Buying Guide: How to buy the best camera drone
Buying the best drone with a camera may sound easy, but it requires you to check several factors before finalizing the drone. We asked a lot of experts about the features that make a camera drone superior to others, and here’s what they told us. Check out these factors to select the best drone with an HD camera. Camera setup The first thing that you should check is the camera setup as you are buying a drone for photography and videography. A camera drone with the best megapixels isn’t always great, so you should make your choice wisely. Look what features are available with the camera and how much you can zoom with it. There are multiple drones in this like DJI Mavic 2 Zoom that offers 4X zoom and 2X optical zoom. Similarly, there are some other features associated with the camera like night vision, and face detection. Check out these features before going for a drone. The battery life of flight time Do you want to recharge the drone after every five minutes? Well, it’s pretty obvious that you don’t!  You need a drone that offers remarkable battery life so that you can fly it for more time. Every camera drone available in this list has a different battery life, so you have to choose one based on the factor. Living with a Dell Precision 5540 Mobile Workstation
Just when you think you’ve got a great mobile computing solution, something always comes along to upset the apple cart. In my case, it was mostly drones — more specifically, the 4K footage from my Mavic Pro drones. In addition to the added compute demands of rendering and encoding 4K video, consumer drone footage benefits mightily from substantial post-processing to reduce noise, correct artifacts, and perform color grading.
My two-year-old Dell XPS 15 9560 has been a great workhorse for photo and video editing but has been limited by its 4-core CPU and thermal issues (even after I hacked on it with various thermal fixes). Plus there is a whole new generation of GPUs since its 1050, for applications like Lightroom and Photoshop that take advantage of them. So I went shopping.
Shopping for a High-Powered Laptop
By default, I looked at the newest model XPS 15, the 7590, but early reviewers seemed to be having the same thermal issues as the earlier versions. I also looked closely at the HP and Lenovo mobile workstations,
Tumblr media
but the components I wanted — latest generation i9, Turing GPU, and 4K touch display, all in one 4-pound chassis — weren’t all available at the time. They are starting to be, and I look forward to working with some of them over time. But I needed something sooner, so I took a chance and purchased one of the first Dell Precision 5540 units.
The Precision 5540 is very similar to an XPS model, with a few workstation twists, like the option for a Quadro GPU and some thermal tweaks, along with being certified for a lot of creative and engineering software. Early units even said XPS on the back flap, although now they say Precision. Physically the Precision 5540 looks nearly identical to my 9560, and in fact while I’ve had both of them in use I’ve found myself being frustrated at a missing file only to realize I’m on the wrong laptop.
Dell also provides about the same extensive set of ports it has for several years. There is a USB-C port that is now Thunderbolt 3 compatible, HDMI, 2 traditional USB ports, a mic/headphone jack, and a welcome SD card reader. Hard-wired Ethernet is long gone, but Dell does ship a USB-C Ethernet dongle along with the machine. Video callers will be thrilled that Dell has squeezed the webcam into the tiny bezel above the screen, instead of having it next to the keyboard.
If you’re looking for a fresh design, the Precision 5540 isn’t it. It’s nearly identical on the outside to my 2-year-old XPS 15, other than the new webcam placement.
You can get the Precision 5540 with Windows 10 Home, Pro, or Workstation (if you choose the 6-core Xeon). Linux is also available. RAM ranges from 8GB to 64GB, and hard drives from 256GB to 1TB. If you want either the T1000 or T2000 GPU, you’ll probably also want the large battery instead of an extra drive bay. The only screen option advertised to support 100 percent of Adobe RGB is the 4K IGZO4 Touch version. Selecting it will also require the large battery and configuring 2 RAM modules. After Dell’s online discounts, the 5540 is priced similarly to a high-end XPS 15.
The Precision 5540 Is a Performance Beast for a 4-pound Laptop
By the numbers, the Precision 5540 is a large upgrade over my last-gen XPS. The 8-core i9-9980HK has a lower base clock than the 9560’s i7 (2.4GHz versus 2.8GHz) but it boosts to a maximum of 5GHz and doesn’t throttle nearly as much. Running Cinebench R20 (CPU rendering) the 9560 crashed to a low of .8GHz, helping reduce its score to just over 1000. The 5540 never went below 2.9 GHz which, along with its 8 cores, allowed it to score over 3200. That performance ratio was more than matched in Intel’s XTU benchmark, at 2800 versus 850.
Similarly, the Quadro T2000 is a big upgrade. 3DMark’s TimeSpy jumped from 1800 to 3200, for example. The results for FireStrike were also good, jumping from 5000 to 7400. Following along with a monitor on the CPU temperature and clock speed, a small amount of thermal throttling occurred, but the CPU was always able to perform above its base clock.
Dell’s Precision 5540 4K LED display has a gamut covering 100 percent of sRGB and Adobe RGB, along with 95 percent of DCI-P3.
However, this is still a lot of processing power and heat crammed into a small package, so it isn’t immune from throttling. A combination of heavy CPU and Nvidia GPU load will cause the system power limit to come down, which in turn can reduce clock rates down to their base clock.
What? No RTX?
Having just covered Nvidia’s big push to roll out its RTX capabilities to “Creatives,” I was well aware that even though the T2000 GPU in the Precision 5540 is a beast by mobile standards, it doesn’t have any of the dedicated RTX functionality. In the end, I decided I’m okay with that. It isn’t clear how much true RTX capability is in applications Nvidia touts, so I don’t know what the performance gain would be.
In particular, while I do a lot of rendering, encoding, and image processing, I don’t game on my laptop (much) or use it for ray tracing very often. Similarly, serious AI work will still be the province of my desktop machines or the cloud, which have beefier GPUs and more GPU memory. Plus, the mobile workstations with real RTX GPUs are even heavier and more expensive. If Nvidia is successful in establishing RTX
Tumblr media
as a permanent part of its architecture, I’m sure that will change over time.
