Woes of the Cuddler
If there was one thing Okarun was not forewarned about, was the adoption of yokai quirks. Quirks he had a hard time controlling. Quirks he wished Turbo Granny had mentioned to him. But it would be just like her to not, leaving him to learn as they come and reveal themselves, and how they uproot his life.
Like the restlessness of the moon and the night. Something about the soft illumination and the darkness of shadows just gives him energy. It was especially hard trying to sleep during a full moon. It was like it ignited a blaze through his veins and he just couldn't settle. Or when he did, he would wake up to find himself transformed, wandering restless through the night, as if he was trying to get out. Okarun was nervous on where he was trying to go.
There was emotional irritability. He found himself upset more easily. And the stronger the ugly emotions were, the more likely he was to shift, entering a weird shift that would soothe that internal blaze, but also focus it, direct that fire of emotions where he wants them to be.
There was a natural want to withdraw, sink into the shadows and himself. Mindful, he's always been an awkward fellow, after all, so this could just be from him. But, he doesn't think so, this was a bit different than him just wanting to bow his head and move about unnoticed. He wanted to go to places that no one would tread. He wanted to sit in solitude. To go deaf from silence. And it was always ruined or haunted locations that now just naturally caught his eye. It's what made him think this was a yokai thing. They always existed in locations with dark history, haunted by a cruel past.
The worst quirk, in Okarun's opinion though, was the sense of possessiveness and desire he felt. He's come to learn that yokai cling to what's precious to them. Guarding it with a jealous fervor. Resistive and infuriated of even the slim thought of sharing what is precious. And for Okarun, as some odd psuedo yokai, he's found that precious that he clings to, that he holds so dear he's not sure he could bring himself to let go.
What's precious to Okarun was Miss Ayase herself.
And that fact unnerved him.
Terrified him even.
Depressed and low energy as he was in his cursed form, yokai were beings that struggled with emotional control, struggled to be reasoned with. And with Acro Silky, he got to see first hand how yokai can respond to a human being they found precious. How she turned on Miss Shiratori for not acting as she wanted or expected.
What if he does something like that one day?
What if Miss Ayase does something he dislikes, and there's no control and he hurts her over it?
The thought of the possibility makes him sick.
And it's made worse by the shine of the full moon, how it seemed to grasp his unconscious and manifests his form, how it acts without his knowing, running on instinct and want.
He does what he can to be careful, to keep her at arm's length, to make sure she's safe and that he won't hurt her. But all that does is frustrate his yokai nature. And when he shifts as he needs to, all that he holds back just comes pouring out. He initiates touch when he wouldn't dare, to feel her warmth in his hands, sending a pleasant tingle that soothed the cold that clung to him. He would hold her close, like the treasure she was, pressed against his chest and his core. Like she was meant to be there, in his arms. Her warmth would spread more over him, her scent would fill his nose, and he could feel the echo of her heart coursing through him, and it seemed to add to his own.
Her name would dance freely upon his lips. He would hear the song of it in his own voice, feel the bliss in how natural it was to breathe it, to say her name as if it was a sacred word. To stress just how precious and dear she was to him.
He would do all that he wanted to do, no filter of fear to hold him back, doing what felt natural, what he desired.
And he always had a linger of horror in the back of his mind just how casual being a yokai made him.
His clear fondness for her in voice and name.
How openly he'd admit to missing her.
That natural pull to just touch her without flustered fear.
It was all so embarrassing.
Made worse that Miss Ayase herself just never had any issue with these. Does she not consider the risks that he's a yokai that seems fond of her? Didn't she see how Acro Silky responded to Miss Shiratori? What if he takes that big mouth, and bites her one day because she did something that upset him?
The fear of the possibility just never seems to come to Miss Ayase's mind.
He's both touched and scared that she just seems to have such faith him.
Which does give him resolve to make sure he stands up to that faith.
And he's been able to.
Sleeping over at the Ayase's residence a few times with no issues, even during a full moon, when Okarun agreed to a big sleepover that Miss Ayase was hosting, he didn't think anything would happen. That he would keep the yokai wants under control as he did before. It was just going to be like any other night.
But as the home went dark, and the light of the full moon shown down upon his sleeping form, he started to twitch and jerk, his black hair turning white with red streaks, red and black tendrils reaching out from his night shirt. Silently, he sat up, his red eyes foggy with sleep as he gazed around for a moment. Jiji was asleep beside him, oblivious to the world and the yokai sitting at his backside. Okarun sniffed the air, and there was a flicker in his red eyes, an awareness of where he was. Like a puppet on a string, he silently crept through the halls of the home, reaching Momo's room in seconds.
Her door opened without a sound, as if shy to make a noise in his presence. There, he saw Aira and Vamola on the floor, sound asleep. Upon the bed was Momo herself, sleeping at the foot of the bed, away from her pillow. He drew near the girls on the floor, reaching for their sleeping bags. Gripping the ends, he dragged them gently out of the room, back into the den where Jiji slept soundly. Going past them, he returned to Momo's room, closing the door behind him, securing that this space was just theirs. He came to loom over the bed, where she slept soundly, ever twitching from where she lay. Taking her pillow and moving it towards her head, Okarun followed it onto the mattress, laying down beside her. The mattress dipped under his weight, and Momo was rolled closer to him, her warmth coming to lightly press at his side.
The pleasantness of it had him sighing.
Yes.
This was where he should be.
Where everything about her was here, at it's strongest. Her space. And he could lay here, welcomed to join her in the center of it.
But to lay here with her lightly touching him wasn't enough. The yokai reached for her, to pull her close where she's meant to be, truly pressed against him, only for Momo to roll away, mumbling in her sleep.
He paused, a little surprised that she drew away from his reach. That didn't happen often.
The surprise didn't linger long, knowing she was a restless sleeper. Unbothered, he reached for her again, only she wiggled her down, past his reaching hands. He sat up, giving her sleeping form a pout. It was just like her to make this difficult. His hands drew near once more and Momo just rolled herself away, now on the other side of the bed. She seemed to know unconsciously that this was where the head of her bed was, her hand going about, patting for her pillow.
With a slight apologetic wince, he quickly returned the pillow to it's rightful place.
Momo immediately latched onto it, hugging it her chest with a happy sigh.
Okarun then felt a slight bit of annoyance.
He wanted to be that pillow.
Why did he even give it back? He couldn't been in that pillow's place.
"What a bummer," he mumbled to the air, adjusting himself to lay beside her. Even if there was a pillow between them, he'll still take the chance to hold her.
Only it seems the sleeping Momo wasn't satisfied with the pillow a cuddling companion, and shoved it away, right into Okaruns' face. She flipped over with a huff, kicking at the sheets in frustration, sending most of them to the floor.
Okarun sat up, rubbing his nose from the pillow assault, and then quickly reached for the covers, saving them from falling to the floor. Knowing on some level how much colder he was in this form, he adjusted them, laying them over himself and Momo. Dropping back down with a sigh, he gave it another go, reaching for her.
Momo though didn't like the covers on her. She started to shift and squirm, and Okarun had a start when she started to wiggle her way off the bed. His hands moved quickly then, grasping her as gently as possible, sighing in relief once he finally got a hold of her. Not letting her go this time, he started to pull her close, finally happy to have her in his grasp, to get her to where he wants her to be, so that he can be where he wants to be.
Momo of course is not one to make it easy for the cursed boy.
She twisted about, her hand going flying through the air, coming to smack on his face.
He went still in surprise. Not that it hurt, but definitely surprised. He shifted, nudging the hand away, making a sort of an affectionate hum that echoed a scoff and chuckle. He pressed a light kiss to her palm, enjoying the soft warm skin on his lips, and pulled her close, this time successful and pressing her against him. There was one more big squirm from Momo before she too finally seemed to settle, it was almost as if she needed him to. In the back of his mind, he had some inkling that that was a hubris thought, but in this sleepy state, it was a thought that brought him happiness. It grew as her arm came up to wrap around his middle, to hold him just as close, while her other hand gripped at his night shirt. It was like she wanted him there, to make sure he would stay. She sighed in content, nuzzling his collar in her sleep.
