Had a headcanon I wanted to share. Technically this is for a "Modeus and Baul both live and are friends (Modeus) or rivals (Baul) with Dante" AU, but anyway.

-Modeus and Baul both let Patty style their hair. Modeus does it first, because Patty asks (Patty: "You just have so much hair! It's so long and pretty!"), and Baul follows his brother's example. They're both fond of Patty (Baul, grinning: "She's all frills and vinegar."), Baul is just more awkward about it because he's not used to being around kids. Its like having a tiny kitten follow him around, to him. Patty's something small and fragile and also a person and he doesn't really know how to act around human children. He tries to be nice to her, tho, in his own hesitant, fumbling way. Modeus is better with kids.

Anyway, Patty does their hair. Maybe Patty even manages to rope Dante into it, too. There's a lot of frilly ribbons and braids and probably at least one pair of pigtails. I think Modeus could probably teach Patty some other ways to braid long hair, too, since he has so much practice with his own hair.

Side note: Baul is okay, though the cut from Rebellion was deep and was causing him to heal slowly. It is going to leave a scar which is why he has bandages. Modeus spent all night by his bro's side and ended up falling asleep. Tbh, this is the best sleep he's ever gotten. I remember a post saying demons sleep better in groups and it applies here.

Saw a theory from 2018 that Nero was Baul's son

Baul perpetually being a mother hen to any kids around him, especially Patty, and not really realizing it because demonic parents tend to be kinda... Not as nice as (good) human parents can be, shall we say.

Like, he takes Nero and Pattycake out deer hunting or something, and its chilly out, so he makes sure they're all bundled up and checks in to make sure they're warm enough. Brought hot drinks and warm food, too, for if/when they get hungry.

Note for later: Patty finds a deer antler, either from a deer they killed, or just on the ground while Baul was teaching them how to follow deer tracks, since deer shed their antlers (iirc) annually. She thinks it's pretty, so, with her permission, Baul takes it and makes it into an antler handled knife for her. Or maybe something else, Idk. Not sure if a knife would suit her- but Patty would keep it anyway, because its a gift from a friend.

This is definitely the weirdest headcanon I have but while Modeus and Baul are in their human disguises, aside from their pointed ears (and in my design, slitted pupils), you can tell that both twins aren't exactly human based on their teeth. Like for Baul, all of his teeth look pointed but not sharp (i don't know how else to describe it) and for Modeus, his is more human but he has longer canines (like a vampire).

I'll go first: The entire Sparda family (including Vergil's tulpas) are Mexican

Baul most likely tried tracking down Sparda during those 2000 years in order to challenge him to duel. And Modeus quietly followed behind so his brother doesn't do anything foolish. And to see his former mentor.

Neither brother had any ambition in Underworld and seemed comfortable in Human world so it makes sense they decided to follow Sparda's footsteps after some decades or centuries.

Baul had his ass kicked every time but Sparda stuck along to make sure he's alright. Modeus even helped Sparda in a couple of his adventures and maybe Baul begrudgingly tagged along because can't his old master die too soon, huh?

And they both knew it deep down. That Sparda is slowly dying and fading away. Each time he sealed off another gate, fought another demon, a piece of him was dying with them.

But Baul still lost every time. At some point, maybe he just wanted to stop Sparda. And Modeus could only watch on as his mentor suffered and faded. He respected Sparda's wish and autonomy too much to intervene. Till one day he was gone entirely, leaving Baul bereft and confused (till he found Dante, the image of his master) while Modeus had accepted it.

Thoughts of Modeus and Baul from the DMC anime?

To be honest, they didn't leave much of an impression on me. The only thing about them I remembered was 'brothers, reason for living'. And I did enjoy the callback to that in DMC5 with Urizen/"your reason".

Keep in mind, the anime was my first exposure to Devil May Cry, so I knew absolutely no lore or backstory. Therefore, the story of Modeus and Baul didn't really have much significance to me. After I got into the games and knew the most important parts of the lore, I went back to the anime. And wow, Vergil haunts the fuck out of this episode. His lack of presence can be felt throughout the entire show, honestly, so it was interesting to pick that up when I watched it a second time! Because the first time I didn't even know Dante had a brother! lol

I watched the episode just now to refresh my memory on it, and I really can enjoy the narrative parallels a lot better now. It'd be nice if they got more than one episode. There's a lot you could do with "close friends of the protagonists' dead father".