“Kitbashing” to Save Some Bucks
A favorite term in our family comes from model railroading: Kitbashing to upgrade a pre-designed building model is one of our favorite activities. Doing your own computer upgrades can be just as rewarding, and even more profitable. Dell wanted an uplift of something like $700 to equip my machine with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. I found I could buy the equivalent or better components for about $250 (Crucial 2666 RAM and a top-rated Adata NVMe SSD) and install them myself.
I did find that the security settings in the BIOS had to be turned down a notch before it let me boot of my new drive — that I had cloned from the one that came with the Precision 5540. Then I used the excellent PC Mover utility from Laplink to get my apps, files, and settings across from my old machine. It’s not perfect, but having tried many tools that claim to do this over the years, it is the only one I’ve found that is actually worth using.
Using the Dell Precision 5540
Overall, the Precision 5540 is a joy to use. The screen is stunning and capable of being incredibly bright. Having the (optional) fingerprint reader in the power button makes returning to the machine simple and intuitive. And the machine is fast. It not only benchmarks fast, it feels fast and is responsive (which you’d certainly expect from all that power under the hood). You can order it with a spinning hard drive as the primary drive, but I find it hard to believe that would ever make sense.
Unfortunately, much like many other Windows computers, the Precision 5540 continues to struggle with sleep-related issues when running Windows 10. The first one I ran across was that the default “connected standby” or whatever the current term is for the default sleep mode is, would enable the machine to fire back up after I closed it and put it in my photo backpack. Forcing it to hibernate solved that problem, but it really shouldn’t be a problem at all in a state of the art high-end machine. The other issue I had with two different units is that after resuming from sleep the WiFi speed was crushed to less than 10% of what it had been before. Interestingly, I didn’t see this when the 5540 first shipped, but has been easily repeatable for the last couple weeks. Updating drivers (from either the Dell or Intel site) doesn’t seem to fix it, although turning WiFi off and on again does. I really hope Dell gets on top of this soon.
Conclusion
Overall, I’m satisfied with the Precision 5540. It performed perfectly on the road in Europe to process 360-degree panoramas and lots of 4K drone footage, and around the US on several different projects. While the 5540 pricing starts at $1,240, a fully-configured unit prices out at just over $3,000, so it isn’t for everyone. I’m pleased with my choice and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to those with similar needs and budgets, although both the Thinkpad X1 Extreme 2nd generation and the HP ZBook Studio G6 should be worthy competitors. I’m assuming that Dell can fix the annoying WiFi issue.
For Mac users, look for the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro by the end of 2019. I do wonder if its screen will actually be larger than the 15.6-inch current standard for high-end 15-inch machines, or if the 16-inch moniker is just marketing. It’ll be interesting to see what Apple provides for GPU options for it, as that is one area where they have tended to lag behind Windows competitors.

DJI Smart Controller for the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom
The DJI Smart Controller for the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom drones has been announced at CES. The Smart Controller features an ultra-bright display screen and optimized controls and allows users to fly the Mavic Pro 2 and Mavic Zoom without using a smartphone or tablet.
DJI Smart Controller
The DJI Smart Controller features a 5.5” screen built into the controller itself. It has been designed so that you no longer need to connect to a mobile device. This makes the whole process of getting your drone up in the air a lot quicker and easier. It can be paired with DJI’s newest drones including Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro which use DJI’s OcuSync 2.0 video transmission system. The DJI Smart Controller supports automatic switching between 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz, reducing the influence of environmental interference on drone operation and image quality. This also ensures reliable long-range transmission at distances of up to 8 km.
Users can take advantage of its compact, highly portable design that has been optimized for use in direct sunlight. The ultra-bright display has an output of 1000 cd/m2, twice the brightness of standard smartphones. The brightness can be manually and automatically adjusted. When Auto mode is enabled, the DJI Smart Controller will automatically adjust its brightness using a built-in light sensor, making it optimal for the human eye according to the surrounding environment.
The DJI Smart Controller comes with a built-in microphone and speaker for expanded options such as live streaming. It can also playback video through the HDMI port at 4K 60fps with H.264 and H.265.
A customizable Android dashboard supports DJI GO 4, DJI Pilot, along with various third-party apps such as editing programs. The DJI GO 4 app also touts several new features including SkyTalk, that allows pilots to live stream the drone’s camera feed to social channels including Facebook, Instagram, and WeChat.
Another new feature is DJI GO-Share which easily transfers imagery from the Controller to your mobile device. The DJI Smart Controller brings a new level of reliability when flying, with 2.5 hours of battery life and the ability to operate in adverse temperatures as cold as -4°Fahrenheit and as hot as 104°Fahrenheit.
What is interesting is that users can download third-party apps through the built-in browser or install APK files from a microSD card. (DJI will not be liable for any permission or safety issues resulting from the use of third-party apps. If an installed third-party app prevents you from enjoying optimal use of your controller, DJI suggests you remove the app or restore the controller to the original factory settings.)
Price and Availability
The new Smart Controller will be available for purchase beginning in early 2019 for the retail price of $649 USD. Combination packages of the Smart Controller with Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom will be available as well.
Is it worth the high asking price?
The Smart Controller looks to be a great idea, but to me, it seems extremely pricey given the fact it is going to cost almost half the price of a Mavic Pro 2 or Mavic 2 Zoom. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from Vermont Prepper. If you have information for Preppers that you would like to share and possibly win a $300 Amazon Gift Card to purchase your own prepping supplies, enter today.
The concept of preppers utilizing unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) for forward surveillance and other situations is not new.  Until recently, the technology has been unattainable except for those with deep pockets. In recent years a decent consumer UAV with desirable features would cost thousands of dollars to achieve what DJI has done for a fraction of the cost in designing the DJI Mavic Pro.  Out of the box, the Mavic Pro is extremely easy to fly, has collision avoidance technology, and a 4.3 mile range (the longest range offered by a DJI – even more than their most expensive UAV).   If you combine this aircraft with a $22.00 app by Litchi Software, it adds an ability to pre-program a flight plan with waypoints, while varying your altitude, speed, and camera orientation to focus on points of interest (POIs) along its route.  Additionally, if in the event that you lose signal, the Mavic can be programmed to hover in place or automatically “go home”, or to wherever the controller may be – if you happen to be on the move.  The bottom line is that this craft is not a toy and with proper training, it has some serious tactical applications.  I have detailed a series of flight testing below to show that the Mavic can successfully drop a small payload via parachute for very little cost.
