Daniel Grimaldi: Actor, Scholar & Scientist
Daniel Grimaldi was born in 1946 and is an American actor and mathematics professor who is best known for his roles as twins Philly and Patsy Parisi on the award winning HBO television series The Sopranos.
While researching this piece, I wasn’t sure if all the dates synched up over on the Forever Fordham site? If what I read was true, he started Fordham at an age when most of us were sophomores in high school.
Entered Fordham University at 16 Years of Age
“I attended Xaverian High School in Brooklyn.” The obviously very bright, ambitious powerhouse explained, “I was sixteen when I graduated. I received several scholarships
(including) a full one to Fordham. Many of my classmates were going.”
He was a Screen Actors Guild award winner, in 2008, for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for The Sopranos. He opened up about his college experiences at the Rose Hill Bronx campus by saying: “I commuted by train. One hour and forty five minutes each way. In my sophomore and junior year a friend drove. But often I would have to take the train because our schedules did not jell. In senior year I used my father's car,” added the 5 foot-4 inch dedicated alumni. “My family couldn't afford the room & board. One of the few regrets I have in life is not living on campus.”
Don’t Go In The House!
His first break came in 1979 as the star of the above titled independent horror film. It is described as “A young man who was driven mad by the death of his abusive mother now stalks young women with a flamethrower.”
Note: I’ve watched, and yes it is as nasty as it sounds. If you are interested, here is the YouTube link-be careful: r. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxmz1vjCOk4&t=6s
Bell Laboratories Scientist
Doctor Daniel Grimaldi went on to complete a Master of Science in Operations Research from NYU and a PhD in Data Processing from City University of New York. That early IMDb.com credit above was in 1979. It sounded like those 13 years between might have been filled with working on your Master's degree and PhD? Turns out there was more to his development before being bit-by-the-acting-bug.
“Acting was not a thought. It just popped into my mind when I worked at Bell Labs as a member of technical staff in computer graphics.” I looked up archived copies of the University newspapers (The Ram) and did NOT see any productions that mentioned his name. It turns out he didn’t perform in any collegiate shows/plays. He added, “I went to study with Lee Strasberg (starting) in 1970.”
(aveleyman.com)
Let’s Get To The Quote: “It won’t be cinematic.”
For those who haven’t seen the episode, on The Sopranos, from all those years ago-let me set the scene. New Jersey Mob Boss Tony Soprano has one of his many adulterous love affairs. This time he meets Gloria. Who is pretty, a successful Mercedes Car sales rep and a bit of a world traveler. The two meet in the waiting of the mutual psychiatrist, accidentally due to a scheduling mix-up. After a point, Tony wants to end it. Gloria not only wants to be part of the gangster’s life she even goes so far as to make contact with his wife. (Oh girlfriend, you can do so much better.)
He sends Patsy Parisi, our boy Dan-Class of ‘66-to scare her away while ostensibly test driving a car. Away from the protection of her suburban New Jersey dealership, he pulls over: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GCQnTPF4_o
Note: Between now and posting of this article I can’t afford to have YouTube delete this one. So, basically he pulls out a gun and points it at her. Warns her to distance herself from Soprano and his family or she will be dead; by his hand. No ancient Greek tragedy or retired NFL Quarterback stuff for her to go on to the next world on.
Got To Have A Side-Hustle
I didn’t get a definitive answer, from the Assistant Professor Mathematics & Computer Science at Kingsborough Community College, in Brooklyn, when I asked if “It Won’t Be Cinematic”will be on your tombstone? But I did get a smile.
Can We Make It A Point to Carry His Name Forward?
Here is a post from the 78 year old Fordham Alumni; His request on the Instagram Account where you can follow him too.

Altri riconoscimenti sono andati a Luciano Spalletti, miglior allenatore Serie A maschile; Alessandro Spugna, miglior allenatore Serie A femminile; e Daniele Orsato, miglior arbitro. I knew this was going to be good when you posted 🤣.
I don’t think I’ve been so engaged and nervous since Barbara. (The train crash was a different thing altogether) It is definitely the first time I’ve cried in a long time.
I think this was a tribute to the older actors who turn in week after week to fill in and support the rest of the cast through that week’s episode.
Cliff Parisi and Annabelle Apsion have done if for years and now joined by Georgie Glen.
Because their characters are always reacting and helping to move the plot along they are not often given a lot of depth. They are frequently used for comic relief.
Episode 3 rewarded that. It was like Heidi said “thanks for all you do, so here you go, this one is yours. Act your bloody socks off!”
And they did!
Very apt too Phyllis was the lead nurse in the ONE guest story. Another compliment only one other main story.
And of course it had to be SMJ that broke this old swinging brick 💔
Daniel Laurie showed he can do more than just make tea in a crisis too!
I did think Cyril would have been there for both Fred and Reggie, but maybe him being off on his course wasn’t a bad thing, letting Millicent step up.
(Can we not talk about the settee, we are having such a lovely time)
I never post but WOW! I can finally breathe.
Our older characters were amazing. Vi and Millicifent had amazing roles this week as well are Fred.
#spoilers for CtM series 13 ep 3#my icon would have become a memorial#really worried about auld jenny at the end#thought we might need a bed for her

Ears
Ears [trailer]
This tragicomedy begins when a man wakes up with a low ringing sound in his ears and discovers a cryptic note on his fridge "Your friend Luigi has died. P.S. I took the car."
Tragic, maybe. But I found it difficult to find things that are really funny. In the first half I mainly witnessed a day in the life of a very passive, downbeat looking guy who meets people who are mostly annoying.
It gets more poignant in the second half, ending with a life changing realisation by the protagonist. Which I found hard to accept. It probably would've been easier if I had been better prepared for such a "low-key" film.
The street art was cool.

