I literally don't have the fucking words but ill make some up I've been deliberately trying to learn as little as possible about this play bc I want to be surprised right all I knew was the names of the ppl attached to it and the fact that the writer larissa fasthorse is the first female native american playwright (that we know of) and it's like a [title of show] esque show about trying to do an accurate Thanksgiving Play right ok cool sounds like it should be interesting thought provoking funny and punk rock right cool cool cool obvs i booked my flight that day lmao but um.

Obviously no one is entitled to anything but it didn't sit right w me bc she is so personable and outgoing and she genuinely LOVES her fans like it's so obvious that she's not just placating people when she talks to them its bc she WANTS to so I just laughed at it tbh and bc Obviously if you're a theater person you know about stagedoor etiquette like pls bffr. But I still was like well maybe they're right yk theater can take a lot out of an actor and maybe she won't wanna chat or anything and I'm fine with that truly. But no. This woman. flower anon goes to hadestown and has a TIME

so there is no possible way for me to express my feelings and emotionsTM about Hadestown or my weekend in New York in an ask so I am sending them here. Just for context: I saw four shows in two days (my bank account is extremely pissed at me but it was worth it) and they were all special and phenomenal in their own ways. However, we do not have all the time in the world so I am just going to word vomit about Hadestown. 

So it is Sunday morning, I am on 48th and I am seeing The Lightening Thief at 1 but I made brownies for the cast and crew (as well as a separate batch for Eva because last time someone bought treats to the show she didn’t get one) and I was unsure if security would let me into the theatre with the food. So I “stagedoored” Hadestown as the cast and crew were coming in for the morning. I gave the first batch to Kay and she was incredibly sweet and lovely. I explained that the brownies were in fact not full of drugs (I do not have the money for that!!) which she laughed at and then we went on our merry ways. 

After Lightening Thief I had some time to kill before Hadestown so I went to dinner and when I walked back to the Walter Kerr they were stagedooring for the matinee show. I decided to wait and give Eva the batch that I made for her because I literally had nothing else to do. So Eva comes out and I’m at the very end so I am expecting her to come to me last (which is fine, I was going to see her again at the evening stagedoor!) but she STRUTTED down my way and I explained that these were for her and that I hoped she was surviving the two show day. She said that she had to give me a hug and of course I accepted. Then she complimented my top (which was leopard print) and exposed her neck tattoo and was like “they match!!” Eva was so lovely and then I left to let the people stagedooring enjoy their experience. 

Fast forward a little I am sitting in the Walter Kerr and it is starting to come over me that I am actually here and about to see this show. Then the light dims and Andre came out and opened the show. Saying “aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight” back in harmony with the audience was indescribable, just as the actors were centring themselves for the show, I was centring myself for an unforgettable experience. 

Now I am just going to transition into some notes about the show (i would do every song but we would be here a while, so I am just doing what impacted me the most/I recall): 

The first trombone note played and INSTANTLY my eyes were misty oops 

when Hermes is introducing everyone Orpheus was kind of fidgeting/extending his fingers in a very specific way and was a very cute and subtle way of expressing his kind of nervousness/anxiety/ticks whatever you want to refer to it as 

The la la las hit so different live like holy shit the way the sound radiates around the theatre is magical and unlike anything else. 

The first interaction of Orpheus and Eurydice had my heart soft and I was not ready in any shape or form for anything to happen to them other than love and happiness 

At the end of Road to Hell when Hermes sings “we’re going to sing it again” Hermes WENT OFF. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous and the whole cast is like jazz handing at him and he holds it for an ungodly length of time and it was a legendary opening. 

HEARING EVA LIVE WAS EVERYTHING i watched her with wide eyes and so much love in my heart like i didn’t realise how intense the sound would be in a live space. I dont know shit about how sound and mics work but man like it is so different live the whole show I had chills.