//
Before I continue, I want to quickly get two things out-of-the-way.  First, I have no connection at all to DJI and receive zero in return from them for writing this article. Secondly, you may be asking yourself, why do I keep referring to these machines as UAVs?  The simple answer is that I believe the use of the word “drone” does not do a UAV justice.  A drone can be a form of AI (a robot), or some other ground based machine or gadget.  Back in the mid to late 80s, prior to the adoption of the term Unmanned Air Vehicle, the pioneers initially used the term “Remotely Piloted Vehicles”, or RPVs.  I will use both RPV and UAV interchangeably as I believe these terms better define the Mavic.  That said, I realize most people refer to them as drones as do I in other content that I produce.
Much like most advanced technology, the consumer use of UAVs was born from the pioneers in the US Government that began using them for surveillance and lethal applications in the late 1980s/early 1990s.  The technology was cutting edge at the time, but rudimentary by today’s standards.  Think of the difference between the first cell phones versus the smartphones of today.
Additionally, the concept of using UAVs to many in the Government was scary.  In the beginning, they were inherently unstable and a lost signal would result in a crash.  They could only be tested on military ranges or large swathes of private land, primarily with the sanction of generous landowners in the Southwest.  As an added obstacle, some in the Government lacked foresight into the program capabilities and wanted to cut off funding as they believed these vehicles could never be stable or reliable enough to use in tactical situations.  Thankfully, the ragtag team of pioneers persevered and were able to eventually produce one of the first stable

DJI Mavic Pro Fly More Combo: Foldable Propeller Quadcopter Drone Kit with Remote, 3 Batteries, 16GB MicroSD, Charging Hub, Car Charger, Power Bank Adapter, Shoulder Bag
UAVs of its kind known as the gas-powered EXDRONE (I never liked the name).  Launched from a rocket, or as I refer to it as a big bottle rocket, the EXDRONE had a rudimentary autopilot, with a fraction of the accuracy built into the Mavic Pro, that has a built-in GPS.  It also had a real-time video feed, mostly unheard of at the time.  Basically, a heading could be programmed into its system, but the EXDRONE required some old school flight planning including wind calculations.  With some bright communication experts on hand to fine tune the antennas, the RPV range was extended from about 20 miles to 50 miles, and teams along the route could be deployed along high points to keep line of sight for the real-time video feed and take control as necessary utilizing a regular Futaba controller, which was the prevalent RC aircraft controller at the time (and still now to a certain extent).  Each team would have its own portable base unit and use a 4×4 Sony video screen to navigate along the flight path.  As a note, prior to the autopilot, the teams would need to fly it manually from the start and practice handing it off by giving notification to the forward team that they were turning off their Futaba in “3, 2, 1”….  At the same time the forward team would turn their controller on when the countdown ended.  This “handoff” was the time when the RPV was at most risk.  Lost communication would result in a crash.  Again, the technology was rudimentary, but it was shown that forward surveillance could be achieved via UAV.
These pioneers had no idea that what they were doing would eventually provide a huge impact in keeping the world safe from terrorism.  Given the limited technology, support, and budget, it was hard for them to see the eventual development of RPVs such as the Predator and its use of hellfire missiles to take out terrorist targets.  In my view, we are still in the infancy of the UAV revolution.  The technology is advancing faster than ever and there are still many yet untapped uses for these vehicles.
Some preppers may still be hesitant on the utility of RPVs such as the Mavic Pro.  With a cost of $1000, it is not inexpensive, but given the possible uses in a SHTF scenario, it may be the best money you ever spent.  Let’s first take a brief look at some of the specific features of the Mavic and why I think it gives you the best bang for the buck.  I will follow with some tactical uses with a specific design I am testing to deploy a small payload.  I am sure some of the smarter readers can think of other uses and I would be happy to see them in the comments.
Features of Mavic Pro – base cost $1000
27 Minute Flight Time/4.3 Mile Range – The Mavic comes with one battery that gives a 27 minute flight time after a full charge.  This time is a little better than the average UAV.  The 4.3 mile range is one of the furthest ranges out there in the consumer market.  A reasonably priced special antenna boosting apparatus ($13.99/Amazon) can be used to boost the range of the transmitter, though given a 27 minute flight time limitation, flying out too far may drain out the battery on the return trip.   In contrast, the DJI Matrice 100 has a 40 minute flight time, but it is over triple the price of the Mavic.  Additionally, the range of the Matrice 100 is less than 3 miles.  If budget permits, it would be optimum to obtain a few extra batteries, which cost $89 each.  One benefit of using the Litchi software is that it will give an estimated flight plan time (assuming no wind) to prevent the battery from fully draining.
Lightweight, Foldable Arms and Props – The Mavic arms and props fold up nice and neatly to easily fit in a small backpack for deployment.  Alternatively, there are many hardshell cases available on Amazon if better protection for the RPV and its accessories are required.
Tumblr media
Software – The Mavic can be controlled using free DJI GO software or via Litchi.  With DJI GO, there is currently no autopilot capability except auto takeoff and land.  I enjoy the use of this software when just flying around the vicinity to have fun.  It is not, however, recommend it for mission style sorties.  For missions, the Litchi software is highly recommended.  As mentioned above, a flight plan can be programmed into the aircraft so that you can concentrate on the real-time video feed to gather intelligence.  As mentioned previously, altitude changes, POI camera focus, loitering, and speed changes are all standard Litchi features.  In my view, Litchi is superior to the DJI app in with the exception of not having the ability to “Go Live”, namely on Facebook or YouTube (DJI allows live broadcasts).  You can also store missions for future repeat use.  Lastly, the software provides real-time verbal telemetry feedback (altitude, distance, battery power, etc.), which comes in handy if you might be focusing your attention on a POI.  The Litchi learning curve is helped with tons of YouTube instructional videos.
