?” Phil asked.
“Bold of you to assume I can’t just disappear if I want to.” Claire replied dryly.
“Just get here. NOW.” Phil hung up, leaving Claire in the silence of her apartment.
~~~~
Claire arrived at Avengers tower in what seemed like the foulest mood of her life. Nerves were stewing in her belly, and she managed to propel herself forward by listing everything she currently hated. Stupid Fury. Stupid Odin. Stupid THOR- what self-respecting god of thunder let himself be pushed into a marriage? Her toe caught a chip in the sidewalk, tripping her up and making her scowl deepen. Stupid sidewalk. Stupid Uncle Phil for even getting her into this mess.
The receptionist greeted her from behind her little fortress as Claire made her way to the elevator and sighed as the doors slid closed.
“Mornin’ Claire,” Clint greeted her warmly as he dropped in from the ceiling. “How are you feeling today?”
“Hi Clint,” Claire said. “I have a meeting with Fury and some Asgardian dickwad to discuss-” she cringed. “Marriage. How do you think I’m feeling?”
“Yeah I heard.” Clint nodded, commiserating with her silently.
“Doing much eavesdropping lately?” Claire asked flatly. Clint shrugged. Claire figured the Avengers were privy to just about anything. “Why are you here anyway? Were you elevator surfing or something?”
“Nah. Saw you come in, thought I’d say hi.”
“Is this normal for you?” Claire asked as the elevator reached Fury’s level. “Y’know what; tell me later. I have to go make sure no one is pledging my immortal soul to Cthulhu or something equally archaic.”
“I’ve heard the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a forgiving master; in case you need a suggestion.” Clint offered. Claire snorted a laugh.
“Thanks Clint.”
“Anytime.” Claire stepped out of the elevator, turning back when she heard a clang. She saw the toe of Clint’s boot disappearing up into the ceiling of the elevator and rolled her eyes. Clint was nuts. The elevator doors closed and she started walking toward Fury’s office.
“Don’t tell me you started the meeting without me!” Claire called when Fury came into her line of vision. He was outside his office talking with her uncle, and both turned to greet her.
“We’ve been stalling,” Phil said to her relief. “Our friend is losing patience, so we should get to it.”
“Thank you for coming. I don’t want you to feel left out of this decision.” Fury offered her a tight grin.
“That’s why you already invited the guy, right Nick?”
“Odin sent him; I can’t just send him back without talking to him. You know the protocol, Agent.” Fury said sternly.
“Doesn’t mean I have to like it,” Claire snapped. “It’s 2017 and you two idiots thought it would be okay to make this decision for me.”
“Nothing is set in stone,” Fury replied calmly. “We only pitched our agents as options because Odin refused to allow Doctor Foster to take part in the alliance. We didn’t make him pick you.”
“Doesn’t matter! I never said a fucking word about being interested in this archaic bullshit and yet it’s now become a problem I have to deal with. I don’t get paid enough for this-”
“Okay, that’s enough,” Phil cut in. “We’re not going to talk about it anymore. You’re here; that means you go into that room with us and help us work out a deal that makes you happy,” At Claire’s droll look he frowned. “Happier than you are at the moment,” He hedged. “At least hear what he has to say.”
“Fine.” Claire grumped, following sulkily when Fury and Phil led her to the meeting room. Maria Hill sat inside at the long conference table, along with Thor and a young man wearing leather armor and a pouty look on his face.
“Gentlemen, thank you for waiting,” Fury said as they entered and took seats. Fury sat at the head of the table, and Claire sat next to Phil, opposite Thor and Pouty-Face. “This is Claire, one of my agents here at S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Ah yes! She has agreed?” Pouty-Face asked doubtfully.
“I’m actually here to discuss some concerns with this treaty,” Claire replied diplomatically, trying to make a somewhat good impression. Pouty-Face made a motion for her to continue. For looking so young, he was perfectly coiffed and composed, looking down his nose at her. “I would like to read the proposal before we go any further please.”
“You are not aware of the offer?” Njord asked. “Perhaps you should have met with me when I asked.”
“I’m a firm believer in reading the fine print,” Claire said as Maria slid her a copy of the current proposal.“
“My king extends a most generous offer. Whomever we select will be given Idunn’s apples to extend their life span, receive a lavish lifestyle with anything and everything you could desire, servants, wealth…”
“Babies,” Claire stabbed a finger at a blurb of text. “Whoever goes would be required to have babies?”
“Children are an expected outcome of any union, Lady Claire.” Claire felt dread settle in her stomach like a stone. How in the hell would she navigate that? She’d never given any thought to having rugrats, and now the choice was being made for her? Fuck that.
“Okay, you know what? Shame on all of you. You and you-” she pointed at Njord and Thor in turn. “I can almost give a pass for this. You come from a different culture where women don’t seem to have much choice. But here we do. So the rest of you assholes who decided MY reproductive future can get fucked.”
“Agent-”
“Fuck you, Nick! Forget about me- any woman should have the right to make this decision. What if I couldn’t have kids? What if I didn’t want them; too bad?”
“Are you unable to bear children?” Njord asked. “If you are that would disqualify you from participating.”
“I don’t know, I’ve never tried,” Claire scoffed. “I have a dangerous job. I’ve made every effort not to get knocked up.”
“We would need assurance that you are capable of producing children.” Njord said haughtily.
“Okay first of all, I have other things to offer besides my eggs-”
“Without children, the alliance would break down within a generation,” Njord argued. “This is not only for your people’s current population, but the population going forward. This is a great honor!”
“This is fucking dumb, is what it is. Seriously, arranged marriage is how we agree not to kill each other-”
“If you wish to mock our traditions, you may leave.”
“Why, so you can con some girl off the street into this?” Claire scoffed. “Oh wait, I forgot- you already rejected all the other options!”
“Why don’t all take some time to cool off and come back?” Fury suggested, cutting Claire off before she could dig herself a deeper hole.
“Indeed.” Njord said curtly. Claire shoved away from the table, breaking out into the hallway with an angry growl.
“So obviously that could have gone better-”
“Did you know whoever they picked was gonna have to have babies?” Claire rounded on Phil.
“Not fully-”
“But you had a better idea than I did! Are you kidding me with this shit?” Claire hissed. “It’s 2017, Phil, how in the fuck would you think it’s okay to force a woman to have babies!?”
“It’s shitty, I know,” Phil held up his hands in defense. “This is their culture you’re stepping into. It’s not as forward thinking as it is here; it’s going to be a shock. It’s going to be a challenge for you.”
“Why am I even here, Uncle Phil?” Claire asked. “I’m not this person. You know me. I’m not a timid little girl who’s going to be subservient and follow behind somebody for the rest of my life.”
“But you see the bigger picture. Think of the impact you could have there-”
“What impact?” Claire scoffed. “You heard the guy- the biggest impact I could have is by having a productive cooch.” She kicked a trashcan, sending the contents fluttering along the pristine floor. An agent walking down the hallway sneered at her, skittering away in fear when Claire hissed at him like a cat.
“Okay yes, it’s a downside. I know kids were never in your life plan. But there has to be more.”
“And what if there isn’t? What if I agree to this, and my shiny new life is a shit show?”
