Last night I got high and wrote a program to find all of the unused elemental symbols. It turns out there’s 585 of them and it’s much less interesting the next day.
One interesting finding: I couldn’t be bothered to generate all possible one and two letter strings, so I asked ChatGPT to write me code that would do all that for me. It worked surprisingly well!
['a', 'd', 'e', 'g', 'h', 'j', 'l', 'm', 'q', 'r', 't', 'x', 'z', 'aa', 'ab', 'ad', 'ae', 'af', 'ah', 'ai', 'aj', 'ak', 'an', 'ao', 'ap', 'aq', 'av', 'aw', 'ax', 'ay', 'az', 'bb', 'bc', 'bd', 'bf', 'bg', 'bj', 'bl', 'bm', 'bn', 'bo', 'bp', 'bq', 'bs', 'bt', 'bu', 'bv', 'bw', 'bx', 'by', 'bz', 'cb', 'cc', 'cg', 'ch', 'ci', 'cj', 'ck', 'cp', 'cq', 'ct', 'cv', 'cw', 'cx', 'cy', 'cz', 'da', 'dc', 'dd', 'de', 'df', 'dg', 'dh', 'di', 'dj', 'dk', 'dl', 'dm', 'dn', 'do', 'dp', 'dq', 'dr', 'dt', 'du', 'dv', 'dw', 'dx', 'dz', 'ea', 'eb', 'ec', 'ed', 'ee', 'ef', 'eg', 'eh', 'ei', 'ej', 'ek', 'el', 'em', 'en', 'eo', 'ep', 'eq', 'et', 'ev', 'ew', 'ex', 'ey', 'ez', 'fa', 'fb', 'fc', 'fd', 'ff', 'fg', 'fh', 'fi', 'fj', 'fk', 'fn', 'fo', 'fp', 'fq', 'fs', 'ft', 'fu', 'fv', 'fw', 'fx', 'fy', 'fz', 'gb', 'gc', 'gf', 'gg', 'gh', 'gi', 'gj', 'gk', 'gl', 'gm', 'gn', 'go', 'gp', 'gq', 'gr', 'gs', 'gt', 'gu', 'gv', 'gw', 'gx', 'gy', 'gz', 'ha', 'hb', 'hc', 'hd', 'hh', 'hi', 'hj', 'hk', 'hl', 'hm', 'hn', 'hp', 'hq', 'hr', 'ht', 'hu', 'hv', 'hw', 'hx', 'hy', 'hz', 'ia', 'ib', 'ic', 'id', 'ie', 'if', 'ig', 'ih', 'ii', 'ij', 'ik', 'il', 'im', 'io', 'ip', 'iq', 'is', 'it', 'iu', 'iv', 'iw', 'ix', 'iy', 'iz', 'ja', 'jb', 'jc', 'jd', 'je', 'jf', 'jg', 'jh', 'ji', 'jj', 'jk', 'jl', 'jm', 'jn', 'jo', 'jp', 'jq', 'jr', 'js', 'jt', 'ju', 'jv', 'jw', 'jx', 'jy', 'jz', 'ka', 'kb', 'kc', 'kd', 'ke', 'kf', 'kg', 'kh', 'ki', 'kj', 'kk', 'kl', 'km', 'kn', 'ko', 'kp', 'kq', 'ks', 'kt', 'ku', 'kv', 'kw', 'kx', 'ky', 'kz', 'lb', 'lc', 'ld', 'le', 'lf', 'lg', 'lh', 'lj', 'lk', 'll', 'lm', 'ln', 'lo', 'lp', 'lq', 'ls', 'lt', 'lw', 'lx', 'ly', 'lz', 'ma', 'mb', 'me', 'mf', 'mh', 'mi', 'mj', 'mk', 'ml', 'mm', 'mp', 'mq', 'mr', 'ms', 'mu', 'mv', 'mw', 'mx', 'my', 'mz', 'nc', 'nf', 'ng', 'nj', 'nk', 'nl', 'nm', 'nn', 'nq', 'nr', 'ns', 'nt', 'nu', 'nv', 'nw', 'nx', 'ny', 'nz', 'oa', 'ob', 'oc', 'od', 'oe', 'of', 'oh', 'oi', 'oj', 'ok', 'ol', 'om', 'on', 'oo', 'op', 'oq', 'or', 'ot', 'ou', 'ov', 