There was a bubble of a pleased sound from him and he returned that nuzzle on the crown on her head, everything about her surrounding him, happy to be where he wanted to be. He returned to the oblivion of sleep, the curse receding and returning him to how he was in it's satisfaction. Even as the full moon's glow cascaded over them, he slept deeply, and Momo, for once, slept still.
Hours of the night passed, inching for the nearing dawn.
Upon the first light that poked Momo's brow, she stirred with a hum.
She felt cozy and comfortable, surrounding by warmth. Usually her mornings were a lot more... constricted from being entangled in her blanket. Or cold from wiggling herself free. But this, this was nice. So nice she kinda wanted to go back to sleep. But there was that inner twitch in her, a flicker to get up and ready for her day. A restless need to rise with the dawn. So with a shift, she stretched, and went still, realizing that this cozy warmth was holding her still. And it was actually rather firm.
Eyes snapping open, Momo blinked at the dark fabric in front of her face. Said fabric extended up, to a shoulder that loomed over her, an arm coming from it, wrapped around her middle. There was a hand lazily pressed against her back, fingers twitching slightly in sleep. Momo looked up, her nose bumping against Okarun's chin, her eyes coming to settle on his sleeping face.
Momo stared, gawking in surprise to see Okarun there.
Her immediate thought was that she maybe sleep walked to him, only to realize that she was in her room, and they were in her bed, all tangled up.
Flushing, she wiggled herself up, only to go still as his arms tightened around her. He groaned in protest, coming to curl around her, pressing his face into her stomach.
She flushed, not used to seeing such behavior from Okarun, At least, not as he is. When he shifted into his curse form, yeah this she's come to expect. But as himself? It was weird. Not unpleasant, she can appreciate the boldness, but not right now with her. Looking around, Momo saw that Aira and Vamola were gone. She flushed even more. Did they see?
No, wait, Their actual sleeping bags were gone... why were they gone?
Still a little red, but more baffled now, she turned back to the boy clinging to her in sleep, giving his head a few light pokes. "What did you do?" she quietly wondered.
She was ignored, Okarun it seems was determined to keep on sleeping.
"Okarun," she prompted, giving him a more pokes.
There was something of a protesting groan, that sounded a little throatier than she expected. When he cracked one eye open, she saw a hue of red in his brown eyes, as if he close to shifting.
Momo swallowed a little at the intensity of the groggy gaze peering up at her."What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Sleeping," he mumbled, his voice torn between the softness of the boy and the gruffness of the yokai. Finding that the answer was satisfactory, he closed his eye, ready to go back to sleep.
"Where's Aira and Vamola?" Momo pressed.
"Jiji," came the grumpy answer. Seemingly annoyed with Momo's questioning, she squeaked in surprise as she was flipped over. She plopped back down on her bed, pulled close for more cuddles, his cheek pressed against her own. Okarun looked ready to just fall back asleep, having a happy sigh.
Momo was absolutely not though.
"Why are you even in my bed?" she demanded, reaching up to grasp his arm.
Okarun suddenly went stiff and still.
Momo watched as his brown eyes opened, no more having a tinge of red, staring right into her own pink-brown eyes.
He stared.
Momo stared back, brow raised as she waited for his answer.
Okarun blinked a few times, and the reality of the situation seemed to click.
Quite suddenly, he withdrew from her, was out of the bed, and speeding out of the door, shouting, "I'M SO SORRY!!"
Momo was left in surprise, gawking after him. For a second, she noted how cold it suddenly was before Okarun's escape caught up to her. "That's not an answer!" she snapped, leaping out of bed and racing after him. In their mad sprint, they startled their friends awake, though grumpy Aira just rolled over back to bed while Jiji and Vamola just squinted after them in groggy confusion.
In her rush, it didn't take Momo long to corner Okarun, the ball defaulting to cowering down in a corner while she loomed over him, caging him in. "Okarun, seriously, what were you doing in my bed?"
"It-it was a mistake!" he cried out in flushed panic, "Won't happen again!"
"That doesn't answer my question!" she snapped.
Okarun just groaned pitifully, trying to bury his red face in his hands.
Sighing, Momo eased back, giving him some breathing room, and waited. After a few minutes, she tried again. "What's going on, Okarun?"
"...The moon," he mumbled.
"Hah?"
"Th-the full moon," Okarun clarified, peeking at her past his fingers. "It uh, it manifests the curse."
"So, you just transform?" she asked, watching him nod sheepishly. She tried to figure out how this got him into her bed. Cause he was himself at the core when he shifted. He was just gloomy, and lacked a filter.
"It, uh, I kinda transform unconsciously," Okarun revealed, "and, and I kinda... just act on instinct. I'd wake up to me sleepwalking around my home, like I'm trying to go somewhere." He thinks he's trying to find his way here. "I, I'm sorry, Miss Ayase. I, I must have crawled into your..." He couldn't even dare finish the sentence. He was so embarrassed.
"So, you just wanted to cuddle?" she asked, unable to deny the happy feeling it brought. Aira and Vamola were also in the room, and out of them, he wanted to cuddle with her. That did make her feel special.
Okarun just whimpered, trying to curl in on himself.
"Wait," she recalled, "why did you move Aira and Vamola out of the room then?"
Okarun peeked up at her, echoing her confusion. "I-I don't know. I don't remember... they're gone from your room?"
"You said they're with Jiji?"
"I don't know," Okarun bemoaned, blushing and turning away.
For a minute, they stood in silence, Momo watching as Okarun agonized over last night. Tentatively, she reached out, lightly threading her fingers through his messy bedhead. Okarun went still, then his body moved on it's own, pressing up to her touch like a cat wanting pets. His face was still red though, squinting in happiness and embarrassment. Momo offered, "If it helps, I slept great last night."
His head dropped from her touch, turning to hide his face from her. Quietly, he admitted, "I did too."
Momo smiled. "I'm glad. And hey, I don't mind cuddling with you, Okarun, just give me a heads up next time."
"Miss Ayase!" he cried out in protest as Momo walked away, ready to get breakfast going. She was right in concluding he was going to need a minute before he could rejoin them inside.

Summary:
A lot of weird things had happened in Okarun's life since he met Momo.
Befriending ancient ghosts, stopping an alien invasion and being able to travel telephone lines. This has become his new normal.
But seeing a version of yourself holding the girl of your heart in a tight hug and purring like an overgrown cat was still very surreal, even for his new standards.
Could you be jealous of yourself?
Has been ages since I last wrote fanfiction, but DanDaDan just itched the right spot and I was very motivated by all these others fics I read over the past few weeks. I might be rusty, but I had fun!

A pained hiss escaped Okarun, as he removed the last patch from his face.
Inspecting the cut in the bathroom mirror, he could see that it was almost healed and wouldn't leave a scar in the morning. His ability to recover from wounds of all kinds was fascinating, all thanks to his Yokai powers. Although he never wanted to find out what the limit was. He almost did five days ago.
Taking in a deep breath, he started his evening routine. Washing his face, brushing his teeth, changing into his pyjamas.
And his mind wandered.
It had been a very, very long day.
During the whole evening he had been able to distract his mind with the cheery presence of his friends, the relief that they were all alive and well. Okarun enjoyed the usual squabbling during dinner and just goofing off with Jiji and Kinta talking about their newly acquired toy robots.