Collision Avoidance – The Mavic, unlike many similarly priced competitor UAVs, has a collision avoidance system built-in.  Even if you tried to manually fly it into an obstacle, the Mavic avoidance system would first beep as a warning and then stop.
Insurance – It is highly recommended to purchase DJI insurance ($99.00) which even covers damage from crashing into water.  It can be used twice.
Limitations
No Thermal Camera Capability – At the time of this writing, I do not know of any plans by DJI to offer a version of their Zenmuse thermal camera on the Mavic Pro.  In my opinion, a thermal camera offering would put this RPV at the top of the heap for first responders and the military, giving them the ability to conduct night search and rescue operations.  While the thermal cameras are not inexpensive (6-12k) for an average consumer, it would be a lot cheaper than using helicopters with FLIRs, and the Mavic noise signature would be virtually undetectable from above.
Payload Limited (not really built for payload deployment) – The Mavic is really not built to carry a payload.  DJI has other UAVs for this purpose, but they are triple or quadruple the cost.
Battery Life is Average – With a 27 minute battery life between charges, any mission would be limited to a short-range, especially if you decide to embark on the payload experiment detailed below.
Tactical Applications for a Drone
Tactical Use Caveats – all uses assume a SHTF environment.  My scenarios also assume you have a DJI Mavic Pro, not some toy that hovers 100 feet in the air.  Additionally, keep in mind the FAA has an altitude limit of 400 feet above ground level (AGL), no fly zones, and it is illegal to fly at night:
Threat assessment for specific location(s) – The Mavic can provide valuable intel if you might be concerned of a specific location in your vicinity.  With a preprogrammed flight plan, the UAV can circle the area from a safe distance and orient itself towards the POI.  It can be programmed to remain there as long as the battery limit permits (approximately 27 minute flight time per charge).
Avoid/Monitor Civil Unrest – In a SHTF scenario, it is quite possible there would be civil disturbance as people run out of food, water, and medical supplies.  Prior to making supply runs, the Mavic can scout ahead to determine if there are pockets of unrest blocking your route.
Avoid Capture by Hostiles – Much like the civil unrest scenario, the Mavic might provide some help in trying to avoid captors.  In this scenario, you might have a further standoff or climb to a higher altitude to minimize UAV detection.  The Mavic is pretty quiet and cannot be heard and is hard to see at 400 feet AGL.  In a SHTF environment, if the altitude limits go out the window, it would allow for an even further standoff.
Zombie Horde Herding/Redirection – I actually have to give my 16 year son credit for this one.  Given zombie affinity for sound, if flown low enough, the Mavic RPV could redirect a zombie horde away from you.  In all seriousness, I am sure there are some readers that can think of real life diversionary tactics that might be applied utilizing the Mavic (I mean no offense to Zombies).  I can see some kind of small battery operated sound generator, maybe on a timer, being attached and used as a diversion prior to an offensive (or defensive) operation.
Scout for Water/Food Supplies/Vehicles – Food, water, and other supplies will become harder to find in a disaster scenario.  While large bodies of water might be easier to identify, the Mavic may be able to assist in finding some lesser known streams or tributaries.  Additionally, while drones cannot be used for hunting, all bets are off in a survival situation.  The Mavic can help to possibly locate wildlife and even herd them towards your location.
Disaster Surveillance (Inaccessible Area) – A survival situation can occur not only from nefarious individuals/governments, but also from natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes.  In August of 1992 I was at ground zero in S.W. Miami Florida in my house with my mother and brother when Category 5 Hurricane Andrew hit.  For anyone that was there, they would remember that it hit landfall at 4:30 AM and the worst of it lasted for about two hours.  It was a relatively small hurricane, but it left $23 billion in damage in its aftermath (As a memento, I framed the front page of the August 25th Miami Herald publication, titled “Destruction at Dawn”, where the picture taken was about a mile from my house).
Tumblr media
It was almost like a nuclear bomb hit, and it was this event that spurred me into a prepper mindset in my 20s.  Communities were reduced to rubble.  There were many dishonest people both within and from out-of-state who swooped in and took advantage of the less fortunate.  It was sickening to see blocks of ice being sold for $50.00, and $300.00 generators being sold for thousands.  The roads were not navigable due to flooding and debris.  I think back quite often as to how a Mavic Pro could have helped us avoid a lot of dead ends, obstacles, and gridlock in trying to get out of the city, which would not restore full power for 6 months.
Small Payload Drop – In certain scenarios, small amounts of food, medical supplies, or communications can be dropped from a Mavic.  By my best estimates, the Mavic has between a 1-2 lb. payload capability.  I am currently flight testing it for payload stability and experimenting with a payload drop mechanism that does not require the addition of any electronics.  If you use the idea below, I just ask that proper credit for the theory be given (a link to this article would be greatly appreciated).  I have not seen too many YouTube videos with Mavic payload experiments, so I will share my idea as I believe we all benefit if someone has success.  Here is a YouTube link to the maiden voyage where the Mavic drops a 1.5 lb. ham radio.  It is recommended you have a detailed plan and be sure to consult some flight testing reference material.  If you decide to experiment on your own, perform tests in small increments at low altitudes.  Keep good notes, develop a flight test checklist, and be aware of your area.  Most of all, expect that things will not goes as planned and both major and minor adjustments will be required:
  Eight Design Payload Deployment Criteria
Low cost, material readily available
Max 2 LB payload (actual payload weight will be determined during flight testing)
Use of parachute to drop from high altitudes, protecting the payload
No servos or other added electronics
Aircraft stability
Avoid prop wash
Simple to Fabricate
Reusable
Theory – Before you crack up laughing at some of the materials, keep in mind that I have a method to my madness and an Aerospace Engineering degree with some UAV flight testing experience.  Before the current technological revolution in UAVs, in the late 80’s and early 90’s, the pioneers activated certain features during flight by extreme altitude drop (free fall).  The solution offered below utilizes this same premise, mixing old theory with the new technology demonstrated with the DJI Mavic Pro.  All of the items were purchased on EBay for less than $20.00.  Keep in mind I have seen payload release systems that range from $100-$1000, all of which are servo actuated.  These are great, but I do not know of any application that uses a payload mechanism without having to add some kind of electronic actuation.
