Ideas For Privacy Fence Installation
Tumblr media
Whether you're using a fence to separate your lot from your neighbor's or to keep little ones away from the pool or road, fences can be as functional as they are stylish. Fences are crucial to backyard design, providing privacy and safety in your outdoor space. With many options regarding materials and styles, costs can quickly add up. Here are some key ideas for fence installation Vancouver:
Determine Your Purpose and Budget
Before installing a fence, clearly define why you need one—for privacy, security, keeping pets in, or enhancing your property's appearance. Establish a realistic budget based on the size of your property, desired materials, and additional features.
Hire a Professional or DIY
Decide if you will hire a professional fence installer or do it yourself. DIY can save money but requires skills, tools, and time. Professionals have the expertise or a proper fence installation. If DIY, get advice from a fence ng-class and consider renting an auger to stand posts.
Check Local Regulations
Review municipal guidelines regarding fence height, location, and materials. Obtain necessary permits to avoid issues later.
Prepare the Area
Clear the fence line and remove any old fencing to reduce installation costs. Dig holes for posts to the proper depth, typically one-third the post length plus a few inches for gravel and concrete.
Install Posts and Fabric
Set wood posts in holes, level, and plumb. Add gravel for drainage, then pour concrete around the bases. Unroll the fence fabric and attach it with tension bands to the end and corner posts. Use fence ties to secure the fabric to line posts every 2 feet.
Add Rails and Gates
Slide the top rail through the fabric loops and secure it to the posts. Attach the gates to the gate post using hinges and latches. Ensure the gates are level and swing freely.
Tension the Fabric
Use a stretcher to pull the chain link fabric taut and secure it to tension bands on the end and corner posts. Adjust until the fabric is evenly stretched.
How much does a privacy fence cost?
The cost of a privacy fence will vary based on its height and the type of material you choose. Other factors, such as labor and location, will also impact the amount you should expect to pay for fence installation.
Choose the Right Material
Common fence materials include wood, vinyl, aluminum, wrought iron, and chain link. Consider durability, maintenance requirements, and aesthetics when selecting the best option.
Some are mentioned below:
Textured Concrete
Concrete is relatively cheap per square foot and can be poured into fence molds or textured while still wet.
Chicken Wire
Chicken wire also allows climbing vines to scale up and protect yards and gardens from critters and wildlife.
Picket Fence
Picket fences are timeless. While not suited for enclosing a large acreage (or large pets), this cheap fence idea is ideal for smaller yards and suburban neighborhoods.
Split Rail
This cheap fence installation idea is also great for farmhouses and ranch homes. Because of their sparse appearance, split-rail fences require less material than full-plank fences, and their price is lower, too.
Landscaping Layers
In this backyard, the metal fencing is sandwiched between two layers of lush greenery. The flora helps to disguise the material against the stunning view, but the fence still adds structure and safety for the family environment.
In Conclusion
By considering your needs, regulations, and fence installation options, you can find the right fence solution for your property. With some preparation and effort, you can easily install an attractive and functional fence.

Outdoor Fun Activities for Kids and Families: Creating Lasting Memories
Outdoor activities are a wonderful way to create lasting memories with your children while encouraging them to enjoy nature and stay active. Whether you're exploring a local park, embarking on a family hike, or simply spending time in your backyard, outdoor fun activities offer numerous benefits for children and families. Here are some fantastic ideas to inspire your next outdoor adventure, brought to you.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
A nature scavenger hunt is a fun and educational activity that can be tailored to suit any age group. Create a list of items for your children to find, such as different types of leaves, rocks, flowers, and insects. You can make it more challenging by including specific colors, shapes, or textures. Not only does this activity promote exploration and observation, but it also helps kids develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
How to Get Started:
Prepare a list of items to find.
Equip your kids with a bag or container for their treasures.
Set boundaries to keep the hunt safe.
Celebrate their discoveries with a small reward or a group discussion about what they found.
Backyard Camping
Transform your backyard into a campsite for a night of outdoor fun. Backyard camping is a great way to introduce kids to the joys of camping without the need to travel far from home. Set up a tent, roll out sleeping bags, and gather around a campfire (or a fire pit) to roast marshmallows and tell stories.
Tips for a Successful Backyard Camping Experience:
Involve your kids in setting up the campsite.
Plan a simple outdoor meal or snacks.
Have a flashlight or lantern handy for nighttime activities.
Prepare for weather changes by having extra blankets or a plan to move indoors if necessary.
Garden Projects
Gardening with kids is not only fun but also teaches them about responsibility and the environment. Start with easy-to-grow plants like sunflowers, tomatoes, or herbs. Assign your children tasks such as watering, weeding, and harvesting to give them a sense of ownership and pride in their garden.
Fun Garden Ideas:
Create a fairy garden with miniature plants and decorations.
Start a vegetable patch and let your kids pick their favorite veggies to grow.
Build a butterfly garden to attract these beautiful insects.
Outdoor Art and Craft
Take your art supplies outside and let your children's creativity flow. Nature provides endless inspiration for crafts and artwork. Collect leaves, flowers, and sticks to create natural collages, or use sidewalk chalk to draw colorful masterpieces on the driveway or sidewalk.
Craft Ideas:
Leaf rubbings: Place a leaf under a piece of paper and rub a crayon over it to reveal its texture.
Nature mandalas: Arrange collected natural items in a circular pattern.
Rock painting: Paint small rocks with vibrant colors or designs.
Bird Watching
Bird watching is a peaceful and engaging activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Equip your kids with binoculars and a bird guidebook, and head to a local park or nature reserve. Encourage them to observe different bird species and take notes or draw pictures of their findings.
How to Enhance the Experience:
Set up a bird feeder in your backyard to attract local birds.
Create a bird-watching journal to record sightings.
Use a bird identification app to learn more about the species you encounter.
Water Play
Water play is a perfect way to cool off on a hot day while having fun. From simple activities like running through a sprinkler to more elaborate setups like water balloon fights or slip-and-slides, there are endless ways to enjoy water play.