CtM Thursday Thoughts
Call the Midwife Unite--Episode 6x05
Buckles and Broadcast Issues
Hello Nonnatuns! Well, that was an interesting edition of CtM Unite this week! It was great to hear from Cliff Parisi (Fred), Annabelle Apsion (Violet), as well as Heidi again, this time, even despite the frequent technical difficulties! It was also great to revisit this memorable episode. More thoughts follow:
First, some thoughts about the episode:
It’s weird watching them out of the context of the series sometimes, since episodes like this have stories that continue in other episodes. I know what happens to Sister Mary Cynthia and the Turners, for instance, but watching this episode like this makes me almost want to rewatch the next one, just to get closure. I’m guessing this might spur a more comprehensive rewatch for some fans, and since so many of us are confined to our homes at the moment, it seems like a good use of free time!
The introduction to Reggie was very well done. In just a few scenes, the episode established introduced us to Reggie’s mum, showed us Reggie’s home life, and established Fred as the familial connection before showing Ivy’s sudden death and the necessity for Reggie to stay with the Buckles. The development of Violet’s relationship with Reggie was also built up especially well.
I still miss Barbara! I know this is a recurring mention for me, but of all the deaths and exits on the show, for some reason Barbara’s affected me the most. She was so young and hopeful, and seeing her that way knowing what’s going to happen just reminds me more of how sad her death will be. That said, I still voted for episode 7x08 for next week, because it’s a great episode and deals with its subjects particularly well.
Loved the Turner moments! It’s fun seeing their new house for the first time, now knowing what the inside will look like starting in series 7. A 60s dream house for my OTP!
Val is such a great addition to the show! Loved seeing how she bonded with the other nurses so quickly.
I noticed the theming a bit more watching it this time--flowers vs. “weeds”, parents letting their children grow and “leave the nest”, accepting change, etc.
Now, some thoughts on the after-show:
This was a weird week, in terms of technical issues! It was great to see everyone involved--Annabelle, Cliff, and a special message from Daniel Laurie (Reggie) as well. A lot of the time, though, because the others kept getting dropped out of the call, it ended up being “The Heidi Show”. That was all right because Heidi handled situation so well, reading questions on the live feed and answering them with a lot of depth and detail. The quick cameo from Stephen was also fun. It was sad to see everyone coming back one by one and then freezing up again, and Annabelle and Cliff didn’t get to say as much as they could have said without the tech problems, but it was nice to hear what they did get to say, and again, to hear so much from Heidi.
I liked hearing about how Vanessa Redgrave records the voiceovers for the show, and how it’s usually in a studio in London, but she’s also recorded them from other locations (New York, at least). Also, it was interesting to learn that Heidi writes all of the voiceovers, even on episodes written by others.
I feel bad correcting Heidi, but Cliff has missed a few episodes (most recently, 9x05). The only two original cast members who have never missed an episode are Jenny Agutter and Laura Main. Heidi has written so many scripts and doesn’t seem to have as much direct involvement with day-to-day filming, from what she has said, so it makes sense that she doesn’t remember every detail.
The bits about casting Annabelle were interesting. I knew she had been in another show Heidi had written for, but didn’t know that Ann Tricklebank had suggested Annabelle for the role of Violet. I love hearing these types of behind-the-scenes stories.
Even with the technical issues, I think these after-show chats with the cast and team are incredible! It’s so great to hear all these insights from the makers of the show--actors and Heidi herself. I’ve read a lot of interviews and articles about this show, but there’s always more to learn, from the people who know it first-hand! I hope these CtM Unite events continue for a while.
I know Heidi answered a question about how long the show is going to go, but I still find myself wondering that, and also when they will be able to resume filming, when series 10 will be able to air, etc.
I’m looking forward to finding out what episode wins the voting for next week, and who the after-show stars will be. I have a theory that they pick the candidates based on who they want to have on the after-show (or who is available for that week), so I’m wondering if Leonie Elliott will be there next week, since all the episodes feature her, and maybe Jennifer Kirby as well? We’ll see!
So, Nonnatuns, what do you think? Any new insights into the episode? What about the after-show? Also, what episode did you vote for for next week? Any guesses for who will be on the after-show?
Also, I want to add a quick reminder that if you missed the after-show live stream for any reason, you can catch up on the CtM Facebook page!
Next week, more thoughts! Stay tuned!
