Notebook Reviews: DANTE'S PEAK
Notebook Reviews: DANTE’S PEAK
Roger Donaldson – 1997 There’s plenty of fun to be had with Roger Donaldson‘s Dante’s Peak. This volcano disaster movie has excellent special effects and the film has a brilliant sense of tone and setting. Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton are both excellent in the lead roles. The former shows that there more to his career than James Bond and the latter lets people know that she’s not just Sarah…

Volcano Is Your Weekend Cheesy Movie
Volcano Is Your Weekend Cheesy Movie
Cheesy movies are a special joy. Despite an earnest attempt to create compelling stories, filmmakers often miss the mark. Some movies turn out simply mediocre. Others become entertaining in spite of their flaws or authorial intent. They become cheesy. In Your Weekend Cheesy Movie, we’ll examine some of these misguided efforts for what they fail at achieving and what they manage to do right.

Hey Supercult West! This is Supercult South Bad Movie Professor Cameron Coker (BS in “Tommy Lee Jones” with a minor in “Milkshake Lava”) and I’m reaching out to you from across the country to show you how to make a Baking Soda Volcano.
Tumblr media
youtube
Okay, so, first we’re going to set our foundation. We gotta make a nice spot for the Volcano. It’s important that it’s 1997 and that we have a budget of about $90 million dollars.
Okay, then we need to gather our ingredients. That’s going to be our actors, our director, shooting locations, all that stuff. So for this Volcano we’re going to need 3 cups of grouchy Tommy Lee Jones…there we go. And about 1 cup of Anne Heche (you might remember that we used this same ingredient when we baked some homemade Six Days and Seven Nights last week). Now we’ve got another cup of Don Cheadle, very important, and about 2 tablespoons of Gabi Hoffman. The Gabi Hoffman doesn’t really do anything in this recipe, but it does help round out the other ingredients. Then you’ve got an empty plastic Director Mick Jackson (you can still smell a bit of L.A. Story from the last time we used this). There are some other pit players here, a deep Keith David, John Corbett coloring, Michael Rispoli detergent, and of course the pyrotechnics here that really make the thing pop. Now, the ash is going to mostly be made of ground newspaper and the lava is primarily made of methylcellulose, the thickening agent used in fast-food milkshakes so just be careful that when you do this at home that you act a lot more excited and scared of it than you actually are. That’s called acting and, while it won’t make this recipe any better, its important to show effort.
Razzie Nominee for Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property
“WE NEED TO CONTRIVE MORE REASONS TO BE WITHIN 100 FEET OF DEATH!”
This man has built an entire career off of this determined scowl.
“It’s Hotter than Hell!” So, we extinguish L.A. and then move on to hell. Sounds like a plan.
Oh no…not…LINES!
See a volcano is usually a mountain like a mound. But here it’s more flat, like this, so it’s less of a volcano and more of a sinkhole I guess?
I have one job in this movie, it’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it, ALRIGHT!?
“It’s about how lava boils out of the La Brea Tar Pits, threatens a stretch of Wilshire Boulevard, and then takes a shortcut through the city sewer system. The ads say “The Coast Is Toast,” but maybe they should say “The Volcano Is Drano.”” – Roger Ebert
Now imagine that it’s just milkshake and the fireman are just thirsty.
First, we gotta get all these basic ingredients working together. You gotta work it all together until it’s smooth. Then you make it all into the shape of a volcano around the director and the special effects. Now when you’re done it should be about a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 5.5 on IMDB, a 50% on Meta Critic, a Razzie Award Nomination for ‘Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property’, and make just a little over it’s budget back in sales. Now you might be saying, “Cameron, this looks an awful lot like that Dante’s Peak you showed us two months ago. That one looks better, made more money, has better reviews, and, uh, actually has, like, a volcano in it. What makes this Volcano DIY project different?”

The answer is a secret ingredient that I neglected to mention before supercultists: Cheese. Like, this is a very cheesy volcano movie. Here, get some unnecessary slo-mo of this. Yeah, yeah, and maybe some gratuitous shaky cam. Good stuff. Now if you don’t have this much cheese at home you can always substitute camp, but I personally think that camp doesn’t mix well with the Tommy Lee Jones in this recipe.
Alright, here we go, time to add the pyrotechnics!
*Baking soda volcano erupts. Cameron dips a finger in the mixture. Tastes it. Grimaces.*
It’s alright, I guess. Needs more cheese.
Supercult West is proud to present Volcano!

Brosnan, Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnan turned 68 years old on 16 May 2021. Suave, debonair, charismatic and a great actor, Pierce Brosnan has the perfect combination of what makes a true movie star. Brosnan spent the best part of the ’80s and early ’90s alternating between taking the lead in television movies and low budget features and supporting roles on the big screen. This time saw him give great performances in…

Throwing Rocks
“The writer’s job is to get the main character up a tree, and then once they are up there, throw rocks at them.” —Vladimir Nabokov
I read this quote a long time agon and had sorta forgotten it. My editor, (in a roundabout way) reminded me of it. But have you ever noticed this? A great example of this is the movie Dante’s Peak. Especially the last half.
The volcano is about to erupt, ash is…
