“QUEER”

First of all, let’s clear up a common misconception. Queer does not just mean gay. It’s an umbrella term for an identity which deviates from society’s perceived norm: heterosexual, or straight. Queer can refer to sexualities — gay, bisexual, pansexual, — or it can refer to being gender-queer; i.e, any label that deviates from the perceived gender norm: the binaries, male and female.

“Queer” is a reclaimed slur.

If you do not fall under the umbrella of queerness, it is safe to assume that you cannot use it. At all.

I am bisexual.

This means I experience attraction to plural genders. Pansexual also works fine. For the difference between bisexual and pansexual — see here:

Being bisexual isn’t easy. I went through similar hardships to gay women: I experienced attraction to women and was scared of what this meant for me, in such an oppressively homophobic society.

I am not saying being bisexual is harder than being gay, nor the inverse. But my experiences are distinctly bisexual, not gay.

Without further ado, here are the 3 things I’ve found to be the hardest about being queer, but not gay (enough).

#1: Finding My Place

Or, not being queer enough

I always knew I wasn’t straight, but I didn’t know what I was. Up until recently, I was still questioning. This didn’t feel enough to join groups or conversations with LGBT+ folk, let alone go to pride. Was I even LGBT if I was never L, G, B, or T?

I am still yet to attend a pride, even though I identify (fairly confidently) as bisexual. I am in a relationship with a man. This is (problematically) known as a “straight-passing relationship” and makes me feel even more undeserving of a place at pride.

This has been upsetting to me at times. But for others, it can be outright devastating. Growing up and needing support, but feeling like you’re ‘not gay enough’ to ask for it? So many young people are being left alone and afraid. Finding others like you is vital to figuring out who you are. Likewise, finding spaces which are safe and inclusive is vital for anyone, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity. A friend of mine happens to be a transgender man, and he summed up the issue perfectly:

“One thing that I keep noticing is how all hangout spots are “gay bars”, or (far less common) “lesbian bars”. I’m a straight man, so I don’t feel like I’m supposed to be there, but hanging out at regular bars is still too much of a gamble, so I don’t really have anywhere to go.”

It goes without saying that gay folk aren’t always safe in these spaces, as seen by the homophobic attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, in 2016. Bigotry hurts the entire LGBT+ community. Bigotry doesn’t stop to ask whether you identify as gay or otherwise queer before it pulls the trigger.

But the LGBT+ community itself is much more welcoming to those who “pick a side” and just come out as gay, already. The infighting is inexplicable when one looks to attacks such as that in Orlando: bigots don’t care which letter you are in the acronym. So why does gatekeeping exist when we need to be strong in the face of intolerance when fragmentation only makes us weaker? Who are we helping by continuing to exclude identities from the discussion?

#2: Myths and Misconceptions

Well, it stands to reason that if bisexuals are what they seem in TV and movies, why would anyone want to make them feel included? They’re “greedy” and inauthentic. They’re attention-seeking, not to mention their propensity for threesomes. Now, I haven’t been in a wild orgy yet, but it seems like it will only be a matter of time before I follow my natural path.

Straight men, in particular, need to own up to their assumption that bisexual women are down for a threesome. The thing is, we are. But not with you, you big ASSUMER.

Infidelity

All jokes aside, the stereotyping of bisexuals is not only hurtful, but leads to difficulties finding and maintaining relationships.

As I came to terms with my bisexuality, I also had to accept that I might never be fully trusted by my partner, regardless of their gender or sexuality. I was shocked when my partner reacted to my coming out with the equivalent of a shrug — so much so, that I burst into tears of gratitude that my soul-bearing moment hadn’t been met with slut-shaming or assumptions of disloyalty. Nothing has changed. If anything, our bond is even stronger for me having been more authentic after coming out.

But cruelty came from elsewhere: when I came out, I was told that my partner was to be pitied, either because I’m gay and in denial, or bound to cheat on him. The main consequence of such attitudes has been the crippling fear of coming out to my partner. It saddens me that I felt so relieved when he accepted me for being who I am, and loving him just the same as I always have.

This outcome is not the case for many couples, with straight folk worried that their bisexual partner will realise they’re gay and just leave them. This fear of abandonment comes from a place of ignorance. When the media presents bisexuality as a steppingstone on the way to “picking a team”, it’s no wonder that people struggle to trust their queer partners.