'ow', 'ox', 'oy', 'oz', 'pc', 'pe', 'pf', 'pg', 'ph', 'pi', 'pj', 'pk', 'pl', 'pn', 'pp', 'pq', 'ps', 'pv', 'pw', 'px', 'py', 'pz', 'qa', 'qb', 'qc', 'qd', 'qe', 'qf', 'qg', 'qh', 'qi', 'qj', 'qk', 'ql', 'qm', 'qn', 'qo', 'qp', 'qq', 'qr', 'qs', 'qt', 'qu', 'qv', 'qw', 'qx', 'qy', 'qz', 'rc', 'rd', 'ri', 'rj', 'rk', 'rl', 'rm', 'ro', 'rp', 'rq', 'rr', 'rs', 'rt', 'rv', 'rw', 'rx', 'ry', 'rz', 'sa', 'sd', 'sf', 'sh', 'sj', 'sk', 'sl', 'so', 'sp', 'sq', 'ss', 'st', 'su', 'sv', 'sw', 'sx', 'sy', 'sz', 'td', 'tf', 'tg', 'tj', 'tk', 'tn', 'to', 'tp', 'tq', 'tr', 'tt', 'tu', 'tv', 'tw', 'tx', 'ty', 'tz', 'ua', 'ub', 'uc', 'ud', 'ue', 'uf', 'ug', 'uh', 'ui', 'uj', 'uk', 'ul', 'um', 'un', 'uo', 'up', 'uq', 'ur', 'us', 'ut', 'uu', 'uv', 'uw', 'ux', 'uy', 'uz', 'va', 'vb', 'vc', 'vd', 've', 'vf', 'vg', 'vh', 'vi', 'vj', 'vk', 'vl', 'vm', 'vn', 'vo', 'vp', 'vq', 'vr', 'vs', 'vt', 'vu', 'vv', 'vw', 'vx', 'vy', 'vz', 'wa', 'wb', 'wc', 'wd', 'we', 'wf', 'wg', 'wh', 'wi', 'wj', 'wk', 'wl', 'wm', 'wn', 'wo', 'wp', 'wq', 'wr', 'ws', 'wt', 'wu', 'wv', 'ww', 'wx', 'wy', 'wz', 'xa', 'xb', 'xc', 'xd', 'xf', 'xg', 'xh', 'xi', 'xj', 'xk', 'xl', 'xm', 'xn', 'xo', 'xp', 'xq', 'xr', 'xs', 'xt', 'xu', 'xv', 'xw', 'xx', 'xy', 'xz', 'ya', 'yc', 'yd', 'ye', 'yf', 'yg', 'yh', 'yi', 'yj', 'yk', 'yl', 'ym', 'yn', 'yo', 'yp', 'yq', 'yr', 'ys', 'yt', 'yu', 'yv', 'yw', 'yx', 'yy', 'yz', 'za', 'zb', 'zc', 'zd', 'ze', 'zf', 'zg', 'zh', 'zi', 'zj', 'zk', 'zl', 'zm', 'zo', 'zp', 'zq', 'zs', 'zt', 'zu', 'zv', 'zw', 'zx', 'zy', 'zz']

53: Camp Lo // Uptown Saturday Night
Tumblr media
Uptown Saturday Night Camp Lo 1997, Profile
There’s an old Donald Glover bit about how people who rave about ‘80s hip-hop need to go back and actually listen to it, because it’s mostly just guys saying shit like, (in a Melle Mel candence) “Well I went to the hat store todayyyy / and I got myself a hat / ha HA!” I think of ‘80s rap as equivalent to ‘50s rock: it’s raw and exciting stuff, but for the modern listener it’s bound to feel a little primitive because you’re hearing a genre before its techniques and technology have fully matured. And that makes the ‘90s hip-hop’s equivalent of rock’s ‘60s, the first decade when artists had a fixed foundation to build upon, and the genre exploded into a psychedelic variety of styles that has continued to expand to this day.