But now exhaustion caught up with him, both in mind and body. He couldn't keep the bad thoughts away. The fear, the...heartbreak he had felt when Momo had charged towards that alien and just...disappeared. They say you see your life flash before your eyes before you die. In that moment it had felt like a part of him had died and all the wonderful moments he had shared with her replayed in his head. And for a few agonising seconds he thought that they would not be able to make more memories in the future.
The thought still made his stomach churn and he quickly shook his head, as to get rid of this awful feeling.
To little avail, as something else crept into his mind: Reiko Kashima.
Momo had told him that she was the most powerful Yokai of them all and she had proven that by defeating the alien army effortlessly. And under all his bravado when trying to protect Momo from her, he had noticed how his own Yokai powers felt uneasy in her presence.
It was just by luck that Reiko stopped pursuing Momo on a whim. Something about her finding love? He still didn't quite understand what had been going on, but he was just glad that Momo was safe.
She always managed to get into some kind of trouble, either by being reckless or pissing some higher entity off. Okarun admired her brashness, it's just who she was. But sometimes he wished she would act more cautious.
'But can I actually blame her?' he thought to himself with a sigh. 'I wouldn't care about my safety either if Miss Ayase was in danger.'
A tingle washed over his skin and something akin to a hum echoed in the back of his mind.
His Yokai self agreed with that statement.
thud
His forehead met the bathroom mirror and he felt a slight pang at the contact, something he tried to focus on instead of all these very depressing thoughts running through his head.
Falling asleep would be such a challenge tonight.
______________________________________________________________
Finished with his evening routine, Okarun left the bathroom and walked towards the spare room. It was always either his room or the boys room when the other guys stayed overnight. Jiji and Kinta were probably already snoozing away.
On his way, he walked past Momo's room, where the girls were sleeping.
A faint light shone from under the door and he could hear some hushed whispers. They seemed to be still awake.
He stopped in front of the door and just stared at it.
She was in that room.
This time the feeling that washed over him was a more aggressive prickling.
He should be in there with her, looking after her. Making sure she wouldn't do anything reckless again, that she stayed with him. Holding her close, wrapping himself around her, giving her safety and comfort.
Shredding anything that would dare approach her to bloody pieces.
His eyes and hair changed to their Yokai colours for a moment.
With a frustrated sigh, Okarun pushed his glasses up and rubbed his eyes, calming his nerves.
It was an absolutely stupid need...nay, desire he felt to protect her. They were safe here and Momo had Vamola and Aira with her. And she could take care of herself.
But...
But what if next time there was not an all powerful Yokai that did their battle for them? What if they were not so lucky and went against an enemy they couldn't defeat?
What if I'm not fast enough?
Thoughts spiralling further down a maelstrom of all the worst possible scenarios, he didn't notice how the door slowly opened.
"Okarun?"
Being yanked out of his dark thoughts, a surprised squeak escaped him and he jumped a step back. Momo was peering out of the half opened door, smiling amused at his overreaction.
"M-Miss Ayase! Don't scare me like that," he whined, trying to stay quiet so as not to wake the grannies who were asleep in another room nearby.
"Your own fault," she chuckled, stepping outside into the dimly lit hallway and closing the door behind her. "Thought you would be snoring in a choir with the guys by now. Or are you trying to spy on us?"
The wide grin she gave him made it clear that she was just teasing, but Okarun still felt caught. He had been standing in front of her room like a creep after all.
"I-I...uh would never...," he stammered, one hand fidgeting with his glasses and looking away from her into the empty hallway.
"Then why are you still wandering around?" Leaning against the wall, she crossed her arms and tilted her head.
He kept his eyes glued to the floor and the second hand came up to his glasses to cling to them. They seemed like a safety blanket at times, giving his nervously shaking hands something to hold on to.
It was a simple question, but he didn't know how to answer it. He didn't feel like lying to her, but he couldn't tell her what was going through his head.
I want to keep you safe in your room.
I'm still angry at you for being so reckless.
I'm afraid that you could get hurt.
I want to hold you and tell you how much I love you.
Even just thinking the last statement made the back of his neck feel very warm. Yeah, he definitely couldn't say that out loud. So he just opted to silence.
"Okarun?" Momo finally spoke up after a very long minute. "You okay?"
The worry in her voice was clear and when he glanced towards her, he could see it in her face too. A deep sigh escaped him, as he mulled over something he could give as a response.
"Today was just...a lot."
Not a lie. But also a big understatement of what was going on in his mind.
Out of the corners of his eyes he could see how Momo raised her arms and let out a groan before flopping ungracefully on the floor.
"You can say that again. I'm sick of all these aliens and Yokai. Just one weekend without anything weird or supernatural would feel like a vacation by now."
Her whine sounded more like she was complaining about a very annoying school report than being attacked by monsters. Okarun couldn't help himself, but to chuckle at her theatrics. And she had a very good point.
"A vacation...would be really nice," he agreed, hands moving away from his glasses and looking at her with a smile.
"Right?" she jumped back up and clapped her hands together, getting very excited now. "Maybe we should really go somewhere. Like..," The gears in her head were working hard, before she finally got it. "The beach! Just relaxing in the warm sun and going for a cool swim sounds like heaven. And I finally could wear that cute bikini I recently got."
It didn't register with him immediately what her last sentence was, too dumbfounded that she was serious with planning a vacation trip and that in the middle of the night. But that was Momo for you, spontaneously deciding on things because the mood struck. He really liked that about her.
Then it suddenly clicked in his head what she had said.
"V-very good idea. I-I'm sure the others would like that too," he spluttered, face flushed.
Suddenly, the floor was very interesting again and his hands were back on the glasses.
'Calm down, calm down!' he chided himself, his inner voice sounding high-pitched from panic. 'You will not think about Miss Ayase in a...in a...'
It was no use. Images of Momo in all kinds of bikinis flashed before his eyes and she looked cute in all of them. He was such a horrible man for having these thoughts.
Unseen by him, Momo just smiled at his very obvious distressed state. It flattered her that just mentioning wearing a bikini would get him so flustered. But then her smile faltered and it was her turn to look bashful to the side.
"Well...maybe it could be...only us?" She hated how sheepish her voice could sound.
At that, Okarun snapped out of berating himself and looked puzzled at her. Was she...was she suggesting what he thought she was?
After glancing at him for a moment, Momo started playing with her bangs and tried to explain herself: "It's just...me and the others, we've been training together the past week and you were...," Knocked out and close to death. She sighed and wrapped her arms around herself. He wished it were his arms. Her eyes met his gaze. "I could do with some quiet for a day or two."
Momo sounded like he felt: Tired. Just tired from everything and wanting some normality. It warmed his heart that she wanted to share that feeling of normality just with him. Going to the beach, having fun and not a care in the world about aliens and ghosts. Just two normal teenagers. And maybe...maybe he would be able to get his courage together to tell her.
"I would like that very much," he finally said, giving her a comforting and reassuring smile.
She blinked at him, before a sigh of relief escaped her and she answered with a grateful smile of her own.
"Glad you agree."
Suddenly her attitude shifted and she gave him a wide grin, while putting one hand on her hips and pointing with the other at him. "And since I came up with this great idea, you can be in charge of organising it. Don't worry, as thanks I will cook you whatever you want."
Okarun let out an amused huff, actually glad she wanted him to be in charge. Momo had a rather careless attitude towards planning, saying it would all work out somehow. He, on the other hand, was already thinking about which train would be best to take and affordable lodges in the beach area.
"That's really not necessary Miss Ayase. I don't mind organising it," he tried to convince her, but to no avail.
"Nah, I insist on it!" she said, thumping her first against her chest. "Come on, tell me what you would like."
That look of determination was all too familiar to him and so he just let his shoulders slack in defeat. It really was too late to argue with her about this. And if he was honest to himself...he always liked it when he got to eat food that was prepared by her.