Other Queer Myths

The myth that all trans folk medically transition invalidates those who choose not to do so, and let’s not forget the ignorant jeers that it's all just a mental illness. Asexual folk battle the stereotype that they can never have a relationship and shall forever remain a virgin (because what an awful thing that would be, right?) And pansexuals… well, at the lighter end, they’re asked if they have sex with cooking utensils. But often, they’re erased as irrelevant because “we already have the label bisexual”.

This brings us onto the third and final difficulty that comes with queer folk who aren’t easily categorizable as gay: erasure.

#3: Erasure

Erasure refers to the denial of an identity’s existence or its validity as a label.

Non-binary folk face ongoing and loud claims that they simply do not exist. This is despite the historical and scientific evidence to the contrary. Plus, the most important evidence — them, existing. Asexual folk are told they simply have not found the right person yet, or that they are just afraid of sex. Demi-sexual folk are told “everyone feels like that, unless they’re just sleeping around!”. And bisexuals are dismissed as simply being in denial that they’re gay.

Monosexuality & The Gender Binary

Our culture is so built on monosexuality (being solely attracted to one gender — for instance, gay or straight). Monosexuality is reinforced through everything from marriage to dating apps, the media to what we teach in schools. People cannot fathom that someone might want to experience more than one gender in their lifetime.

The binary models of sex and gender are also deeply ingrained. These rigid belief systems combined are to blame for our inability to accept that bisexuals do not need to “pick a side”. I was paralysed by fear for 17 years because I found girls attractive and that might mean I’m gay, because bisexuals are just gays who haven’t realised they’re gay yet.

Bierasure

Bierasure is dangerous, firstly because it leads a child to have to internalise both biphobia and homophobia. For instance, I had to work through being taught to hate gayness, whilst being taught that any attraction to non-male genders made me gay.

Women were cute, and so I was gay, and this meant I was disgusting.

My own mother told me this. She also told me that something has “gone wrong in the womb” for a child to be gay. (Well, Mum, I’ve got some bad news about your womb!)And she, like any bigot, extended this theory to anyone who experiences same-sex attractions — anyone queer. This is another reason why bi-erasure is perilous. Whether you’re a gay, cis-male or a demi-bisexual, trans woman… if your parents will kick you out for being gay, they will likely kick you out for being any sort of queer.

If we deny the bigotry that bisexuals undergo, we will continue to suffer. It won’t just go away. It will fester, with bisexuals having no one they can go to who believes them. And thus:

Erasure Kills

Bullying and suicide rates of queer-but-not-gay people continue to sky-rocket. We must direct funding, support and compassion to every queer individual, as they are all vulnerable to discrimination and bullying. The problem is being left to fester. This is in part because bigots treat all queer labels as just ‘gay’, deeming them equally unworthy. This is how far erasure can go.

Conclusion

Earlier on, I stated that my experiences are distinctly bisexual. The same applies to any queer identity.

Emphasising our differing paths and struggles is important to avoid the aforementioned erasure of already less visible groups. But this does not mean that the LGBT+ community should be fragmented by these differences.

If we can unite in our hope to live authentically and love freely, we will be stronger against bigotry. We are fighting enough intolerance from without: there is no need to create more from within.

So out of everything, what’s the hardest part about being bisexual?

It’s the fact that nobody knows it’s this hard.

Not long after they meet, Bruce asks Clark to marry him and Clark moves into a mansion that has more ghosts than it has people.

So I couldn’t find more AUs for this list, I was about to quit looking and yesterday I ran into this one and it gave me so much hope that there might be more out there (part 3?maybe?) I think of this as Ghost Whisperer Clark

Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne, a seemingly irresponsible and eccentric duke, remains largely unconcerned about these atrocities. The Batman, however, has taken special interest, and spends his nights relentlessly hunting the new murderer at large. The paths of these men will converge as the body count begins to rise, and their investigations and growing affections will cement their bond, intertwining their fates with that of the most notorious murderer in all of England.

OKaaaay this is one of the exceptions, Bruce is Batman but it’s a different century and Clark is powerless, I think it compensates. Usually I prefer when they’re both “capeless” but this was such a fun read.