Come home with me and wedding song are so fucking tender and horny like god i love this couple so much i had a bad seat for watching Eurydice drop her coat shoulder when she tells orpheus if he wants to take her home he better werk but the teasing tone in her voice was iconic and his little breathy hitch got me like isahdfsdhflhdf

During living it up on top when Eurydice dances with the workers chorus she did the Leg KickTM and I felt blessed 

also during his toast Orpheus’ voice broke when he said “To the Patroness” and it was the cutest thing in the world i love my nervous son 

All I’ve ever known was the first song to make me cry cry, it is just so sweet and such a special depiction of love and really hit home for me. it says a lot about me that the tender and horny song is the one that broke me. When the leg thing happened I was unable to breathe for a moment 

the tender horniess continues during way down, and i specifically watched the kiddos because I love to suffer. They start on a stool and orpheus kisses her neck while she taps the beat of the song on his thigh and theyre just so in love my heart could not take it. They move then to the centre of the stage and spoon and you can see Orpheus’ feet tapping along to the music here too. 

Chant is so fucking sexy there is literally no other way to describe it, everything about the design and the way it is performed is so so so good like h o l y s h i t it is so good. However I hate Hades sunglasses and wish they were different because they just make him look like my racist uncle lol 

Wait for me gave me a panic attack because i was very worried about bby orpheus getting bonked on the head but also THE LIGHTING IS SO SEXY the lighting tony was so well deserved i’m glad the american theatre wing did like at least one (1) thing right. Also i was full on crying at this point. 

Why we build the wall…. powerful shit I watched persephone during this and her facial expressions tell such an intense story of love, hate, desperation, and drunkenness. 

flowers rekt me and left me for dead. it was such an emotional performance and i personally resonate with this song a lot (haha thats trauma baby) AND THEN THE TRANSITION TO TENDER LOVING COME HOME WITH ME stomped on my grave. also orpheus ran right by me and i was like GO GET HER YOU LANKY FUCK 

i usually don’t listen past flowers because self care and I was already an emotional mess so when if its true began i was full on weeping. I felt so bad for the people next to me, you physically see orpheus break down and it shattered me and then rebuild with the support of the worker and the hope become restored (but it isnt strong enough in the end (OUCH)) 

epic iii instrumental with the dance was just so full of young love hades and persephone just beam at eachother in this new wonderful way and once again, i was weeping because orpheus did it he la la laed the world back into tune and it is so tender and so full of love 

EVAS BELT IN WAIT FOR ME REPRISE GOT ME FEELING ALL KINDS OF CRAZY i was leaning so aggressively forward in my seat i want to remember that sound FOREVER 

doubt comes in was a really bad time. obviously i know the story but something about the show makes you hold on to all the hope in the world and I was literally sitting in my seat, my nails digging into the flesh of my palm thinking “cmon orpheus you know who you are you can do this hold on please hold on” AND THEYRE SO SNEAKY WITH THE LIGHTS IT GETS HOPEFUL AND THE SET COMES BACK TOGETHER AND THEN IT HAPPENS AND OH LORD i audibly gasped and the tears were STREAMING down my face and the face of the lady next to me who had no idea of the story rip to her man 

i literally cannot recall any of road to hell reprise visually because my eyes were so messed up with tears but hermes voice was almost like a blanket coming to wrap me up and hold me again after all that hurt and hold on to the hope that it might in fact turn out next time we sing it 

also i made an active choice to not listen to we raise our cups before the show and BOY HOWDY that was a choice because the moment it began the tears came once more and it was magical watching the audience (all standing, get that standing ovation) taking in the last little bit of magic that the show offers you and the feeling of hope and light that seeing a sunflower in all of its beauty brings. 

after the show i stagedoored and was lucky enough to meet and talk with Cherie the SM (she called the show too so I felt rlly lucky) and she wished me good luck in law school then i met John, Timothy, Jewelle, Anthony, Kimberly, and of course Reeve and Eva. I might have cried on the train home and yeah it was just this absolutely incredible and life changing moment, I feel so lucky that I was able to go it was worth it in every sense of the word. Hadestown went above and beyond and I will hold on to the memories forever.

this is like almost 4k and its mostly just rambling but i need to express how much i love sixcago

like at least half of this is just me being gay so i bolded some of the things that i found really interesting and isnt just me like, freaking out

so to start off: holy shit. the energy of the entire show was amazing, it was really funny and fun and the acting/dancing/singing was on point like i cant think of a single complaint on the part of any of them.