“It’s a big risk. But I know you’ve always wanted to help people. It’s part of why you joined S.H.I.E.L.D. in the first place. If you do this, and you go to Asgard, you could do a world of good for people there and here. Of course it’ll be different than you’re used to, but you would have power and influence you don’t and will never have here.”
“Yeah, but...is that worth what I’m giving up?”
“I can’t decide that for you,” Phil said sympathetically. “Take a couple minutes and think about it.” he patted her arm before leaving her alone in the hallway.
Claire stalked off in a huff, anger boiling in her veins. She wound up in a small break room that was mercifully empty. She sank into a chair with a sigh, trying to calm down enough to be logical.
Problem one: she had to have babies with whichever prince she married. Babies meant sex, which Claire was a fan of, but having babies often took more than one try. It wasn’t like Thor wasn’t nice to look at, but there was zero chemistry between them. They were friendly, but it was like a flat soda.
Claire wasn’t signing her life away for lackluster orgasms and no fizzle.
The door opened and Claire’s head shot up to see Thor. He offered a grim smile as he sat across from her at the table.
“Lady Claire I understand you have reservations about this,” he began. “But I give you my word- I would do everything in my power to make you happy.”
“I don’t doubt that,” Claire waved off his concern. “But tell me the truth. Would you want to have babies with me?”
“No,” Thor shook his head. “You are a fierce and skilled warrior, and I have no doubt you would be an excellent mother, but-”
“You don’t want to sleep with me.”
“I do not.” Thor said apologetically. Claire laughed at his stark reply.
“The feeling is mutual, dude,” she cackled. “I really don’t understand why your dad won’t accept Jane. It’s the obvious solution.”
“He feels that her background is not…” Thor paused, drumming his fingers on the formica tabletop. “Conducive to the hardship of ruling, is what he said.” he offered a sarcastic smile.
“That’s dumb. Jane is one of the smartest people in the world.” Thor brightened, his smile widening as he nodded. “So obviously, for me to take part in this, I couldn’t marry you. I may not know the two of you very well, but it’s clear that you care for each other, and I’m not in the business of busting up happy couples.”
“I thank you for your consideration. I fear it is something another person may not think of. This kind of offer...it tends to bring out the wolves.” Claire snorted. It was an incredible offer, and people could be greedy sons of bitches.
“I can imagine,” she said softly. “I’ll be upfront with you. I don’t think I’m the right person for this. Sure I have the ‘background’ that your dad wants, and I made an impression at field day,” Claire rolled her eyes. Thor grinned at her air quotes. “But I don’t think I’m cut out for it. I’m too loud and opinionated and I would probably get sent home for pissing off the nobles.” Thor chuckled.
“You and my brother would get on well.”
“Loki?” Claire asked. “You think so?” Thor nodded.
“I realize your people have a very colored opinion of him, and for good reason,” Thor held up a hand to stop her interrupting. “He is misguided, of that there is no doubt, but he has a good heart.”
“And you think he’d go for something like this?”
“I do not know,” Thor shook his head. “Loki has never had a high opinion of marriage, but if it offers him a chance to leave his cell…”
“Right,” Claire sighed heavily, leaning back in her chair. “He’s been locked up since New York. He’s probably losing his mind. No offense.”
“None taken,” Thor replied swiftly. “He is not himself and has not been for some time, but when we were children...I could not have asked for a better friend.”
“And you think getting out of prison would help him be like that again?”
“Possibly,” Thor shrugged. “I do not want to make false promises. But you would be protected.”
“He is pretty hot,” Claire remarked under her breath. “What? I have eyes.” she said defensively when Thor gawked at her. Thor held up his hands.
“So the thought of fulfilling marital duties with my brother isn’t as terrible as it is with me?”
“Much less,” Claire admitted, laughing when Thor gagged. “I will leave that to Jane.”
“If this is what you wish, I will help where I can. But Njord’s words about our traditions still stand- it is an ancient law of the land that the eldest child must wed before the younger siblings can be eligible. My father will have to be persuaded to allow this.”
“All I can do is try right?” Claire asked. “And if your dad says no, I’ll bow out.” Thor nodded in understanding before he pushed away from the table.
“I will give you some time to consider our discussion.” he got to his feet, treading toward the door with an air of resignation.
“Hey Thor?” she called after him. He turned on his heel, arm braced on the door frame as he looked back at her. “If I do this...what am I getting myself into?”
“My brother may be misguided, Lady Claire, but he would treat you with the honor you deserve. You would want for nothing.”
“That’s great and all, but what else? I have freedom here, Thor. I have a life. If I sign on the dotted line, am I giving all that up?”
“There is freedom in being a royal, but also significant cost. You will always have duties, responsibilities-”
“But is that all there is? Having babies and...being ornamental?” Thor’s mouth twisted as he considered his words, pounding on the door frame with his meaty fist.
“I do not know the extent of the rules ladies are bound by,” he said softly. “But my mother has always kept herself busy with things outside her familial duties,” he offered a tight smile. “I shall inform the others you need a few more moments.” he left her alone again and Claire embraced the silence the eldest Odinson left behind.
She wasn’t lying; she did find Loki attractive. Who wouldn’t? The man had a face made for sitting on. Tall, dark and lean, the second son of Asgard was far more her type than Thor. Even though his countenance was gaunt in all the surveillance she had seen, she could see the razor sharp cut of his cheekbones. The elegance in his strut. The long tapered fingers of his large hands.
Claire shoved back from the table, figuring it was better to strike while the pan was hot. She walked back slowly, listing the reasons a marriage to Loki could work better than a marriage to Thor. They did have commonalities: daddy issues, anger issues...they were both clear-cut Slytherins. Having sex with him would not be a hardship. She was still not fully sold on having babies with anyone, but Loki seemed a better prospect overall than Thor. Claire knew she’d be miserable with Thor.
At least with Loki there was hope.
“There you are!” Phil crowed as she came around the corner. Thor, Phil, Fury, Maria and Njord stood clustered in the hallway waiting for her return.
“May we continue?” Njord asked.
“Let’s hit it.” Claire agreed, walking back into the conference room.
“Have you had time to consider the offer?” Njord asked as they all returned to their seats.
“Just to be clear, the proposed alliance would be conditional upon my marriage to one of Odin’s sons; is that right?”
“You are correct Lady Claire, however the All-Father has decreed that the chosen Midgardian maiden would wed his eldest son, Prince Thor.” Pouty-Face gave a polite nod to Thor.
“Uh huh,” Claire nodded, scribbling Thor’s name from the paper and inking Loki’s name instead. “I’m not interested.”
“I’m afraid I don’t understand,” Pouty-Face replied, looking over at Thor nervously. “Prince Thor would make a fine husband- you would want for nothing-”
“Look, I know Thor. We’re friends,” Claire looked at Thor, who offered an encouraging smile. “But we’re not that close. And I can’t agree to marry him when he’s already involved with someone.” She added, glancing back over to Thor.
“I have also expressed my concerns about being forced into this marriage,” Thor said diplomatically. “I understand that my father is anxious to see this through but I cannot in good conscience abandon Jane to marry another.”
