Pretty Terrible || The BRE x Reader

Summary: You're a pretty terrible gamer. You still try, though. For the sake of your partners.

You sit on the couch surrounded by your partners, Dakota, Mia, Shayna, and Jessamyn, all eagerly clutching their controllers as they prepare for a gaming marathon. They've been trying to teach you how to play for ages, but despite their best efforts, you're still pretty terrible at it.

But today, you're determined to give it your best shot. After all, gaming is something they all love, and you want to show your support by joining in on the fun. So you grab a controller and try to follow along as they explain the rules and controls of the game.

As the game progresses, you quickly realize just how out of your depth you are. Your character is constantly getting taken out by the others, and try as you might, you just can't seem to get the hang of it.

But despite your lack of skill, you find yourself having a blast. The laughter and camaraderie shared between you and your partners is infectious, and even though you're losing pretty badly, you can't help but enjoy yourself.

After a while, though, you decide that it's time to throw in the towel. You've had your fill of gaming for the day, and besides, you'd much rather spend the rest of the afternoon cuddled up with your partners.

They tease you mercilessly for your lack of gaming prowess, but you take it all in good humor. After all, it's all in good fun, and you know they're just teasing you because they care.

Except for Jessamyn, that is. She's always been the more nurturing one of the group, and as you set down your controller and snuggle up in her lap, she wraps her arms around you protectively, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of your head.

"Aw, don't worry about it, babe," she murmurs, her voice soft and reassuring. "You may not be the best gamer, but you're still the best cuddler."

You can't help but smile at her words, feeling a warm glow of affection spread through your chest. As you settle in for the rest of the afternoon, wrapped in the arms of your partners, you know that even if you're not great at gaming, you're still surrounded by love, and that's all that really matters.

Prairie Rattlesnake

Name: Prairie Rattlesnake

Fatalities: Most of 7,000 recorded snake bites in America, fewer than 5 people die each year 

Conservation Status: Least Concern

As one of the most infamous snakes that prowls North America, being printed on everything from Levii’s Jeans to cowboy boots and sunglasses, rattlesnakes play a huge role in western, southern, and Native American culture. These rattlers are native to the Great Plains of the United States (Montana, the Dakotas, Texas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma) and stretches into parts of Canada and Mexico. Lurking prairies (hence the name), grasslands, brushes, and caves, the prairie rattlesnake is an ambush hunter. Sneaking up on mice, birds, and other rodents, humans don’t seem to be on the menu for this cowboy killer. Slithering along the banks of streams and forests, the prairie rattlesnake, typically tan and greenish brown in color, has an iconic head shape: a spade. 

A huge part of the folklore, rhymes, and stories woven into American history and the brand of the Wild West, rattlesnakes have sunk their fangs deep into cultures and traditions for centuries. One tradition involves weather-forecasting in Texas; if you flip a dead rattlesnake and it lands with it back up, rain is coming soon. However, if it lands with its belly up, that means drought continues. I’m not sure how accurate this is, but it’s probably more accurate than the apple weather app. In addition to weather-telling, the rattlesnake supposedly also has medicinal properties as told through works in literature. If you had tuberculosis, you were supposed to cut off the head of a rattlesnake, put it in a bottle of rum, and drink it. If you had rheumatoid arthritis, you were supposed to wear a belt of rattlesnake skin. A Native American legend is about a Native American who trained a group of rattlesnakes to play as instruments in a song with him. 

However, don’t be fooled by its popularity; it can still pack a punch with a single bite. The prairie rattlesnake’s venom contains both hemotoxins and neurotoxins to create a potent cocktail of debilitating effects for anyone who’s unlucky enough to cross paths with a prairie rattlesnake, but even more unluckier to get bit. Rattlesnake venom can cause myonecrosis, or localized muscle death, which occurs when enough blood cannot reach the muscle. Necrosis starts spreading rapidly throughout the body from the bite site. Another effect of the venom is coagulopathy, or the body’s inability to clot blood. Excessive bleeding occurs. However, most rattlesnake bites are not directly from the venom’s hemotoxic and neurotoxic effects; they’re due to severe anaphylactic shock or inability to get access to proper anti-venom and care. Severe anaphylactic shock is when the body has a severe allergic reaction, causing blood pressure drops and difficulties breathing. Getting a severe allergic reaction to rattlesnake venom is very rare, but it’s a risk for people who have previously gotten bit by one. 

Let's say that that snake does rattle you with its venom, do not do any of these things. Rattlesnake venom is very fast acting, and any delay to get medical help could cost you an arm or leg (literally and figuratively, rattlesnake antivenom in the United States is expensive :( ). Do not put ice on the bite, do not try to suck the venom out of it, do not tie off the wound or use a tourniquet. If you get bit, seek medical help immediately. 