So I want to point out how good this fic is. I hate sad and this story has a lot of grief and I felt it was very grounded on its depictions of feelings. I tend to avoid this type of fics buuuuut this was so good. I couldn’t stop reading even if the grief got to me. It’s very wholesome and does have a satisfying ending.

I made it as a requirement for my high school thesis, so while the art there is definitely a representation of my past, I still stand by the message I was trying to send. I hope to eventually branch out this series in a form of a webcomic of sorts, for people who can’t afford to purchase my e-book for financial reasons. I often post and retweet adult animation, so I’d say tread carefully if you’re a minor. I just find it more fun to expound on the positives of my favorite things. I also don’t take everything seriously.

I think mid-May will mark 9 months since my first stage of rff phalloplasty with dr. mang chen of brownstein and crane surgical services. i can’t say enough positives about dr. chen and his microsurgery team, but in particular dr brian parrett. I had my surgery with the “new” microsurgeons and am very pleased with the aesthetics of my new member, for those anxious about this “new” team.

I will hopefully return to post on recovery and my arm scar, as many seem to be curious about all of that – and understandably so; however, this post is focused upon “hooking up” or “sexual encounters” in my experience being post-op downstairs.

Proceed with caution: I will use several terms that may make some uncomfortable though I do so as to not cause any confusion or greyness on what I am speaking of.

So firstly, what’s up, down there? I had a vaginectomy so there is no longer a vaginal opening. My junk that grew on hormones is buried in the base of my dick. I can feel it near my scrotum as well as in the base. I could orgasm since week 5 with sensations felt in this area. I had glansplasty (the creation of a defined head) in late feb. of 2017. I do have a scrotum but no testicular implants. The scrotum looks ideal (for me personally, folks) in that it resembles a cisgender male’s scrotum. I do plan to get testicular implants in September. So in summary: dick, ball sac, no erections naturally, no balls inside my ball sac. Nothing really “different” about what comprises my anatomy down there.

I had experienced a breakup shortly before going into phallo. My ex accompanied me to my surgery still and made a more final break in the final days of our stay in the Bay (san francisco area of California). We have not been intimate since my recovery. Since being cleared for sexual activities, I realized I was hit with an IMMENSE freedom. I did some dangerous things where I’d drink ridiculous amounts and end up not remembering who I came home with, who was with me when I woke up. It just felt good to be embraced and recognized as an ordinary gay man. It felt amazing to do all types of things now that I’m physically existing in a way that makes sense to myself, I wanted to catch up in a way, on all these adventures of knowing myself through these sexual undertakings.

Just like being pre-op, my mileage varied regarding who was down to date/mess around and that hasn’t changed. What has changed is my confidence, so more folks end up YES rather than NO. It is apparent I have this sense of knowing myself and not hesitating to meet this person or that person on a sexual level and allow stuff to happen. I felt so much more shy and ashamed pre-op. It was if I didn’t have the language to participate in conversation pre-op, whereas now I have mastery of the vocabulary, I’m armed with a dictionary and personality to maintain conversation. If you’re operating fine with your junk that is untouched by surgery, I say keep it. Bc these surgeries have recoveries that are really NO FUCKING JOKE. While I do compare my junk to that of other men’s (ie my comment about the sac CLOSELY resembling that of cisgender males), that kind of thinking is far from my mind when getting sexual with others, especially men. It is an awesome result compared to my pre-op junk; however, for those considering and those post-op can likely agree, it isn’t the dick of a cisgender male and never will be. It has its downsides if compared besides a cisgender male’s dick but because I was struggling so severely with my pre-op junk, I absolutely love my dick. It’s been a gift of life. Not because the hookups, bc you will always get rejection regardless of what you’re packing…but because my confidence, knowing and coming into myself now that my junk matches that which I’ve known and I’ve needed is finally a reality.

The moment the boy was old enough to stir a horse by himself was the moment his parents started losing him from sight for hours and hours as he rushed into the forest, the lake, or the plains just to explore. That thirst for adventure hasn’t dimmed despite the years that have passed, and the man still finds himself surprised with every new place he visits.