Camp Lo had as idiosyncratic and unprecedented a sound on their debut Uptown Saturday Night as Wu-Tang Clan, OutKast, Digable Planets, or the Beastie Boys did. Released in a year when Juicy Couture velour defined urban style, Camp Lo’s emcees were duded up like Blaxploitation-era pimps, spitting a thieves’ argot studded with references spanning 70 years of New York culture. Their beats, largely provided by DJ Ski, were sparkling boom bap that pulled as much from Roy Ayers as James Brown. According to Ski, Geechi Suede and Sonny Cheeba talked to each other in the same impenetrable slang they rapped in, bringing to mind the phenomenon of twin language:
Check the queen bee, Lady Ree digging Grace Check the place 3 o’clock. Shot? No, we ain’t Fret and cock, bring it in the paint? No such thing Flash the dynamite, sing my superfly to the Cleopatra in the casino with gold sugar Dig my harlequin and drench you in my Donald Goines (from “Coolie High”)
Short of discovering some remote enclave in the Bronx where people talk like this, it’s safe to assume Suede and Cheeba had developed a mutually-reinforcing linguistic bond, where (to pull a quote from that twin language story) “words are invented and abbreviated or restricted codes are used because full explanations are redundant.” Though there were a few emcees with more variable flows, nobody in the game sounded slicker than Camp Lo.
youtube
As fly as the rhymes are, Uptown Saturday Night is a producer’s showcase. Though he doesn’t get touted as frequently as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, or Large Professor, DJ Ski is as great a producer as New York has ever produced. Dusty literary journal The Kenyon Review, of all places, published a great (and uncredited?) piece on Ski’s beats for Camp Lo a few years back that’s worth reading. Here’s the writer on Uptown closer Sparkle (Mr. Midnight Mix)”:
“Appearing at a time when boom bap beats were at their peak, the song has no drums, but somehow still has a very high nod factor. Extremely low in the mix are what sound like the original drums, so low that they might only be audible because of headphone bleed in the vocal track. But it is really the flow of Geechi Suede and Sonny Cheeba that retains the rhythm of the original, heavily swung drums. The vocals thus carry a ghost rhythm propelling the track forward, even as the vibes and fluid, filtered bass and piano lines lazily rise and fall, cresting here, submerged there.”
Great shit. Uptown covers a lot of stylistic ground, though high-rolling party tunes are the order of the day, like “Luchini (This is It)” with an irresistible trumpet loop launching itself off a thwacking snare hit. Nearly every beat on the record is indelible, from the kaiju-sized horns of “Krystal Karrington” to the cooing, vibe-chilled “Coolie High” (a preview of Ski’s 2010s work on Curren$y’s classic Pilot Talk trilogy). And, on the warped Twilight Zone-sampling “Negro League,” Ski even seems to have an ear on the off-kilter underground sound El-P was creating with Company Flow.
youtube
Various forms of fuckery on the part of Camp Lo’s label conspired to prevent the band from following up on Uptown Saturday Night till 2002, and by then it was too late to recapture their former momentum. They’ve had sparks of inspiration in the decades since, but we’ll never know whether the magic of their debut would’ve been reproducible under better circumstances. Regardless, Uptown Saturday Night has a place among the greatest records of rap’s first golden decade.

Generally speaking, cinephiles love onscreen gangsters. As the writer-director of the gangsteresque dramedy Hustlers, Lorene Scafaria, recently told the New York Times, "we can name 1,000 of those characters by their first and last names. We've enjoyed them." Indeed, Hustlers feels akin to the crime films of both Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, Casino) and Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice). This movie too is zingy, surreal, and wildly entertaining. The key difference between it and the many great films that depict men doing horrible things for understandable reasons—love, money, power—is that Hustlers asks, why not women?
Inspired by a real-life crime spree and a 2015 New York magazine article by Jessica Pressler that examined the ringleaders behind it, Hustlers follows Destiny (Constance Wu): a novice in stripping who gets wise to the culture in Manhattan during the flashy mid-aughts. Newly employed at a club flush with Wall Street bros and cash in 2007, Destiny meets her mentor, Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), in a sequence that merits an updated definition of "legendary." In the reflexive way that embattled women often recognize and embrace each other, Ramona envelops Destiny in her chinchilla coat and teaches her the tricks of their trade—all of which boil down to how to best keep a man wanting and thus spending more.
Then the Great Recession hits, and many of the men who caused it vacate the clubs into which they'd once poured their ill-gotten gains. The financial crisis dovetails with Destiny becoming pregnant by a deadbeat boyfriend, retreating to Queens, and struggling to support her beloved grandmother and baby daughter with little more than a GED. In 2010, Destiny returns to the hollowed-out club of her heyday and to her friendship with Ramona, who has fresh recruits (Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart) and a new plan. To expedite their usual process of teasing money out of corporate suits, the quartet resorts to "fishing" for men, spiking their drinks with a blend of ketamine and MDMA, and maxing out their credit cards. "It's stolen money," Ramona tells Destiny, referring to their top clientele's robbing of millions of people of their livelihoods. Why not steal it back?