Ideas for Water Fun:
Set up a small inflatable pool for splashing and playing.
Organize a water balloon toss or relay race.
Create a DIY water wall using recycled materials and a fence.
Family Hikes
Hiking is a fantastic way to explore nature and get some exercise. Choose family-friendly trails that are appropriate for your children's ages and abilities. Bring along snacks, plenty of water, and a map or GPS device. Encourage your kids to observe their surroundings, look for wildlife, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Tips for a Successful Hike:
Start with shorter, easier trails and gradually increase the difficulty.
Dress appropriately for the weather and trail conditions.
Pack a first aid kit and any necessary medications.
Plan for breaks and allow time for exploration and rest.
Biking Adventures
Biking is a great way to explore your neighborhood or local parks. Make sure everyone has a properly fitted helmet and that bikes are in good working condition. Plan a route that includes interesting stops, such as playgrounds, nature areas, or ice cream shops.
How to Make Biking Fun:
Organize a family bike parade with decorated bikes.
Create a scavenger hunt that can be completed by bike.
Plan a picnic at the halfway point of your ride.
Stargazing
Stargazing is a magical activity that can spark a lifelong interest in astronomy. Find a spot away from city lights, bring a blanket, and lie down to observe the night sky. Use a stargazing app to identify constellations, planets, and other celestial objects.
Enhancing the Stargazing Experience:
Bring a telescope or binoculars for a closer look at the stars.
Plan your stargazing on a night with minimal moonlight for better visibility.
Share stories or myths about the constellations you see.
Sports and Games
Playing sports and games outside is a great way to keep kids active and entertained. Whether it's a game of soccer, frisbee, or tag, there are countless options to choose from. Set up a designated play area in your yard or visit a local park with open spaces for running and playing.
Popular Outdoor Games:
Capture the Flag
Kickball
Relay races
Tug of war
Outdoor fun activities provide endless opportunities for children and families to bond, learn, and enjoy nature. From simple backyard games to adventurous hikes, there's something for everyone to enjoy. By spending time outdoors, kids can develop a love for nature, stay active, and create cherished memories. Your Guide to Purchase Swimming Pool Fencing In Australia
Tumblr media
Deciding about your property's best swimming pool fencing can be challenging. Most people have no idea of where to start, and there are so many options to confuse buyers, but since this fencing is mandatory, they have no other choice than to decide without any delay. The confusion in purchasing swimming pool fencing can be eliminated using a guide that tells you what to consider and what types to focus on during purchasing. We have come up with the best pool fence shopping tips to simplify your shopping process.
UNDERSTAND THE POOL SAFETY RULES
Before investing in any pool fencing installation, you must be fully aware of the pool fencing laws, standards, and guidelines to follow in Australia.
This is mandatory as drowning remains the primary cause of death among children below five years old. This data has forced the Australian government to create standards and acts related to swimming pool fencing. Basically, there are three different standards to apply, and the one you use will depend on when the swimming pool was constructed. All these rules suggest that in-ground pools and spas will need swimming pool fencing. Any water body that can hold water up to 30 cm deep will require swimming pool fencing. However, there are some guidelines on water bodies where swimming pool fencing is not needed, and the details are presented below.
BARRIERS AREN'T REQUIRED FOR:
Inflatable swimming pools (typically toddler or wading pools)
Small inflatable pools that do not consist of multiple components
Bird baths
Fountains
Water supply/storage tanks
Fish ponds
Dams
Baths used for personal hygiene and emptied after each use
Spas inside a building (e.g. in a bathroom) used for personal hygiene and emptied after each use
Pools or spas that cannot contain a water depth of more than 300 mm
CHILD SAFETY GATES
The pool fencing should have a child safety gate equipped with a self-latching lock and self-closing mechanism. Nothing is better than a glass gate with a magnetic latch system for enhanced safety.
SWIMMING POOL FENCING TYPES
The selection becomes very easy when you know the details of different pool fencing materials used in Australia. Some details are presented below, and we will begin with wrought iron fencing.
WHAT IS WROUGHT IRON POOL FENCING?
The first noticeable thing about these fences is that they are very robust. But the downside is that they are expensive and not appealing or aesthetically pleasing. Another downside is that wrought iron requires excessive maintenance, as in the absence of care and attention, this material will start catching rust. Maintenance is easy, as you just have to clean it using soapy water and paint it if rusting is detected.
GLASS POOL FENCING
Glass pool fencing is a luxurious and pleasing solution for swimming pool fencing in Australia. They are available in different types, like semi-frameless glass pool fencing and frameless glass pool fencing. The glass used in these fences is tempered glass with a thickness of 12 mm for superior durability. This glass is six times stronger than regular glass and is engineered to withstand severe weather conditions and heavy usage. Another benefit of glass pool fencing is that you will enjoy stunning views of the surroundings due to its completely transparent nature. This transparency makes this fencing type ideal for decks, gardens and patios.
VINYL POOL FENCING
Vinyl swimming pool fences have emerged as a potent and impressive solution in recent years due to their resistance against all weather conditions. Vinyl pool fencing makes a statement of beauty and quality, and it is effortless to install through DIY. Vinyl pool fences are made to resist water, humidity, sunlight and chemicals, and this particular feature makes them a top choice among buyers. Manufacturers of vinyl pool fencing install the bottom rail with reinforced metal for added strength and durability. The gates offered with this fencing come with self-closing and a two-way pool safety latch.
CHAIN LINK OR ALUMINIUM POOL FENCING
Aluminium pool fencing is also popular in Australia for several reasons, such as low maintenance, lightweight, and superior looks. This fencing is also easy to install through DIY, and premium-quality aluminium with a powder-coated finish is used in manufacturing. This is an ideal solution for homeowners looking for robust, cost-effective, durable swimming pool fencing. You can get it customised as per your requirements, and the manufacturers ensure that Australian Standards for Safety Barriers for swimming pools are followed during manufacturing and installation.
Then there are mesh pool fences, and they are not as durable as aluminium glass or wrought iron fences. This is an affordable option and a favourite among swimming pool owners who don't care much about privacy. This fencing is removable, and this is the top USP as you can open up the area for a poolside party or barbecue.