so to get into the actual show

when the curtain came up and the smoke started pouring out i actually felt my soul leave my body it was such a good moment

less than thirty seconds in brittney mack made eye contact with me and i swear to god my heart stopped and i honestly had trouble focusing on the rest of the song

i am not exaggerating that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth

shes............. literally so good im still shaking as i write this like three hours later

the third repetition of the rhyme where they all sound kinda pissed off? they nailed that

adrianna was so cute when she said “you wont try that again”

andrea holy shit. thats really a wrap on that

abby got that like, kinda head in the clouds thing that i feel like is janes Brand during this part

like catherine is usually pretty Serious, i think but it felt like adrianna knew she was playing a character who was Like That, if you will, and was kinda leaning into breaking the fourth wall a little

i can probably elaborate if that doesnt make sense

“not my thing” had the BIGGEST uwu energy of anything ive ever heard

it implies that anne had no other train of thought than the one she was on and thats very funny to me

i think it fits w andreas portrayal too

everyone was like, fake crying when anne fake walked down the aisle and it was really funny imo

and as soon as she got to the end anne like, turned, yk?

the entire audience gasped after that

andrea had actual like, panic on her face

then she led into “i guess he just really liked my head”

and there was a beat after that, where everyone laughed

it was long enough that everyone got the joke

like, this monologue came across (to me at least) as unquestionably a “woman who was abused trying to justify it to herself” kind of situation

“and that’s not because i was scared,” she said, wearing an absolutely terrified expression

this is where she started tearing up i think

okay i gotta take a moment here because

abby was fully crying before the song even started

like somewhere about halfway through her monologue she started tearing up

i was looking for it specifically

i wrote this before the last part so see above

so by the first fucking like of hos you could hear her voice breaking

holy shit ms meuller what the fuck

im not kidding who gave her the right

at the stagedoor she said that after this she was like, “well thats it for my makeup” when someone complimented her song

she is crying. the first chorus and she is actively crying. in the breaks between her lyrics you can hear her crying

abby went high on a couple of notes in here

she riffed on “truthfully” and it was, wow

she didnt go for the whistle tones which was, honestly? the most relatable thing in this entire show

but a couple of the other notes she went high on and they were so killer

there was a second or two of pause after the end where everyone just, absorbed things before the applause

i have some questions for abby about this actually because i dont know if its just because the monologue was different than im used to but

i just want to know if abby meant to have everything come off like That but god

the mental gymnastics jane is doing here are so intense

this performance genuinely changed how i listen to hos forever

i dont think i can ever peacefully listen to this song again

and in the background it really looked like seymour and cleves were having a normal conversation and i lost it like. they were just chattin

there were a couple moments of like, cleves and seymour interacting and it was interesting

for me the most compelling part of this howard was the fear

like yes there was the sadness/anger/etc like there was good emotion but

idk i might expand on this in a separate post because its a darker topic but yeah. holy shit that was emotional

not a single person clapped after the last line. they all waited until after “yeah, and then i was beheaded” before clapping

like the theater was dead silent. DEAD silent

it was like, so haunting because it was just courtney on stage at that point, with just the white spotlight on her, it was a Moment

im not sure i have the heart right now to get too deep into this

if it would be particularly interesting to anyone feel free to ask, im happy to get more into it but idk its just Emotional

so on each “we have a connection” it was uhhhh parr and aragon (i think) who each put a hand on like, her clavicle

and for the first two verses she grabbed one of the hands and was like, flirty? ig

it was about halfway through this second part that i realized cleves had her coat back. i dont know when that happened. if anyone else knows when exactly anna of cleves gets her coat back after it gets taken off in get down please tell me. i genuinely want to know

i told her i loved her line delivery (because uhhhhhh i do) and she said that she tries to get in that comedic timing when she has Those Lines and like yeah

she was seriously the nicest

the ladies in waiting came out as well and everyone cheered for them and lets be real they DESERVE it

brittney was also super sweet! i told her she had good energy (because uhhhhhh she does) and she was very nice about it!!!

in conclusion! this was such a great+special experience!!! all of the actors were incredible, it was so wonderful

I went to see The Book of Mormon for my second time last Saturday and decided to do a write up b/c other ppl had done it and it looks fun!