[ + ] Curious – Apart from his adventurous heart, Gonzalo’s mind has always been bright and sharp. He doesn’t fear magic like many in the south and even less the great creatures that plague the forests and mountains. Everything is a learning experience in his eyes, and like a child, his eyes always light up at the sight of a big and powerful beast or a mage’s work. Gonzalo always questions everything, reads a lot, and keeps an open mind to the unknown.

[ + ] Loyal – The Guild means everything to Gonzalo. He considers the warriors his brothers and would give up his own life for them without thinking twice. He never doubts them, which is why when Blademaster Dorn sent him to join the Wardens, he went willingly and without complaint. Now, he can see the importance of the Wardens and their responsibility to Eldris, so he puts the same dedication and trust in everyone who joins, treating them as brothers and protecting them with his own life.

[ + ] Genuine – Many join the Guild for the fame and respect the title entails, but not Gonzalo. He never cared for fame or power, two things that simply landed on his lap because unlike many others, he sought the greater good with no hidden agendas. Gonzalo has become someone people look up to; a man who breaks all fights in their ranks and mediates solutions with kindness and understanding of both parties. He’s always true to his word and reliable whenever a problem arises. He has never broken a promise and he’s not about to start.

[ - ] Hot-Headed – Gonzalo has no patience for stupidity, rudeness, or cruelty and he is quick to take to arms or start a fight to defend what he believes is right. He’s a kind and fair man, which means he rarely accuses anyone without just cause, but injustice doesn’t sit right with him, and he’s not one to stand idly by when he is able to do something to change an unfair situation. He’s patient, but people have learned not to test his limits. He’s never lost a fight thus far, after all.

[ - ] Naive – Despite his bright mind, Gonzalo has always been quite naive when it comes to trusting others. He believes in humanity, good hearts, and good deeds, so it isn’t strange to find him giving his money away on the streets or doing favors for those who seem distressed. He has always been very trusting, and even though he knows there are bad people in the world, he refuses to fall into cynicism, and doubt every person he comes across.

[ - ] Stubborn – “Stubborn as a mule,” his mother would call him, because changing Gonzalo’s mind has never been an easy task. He believes in authority and trusts orders given by those he respects, but when he believes something is right, be it religion, tactics or even the simplest things, it will take a good argument to make him doubt himself or his beliefs. Like every good soldier, he never disobeys, but that doesn’t mean he has to agree with the orders given.

[ - ] Apprehensive – If anything could possibly go wrong, Gonzalo has probably thought about it twice already. He knows his flaws and understands he trusts people too easily, which is why he’s so apprehensive and tense when it comes to any road set before him, always worried about those around him and fretting over any impending dangers that may lie ahead. Despite this, he isn’t a grim man at all. Most of the time he behaves quite charmingly, but he loves too deeply and protecting those he cares about is always on his mind.

C H A R A C T E R - B A C K G R O U N D

History:

Flying feet on fields of grass, galloping hooves, and yapping dogs at his ankles were the sounds of Gonzalo’s childhood. His family lived in a small town on the outskirts of Vessia, where his father raised the best war horses in all of Eldris; loyal and brave just like their horse master, and fit to endure the burning sun of the south and the freezing cold of the north. Gonzalo, his only son, was a wild little thing since birth, running before he could speak and always meddling in everyone’s business. Everyone in town adored the charming young boy, as well as the many pets that would follow him around.

His childhood was filled with big adventure and small indulgences. His family wasn’t particularly rich, but the fertile land provided food fit for kings, rich in taste and bright in color, and large expanses of land to explore. Gonzalo spent hours and hours on the back of a horse, feeling the steady rhythm of its hooves hitting the ground as he rode around Varthal, the warm wind blowing against his face. Sometimes, it made Gonzalo wonder what it would be like to fly.

It was no surprise that the boy took to a sword with incredible ease, feeling its weight like an extension of his arm as he wielded his newly acquired companion with the natural talent the Vartheli seemed to posses. It was the final piece that completed the boy and turned him into a man; a young man with a brave heart that beat wild and strong, aching to find his place in the world.

And so Gonzalo started searching. Adventures turned into long journeys, down to the end of the continent or up into the forests and mountains. It was during one of these journeys that he met a group of men, Warriors of the Arms Guild, fighting an imposing beast: a gryphon. He rushed to their aid, jumping from his mount to the beast’s back and landing the final blow to its neck. Once on the ground, the men stood quietly, watching him with curious eyes and smiles brightening, as they seemed to have a silent conversation, their heads nodding their agreement.

