#DOES TENEL KA KNOW THINGS ABOUT ME NOW THAT SHE CAN USE AGAINST ME

    A laugh bursts forth from her lips, airy and loud and desperately needed–the statement would seem absurd coming from anyone other than Jacen. She admires her son’s way with animals, even if they’re more often than not left crawling about the house and occasionally into her shoes. He has a big heart whose affections anyone would be lucky to be the recipient of; a trait, she hopes, that will serve him well in the future.

    “What about that redhead in your class? Tenel Ka? I thought you liked her.”

  Taking a rushed step forward, Jacen gently grabbed his mother’s wrist, whipping his head around to search for bystanders before leaning in towards her.

  “Mom.”

  The motion served more than one purpose. He wanted to make sure no one had heard what she asked, but he also wanted to hide the flush that had crept over his cheeks. The reaction was something he had tried ( so damn hard ) to quell, but the mere mention of the stoic redhead sent him into what he hoped would pass for an answer.

  “Yeah, I mean, I like her. I mean, I don’t like like her but I...” He paused, his free hand waving frantically around in the air between them. Lying had never been easy for Jacen to pull off, no matter how hard Jaina and Anakin ( and indirectly, Han Solo ) attempted to assist him with the skill. “Like, uh... like. I like her as a friend. She’s my friend too, I guess, you’re right, cause I like -- She’s just. Yeah.”

  With a quick shake of his head, he stopped and pressed his lips shut, thinning them and staring to his mother. Maybe he pulled that lie off? ( He knows he didn’t. )
