Hollis Cavner 3M Open will have a Competitive Tour

It’s labeled as Minnesota’s golf event of the summer. Tournament officials hosted media day on Monday at the course, and Executive Tournament Director Hollis Cavner quickly addressed the elephant in the room that's challenging PGA Tour fields: The LIV Tour.

The new Saudi-backed golf tour has attracted some of the game’s best players, including Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuisen. PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan is suspending any current players headed to the LIV Tour, meaning they can’t play in any tour events, such as the 3M Open.

The LIV Tour is a series of eight events that are 54-hole tournaments without a cut. The winner of the first event, Charl Schwartzel, won more than $4 million. The last place finisher gets $100,000. Players are also put on teams, which are paid for their group’s performance. Some players got paid hundreds of millions of dollars to join.

This year’s field will include 32 players who have won a tournament within the last 12 months, including six winners so far this season. The biggest of those names includes Sungjae Im, Tom Hoge and Tony Finau. Their most recent commitment, Sahith Theegala, took second to Xander Schaufelle on Sunday at the Travelers Insurance Championship.

The 3M Open will also feature 11 players who have finished in the top 10 in the tournament the last three years. They include Adam Hadwin, Lucas Glover, Spring Lake Park native Troy Merritt, Charles Howell III and Finau.

Fans will also see three major champion winners, most recently Danny Willett, the 2016 Master’s champion. Cavner said he’ll release more big names coming to Blaine in the three weeks leading up to the tournament. TPC Twin Cities will play to a 7,441-yard par-71, and the field will be cut from 156 to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes. The winner gets $1.35 million, and 500 points towards the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Edina native and former professional tennis player Mardy Fish, now playing on a celebrity golf tour, ha also been given a sponsor's exemption to play. The event, with its corporate sponsors, will also raise more than $1.5 million for local charities M Health Fairview, The First Tee Minnesota and Greater Twin Cities United Way.

"I feel good about where we’re at. We want this to be the happening of the summer. We’re going to have the best tournament ever this year I think," Cavner said.

2012 Masters - An exciting Sunday round, that featured four players holding at least a share of the lead, saw Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen tied after the 72nd hole.  After a spectacular second shot from the woods on the second playoff hole, Watson wins his first Green Jacket.  Airs Thursday, April 9 (2:00-7:00 pm ET)

2004 Masters - In one of the most exciting second-nine performances in Masters history, Phil Mickelson duels Ernie Els, with Mickelson ultimately securing a victory with an 18-foot birdie putt on 18 to claim his first Green Jacket and the first major championship victory of his career.  Airs Saturday, April 11 (2:00-6:00 pm ET)

2019 Masters - Eleven years after his last major win, and 14 years since his last Masters victory, Tiger Woods wins his fifth Green Jacket, topping a star-studded leader board by one stroke.  Airs Sunday, April 12 (12:00-6:00 pm ET)

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland | Kisner shoots 66 to take early lead in British Open

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Kevin Kisner took advantage of light winds and warm temperatures to shoot a 5-under 66 and take the early lead in the British Open, where defending champion Jordan Spieth was also in the mix on Thursday.

The American needed only 22 putts as he made his way around the Carnoustie links, where wispy rough and fast fairways made for low scores among the early groups. He had a one-shot lead over Erik Van Rooyen, a South African who shot 67.

Spieth was 3 under through 14 holes as he tried to become the first champion to repeat since Padraig Harrington won at Carnoustie in 2007 and again at Royal Birkdale the next year.

Kisner was 1 over going into the fifth hole when he hit a 3-iron onto the par-5 and sunk a long putt for eagle. He would go on to make four more birdies, then finished with a string of pars on the difficult final holes at Carnoustie.

“If I can keep it in the fairway, I feel like I can control my golf ball around the green,” he said. “The greens are calm, and around the greens are flat. I feel like any time I’m around the green I’m going to make 4 or par at the worst. So that’s been my game plan.”

Kisner, who is staying with Spieth and several other players at a house near the course, said they have been enjoying nightly soccer matches in the yard. But he was up early for his morning tee time, and took advantage of the benign conditions.

“You’re always trying to get it in and get it in as low as you can because you never know what the next day is going to have,” Kisner said of the conditions.

Danny Willett, who hasn’t had a victory since surprisingly winning the Masters in 2016, shot a 69 and was three shots back. Phil Mickelson opened with a 73, while Tiger Woods had an afternoon tee time.