"I think...I have come to really like your curry...," he mumbled and absently smiled, remembering how heavenly her curry had tasted after he had woken up from his coma. It had given him such an energy boost he had never felt before. The curry...and her note.
Oh
His whole body went stiff.
Of course the only reason he could forget about that at all was by having negative thoughts gnawing on his mind, leaving no room to continue agonising if her 'Love ya' note was meant in a platonic or...romantic way. But there it was again on the forefront of his mind, making his whole face flush with the possibility of the latter. Should...should he just ask? Would that be stupid? Was it obvious he should know the answer?
Debating with himself on what to do, he just stared at Momo with wide eyes. And she did pretty much the same, even in the dim light he could see that her cheeks were coloured.
I wish I could see her pretty eyes more clearly.
"Are you finally done with your yapping, you asswhipes? Some people need their beauty sleep over here!"
Both teenagers let out a startled yelp when Turbo Granny suddenly spoke up. They turned their heads to the bedroom of the grannies and saw the little maneki neko doll standing in the half opened door, glaring at them even more grumpy than usual.
Momo was the first to snap out of the shock. Anger turned her expression into a snarl and she pointed at the doll.
"No amount of sleep is able to fix that old hag visage of yours!"
"Rich coming from the gaudy hag! Be grateful I'm in no mood or I would teach you a lesson." While her voice was still full of venom, Turbo Granny did not sound as pissed off as she usually did. Maybe she really was just tired.
"Try me!" Momo growled and was ready to throw hands with the cat doll, only held back by Okarun who had managed to grab her by the elbow. Granny did not care for her challenge and shifted her focus towards Okarun.
"And you wimp!" While still keeping Momo from pouncing at Turbo Granny, his eyes darted towards the doll. "Get a hold of yourself or my spiritual powers will get into a tizzy. And then I have to fix it for you!"
With a frustrated cat sound she threw her little arms up, muttering something about idiot youngens. She did not further explain herself and just went back into the room, leaving the teenagers alone again.
"What is she talking about?" Momo asked, her previous fury replaced with concern. She looked at Okarun, but he was looking deliberately away from her, letting go of her elbow.
"Ahhh...no idea. Probably just grouchy because we woke her up," he tried to reassure her.
But internally, he had a bad feeling about this. The whole evening he had been shifting into his Yokai form partly for a few seconds. Always when his emotions got especially intense. What did Turbo Granny mean with the powers going into a tizzy? There was no use worrying about that at this hour. He probably just needed some rest and everything would be under control again. At least he hoped so.
"We should probably go to sleep too. We can talk more about the beach thing tomorrow."
Momo made an agreeing noise. Relieved she didn't keep probing at the subject, he gave her a small smile. "Goodnight Miss Ayase."
He turned around to leave, but he barely took two steps before she spoke up again.
"Okarun."
Before he was able to look back at her, he could feel her arms wrap around his chest from behind, her body pressing against his back.
She is so close.
Mouth open in a silent scream, Okarun went stiff. His heart was pounding so loud, he was sure the whole house could hear it. He hoped she couldn't feel how warm he got. Why was she suddenly hugging like this? Why now when he barely had the mental capacity to follow his foolish desires to hold her close himself? As much as he didn't want to, he had to get out of her arms or he would do something stupid.
Lost in frantic thoughts, he almost missed her whispered words. "You would tell me...if something is troubling you...right?"
The worry in her voice pulled him out of his flustered panic. With a glance behind him he could see how she had her cheek pressed against his shoulder. Her hair was pleasingly tickling the nape of his neck.
Making her worry was the last thing he wanted to, especially when there was no reason for it in his opinion. She should be sleeping peacefully and not stressing over him. He wasn't worth it.
His arms came up to hug hers that were wrapped around him, drawing soothing circles over the back of her hand with his thumb. If it was to calm her down, he didn't mind the closeness.
"I...have a lot on my mind," was all he admitted to. "But I'll be fine. Honestly, talking with you already helped me a lot. Thank you."
And it was true. She had cheered him up with her antics and idea for a beach vacation, given him something nice to look forward to.
Not completely happy with his answer, she grumbled against his back, but did not push him on that matter.
"You're welcome..." she mumbled. After giving him one last squeeze, she let go of him. He immediately missed her warmth on his back. "Okay, sleep well Okarun."
"You too, Miss Ayase."
They looked at each other for a moment longer. Momo looked like she was hesitating to do something, but in the end she waved at him, before turning to her bedroom door. He returned the wave and trudged towards the boys room.
______________________________________________________________
As expected, Jiji and Kinta were fast asleep and barely stirred when Okarun crawled into his futon. He just wanted to sleep, all of his body and mind were so exhausted. But apparently the latter was not too exhausted as to not edging him back to those dark thoughts he had earlier, back to worrying about things out of his control, of things that did not happen. This time he had a way to fight back: Thinking about how warm Momo felt against his back and that they would go to the beach, just the two of them.
It really had been so long since they did something together without someone from their friend group inviting themselves. He was happy to have so many friends, but he did miss the times when it was just him and Momo. The undefeatable duo. He chuckled a bit at the silliness of that thought. They would be pretty lost without the support of their allies. But one could imagine.
And so he slowly drifted off, lulled into sleep by thoughts of the good old times, the beach and Momo's warm smile.
After a while Okarun managed to fall asleep so deep that he did not notice the door opening and footsteps leaving the room.
______________________________________________________________
As soon as Momo had gone back to her room, Aira had started to interrogate her. Why was she out so long? What did she talk with Takakura about? She just deflected the questions with statements of being tired, but Aira only stopped when Vamola let out a big yawn. Grumbling, she settled into her futon, only wishing the alien girl a good night and ignoring their host.
Momo couldn't care less and just flopped onto her bed.
It really had been a long and exhausting day.
There was still some worry nagging at her about Okarun, but she would be questioning him about it more tomorrow. For now she was glad that her suggestion with the beach seemed to have brightened his mood. When she had seen him standing in the dark hallway he had looked so lost. So she had acted all silly to cheer him up and while she hadn't been serious about the beach trip at first, she was happy they both agreed it was a good idea. Finally she would be able to have some quality time just with him.
Blushing at that thought, she wrapped herself in the blanked and ignored her heart doing a little dance in her chest.
After calming herself down, she was able to fall asleep rather quickly. But as deep as her sleep was, so was it restless.
All the horrors of the day that she had been pushed away washed over her now. Scenes from the battles against the aliens flashed in her dreams. She was running, she was fighting.
She was afraid.
The door to her slowly opened. A dark and lanky figure entered the room quietly, carefully stepping between Aira's and Vamola's futon so as not to wake them up. It stopped in front of Momo's bed, red glowing eyes staring at her.
But she did not notice, trapped in her nightmare. Aliens slamming her against walls, punching her to the floor, squeezing her throat. She could only watch helplessly as the city around her was destroyed and her friends deadly injured. She tried to use her psychic powers, but there was nothing and she chocked for air. Tears were running down her face. She wanted this to just stop.
Suddenly a soothing cool washed over her. Nothing constricted her throat anymore, breathing felt so easy again. And then she felt a hand wrapping around hers. She whipped her head to the side.
It was Okarun.
He had taken her hand in his, smiling that bashful but oh so adorable smile of his. All the fear in her evaporated, replaced by a calming warmth in her chest. She smiled back at him.
Momo had been tossing and turning in her sleep, but now she laid there peacefully, the same smile on her face as in her dream. She squeezed the hand holding hers.
The figure sat down beside the bed, watching over her and letting her hold its hand the whole night.

Ken "Okarun" Takakura’s first date with fem!reader headcanons
warnings: established relationship, tooth-rooting fluff, fem!reader, references to Christmas.
divider by @cafekitsune
Okarun never would have the guts to confess his feelings for you without help from Miss Ayase. He knew he shouldn’t have waited, but he was scared, okay? Even guys get worried if the person they like doesn’t feel the same towards them as he felt towards you!
