Kinda chewing on Omen and Crepuscular’s relationship right now…man they’re complicated and I wanna talk about them 😭
Even independent from Crepuscular, Omen is a pretty fascinating character to me. At first I didn’t like him because he felt like a bad stereotype, but character development saved him for me so much. He’s a really good representation of positive masculinity, even while he’s doing things that many of the more violent or problematically masculine characters do. He manages to do these things without having to be toxically masculine about any of it, and I’m proud of him for that. And a lot of his ability to do that came from Crepuscular.
Because while I definitely think that their relationship is toxic, Crepuscular was still hugely important for Omen being able to develop his own opinions and do what he wanted instead of being a shy kid who trips over his own two feet. Being with Valkyrie and Skulduggery and helping in their missions definitely started him out by giving him a taste of what the adventuring was like, but every single time he sort of…went back to his normal, boring life afterwards. He always felt like Skulduggery and Valkyrie needed to call on him before he could do anything useful.
Enter Crepuscular, who has so many emotional issues that he successfully manages to hide from Omen by actually being interested in what Omen has to say and encouraging him to do more risky and adventurous things. By this point, Omen has spent his entire life being an idiot who nobody takes seriously and who’s inferior to his brother, so he eats up what Crepuscular is feeding him and starts doing little rulebreaking things, like helping his brother get a knife he needs to kill the King of the Darklands. Small things, and stuff that Omen doesn’t have to get too involved in to help.
And then his brother kills the King of the Darklands a year early, freaks out about it, and suddenly stops helping out people around the school, even when that’s been what people depended on him for for years. There’s suddenly nobody to do it. There’s an empty niche in the school’s metaphorical ecosystem that Auger used to dominate but is now too traumatized to.
And then Omen is there with Crepuscular encouraging him and helping him grow and be more adventurous and be more independent. Since Omen understands what his brother must be going through right now and also understands that the people around them need help, he takes it upon himself to help them (while also pretending that it’s Auger who’s doing it). And Omen circa Resurrection would never have been brave or strong enough to do that, but by this point he’s been following around Crepuscular long enough that he’s actually brave enough and organized enough to figure out what needs to get done, sneak out and talk to Crepuscular, and then actually get up and do it.
And then Damocles Creed becomes Supreme Mage and suddenly they’re living in an incredibly fascist and restrictive state. Does this stop Omen? Hell no. The boy becomes a little punk who investigates suspicious activity around the school and talks to his friends (and sometimes other students) about how they’ll escape this situation.
And then he picks a fight with Valkyrie, who’s an evil god at this point, and tells both her and Skulduggery that they’re awful people (and rightly so). Again, Resurrection Omen would have passed out at the idea of disrespecting these two in their normal forms, but two years later he’s perfectly willing to yell at a god with a streak of breaking people’s wrists.
Crepuscular was a bad person who was produced by circumstances so bad even he knew they were fucked up and he was helping Omen for his own emotional gain, but that doesn’t prevent the fact that he gave Omen the same thing that Skulduggery gave Valkyrie all those years ago: a safe space to test himself out and spread his wings in a way that felt comfortable. And even if Crepuscular was simply doing it to compare himself to Skulduggery, it legitimately helped Omen so much and allowed him to become a more emotionally put-together person than Auger, who had always been considered the better one.
And even after Omen decides to break off his friendship with Crepuscular, that bravery still lingers. He leads a goddamn rebellion in his school and the other kids accept him as their leader and begin taking orders from him.
And after it’s all over? Omen decides to go to art school with a girl he met while on a mission with Crepuscular. Crepuscular was such a bad person but he helped Omen so much and I honestly wouldn’t change much about how their relationship went.
And I honestly think that Crepuscular didn’t hate him either. Aside from Omen giving him what he wanted, Crepuscular chose to go back and ask for Omen’s forgiveness even after he claims to have proved himself better than Skulduggery, and Omen chose to go on one last mission with him because Omen is a sweet person who is easily peer pressured and Crepuscular knew that.
In short, their relationship is toxic but developmentally important for Omen and this post mostly turned into me ranting about Omen’s character development, which I’m not mad about.

I have finished A Mind Full Of Murder in two days.
It has actual detective work, good stakes and is very well written.
But obviously, Landy couldnt help himself at the end so everything had to go back into A Big Scheme™ that will Change The World Beyond Comprehension™.
Genuinely, I really liked how small it all was and then it became really really big again.
Spoilers ahead.
I actually appreciated the fallout of a civilisation being discussed, all the changes the sanctuaries had to make and the friggin acknowledgement that China Sorrows and Damocles Creed were honest to god dictators. Ghastly as Grand Mage is excellent, having Alice be conflicted about her sister and her place in life too.
I missed Omen. I dont know what happened to him but I hope hes fine? He had no mention at all, so did I like... Forget that something bad happened to him. Or was he really not deemed relevant enough for a sideline mention after 6 books.
All in all. Its good. It didnt make me laugh much but its an actual detective novel for once and its possible to think along with what is happening and trying to figure it out for yourself.