“It has already been decided!” Pouty-Face said crossly. “Lady Claire and Prince Thor will be married-”
“Listen, dude-”
“Njord.”
“Whatever!” Claire huffed. “I’m not marrying Thor. The person who should be in here would be a far better candidate in my opinion-”
“Lady Jane was not selected by the Allfather. He feels that someone with your skills and experience working under Lord Fury, would be a more suitable companion for his son.”
“I’m NOT. MARRYING. THOR!” Claire enunciated angrily.
“Lady Claire,” Njord said with false patience. “As I said- per our traditions, the eldest son must marry first. Even if the Allfather were to allow Thor to not take part in the alliance, your only other option would be the war criminal Loki,” Njord counseled. Claire had expected to hear his name at some point, but the venom in Njord’s voice threw her off. “Knowing his past deeds, could you truly accept this arrangement with him?” he questioned doubtfully. Claire paused, tapping the pen on the tabletop as she thought. Loki was the far more attractive option to her, but Njord’s hostility just mentioning him made it obvious that people did not like him. Would they hate her for marrying him?
“Claire?” Phil nudged her from the side, drawing her from her thoughts.
“I want to circle back to the part about babies.” Njord looked like he wanted to reach across the table and shake her.
“While it is true there is a burden to produce heirs for the line of succession, Prince Loki is second in line for the throne and would only become eligible to rule if Prince Thor should abdicate or the Allfather were to become incapacitated.” he replied coolly.
“So is that a definite requirement?” Claire pressed. “You didn’t exactly answer my question.”
“Yes, Lady Claire, it is a requirement,” Njord sounded like a parent trying to explain to their destructive child why they couldn’t stick forks in a toaster. “Knowing this, do you consent to marry prince Loki and fulfill the provisions of the alliance?” Njord asked. Claire’s heart beat a wild rhythm and sweat made the pen in her hand slippery. Hekate help me. Please don’t let me be walking into a lifetime of misery.
“Yes,” Claire said softly, clearing her throat. “I consent.” She repeated loudly, making the tension in the room dissipate.
“And if my king is unconvinced?” Njord pressed.
“Look, he wanted to form an alliance with my planet by marrying one of his sons to someone who wasn’t Jane. I’m Claire; have we met?”
“I was simply asking-”
“He’s getting two out of his three terms. I know for a fact I’m your only option. You rejected everyone else. So if I walk, you have to repeat this circus all over again. Since he’s anxious to see this through and soon, I’d say that’s the best deal he’s going to get. He can take it or leave it.”
“Indeed,” Njord agreed. “Very well, I shall inform my king and he will come to a decision. We will have an answer for you in a fortnight.”
“Fantastic, can’t wait,” Claire replied, getting to her feet and stalking out of the room, Thor hot on her heels. Jane sat outside the conference room, wringing her hands anxiously as she waited for them. “Hey Jane.”
“Hi,” Jane sniffled, launching herself forward to wrap Thor in a hug as soon as he cleared the door. “What happened in there?” she asked, scanning each of their faces as the room emptied. Fury and Maria herded Njord toward the exit to see him off.
“I said I didn’t want to marry Thor.” Claire said, her eyes following the group as they walked down the long hallway.
“So does that mean you’ll be marrying Loki instead?” Jane asked with a mix of hope and concern. Claire didn’t fault the scientist for the hopeful look in her brown eyes.
“It’s too soon to say,” Phil replied for Claire. “We made our counter-offer; now we wait for Odin’s reply.”
“How long will that take?” Jane asked Thor.
“Father will give us a reply in two weeks’ time.” He answered worriedly. “Claire clearly stated she would prefer to marry Loki; we have to hope that Father will honor that.”
“But doesn’t Loki have to agree also?”
“If Odin offers him a way out of prison he’ll probably take it. I know I would.” She added at Thor’s nod. Jane frowned, clearly unconvinced.
“But if he doesn’t…”
“If he doesn’t, I’ll back out. I might be a dick, but I’m not going to split you guys up.” Claire said. Jane launched herself at Claire, pulling her into a tight hug.
“Thank you,” she said wetly. “This has been a nightmare. It helps to know we have someone else on our side.”
“No problem,” Claire said, patting the scientist on the back. She’d be a mess if she were in Jane’s shoes. “I should probably go. Maybe get a jump start on packing.”
“Oh sure,” Jane released her. “How are you feeling about all this? I mean...I’ve never met the guy but I can’t imagine what he’ll be like-”
“I’d rather not dwell on it until Odin accepts the offer,” Claire cut her off. “I’ll see you guys later.” She was getting so drunk tonight.

Asgard
Njord made haste to the throne room as soon as he arrived back in Asgard. The events of the meeting with the Lady Claire churned in his mind as he crossed the bifrost and entered the city, winding through the curving streets toward the looming golden palace.
She had a keen mind, this Midgardian. While others had more pleasant manners, they lacked Lady Claire’s strength and cunning, which he’d seen in spades at S.H.I.E.L.D.’s so-called ‘field day’. Njord still did not understand why they called it that- they had not competed in a field at all! Instead they had played supposed war games with children’s toys on an open pitch, held foot races, and held contests to see who could jump the furthest or climb the fastest. It was a mockery of the arduous training Asgardian soldiers underwent.
His personal feelings aside, he could not overlook Lady Claire’s results. Consistently, she outshone her competitors. Manners could be assimilated. Her sharp tongue could be bridled. But her drive could not be taught. Therefore, as much as it pained him, she was the best candidate.
The Einherjar outside the throne room allowed him entry immediately, and Njord stepped inside to deliver his report.
“Ah Njord!” Odin called as he walked toward the dais. “What news do you bring from Midgard?” he asked.
“My King,” Njord knelt before the throne, placing his fist over his heart. “I have done as you asked. I have selected a maiden to join the royal family.”
“Excellent. Rise, and tell me what you have learned.”
“The negotiations with Midgard are going well, but the maiden S.H.I.E.L.D. is offering is…most unusual, if I may speak plainly.” He rose at Odin’s gesture.
“In what way?” Odin asked interestedly.
“She has consented to the treaty, but was quite adamant in her refusal to marry Prince Thor.”
“Did you explain her other option?”
“I did, Sire, but it did not sway her.” Njord shook his head. Odin pursed his lips in thought, settling back against his throne.
“And what of her carriage? Her mannerisms?”
“While I was selecting candidates, S.H.I.E.L.D. conducted what they call a ‘field day’, in which I witnessed the candidates compete against each other. The maiden I have selected bested all of her competitors. She is a commoner and would greatly benefit from lessons in deportment, but she seems sure of herself and she is a decent, if not aggressive, negotiator. Where Jane Foster is weak, she is…forceful. Strong-willed. She seems convinced you will allow her to wed prince Loki.”
“Why is that?”
“In her words, you are getting two of the three provisions your proposal contains and as you are eager to strike a bargain, you will be hard pressed to argue over which son she weds.” Njord responded, dreading his king’s reaction. The mortal woman couldn’t know this, but her rash words could cost the entire treaty if they offended the Allfather. To his surprise, Odin barked out a laugh.