Safety Considerations: Safety should always be a top priority when it comes to pool decks. Professional contractors are well-versed in safety regulations and guidelines, implementing features such as non-slip surfaces, proper drainage systems, and secure fencing to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries. By entrusting the job to experienced professionals, you can create a safe environment for your family, guests, and patrons to enjoy.
Efficiency and Timeliness: Time is of the essence when it comes to construction projects, especially ones that involve outdoor spaces. Pool deck contractors have the necessary resources and manpower to efficiently manage the project from start to finish. By adhering to strict timelines and schedules, they ensure timely completion without compromising on quality, allowing you to start enjoying your new pool deck sooner rather than later.
Cost-Effectiveness: While hiring professional contractors may seem like an additional expense, it can actually save you money in the long run. DIY projects or hiring inexperienced laborers may result in costly mistakes, rework, and repairs down the line. By investing in professional services upfront, you can avoid these pitfalls and achieve superior results that add value to your property.
Choosing the Right Pool Deck Contractor
When it comes to selecting a pool deck contractor in Orlando, it's essential to do your due diligence. Here are a few factors to consider:
Credentials and Licenses: Ensure that the contractor is properly licensed, bonded, and insured to perform the work in your area. This not only demonstrates their credibility but also protects you from liability in the event of accidents or damages.
Portfolio and References: Review the contractor's portfolio of past projects to gauge their style, quality of work, and versatility. Additionally, don't hesitate to ask for references or testimonials from satisfied clients to validate their reputation and reliability.
Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication is key to a successful project. Choose a contractor who listens to your ideas, communicates clearly and promptly, and keeps you informed throughout the process. A collaborative approach ensures that your vision is realized to perfection.
Transparency and Pricing: Request detailed estimates from multiple contractors and compare them carefully. Beware of unusually low bids, as they may indicate subpar materials or craftsmanship. Instead, opt for a contractor who offers transparent pricing and explains the breakdown of costs upfront.
Warranty and Maintenance: Inquire about the contractor's warranty policy and post-installation support. A reputable contractor stands behind their workmanship and may offer warranties on materials and labor. Additionally, discuss maintenance requirements and recommendations to keep your pool deck in pristine condition for years to come.
A beautifully designed and expertly constructed pool deck can enhance the allure and functionality of your outdoor space, transforming it into a luxurious retreat for relaxation and entertainment. By enlisting the services of professional pool deck contractors in Orlando, you can unlock the full potential of your poolside oasis while ensuring quality, safety, and peace of mind. Whether you're planning a residential backyard paradise or a commercial resort-style pool area, investing in professional expertise is the first step towards realizing your vision and creating lasting memories for years to come.

Pergola building is on the rise
Tumblr media
Let’s face it, investing in improving your home is always a good idea.  It’s value only increases and you will gain years of enjoyment from any enhancements. Pergola Builder In Miami in your backyard is one of the most popular upgrades right alongside building a pool.  It’s no wonder home improvements are on the rise according to NPR, U.S. homeowners are on track to spend more than ever this year…”
What Makes Building A Pergola So Special?
Pergola Building Company In Miami is like adding an extra room to your home. A pergola provides additional space for an outdoor kitchen. It also allows you to keep the mess outside when entertaining guests. It’s no wonder that 3 out of 4 homeowners surveyed by Porch.com have completed major projects over the last year including outdoor pergolas. Check out this article 5 backyard design ideas.
What To Consider When It Comes to Pergola Building
There are a variety of options out there when it comes to choosing your particular style. The most important factor to consider is durability and budget.  Many home improvement sites offer DIY wooden pergolas, these are pretty simple to build and the cost to acquire one is the least expensive. However, they do require maintenance, as the wood will wear and rot over time if not properly maintained.  Also, depending on where you live, wooden pergolas may not be up to county code.  In the event of a major storm it’s possible your wooden pergola may become a projectile. Therefore, the initial cost may actually end up costing you more.
In comparison, aluminum pergolas are studier, they require no maintenance and most often do adhere to county code restrictions. Miami Dade county has one of the toughest requirements when it comes to the pergola building requirements. This is no coincidence given the area’s propensity to hurricanes. You can apply for a pergola building permit by visiting this link for Miami Dade Zoning.
How Large Should I Make My Pergola
The size of pergola you build has to do with space. However, it’s not just about the physical space; it’s important to consider zoning restrictions. Often times your local county will require you to keep physical structures a specific distance from your home or fence line. This spacing is an important consideration. Also, a good pro-tip when building a pergola is to ask your contractor what are the standard sizes available. If you stick to a standard size, you can save money on the construction. Many Aluminum pergola builders can source raw materials for less when they are dealing with standard sizes that are readily available in the market. Perhaps an extra foot up or down in the size of your pergola can result in a big savings.
Once all these factors are considered, it just becomes of a matter of making beautiful memories in your new living space!
Home Improvement Pergola Builders Miami Plans can assist you in constructing a much-needed structure in your backyard to supply shade, cover your hot tub, or simply transform an outdoor space into something unique.
Reason Why People Want Pergolas can vary from basic to difficult, depending on the layout you select, so make sure you comprehend your ability level before beginning. What Should the Ideal Size of the Pergola depend on your requirements, building instructions, tool and material lists, schematics, and images?

What was the best compliment you've ever received on your fanfic? When you write a story, do you ever skip ahead/write some parts before the others or do you always write the scenes in order? What are your favorite domestic fluff headcanons for Valoris?
Thank you for the lovely ask my dearest Tovarishch. 😘💕💐🦀🌻🦠
I admit I have been lucky enough to recieve some absolutely lovely compliments on my fanfiction over the years. It's hard to narrow down a favourite! Having someone draw artwork specifically for a fic, like the lovely @vandrawsing did for 'The Fitzier of It' is pretty incredible and takes some beating. People saying a story has made them laugh, or that they reread it multiple times, or that they thought about it in their daily life, is always an amazing compliment. People finding something raw and emotional to connect with in my stories, which are usually quite silly on the surface but with occaisional hidden depths, is always very gratifying. I like when readers respond to the very sudden tonal shifts I sometimes throw in. Really, any time a reader wants to talk to me at all about any aspect of something I've written is the best feeling in the world. I am all about the engagement and the discussion. 💕 As you know, Tovarishch. 😘 I cannot even respond to an ask without rambling!
