White House street renamed "Black Lives Matter Plaza"
Murial Bowser, the Mayor of DC, has renamed the stretch of 16th St NW in front of the White House "Black Lives Matter Plaza" (which abbreviates to "Black Lives Matter Plz") (!).
https://twitter.com/guycecil/status/1268927143091765249
Mayor Bowser also ordered a giant BLACK LIVES MATTER mural painted down the center of 16th St on the approach to the White House.
xhttps://twitter.com/guycecil/status/1268927143091765249
However, @DMVBlackLives, a DC chapter of Black Lives Matter, has decried Bowser's actions as window-dressing, sharing a video enumerating ways in which Bowser's administration has failed Black people in DC.
https://twitter.com/DMVBlackLives/status/1268951468041789440
The video lays out the case for DC's Metro PD being riddled with violent white supremacists who operate with impunity, harassing, hurting, and murdering Black people, while the Mayor looks on.

THIS HAS BEEN DEBUNKED. Check the Black Lives Matter DC twitter @DMVBlackLives for info about what’s happening re: protests here in DC
I’ve barely seen anything on tumblr about the blackout in Washington DC
There’s been radio silence from the city since 1am local time, tweets about it are being deleting and suppressed
[edit to add: there’s now reports coming out that the blackout was fake, I can’t confirm either way, be vigilant]

TOGETHER
If you’re a parent with slick and sly children, you probably understand why low-income communities and communities of color are so outraged with the U.S government’s response to recent events. With this analogy, I represent the U.S. government and my mom best represents the BLM movement.
My mother has asked me to clean the kitchen (BLM has asked government officials to put an end to systematic oppression through federal policy such as defunding the police and instead allocating these funds to resources that better serve low income and communities of color)
To stop my mothers “nagging” I dump the trash and check the mail (local District Attorney charges four cops for a murder caught on camera and government officials allocate funds to paint a street in D.C. with the phrase “BLACK LIVES MATTER” )
30 minutes later (the next time an innocent man of color is murdered in broad daylight on camera by the hands of law officials) My mother calls to my attention that the kitchen is STILL not clean (BLM makes headlines AGAIN with protest)
She applauds me for dumping the trash and says “finish cleaning the kitchen! I still see a sink full of dishes, crumbs on the floor and a mess on the counter.” (Systematic oppression and racism still plagues low-income communities and communities of color) instead of meeting my mother's demands with action, I point out, “hey, I checked the mail though” (painted BLM on a D.C. street)
She yells back “THANK YOU, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I ASKED YOU TO DO” (https://twitter.com/DMVBlackLives/status/1268903712581464066?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1268903712581464066&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcnews.com%2Fpolitics%2Fpolitics-news%2Fd-c-mayor-bowser-has-black-lives-matter-painted-street-n1225746)
At this point, I (U.S. government) can either complete my mother’s (BLM) request and clean the entire kitchen (undo the legacy of second-class citizenship suffered by African-Americans since the end of legalized slavery 151 years ago) or continue to disregard my mother's wishes by completing tasks that are simple and convenient for me.
I never took my mom as a joke and sincerely hope the U.S. government doesn’t take The Movement for Black Lives Policy Agenda as one either.
I sincerely pray for peace in the U.S.
But, for those who understand the humor of having a mother with patience and witty comebacks, please tell me y’all remember hearing this.
“I’ve already asked you twice, next time it’s with the belt”
I strongly disagree with violent protest; HOWEVER French poet, Victor Hugo, and Dr. King, a strong believer in peaceful protest, said it best “If a soul is left in the darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who sins, but he who causes the darkness.”
Standing alongside allies in both passive and active forms of protest this week has given me so much hope for a better tomorrow. The message is loud and clear, it's no longer about JUST race, but uplifting the oppressed.
If you understand the significance of 1619, the hypocrisy of the U.S. Constitution, Abraham Lincoln’s August 14, 1862 meeting with James Mitchel or even why the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre was left out of your AP U.S. history books, you likely understand why the black community will no longer tolerate oppression, racism, militarism, or corporatism.
“Nothing is more important than stopping fascism, because fascism is gonna stop us all.”
― Fred Hampton (Black Panther and founder of the Multi cultural movement known as The Rainbow Coalition)
(If you’re living in AZ, one of the worst states for public education, ranked 49 out of the 50 states, and haven’t stood up for the BLM movement PLEASE UNFRIEND ME. Your ignorance is a prime example of what happens when state officials allocate more funds to “protecting its border” and law enforcement rather than education.)

This is a performative distraction from real policy changes. Bowser has consistently been on the wrong side of BLMDC history. This is to appease white liberals while ignoring our demands. Black Lives Matter means defund the police. @emilymbadger say it with us https://t.co/w0ekwSG1ip