Tumblr media
Design – A Tupperware container will be attached to the four UAV arms via fishing line and zip ties.  Eye hooks will be fastened to the four corners of the container, hung from the arms via four pieces of fishing line, each cut to 2 feet.  The end result would be that the container with payload will fly approximately 2 feet below the UAV to avoid prop wash.  Four lines were used for flight stability purposes.  The payload will be attached to a parachute via zip ties and placed in the container.
A trap door will be fabricated at the bottom of the container with a release mechanism that uses gravity to release the payload.  You can buy a 36” flare parachute on eBay or fabricate a parachute from bedsheets (36” is the size needed to safely drop up to a 2 LB payload – there are templates online).  The payload will be dropped by using its own weight first by vertically rising at the fastest rate possible, then descending quickly to break the bond of the release mechanism.  The trap door “release will be fabricated from a black office clip, zip ties, and an electrical connector.  The trap door was made by cutting out three sides of the bottom part of the container, leaving one short side intact.
Tumblr media
The reason for leaving one side intact is that it will act as a “hinge” to allow the payload to fall through.  I also put duct tape around the edges of the cuts so the parachute would not get snagged.  The free side of the trap door will be attached to the side of the container utilizing the zip ties, the electrical connector, and office clip.
Tumblr media
The idea is that the weight of the payload, combined with a sudden upward or downward movement, will cause the electrical connector to release from the office clip, allowing the payload to deploy through the trapdoor at the bottom of the container.  The payload I used is a Baofeng BF-F8HP ham radio.   I attached it with the antenna via zip ties to the chute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo 6 shows the whole contraption attached to the UAV. A radio was chosen as a payload to illustrate a real live first responder scenario, where communications might be desired with individuals in an area rendered inaccessible due to a natural disaster.
Challenges/Risks
The payload may be too heavy for the container and deploy before desired
Wind may cause the payload to prematurely deploy
The fishing line could break and get tangled into the props, causing catastrophic failure
Sudden RPV turns or altitude change can prematurely deploy the parachute
The setup may cause unstable flight
Flight time most likely shortened
Undue strain on electrical system
The key to success is to find the optimum payload weight so that the UAV can fly stable without premature deployment.
Tumblr media
If it is too heavy, the payload will be deployed before it is desired since the mechanism works via gravity.  If too light, it would not deploy at all.  Once the optimum weight is found, quarters can be added or removed to balance it out depending on the payload.
As you can see, though the Mavic cannot carry huge payloads like some of its older brothers and sisters in the DJI line up, I believe you get the most bang for the buck if you want to utilize it in a SHTF scenario or even as a First Responder.  With a little bit of ingenuity, I am sure others can come up with a fancier/prettier payload release for the system.

2019’s best camera gear
The cameras, lenses, and accessories that impressed us this past year. (Pop Photo Staff/)
In 2019 we saw nearly every camera company bet on mirrorless cameras, but there were plenty of other camera tech advancements that wowed us over the past twelve months. Read on to learn more about the products that blew us away this year.
P30 Pro by Huawei
A vertically mounted zoom lens lets the P30 pro reach beyond a typical Smartphone camera. (Huawei/)
Smartphone cameras aren’t very good at zooming. They typically switch to a whole different camera module with a longer lens (and smaller sensor) or they use digital “zoom,” which typically offers even worse image quality than simply cropping after the fact. The P30 Pro, however, has a 10x optical zoom lens built in. No, the phone isn’t massively thick. Instead, the company mounted the zoom lens vertically inside the smartphone and employs a mirror to redirect its viewing angle like you’d expect from a periscope. Combined with some rather impressive digital zooming tech (it’s still not perfect), you can mimic a 50x zoom lens and capture surprisingly usable images.
Apple’s Deep Fusion
Apple’s multi-shot system works behind the scenes to pull every detail out of your iPhone 11 shots. (Apple/)
In recent years, smartphone photography has shifted its priorities from hardware to the software and processing power that pumps out finished images. Apple’s Deep Fusion tech captures a burst of photos from before you even push the shutter button. It’s a mixture of short, regular, and a long exposure image, all of which contribute specific image attributes to every shot. The short exposure offers sharp edges, while the long exposure provides extra light. The final result is an impressively sharp image that excels at drawing out fine details like leaves in a landscape or texture in a delicate plate of food.
Fujifilm X-Pro3
A hidden LDC screen on the X-Pro3 gives an analog feeling to this brand new camera. (Fujifilm/)
The Fujifilm X-Pro3 has the technical guts of an X-T3, stuffed into a body that simulates the experience of shooting with a film camera. Unlike most digital cameras, the X-Pro3 has a hidden LCD screen, making it difficult for photographers to obsessively chimp over the shots on the screen. To frame on the camera, shooters must peer through an optical viewfinder, which has a field of view larger than the edges of the image—a great tool for street photographers to spy subjects before they pass through the frame. The design forces photographers to slow down and think before they shoot—skills that are crucial for capturing those decisive moments.
Osmo Pocket by DJI
A two-in-one pocket sized solution for capturing stabilized footage quickly. (DJI/)
DJI’s Osmo Pocket is an all-in-one rig with a mechanically stabilized 4K camera that is about the size of a candy bar. The camera—and the stabilizing gimbal on which it sits—is similar to what you’d find in one of the company’s drones. The Osmo Pocket can shoot 60 frames per second and comes with impressive shooting modes like time-lapse video. The two-in-one product is a pocket-sized solution for creating quality footage quickly.
Photo Mechanic 6
A powerful ingest tool for photojournalists, event photographers, and sports shooters. (Camera Bits/)
Photo Mechanic may not be the sexiest photo program, but for photographers that have to ingest a large amount of files quickly, it’s one of the most crucial. The last major upgrade to the media browser came in 2012, and a lot has changed in the camera world since then. Photo Mechanic 6 has 64-bit compatibility (so it will work with the most recent MacOS), improved UI, gives users the option to select which images it imports from a memory card and is three times faster than Photo Mechanic 5. Because it isn’t catalogue based, it’s a much speedier way to ingest, view, rate and tag images than programs like Lightroom or Capture One. This is a must-have tool for photojournalists, event photographers, and sports shooters.
Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct
This $8,000 piece of glass is the fastest manual focus lens that Nikon has ever made. (Nikon/)
Nikon’s 58mm F0.95 Noct lens isn’t for everyone—in fact, it’s specially designed for night photographers who need to make the most of small amounts of light. The $8,000 piece of glass also happens to be one of the fastest manual focus lenses that the company has ever made. The lens is made up of 17 elements in 10 groups, including three aspherical elements. A new Arneo coating cuts down on light reaching the lens from vertical directions, while a Nano Crystal coating helps eliminate flare and ghosting. It’s massive at 4.4 lbs and feels like a monster when attached to the Z camera, but that 0.95 aperture makes for some insane bokeh.
Leica SL2
Leica’s second-generation full-frame mirrorless camera has a powerful CMOS sensor and ergonomic changes that make it a joy to shoot with. (Leica/)
The follow up to 2015’s Leica SL, the Leica SL2 is a powerful, full-frame mirrorless camera built around a 47-megapixel CMOS sensor with improved ergonomics and a simplified three-button layout to match what is found on the Leica Q and M series. The SL2 has a full-metal housing made of anodized aluminum and machined magnesium and an IP54 rating against moisture and dust, which gives it a rugged and substantial feeling. The UI in the camera has a less-is-more approach, making it an incredibly intuitive camera to shoot with. A suspended sensor inside the camera adjusts position to compensate for shake for 5-axis in-camera image stabilization—a great feature for shooting with manual focus M mount lenses.
Sony a7R IV
The fourth generation of Sony’s mirrorless full-frame camera has a 61 megapixel sensor and shoots at 10fps. The camera also has one of the best autofocus tracking systems in the industry. (Sony /)
The a7R IV is a beast of a camera. It’s built around a 61-megapixel sensor that can pump out uncompressed RAW files that are 124 MB each and Extra Fine JPEGs that are nearly 40MB per shot. It shoots at 10fps continuous bursts, has one of the best autofocus tracking systems in the industry. It shoots 4K video, has 547 AF points, and offers 15 stops of dynamic range. In the high-end mirrorless full-frame category, this camera really goes above and beyond. The camera body also got some subtle ergonomic tweaks that make it a lot more comfortable and fun to shoot with.
Canon RF 85mm F1.2L IS USM
This powerhouse of a lens features 13 elements in 9 groups and is the first RF to utilize Canon’s BR optics, now if only there was a pro-level mirrorless body to attach it to. (Canon/)
Although we’re still waiting for Canon to release a mirrorless camera body that makes sense to use with this spectacular lens, the images that this fast 85mm prime can produce are stunning. The lens was the fifth available for Canon’s mirrorless camera system, but the very first RF lens to utilize BR optics, which help cut down on chromatic aberration. The lens includes 13 elements in 9 groups, including an aspherical element, an Ultra-low Dispersion element and the previously mentioned BR optics. It has a 9-blade circular aperture, a fluorine coating to make it dust and weather resistant, and a customizable control ring that can be used to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO.
Lensbaby Omni Creative Filter System
Lensbaby keeps it simple with this fantastic creative accessory. (Lensbaby/)
Sometimes a good camera product is all about keeping things simple. While Lensbaby’s Omni Creative Filter System may not be the most technical on this list, it’s simple design and the creative possibilities of shooting with it won us over this year. The clever collection of filter rings and magnets create a hands-free way for photographers to shoot through crystals and textured gels to create in-camera effects. Photographers simply screw the filter ring to the front of their lens and then attach the various crystal wands through small magnets.
Panasonic DC-S1R
Panasonic dives into the full-frame mirrorless market with three cameras. (Panasonic/)
Panasonic introduced three full-frame mirrorless cameras this year, a big jump, considering that up until 2019 Panasonic had been using a Micro Four-Thirds sensor. The DC-S1R has a 47-megapixel sensor, in-body shake reduction, a contrast-detect AF system, an ultra-high-res 5.76M-dot EVF, and an L-mount that supports Leica SL lenses. A mode called HLG Photo Mode saves high dynamic range images as HLG files so photographers can display them on HLG-compliant 4K televisions—the first camera with the capability. Another new photo setting called High-Resolution mode uses the sensor-shift image stabilizer to shoot eight consecutive images and then synthesize them into a single image with extremely fine detail.

Ricoh has a well-earned good reputation when it comes to building smart, technically excellent photographic equipment – including the almost legendary Ricoh GR series of pocketable APS-C cameras, which are a favorite among street photographers everywhere. Earlier this year, the company released the Ricoh Theta Z1, which builds on its success with its pioneering Theta line of 360-degree cameras and delivers a step-up in terms of image quality and build that will feel at home in the hands of enthusiast and pro photographers.
The Theta Z1 is what happens when you push the limits of what’s possible in a portable form factor 360 camera, both in terms of build materials and what’s going on on the inside. Like its more affordable, older sibling the Theta V, it shoots both stills and video in 360 degrees – but unlike the V, it does so using two 1-inch sensors – unprecedented for a 360 camera in this category. Sony’s celebrated RX100 series was pushing boundaries with its own 1-inch sensor in a traditional compact camera, and the Ricoh is similarly expanding the boundaries of 360 photography by including not just one, but two such sensors in its Z1. That translates to unmatched image quality for 360 photographers – provided you’re willing to pay a premium price to get it.
Design and build
The Ricoh Theta Z1 feels a lot like previous iterations of the Theta line – it’s essentially a handle with two big lenses on top, which is a pretty optimal design overall for a device you’re mostly going to be using to hold up and take 360 photos and video. It’s a bit bulkier than previous generations, and heavier, too, but it’s still a very portable device despite the increased size.
With the bulkier build, you also get a magnesium outer case, which is textured and which feels fantastic when held. If you’ve ever held a pro DSLR or mirrorless camera, then the feel will be familiar, and that says a lot about Ricoh’s target audience with this $1,000 device. The magnesium alloy shell isn’t only for making it feel like it’s worth what it costs, however; you also get big durability benefits, which is important on a device that you’re probably going to want to use in remote locales and off the beaten path.