Yes, I skip ahead and write some parts of the story before I have finished other bits. I try not to, but sometimes inspiration just strikes for a later scene or bit of dialogue, and I just have to get it out while the idea is fresh and in the forefront of my mind. Then it can be hard to go back and fill in the gaps if I don't have any specific ideas for them. My ideal writing state is when my head is so full of ideas that I just continuously handwrite 10,000 words without realising it and can't seem to get the words down fast enough, as happens from time to time.
Domestic fluff headcanons for Valoris... Hhmmmm... 🤔 As you know, Comrade, I am usually all about the Valoris smut, so that is indeed an intriguing question...
I like the idea of Boris drying Valery's red hair with a towel after he's gotten out of the bath or shower. Don't know why, just like it. I like the idea of Boris snatching the perma-cigarette out of the corner of Valery's mouth in order to put some aspirin or some water in there, then slipping the still-lit cigarette back in afterwards as Valery continues feverishly working on something at the kitchen table. I generally love the idea of Boris's aggressive care-giving, as we have talked about so many times before, that seems so true to his character in the show. I guess I headcanon Boris being very handy around the place, taking on both traditionally masculine and traditionally feminine household roles, cooking and dishwashing, sewing, dusting, doing little repairs and DIY, generally being a very handy and organised and well-domesticated person who probably would wear an apron of some sort when in the kitchen, all whilst Valery listens to records at loud volumes, chain smokes, writes and marks scientific papers and is generally pretty chaotic at everything apart from watering his plants and feeding his beloved cat. I guess that Boris would wonder at least once a day how Valery ever survived without his presence. I think Boris would secretly love doing these sorts of simple and mundane daily tasks because he had been too busy to do little things like that for himself during most of his career and he finds them oddly satisfying. And Valery would just sort of quietly bask in all the love and care and attention (while pouting and pretending to be annoyed by it). Like one of his plants, he would grow towards the sun (Boris).
This is more of a plot bunny than a headcanon, but in the early days of my Valoris obsession, I had an idea for a Valoris AU set somewhere peaceful and innocuous in modern day Eastern Europe, that was quite domestic in plot and scope.
Boris's adult daughter was newly divorced and working full time, and Boris was retired so he moved to town so he could babysit her small children for her. He moves into a small bungalow next door to lonely, frumpy, uppity, late-middle aged professor Valery. Boris's grandkids spend most of their time with him, running him ragged.
Valery is extremely put out by these rowdy children who have suddenly appeared next door and are causing so much noise and destruction. One day one of Boris's rambunctious grandkids scrambles through a gap in Valery's garden fence, and right, that's it, Valery's had just about enough of this! He takes the child next door, only for Boris to answer the door with another grandkid in his arms, frantic, wearing shorts, tanned legs wet from the kid's paddling pool, looking dishevelled yet silver and distinguished and like the world's hottest grandad. And Valery is just... Gone. The world's sappiest romcom ensues, and Boris's grandkids are instrumental in bringing Boris and Valery together. 😋☺️😂
Thanks again for the ask, my darling Tovarishch. xXx 🦈.

We drove off the ferry and into the arms of warmth; sunshine and blue skies, revealing our bare white arms to the world for the first time in a while.  The faint mutter of ‘I’m too hot’ ashamedly beginning to leave my lips as I change a very smelly nappy in the confines of our transit in a supermarket carpark. From Belfast we drove west, past both familiar sights and unknown territory, weaving our way into late afternoon, finding a camp-spot and watching the sun disappear, leaving behind a sky full of every shade of orange imaginable. One lone fisherman out on the rocks. We walked, we cooked and we started our evening rituals, the babe falling asleep to the rhythm of the audio book as we all fell into slumber.
The surf forecast gave us a few days to play with, to not be dictated by tides and swell, wind direction and conditions, we fell into the mercy of flat seas and found our spot on a little island, parked up next to the beach with our own natural swimming pool and kelp forest to swim through.  A gully made the perfect swimming start line, protected from the wind by the cliffs.
We’d swim, we’d snorkel and attempt to fish, fruitless, but fun. Walk soggy sand at low tide and wonder about the potential should there be swell.  It was two days of cold wind and sunshine mixed with cloudy stillness and pure glass. We watched people come and go. Walkers, climbers and sea swimmers.  A nod to camaraderie as they passed by.
With time came a change in forecast and that much anticipated swell.  We pushed on, left the gully and the cliffs and the little white sandy beach, a treasure to be told.  The wind blew as we made our way south and the bad weather followed, it was October in Ireland and we’d caught the end of a heat wave, we couldn’t have asked for more.
The first waves of the trip were surfed, a little beach break.  I was hungry, I didn’t need to have a closer inspection, I just needed to get wet and feel the board under my feet and quite honestly, since having Billie, each surf was a test to see if I could even do it anymore, if my muscle memory would hold me up, if my arms were strong enough to pop.  It was tiny but I tucked myself in the corner and found a few little peelers.  I watched from the sea, onto the shore and towards James, Billie and Dillon as they played in the sand, the water spilling over me as I sat on my board feeling the warmth in my belly for all that I have.
An old man sat in a plastic chair, set amongst the rocks just shy of the shoreline, reading. Four others sat on the rocks above, looking out and into the ocean, eating sandwiches, walking poles resting next to them.
By the time I got out of the water, Billie was as she should be, completely covered in sand. We got the trug bucket down from the roof box, filled it with warm water and suds and bathed her sandy skin, sand in all the rolling creases. We listened on as our fellow van dwellers were ‘talked at’ by an eager group of English hikers keen to be acknowledged for their time spent in Switzerland, where the couple were from. Dominating the conversation as the couple sweetly replied, politely answering where there was any room to.  We’d parked the van so the sliding door opened on the other side, it had been a good idea.  As we left, we looked on to say goodbye, the hikers had left but the couples doors were tightly closed.  I didn’t blame them.
