Baul most likely tried tracking down Sparda during those 2000 years in order to challenge him to duel. And Modeus quietly followed behind so his brother doesn't do anything foolish. And to see his former mentor.

Neither brother had any ambition in Underworld and seemed comfortable in Human world so it makes sense they decided to follow Sparda's footsteps after some decades or centuries.

Baul had his ass kicked every time but Sparda stuck along to make sure he's alright. Modeus even helped Sparda in a couple of his adventures and maybe Baul begrudgingly tagged along because can't his old master die too soon, huh?

And they both knew it deep down. That Sparda is slowly dying and fading away. Each time he sealed off another gate, fought another demon, a piece of him was dying with them.

But Baul still lost every time. At some point, maybe he just wanted to stop Sparda. And Modeus could only watch on as his mentor suffered and faded. He respected Sparda's wish and autonomy too much to intervene. Till one day he was gone entirely, leaving Baul bereft and confused (till he found Dante, the image of his master) while Modeus had accepted it.

Headcanon that Modeus, Baul, Dante, Nina, Lady, and Trish all take Patty trick-or-treating, possibly while the lads are just walking around in DT or partial DT as a "costume". Because Pattycake deserves All The Candy, and also this way they can all keep her safe on Halloween night. And more people means more time trick-or-treating! (And this way the adults can work in shifts, so that way someone is always trick-or-treating with Patty while the other adults take a break. Patty might be young and energetic, but all that walking is hard on your feet. At least, if you're human. Hell, maybe even if you're a demon, Idk.) And more people to carry more candy!

Patty ends the night with like, 4 full trick-or-treat bags of candy, its great. She's so happy! She shares it all with the other kids at the orphanage, and with the adults, too. Its so cute! 💖

Modeus and Trish probably mapped out the best routes to get the most candy; probably by doing some scouting before trick or treating.

Having the Son of Sparda, two devil hunters and two powerful demon lords walking around with Patty and Nina would probably effectively keep the demons at bay during the night. Modeus, Lady or Dante would probably give Patty a small dagger that is disguised as a prop just in case.

I imagine Nina probably being nervous walking around at night, especially if demons are more likely on the prowl on Halloween but with the dmc crew (+Baul and Modeus) walking beside her and Patty, she feels a lot safer.

I do like the ideas of Dante, Baul and Modeus having an excuse to be in their demon forms for a night (or partial DT in dante's case). I hc that Halloween is Baul's favorite holiday just for that reason alone. Plus, when it's his turn, Baul already looks so intimidating (no matter the form) that even those bullies that try to take other kids' candy keep clear of Patty and them.

Sooooooooooooooo from what we know and can clearly see that Modeus and Baul are meant to be parallels of Dante and Vergil (and this is my mind refusing to let this idea go). This begs the question: What if Nero had a parallel?

Well, I am going to introduce to yall,

Orobas the Dreaded Equestrian.

Orobas is older than Baul and Modeus by 120 years but we don't know how old the twins are exactly so this would give yall an idea how older Orobas is than his brothers. Colorwise, Orobas has a grey color scheme as a mix between his brother's color schemes similar to Nero wearing both red and blue in reference to Dante and Vergil. He also has sharp teeth.

Goetia is a unicorn-like horse familiar with a shadowy mane and tail and a horn that glows with a purple energy. They also have several spikes and claws as will as grey markings that tend to shift around their body.

Rewatched Mission 10 of the Devil May Cry anime.

Personal opinion: I don't think Modeus really believes Sparda is still alive. I think he was just saying that for Baul's sake, to try and comfort his brother, let Baul keep his reason for living a little bit longer. And as a way to get Baul to call off on his challenge to Dante- because if Sparda is still alive, then Baul can just go fight him, rather than fighting Dante. Which would just result in Baul waiting for Sparda to come back, which is probably never going to happen, but Modeus probably figured that was better than his brother being dead.

The reason Sparda doesn't have a grave is because he asked Eva to destroy his body. We've seen how fanatics and lunatics abused his legacy, his swords and even the diluted blood that runs in his descendants' veins. Sparda must have seen such people in his 2000+ years.

So Sparda asked to be burnt and his ashes scattered so no one could desecrate his corpse.

(Which was a good call because we know one person tried to graverob him at least if there was a grave)

Had a headcanon I wanted to share. Technically this is for a "Modeus and Baul both live and are friends (Modeus) or rivals (Baul) with Dante" AU, but anyway.