“Such insight for a mere mortal. I daresay she will make an excellent match for Loki. Come,” Odin got to his feet. “You will accompany me to the dungeons- the prince will surely want to know about his future bride.”
~~~~
The dungeons beneath the palace of Asgard were hidden away, desolate and deep underground. One had to traverse an intricate maze of corridors to even reach them- a defense mechanism in case of a prisoner escape. That alone used to be enough to prevent Odin from worrying- but with the imprisonment of the second prince, more security measures had been employed. Odin had woven his own magic into the construction of heavy doors- only those he allowed may gain entry and exit. Should the disgraced prince have been clever enough to escape his cell, he would not have been able to get far.
Odin had not seen the prince since he had been brought before him for sentencing. Loki had shown no remorse for his actions on Midgard; even daring to ask the queen if he’d made her proud.
His arrogance had radiated from him like poison, and so Odin had felt no remorse in sending him to the dungeons to while away his days.
Odin was wise to Frigga’s habit of sending a duplicate to see the prince, as well as books and whatever else she thought would appease him. Odin had no such compunctions. When a child misbehaved, you did not coddle the child. You corrected it.
Njord trailed after the Allfather as they descended beneath the palace, traversing the labyrinthine corridors to reach the prison. At last the entry point came into view, breaking up the monotony of the long, windowless corridors. Two guards stood sentry on each side of the heavy door, both men placing fists over their hearts in salute to their king as they approached.
The men opened the heavy door without question, allowing Odin and Njord to enter. A steep staircase led them deeper underground, where another pair of guards waited at the bottom. They too greeted their king with fists over hearts, one guard nodding reverently before turning on his heel to lead Odin to his destination.
After all, their was only one prisoner Odin would deign to visit himself.
Prisoners shout and jeer as Odin and Njord pass. Some throw themselves upon the effervescent walls, pounding upon it with their fists as they beg as for release, curse their existence, or both. One prisoner rips off his shoes and throws them, striking the wall directly where Odin’s head passed by.
“Something terrible must have happened to warrant a visit from you, Allfather,” Loki hissed as he spied Odin approaching his cell. “It’s been far too long, and yet, not long enough.”
“Your barbed words will not incense me, Loki. I come bearing an olive branch.” Odin said. Loki scoffed, snapping his book shut.
“What can you possibly have to offer me? If I was meant for the axe it would have been swung ages ago.”
“I am negotiating an alliance with Midgard’s forces. They have agreed to arrange a marriage per our traditions and I had originally planned for Thor-”
“Yes, Norns forbid Thor ever have to make a sacrifice,” Loki rolled his eyes as he set the book aside and pulled out a deck of cards. “So the golden son has refused…what of your treaty now?” he began to shuffle the deck, a disgusted sneer overtaking his features as he put two and two together. “This is why you’ve come- to entreat me to play husband!”
“Don’t flatter yourself so, Loki. Thor has accepted that he will wed the girl if I so decree. However…” Loki’s stomach turned sour as the Allfather trailed off. His grip on the cards tightened, the thin edge of the card slicing into the pad of his finger. “I have another idea entirely.”
“You would have me accept. Take part in your charade,” Loki dealt the cards, arranging them in piles and making an inverted triangle. “I still would prefer the axe.”
“I offer you a secondary proposition,” Odin held up his hand to silence his adopted son. “Accept your place in the alliance and I will release you from your prison. But your freedom will depend entirely upon the girl’s safety and wellbeing- should anything untoward happen to her, the alliance will be in ruins and you will return here for the remainder of your days.”
“That is hardly a choice,” Loki scoffed, turning away from Odin to begin his game. “Any fool would be inclined to do as you say for a chance at freedom.” he glances past Odin to the eavesdropping prisoner shouting he would do as Odin asked.
“But you are no fool, yes, I know,” Odin said flatly. “You would be restored to your title and place in our family as well.” Loki picked up a card and moved it to another stack, flipping the card beneath face up.
“How enticing.”
“Regardless of your feelings for me, I know you care for Frigga. She misses her son. Marry the girl and you would be free to see her as often as you wish.”
“You oversell yourself, Allfather,” Loki glared at him, bending the cards in his hand and flicking toward the barrier between them in anger. “You’re desperate to see this done.” he added accusingly.
“It is a small price to pay for the good of my kingdom,” Odin brushed off the insult. “And yes, I am. Think well on my offer, and make a decision quickly. I may not be so generous tomorrow.”
“And if I refuse?”
“I could announce a death sentence instead of a wedding, if that is truly your wish.”
“I would expect no less,” Loki smirked as he collected the cards he’d thrown from the floor of his cell. “And you, I suppose, are here to extoll my future bride’s virtues?”
“If my king wishes.” Njord replied.
“I do. I expect a decision by midday tomorrow.” Clapping Njord on the shoulder, Odin departed; leaving Njord under Loki’s hostile gaze. A haze of green surrounded the cards before they flew back into Loki’s outstretched hand.
“Well?” the fallen prince asked sharply, settling in to resume his game. “What of her? Is she stupid? Ugly? Disfigured? I imagine she isn’t much to look at if Thor refused her hand.”
“Neither, my lord. She is rather attractive…and carries herself well. She is a skilled warrior, though she does have a sharp tongue, and a bit of a temper.”
“And she refused Thor’s suit?” Njord hesitated- the Lady Claire had indeed refused Thor’s hand and forced the Allfather’s hand, but the official story was different.
“The Allfather thought His Majesty would serve better under the alliance,” Loki’s lip curled at the formal title. It only served to mock him in here. “The Lady Claire consented to the treaty, but argued that Lady Jane would be a far better candidate than herself. Perhaps she thought to spare them the pain of being separated.” Njord added nervously.
“Then she is a fool. Noble, but a fool nonetheless,” Loki sneered as he cleared a stack of cards and set them aside. He tapped a card on the table dismissively as he thought. “Or blind. I’ve never known a woman to refuse Thor. If that is the case, she must be damn near insufferable,” Loathe as he was to accept, Loki could admit that he was curious to meet the woman who rejected Thor. At the very least, she could be somewhat reliable for companionship. Norns knew it would be nice to be free of his wretched cell. To be in his own chambers again… “Leave me.”
“What shall I tell the Allfather?”
“He gave me until tomorrow to consider his inane suggestion, did he not? Tell him I am doing just that.” Loki spat, muttering darkly under his breath as he turned back to his game. Njord disappeared from his field of vision rather quickly, leaving Loki alone once again.
What in the nine was Odin thinking? Hadn’t arranged marriages fallen out of fashion eons ago? They still happened of course, but not nearly as often. So why this marriage, and why now?
Why him? Hadn’t he suffered enough in the name of his so-called family? He should refuse; Thor could bear the burden of responsibility for once.
The fact that this woman refused Thor however…it intrigued him. Did that mean she chose him over Thor? Loki could not remember anyone apart from Frigga actively choosing him for any reason. Perhaps it would be tolerable.
But he was loathe to agree, if only to spurn Odin. Five years he had languished in this damn cell without so much as a word and Odin expected him to jump at the first opportunity? Damn him.