We rolled into a concrete beach carpark in the dying light and negotiated the sloped terrain with rock piles, levelling ourselves off as we looked towards our neighbours bright yellow chucks sitting perfectly underneath their tyres.  I maintained that make shift was way better and came with definite satisfaction guaranteed, all this said as I sat with the babe in the warm, dry van as he scouted for rocks on the beach in the cold drizzle, head torch guiding the way. The morning was filled with promise so we ate dinner and got our heads down, sure to be woken by the little girl sleeping on the worktop next to us.  The van was rocked by the wind that night and the carpark toilet door acted like our lullaby with it’s constant banging.
Past the homemade knits and the lady waving in the window, over the fence and across the farmers field, a stone wall guiding us down into a make shift fence and a pile of beach litter; rope, latex gloves, bits of plastic. The cove gifted perfect right handers peeling into a conveyor belt rip, pulling you back out into the line up. No one around.  No other footprints on the beach. That you could be the first ones of the day to walk on that beach or any beach, is worth spending a little bit of time thinking about and feeling thankful for.
We tagged teamed. I watched on as he, ‘the magnet’, caught wave after wave, cruising and turning.  I bobbed along the shoreline with my hot water bottle as she peered over the top and into the direction of her dad.
I wasn’t as lucky.  It was tricky, hard to find the right position, the tide changed and directed the waves differently, I felt weak. I felt sad. I felt disappointed in myself.  I got out and cried.  I just needed a few minutes to pull myself together, to laugh and to remind myself why it is that I surf in the first place.  It was a special place to have a moment like that, sat on the boulders, Dillon bounding towards me.  I promised myself to be kinder.
Our pile of washing had mounted and was spilling out of our bags, we found a DIY laundrette at a garage, possibly the worst and most expensive in all the land.  But it was getting done, no more washing our pants in the stream.  We found where we’d call home for the next few nights and the best house mates you could ask for.  Positioned a stones throw from the water and a lesser distance from a concrete mini ramp.  Chickens and roaming dogs and flat seas (for now).  Diving in, off the natural rock spring board, the water shocked our bodies into a state of alert, feeling alive for the rest of the day.  And then it was a case of waiting, watching, waiting, watching, scrolling on phones until it was time to go.
I sat on the grass overlooking the waves, Dillon by my side and a little girl full of intrigue as she picked the daisies from the grass. The swell bounced off the cliff below and formed together into wedges, waves filling the bay.  Sat on the perfect viewing platform, I watched on, mind surfing and just appreciating where we were.
The swell over the next few days delivered waves for all.  Reefs and river mouths delivering watery treats.  The thing with tag team surfs is the high possibility of surfing completely by yourself.  Daunting at new spots but with the added feeling of accomplishment and adventure, add onto that the high possibility of looking like a complete kook; sitting too deep, too wide, having to gauge position against monuments on the land and really, just a case of trial and error.
Like the swell, emotions come in waves; frustration, excitement, disappointment, satisfaction; post Billie I was becoming friends with all of them with even more intensity.  A deeper satisfaction from just being in the water or just watching from the land juxtaposed with a deeper frustration of starting all over again.
His favourite wave started to turn on and the excitement in his step was like that of a bouncy puppy.  The late afternoon light was magic as it bounced off buildings and with the drop in wind, the energy in the stillness was electrifying.  Dolphins in the line up gifted the cherry on the top, jumping out of the water, frolicking in the waves, sat shoulder to shoulder with those lucky enough to be emerged in the water, and it would be a rare sighting we’d find out later.  I looked on from the shore, babe missing the excitement through her slumber.  The evening felt charged like we’d been gifted something pretty special.
Bad weather changed the course of our trip, we decided to head back up North, to cover ground we had missed through the eagerness to get south. Driving into the dark, burrito in hand we bee lined to a familiar spot and pulled off the road. Stars lined the nights sky, pitch black otherwise, no street lights, just the head lights from the odd car driving past.  Being back in the area reminded me of a trip that came before, three girls sardined in the back of a van, hunting for waves and laughing for three days straight.
As we descended down towards the ocean, the Irish sun shone with as much force as early October can, stone walls cascaded down over hills and into gardens, dividing houses and farm land. The narrow road delivered us onto a bouldery beach, grass crawling towards the sea. Sheep grazing. A wheel barrow, shovel and plastic bags resting against a mound of earth.  Peat rich soil territory.
The offshore breeze blew light, spraying gently off the back of each wave. Our gamble paid off. The swell pulsed and danced with the tide for a couple of hours. Harmonising and producing long walls of water, It was beautiful to watch.
The dogs descended on us, coming from nowhere, a pack of intrepid little fur balls, excited and boisterousness and taking quite the liking to Dillon.  A courageous little puppy jumping in and out of the van, all to the disbelief of Dillon, gazing at me with a look of ‘what the hell is another dog doing in my bed?’  They humped it out.
He glided in from the sea, lost in a time warp of waves, salty and tired.
We’d spend the next couple of nights sheltering from a bad weather front and in the warmth and comfort of an air bnb, bathing in a free standing tub, cooking pies in the oven.
I’d talked quite passionately leading up to the trip about the best pizza I’d ever had last time in Ireland.  We were back in the town and sat in the same restaurant. I could taste the sourdough base and tomato sauce already. Belly rumbling. It was reminiscent of the last time. Pure joy in every bite. I felt relief that it had lived up to expectation for the both of us.  Billie had her first experience of Guinness, mainly just holding the glass and gumming the rim, but to my aunties delight through text messages later, a keen Guinness drinking since the ripe age of five.
