A look at Playwright's design

This was meant to be an analysis but it became so unserious midway. And yes I'm using this whole thing as an excuse to tell everyone that Playwright wears high heels.

Some elaboration (may contain spoilers for IS2) :

1. didn't have any space for it but need to note that he has beauty marks!! two of them.

2. he often draws blood for his blood ink, so he's probably anemic further suggested by his pale complexion and premature gray hair.

3. the gap in his sleeve is probably to make drawing blood easier

4. the low blood volume from frequent blood draws causes low blood pressure. tight clothes help improve blood circulation

5. he covers up most of his body parts, so we can't tell if he has any visible scars or more importantly, oripathy crystal formations. he seems to be infected though, based on the relic descriptions

6. gloves makes it unclear if he has any scars, corns or calluses. someone who writes so often ought to have calluses. it could be that his gloves themselves are to prevent calluses. Personally, I think writing with gloves on is very difficult. props to him for always writing with gloves on

7. Black and white hair. I think this is either indicative of his cat breed, a sign of stress or anemia, a reference to the black cat in Poe's short story Black Cat, or all of the above. You can refer to my previous post to know more about Playwright and the Black Cat.

8. Ribbons. so many ribbons. boy why do you love ribbons so much. the ribbons are mostly blue and black, but there are other colours too. he also ties the longer parts of his hair with them.

Interestingly, having a lot of ribbons is a characteristic shared by Ms Christine, another character related to Phantom. in Ms Christine's case though, it was Phantom who gifted her all the ribbons. Could it be that Phantom also gifted the Playwright all these ribbons? or the other way around?

10. trademark small_ryuzaki's hypnotic eyes. among all small_ryuzaki characters we have, this is the most apparent with Cantabile and Erato. he also has eyebags, implying that he hadn't slept well in a good while.

9. High heels - probably a fancy formal wear, but I like to think otherwise. HC that Playwright wears high heels because he doesn’t want to look short when standing next to Phantom, a towering 185 cm pole. Imagine Rhythm in Literature EP but Playwright is ~15 cm shorter. Wouldn’t it be cute? I love this shortie.

Update: he wears high heels (and so do most other Troupe members other than Blood Diamond) because tragic actors wear buskins

11. Blue quill - The Writer's Tongue, a relic that foreshadowed the Playwright's death. he never lets go of it because he never stops writing. maybe when he finally achieves his vengeance, he'll be able to let go.

12. Blue accent - his design perfectly contrasts Blood Diamond's. I have been thinking, why the Blood Diamond outfit? why not Phantom's default outfit? This may be because the current default Phantom isn't the real Phantom, but rather a shell of who he used to be. To the narrative as a whole, "Phantom"'s character is meaningless without the troupe, so in order to fully grasp his character, you have to look at his identity within the troupe. "Blood Diamond" may be the troupe's puppet, but he's also their star.

There are other significance of the colour blue that I covered in this post.

13. "Tear of the Departed"

this relic that belongs to the dead/retired elite operator shares the same shade of blue, and similar themes to Playwright's: associations with fire and creation, and heroic qualities. I might be jumping the gun, but its an interesting food for thought

14. I actually don’t know anything about cat breed or British shorthair or whatever. He’ll always be a black cat shaped gremlin in my heart.

15. Glasses are really versatile. First, you can have glasses-wearing girls take them off and suddenly become beautiful, or have girls wearing glasses flashing those cute grins, or have girls stealing the protagonist's glasses and putting them on like, "Haha, got your glasses!" That's just way too cute! Also, boys with glasses! I really like when their glasses have that suspicious looking gleam, and it's amazing how it can look really cool or just be a joke. I really like how it can fulfill all those abstract needs. Being able to switch up the styles and colors of glasses based on your mood is a lot of fun too! It's actually so much fun! You have those half rim glasses, or the thick frame glasses, everything! It's like you're enjoying all these kinds of glasses at a buffet. I really want Phantom to try some on or Mouthpiece to try some on to replace his mask. We really need glasses to become a thing in the Crimson Troupe and start giving them away for free. Don't. You. Think. We. Really. Need. To. Officially. Give. Everyone. Glasses?

You could also light a campfire at a spot you associate with her then make some Charred Peppers or Baked Palm Fruits by dropping them into the fire.

Another part of my What-If, Gohan VS Sym Part 3: Resurrection Of C.