-When jesus started talking @neko-no-niji​ thought he was doing a jesus impression lol

-KJ walks down with the biggest smile on his face he was so good

-Codys ‘OOPS’ in hello

-In the ‘Hello’ ‘my name is..’ ‘Elder Cunningham!’ Cody looks at the other and tries to copy their moves

-Everyone looks so in awe of KJ at ‘Your’e like the smartest, best, most deserving elder..’ but honestly me too

-Everyone is so cute in Two by Two,, and the entire thing tbh

-Someone teach me to two by two dance? same 4 turn it off

-After two by two & before you and me (but mostly me) when Cody and Arnold are alone, Cody kinda throws his arms up in the air, jumps up and lands with his legs kinda apart? So hard to explain but it was so pure

-Cody sippin on a juicebox before they leave and his dads like….’ARNOLD,, ARNOLD’ that boy is so pure -- ‘I HAD MRS BROWN SING LIKE AN AFRICAN FOR YOU!’ -Hasa Diga, Mafala had such a deep voice it was rlly good (dont take that out of context)

-One of my fav parts is in Hasa Diga, when they walk back on the beat and fall on their butts

-During ‘This is my daugher she has a….’ Naba is proper slapping the floor and jammin then she stands up all pure -Turn it off is amazing,, they’re all such talented dancers honestly,, Stephen is such a good McKinley!!? -’WHAM, BAM, PUSH IT DOWN!!’

-When Stephen leads them to their rooms,, he holds KJs hand like right up to his lips he is kissing that boys hand okay -I am here for you..you can really see how close and comfortable KJ and cody are with each other they are friendship goals!!

-Cody constantly stroking Kjs face honestly same -Cody throwing the blanket over KJS face -At the end Cody gets off his bed and pushes it right next to KJs…..<3 <3 -Okay all American is one of my fav songs and it did not disappoint

-When Naba is like ‘whats the difference?’ KJ just turns to the audience with the biggest grin on his face - same grin during ‘I am there for you’ when Cunningham says  ‘It wouldnt be so incdiredible when you did it now’ and just before ‘I believe’ when theyre talking about converting But fucking naked and the others are like ‘That would take somehing incredible!’ -ANYWAY back to all American,,,Cody was constantly dancing, trying to shove the Book of Mormon in the Ugandans buckets or whatever they were holding - at points KJ signals to Cody like to stand next to him in the dance and like turns him around to guide him its cute -Salt Lake city was absolute perfection? Leanne hit every note perfectly

-When it builds up loads of stars light up in the background and its so beautiful

-At the end she grabs her typewriter to text all her friends <3 <3 -Back to the Mormon living quarters ...2 of them are playing games on the floor while another walks in playing paddle ball and they question why they haven’t got any baptisms come on guys

-McKinleys ‘O-M-GOSH’ -Cody is so chill explaining that they just saw someone get shot in the face :))) -Obv McKinely goes to kiss Price they wERE CLOSE -The scene of Price wanting to leave was actually so sad,, everyone was silent

-A good opportunity to shout out how amazing Arnold Cunningham actually is -Again, I am here for you reprise is SADD then Cody says ‘I don’t have any friends’ my heart BROKE -Leanne is so cute and hopeful in this scene, Naba believes in Arnold so much !! More Naba apprication! -Man Up is another fav of mine so i’m defiantly biased here...CODYS PERFORMANCE WAS EXTRAORDINARY OKAY

-Price walks on scrubbing his shirt trying to get rid of the blood and :))) - The next week I saw Bom (18th of November) When Cody is on that stand that moves forward he pulled a little kissy face and a peace sign IT WAS SO CUTEEEE -At the end note there is a single spotlight on Cody and it's beautiful

ACT 2! -Starts with more explanation of the actual book

-’I am Jesus’ gets me everyime

-Then goes to Cunningham and I don’t know why but it reminds me of the very start with Price walking forward, not sure if it's intentional?

-I really love making things up again, at the back his dad, hobbits, darth vader and a commander (?) from star trek appear like ‘nah stop’ -Cody pulled this really innocent face at the end i love him - Elder price was so happy to be in Orlando RIP his hopes and dreams

-KJ’s Price in SMHD is so dead inside...he is just ‘ :l ‘ throughout the whole song -The devils wear glitter okay and at stagedoor we talked to Ngozi how it never goes away it was iconic - -There is so much going on in this number

-After it all he's lying dead and Stephen goes to give him CPR and :))) - The week after I saw it again (18th)  when Cody says that all the africans want more lessons and all the elders are freaking out, Stevie just does a sassy click ??! -When KJ is all ‘thats amazing!’ Cody is so sassy and completely ignores his high five