New York
Claire was startled awake by the loud ringing of her phone. She groaned angrily and reached behind her to fumble on her night stand for the offending device. She’d learned not to put the phone on the headboard. Nabbing it with her fingers, she brought it in front of her face and swiped to answer the call.
“Hello.” She said, her voice thick with sleep.
“We need you to come in,” Phil said in lieu of greeting. “The emissary from Asgard is back.”
“Aw man, Pouty-Face is back already? I was hoping he’d come down with a case of space amnesia but whatever. Fine,” Claire grumped, grunting in surprise when her phone fell from her hand and landed on her face. “’M’kay I’m up.” She mumbled.
“I’ll let him know you’re on your way,” Phil replied. “Hurry please.”
“Okay!” Claire hissed, throwing off her blankets and storming to her closet. “I’ll be there in twenty.”
“I’ll send a car for you.” Phil ended the call and Claire tossed the phone on her bed. She rummaged through her clothes and threw on yesterday’s jeans with her Alice in Wonderland tee. She quickly brushed her hair and sprayed some perfume before grabbing her jacket and cane and heading downstairs to meet the car.
~~~~
“Oh good, you’re finally here.” Phil said when she stepped out of the elevator.
“It hasn’t even been twenty minutes yet!” Claire protested as he grabbed her by the arm and steered her toward Fury’s office. He ushered her in and followed, closing the door behind them. Njord and Fury sat facing each other across his desk, papers strewn across the surface.
“Welcome back Agent,” Fury said as she sat in the chair to the far left, leaving Phil to sit between her and the emissary. “Njord and I were just discussing the final details of the treaty.”
“Super. What are they?”
“Firstly, it will please you to know that my king has agreed to your terms,” Njord said. “Prince Loki has agreed to the alliance as well.”
“I figured he would; everybody loves a get-out-of-jail-free card.” Njord looked at her quizzically.
“I don’t know what that means, my lady.” he said after a beat.
“Never mind,” Claire replied with a wave of her hand. “What else?”
“The Allfather has put forth a protection clause on your behalf, which we took the liberty of adding to the treaty. Prince Loki’s freedom will depend entirely upon your health and safety.”
“So if he puts hands to her, the alliance would be over?” Phil asked.
“The alliance would be ended and Prince Loki would return to prison for the remainder of his life.”
“Sounds easy enough,” Claire said. “I’m assuming that’s only in case of irreparable damage?”
“Claire!” Phil hissed.
“What? It’s a valid question,” Claire hissed back. “I just want clarification before I throw hands.”
“Don’t start please-”
“Do we need to work out a visitation clause or a schedule?” Fury asked, diverting attention from Claire’s ethical dilemma. “I’m sure Claire would want to come back and Phil would like to visit her in Asgard as well.”
“I don’t believe that is something the Allfather has considered,” Njord replied. “But this can easily be arranged, do not worry. Our seers have selected a date for the ceremony.”
“Already?” Phil asked. “When is it?”
“As Lady Claire will be permanently relocating to Asgard, the Allfather thought a fortnight would be enough time for her to pack her belongings.”
“Dude I’m right here; can you maybe not talk about me like I’m not?” Claire said combatively.
“My apologies, Lady Claire.”
“Sure. So when is the ceremony? Am I traveling to Asgard and then boom I’m married?”
“The ceremony itself will take place in six weeks. You will have two weeks to prepare your things for travel, and one month in Asgard to make all of your preparations and familiarize yourself with the palace and your duties.”
“And she’ll have her own room until the wedding?” Phil asked.
“Yes of course,” Njord nodded. “All the necessary arrangements shall be made for your accommodations, Lady Claire.”
“And what about Loki?” Claire blurted. “I get to meet him before the wedding, right?”
“You will get to meet your betrothed prior to the ceremony, Lady Claire. You will be chaperoned until afterward, upon which time the marriage will be consummated.”
“Right.” The tiny gouge in Fury's desk was suddenly very fascinating.
“It is tradition that the consummation is witnessed-”
“ABSOLUTELY NOT!” Claire shouted. “What is this, the Iron Age?!”
“Peace, Lady Claire. You will be pleased to know that the Allfather has agreed to forego the tradition. His Majesty Prince Loki shares your views on the practice.”
“Well thank god for small miracles,” Claire muttered angrily. “So now what?”
“I shall return in two weeks’ time to collect you and your things. I require your signature on this missive. This is not the treaty itself, but your pledge to fulfill the provisions which the Allfather and your government have agreed to.” Njord produced an honest-to-god scroll and handed it to her. Claire ran her thumb over the actual wax seal and unfurled it.
The writing was fancy, sloped cursive that Claire could barely read. Down at the bottom there was another wax seal and a scribble of ‘Odin Allfather’. Above that were two signature lines. One was blank and awaiting her signature. The other bore the scrawling, looping signature of her future husband.
Loki Odinson.
The scrape of glass caught Claire’s attention and she looked up from the scroll to see Njord had slid an inkwell over to her. He held out a quill for her to take. Claire stared at the quill for a moment before reaching out to take it. She dipped the quill into the ink and held it above the paper, unable to make herself sign it.
This shouldn’t be hard. She was getting what she wanted. Thor and Jane could have a happy life together now. She was marrying Thor’s hot, crazy brother.
This is what she wanted.
When Claire made a decision, she committed.
“Lady Claire?” Njord asked. A drop of ink had fallen onto the parchment and was beginning to dry. Claire took a deep breath, set the quill to parchment, and signed her name. She gave the quill and parchment back to Njord, watching as he sprinkled powder onto the scroll to dry the ink. The inkwell was capped and put away along with the quill. The scroll was rolled back up and vanished into the bag at Njord’s side.
“I do hate to rush off, but I must return to Asgard. There is much to be done before your arrival.”
“Okay,” Claire said quietly. Her entire body was trembling and a heavy pit of dread was roiling in her stomach. She had just signed away her entire life to make Jane and Thor happy; to keep her realm safe. She was trying desperately to focus on how satisfying it was to stick it to Njord and his smug stupid face, but she wanted to run out of the room and cry. “Great.”
“Excellent. I shall see you all in a fortnight.” Njord said cheerfully. He left quickly with Maria and Fury, leaving Claire alone with Phil.
“Are you okay?”
“Great.” Claire said hollowly, wrapping her arms around herself. Phil leaned over the table, putting a hand on her arm.
“I’ll help you pack. It’ll be alright.”
“FUCK!” Claire shouted after a moment; brutally, painfully aware of how drastically her life was about to change. “I’m such an idiot.”

Again, welcome to I Have You!
Tumblr media
The winter solstice had just ended, and the parties had ceased their music, parents were gathering their children and guiding them home from a long night of celebrating the next change of season, though it shall not happen for the next few months. Asgardians old and young had gathered to celebrate that they were in the deep of winter and spring shall soon bloom.