He received an invitation to join them the next day.

The Arms Guild was more than a group of heroes protecting people from harm. They were a brotherhood, a family that took Gonzalo in and embraced him like one of their own. He trained, bled, and fought, years passing by as he earned his position and title as Blademaster Dorn’s right hand. He was respected and trusted but never feared. Gonzalo found his place in the world among its heroes and even though his heart never stopped longing for adventure, for that great desire to fly, he knew where he belonged: protecting the people he loved.

Adventure, of course, sometimes came at a great price. A lesson he learned in one of his many journeys to the north. They were traveling through the Spine Mountains, shivering from the cold when Gonzalo saw it: a great dragon, black as the night, flying over them. It was the greatest moment of his life, the mere sight of the embodiment of such ancient power making all his journeys worth the wait. He ached to follow it, to see where it would lead them, but bandits took their moment of distraction to their advantage and ambushed them.

Only Gonzalo survived.

Life became simpler after that. He returned to the Guild to heal his wounds and continue with his task. Years passed and the persistent rumors of the members of the Guild wanting him to be their future Blademaster never worried Gonzalo until the day Blademaster Dorn approached him and ordered him to join this new faction that was forming to fight the threat of the Netherworld: The Wardens. He wanted to send their best warrior and rider to represent them, but Gonzalo only saw a new test, another step in his path to be what was needed of him so he simply bowed his head and accepted.

It was the start of a new adventure, and if the world needed a hero, that was exactly what he would be.

Reason for joining the Wardens:

Joining the Wardens was an easy decision; an order that Gonzalo followed blindly with a gracious nod of his head. Blademaster Dorn needed him there, their best warrior to face the greatest challenges, and since Gonzalo was his right hand and friend, he trusted the man to choose what was best for the Guild. It started out as a test, a way to prove himself once again among others, not those who already respected him and loved him like family, but a new group of heroes from every part of their land.

He couldn’t deny he was quite weary of it, like he would be of every new organization without an established code of honor, but it still felt like the right decision to make. It was a new adventure after all and despite how much Gonzalo loves the Guild and his brothers, the Wardens certainly sounded like an interesting thing to see.

Soon enough the Wardens became like a second family to him, a group of talented people fighting together to protect the world, an idea Gonzalo certainly agreed with. The South was blind to what was really happening; to the dangers looming over their heads and he would never run from those who needed his protection. He was no hero, but if their leaders were willing to ignore this, it would have to be their job to make sure peace returned to Eldris.

R O L E P L A Y - S A M P L E

Journeys through the Spine Mountains were always long, cold and tedious. They had been sent to Sorvim to mediate a religious disagreement that had been threatening the south for some time now and before things got worse, Blademaster Dorn had ordered them to pay the northern town a visit. Gonzalo liked the north, its colors so different from the brightness and the warmth of the south, but the green of its thick, imposing trees always made up for the colder tones that surrounded them now.

The rainy Targum Forest had turned into cold stone quite a few hours ago and now they found themselves right in the middle of the mountain range, the cloudy sky and softly falling snow making it difficult to tell how early or late it was. Still, they knew they had been riding for a long time, and it would soon be time to set up camp before the road got too slippery for the horses and the night too dangerous for all of them. Bandits often used that same passage, after all.

Gonzalo rode forward, leaving the rest of his brothers behind to scout the surroundings for a good place to camp when he saw it, or more accurately, felt it. The ground shook with a powerful roar, one that could only belong to some great, powerful beast, but not one he had encountered before; the sound foreign to his ears. He looked up, his eyes scanning his surroundings as his hand reached for his sword when he found the great creature flying overhead.

A dragon.

Its great wings flapped gracefully through the falling snow, as if it was used to the powerful winds that surrounded it. Gonzalo lost his breath, his eyes unable to lose sight of the menacing creature. No one had seen a dragon in ages. They were believed to be dormant until a dragonborn woke them and called them to their aid, but Gonzalo couldn’t remember the last time that happened. It felt like fate, like destiny to be the one witnessing such a moment and he couldn’t help but smile, brilliant and bright.