During Gohan & Sym's fight, Cell's back, & you can imagine how infuriated he is that his own son isnt evil & isnt avenging him.

A 100% sinister & less crazy Android 21 brought him back. She remembers her husband(Gero), their son(Android 16), Goku wiping out the entire Red Ribbon Army, including their son(yes, I'm borrowing that one TFS bit), and herself(that probably happened too). She wants the vengeance on the whole Son family.

This Cell is both the main timeline one & the future one. 21 went to the remains of Gero's lab & found just a bit of remants of that larva Cell. That wasnt enough, she also found some remains of the Cell Jrs at the remants of the Cell Games arena. Which was enough for a new Cell to form & it happened through 14 years after the Cell Saga. During that time, 21 did research on every fight on Earth since.

So this Cell is part Majin Buu(and Dai Kaioshin), Beerus, Golden Frieza, Goku Black(therefore Zamasu), and a little bit of Broly. 21 improved herself as well, she's part Whis.

Cell remembers everything, and the first person he wants to kill is Gohan. Being part Beerus & Zamasu and Dai Kaioshin, Cell takes on a new name, Almighty Cell. The knowledge of God Ki, the G.o.Ds, the Angels, are all there(I know that G.o.D attire isnt exclusive to one's DNA, but its cool), & not only would he enjoy the God Of Destruction title, he wants to fight & kill every G.o.D.

He starts with Frieza's Golden Form at default, but instead of Gold, Almighty Cell has Emerald & its far stronger than Golden(and Sym's Diamond form). He has one form beyond it & a last ditch effort state. Thanks to Majin Buu, he doesnt need his tail to absorb anymore. But since he used to drink people, he can turn people into alcoholic drinks instead of snacks, and drinks from a wine glass. His appearance is less bug-ish, and more like Saiyans & Frieza.

Similar to their last fight, Cell knows Gohan's power is even greater & he wont hold back. But Cell wants force out something else. He then crosses a line no one has done to Gohan personally....

Elasticity - Seemingly looking like an old-fashioned cartoon, Spinel's attack patterns and movements are akin to it as well. She is extremely elastic and malleable, able to stretch her limbs and torso to great lengths and inflate body parts to strengthen her attacks. She uses this to increase the range of her attacks, able to reach enemies from a distance. She can also coil her extended limbs to form a spring with an inflated fist at the end. She even displayed the ability to become as flat as the ground and slither across it, in an almost semi-liquid like state. She's even able to coil one of her fingers into making a type of horn that activates and deactivates her injector. There appears to be no limit as to how far she can stretch.

Twister Dash: She has the ability, when dashing at Steven, to dash in the style of a twister due to her elasticity and physiology similar to rubber or putty.

Limb Seperation: Spinel is shown to have the ability to separate her limbs. When she does this, she still has control of them and can even make them float.

Photokinesis - Allows her gem to glow in the dark similar to a flashlight

Standard Gem Abilities

Appearance

Spinel has a pink complexion, magenta eyes, a small pointy nose, and magenta hair that is styled into a pair of spiky pigtails. She also has three black lines underneath both of her eyes, reminiscent of running mascara. Her clothing consists of a dark magenta top, puffy pointed hot pink sleeves, puffy magenta shorts, hot pink wrist-length gloves, white stockings and a pair of magenta knee-high pointy boots.

Personality

Spinel is bitter, full of resentment towards Pink Diamond, Steven Universe, and all of their affiliates.

Due to her abandonment by Pink Diamond, Spinel is very mentally unhinged, being prone to spontaneous laughter and outbursts of extreme anger when reminded even indirectly that Pink Diamond forgot about her.

Through the movie and after it’s events she has learned to control herself a bit better. Showing high intelligence about friendships and their complexity she is willing to turn over a new stone with the three Diamonds and others who have chosen to forgive her.

History

Spinel had been made during the time that Pink Pearl had been around. Made as a playmate in order to redirect Pink’s childish attitude and high energy she was to be a toy for the other to release her pent up emotions on and play with when she felt bored.

Often the pink gem would try to play games in order to distract the diamond from her anger or annoyance with the other Diamonds. Playing games all day whenever she could with her Diamond, Spinel couldn’t be happier when she was with Pink Diamond and she had insisted that both of them would be together forever.

Things changed after ‘The Accident’ with Pink’s Pearl.