The road took us deeper into isolation and beauty, with an undertone of mystery as we reached the port, ruins of a past village scattered in the hills, a jetty stretching out into the water and sea stacks; stacks of rocks disconnected from the land rising up towards the sky.  A bay full of beautiful boulders in all different shapes and sizes, all tones of white through to grey, a monochrome carpet with the shoreline laden with a rich, thick kelp.  White caps out to sea forming like icing on a Christmas cake, whilst the inner bay lay calm, our own private swimming pool. It would be our final camp spot of the trip and it appeared we’d saved the best till last.
The journey from the main road down to the port was long and with only one final destination, combining time of year and it being mid week meant that people were few and far between. Those that made the journey came and went, paying respect to the landscape and intrigue to the fallen village; still, when the sun started to sink, the port became all ours once again.
We stayed two nights, climbing what seemed like unreachable summits with roaring winds streaking our faces with tears, swimming in water as still as glass, biting in temperature and breathing in the beauty of our surroundings; a bay fringed with high cliffs and swirling birds and a wide ocean as far as the eye could see provoking contemplation and reflection.
It was our first van trip with our babe in tow; a beautiful mixture of fun and difficulty, joy and hysteria; a completely different experience than ever before with new life and new demands and personally, I couldn’t wait for the next one.
Thank you Billie. x

Pergola building is on the rise
Tumblr media
Let’s face it, investing in improving your home is always a good idea.  It’s value only increases and you will gain years of enjoyment from any enhancements. Building a pergola in your backyard is one of the most popular upgrades right alongside building a pool.  It’s no wonder home improvements are on the rise according to NPR, U.S. homeowners are on track to spend more than ever this year…”
What Makes Building A Pergola So Special?
Pergola Builders In Miami is like adding an extra room to your home.
In the event of a major storm it’s possible your Wood Pergola Miami may become a projectile.
The size of Modern Pergolas Miami you build has to do with space.
Home Improvement Pergola Building Plans can assist you in constructing a much-needed structure in your backyard to supply shade, cover your hot tub, or simply transform an outdoor space into something unique.
Reason Why People Want Pergolas can vary from basic to difficult, depending on the layout you select, so make sure you comprehend your ability level before beginning. What Should the Ideal Size of the Pergola depend on your requirements, building instructions, tool and material lists, schematics, and images?

Hold My Beer
Pairing: Debbie Ocean/Lou Miller
Rating: Mature
Summary: The Life and Times of the Heist Wives family, chronicled by things attempted after speaking the timeless declaration, “hold my beer” or Five Times Lou Miller said “hold my beer” before doing something spectacular and stupid, and a couple times someone else did.
I owe this ficlet to a conversation I was having earlier with @smashingmagicklovely about
1. how I wanted a full compilation of everything Lou has ever done after saying "hold my beer"
2. How Lou is badass but Soft on the Inside and Debbie is a non-romantic smartass but Soft For Lou.
and 3. how "my womb says yes but my heart says no" essentially sums up my entire attitude toward writing Heist Wives domestic fluff.
This is the fruits of my labor. Thanks Em for drop kicking my muse at ten o'clock at night.
Tagging @casliyn, @louxdebbie, and @oceansnineball because I feel like Dani and Darcy became ‘a thing’ somewhere between the three of them and an onslaught of adorable Instagram AUs.
Lou sprawls across two separate bar stools in Nine Ball’s pub, watching Debbie beat herself at a game of pool. “I got good in prison,” she had explained the first time she creamed Nine Ball.
“You had a pool table in prison?” Nine Ball asks incredulously, blowing a cloud of smoke over the table.
Debbie shakes her head. “Nope. I had a pen and some paper, and once I finished the Greatest Heist of All Time I calculated the angle of every shot in a standard game of pool and invented new scenarios until I ran out of ink.”
Not for the first time tonight, Lou wonders how she got so lucky as to love a woman as clever as Debbie Ocean. She’s not stupid—Deb is lucky as Hell to have Lou covering her ass, but that’s the magic of it. They click like a hairpin and a padlock, picking their way through barriers and unhinging each other as they go.
Lou turns to Amita, who’s perched demurely beside her with a fucking spectacular cosmo. Lou knows—she made Nine Ball show her the recipe. “Hold my beer,” she instructs Amita, sliding it down the counter to her. She steps on her bar stool, swaying as it spins.
“Holy shit,” she hears Debbie murmur, looking up from her one-sided game. “Lou—”
Lou steps onto the bar and weaves through a line of empty drinks until she’s perched on the corner, in front of Debbie. She fishes through her pocket until she finds the ring. She drops to one knee, knocking over a half-empty margarita in the process. She can feel the tequila soaking into the knee of her jeans.
“Debbie Ocean, darling, m’love, my partner in crime, my favorite felon on the planet, I love you from the bottom of twisted criminal heart. Will you marry me?”
2.
They host the wedding reception at Tammy’s, because unlike the warehouse, Tammy’s place has grass and trees and aesthetic value; no to mention it lacked the warehouse’s air of chaos. It also smells of hydrangeas, rather than takeout Chinese food and expensive perfume—which mattered, apparently. At least, Rose and Daphne seemed to think so, and by that point Debbie and Lou took the backseat in planning their own wedding ceremony. They were perfectly content to marry in a courthouse, surrounded by their friends, but apparently that lacked romantic oomph.
(For her part, Lou found the idea of eloping in secret very romantic, but she can’t deny the feel of grass under her bare feet and the tickle of a breeze through her cream-colored suit.)
Lou and Debbie wander from the small party as the sky darkens. Fireflies drift through their vision like tiny lanterns, and gypsy moths swim in their path, clumsily seeking the porch lights. They stroll hand in hand down Tammy’s endless driveway, buzzed on quality alcohol and the undeniable high of their own marriage. Lou lets her eyes wander down Debbie’s figure, striking in an royal blue dress that whispers sprite-like across her skin.
No white, she told Rose, to the designer’s loud protests.
White is the color of a wedding dress.
No, white is the color of ‘purity’ and has too many connotations attached. It’s not even about virginity—I’m a con artist, for fuck’s sake. You’re an amazing designer, and you have my full confidence, but it feels wrong for me to marry Lou in angel-white.
