Lutávio's evolution and dance

Several interruptions, window entries, holding hands hidden in public, fencing classes, spy the other changing clothes ... there are several demonstrations of the development of Luccino and Otávio's relationship throughout Pride and Passion. But there's one thing that happens as their story unfolds that also accompanies the evolution of their love: dance.

The first mention of a dance between them is an idea from Randolfo's dream. It's interesting because, at that moment, their relationship was also an idea, since Otávio and Lídia's marriage had just failed and Luccino and Otávio were looking for a way to continue seeing each other. The dream was the way Otávio found to return to the workshop and talk about the relationship that was emerging, even if between the lines.

In the dream, they dance among the other couples in the soap opera without any kind of objection. It seems like an ideal context for two men who feared being rejected by society for loving each other, especially because it wasn't imagined by them, but by Randolfo. Is like the universe telling to them move foward.

The second situation involving dance is the first event that Luccino and Otávio go together: the wedding of Ernesto and Emma. They watch the other couples dance and look at each other, as if they want to do the same. The closest they can get is when Ernesto orders a tarantella (typical Italian dance). 

They are so close that Niccoleta, Luccino's mother, sees them and invites Otávio to dinner at her house.

Their "dance" at this point is separate and awkward. There's still no courage to carry on the "friendship", very similar to what happens in their relationship at that moment.

The theme returns when Otávio consoles Luccino in the workshop after Gaetano's death. The major recalls Randolfo's dream and invites Luccino to dance to help him deal with the pain. Again, the dance starts awkwardly: there's no music and Luccino, for obvious reasons, misses the steps. But that don't stop them from trying, even though Luccino steps on Otávio's feet a few times.

At this moment, their posture in the dance kind of works as a metaphor for the relationship again: there's a desire to move forward, despite the difficulties (Luccino's "two left feet") and ideal conditions (music), which can be compensated for another way (imagination, the counting of time by Otávio). In the eyes of others, dancing without music in a workshop may not be as good as in a ballroom at a party, but for Luccino and Otávio, not only is it enough, but it makes sense. The fact that their first kiss is after this sequence shows that too.

The last dance also takes place in the workshop, but in another context. Luccino and Otávio go there after going to the masquerade ball and realizing that they can't dance together in that place. In these second time, there's music, correct steps, thoughts about one day being able to dance together in public, sense of belonging, declarations of love and happiness, and, unlike the people at the ball, there aren’t masks. For both of them, it all makes sense because even if they're indoors they have each other.

Although fencing shows the beginning and continuity of the relationship between them after five years, the evolution in the dances is more visible and an act common to any couple.