Pink started to become a bit more distant and insist more often about being a “real Diamond” as she would say. Wanting her own colony and taking on more responsibility that the Diamonds would give her. Whether that had the Diamond going out of the garden more in order to do what she must to prove herself to the other Diamonds; Pink’s presence soon became more and more scarce.

Then Pink was finally given her colony Earth she abandoned Spinel at the Garden built for them, telling her they were going to play a new game which involved Spinel standing perfectly still. Spinel was eager to play the game and stood motionless for 6,000 years while waiting for Pink's return and thus throughout the whole series.

Steven Universe: The Movie

After 6,000 years of waiting Spinel finally had gotten news on what became of her Diamond. She learns that Pink Diamond technically no longer exists and had given up her physical form to give birth to her half-human son Steven. After learning this and also realizing the fact that her Diamond abandoned her, she changed her appearance and swore vengeance on Steven and Pink's "other friends".

pinel arrives in Beach City on a massive customized Injector with which she begins filling the planet with poison. Spinel begins to fight against Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, her stretching ability and chaotic method of movement allowing her to easily defeat them with her Gem Rejuvenator. Furious, Steven manages to grab hold of her weapon and poofs Spinel with it as well.

Eventually, after being Rejuvinated by her own weapon she ends up going back to Pink Diamond's Garden, where she tells Steven the story of her past as well as her abandonment through "Drift Away", causing her to return to her former self. Steven, feeling bad for Spinel, befriends her and brings her back to the Gems and Connie, who, after initially being wary, agree to let Spinel help Steven in deactivating the Injector.

Upon deactivating it, Spinel is once again hurt by Steven's reaction. She then claims that he only needed her for the Injector, and did not want to be her friend and that he would just get rid of her, the source of his problems. Thinking he will betray her as his mother did, she pushes Steven, making him drop the Rejuvenator. Freaking out in anger and betrayal, paranoid that Steven would send her back to her default, she resorts back to her old behavior and attacks Steven, taking Garnet as a hostage to goad him into fighting back. This, however, causes Garnet to regain her memories as well. After being beaten by the Crystal Gems, Spinel then retreats to the top of the Injector and is soon followed by Steven, who once more tries to reason with her. This further infuriates her, causing them to fight, until it becomes apparent she has lost her motivation to destroy him and regrets her actions up until that point. Steven, now fully reunited with his powers, comforts her and claims she can start fresh with new people to be her friends. The Injector then explodes due to the battle, and Steven saves Spinel by entrapping her in his bubble alongside him. Steven then attempts to comfort her again, as Spinel decides she has created too much damage and must leave. The Diamonds then arrive, ready to confront Steven about where they will live and Steven introduces Spinel to them, thus giving her the new friends he promised. Spinel then says goodbye to Steven and leaves Earth alongside the Diamonds, happy to be loved again.

Present

Spinel, not wanting to feel trapped again, spoke with the Diamonds in order to allow her to travel between Earth and Homeworld so long as she comes back once she is finished or doesn’t stay too long away from the Palace. The pink gem often finds herself traveling around Earth and trying her best to learn about friendship and what it really means to be a “friend”.

Something I’ve had in my head for awhile but just realized I’d never done a headcanon on: Nick’s professional boundaries. Namely, what types of jobs he’ll take, and which ones he won’t on principle. 

The bottom line for Nick is this: he’s a detective, not a bounty hunter, and certainly not a hitman. His job may at times include tracking down people who have done wrong, and at times he may need to kill them, but in order for him to consent to this it can’t be the primary aim of the job. A good example would be his New Vegas verse: he’s eligible to become a companion in tracking down Benny, but he won’t do it if the Courier’s only goal is to kill him - Couriers who already have good karma won’t have this requirement, but neutral Couriers will probably have to pass a low-level speech check to convince him that it’s the Platinum Chip they want back, not just vengeance. When it becomes clear that a hit is going to be carried out on Benny, Nick is most likely to stay if he’s already seen how deeply this could change Vegas politics, and if the Courier has been helping people and changing things for the better.

Generally, Nick is willing to take the following kinds of jobs:

Kidnappings and runaways, obviously. 

Deadbeats and debt collection. He isn’t a hired thug, and won’t strong-arm anybody for money, but if a spouse abandons their family and takes their shared savings with them, or if someone defaults on a large debt, he’ll at least track down the culprit and bring back the location, and if he can verbally persuade the offender to cough up the cash, he will. He will only allow this to come to violence if the offender is a complete monster - say, in the case of the deadbeat spouse, if they were an abuser. 