He turned his horse around quickly to inform the others, to show his brothers what he had just seen and ask them to follow the dragon to its nest when he heard it: screaming, slurs thrown carelessly and the sound of metal hitting metal. He galloped at full speed to reach them, to protect the people he had sworn and oath to, but when he reached them, only one of his brothers was still on his feet, surrounded by bandits.

The fight that followed was vicious, and impossible to win. They were outnumbered, and with one last blow the last remaining warrior was dead, and Gonzalo was down on his knees, bloodied and bruised at the hands of the bandits. He watched them, analyzed as he thrashed and snarled to break free from their grasp, but couldn’t.

“You’re coming with us,” the man said, and Gonzalo looked back up at the sky, feeling as if the world had stopped just for him, one last kindness so he could see the dragon fly away. He sighed and prayed to the Divine that they would deliver him from harm just once more so he could come back and follow the dragon’s path.

After that, everything went to black.

CHAPTER ONE

I shifted my weight on my feet and bit back a sigh. I should have known she was going to be persistent, but I was done playing nice for her when it was clear her son was so beaten down that he was too scared to make a move or even speak for himself. She was a tyrant and I wasn’t going to subject myself to her vile company anymore. As soon as I slipped inside my apartment I was going to delete all the dating apps I had on my phone.

“I have a dog and she’s leery around strangers.” That was partly true. I did have a dog, a massive blue pit bull that I rescued from a shelter just days before she was supposed to be put down. Dolly looked like a brute, but she was a sweetheart and had never met a human she didn’t want tummy scratches and love from. We were kind of kindred spirits in that way. I mean I didn’t need my ears scratched or my belly rubbed, but I was afflicted with the same pressing need to be liked and accepted by pretty much everyone I came in contact with. It was ingrained in me to at least try to make everyone a friend, and if they didn’t reciprocate my kindness it only forced me to try harder. Sometimes I hated that about myself, and sometimes it was my favorite personality trait because the men and women in my life weren’t the easiest nuts to crack. They all loved me and let me in because I’d refused to let them shut me out.

Well, all except for one man.

I couldn’t hold back my flinch when he crossed my mind because he had warned me about online dating from the get-go, and I hated that he was right about it. I also hated that he was the reason I was desperate to find a man . . . a man who wasn’t him . . . in the first place.

Mommie Dearest shook her head and clicked her tongue at me. “Joseph is allergic to dogs. Your pet will have to go as things progress between the two of you.”

I felt my eyes pop wide and the forced smile I had plastered on my face for the entire evening finally slipped away. I already knew she had a few screws loose, but she was taking her crazy to another level if she thought she could tell me to get rid of my dog or what to do with anything in my life.

I straightened my shoulders and tilted my chin up. It was a look that worked on the drunks and unruly college kids that I hustled out of the bar where I worked every night.

“That’s not going to be a problem because things are not progressing beyond my front door. Thank you both for dinner, but if you’ll excuse me I’m going to go inside and cuddle my dog and erase every online dating app there is.”

The woman narrowed her eyes and stepped around her son. The young man made a noise low in his throat and his eyes widened. I thought he was scared of his mom, but the closer I looked at him the more obvious it became that he was scared for me as the woman advanced. He reached out a hand to grab his mother’s elbow, but it fell away before making contact like he knew the repercussions for intervening would be severe and drastic.

“Listen here, you little . . .” I lifted my hand before she could throw at me whatever insulting word she was going to label me with. I don’t think the woman was used to anyone standing their ground with her because she gasped and fell back a step.

“Stop. I thought I was talking to Joseph. I thought he was a nice guy, maybe a little sheltered and awkward . . . but a nice guy. Obviously it wasn’t him running his dating profile and there was some other agenda here from the start. I’m well past the age where I need a mother’s approval or permission to date her son, so I’m going to go into my apartment and end this date before either side gets nasty.” I looked at the shell-shocked young man hovering behind his mother and mouthed good luck before turning my back on both of them and inserting my key into the door. Dolly barked loud and deep from the other side, which was both comforting and reassuring.

I turned the knob on the door and pushed into the apartment without looking back. Once the door was shut and my dog was happily rubbing against my legs, I tossed my head back and let out a sigh that felt like it was tied to my soul. I was tired, so tired.