Lou stops before a shiny object on the ground; squinting in the vanishing daylight; she makes out the outline of a child’s Razor scooter. An idea crosses her mind, too quickly for her to refuse it.
“I know that look,” Debbie warns her, eyeing the scooter.
“Hold my beer, darling” Lou says, handing Debbie her drink—not a beer, in fact, but a flute of champagne—and flips the scooter onto its wheels.
“Lou this feel like a bad idea.”
“Nonsense.” She kicks off, barefoot in her wedding suit, and sails down the driveway. She’s done wheelies on her motorbike before; this has to be easier. She jumps once, twice, then lifts up the front tire—and topples over onto Tammy’s lawn in three awkward, lunging steps.
Debbie cackles. “Not quite a motorbike, is it Lou?”
3.
They honeymoon on Daphne Kluger’s private beach, because of course Daphne Kluger owns a private beach, a tiny tropical place sprung from the Caribbean, half a mile long. Perhaps it’s excessive, extravagant, but they’re not complaining when Daphne offers to let them stay in a fucking gorgeous beach house and have the ocean to themselves for two weeks.
“We should crack open one of those coconuts.” Debbie gazes at a hunched palm, shielding her eyes from the sun. Her skin has warmed and bronzed; her mischievous grin is infectious. Lou can’t say no to those soft brown eyes.
“Want me to knock one down?”
Debbie smirks. “If you can,” pretending she doesn’t know Lou will take it as a dare.
Lou looks up at the palm tree, laden with four coconuts. It doesn’t seem particularly difficult to shimmy up, but the tangerine sunset and her fourth drink of the evening has her seeing the world through a pair of rose-tinted, how-hard-can-it-be glasses. She makes up her mind.
“Hold my beer.”
Lou squeezes the tree trunk between her thighs and begins to climb. The bark scrapes her skin; sure she’s only wearing a bikini and a breezy blouse, but the glint in Debbie’s eye promised a lusty reward for her efforts. She hangs from the top of the tree and kicks a coconut. The palm leaves catch her button-up and scratch along her exposed torso. Her efforts pay off—a massive coconut drops to the sand below with a decisive whack. Debbie whoops. Lou shimmies down the trunk and downs the rest of her drink.
When they relay the story at home, Daphne asks how the hell Lou managed to climb a palm tree in a bikini.
“Drunkenly,” she replies, “having forgotten what thigh chafing feels like.”
4.
A car revs outside the window. Lou looks up from the textbook length Swedish instruction set. “Fuck,” she mutters.
“This isn’t happening today,” says Nine Ball, gazing over the sea of bars and screws that could theoretically build a crib.
Lou groans and sips her beer. “Tammy you’ve built one of these. Help us out?”
Tammy shrugs. “They’ve changed the design since Alicia was born. Sorry.” But she’s made more progress than the rest of them, having managed to fit the bottom boards of the crib together into a solid surface.
“You’re a fence; I thought you knew how this shit worked.”
Tammy crossed her arms and got up from the floor, dusting off her jeans. “Yeah, I don’t build the things I fence.”
“Uh-huh,” says Nine Ball. “I always thought you’re one of those… DIY moms.”
“Only on occasion.”
The front door of the warehouse slams shut. “Where the hell is everyone?” Debbie’s voice echoes from the floor below them.
The group of them, somehow sweating and sore from failing to assemble the worlds’ shittiest IKEA crib, emerge from the room. Lou leans over the railing and smiles at her wife, who at six months pregnant (and beyond over it) has managed to carry four-and-a-half people’s worth of Chinese takeout in her arms while balancing an extra-large 7-11 lemonade between her chin and her baby bump and sucks nonchalantly on the bright red straw.
Sight for sore eyes, Lou thinks fondly, because she’s a fucking sap who loves this woman more every day.
She turns to Nine Ball. “Hold my beer,” and swings her leg over the railing. Nine Ball rolls her eyes as Lou slides down the spiral staircase at breakneck speed. She attempts to flourish as she rounds the final bend, but it quickly becomes an emergency crash landing, as she topples spectacularly onto the warehouse floor. With all the confidence of a clumsy woman who’s convinced the world she’s graceful, she dusts herself off and proceeds to trip over the couch, which has apparently moved three feet since last she saw it. She eats it again and finally stands to meet the half-amused eyes of Debbie Ocean.
In lieu of a greeting, she presses a kiss to Debbie’s lips, then to her neck, then to her belly for Creature (as they’ve insisted upon calling it, to everyone else’s chagrin) and then her lips again for good measure.
“I swear to God, Lou, if you die before this kid is born... ”
“Never,” Lou replies. Her hands curiously search Debbie’s midsection for a kick from Creature. “Just a couple of bruises. Although we might want to move the couch back to wherever it was.”
“No one moved it Lou. Your muscle memory isn’t worth shit.”
5.
Before Darcy is born, they take a vacation. Dani stays with Tammy—the “adult friend,” as Debbie so delicately put it when Constance asked why she couldn’t watch their child for a week. They rent a place along the Baja peninsula, a hidden coastal oasis to themselves, complete with a jacuzzi and an underground spring that bubbled into a natural pool. Overlooking the pool, to Debbie’s delight, a cliff perfect for high dives.
“How are you doing?” Debbie emerges from the house sporting a craft beer and an impressive sunburn.
Lou lifts her sunglasses. “Distracted,” she mutters.
“And how is Nessie doing?” Debbie asks, plopping onto the chaise. Her gaze softens, and pulls Lou into a warm kiss, slipping her hand under Lou’s green button-up to where their second daughter grew.
“Playing me like a fucking marimba,” Lou says softly, resting her hand over Debbie’s, over the taut skin of her belly. It’s funny, she can’t help thinking, the undisguised tenderness with which Debbie touches her. When Debbie was pregnant with Dani, she was all tough shell, and the entire nine months had been a stressful road littered with complications and doctor’s appointments and a couple close calls.
No way in Hell am I doing that again, Debbie swore, and quite understandably. Nope, no way, miracle my ass.
Well then I guess it’s my turn, Lou promised and kissed her against their creaking headboard.