In the Asgardian Palace, the Aesir royal family had just finished their evening celebrations with their fellow lords and ladies of the other realms, apart from Jötunheim’s King, Laufey. Asgard and Jötunheim hadn’t had the best track record so it was best that they be left to themselves. The golden walls caught the last fires from the torches that hung from them, showing a slight regality of the now dominant darkness outside. At the head of the large table, King Odin finished his chalice of wine and set it down, rising to his feet to look down the table. Thor, his firstborn, was surrounded by his friends as they discussed the latest battle they had snuck away to fight. Odin admired Thor’s bravery and need for battle but did not approve that he sought out a fight when it was not needed, if he carried on then it could lead to more than just a verbal thrashing from the King and Queen of said realm. The old King sighed and raised his staff, Gungnir, high in the air before bringing it down on the stone floor to make a loud bang which brought all attention to him.
 “Welcome to newer times of the year, my friends. I hope the next year will be as peaceful and thriving as this one has been,” Odin spoke, and the table listened to him as he spoke, truly enamoured by every word the Allfather spoke, “I apologise for my brief appearance, but I must retire for the night. I wish you all safe travels home, goodnight.” The table chorused a soft goodbye and Odin stood, departing from the dining hall with his wife on his arm.
Everyone resumed their conversations once the doors to the dining hall shut behind the departing King and his Queen. About halfway down the table, a boy sat beside Volstagg and a black-haired girl that couldn’t be much older than himself. This boy was Loki Odinson, second born to Odin Allfather and Queen Frigga. The boy did not look happy to be attending the dinner that his mother had firmly demanded he attend. He had wanted to stay in his room and read all night, watch fireworks from his window and celebrate his own way but Frigga would not allow it.
 ‘You are almost 1,000 years old now, Loki, you must make a name for yourself.’ His mother had said to him that morning. But Loki had already made a name for himself, he had married young to a giantess, Angrboða. With her, he had sired three children: Fenrir, Jörmungandr and Hel. Loki loved his children with his heart, he had tried his hardest to keep Fenrir close to him so that Odin could not get his hands on his beloved son but while Loki was in the bath one night, a member of Odin’s Einherjar had snuck into his room and stolen his firstborn.
Angrboða and Loki mourned the loss of their son and continued to do even after Angrboða informed Loki that she was with child once more. The child had been born strange, an egg instead of a baby. Loki had been confused as he held the bloody egg, but he felt nothing but love as his baby grew inside it. The same happened to his egg that happened to Fenris only this time, it took less time. Angrboða was watching over her egg fondly as Loki was meeting with officials from Vanaheim when a member of Odin’s Einherjar came in from a door behind her and promptly knocked her out, stealing the egg. The next Loki heard of the egg, Odin informed him that it had been thrown into the oceans of Midgard and Loki grieved, grieved for the loss of his first son, for the banishment of his second and for the love he knew he will never receive off Odin now.
When Hel was born, Loki saw her half-dead body and sobbed, resting his head on Angrboða’s chest as his child suckled her nipple for milk. He wasn’t sobbing because he didn’t want this child, he already loved her so much! He cried because he knew she would also be considered a monster by Odin and sent away just like her elder siblings. Loki and Angrboða tried to convince everyone that she had lost the baby, that it had been stillborn but the Allfather had not believed her. Loki had taken it upon himself to keep Hel close and to protect her, he did not leave her in her cradle for a bath, he did not let her sleep away from himself and Angrboða.
 Loki was terrified of losing his only little girl, he had always wanted a girl and cherished her cute giggles and excited squeals whenever he showed her simple magic tricks. Even through all this added protection, Odin had torn his only daughter from his arms and banished her to Helheim. That day came and went, many more passed and soon even Angrboða left him, she had died of a broken heart at losing all three of her children but Odin passed the death off as the flu to his citizens and life went on.
Then there was a time, three hundred years later, when Loki decided he had had enough of grieving for his family, and he wanted to ruin Odin. Loki decided it would be funny to seduce Odin’s current warhorse, Svaðilfari. It had been all fun and games until she discovered she could not turn back from a mare into her human form, she had used her magic to scan herself and found another little bundle of magic beneath her own. Loki’s heart stopped and she realised she could not stay near Asgard’s palace while she was pregnant with her child and so she ran. Many warrants went up all over the Realm to find the prince and as she was reaching her eleventh month of pregnancy, she had hidden to wait out the rest in the mountains and away from any other life.
When her son, Sleipnir, had been born and she could shift back into her human form, she held her son close to her and looked down at him lovingly, appreciating this blessing from the gods. Sleipnir had been born a foal as she had carried him that way for the whole duration, she watched him change into a normal human as his magic slowly built up over the few hours, she spent holding him. He looked just like her, ebony hair already on his head, deep green eyes, and the cutest smile he’d ever seen since… her heart skipped a beat as she remembered Hel and her smile. Sleipnir had Hel’s smile and she was so proud.
Two months later, when he was sure that Odin wouldn’t think him to be the culprit of Svaðilfari’s disappearance, he returned to Asgard castle with Sleipnir. Odin had been suspicious of course, but Sleipnir showed no reason to be a threat, so he wilfully ignored the child for once. Loki had been thankful for this, and he had shown his son around the castle with a bright smile, listening to Sleipnir’s cooing and enthusiastic squeals.
Then they arrived, Queen Serena and her two daughters, Serenity, and Isabella. It was widely known that Princess Isabella was adopted after her father had saved her from her mother and sent her to live with the royal family of Midgard’s moon.
Loki was required to stand with his family, staring boredly at the new royalty that he would have to study about later as he itched to get back to his son safely locked in his chambers.
"King Odin, oh grand Allfather, I present my daughter, Princess Isabella Moon to you and pronounce her my heir to the title of Queen of the Moon Kingdom," Queen Serena announced and Loki raised a curious eyebrow as he took in those words. This Queen is favouring her ward rather than her firstborn, he mused to himself, perhaps I, Odin's second born still may have a chance against my brother if that is so.
"The Nine Realms recognise Princess Isabella Moon as heir to the Moon Kingdom," Odin replied, holding his hand out to Isabella and watching as she took it warily, "Princess Isabella Moon, can you declare with your whole heart that you will honour this title and always respect your mother's choice?"
Isabella's back straightened and she nodded bravely, "I so swear it, Allfather," she replied softly, her voice catching in Loki's ears unexpectedly, igniting a curiosity that had been dulled through motherhood.
Odin nodded and looked beyond the Princess to the crowds, "I present to you, Crown Princess Isabella Moon of Midgard, the heir to their Moon Kingdom!"
The crowd applauded and Isabella smiled nervously as she looked out to the crowd, waving hesitantly as she realised the situation she was in before her younger sister grabbed her hand and dragged her out onto the dance floor.
Despite his interest, he took no notice of Princess Isabella as he was still nursing Sleipnir and recovering from his birth but later in the night when cuddling his already sleeping son, she walked up to him with a gentle smile.
“May I hold him, your majesty? I won’t wake him, I swear,” the girl smiled and looked at him with a curious look in her eye and he reluctantly handed his son to her, watching her carefully as if she would turn away and take Sleipnir from him. She didn’t. She took a seat beside him and gazed down at the young boy in her arms with a soft smile before she began to speak again, “is he yours? Mother had me and Serenity informed of your fluidity to respect you! He’s so beautiful, he looks like you.”