The build quality also feels incredibly solid, and the button layout is simple and easy to understand. There’s a single shutter button on the front of the camera, just above an OLED display that provided basic info about remaining space for images or video, battery life and connection status. A single LED indicates both mode and capture status information, and four buttons on the side control power on/off, Wifi and Bluetooth connections, photo and video mode switching and enabling basic functions like a shutter countdown timer.
Using the hardware buttons to control the Theta Z1 independent of your smartphone, where you can remotely control all aspects of the camera when connected via WiFi and using the app, is intuitive and easy, and probably the way you’ll use the Z1 more often than not when you’re actually out and about. There’s little to worry about when it comes to framing, for instance, because it captures a full 360 image, and since you can handle all of that after the fact with Ricoh’s editing tools prior to sharing.
On the bottom, there’s a USB-C port for charging and wired data transfer, and a 1/4″ standard tripod mount for attaching the Z1 to tripods or other accessories. This is useful, because if you use a small handle you’ll get a better overall image, since the Z1’s software automatically edits out the camera, and, to some extent, the thing that’s supporting it. There’s also a small lug for attaching a wrist strap, but what you won’t find is a flap or door for a micro SD card – the Theta Z1 relies entirely on built-in storage, and offers just under 20GB of usable storage.
Still images
Ricoh’s Theta Z1 has two 1-inch sensors on board, as mentioned, and those combine to provide an image resolution of 670×3360. The camera caputres two 180-degree fields of view from each lens, and automatically stitches them together in software to produce the final image. The result is the sharpest, most color-accurate still photos I’ve ever seen from a 360-degree camera, short of the kind of content shot by professionals on equipment costing at least 10x more.
The resulting images do incredibly well when viewed through VR headsets, for instance, or when you use Theta’s own 360 viewer for web in full-screen mode on high-resolution displays. They also make it possible to export flat images that still look sharp, which you can crop and edit in the Theta+ app. You can create some truly amazing images with interesting perspective that would be hard to get using a traditional camera.
Indoors in low light situations, the Ricoh Theta Z1 still performs pretty well, especially compared to its competitors, thanks to those big 1-inch sensors. Especially in well-lit indoor environments, like in the restaurant example below, details are sharp and crisp across the frame and colors come out great.
In settings where a lot of the frame is dark or unevenly lit, as in the example at the Robot Restaurant in Tokyo below, the results aren’t nearly as good when operating in full automatic mode. You can see that there is some blur in the parts of the scene with motion, and there’s more grain apparent in parts of the frame, too. Overall though, the audience is pretty well captured and the colors still look accurate and good despite the many different tones from different sources.
The Ricoh Theta Z1 still does its best work in bright outdoor settings, however – which is true for any camera, but especially for cameras with sensors smaller than full-frame or APS-C. It’s still definitely capable enough to capture images you can work with, and that provide a great way to revisit great events or memories in a more immersive way than standard 2D images can accomplish.
You can adjust settings including aperture to optimize your photo capture, including choosing between f/2.1, f/3.5 and f/5.6, with higher apertures offering higher resolution images. The built-in lens has been designed to reduce ghosting, purple fringe artifacts and flare, and it does an outstanding job at this. RAW capture allows you to edit DNG files using Lightroom, and it works amazingly well with Lightroom mobile for advanced tweaks right on the same device.
Video
The Ricoh Theta Z1 does video, too – though the specs for the video it produces are essentially unchanged from the Theta V on paper. It can capture 4K video at 30 fps/56 mbps or 2K video at 30fps/16mbps, and live stream in both 4K and 2K. There’s a four-channel built in microphone for immersive audio recording, and it can record as much as 40 minutes of 4K or 130 minutes of 2K footage, though each individual recording session is capped at 5 minutes and 25 minutes for 4K and 2K respectively.
Ricoh has tougher competition when it comes to video in the 360 camera game – Insta 360’s One X has been a clear winner in this category, and has led to this camera even finding some fans when compared to action cameras like the GoPro Hero 7 and the DJI Osmo Action, thanks in large part to its fantastic built-in image stabilization.
The Ricoh Theta Z1 just frankly doesn’t impress in this regard. The sensors do allow for potentially better image quality overall, but the image stabilization is definitely lacking, as you can see below, and overall quality just isn’t there when measured against the Insta360 One X. For a fixed installation for real-time live-streaming, the Ricoh probably makes more sense, but video isn’t the device’s strength, and it’s a little disappointing given its still shooting prowess.
Features and sharing
The range of editing options available either via Theta+ or using the DNG files in both mobile and desktop phot editing software for the Theta Z1 is outstanding. You can really create and compose images in a wide variety of ways, including applying stickers and text that stick to the frame as a viewer navigates around the image. Sharing from the Theta app directly works with a number of platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and theta360.com, where you can get embeddable 360 images like those found in this post above.
Ricoh has done a great job making sure you can not only capture the best possible 360 images with this camera, but also share them with others. It’s also leading the pack when it comes to the range of options you have for getting creative with slicing up those 7K spherical images in a variety of ways for traditional flat image output, which is not surprising given the company’s heritage.
Bottom line
Simply put, the Ricoh Theta Z1 is the best 360 camera for still photos that you can buy for under $1000 – even if just squeaks under that line. It’s the best still photo 360 camera you can pick up for considerably more than that, too, given its sensor arrangement and other technical aspects of the device including its selectable aperture settings and RAW output.
The $999.95 asking price is definitely on the high end for this category – the Theta V retails for less than half that, as does the Insta360 One X. But I mentioned the Sony RX100 above, and the pricing is similar: You can get a compact camera for much less money, including very good ones, but the latest RX100 always commands a premium price, which people are willing to pay for the very best in-class device.
If want you want is the best still photography 360 camera on the market, than the Ricoh Theta Z1 is easily it, and if that’s the specific thing you’re looking for, than Ricoh has packed a lot of cutting edge tech into a small package with the Z1.