Now? Well, today was special for two reasons: it was Christmas, and your very first outing as a couple. A date. Initially, he had wanted to push it back a little because he knew the restaurants, cafes, and the amusement park were going to be packed with other couples who wanted to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with their special someone.
But Miss Ayase wouldn’t hear it. Going on your first date is supposed to be this super amazing memory to look back on, and there is absolutely no better time to have fun and do activities together than on Christmas! So here he is, standing in front of the department store that served as your meeting spot and almost wiggling with anxiety as he counted down the minutes on his wristwatch. He really needed to work extra hours to get a new phone so he can call and text you instead of just waiting to see you on the way to and from school to talk about paranormal stuff.
Actually, he had enough to get a phone at one point. But if he spent all of his money on that, then he wouldn’t be able to surprise you with the gift he had hidden in his backpack. Your happiness means the world to him, and he’ll be damned if he didn’t get you at least something to commemorate your first date!
Okarun will be a gentleman throughout the whole day, opening doors for you and draping his jacket over your shoulders if he notices you are cold. But then again, when isn’t he a sweetie towards you?
He has every intention of paying for your snacks or a meal if you decide to have an early dinner together, so please do not argue with him.
A present from you, regardless of size, will make this cinnamon roll incredibly happy. To him, the gift signifies the time and thought you placed into finding something for him. If he wasn’t already grateful to have you in his life, he is now.
If it got too late by the time that the date was sadly ending, Okarun will insist that he walk you home. Do you have a curfew? Say no more, Turbo!Ken already has his shoes and socks off, ready to blitz through the streets with you in his arms if it meant you didn’t get in trouble and there would be a second date in the foreseeable future.

The unexpected hangout
𝐼 𝓃𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓀𝓃𝑒𝓌 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝓈𝑜𝓂𝑒𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝑜𝓊𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝓌𝑒𝒾𝓇𝒹 𝒶𝓈 𝓂𝑒
(Music is intended to be played in the story, wear headphones <3) (long fic)
I grew up in this town for as long as i can remember, i wasn’t introverted, but i wasn’t an extrovert either. I spoke when i had to, leaving me with a group of friends here and there. Beginning high-school was another story, i still had my small group of friends including this one girl Momo. I don’t exactly know how i became friends with her but shes been the friendliest since i could remember.
But i find myself drowning in the sinkhole of over working, and i think she could tell because she recommended a sleepover/hangout with another one of her friends that she thought i would like. Momo is the only one i can truly be myself around so how can i expect her friend to even like me. I open to learning many subjects, although i don’t pick a favorite i like things about conspiracies or random theories to keep me up thinking.
My phone dings with a message, its from Momo
Momo👻: I’ll be at your place around 7! My friend is still coming over, trust me you and him are going to be great friends.
Me: Him? He’s a guy? You must be setting something up
Momo👻: Well I’m just saying if things between you guys progress than it is what it is but thats NOT what I’m trying to do at all🤣
Me: What if he’s really rude or something i cant handle more stress I’m too tired for this, if i wanted to have a guy friend then i would have asked.
Momo👻: No he’s not like that he’s a total nerd, he would never do anything harmful. Ive been friends with him for awhile, i talk to him about aliens and stuff all the time
Me: What makes you think i wanna deal with boys at all. I’ll try to be friends with him i guess but if he does anything that i can’t respect he’s getting out of my home
Momo👻: Alrightt no need to be so stuck up, your stressed just relax for a bit.
I stare up at the starry night and then bring my eyes to the clock, Momo is a few minutes late. But as a coincidence, she knocks at my door as soon as i have that thought. I go down the stairs to see her open the door, hmm must have been unlocked, but i remember locking.
Maybe i should be nice, ill try my best too. I mean she wasn’t worried about him or anything. Momo swings the door open giving me a big hug, i look behind her to see a boy. We make eye contact and he looks away timidly and fiddles with his hair. Momo knew i had a thing for nerds, she’s definitely setting something up.
(I was a little scared to introduce myself though…)
“This is my friend i told you about, his name is okarun!!”
He looks back up shyly, extended his hand to give me a hand shake. I give him a handshake back, flashing the tiniest smile to show the least bit of comfort. He steps closer to me to whisper something quiet enough not for Momo to hear
“M—my name is actually Ken takakura…” I nod my head to make sure Momo doesn’t think anything is up, i wonder why she calls him Okarun though. Momo yawns making her way to the living room and into the kitchen, opening the fridge to look for her favorite drink i usually keep at my place.
“Hey…y/n you don’t have any more of that drink..”
“Sorry, I’ll buy some more soon.” She walks back over to the entrance of the home where me and Ken were still standing awkwardly “its alright, speaking of which, the gas station is only a 5 minutes walk from here. I’ll go run and buy some!! My grandma gave me some money incase i wanted to get snacks!”
I look at her in despair. I whisper yell at her before she walks out the door “You’re leaving??!? Now???! Me alone with a boy??!!”
“Cmonn I’m gonna be back I’ll make it quick.” She gives me a sly wink before shutting my own door at my face. I turn around slowly, lifting my head up to look at Ken embarrassingly. He was looking at me but he shifted his gaze to some random spot in the house. I didn’t want to stand here forever..
“We can just go to my room for now while we wait…”
I guide him up the stairs towards my room, i leave background music playing to calm me and i accidentally forgot to turn it off. We enter my room and his eyes lighten up like a puppy. I had a fluffy rug, thick bed sheets many tiny figures and posters, with a neat desk and dim lights. He felt a comforting feeling as he heard the music that was left playing.
He looks around and he notices i have a book on my desk titled “conspiracy’s and theories #1: Aliens? Are they real?” I sat on my bed and i saw him approach the book for a closer inspection, his eyes glow as he looks up at me.
He realizes he touched something without asking and he places the book down quickly while fiddling with his hair again and re-adjusting his glasses. He looks down at the floor in embarrassment with a blushing face.
“I have the same book..d—do you like…aliens..?”
My goodness he is so cute. I snap out of my daydreaming after staring at him.“Well…i like reading about them. They seem cool to me and i like the unknown. I watch a-lot of documents.”
He looks up at me, with his hand still in his hair. “Do you know anything about…UAP’s and UFO’s..? I softly replied, “Yes i do read about them a little.” His eyes were in full on dull mode, he was so ready to rant. I realized he was still standing, and i was on my bed. He’s not a bad guy at all, he’s just really shy, well— so am i.
I pat the spot next to me signaling him to sit down next to me. I try to get more comfortable, i sat in a criss cross position. He looks at me with his face flushing again and he slowly makes his way to the bed, he sat in the same criss cross position facing me. His hand still in his hair obviously, his head down, he muttered…
“There have been many sightings of aliens..I—I’ve done alot of research. I should have brought my b—books but i thought that you weren’t really going to like….me..”
“Oh, i thought the same about you…that you were going to be kind of rude to me. But you like the same things as me.”
He hesitantly brings his head up to make eye contact with me, his face a pink tone due to the blush. My open window blows a cool air into the room, moonlight hitting his eyes and shining them. I avert my gaze to him to see him pondering into my eyes, his lips part as he was going to say something until we could hear the door open. It was Momo, that was really quick.
We rush back downstairs to see her with multiple bags, more than what she said she was going to buy. “Oh man, i really should have called you!! They had an amazing deal and i got so many snacks for half off!”
Me and Ken look at each-other, we slightly giggle at the goofiness of Momo. Momo ran up the stairs and came back down with a giant blanket from my closet, she places it on the couch with the snacks she bought on the table
“Cmon guys let’s watch a movie!!” I sat down with Ken trying not to be to close to make me uncomfortable, through out the movies we watched i could feel him land his attention on me. But he was very slick with it, i could hardly tell.