Loki looked at the girl with surprise evident on his face before he smiled and nodded as he gazed down at his son, “his name is Sleipnir. I love him more than life itself and if something happened to him…. I wouldn’t forgive myself…” He mumbled weakly and smiled gently at her before huffing and wiping his eyes quickly, “I’m sorry, I’m still very hormonal. Mother says it will last a month longer and then I shall be back to normal.” He gently took Sleipnir back from her and smiled lovingly at his sleeping son’s face.
Smiling, Isabella tucked a bit of hair behind Loki’s ear and watched him curiously, “forgive me, the Allfather spoke of you and said your reputation was horrible, that you cared for no one but yourself and your son.” That made Loki laugh as he looked up from his baby to meet Isabella’s eyes, his heart so full of grief and pain that Isabella could see it so clearly on his face and she reached her hand out and cupped his cheek, flinching back when Loki instinctively flinched away from the contact.
“Please don’t,” Loki mumbled, looking away from her and down at his son, “I’m not at all crazy about contact after what has happened to my family.” He sounded so broken, his eyes were glossy with unshed tears and Isabella hated herself for taking all this time to get to him, to get to her soulmate.
“I’ve gone through many lovers, Isabella, I’ve never been able to hold them. Please don’t think you’ll be the first to try to stay with me, the last one died because of me and my family.”
Isabella sighed and nodded, giving him a smile before she stood up and moved to kneel in front of Loki and Sleipnir, pushing away some of Sleipnir’s loose hair and she giggled when Sleipnir started to rouse from his sleep, “I suggest we should move him, your highness, if he wakes right now, he shall not sleep the night.” Loki nodded right away and lead Isabella through a side door and down a corridor or two until he got to the grand doors of his chambers, and he turned to her with a shy smile.
The way Isabella’s heart fluttered when she saw Loki’s own smile was indescribable! She had just met the Godling, and she already knew that he was the one she was assigned to by Ymir and the Yggdrasil. Gently stepping back, she gave a small wave to Loki and to Sleipnir’s slowly rousing face before she turned on her heel and left.
Loki watched her leave with a sad smile before Sleipnir started to get fussy and he laughed, walking into his room and over to his bed after locking the front door and all the windows, “you are a fusspot when you just wake up, sweetie!” Laying Sleipnir down, Loki undressed him from his onesie and proceeded to change him before giving him a new nappy and conjuring up a bottle of warm milk as he paced around his bedroom, smiling down at his son as he watched the young boy drift off again while drinking the milk. Sighing in relief, Loki slipped into bed and laid Sleipnir down beside him and held his tiny hand in his own before closing his eyes and falling asleep.
"Thank you," he whispered into the night, his mind thinking of the Princess he had just met and the promise of a better life.
Tumblr media
He had let his guard down. Odin had backed off. Everything was supposed to be fine! He had merely stepped into the next room to grab Isabella and show her that Sleipnir had finally said “mummy”! When he came back, though, his son was gone. His son was gone, along with the last of his heart. Dropping to his knees, he stared at his bed where his child had been not two minutes ago. He broke. His heart was now sawdust blowing in the Asgardian summer. Isabella knelt beside him and rested her head on his shoulder as she tried to hold back her own tears. It had been a year; she had known the broken family for a year and had become quite attached to Sleipnir, so this loss affected her deeply. She watched as her soulmate’s heart shattered and the boy in front of her barely looked like the proud mother, he had been just three minutes ago... He looked so vulnerable, so broken, so helpless and Isabella hated seeing him so.
“It can’t be so, I just left for a moment! How did... how did he get in here...?” Loki mumbled weakly, more to himself than to the woman holding him so lovingly. He stood abruptly and started pacing around the room, trying to figure out the fateful lapse in his judgement. Why had he walked out on his son? Did his son cry? Did he call for his mummy only to be taken away still? Where had Loki gone wrong in his watch? Why did he look away?!
“Loki, you’ll burn a hole into the marble if you carry on pacing,” a gentle voice whispered by his side, a warmth surrounding him as Isabella took him into her arms and sniffled, “we will all mourn for them alongside you, but you must remember that I can easily break the treaty with Asgard for this, you know Serenity will agree to my choice when she finds out about this and so will Mother.” Isabella stroked her hand through his silky hair and frowned when Loki shook his head.
“No, this is another of Father’s malicious tests of loyalty. Pull out now and he’ll forbid your return to Asgard the moment the comment leaves your mouth. I can’t lose you too, Isabella, you’re the only one left!” Loki begged her, his weakness shining through now that he had lost all of his children. Isabella helped him cling to her as she shushed him gently, stroking his hair and frowning.
The Demoness knew that she would not be able to forget how broken Loki looked on the day he lost his foal. All of the faith that she had for the Allfather and belief that Loki and Odin might be peaceful someday shattered the moment the first tear rolled down Loki's cheek. Now her loyalty was to Loki and only Loki.
Delicately, she cupped his cheek and smiled lovingly at him as she lifted his head so he could look at her, “I’m never leaving you, I have you, I promise.”

To Have and To Hold - Chapter 8
THaTH Masterlist Complete Masterlist
Summary: Loki and Violet reunite. Violet gives birth. A/N: I wanna give a big thanks to @michelleleewise and @lokisgoodgirl for being my BETA readers and for helping me along with my unhinged ideas. Pairing: Loki x OFC/Reader Word Count: Over 1.8K Tags/Warnings: Pregnancy. Early labor. Pain. Dividers by: @firefly-graphics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pain was blinding. Your vision was fading around the edges as you tried to focus on something, anything that might relieve the pressure taking over your lower body.  It was as if God himself wrapped his hand around your pelvis and back and squeezed. It came in full force, and He was not giving you any mercy.
You were taken to a brightly lit room. There were many people in black orderly uniforms standing alongside the walls, ready and willing to be of service. Two of them tended to you and took you away from Thor’s embrace. Hands were flying everywhere as they stripped you and placed you in a lightweight silk shift.
“Loki? Where’s Loki?” you cried out.
“Thor, fetch your brother,” Frigga whispered.
“But Father would never allow that,” he answered.
“I’ll deal with your father. You get Loki here any way you can. Do you hear me?”
“Yes, Mother.” Thor nodded as he ran out of the room.
“It’s too early. It’s too early,” you kept repeating to Bruce who was holding onto your hand.
“Vee, it’s gonna be ok.” Bruce squeezed your hand, and rubbed your shoulders, comforting you the only way he knew.
“Why…how, Bruce? It’s too early. Please…” you cried. “My baby.”
“I…I don’t know, Vee. But right now, let’s focus on getting that baby out.” He nodded, his nerves betraying him. “I’m sorry I’m not Loki. But I’ll be here for as long as you need me, ok?” You nodded as you breathed through your mouth.
In. Out. In. Out. The occasional screams of agony tear from your lungs as you try to wrap your head around what’s happening.
“Lady Violet, my name is Gilda. I’ll be your midwife today.” The woman said to you gently. You nodded at her while keeping Bruce right by your side. “We have set up the healer’s bath as a birthing pool for you, milady. The soul forge on top would be able to help us assess the baby and help you along. All right?” You nodded and agreed. “Ok let’s get you in.” Gilda went to your opposite side and helped walk you along to the bath.