Source link
Ricoh’s Theta Z1 is the first truly premium consumer 360 camera Ricoh has a well-earned good reputation when it comes to building smart, technically excellent photographic equipment – including the almost legendary Ricoh GR series of pocketable APS-C cameras, which are a favorite among street photographers everywhere.

CES 2018: Checking in on new tech six months later
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/ces-2018-checking-in-on-new-tech-six-months-later/
CES 2018: Checking in on new tech six months later
Every year, the Consumer Electronics Show—known simply as CES— hits the tech world like a tempest, flinging new gadgets and lofty promises throughout the industry. The fervor quickly fades, though, and we’re left to wonder which products will make it to market and what trends will fade away faster than a platter of free bagels in the press room at the convention center.
We’re now six months out from CES 2018, which makes this a great time to look back at the show and its new products to see what has happened since then.
Google Assistant is still gathering momentum
CES 2017 was a breakout year for Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant. The helpful, disembodied entity showed up in everything from speakers to appliances. The 2018 show proved a similar opportunity for the Google Assistant. One of the big promises on the Google Assistant front was a wave of “smart displays” from companies like JBL and LG, but those products are only just getting ready to trickle out here in July.
Smart screens have also busted out of their small frames a bit since CES 2018, too. Samsung announced a TV with “ambient mode,” which allows it to operate as a smart home hub when it’s off. It replaces a small, auxiliary screen by leveraging your main display when it’s not in use.
Of course, Alexa has continued to grow during this time as well, but we have also seen more and more gadgets that integrate a mixture of assistants. For instance, the new Sonos Beam soundbar, which debuted last month, works with Google Assistant, Alexa, and even Apple’s Siri.
The consumer drone market has gotten even sadder for everyone except DJI
DJI is the 4 million pound gorilla in the consumer drone market, which made its lack of a new UAVs at CES conspicuous. Later in January, however, DJI announced its backpack-friendly Mavic Air drone, which added to its dominance in the $500-$1000 drone market, where it owns a market share of more than 70 percent. Lower-end companies like MJX and Syma that primarily deal in sub-$250 toy-style drones likely breathed a sigh of relief that the DJI juggernaut didn’t move into the true entry-level, where other companies survive.
Phone notches are everywhere
The iPhone X debuted well before CES 2018, but we knew it was likely to cause some ripple effects across the smartphone industry. One question was whether or not other manufacturers would embrace the “notch,” which places the front-facing cameras within the boundaries of the phone’s screen, creating a small dead-zone in the display. Halfway through 2018, the notch is alive and well, finding its way into high-end phones like the LG G7, the OnePlus 6, the Huawei P20, and the Asus ZenFone 5. Android P, which Google announced back at its 2018 I/O conference, also has integrated functions to help developers accommodate those screen cutouts. Looks like the notch is sticking around.
OLED TVs still rule for now
There’s never a shortage of new TVs at CES, and 2018 was no different. When it comes to consumer displays, OLED is still well represented at the top, primarily thanks to its deep blacks and high contrast ratios. But, while OLED was still exotic technology as recently as the 2015 show, it’s relatively common now. Several manufacturers were touting their new processing tech, including the LG a9 chip and Sony’s X1 processor, both of which are built to handle UHD and HDR content.
Since CES 2018, the amount of content available in HDR and UHD has increased dramatically. The wave started back in 2017 with Netflix and other popular streaming services, but now it has become a normal occurrence, especially for original content designed for streaming.
In terms of the more concept-oriented displays, Samsung plans to start rolling out its massive and modular TV it calls “The Wall,” in just a few months. LG’s impressive roll-up OLED TV, however, is still without an official release date, if it ever comes to market at all.
We also saw 8K TV creeping into the mix, with its huge resolution and complete lack of content support from any major channel. While the trickle of 8K TVs is notable, it’s not likely to capture much market share at all for at least a few years.
We still don’t have robot butlers, even though companies are trying
CES 2018 was full of robotic faces. From LG’s uncooperative CLOi Hub Robot that misbehaved during the press conference to the Aeolus robot that’s ready to serve you a beer, the march toward robotic servants continues, if slowly. Still, we’re frustratingly far from the Rosie, the Robot future The Jetsons promised us decades ago.
Samsung is sneaking its digital assistant into homes with connected appliances
In the past few weeks, Samsung has started bringing its digital assistant, Bixby, to the forefront of its marketing efforts. The voice assistant debuted in the Galaxy S8 smartphone as an answer to the Google Assistant or Siri, but now it’s making its voice heard in appliances like the $3,300 Family Hub fridge, which also has a 21.5-inch touchscreen. Samsung’s 2018 smart TV lineup also has Bixby built-in as an integrated feature. So, while we haven’t heard much from Bixby so far, it’s increasingly clear that Samsung sees it as a wayto keep people within its own gadget infrastructure.
Oculus Go still overshadowed most of the other VR headset
Facebook introduced its battery-powered, portable VR headset in the Fall before CES 2018 for release the following spring. And while there were lots of new headsets to see at the show, the Oculus loomed over them. The HTC Vive wireless VR headset is poised for release any time now, which is a big step for one of the major players in the space. The rest of the market is still relatively fragmented. Oculus, Sony, and HTC implemented price cuts on their equipment in the summer of 2017, which helped push the market closer to mainstream acceptance, but the future of omnipresent VR, or even AR headsets, still seems at least a few years away.
A fatal accident caused a setback for self-driving cars
Autonomous vehicles were a frequent topic of conversation at CES 2018. Toyota said it wanted its self-driving taxi fleet running by 2020 and GM said that its fleet of modified Bolt vehicles will take to the streets some time in 2019. In March of 2018, however, a fatal accident involving a self-driving Uber and a pedestrian sent shock waves through the industry and spurred Uber to put its autonomous vehicle program on hold.
Other companies, like Nvidia put their self-driving car programs on-hold, as well. Some, however, continued ahead as planned, like Google’s Waymo, which announced plans to buy 20,000 vehicles from Jaguar to get its self-driving taxi fleet up and running by 2020.

Having more batteries will allow you to extend the flying time, so we recommend you to get some extra batteries with the drone.