Stolen property. There’s a reason he’s very aware that anything that isn’t nailed down blows through Goodneighbor eventually. 

Homicide investigation. This is one of the few job types that Nick goes into prepared to potentially have to shoot someone. An important distinction is that he’s trying to solve the crime and bring closure to the loved ones of the deceased, not specifically going out of his way to murder the murderer. He would, for example, have preferred that Doc Crocker go in Diamond City’s prison, despite what he did to Earl Sterling and likely others. He will make exceptions for people like Pickman, who are obviously completely without empathy and ready and willing to kill again. 

Miscellaneous “finding” jobs: this is rarer, but he’s willing to track down Pre-War relics and similar when asked. He even finds these jobs appealing, because there’s a challenge in putting together the pieces of a mystery that’s over 200 years old. People will almost always pay full price for these jobs, though, since the client is usually a wealthy collector.

But the most important part is the kind of jobs Nick won’t do, which comes down to a pretty simple principle: if he’s going after someone with the possibility of doing them harm, there has to be a higher and more righteous motive than simple revenge. Obviously this makes him a tad hypocritical, given his fixation on Eddie Winter, but the practical motivation behind the principle is that he can’t afford to become known as the synth you hire to assassinate people. He’s on thin ice already, and being the synth who finds people rather than making them disappear is a big part of what keeps his head above water at any given time.

Diamond Is Not Catch Prologue: A Night to Remember Part 1

Tick.Tock.Tick.Tock.

Twinleaf town might just be the quietest, most superfluous town I’ve ever been to. Doesn’t say much given that I’ve lived here all my life, but on nights like these I can’t pretend to be too charitable. Even as my eyelids effortlessly droop I shift around on the edge of the furnace and the refrigerator. Eventually my fatigue-riddled form decides it doesn’t care any more and I dip into the Lethe.

Bzzt-TING! Bzzzt-TING-TING!

And just like that two hours of concerted effort went up in static. I reach for my phone with a groan, flipping it open to find a text message from my next door neighbor and best friend by default, Barry. Bzzt-TING! Bzzt-TING-TI~

Make that two.

“seph, pokemon journey, lake verity usual late fee. leaving now”

“mom is angry, five minutes to talk her down meet at your place”.

Reply?

“Knock First, I’ll be ready in three.”

Mere seconds from hitting the big green button I stopped short.

“Knock Text me first, I’ll be ready in three.”

I slump out of my Gulpin themed pajamas (yes, complete with hood and yellow feather, die jealous about it) and throw on my Bagon hoodie with dark blue sweatpants. My hair’s a mess and I probably smell awful but it’s almost midnight and everything is terrible so why not. 

Even after my miraculous transformation from sleepy garbage to lethargic adventure garbage I haven’t heard back from Barry. Mrs. Grove must be pissed. While I wait I click on the TV, immediately muted with close captioning. I know they’re probably fake, but the Sinnoh Nature Featurettes on shiny Pokemon are pretty fascinating, and this Red Gyarados entry is pretty neat. The clear image of a man with loud red hair and a compensation cape blur out for a moment, the letters at the bottom of the screen glitching into black and white squares before the TV blinks out on me. Shit. 

I furiously spam the power button on the remote with a wing and a prayer, and it works! Well, sort of. The SNF is still gone, but a grainy image of an old woman in a rocking chair blinks into view. The captions are in plain view at the bottom, but the television speakers murmur out a biting breeze. Hammering the mute button does literally nothing, but when the old woman finally addresses the camera.

“Good Evening Dearie, what are you doing up so late”

Creepy.

“Can’t sleep? That’s perfectly natural at your age.” Okay, that’s enough, get me off this ride. The power button must have finally wanted vengeance for my rough handling, the television refused to shut off.

“Come now, Persephone, you don’t want to miss out on this.”

The Creepy Old Woman Who Knew My Name tm snapped her fingers and a table materialized before her. She slapped the table and three tarot cards appeared before her. Another slap later and the tarot triangle flipped over, revealing an abra holding two spoons, a dizzy Exeggutor, and a Drifblim carrying a gaggle of children. That didn’t look good.

“Magician,Tower, Death. Rash action, calamity and change are all in your future Dearie. I pray that you know what to do”
