A few things which are “canon” somewhere for people who are worried they’re stretching it too far
Arthur was killed by a giant cat.
Arthur killed the cat.
Arthur didn’t fight the cat. Kay did.
Kay and Bedivere use salmon as taxis.
Lucan is half giant, half lion. (This Lucan, Lucano in the original Italian, is evil and not related to Bedivere).
King Arthur raided the land of the dead.
The human knight Caradoc Briefbras has three half siblings: a dog, a horse, and a pig.
A large portion of Arthur’s troops was killed a while before Camlann by his nephew’s attack ravens in self-defense. Arthur and said nephew were playing chess at the time and neither did much to stop it.
Merlin retired peacefully and went to live in the countryside with Taliesin.
Wherever Arthur walks, plants die. They don’t grow back for years.
Arthur had a spunky (half?) brother who died in battle after making a mysterious oath.
Dagonet is more or less able to run the kingdom when Arthur is gone. His biggest error is overspending on mercenaries.
Guinevere has an evil almost identical twin half-sister.
Hector beat up all the best knights except for Galahad while possessed by a demon.
Gawain plays tennis.
Gawain has used a chessboard as a weapon.
Near the start of his reign, Arthur left Lot in charge of the kingdom and went on a quest with a sassy parrot.
Gawain or Galahad succeeded Arthur as king.

KING ARTHUR (2004) set design appreciation: ― Hadrian's Wall: The Roundtable [3/?] inspired by @lady-arryn wonderful set design series [x]
KA20TH CELEBRATION | Day 4 - Home
AN: How can I do this series and not include The Roundtable? Gosh the empty seats are a gut punch to the heart. So many men sat around this table but only six survived. So many years lost to an Empire that hey were forced to serve and to cause they didn't even believe in. But they all believed in Arthur and that's all that matters. (P.S. I love that Arthur and Lancelot are sitting next to each other 🤭)
Also to anyone who's writing fics for this film, feel free to use this has visual inspiration if you're struggling with imagery or what-not💖

King Arthur 20th anniversary celebration, 1-7 July 2024
King Arthur turns 20 on 7 July 2024! This is an interest check for a potential celebration event to be held here on Tumblr and on AO3 in the week running up to the anniversary - please let me know if you're interested! I'm thinking of a week of prompts, much like other themed fests, with a few prompts per day (home, love, loyalty, etc) and some alternates.
If enough people are interested I'll make an event blog, and if anyone fancies helping me mod the event, that would be great. Also, if anyone out there with graphic skills would like to make some banners, that would also be awesome, since (as you can probably tell) I have the graphic skills of a brick.
There is already an AO3 collection for the anniversary, run by the lovely sasha_b, so if anyone wants to post anything there outside the first week in July please feel free!
And if you're not familiar with the movie - if you like angsty OT3s, ride-and/or-die brothers in arms, badass women warriors, a lot of UST and a good bit of snark, this may be the movie for you! It's not exactly faithful to the legends, it suffers from Smurfette syndrome and doesn't get anywhere near even a Bechdel test pass, and it does have its wobbly story issues and a good few daft plotholes, but it's enormous amounts of fun and has so much scope for fannish interpretations, transformations and extensions. The cast includes Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, Ioan Gruffudd, Joel Edgerton, Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgård, Til Schweiger and Ken Stott, many of whom went on to much bigger things...
So...come and join the little fandom that could as we celebrate TWENTY YEARS of our beloveds!
Please reblog and signal boost - and if you were in the fandom when the movie was released please come and say hi! I was going by another name at the time (trinityc) and I'd love to get back in touch!

the more i learn about arthur's court jester dagonet - namely late 19th/early 20th century depictions of him - the more i wonder whether merlin from the bbc show was directly inspired by those versions of dagonet just as much as (if not more than) the actual merlin. he ticks so many of the same boxes:
- butt of many jokes, yet beloved by all the "good guys"
- arthur and gawain especially love him and give him responsibilities and titles he is not qualified for
- "wise fool"
- interesting connections/interactions with the actual merlin
- somehow simultaneously disastrous and competent when put in charge
- there's a story where he desperately wishes he were a knight worthy of finding the holy grail only for the grail to appear to him in secret! he uses it to save lancelot's life and never tells anyone as the private knowledge that he's worthy is enough. tell me this doesn't read like a bbc merlin episode
- seems to have some sort of pessimistic omniscience about How It All Ends. #doomer
- often depicted having deeper love and devotion for arthur than anyone else in the royal court
- which is sometimes illustrated by him being the last virtuous knight/court member/overall specialest boy upholding all the courtly standards as the rest of the men fall from grace
i learned this and a lot more using this extensive character page as a reading reference (much easier to read on a laptop/tablet, i suggest clicking the 'print' button and downloading the webpage as a pdf file to access it on a phone).
dagonet's transformation in the last few centuries from useless fool to subversive voice of reason is extremely fascinating; either the bbcm writers genuinely did use him for inspiration or character archetypes like dagonet and merlin emrys have just naturally found their place in arthuriana as western society moved on from the more traditional notions of chivalry

“Merlin is the best Arthurian legend character!”
“No, it’s Arthur!”
“No, it’s Lancelot!”
WRONG! Ya know who the REAL one is??? Sir Dagonet!”
YOU may like the funky wizard or the himbo knight, but MY man was Arthur’s cpurt jester before he was knighted AND fake kidnapped Lancelot for funsies AND killed a man cos he kidnapped his wife (and then subsequently went mad but it happens to us all)

Have you heard of the new post-Camlann Arthuriana book coming out soon? It's called "The Bright Sword"!
I had not so I just looked it up. I’ve never read Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians” but this premise rules.

I’m in the middle of Bernard Cornwell’s “The Warlord Chronicles” & I love Derfel; I’ve been streaming in my Arthurian Theater Server the show “The Adventures of Sir Lancelot” & I love Brian. I am PRO original characters in these stories & I love Palomides & Dagonet! Thank you for this recommendation I’m going to pre-order it asap.

KING ARTHUR (2004)!!! How could I forget to mention this in my list of favorite movies??? AHHHH. The best cast of knights EVER it is impossible to choose a favorite!
Thank you @missiemoosie for reminding me I am due for a rewatch of this magnificent and woefully underrated film! <3 It's so important I rectify this oversight that I'm making a new, separate post to recommend it!
I know many people take issue with the plot/premise of this adaptation, since it eliminates the magical elements, but I for one appreciated the different take on the legend. Script/story aside, the magnificent cast alone and terrific cinematography makes it well worth a watch!
To the un-initiated; behold this AMAZING CAST! (It's literally a buffet of hotties!)
Clive Owen as Arthur
Ioan Gruffudd as Lancelot
Mads Mikkelsen as Tristan
Joel Edgerton as Gawain
Hugh Dancy as Galahad
Ray Winstone as Bors
Ray Stevenson as Dagonet
Keira Knightley as Guinevere
I'm off to find posts of this to reblog now; and off to do another rewatch!

I ended up recycling two characters recently, repurposing them to be Ruckis and Geragera's Gaurdian Angels respectively. Gaurdian Angels being a race in OotS (creative name I know /sar)
