Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 11
We're getting into the conspiracy thriller of this arc.
Last chapter, I went over the general timeline of events that have happened since chapter 8 and showed roughly 3 weeks have passed since then, with a little over two weeks being spent in chapter 10.
The main reason I did that is because this chapter opens with a followup to the fight between Scar and Gluttony. Roy's squad is inspecting the rubble and found Scar's bloodied jacket. Meanwhile, Lust and Gluttony confirm they failed to kill Scar and Lust is going back to Central.
This scene would have to have taken place about two weeks before everything else in the chapter. This would also mean Lust has been in Central for about as long. As long as no other major events happen in East City, we can assume Roy's group has been dealing with the rubble over those two weeks and the next time we see Roy, the timeline will have reconverged.
Maria and Danny were constantly whispering to each other last chapter and it's nice to see someone call them out on it.
Ed and Al seem ready to give up their journey after finding out what is required to make a Philosopher's Stone. They wouldn't willingly condemn someone in order to fix their own mistakes. Ed was about to ask Al something but they're interrupted by Alex Louis Armstrong. With a little inspiration from Armstrong, they're back on their feet to try finding the truth within the truth Dr. Marcoh mentioned.
We got a map, this time of Central, and once again, it's not useful for gleaning any information about the city layout. At least there's a park.
Tumblr media
Once again, Maria Ross and Danny Brosh are getting sucked into things way above what they signed up for. They were assigned to be bodyguards and now they're privy to a potential conspiracy that the research department was performing human experiments.
Brigadier General Basque Grand, who Scar killed, was in charge of the Research Department. Armstrong mentions he was killed a few days ago. "A few" is a highly subjective unit but I'd say greater than three weeks is more than a few days.
A couple moments throughout the last section of the chapter show there are some conveniences to the Elrics' bodies. They can handle barbwire without issue, Ed can take otherwise lethal hits if they strike his automail, and being short lets you crawl through vents easier. Ed almost admits to that last one.
Tumblr media
And then we find out there's enough evidence the condemned research lab is still in use, including two guards who are former prisoners whose souls were bound to armor like Al. The seal Slicer has is different from Al's. Not sure if that means there was a different ritual involved or if the symbols are dependent on something to do with the material the soul is bound to or not. I don't know enough about Alchemy and occult symbology to comment further.

Spoiler Discussion
I'm honestly disappointed in the lack of detail in the map. I was hoping we'd see all five labs in relation to one another cause it turns out they're laid out in a pentagram formation which is used late in the series to capture the Human Sacrifices.
Also, I wonder if Brigadier General Grand was part of the conspiracy or not. The one time we see him in the Ishbalan War, he seemed eager to end it ASAP. Since the bloodshed was necessary for Father's plan, trying to stop the war goes counter to it. There is always a possibility he was aware of the Philosopher's Stone research without knowing the grand conspiracy at large or maybe he was completely in the dark. We'll never know.
Ed wanted to ask Al if Al blames him for being trapped in that armor. Maybe if Armstrong hadn't barged in at that moment, and Ed got to ask, and Al said no; then maybe Ed would have asked if they should just give up on their journey then and there.

When I started my re-watch of Brotherhood, there was one plot point early on that I was very interested to revisit. Why? Because it was the one part I actively disliked about the show my first time through, and now I was approaching it again with a fresh perspective and additional context from the 03 version. Would I still feel the same, or would I have grown to appreciate it more?
I’m talking, of course, about this line here:
“Are you sure you’re not a puppet created by your so-called brother?”
The first time I watched Brotherhood, I hated the little one-and-a-half episode sulk Al goes into after Barry the Chopper plants that particular seed of doubt in his brain. It seemed so perfunctory, rushed, and- dare I say it- lazy. I didn’t understand how Al could even begin to believe the homicidal, cleaver-wielding lunatic. And the execution of his pathos was really sloppy: it was literally just several scenes of his sulking alone while that exact same line repeats in his head over. And over. And over. And over until I wanted to reach through the screen, grab his stupid helmet, and yell at him to stop remembering the exact same 13 words time and time again like he was going to find a new meaning in them if he just listened to it enough.
Yet remarkably, when I came to this same bit in 03, I actually thought it worked really well. Once again, this is another major spot where 03′s willingness to adapt and change things really worked in its favor. Because when we get to this point in 03, we’ve been through so many more adventures than the piddly little 7 episodes of build-up in Brotherhood. We’ve seen the brothers through thick and thin, through stories and plot threads light and dark, part of the original manga and not. And most importantly, so many of those stories were explicitly about adressing the guilt Ed feels about hurting his brother in this way and the pain that Al has been trying to repress for his brother’s sake. So going into Barry’s big lie, we’ve got oodles of context into the specific ways the brothers feel about the other’s part in their situation, and you’re able to see why Al might fall for a trick like that. It also helps that when Al is struggling with the potential veracity of Barry’s words, he isn’t just repeating the same phrase over and over again in his head; he’s remembering a lot of things the murderer said, pouring his brain over a million different tracks of thought to try and come to a conclusion before he realizes he can’t be sure that he was ever real just from his own knowledge. It’s legitimately powerful.
And yeah, sadly, Brotherhood’s handling of the material hasn’t gotten much better upon re-watch. There’s just not enough build-up for Al’s confusion to be believable, and the look into his though process isn’t complex enough to warrant the level of angst on display. And that sucks, because there are still good elements to it. Literally everything about Winry’s tearful admonishment of Al once the damage is done can go toe to toe with 03′s version any day, and might even surpass it in some respects. But in the end, it’s a black mark the show really could’ve done without so early on.
Thankfully, this is the last real bit of criticism I’ll have for Brotherhood’s story at least for a long time. Because from here on out, the plot starts unspooling in earnest and things get really crazy. And I’ll see you all for the opening gunshot... next time.