This is Nefarian talking to Mevolent after Serafina's death and no one can convince me otherwise.
"You're scaring us and all of us- ...some of us love you Achilles, it's not much but there's proof" "The self is not so weightless, nor whole and unbroken Remember the pact of our youth Where you go, I'm going, so jump and I'm jumping Since there is no me without you Soldier on, Achilles, Achilles, come down Won't you get up off, get up off the roof?"
Ngl I like the idea that whatever killed Serafina killed her siblings also. All apart from Creed. Ironically he lives bc he didn't follow Mev, bc he wasn't there when the attack happened.
Mev despises him for living when his wife does not and Creed loathes him bc he blames him for the death of his siblings.
The (semi-)duet part is Creed taking his anger out on Mev while Nefarian is defending him.
Creed: You want the acclaim, the mother of mothers Nefarian: It's not worth it, Achilles Creed: More poignant than fame or the taste of another Nefarian: Don't listen, Achilles Creed: But be real and just jump, you dense motherfucker Nefarian: You're worth more, Achilles Creed: You will not be more than a rat in the gutter Nefarian: So much more than a rat Creed: You want my opinion, my opinion you've got Nefarian: No one asked your opinion Creed: You asked for my counsel, I gave you my thoughts Nefarian: No one asked for your thoughts Creed: Be done with this now and jump off the roof Nefarian: Be done with this now and get off the roof
I just love the thought of Nef defending and comforting his master in the beginning, in his hours of need after all the times Mev had protected him, had saved him. Before Mev became more and more unhinged out of grief and Nef no longer regonised his old friend in him anymore. Just a husk of the great man he had once been now.
Oh, what irony that a man known for the carnage left in his path would be undone by such a gentle thing as love.
how the most dangerous thing is to love

I need to talk about the insane amount of service derek has given us about damocles creed of all people. If I took a picture of every time he did it, I'd have a whole collage. Every time he's mentioned he's talking about how tall he is, how built he is, how heavy he is, how tight his shirts are, how big his hands are. He's even thrown in a line where he needlessly mentioned him having thick fingers. We've had him after working out, we've had him after fixing his car and now I've just read a scene where he's working on a machinery project and whips his shirt off to wipe the sweat from his underarms. My jaw dropped.
I had a thing for him from the second he first walked in, I'm into bald men I was there for mr bliss, I was there for ghastly and at first I thought this was just a me thing but it straight up isn't it's so blatantly obvious. He has not done this with any other character why him. I don't. what.

Kea Ves Backstory
Kassandra grew up in a family of sorcerers. Her mother died when she was 2 years old in an car accident. Her older brother Kaveh taught her martial arts and elemental magic. But her father, Timo, wanted her to become an energy thrower and taught her energy throwing. Since he was quite strict she didn't like energy throwing. It always ended with her storming out the room. According to Kassandra energy throwing hurted her. As she was 12, Kassandra tried new disciplines. It wasn't a problem since she was home-schooled. She experimented around until she saw vitakinesis in action. She was mesmerized and amazed by it, by how this person healed another person so easily. Therefore she decided to become a vita at the age of 15 and took her taken name: Kea Ves. She learned vitkinesis from her mentor Ash Nova, a vitakinetic of the german sanctuary and elemental magic from her brother. At the age of 19 she experienced her surge. Luckily, she was home when it happend and not outside. After the surge, her magic discipline is vitakinesis and one hair strand turned white.
After working for the german sanctuary as a healer, she heard about the incidents in Ireland. She offered her help when she heard that Vangeous is free, but the irish sanctuary declined. Kea kept and eye on Ireland ever since and offered her help to the irish sanctuary whenever she could. FInally she got accepted. As she arrives in Ireland she hears more details about the incident: The Remnants are freed from the room of the Midnight Hotel and possess people. Kea helps the irish sanctuary fighting them off, but gets possessed by a Remnant in the process. The Remnant leaves the body as it got forced back into the Soul Catcher. She stayed in Ireland to help where she can. Her hair turned more and more white over time. After all the problems, including Erskine Ravel, the Warlocks and Darquesse, she returns to the german sanctuary where she continues working as a vita, but visits Ireland to check if everything was alright (it wasn't), but is forced to come back to Germany by Supreme Mage Damocles Creed. Kea rebeled but got banned from Ireland by Creed.
Now the Creed isn't Supreme Mage anymore, she returned to Ireland where she kept working for the sanctuary as a Vitakinetic (and is sometimes called into the Corrival Academy bc some kids hurt themself)

Kierre of the unveiled hcs
100% the spoiled youngest sibling
Got away with everything when she was younger
Wasnt close with her parents, as they didnt raise her, they hired nannies and tutors for that
She was an oops baby and was far younger than the rest of her siblings
She looked up to her siblings a lot
Rune in particular
She was taught hand to hand combat by Rune
Her parents werent abusive or anything
They just werent planning to have another child so she was left alone a lot
She was born during the war and was under 100 when it ended
In her teens she moved to ireland
Because her siblings were there to fight in the war and serafina lived there permanently after marrying mevolent
During this time religion was more forced on her as she lived in mevolents castle
She was the least devoted to the faceless ones out of her family but tried to not let it show in case she was punished for her blasphemy
Liked mevolent because serafina seemed more like herself with him
Mevolent, on the other hand, did not know how to interact with a teenager at all and ignored her most of the time
She fought for a bit towards the end of the war, but after mevolent died serafina wouldnt let her fight anymore, fearing that she would be killed too

Real talk: Rasputin is actually the illegitimate son of Mevolent by a Russian hoe. That's why he's so tall, scary, hard to kill and seemingly possesses mystical abilities
Considering that Rasputin was a hardcore Christian with massive hobo vibes he is more likely Creed's son. He is so hard to kill bc he inherited his father's plot armour.

Im still not over the fact that Damocles Creed is named Damocles Creed.
Damocles.
Creed.
This isnt even foreshadowing, this is forelightning. This is explicitly slapping the reader over the cheek and saying "Are you ready yet? Are you ready? For the Creed of Damocles to come swinging down?"
I mean. I was.
Just.
Still stupid.