“Do Asgardians normally give water births?” you asked, your curiosity winning over your wincing pain.
“Some do, milady. However, it is the preferred method of the Jotunns. And since…” Gilda looked up at you, contrite. “I apologize for being so bold, milady.”
“That’s all right. Since the baby is half Jotunn, you thought it would be significant to honor this method. I appreciate the fore…aaaahhhhhgggg…the forethought,” you screamed.
“Your contractions are getting closer together. Let’s get the soul forge over you and we can begin.”
“No! Wait! Loki. I need Loki. Please,” you begged.
“There isn’t much time, milady.”
Tumblr media
Thor ran down the corridor. Beings of all shapes and sizes hollered and screamed at the sight of the god of thunder. Some were loud and angry for being put in there by the prince himself.
Thor descended one more flight of stairs until he found the one Loki was in privately. His cell was bright and furnished. A contrast to the dark and desperate appearance of Loki wallowing in the corner of the cell.
“Loki…” Thor huffed.
“You’re a tad too late, brother. The sentencing was done hours ago. It was stupendous!” Loki’s crooked smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“Loki!”
“I believe, Father tried to sell tickets…”
“LOKI! Will you shut your insufferable mouth for just one moment?!” Thor yelled and suddenly looked around to see if there were any guards in sight. Thor placed his hands on the lock by the door and the electric borders fell.
“What are you doing?” Loki asked confused. He got up, ready to run, not wanting to waste any time.
“I arrived with Bruce and Violet moments ago.”
“Violet is here?!” Loki asked shocked.
“Yes. She is in labor. Come I’ll fill you in on the way.”
“Where? What room?”
“Healer’s temple. The baths.” Thor said only seconds before Loki grabbed his arm and transported both of them into the hallway of the temple. Thor looked around to orient himself and pointed at the door to his left.
Loki didn’t waste any time as he opened the door and searched the vast room for you. Healers and dignitaries crowded around to bear witness to the birth of the next royal line. He heard you first before he saw you. Your screams of pain were loud and heartrending. “Darling.” He said pushing through the crowd. Running over to you. Reaching for you.
“Loki? Loki!” You held your hand out reaching for him too. And as you both crossed your fingers together and finally held each other, a sense of peace entered your body, making you lose your breath and hitch. He was here and he felt like home. Memories of those long nights sneaking behind the compound where his hands, the same hands that caressed your cheek and held your face, were now finally holding you.
Tears fell down your face as you held on to him tighter. You were afraid that if you let go, he would disappear. And you didn’t think you could handle that right now. “My beautiful Violet. I’m here. I’m here,” he whispered, leaning over you and kissing your forehead.  Loki started looking around. “Who the hell are all these people? Did you want them here?”
“I…I don’t know. I just thought…they needed to be here…” you answered.
“Everybody out!” Loki screamed as he pointed to the door.
“All right, you heard him! Anybody who is not necessary, out!” Thor yelled, ushering other bystanders and chambermaids. Frigga hugged both you and Loki tightly before leaving the room. Thor clapped his brother on the shoulder for support and followed his mother out.
“Loki. I watched her as best I could.” Bruce came up to him.
He shook Bruce’s hand, “I am grateful to you, my friend. I can never thank you enough for all that you’ve done for me…and my family.” Loki said holding you tighter. Bruce gave you a small kiss on the cheek as he said goodbye too and left the room. The only people who were left were Gilda and two other nursemaids.
Loki stripped bare down to his tunic. “Are you ready, my heart?” He asked as he picked you up and carried you over to the large tub. You shook your head as more tears fell from your face. You held on to your stomach as he lowered you down into the warm water. You were submerged up to your chest in the shallow tub. The shimmering fabric of your tunic floated around you like a halo making you look ethereal.
Loki stepped in shortly after you, making you pause. He pulled you gently in front of him as he sat behind you and cradled you in between his legs.
“I’m never letting you go again.” He said adamantly in your ear. You relaxed into Loki, his strong hands cradling your hips. His lean frame protecting you, lifting you up and supporting you, reminding you that you didn’t have to do this alone.
“I’m sorry, Loki,” you started to cry. “I’m so sorry.” You repeated the words in between your screams. Over and over. Loki shushed you wiping your tears, a useless endeavor with his wet hands.
Gilda stood at the foot of the tub as the two maidens placed the soul forge above you. She took one look at it and was about to say something, but you had screamed at the top of your lungs. You grabbed Loki’s knees and squeezed. Your fingernails digging into his skin.
“Ok, milady. Push.” Gilda ordered, kneeling down and reaching into the water.
“I’ve got you, Violet,” Loki said into your ear. You nodded, answering his devotion as you screamed out some more. Your head rolled back as he wiped the sweat off your brows. “You’re doing great, my love.”
After what seemed like hours of pushing, and breathing, you felt momentary relief. You felt your life, all the love and knowledge you had acquired since your birth, pushed out of your body. Your breathing came in easier but was still ragged. You sobbed when you saw Gilda pull your babe from the waters and heard the first cries of your newborn child.
Loki held onto your face, kissing you endlessly, sighing soft praises to you. “You did it, my love. You did it. You are radiant, mother goddess.”
You cried, extending your arms out to hold your baby. Gilda handed it to one of the maidens. “Tressa, place this mirakel in one of the smaller soul forges.” Gilda turned to you, seeing your look of anger and disappointment. “Not yet, milady. You still have one more to deliver.”
“One more?!” both you and Loki yelled out instantaneously. As if it were being summoned, you felt another contraction. Gilda pointed to the soul forge atop of you. “I was going to mention it, but there was no time.” You both looked up, and the quantum field generator showed you an image of another small baby, still inside your body.
“Are you ready to push again?” Gilda smiled.
You nodded, as you barred down and held onto Loki’s hands. His nose running alongside your face, whispering nothing but encouraging words to you. “My darling Violet,” he chuckled. “Always giving me more love back than I give you.” He kissed your temple. “Two miracles in one. I will forever be grateful.” With those beautiful words, you felt his love. You pushed one last time and the third love of your life was born.
You were so exhausted. So overwhelmed. Gilda took the baby and handed it to another maiden who wrapped them and placed them lovingly in the soul forge along with their sibling.
“I want to see them,” you cried.
“You will, milady. But let’s clean you up first.” Gilda instructed. In an instant, Loki picked you up and transferred you over to another tub. The clean waters ran over you and Loki as he joined you.
“Gilda, please tend to the babies. I will look after my wife.” He said in a low voice.
“As you wish your highness,” she said smiling. “Shall I inform her majesty, the Queen?”
“Yes, please. But no visitors at this time.”
“Yes, your highness.” Gilda left to tend to the babies, while one of the handmaidens delivered Loki’s announcement.
Loki’s voice was soothing and gentle as he washed your body. He took great care with you and healed what he could. “I’m afraid the rest will have to be looked at by Gilda or perhaps one of the other healers. Do you feel all right, darling?” he asked.
With fatigue creeping its way to you and the events of the last two days overwhelming you, you couldn’t help but give in to the tiredness. You nodded your head and closed your eyes.
“Sleep, then. I’ll watch over you. I’ll watch over our family.”
