The theorist Micah Silver in his book Figures in air, describes in a profound way how In the late 1960’s, loudspeaker amplification and audio processing technologies reached a new vision related to power, quality and scale. The book not only describes the technologies of audio, also reveal how this allowed large social reunions to experience the air waves produced by this new amplification developments.

Before the technologies of audio became available to the large stages of music festivals. The only places that offered a social immersion in amplified media representation were the “Movie Palaces” of the Hollywood film industry. High fidelity audio was only present in the industry of cinema.

Monterey Pop in 1967 was the first large festival in the way we know them now. The desire to produce large musical events spurred an evolution of musical representation and audio developments. These developments proliferated to most musical and staging productions, shaping the air the crowd experienced.

The Jamaican diaspora brought to the communal dance of dub, techniques developed in the studio, producing music recordings and their diverse “dub versions” and playing them back in the dancehalls or the streets.

The development of custom homemade XL speakers in a “Soundsystem” culture, allowed an appropriation of space in a more integral way, by distributing the speakers to contain the dancing mass, intending the experience of sound to be felt in the body, to be moved from the inside.

Dub as Musique Concrete is primarily studio music, that, made possible experimentation at the moment of the playback of the pieces. This allowed the space to be always present.

At GRM, a system of sound diffusion was formalized in 1974. The acousmonium was the ‘instrument’ François Bayle and the Groupe de Recherches Musicales designed to diffuse sound. This was a multifocal system, made out of diverse types of speakers, positioned ‘escenically’ in the space, (most of the time classic concert halls). This was designed to merge the space with spectromorphologies modifying the perception of the listener. This perception variates with the position of each one, making the experience a very personal and situational thing.

Sound technology is capable of shrinking the dimensions of space and this has direct impact on the way we experience ourselves in a surrounding sonic event. The composer Seth Cluett speaks about this impact, “This affordance can bring people together who are not spatially proximate, or also allow people to maintain the safety and anonymity of bodily separation.” (Cluet,2010,16)