-Modeus and Baul both let Patty style their hair. Modeus does it first, because Patty asks (Patty: "You just have so much hair! It's so long and pretty!"), and Baul follows his brother's example. They're both fond of Patty (Baul, grinning: "She's all frills and vinegar."), Baul is just more awkward about it because he's not used to being around kids. Its like having a tiny kitten follow him around, to him. Patty's something small and fragile and also a person and he doesn't really know how to act around human children. He tries to be nice to her, tho, in his own hesitant, fumbling way. Modeus is better with kids.

Anyway, Patty does their hair. Maybe Patty even manages to rope Dante into it, too. There's a lot of frilly ribbons and braids and probably at least one pair of pigtails. I think Modeus could probably teach Patty some other ways to braid long hair, too, since he has so much practice with his own hair.

Side note: Baul is okay, though the cut from Rebellion was deep and was causing him to heal slowly. It is going to leave a scar which is why he has bandages. Modeus spent all night by his bro's side and ended up falling asleep. Tbh, this is the best sleep he's ever gotten. I remember a post saying demons sleep better in groups and it applies here.

Has anybody done a comparison of how Dante, Nero, and Vergil talk in the original Japanese? Like, is Vergil more polite, while Dante and Nero are more informal/rude? I just wanna see how things translate over.

(Would also love if someone did this for Modeus and Baul from the Devil May Cry animated series, but that's more niche, so I don't expect much results.)

Looking through some Japanese and English cutscenes for DMC 5, Nico sounds quite different, Nero sounds decently similar I think? Not the exact same obviously, but they have the same vibe.

V sound INCREDIBLY different in each dubs.

Lady sounds quite different.

See what I said for Nero for Dante

Griffon sounds quite different.

Eva's voice is fairly different.

Trish sounds fairly different. (I don't know if I'm imagining it but when talking to V in the Japanese dub she sounds less calm and more emotional)

Urizen doesn't sounds too different, I think?

Vergil's voice sounds pretty different.

Then looking at the anime for Modeus and Baul:

Idea for Modeus' skill set if he'd lived to DMC5:

-Healing. We see demons heal one another in DMC5, and that demon guy Brad from the DMC anime could do it, so why not Modeus? If its just magic, he could probably learn it, right? Its probably more of a "lower class"/subservient demon skill, but still, Modeus could probably learn it. And Lord knows it could be useful.

-Shield/barrier magic. For himself and other people. Again, just support stuff.

-Ammo mods, for single people or the whole group. I keep thinking like Warp Ammo from Mass Effect 3. Just something to give his teammates a boost, if he really doesn't want to fight himself.

-Also kinda wanna give him Nevan, just because a) I doubt she'd be able to tempt him to anything*, and b) it'd be nice for him to have something to make up for his lack of wings.

[*= If Nevan even does that anymore. I doubt it? But it'd be nice to see her growing to like humanity as more than food, thanks to exposure to Dante and Trish. Maybe she, Modeus, and Trish could bond over being reformed demons? They get along because they both like human art and music- at least I assume so, based on Modeus' general vibe and Nevan's sunken opera house- and eat strawberry sundaes together. Its nice. 💜]

For Baul:

-Him and Credo (if he survived past DMC4) could make a good team. They'd need a lot of character development to get past their respective Issues(TM), but still, I think they could make a good team.

Thoughts of Modeus and Baul from the DMC anime?

To be honest, they didn't leave much of an impression on me. The only thing about them I remembered was 'brothers, reason for living'. And I did enjoy the callback to that in DMC5 with Urizen/"your reason".

Keep in mind, the anime was my first exposure to Devil May Cry, so I knew absolutely no lore or backstory. Therefore, the story of Modeus and Baul didn't really have much significance to me. After I got into the games and knew the most important parts of the lore, I went back to the anime. And wow, Vergil haunts the fuck out of this episode. His lack of presence can be felt throughout the entire show, honestly, so it was interesting to pick that up when I watched it a second time! Because the first time I didn't even know Dante had a brother! lol

I watched the episode just now to refresh my memory on it, and I really can enjoy the narrative parallels a lot better now. It'd be nice if they got more than one episode. There's a lot you could do with "close friends of the protagonists' dead father".

Modeus is Blorbo Material. Look at him with his long hair, sharp eyes, and ridiculous eyelashes. He's got a gentle demeanor and is great with kids! Wasted potential fr.

I'd like to see more about a devil that rejects the sword, as well.

Baul is less interesting to me tbh, but he could be a really complex and compelling character.

In the end, these twins are a lot like Credo: lots of wasted potential.