-Its kinda sad honestly Harley was like’ DOnt be mean to him!! ‘ -KJs face lights up when they are like ‘that would take something incredible!’ I just want this boy to be happy okay -I believe is so amazing!! Really highlights KJs voice just damn -THEN really quick atmosphere change when Cody walks in with all the africans making up BS -When he said ‘You should always...stand up for yourselves.’ CHrist said!’ all the Ugandans were like ‘WOO yeah! Amen!’ Like they do in a gospel church but they didn’t the following week

-The villagers really love Arnold and this needs to be talked about more in fics okay

--Baptise me cured every sin i had….they're just so cute??? And the last note omg they look back at each other and aHHH

-I am Africa boi...Each time i've seen it when Harry Wright walks over to baptise his partner he literally goes ‘ :D’ and it's so pure

-the book in the butt scene is iconic..the doctor (gotswana) is played by Nicholas McLean and he is a great cast member!!!

-When Naba and Arnold have their little part, when they go to walk away they both look over their shoulder and Nabas eyes go up and down the audience and SHE LOOKS SO SASSY AND GORGEOUS!! -When Kevin walks back down there's shit in the bag with the book -Cody is really great in the coffee shop scene and so is KJ...when he says ‘when I baptised *insert naba name* the others just fell into place’ it got a huge response and you could see how close KJ and Cody were close to losing it and the fact that they held it together got a bigger clap

-When Price says ‘don’t touch me’ or whenever Cody touches his face and runs off and you can see that these two have a really great relationship

-Price goes to sit down but he can’t because of his sore bum lol

-American Moses okay ...when the music starts some of the elders are swaying side to side and bopping up and down

-Pls watch their faces when it starts to get bad though its so funny

-You can tell KJ loves the whole thing

-Just...so iconic

-When Jesus comes in with the huge dicks hes like humping the mission president from behind and sticking his dick in his face oml

-The Hasa Diga reprise is outstanding it should've been on the cast album (just like all the reprises tbh) and some people laugh but it's actually such a sad song

-But!! Cunningham fixes everything like the angel he is

-Its a really sweet moment when it all clicks with Price

-As McKinley is leaving he has this pink floral suitcase and its iconic

-Tomorrow is a latter day actually makes me cry, especially prices ‘I believe’ solo halfway through

-After the bows and all the cast all dance and they're all so happy and amazing i love this cast so much

-You can stagedoor here!! Please do it!! Give this cast the appreciation they deserve! They all give really good hugs okay

i'm curious; what do you think of andy mientus?

okay so im gonna share an embarrassing story with you. when i went to go see dwsa, i stagedoored because i had learned minimal asl and i wanted a picture with sandra mae frank (she didnt even come out that night but i fell in love w treshelle so it was okay). anyway, andy mientus came out. my mother, who hadnt recognized anyone else expect for marlee matlin and camryn manheim, made this excited noise next to me. 

“i know him!” my mother said. i whipped my head around, saw andy a few people down the line, and turned back. 

“thats andy mientus,” i said, mouth twisted in displeasure. he was a good hanschen, but i had came to this show not liking him and goddamn if i wasnt going to try to stick to that. “he was marius in les mis and he was in this show, smash.”

“yes!” my mother continued, “you have to take a picture with him”

i, who had been taking pictures with everyone, didnt understand why my mother wouldve assumed that i wouldnt take one, but i still didnt rly like andy and i wanted to be contrary so i hissed, “i dont want a picture with him.”

it was then that i turned away from my mother and saw that andy mientus was literally Right behind me. he was clearly in hearing range. he had clearly heard me. i wanted to sink directly into the ground.

“hi,” he said, when he came to me, in his smooth, quiet voice. he was shorter than me. he was wearing a hat and a coat and looked super Soft. he signed my playbill. “did you like the show?”

i, flustered and embarrassed, said “yes! it was so good, you were so good! will you take a picture with me?”

“sure!” andy mientus said, smiling softly, because hes a Kind man and he was going to take a photo with me even though he 100% heard me talking shit.

so um. basically i think andy mientus is a Good Guy and a great actor. he comes off as a dick on social media sometimes, but irl hes so Small and soft spoken and tbh he was BEYOND fantastic as dwsas hanschen (even tho he does that rough thing w this voice thats apprntly bad for u). i used to hate him but Now i stan the hell out of him.