At the end of the night after all the movies, Momo and Ken helped clean up. Momo grabbed all of her belongings and so did Ken and they were about to leave. “Bye y/n! See you tomorrow!!”
“B—bye…” i didn’t want it to end like this… “Okarun.” He turns around and looks at me with confusion and a bit of fluster. “Could I see your phone for a sec?” He hands me his unlocked phone and i quickly type my number and my name into a new contact space and hand him his phone back. He looks at what I’ve done and his face goes from pink to a rose red. He looks up at me like his face was about to explode
It seems like he wanted to say thank you, but Momo pulled him out of the door in a hurry. The door shut on me again, but instead..i don’t feel lonely anymore. I feel a warmth entered my soul.
We could be friends…
This took forveerrr please but i love this alot like i really wanted to get the emotion in here😭🫶🏾

Fanart of chaotic_quibit's Gazing Into The Abyss! I love this fic so much, you can find my comments on every chapter I think. You've all been spoiled for the fic, whoops...
Thinking about Okarun at the end of the fic and Turbo Granny's teeth-mask-thingy... What if okuri-ōkami Okarun had a big wolf snout? What if he did? Think about it? Big ol' giant wolf...
Fun fact: finding actual traditional Japanese art is so fucking difficult. Anyway, he looks a little bit like a clown, which I didn't intend and I think is funny and Momo definitely teases him about.
(So do we call him Okurirun... Okamirun... Or is he still just Okarun and it's like a triple pun?)
I LOVE YOU, DOG

Hand Holding
Read more here.
.
For Momo, it was amusingly endearing how the simplest things would fluster Okarun so much. Like hand holding. A thing all couples did. A thing she wanted to do, and she knows he wants to as well, with his shy attempts to reach for her hands.
And when they do, it’s nice.
His touch is gentle and timid, a sharp contrast to Momo’s confident and affectionate grasp. And sometimes, his grip would tighten, as if there was a desperation to hold her, to keep her hand in his.
And while Momo would notice that clear want, he was always the first to let go, often quickly, as if the flusteredness of such a simple touch was too much.
On some level, Momo was impatient.
Of all the things they’ve gone through, holding each other, Okarun often ending up on top of her (even nude once!), and just how much physical contact they have; holding hands was apparently too much?
Momo thinks it should be the easiest thing.
But she also considers that this is a first for Okarun.
His first friend.
His first crush and love.
And now his first girlfriend.
There’s a lot he’s easing himself into learning and adjusting.
And she’ll take their baby steps as wins. She likes it when he gathers the courage to hold her hand, likes it when he matches her in grip and want, as if he was touch starved and her hand alone gave him all he wanted. And she genuinely liked holding his hand. She could feel the strength he developed in his hand, but he always held her so gently, as if afraid to break it.
In comparison to her first boyfriend, that stupid tuna, this was so much nicer. Momo recalls she got jerked and dragged along instead of simply just enjoying the touch and moment together.
But she does with Okarun, at least when he’s able to hold her hand.
And one day soon, she knows it’ll be natural. That Okarun will be comfortable and confident enough to do so, she just has to be patient.
God knows he has endless patience for her and her antics.
It seems though, that this night, with the moon full and bright, her wants were answered, though not entirely how she wanted them to be.
Stepping out of the maid cafe, she wasn’t surprised to find Okarun waiting for her. She was surprised to see him in his yokai form, white hair blowing in some unnatural wind, staring out into the world vacant like there was nothing he truly saw before him.
“Okarun?” she prompted, drawing near.
Lazy red eyes slid her way before he turned to face her. “Done?” he asked in his deep drawl.
“Yeah, but why are you transformed?”
He heaved out the loudest sigh. “It’s my moon time…”
“Oh, right,” Momo said, glancing up at the full moon. Grandma confirmed that yokai strength did echo the lunar phases, growing stronger during full moons, and for Okarun and Aira, it meant their yokai power would manifest and transform them out of their control.
As the full moon often came out during the night, there haven’t been that many issues with this. At least, not on Momo’s end. She can’t speak for their own home life.
Momo had a start as Okarun reached out, his hand coming to touch her lightly, impatient to hold her hand but waiting for that permission. With a beam, Momo laced their fingers, and Okarun quickly engulfed her hand with his larger hand and held with gentle tightness, like she was some treasure that could be stolen from him.
It dawned on Momo that this was the first time she held his hand in his yokai form. His hand was bigger, easily dwarfing hers, and his fingers were longer as were his nails. Momo didn’t feel uneasy with his hold like this, he was just as gentle as any other time.
In spite of initiating the touch, Okarun stood still, seemingly content to just stand around and hold her hand.
“Shall we?” Momo asked.
Okarun just hummed, staring at her.
Used to him staring at her openly in this form, Momo led the way, starting to fill the air with chatter.
“I think the plan tonight was crab, but knowing Grandma and Turbo Granny, they probably ate it all.” Momo made a face at the likely true fact. But that was how it was in the Ayase home. At meal time, it was a first come, first serve.
“Bummer,” Okarun replied.
“Are you hungry?” Momo asked.
“I could eat…”
Momo bounced about giddily, Okarun’s arm jerking and moving about with her as he refused to let go. “Then let’s go eat our own crab!”
“Sounds good, yo.”
Okarunw as nearly toppled over in Momo’s rush for food, having just the place in mind. They got themselves a booth, placed their order, and Momo started to go off for the events of her work day, still holding hands with Okarun much to her glee.
Despite dating for a near month, Okarun was not able to hold her hand for long, so this was rather nice.
Until the food came.
“Mmmm, that smells so good,” Momo declared in delight, drooling at the steaming red crab legs before her. “Thank you very much!” she declared and was ready to start pick up a leg—
— only to find one of her hands isn’t free.
It was still, quite firmly, in Okarun’s grasp.
“Okarun, I need my hand,” Momo stated, giving him a dangerous look while she tried to tug her hand free.
“But I missed you, Momo-chan,” he replied, ignoring her glare and refusing to let go.
“You can hold my hand after dinner,” Momo said, now trying to grapple his hand off of hers.
No one will come between an Ayase and their food…
Okarun groaned. “That sounds like a long time to wait, yo.”
“Dinner won’t take that long!” Momo snapped, baring her teeth at him.
Okarun was unphased. He replied, “It will be for me…”
“Okarun! I don’t need this right now!”
She was just starting to consider biting his hand outright when Okarun shifted, sliding around their curved booth to sit next to her, his free hand coming to her crab legs. Momo was about to go feral at the thought that Okarun was going to steal her food when his long nail slid over the shell, cutting the leg open and revealing the steaming meat within.
Momo drooled.
Oh, it looked so good…
“Does that help?” he asked.
Momo licked her lips, but turned to him to stress, “I still need two hands to eat.”
“What if I fed you, yo?”
Momo went stiff, her cheeks starting to blush. She turned away, suddenly feeling a little shy. “Um, I guess we could try?” she shyly agreed.
With his free hand, he used a fork to pluck some meat free and offered it to her. Momo took, humming in delight as the flavor danced on her tongue. And by the small, happy sound from the small little gesture, a switch seemed to go off in Okarun’s head. He suddenly perked attention, watching intently as she ate.
Not that Momo noticed, too happy having some crab.
When she opened her eyes, he had another piece ready for her.
No way Momo was going to refuse.
But, after a few bites of bliss, she came to realize Okarun wasn’t eating at all, he was just focusing on feeding her.
Not taking the offered food, she asked, “Aren’t you going to eat?”
“After you,” he replied, still waiting for her to accept the next bite. In truth, even if there was a twinge of hunger, he was ready to bring his plate over and keep feeding her. Instinctively, it just felt right.
Momo narrowed her eyes at him. “But you were hungry, weren’t you, Okarun?”