Her turn—an unspeakably weird turn, she realized when first the alien creature moved inside her. Curious, the way it’s spoken on black and white British TV—curious. Weirder, perhaps, Lou woke one more to find Debbie softened like honey, curled around the new-to-them curve of her abdomen and smiling the sweetest thing she’d seen in months. Captivated the way she couldn’t be with Dani, and Lou in turn was bewildered by her.
“No shit,” Debbie whispers now, feeling Nessie (a nickname coined by Rose, of course) press against her hand. “You’re on vacation,” she mutters to the errant alien foot. “Relax.”
Lou tosses back her head and laughs. “Your voice only riles her up,” she says, shooing Debbie away with her hand.
“Her or you?” Debbie retorts, voice full of promise. So far, this vacation has rivaled their honeymoon in terms of good food and better sex.
“Both of us.” She pulls Debbie close and kisses her with fervor, pressing her thumb between Debbie’s thighs to elicit a rewarding groan. “God, you know how hot you are,” Debbie growls, her words slurring into something needy and near-impossible to resist. Debbie pinches the sensitive skin of her breast, and she’s wet already, God help her.
Debbie’s lips are running a full-on expedition of her body, tanned legs straddling her and her hand inside Debbie’s swimsuit, when few sharp sucker punches from the baby force her to break away. Debbie grumbles softly and runs her hand through Lou’s sun-bleached hair.
“More later,” Lou murmurs, low and husky, “when Loch Ness quiets down.” She’s gone on this woman, gone on Debbie Ocean forever. They’re conquering the goddamn world every second they spend in the same room. She doesn’t want Debbie more than three feet away, especially not now.
“Fine,” Debbie acquiesces. It’s playful, frustrated all the same. Debbie stands up at the promise of later. Then, her gaze fixes on the waterfall, and her eyes light up. “Hold my beer.” She shoves her drink into Lou’s hand and races to the pool.
“Fuck you, that’s my line!” Lou calls after her.
“Not anymore!” Debbie clambers up the slick rock, hauling herself onto the rock’s edge. She gets a running start, hurling herself into a front flip that from Lou’s vantage point is executed perfectly. Until it isn’t. Debbie hits the water in what can only be described as the most painful belly flop Lou has ever witnessed. She stands stone-still in the pool for a full minute before making her way to the edge.
“Are you alright, baby?” Lou shouts, half-teasing and half dead serious. Because when Debbie emerges from the water, she is the color of cheap boxed wine from her neck to her knees, pinching her stinging midsection with both hands.
“Fuck off,” Debbie mutters, but she’s chuckling through her pout, an indicator that she’s not severely injured herself.
Lou hands her back the bottle, cocking her eyebrow dangerously. “That’s what happens to people who laugh at me for getting stuck in the jacuzzi.”

It is the twelfth anniversary of the Toussaint heist. Tammy, good friend that she is, offers to host the barbecue. She’s just purchased a backyard trampoline that has automatically made her the “most cool aunt” in the eyes of Dani and Darcy, and really, who can protest?
Debbie the grillmaster is flipping burgers, chatting with Daphne Kluger about her latest endeavor in directing, which is generating a fair amount of Oscar buzz. Amita and Constance are teaching Darcy how to steal jewelry off a person’s body without being caught, and what kind of hypocrite would Lou be o protest that it isn’t a useful life skill? Dani, predictably, has climbed onto the trampoline.
Lou’s heart swells as she watches her daughter bound across the elastic surface. “Hey,” she says to Rose, “hold my beer.”
She strides over to the trampoline and climbs on, shoes and all. She takes a couple steps onto the trampoline. “Hi Ma!” Dani cries enthusiastically.
“Hi Darling, are—” Her feet drop from under her. Apparently, the three-inch stiletto heels on her boots were less than ideal for a sheet of kevlar and rubber, because they’ve split two holes in the trampoline, and the woven strips of it are springing up everywhere, and Lou is flat on her ass beneath it.
Dani peers down at her, howling with laughter. “Ma you broke it!”
Lou scooches out from beneath the gaping hole, ass first, with the shreds of her grace and dignity.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Darcy asks her older sister as Dani straps on her helmet and elbow pads.
“Great idea,” says Dani. She fixes her gaze on the massive pipe she’s rolled into the warehouse parking lot. On the other side of the pipe lies a ramp, and on the other side of that, a curb and chain-link fence she’ll just have to steer away from.
Dani mounts the skateboard and tests its wheels. Sturdy, smooth, waxed.
“You only finished it yesterday,” Darcy says skeptically.
“Yeah but it’s, like, the third prototype. This is the perfect board; trust me.” She’d snatched the old parts from junkyards and the back closets of skate shops and finagled them together into a board all her own.
“You have the camera rolling?” she asks, wiggling her board underfoot. Darcy nods.
“Great.” She quickly tames her hair into a top-knot and adjust the knee-pads on her torn jeans.
“Last chance to back down. If Ma sees you hit that ramp, she’ll read you the riot act,” Darcy warns her.
“Pssssh, have you seen the old photos of her on the motorbike? She used to take it to California and do some crazy shit out in the desert.”
“She still does. Doesn’t mean she’s okay with you hitting that ramp on your skateboard. Don’t be a jackass.”
Dani shrugs. “Takes one to know one, sis,” she says with a grin that her sister quickly returns. “Hold my beer.”
Her drink and camera safely in Darcy’s hands, Dani kicks off down the empty lot. She jumps into the pipe, listening to her wheels rumble on the plastic, then gives herself a boost before hitting the ramp. All of a sudden, she’s flying. It’s fucking fantastic. She flips the board once for good measure and lands beautifully, but before she can gloat the chain link fence is upon her.
Right. This is why you don’t put a ramp near a fence. She collides head on, and damn, she thinks, it’s a good thing this fence is pliable. It spits her back out like a catapult, and she lands on her ass on the concrete.
Darcy runs up to her. “Are you alright?” she repeats, taking Dani’s hand and helping her to her feet.
Dani nods shakily. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, that went great for the first trial. Did you catch me eating it on camera?”
