She stood in front of Tensen’s painting longer than she actually looked at it. Finally, she set a moth on its frame. She told herself the kind of lie that knows itself for what it is. Kestrel decided that it was better that Arin think this way of her. Yes. It had all been for the best.

Kahlan amnell and Cara mason , Kahlan is hurt in battle, and tries to hide her injuries, but ends up fainting in Cara's embrace

“Stop apologizing,” Cara growls low, pulling another tiny looped stitch taut. She doesn’t roll her eyes as she speaks—they stay trained on the task at hand—but the gesture is blatant in her clipped voice. “It’s not like this is the first time you’ve fainted on me.” With painstaking accuracy even by flicker-shadowed firelight, she slips the needle through again. Kahlan winces and bites down on the willow bark, then realizes bracing herself wasn’t necessary. It glides through the edges of torn skin at her shoulder with only a wisp of pain. “In fact, I believe it’s the fourth.”

This is careful work—Cara’s removed her gloves for it. Kahlan seldom sees her hands bare. When she does, it always straddles the line between jarring and captivating. They look just as delicate as the way she's stitching the Dacra slash where Kahlan's shoulder caps over the rest of her arm. No bruised knuckles, no callused palms. Just hands. Well-kept. And Kahlan has watched them act in aggression (righteous, now, so loyal it shines) over and over—but she still doesn't know what she expects them to really be.

The mending doesn't hurt but she's still woozy. So she keeps herself from going under again by saying, maybe a little clumsy in the throat, "You passed out with me, one of those times. And I didn't need to have my hand held like that for the other two."

"You offered it." A frown, a rougher tug than the last few. "And I'll remind you that once, I bled out from the neck, alone, for you."

For all of them, she means. Cara speaks in collectives. For Richard. Cara's here for him. Kahlan can convince herself of that at moments like this, when their gazes aren't aligned.

"Nobody asked you to do that."

Now Cara does roll her eyes.

"And nobody asked you to play at valor. Why didn't you tell anyone you'd been wounded?"

"I didn't want to slow us down." Kahlan can speak in collectives, too, though it's an excuse that tastes stale on her tongue.

It's also an excuse Cara doesn't abide. "So you decided to wait for Richard and the wizard to leave in pursuit of the Sisters...and slow just me down instead, pitching sideways and heaving your entire weight right into my arms?"

Kahlan could say: but you caught me. She could say: I know you’re teasing, but I felt safe. Kahlan usually says what she means but here, only soft, chagrined: "I'm sorry."

Cara sighs, a sharp sound that mixes too well with the crackling fire. She doesn't entertain the effort of further scolding. Just cuts the end of the catgut with her teeth and ties it off, apparently having finished the suturing without Kahlan noticing. Kahlan blinks down at the wound—safely sewn, now, not weeping blood and inviting infection anymore. She lifts her shoulder, a careful experiment, and it smarts but she no longer wants to keel over. It's a marked truth, one to be learned: aggressive and soothing can inhabit the same space. It's there in her chest before it blooms in her mind.

And here she figures Cara will blaze the needle clean in the embers, then put it back in her pack. That she'll slip her gloves back on and gruffly insist that Kahlan sleep, taking a long and stubborn watch. So it's an entire surprise when she does none of that—when her jaw tightens and she lets her eyes flicker up to meet Kahlan's instead, teal limned in ruddy amber glow.

"You're lucky the weapon struck where it did," she murmurs. Without hesitation, she strokes the tender inside of Kahlan's arm with the tip of her middle finger, feather light, from bicep to collarbone. Kahlan swallows, shivers, head swimming again in too much sensation. Heat rushes to her face. Watching unmarred skin travel over unmarred skin makes her feel more sensitive everywhere, more raw everywhere, than watching the sutures. Aggressive and soothing and...what else? "If it had opened you here instead, we'd be contending with the fallout of a very dramatic prophecy."

Kahlan speaks from beyond coherence. "Would've needed to burn it closed?"

"Likely."

"Why didn't you now." It doesn't come out as a question.

"Because you would've just fainted again, Kahlan. Besides, something leads me to believe that Richard wouldn't come upon that particular sight with any bit of gladness." And Kahlan's about to ask her to clarify when a thought strikes her almost visibly: eyes narrowing, mouth twitching in what could have been the very beginning of either a smirk or a scowl. "Tell me. Did he ever ask you about the scar I left on your thigh?"

It takes Kahlan a few clouded moments (from blood loss, from touch, Cara's fingers haven't left) to remember what she doesn't remember, the night she doesn't remember, and when she does she swallows at something thick. "Of course not. Richard wouldn't..." It trails off too soon, like the thought was so frustrated with itself, with her, that it decided to evaporate. Wouldn't what?

Cara doesn't need completion, though. Just laughs—another low growl, smirking this time. She lets her thumb to sweep over Kahlan's bicep before she removes her hand. The way her eyes sear in makes her bare hands look boring. "If it had been me, that scar would be the first thing I'd want to hear about."

Even if Kahlan knew how to react, there'd be no time for it—Cara turns towards the fire and buries the needle in the embers, careful, nimble, not bothering with her gloves.
