Beautiful memories from my trip to Dubai. "Не имей 100 рублей, а имей 100 друзей". Даже и 100 друзей не надо иметь, а просто пару настоящих, проверенных годами и временем! Спасибо вам @dktraveller and @irinatraveller за такую шикарную поездку, за ваш тёплый приём и за вашу щедрость. Главное, в чем мы снова убедились, что настоящую дружбу нужно ценить и беречь. Надеюсь, что мы теперь будем чаще видеться. ❤️ #southafrica #capetownguide #travel #capetraveller #tour #travelblogger #capetown #capetownetc #instagood #capetownlife #instagram #food #instagram_sa #potd #instadaily #pickoftheday #instatravel #coffee #dubai #дружба #отдых #дубай #африка #путешествие #туризм #турывюар #еда #кофе #гидвюар (at Dubai, United Arab Emirates)

Kodreti
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today we went to a Medieval Castle built into a cave.
We're now staying in the wine region. Just had a lovely meal with locally produced ingredients: salad, courgette, soup, wine, fruits.
Kodreti a small village east of Štanjel next to the border with Italy. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Catherine and belongs to the Diocese of Koper.According to local tradition, a fight that led to bloodshed inside the church had desecrated the site. The current church was built in 1879 and extended in 1896, when the belfry was added.

Petravore
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just getting sorted for another day cycling in a Slovenian "karst gorge". Very beautiful with lots of little walks off the main route to see natural bridges, caves and springs. It rained a bit so the forest had a wonderful aroma, apparently there's a Slovenian name for it - Petravore.

The Borovnica Viaduct was completed in 1856 and spanned the Borovnica Valley along the route from Vienna to Trieste vie Ljubljana. During its construction and for some decades afterward it was the largest stone bridge in Europe. It was 561 meters (1,841 ft) long and 38 meters (125 ft) high. The structure was planned by Carl Ritter von Ghega and construction began in 1850, lasting until August 1856, when the first train crossed it. It was a two-story structure; the first story consisted of 22 arches, and the second story had 25 arches. It was supported by 24 columns built of dressed stone that stood on wooden pilings driven into the loamy marsh soil. The arches were built of brick. The construction required one million cubic feet of broken stone, five million bricks, and one million cubic feet of stone blocks.
The viaduct was in poor condition before the Second World War. Water had seeped into the viaduct for decades, weakening the bricks, and the oak pilings that supported it were beginning to rot, with the result that the entire structure was gradually settling. Trains crossing it had to slow down to 5 kilometers per hour (3.1 mph). At the beginning of the Second World War in Yugoslavia, the withdrawing Yugoslav Army blew up part of the bridge; Italian forces replaced the missing part of the viaduct with an iron structure. After the Italians withdrew, German forces built a bypass route past the viaduct because of the danger posed by increasingly frequent aerial attacks. After the last major Allied aerial attack in 1944, the partially destroyed viaduct was not repaired. The railroad was rerouted to the edge of the Borovnica Valley in 1947, which is where it also runs today. The remaining part of the viaduct was gradually dismantled by 1950. Today only a single column of the viaduct remains, standing in the middle of Borovnica.

Was it ever thus?
On the road somewhere in Romania, I happen upon this information board and Hunger Pillar commemorating the Transylvanian famine of 1814-17.
On closer inspection I realise that it doesn't make sense, or makes perfect sense depending on your point of view. Namely, if there was famine and the people were starving how come Count Ujfalvi Samuel had food in abundance to distribute in order to prevent people from leaving in search of food? How does that work? (I think we know, Ed).

Fast forward to the UK today where food banks outnumber McDonalds. I'm channelling Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same". Was it ever thus?

A strange realisation
The day starts with a strange realisation. After a good night’s sleep in a comfortable bed when it comes to getting on the bike I feel quite weary but as soon as I start moving forwards I wake up. It must be road fever or road stamina. Mosonmagyarovar is the last town of any size before the Austrian border so I stop here to fill up with cheap Hungarian petrol and avoid having to pay Austrian prices. Mosonmagyarovar is a nice town: clean, more quirky statues, park, interesting architecture, quiet, impressive sturdy buildings and good food at Magyaros Vendeglo Gasthaus.[1]

The University now occupies the Castle’s protective walls. I discover that the town has a population of 35k-ish and boasts 350 dentists. Dentistry is cheap by neighbouring Austrian standards and so market forces determine that dentists and patients gravitate to the town. Moson and Magyar were once separate towns and some rivalries still exist.