While no one wants to wear denim on a hike, that pair of Levii’s jeans could significantly reduce the amount of venom penetrated through the material into your body.

Summary: Christmas morning with Shayna and Dakota.

The anticipation of Christmas morning filled the air as you, Shayna, and Dakota gathered in matching pajamas, ready to celebrate the holiday together. Convincing Shayna to wear the matching PJs had taken some persuasion, but the sight of all three of you in the coordinated outfits brought a smile to your faces.

The room was filled with excitement as you exchanged gifts, laughter filling the air as each present was unwrapped. Shayna and Dakota's surprised expressions brought joy to your heart as they opened their gifts, their eyes lighting up with happiness.

Shayna's tough exterior softened as she unwrapped a thoughtful gift, a rare grin escaping her lips. Dakota's infectious laughter echoed through the room as she unwrapped a playful present from Shayna. And amidst the festive chaos, you felt a warm sense of contentment, cherishing the bond you shared.

Once the gift-giving frenzy settled, the aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the air as you decided to move to the kitchen. Dakota took charge, effortlessly leading the cookie-making adventure. Shayna, initially hesitant, soon joined in, her competitive nature coming to the forefront as she perfected the cookie shapes with surprising precision.

the graveyard shift

set in 2011 in the usa's hidden magical underbelly, mostly the town of sonderwood, north dakota. focuses on a massive necromancy-based criminal organization known as the graveyard and the characters who end up wrapped in its decade-old conspiracies in their attempts to either escape it or go further in. current fav <333333 but also heavily in development

the death spiral

set after a magical apocalypse that wiped out society, creating a supercontinent where creatures with anomalous abilities called harbingers run amok. the capitalist country at the center of the continent, muezihia, is haunted by an ancient prophecy that speaks of a prophecy hero who will save society by bringing some form of mass collapse or upheaval and, later, rebirth. the only problem: the prophecy keeps repeating no matter how many times it's supposedly fulfilled.

kit (she/her): suspiciously early prophecy hero candidate who's spent her life concealing that candidacy in hopes of leading a normal life for a while. i'm sure you can guess how that goes

liz (she/her (during the entire story at least bc there is no way she's not an egg)): the 13-year-old girl in question. horrifically isolated irl and going thru some shit online (aka the place she considers her only safe haven); downloads nemesis antivirus out of desparation

nellie (she/they/it): liz's sentient game avatar who is strangely fine-tuned to be a perfect friend for her. fiercely protective and takes her job as an eliminator of online threats extremely seriously.

again i'm not going to go super in-depth on this bc the subject matter is too heavy but know it's generally about online abuse and contains a lot of deconstruction of revenge fantasies/the idea of revenge and the responsibility that abuse victims may have towards preventing abuse and protecting people like them 👍

the consumption of lotus institute

super wip but it's about a silly facility full of animal people, the staff who manage the facility and the ai who runs the whole show. again hopefully this is gonna end up a larger universe so not much of an overarching plot yet but the current main story branch is about the aftermath of an incident where adult humans are kidnapped from the surface by rogue staff and fed to the ai to be experimented on.

main characters (for the current story branch):

minerva madigan (she/they): "lead caretaker" of the facility, aka she's the head of the department managing the animal people & their wellbeing. prioritizes keeping the peace & keeping people happy at any cost. she's trying her best but ooooh god girl........

conan (she/her): survivor of the adult experiments; half-grey wolf. reluctantly took the facility's offer to live a life of luxury with them as an apology though she's got a bunch of weird feelings about the handling of the situation that she's pretending aren't there.

pallas (she/her): only other survivor of the adult experiments and minerva's ex before all that shit happened. EXTREMELY pissed at the staff for their poor handling of the whole experiment situation. disappeared into the depths of the facility where the ai inhabits.

the ai (temporary name) (it/its): sentient but non-sapient. this thing is an animals. driven solely by its own curiosities. has to be constantly babysat by the staff

'Let's call a spade a spade; anything Andrew Scott touches these days turns to gold.

So we were really excited to find out that he is starring in a brand new eight part series on Netflix that's due to land on April 4.

RIPLEY is based on the Patricia Highsmith's best-selling Tom Ripley novels set in the 1960s. Andrew plays the lead character, a grifter who is hired by a rich man to travel to Italy to get his drifter son to return home.

Of course, it's not a straight forward task, and involves a complex life of deceit, fraud and even murder.

Tom Ripley is a career criminal, con artist and serial killer who gets away with his crimes.

The series also stars Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood and Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf. It's written, produced and directed by Hollywood hot shot Steven Zaillian, the man behind hits including The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo and The Irishman.

The Tom Ripley book series was also the inspiration behind the hit movie The Talented Mr Ripley starring Oscar winner and Dalkey fan Matt Damon.