“Yes,” he confirmed, waving the fork about, trying to tempt her to keep eating.
“Then eat your crab.”
“But you had a full day of work.”
Momo plucked the fork from his fingers, turning it to him, pressing the meat to his lips. “How about I take a turn feeding you?”
Okarun went stiff.
Oh my, Momo thought, that is the most torn expression she’s ever seen on yokai Okarun’s face.
And torn he was.
The thought of Momo feeding him shot delight and warmth through him, but there was a need to offer her food, to feed and provide for her. An instinct to insist that this was what he must do, even as hunger poked at the back of his mind, the want to feed and provide for her was stronger. To prove to his heart’s desire that he could provide. That he was reliable. As much as he loved her offering him food in return, offering her own promise to care for him, he really wanted to be the one to stress this message.
As Okarun tried to work through his inner turmoil, Momo had only so much patience for his struggle before she turned the fork around and ate the crab herself.
That seemed to jolt Okarun out of his dissonance, gawking slightly at her choice before slouching over in defeat. “What a bummer…” he bemoaned.
He missed his chance to feed and provide for her.
He missed his chance to be fed by her.
How terrible.
He wanted to go home…
“Don’t be so dramatic,” Momo scolded lightly, rolling her eyes at him. At least her hand was free, and she took the chance to handle her own crab legs how she wanted. Plucking the meat out, she offered it to him again, watching his red eye flicker to attention. “Are you going to eat it this time?”
He eyed the offered crab for a few seconds, torn again between wants and instinct, before deciding that wants mattered more.
And this was what she wanted.
Who was he to refuse her?
He sat up and grasped her hand again, accepting the crab, his lips tickling her fingers. It sent a slight pleasant tingle up Momo’s arm.
Momo beamed, satisfied that she got him to eat and for the slight kiss on her fingertips.
Only for that satisfaction to falter when she realized she couldn’t move her hand. Okarun had it once again, and refused to let go.
“Okarun!” she half whined, half scolded.
“I want more food, Momo-chan,” Okarun lightly demanded, opening his mouth expectantly.
“I need both my hands!” she snapped.
“But I want to hold your hand, Momo-chan.”
“Okaruuuun!”

MOMOKARUN - roomies
ੈ♡˳ a continuation of my "roomies head cannons" post (if u haven't read it yet, you should totally go read it either before or after you read this bc it's fire if i may say so myself.
notes: 2.8k words. warning(s):
ੈ♡˳
music was thumping in their ears. they weren't at a party or anything. they were just in momo's new bedroom. well, not new new. momo had lived there a good three months already. with her (low-key fine) roomie.
the roomie in question was in his bedroom. no music of his own. he was mostly just involuntarily listening the fast bass line of whatever the hell momo and her friends were listening to. honestly, ken was getting a little irritated. this was his one night out of the week that he had to study and relax. every other day, he was practicing with his club or going to work. he liked living with momo, but times like these made him wish he had taken advantage of the roommate matching resources. he just sighed and grabbed his noise cancelling ear buds. if he had to listen to something, it was gonna be something he wanted to listen to.
"I don't know, girl! he's hot stuff!" muko said loudly while looking in the mirror and pulling her hair into different hairstyles. "y'all haven't ever even flirted a little?"
momo threw a pillow at her girlfriend and rolled her eyes. "dude. if you haven't noticed, he's a total nerd."
muko and miko both deadpanned and turned to momo. "girl. if you haven't noticed, that's literally your type." muko stated. then miko piped up.
"also, I don't know who you think you are! did you just forget that you two freaks are studying the same nerdy occult stuff!"
"well, yea! but he's studying aliens and all that UFO bullshit! i'm studying genuine stuff: spirits and the supernatural!" momo said proudly.
her friends deadpanned again. "right... right..."
"whatever. you two are studying- what is it again? dress up games?" she insulted.
miko whipped around. "bitch! I don't wanna hear that noise whenever you step out wearing something made by us two. and you'll look totally hot in it, too."
momo chuckled, applying a big false eyelash to top off her gyaru makeup look. all three of the girls were practicing their skills. since they were finally allowed to wear makeup out and about everyday. muko wore it anyway, but boy, did she stay in detention.
"honestly, momo. you could use more practice." muko blurted out, a plan flowering into her mind.
"um, rude! you couldn't have said that a little nicer?" momo whined, staring at her makeup in a handheld mirror and working hard to decipher what exactly she was doing wrong.
"i'm just sayin', it might help to practice on a fresh face..." muko said, raising her eyebrows at miko. momo just cocked her head to the side, confused.
miko smiled mischievously. "yea... maybe that cute roomie of yours would be up to letting you practice on his mug."
momo rolled her eyes, touching up her eyeliner. "yea right. okarun would never agree to that. he's kinda uptight."
the girls dropped their jaws. "okarun?! what the shit kinda name is that?"
momo blushed. "well, that's not his real name. it's just a nickname I gave to him since I can't stand to hear to stupid name." the girls stared at her, urging her to continue. momo sighed big and loud. "ugh! his real name is... ken takakura."
they busted out laughing, jumping on to the bed next to her. they shook her around and hit each other, trying to recover from what momo just said.
"girl, are you serious! you're living with a ken takakura and you're not asking him out already?!" muko shouted. momo shoved her hands over her mouth, afraid ken okarun would hear. "give him a chance!" she said, muffled.
"seriously, momo. don't sell yourself short. you're a cute girl and ken seems like a sweetie. start off easy. ask to do his makeup tonight."
"tonight?! but I thought you two were sleeping over..." momo pouted.
the girls grabbed their overnight bags and bedazzled phones, which had cute little charms hanging off of them. "not anymore! you've got a mission to accomplish tonight. see ya!"
and with that, the two girls left. momo was sitting on her bed, wanting so badly to scream and chase them down. but she didn't want to disturb okarun. her phone rang, causing her to jump. it was miko.
"what?!" momo grumbled loudly into her phone.
"if you don't call us back tonight with an update on how everything went down, we're totally coming back tomorrow and talking to ken takakura ourselves."
momo groaned out, slamming her phone shut and then throwing it down on her bed. it couldn't hurt to ask. the worst that could happen was that okarun would say no, then momo could go to bed. but what if he said yes? she would have to sit super close to him and touch his face a ton and stare at his super cute face. ugh! she really didn't want to do this, but at the same time... sitting close to him and touching him and staring at his super cute face didn't sound horrible. who was she kidding? it sounded perfect. momo sighed. she slowly got up and trudged into her bathroom. she spent a good ten minutes removing her makeup, washing her face, and applying some skincare products. she spent the silent time thinking about how to go about this in the least awkward way. asking wasn't super awkward, but actually doing the makeup would be. she couldn't handle his big doe eyes staring at her the whole time.
that's it! she would ask to practice eye makeup on okarun! that way, his eyes would have to be shut the majority of the time.
"alright..." momo sighed, her makeup bag in tote. "let's get this over with."
she stepped quietly through their common area and tiptoed down his hallway. she kinda hoped he was sleeping.
softly, momo knocked a few times on his door. no answer. confused, she pressed her ear against his door, and knocked again. still no answer. his lights were on so he couldn't be sleeping. was he just ignoring her on purpose? without thinking, she just pushed his bedroom door open.
there he was. laying on his bed. shirtless. of course he was shirtless. stupid muko. stupid miko. momo stared at him. he had his arm covering his eyes, a hand resting on his toned abdomen. he also had... ear buds in. seriously? momo groaned and shuffled toward him. she smacked him on the arm.
okarun jumped up. he pulled his ear bud out and sat up straight. putting his glasses back on, he looked up at momo. "hey miss ayase. did you need my help with something?"
she stood in front of him, head turned to the side and refusing to look at him. "um, no. well, yes, actually. would you be willing to let me practice some eye makeup on you? I know it's not super manly or whatever, but miko says i'll get better at it if I practice on a fresh face. it's stupid but you're the only person I could ask. those two bitches conveniently left right after making the suggesting it."
okarun took out the second ear bud and stood up, standing a little close to momo. she stiffened. "yea, sure. if it's important to you, i'd be happy to help."