The viewer's proxy for this bonkers scheme is a journalist named Elizabeth (Julia Stiles), who interviews Destiny and Ramona individually in 2015. When Destiny starts waxing nostalgic about happier times, Elizabeth cuts in with, "Let's get back to the drugging." Her eyes widen at the audacity and absurdity of it all. When Destiny offers her a cup of tea, she hesitates before sipping. These comical cues feel necessary, but also a bit grating. Getting viewers to like male characters who kill people, sans apologia, has never been difficult, but persuading them to like female characters who hurt men is an altogether different beast. Hustlers chips away at that weird double standard, but stops short of obliterating it. The piling on of consequences grows thick in the end, eliciting viewers' sympathy for a contrite and seemingly reformed Destiny above all. Yet the first half of the film is more effective in generating empathy. We get to know and like these women before their actions turn rotten—and even then, their motivations are clear.
Hustlers' opening shot tracks Destiny from the dressing room through the strip club on her first night of work to Janet Jackson's "Control," which sets up the gaze through which the audience will view the narrative while revealing the protagonist's primary goal: Destiny wants to hold the reins of her own life. As she tells Ramona, who also is a single mom to a young daughter, "I don't want to rely on anyone for anything." Theirs is a platonic love affair, as Destiny's dreams ignite as she observes Ramona's fierce independence and entrepreneurial streak.
"When did things start to get out of control?" Elizabeth asks Destiny. "Ramona was always in control," Destiny replies. When these two are together, the men in the room tend to fuzz at the edges. "We are hurricanes," Ramona whispers in Destiny's ear. The men in their path are collateral damage. So when the women's world spins from dollar-drenched dreaminess into a no-hands-on-the-wheels nightmare, Destiny is at first too high in the whirlwind of their creation to register the change.
If they'd been born into better circumstances, if their lives had taken other turns, or if society functioned differently, these women might be working on Wall Street. Instead they start at the bottom of the strip club hierarchy, with club managers, security, and DJs taking deep cuts from their nightly earnings. But Ramona sees the scoreboard from above. Everyone is hustling, to varying degrees of success. "This whole country is a strip club," she says to Elizabeth in her interview. "You've got people tossing the money and people doing the dance." Ramona's mix of mama-bear cuddliness and long-sighted, feline ferocity cements her place on film history's list of notable heavies. Her opening quip to Destiny, "Doesn't money make you horny?" encapsulates her worldview. Her code is capitalist to the extreme: Get money for yourself and your loved ones in this screwed-up world, and screw anyone who gets in your way.
Hustlers, it must be said, is hustle incarnate. The film's editor, production designer, the majority of the cast, and three of its executive producers are women (the other two are McKay and Will Ferrell). Scafaria, originally hired as Hustlers' screenwriter, had to convince her higher-ups that she, rather than Scorsese or McKay, should direct the picture. As producer Jessica Elbaum told the entertainment site Vulture in an oral history of the film's production, "We were prepping by February, we made the movie in March, we wrapped it in May, and the movie's coming out in September, which is insane." Crazier still is how the 29-day shoot and rush to theaters shows not at all in the movie itself. Impeccably acted, plotted, paced, researched, and composed, Hustlers is an immersive thrill ride through every lush and period-conscious frame.
On top of that, Scafaria avoids both romanticizing the strip-club scene and exoticizing the profession of her diverse ensemble. She shows the strippers' friendships and fights, base injustices and heightened coups, and how getting by looks different depending on where you stand. Rapper Cardi B—a former stripper herself—who appears in a crowd-pleasing cameo, has said that Hustlers matches many facets of her own experience. "I recommend every stripper to see it," she said of the film in an Instagram post. "Especially if you are a New York stripper—like, you definitely will relate." As a woman who hasn't climbed a pole for money but has had to dance in other ways (haven't we all?), I found myself relating too.

COIN// main characters
Clove Dayholt// tough talking, sarcastic ex-COIN captain
clove is all bruises, leather, and brute force. she was one of the leaders at COIN, but still something of a joke to those not in her group. that sort of thing sticks with you, and clove has spent the majority of her life trying to prove something to herself that she’s not even sure is achievable. clinging tight to a strict moral code, clove is just trying to make something of herself after losing her defining characteristics: COIN and Ms. Porter’s approval.
