Alfred Hitchcock's masterful suspense and Daphne du Maurier's haunting storytelling make for the perfect Halloween combination!
This incredible gown takes center stage in part of the plot of the 1940 adaptation of Rebecca, where Joan Fontaine wears it as the second Mrs. de Winter.
But did you know this fantastic piece is not original to the film? It was designed for Greta Garbo as Marguerite Gautier in the 1936 film Camille. The stars on the skirt have been removed, and the bodice has been altered, but make no mistake, it's the same gown!
Don't believe me? Check out behind-the-scenes footage of costume tests, showing Joan Fontaine wearing the unaltered gown! bit.ly/VicEd138

Joseff of Hollywood, a master jeweler 💎 who provided pieces for countless films during the studio era, is credited with creating this pearl necklace. Joseff’s exquisite jewelry was in high demand, and he rented his creations to multiple studios since he was not contracted to a specific one. 💕 The piece made its first appearance in the 1941 adaptation of 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒚’𝒔 𝑨𝒖𝒏𝒕, gracing Kay Francis as Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez before being used again in 1952 by Olivia de Havilland as Rachel Sangalletti Ashley, in Daphne du Maurier’s 𝑴𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍, 📚 where the necklace became an integral part of the plot, which Richard Burton’s character gifting the necklace to Rachel as a symbolic gesture, setting the stage for a captivating tale of love and intrigue. 💍 The last known usage of this necklace 📿 before it was auctioned off was in the 1987 episode of 𝑫𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒚, entitled 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒓, where it was worn by none other than Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington Colby. 🔗 This necklace has been used many more times over the years. Happy 60th Anniversary to one of the most effortlessly chic disaster-horror-animal attack films ever made. Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “The Birds” based on the short story by Daphne Du Maurier (Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, My Cousin Rachel). The film has a complicated and messy history that’s too thorny to get into now but just take a moment today to watch The Birds, the film or the ones outside. Maybe it’s a good idea to always keep and eye on the ones outside. #thebirds #hitchcock #daphnedumaurier (at Los Angeles/Hollywood California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqU0AoCOH5W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#rebecca #rebeccamovie #rebecca1940 #daphnedumaurier #alfredhitchcockpresents #alfredhitchcock #filmcult #filmculte #laurenceolivier #cinephile #cinema #movies #geekinworld #judithanderson #chefdoeuvre https://www.instagram.com/p/Cps67g2rj1V/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Click 🦜🦆Link In Bio🦆🦜 to listen to our (50th!!) episode on Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS for its 60th anniversary! “Hitchcock-A-Doodle-Do.” Matthew and Quinton return to the Master of Suspense, except this time they’re trading in shower curtains for sparrows. The Birds is an obvious choice to look at environmental concerns of the 1960s, so we discuss it anyway. Believe us when we say that if birds had marrow, we’d find it. What does The Birds have to do with Vietnam? What is Hitchcock telling us about chaos and order during one of the most tumultuous decades in recent history? And does anyone have a quarter so I can place a call in this phone booth… Swipe right for some genuine birdage. - ##horror #horrormovies #film #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #moviepodcast #horrorpodcast #visceralreactions #thebirds #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #tippihedren #1960s #daphnedumaurier #rodtaylor #jessicatandy #whenanimalsattack #veronicacartwright #ecohorror #applepodcasts #spotifypodcast (at Audubon Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnrSfX2OieM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

hmm...
And my next #booktoscreen read was #rebecca by #daphnedumaurier I think I had the wrong impression of what this book was about before reading it. I had it in my head that this was gonna be a ghost story in an old creepy mansion. I was ready for hauntings and scares. This was not what this story was, so for me it was a disappointment. I still watched the movie though. It was good. Kristin Scott Thomas played her role as the mean house manager well. But though I tried to let them go, my original expectations marred how I felt. I was underwhelmed and disappointed. This is why I try not to know too much before I read or watch a movie usually. Oh well, what do you do? Onto the next book I go #bookstagram #movies #bookgeek #readersofinstagram #bookworm #readmorebooks #booknerd #bookish #movienight #books #bibliophile #bookaddict #bookaholic #bibliotherapy #read #reading https://www.instagram.com/p/CQP0St3r974/?utm_medium=tumblr

I watched the Netflix adaptation of this last year with the wonderful @dora.bodrogi , so I already knew the story. But Daphne du Maurier’s writing style is so evocative that it pulls you immediately into the world of Manderley, with its mysteries and moral ambiguities. The story is reminiscent of Jane Eyre, with all the best hallmarks of gothic fiction: a dark, Byronic anti-hero, an ominous house haunted by its past, strange and mysterious fires. Despite the cliches, du Maurier’s writing kept me captivated - there’s a reason this novel is still a classic! I also loved the narrative decision to keep the protagonist nameless - it emphasised her dangerous obsession with Rebecca herself, and her constant fear that she will never be good enough. ~
Q: What’s a gothic story that you’ve read/watched recently and loved?
A: The Haunting of Bly Manor (based on Turn of the Screw) only arrived on Netflix last October and I’ve already watched it three times… That’s how good it is…

🤍 “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” Rebecca was quite a remarkable read for me. I loved the atmosphere of this book. It was deep, dark, mysterious. For me it was fascinating to be inside the head of the main character and perceive the world as she did. It created the right mood for this novel and helped us care about the events in the book. When I started this novel, I knew the main synopsis but tried to avoid any spoilers as much as possible. So while reading I wasn't even sure about this book genre and it helped a lot with additional tension, anticipation and nervousness. I think it's a good idea for me to leave it this way for you too. In my opinion, this book benefits from not knowing anything about it. Daphne Du Maurier is a master of prose for sure. She can write the novel the way it absorbs you completely and doesn't let you go till the final. I was engaged in reading from the very beginning and for me this book was truly a great page-turner. My final review is 8.5/10 for this novel. 📖 “Happiness is not a possession to be prized, it is a quality of thought, a state of mind.”