"cool." momo mumbled. they stood their for a second in awkward silence. "um, could you put a shirt on real quick. i'll be waiting on the couch..."
okarun blushed and chuckled nervously. "yea... uh, sorry. i'll be a out in a jiffy."
miss ayase spun around on her heels after ken shut the door. once he was alone, he pinched the bridge of his nose, embarrassed. jiffy. what does that even mean? and why would he stand so close to this girl shirtless? he could've made her uncomfortable. that was the last thing ken wanted. they got along really well, other than the occasional argument over running shoes or stolen food. they spent a lot of time together, studying or sharing meals. sometimes it felt like the two of them were already couple in ken's mind. they did just about everything couples did, safe for the romantic stuff. of course, ken thought about the romantic stuff, more often than he'd admit. she was pretty and, despite being the most stubborn person on the planet, she was a good person to be around. she was extremely supportive and always made sure ken was taking care of himself. she would make him hearty dinners the day before he had a track meet and would stay up extra late to study with him if he was feeling academically insecure about a certain subject. and she was pretty. ken didn't realize it, but his gaze on her lingered. he adored her messy hair, the way it flicked up and the way her bangs shaped her face when she pulled her hair up. he also liked the way she dressed. very comfy and casual, but she just made it look good. she had a nice body, too. a little curvy, with long legs and a little more muscle than you'd expect. ken felt like she would fit in his hands just right-
god, ken! don't be a pervert!
he shook his head, as if he could fling the flush of pink off his cheeks. ken isn't sure if he can handle sitting so close to miss ayase. he was already getting worked up just thinking about her-
"okarun?" momo called, a little worried he fell asleep.
ken slapped himself on the face and sighed. be normal.
"sorry, I just needed to rinse my face off." he lied.
okarun plopped down next to momo. he turned the TV on and flicked through the channels until he got to their most watched channel- sci-fi. an alien invasion movie played quietly as okarun sat and waited for momo to get her makeup sorted. he watched her hands intently as she thumbed through different eye liners and brushes.
he wanted them to hold his face already.
"you ready?" momo asked.
"yes." okarun answered. he was a little quick with his response.
"alright." momo uncapped a black felt-tip eyeliner pen, giving it a small shake. her eyes flickered up to his, a small feeling of nervousness bubbling up inside of her. "try not to move too much. this would totally suck to get in your eyes."
finally, her non dominant hand cupped okarun's cheek, holding him still and positioning his head properly. she began applying it underneath his eyes. they were quiet as she mapped out a shape. then, she applied a thick line to his upper lash line. she took a moment to regain her composure since his eyes were finally closed for this part. his face was totally soft in her hands and the pout she was squeezing onto his lips was absolutely adorable. momo zoned out, staring at his cute features for about ten seconds. okarun, curious, opened his doe eyes, causing momo to snap out of it.
she snatched her hand away from his face, digging through her makeup bag to avoid eye contact.
"I didn't know you were so into makeup..." okarun said, trying to ease the awkwardness.
"uh... yea. I wanted to wear it throughout highschool, but I didn't want to go through all of the hassle of getting in trouble every other day. that was more muko's speed..." momo said, pulling out a white concealer. "look up for me."
okarun did as told as she applied the white concealer right under his eye. she fanned it with her hands so it would dry faster. he grabbed a mirror, curious to see what she was doing to him.
"this looks cool!" he encouraged. "is working on a 'fresh face' helping you?"
momo smiled at him. "yea... you're a good canvas."
they stared at each other for a moment before momo broke eye contact to grab some eye shadow. "wanna pick out your color?"
"sure. uh... how about blue?"
momo dipped into a pan of pastel blue eye shadow. he closed his eyes, and she dragged the pigment across his lids until she was satisfied. then she added some fake lashes to his top and bottom lashes and topped everything off with a little glitter. she popped the cap back on the glitter eye shadow and plopped a hand held mirror into okarun soft hands.
"what do you think?"
he looked at his reflection. "as far as I know, this looks pretty good. I don't know much about makeup but it looks nice to me. all though, when you replicate this on yourself, you should do pink instead." he paused, contemplating on whether not he should keep talking. "the pink would look good on you... just about anything looks good on you."
momo's eye widened, the eye shadow falling out of her hand and hitting the ground. okarun quickly picked it up for her.
"are you okay?"
"you think i look good?" momo asked.
okarun scratched the back of his neck, his face turning pink. "yea... i've always thought you were pretty, miss ayase."
her heart skipped a beat.
"thanks." she mumbled nervously, trying to think of something to say. "you're pretty, too."
okarun's eye widened this time, then he couldn't help but let out a laugh. momo shoved her face in her hands.
"no! I didn't mean pretty. I just meant, like-"
"any good looks of mine are thanks to you. you did me up nice." okarun smiled at her. momo blushed.
"not all of them." she admitted. "you have cute hair."
she brought her slender hand up to his head and let one of his curls wrap around her finger. okarun leaned into her touch unconsciously. she ran her fingers through his messy hair until she got to the undercut at the nape of his neck.
"i especially like this, here." her nails grazed the short hair, causing okarun to screw his eyes shut and shutter. he could sit and let her play with his hair all night. he kept his eyes closed and leaned more into her touch, his lips falling against her wrist. unconsciously, he wrapped his fingers around her arm, pulling her palm to his lips and planting a soft kiss there.
the two nerds froze. momo snatched her arm away and okarun scooted away from her entirely.
"i'm so sorry, miss ayase! I don't know why I did that." he shoved his face into his palms, muffling his speech. "I'm an awkward guy-"
"that's okay!" momo said a little louder than intended, trying to cut him off before she lost her mind. "here! there are some makeup removing wipes. i'm gonna head to bed. I'll see you in the morning. oh, um. don't forget to rinse after using these. ok. goodnight."
and with that, momo snatched up her makeup bag and scrambled into her bedroom. she tossed her bag to the side and plopped facedown onto her bed. after a moment, she dialed tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum. she couldn't have those too screwing up this awkward situation any worse.
meanwhile, ken stood in his bathroom, scrubbing his eyes of the makeup. why did he do that? what was he thinking? momo could've slapped him across the face, or worse; laughed in his face! he probably made her so uncomfortable. why did he have to screw up their perfectly normal living situation.
he made sure to rinse his face off, then crept into bed. he laid on his back, staring at the ceiling as if momo's reciprocated feelings lie hidden in it. okarun liked momo. he wanted to be with her- more than roommates. he wanted them to kiss, and cuddle, and go on dates. he wanted to pay for her meals and surprise her with cool hidden talents. he wanted to see her dressed up, her hair in that ponytail he liked so much. he wanted to sleep next to her; to hold her close to him, easing her restlessness and soaking in her warmth. he wanted to wake up next to her, plant a kiss on her warm cheek and then head into the kitchen and put on her morning coffee.
but did she want any of that with him?
momo tossed her phone to the floor, still processing the events. she stared at her palm, burning a hold into the spot where okarun's lips were only a little while ago. it tingled. she wanted more. momo wanted more of okarun. she wished he would've kissed her on the lips and that they spent the night on the couch together, a stupid sci-fi movie quietly in the background. she wanted play with his hair and see the way he melted into her touch again. she wanted to go on adventures with him, make memories and share experiences with just them. she wanted to make him meals everyday and attend his track meets, so she could be the loudest one in the audience, cheering him on.
but did he want any of that with her?
duh! these two morons. as book smart as they are, you would think they'd be decent at catching a damn clue. maybe they'd figure it out in the morning.