Amber Moon// flighty, observant ex-COIN sniper
it should be impossible to miss amber, with her pink hair and even pinker sniper rifle, but somehow she has made a business out of being a ghost. quiet and observant, amber lives on the outskirts of groups, making herself useful with her singularly dangerous skill set. there was a rumor at COIN that amber had never missed a shot - and it was true. now truly on her own without COIN, amber is just fighting to keep from losing herself in the silence.
Jade Lewis// bold, dramatic ex-COIN grifter
never one to fade into the background, jade got her start as a DJ before she was recruited into COIN. once there, she became legendary for talking her way into some of the most secure places in the world. a smooth, quick talking genius, she wasn’t left out to dry by COIN’s disbandment. instead, she’s perfectly happy returning to her DJ career, making a name for herself... and stealing a few things along the way.
Ren Price// wild, manic ex-COIN driver
no one could figure out if ren was genius or just plain crazy. while she seemingly worked magic with whatever car, plane, or boat she was put in, her detached attitude and manic grin made people shy away from her in the halls of COIN. while she had pulled her team out of many tough situations by the skin of her teeth, people were still afraid that her wild driving was less a virtuosos calculated understanding and more a crazy person’s sheer luck. without COIN around to keep her reigned in, ren makes her name driving in dangerous, illegal races around the world.
Sophie Wu// calculating, careful CIA hacker
sophie found people more interesting than computers, sometimes. a well-known hacker, she had joined the CIA right out of highschool. fortunately, the CIA allowed her to meet all sorts of people. sophie’s sense of adventure and empathy allowed her to connect easily, which was a useful skill. now the CIA has put that to its use again, having her co-lead the project to bring members of COIN back together again. it’ll take everything she has just to keep up with the sheer amount of crazy that project has bred.
bonus +
Tumblr media
Dahlia Horne// dark, dangerous MOLTEN assassin
formerly a member of COIN, dahlia was left bereft after its disbandment. soon, a mysterious organization called MOLTEN recruited the former assassin, giving her the sense of purpose she’d missed after COIN. dahlia was single-minded and incredibly dangerous, almost unable to let go of a mission, either successful or failed. eventually, MOLTEN reunited her with other ex-COIN members they had recruited, and she finally learned their true purpose: to plunge the world into anarchy.

Talking about the good old days
The Shaolin Soul adventure began twenty years ago, in 1998. Olivier Carrié, better known as Uncle O, is a French DJ, producer and graphic designer. He is the creator of the Shaolin Soul collection. Mixtapes of great soul-music songs, Shaolin Soul brings together music used as samples by Wu-Tang Clan, a legendary New York band. This four-volume collection is a diverse selection of soul and funk masterpieces from the 60s and 70s including songs by the Jackson Five, Al Green, Barry White and more. Uncle O plays original versions of songs sampled by American rap with record covers that tell us about the good old days.
For Shaolin Soul, Uncle O creates his own compilations using the name of the universe of Wu-Tang taken from the practice of Chinese martial art: Shaolin Kung Fu. On each cover, there is a sentence overhanging the name of the collection "Everybody's talking about the good old days". This sentence comes from the lyrics of the title Can it Be all so simple by Wu-Tang Clan. The singer starts his song by talking about the good old days "Hey you know everybody's talking about the "good old days" Everybody! The good old days. Well, let's talk about the good old days". The introduction of this title fits perfectly with the will of the French Dj. Indeed, the artist wishes "to bring the young public of rap to listen to the originals", "to talk about the good old days".
Wu-Tang Clan's group takes up the great themes of American rap with lyrics about poverty, drugs and black consciousness in the streets of New York. This is what the French graphic designer translates in the covers of his compilations. The name "Shaolin Soul" is recurrent on the four volumes with a character similar to tags or letters painted with stencils. The name appears poorly printed but remains very visible thanks to the use of bright colors.
The photographs are faithful to the will of Uncle O. Thanks to specific codes, they perfectly transpose the man of the New York neighborhoods, the street gangster. Indeed, we can see the impassive look of these men standing in the streets of New York. The use of black and white photography associated with the decorations and clothing allows us to historically situate the scenes in the 80/90s.
With a simple design, a black and white photograph that stands out on a black cover overhung by its name with colorful characters, Uncle O makes us think of the good old days. For the past 20 years, this French dj and graphic designer reminds us of the years when soul and funk music made whole streets dance. Thanks to the samples of many artists, including Wu-Tang Clan, these musics continue to reason in our heads. The Shaolin Soul collection allows us to remember, listen to and remember the origin of our favorite music through a typical design of the 80/90s.