Modeus is Blorbo Material. Look at him with his long hair, sharp eyes, and ridiculous eyelashes. He's got a gentle demeanor and is great with kids! Wasted potential fr.

I'd like to see more about a devil that rejects the sword, as well.

Baul is less interesting to me tbh, but he could be a really complex and compelling character.

In the end, these twins are a lot like Credo: lots of wasted potential.

What do you think V and Vergil (post-DMC5) would think of Modeus and Baul? I know they're minor, anime only characters that didn't get to do much before they got killed off, but still, *grabby hands* there was such Potential there. (DMC2 levels of Potential, I think.)

It's been a while since I watched the anime but I think V/Vergil would be. Second hand embarrassed? A bit sad over their fates? Since Vergil now has the introspection to be like oh hey. Me and Dante were Like That once. Honestly it just amazes me how much the anime drew all these allusions to Dante and Vergil's relationship without even mentioning Vergil once

Been trying to imagine Modeus with short hair. I think the shortest he could ever stand would be like shoulder length. Any shorter than that and he just look like a giant fluff ball. His hair just sorta fluffs up and sticks out from his head like a lion's mane. (So does Baul's, if/when Baul lets his hair grow out longer than the length we see his human form's hair have. Baul's demon form's hair actually looks longer than his human form, which is kinda neat. More wavy, too. Very pretty!) It looks really cute! But he prefers it longer.

Baul hates long hair (more of Modeus' hair length) but will let Modeus braid the hair so it doesn't get in the way of his fighting.

Since you mentioned the possibility of Baul growing his hair out, Baul does grow his hair out in my canon. It might be hard to tell at all but he lets the hair that isn't defying gravity (Baul would probably pass as a final fantasy character tbh) grow out. The Baul drawing in the corner is how I imagined he'd look in DMC5. Unfortunately, this earns him another nickname from Dante; "Mullet Man."

Has anybody done a comparison of how Dante, Nero, and Vergil talk in the original Japanese? Like, is Vergil more polite, while Dante and Nero are more informal/rude? I just wanna see how things translate over.

(Would also love if someone did this for Modeus and Baul from the Devil May Cry animated series, but that's more niche, so I don't expect much results.)

Looking through some Japanese and English cutscenes for DMC 5, Nico sounds quite different, Nero sounds decently similar I think? Not the exact same obviously, but they have the same vibe.

V sound INCREDIBLY different in each dubs.

Lady sounds quite different.

See what I said for Nero for Dante

Griffon sounds quite different.

Eva's voice is fairly different.

Trish sounds fairly different. (I don't know if I'm imagining it but when talking to V in the Japanese dub she sounds less calm and more emotional)

Urizen doesn't sounds too different, I think?

Vergil's voice sounds pretty different.

Then looking at the anime for Modeus and Baul:

Idea for Modeus' skill set if he'd lived to DMC5:

-Healing. We see demons heal one another in DMC5, and that demon guy Brad from the DMC anime could do it, so why not Modeus? If its just magic, he could probably learn it, right? Its probably more of a "lower class"/subservient demon skill, but still, Modeus could probably learn it. And Lord knows it could be useful.

-Shield/barrier magic. For himself and other people. Again, just support stuff.

-Ammo mods, for single people or the whole group. I keep thinking like Warp Ammo from Mass Effect 3. Just something to give his teammates a boost, if he really doesn't want to fight himself.

-Also kinda wanna give him Nevan, just because a) I doubt she'd be able to tempt him to anything*, and b) it'd be nice for him to have something to make up for his lack of wings.

[*= If Nevan even does that anymore. I doubt it? But it'd be nice to see her growing to like humanity as more than food, thanks to exposure to Dante and Trish. Maybe she, Modeus, and Trish could bond over being reformed demons? They get along because they both like human art and music- at least I assume so, based on Modeus' general vibe and Nevan's sunken opera house- and eat strawberry sundaes together. Its nice. 💜]

For Baul:

-Him and Credo (if he survived past DMC4) could make a good team. They'd need a lot of character development to get past their respective Issues(TM), but still, I think they could make a good team.

I honestly took a look at this, and from looking at my headcanons of Modeus and Baul...

Ironically, I had Baul headcanoned as slow as he utilizes his strength more than speed when he fights and Modeus has trouble controlling his anger, especially if friends of his get insulted or are in danger.

For Modi, he is definitely scary when he gets angry :>
