Amarok
The Amarok is a unique assault 'Mech among the Clan Wolf touman, intended as a close combat 'Mech. It was built and conceived under Ramiel Bekker's idea of combating the Death From Above (or DFA for short) tactics being employed by Clan Jade Falcon. However, lacking time, he had to seek assistance from Clan Sea Fox, as he did with the Stormwolf. It was during his time with Clan Sea Fox that he started to investigate the Hammerhead, a new Sea Fox 'Mech, and from that 'Mech he borrowed design choices that would later be a part of the Amarok — for example, the use of Hardened Armor for better protection and modified hand actuators for use in close combat.
With the Amarok being focused on combating DFA tactics, a program was initially installed which was intended to assist with dealing with such an attack. The main idea was taken from both data collection on Solaris VII and the layout of the Hammerhead, in order to make a program that would force the 'Mech to lock its arms above the cockpit. This ultimately failed, and pilots of the 'Mech would soon disable this program, it eventually being omitted in further production runs.
The primary model carries all of its weapons in the torso, while the other variants have their weapons in the head and arms. It is equipped with twenty and a half tons of Hardened Armor for better protection and a Supercharger to increase the speed of the 'Mech. The main long-range weapon is an ER PPC with a PPC Capacitor in the right torso for fighting off incoming 'Mechs intending to carry out a DFA attack, backed up by a rotary AC/5 in the left torso and a large pulse laser in the center torso. Finally, the 'Mech carries two Streak SRM-6s in the right torso for engaging targets at close range.

Next up: You're a Woman, I'm a Machine - Death From Above 1979
This is an album I have enjoyed since it came out in 2004, but I think I bought this on vinyl in like 2013 when they released The Physical World, dropped the 1979 part of their name, and went on a reunion tour. You're a Woman, I'm a Machine is better than The Physical World. Honestly it's their best album, and while the reunion tour was fun and I did see them live, I heard some news about Proud Boys associations of one of the members around that time and I kind of wrote them off. Anyway Jesse Keeler says that's not true, he's just a guy who is the regular amount of angry and likes playing guitar, and who gave his friend the benefit of the doubt while he went down a far-right rabbit hole, or something. Regardless, it is a record I own, so I am going to listen to it.
I mean early 2000s hardcore is very much the genre for angry white men, and definitely some of the lyrics on other albums are misogynistic as fuck (looking at you, dead womb), but on You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, most of the tracks are about wanting to go on dates and have sex with pretty women in what seems to be a consensual and socially accepted for pop music sort of way, or they're standard angry heartbreak songs. So do with that info what you will. Apparently they've reinvented themselves (again), and put the 1979 back; no word on if they're still friends with Proud Boys.
If you don't know DFA (1979 optional?), they're a good introduction to hardcore without being too hardcore. A similar smashing guitar riff style to Dillinger Escape Plan or The Blood Brothers, who were also big hardcore hits at the time, but a lot less screamy and more pop-punky and catchy.
Favourite Track: Black History Month, but actually the Girl on Girl remix of it ft. Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett, another staple of Canadian indie) is my obscure deep cut into early 2000s indie rock. I had to dig out my old iPod video to remember the name of this remix. Maybe listening to everything on that can be my next project. (spoilers: it's a lot of Canadian indie rock, and also the Misfits' discography for some reason).
Least Favourite Track: Little Girl. It's about coveting your bro's girlfriend, I guess? The riff is boring.

It’s been a shit year, but this is a solid record. If you don’t like it, fuck you.

Is 4 Lovers, Death From Above 1979 (2021)
How on earth am I supposed to review an album where so much of it is horribly compressed, all of it is very danceable; where some parts remind me of bad Muse and others of the Strokes let loose – and there are even flickers of Lightning Bolt-esque noise duo genius? I love what DFA have moved towards on Is 4 Lovers but hate the way it’s been presented. Pushing dance-punk in all the right directions – but making it sound worse with the kind of sanitised, heavily restrictive production you’d get on an Imagine Dragons record.
Pick: ‘One + One’