Warning: Spoilers for S4E11 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Hello lovelies! Welcome back to Bianca Spills the Tea! I’m your host Bianca, and today I’ll be discussing my thoughts on the episode mentioned above. Let’s get to it!
- I am very glad that they didn’t make Maya’s bisexuality just a quick mention in S1. I know that we’re now only up to two quick mentions, but that’s more than some shows ever did in their whole run.
- Oh, sweet, sad Nathaniel. Your time will come, honey.
- Paula careening in on a rolly desk chair in when she hears something that is under her hyperfixation is ME
- You know, I feel absolutely terrible saying this, but sometimes Nathaniel looks like a shark. Like sometimes he’s attractive and sometimes the camera angle makes him look like a goddamn shark.
- Also when he went and looked in the mirror and was like “Oh I look HORRIBLE” is a mood and also me when I have wet hair and forgot to take off my mascara
- ^^ And what is that, anyway? A fever dream?
- “Hot diggity, BASKETBALL!” My new catchphrase honestly
- I know that Nathaniel is supposed to be “ugly” now or whatever but I’m actually into the whole curly hair and glasses thing (not the outfit, but can we please get Nathaniel in a suit with that hair and those glasses bc I am loving it)
- Why does Bert look like he stepped straight of The Matrix or something lmao
- “The only two things I care about in this world are sports and your love life” OK BUT WHY IS THAT CHARLES BOYLE TO JAKE AND AMY
- Okay they can shut the fuck up Rachel Bloom was ALREADY unrealistically gorgeous without the hair extensions
- “I hate that guy as if I had personal beef with him” why is that me @ half my school
- AGAIN, ESTHER POVITSKY IS ALREADY BEAUTIFUL STOP WITH THAT SHIT (yes I know they’re making fun of romantic comedies but like,,, she doesn’t need to try HARDER)
-WHERE IS THAT NATHANIEL/MAYA CRACK FIC WHERE SHE WANTS TO DO COCAINE BECAUSE I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE AUTHOR’S REACTION TO THIS EPISODE
-This show’s self awareness is everything (I think I’ve said that before but I’ll say it again). All of the tropes they call out are spot-on.
- THE SHOPPING SCENE INTRO WITH LIKE NEW YORK AND PARIS AND SOMEWHERE ELSE I’M W H E E Z I N G
- MAYA SWEETIE YOU LOOK ADORABLE IN THAT DRESS ILY
- ^^ and I don’t know if this was a coincidence or not but it definitely resemble’s Rebecca’s from the season 1 album cover
- DID THEY LEGIT PUT A FUCKING SNAPCHAT FILTER OVER MARCY’S VOICE LMAO
- Okay Josh is actually really funny here
- Oh they just CAME for High School Musical
- “Oh yeah, my boat that’s called The Greg.” WHY IS THAT SO FUNNY
- I thought the client was going to be Greg for his restaurant opening but I was wrong
- The Nathaniel/Maya working montage was actually super cute!! I mean, obviously it was very cliché, but other than that it was cute and I would love to see them as friends.
- Low cut pinstripe suit? Esmé Squalor better watch her back
- GEORGE BLURTING OUT RANDOM SPORTS I’M HOWLING
- “You’re short, I’m tall.” Honey, Rachel Bloom is 5′3″
- IT WAS A DREAM I CALLED IT
- I laughed OUT LOUD when Nathaniel said “you look great in magenta dresses”
- THE SECURITY GUARD
- Okay I’m actually very proud of Nathaniel. As much as it hurts me to see him let go (at least for the time being), it was the right thing to do. Good job, honey.

I don't know what anyone involved in this is going on to do next, but I would watch 12 seasons of a one-person show with any member of the cast, to say nothing of the writers (I really am going to have to get around to watching The Devil Wears Prada)
