Which DC museums would the Anubis kids visit?

I’m originally from the DC area, and there are a lot of museums around here of all different kinds, many of which I have been to multiple times. So, I figured I’d put my expertise to good use and do a little exercise: which DC museum would the Anubis kids go to on a hypothetical DC outing? Most of these are part of the Smithsonian institution, and a few are not. These are all specifically museums or part of the Smithsonian, so no memorials like the Lincoln Memorial or Washington Monument or anything. Some of these hypothetical scenarios are gonna send them out in pairs, and some will be solo.

Nina & Fabian - They, of course, go to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. They’re big big nerds, and they’re gonna spend the whole time in the Egypt and ancient history sections. They also might take secondary trips to the National Archives Museum and Library of Congress.

KT - National Gallery of Art. The art gallery actually has 2 buildings, east and west; it’s massive and it’s really cool. Known photographer and probable art freak KT would absolutely love it in there. You’d have to find her and drag her out when it’s time to leave. Mara - Mara would love the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. This is definitely the most science-related museum in the city. It’s big, sciency, and technical, which Mara would enjoy. She loves learning about even the most minute technical detail, and she absolutely exhausts her tour guide with all her questions. [Side note: there are actually two air and space museums around here. And while this one is awesome, the one 30 minutes away in Chantilly, VA is much bigger and much better, trust me]

Mick & Willow - I’m sending them to the Smithsonian National Zoo. Yeah, that’s a bit of an odd pair, and they never actually interacted, but I believe they would have been friends if they’d overlapped. Either way, neither of them have the patience or interest for a classic museum, and the zoo is part of the Smithsonian, so I’d send them there, they’d have a GREAT time running wild at the zoo. Mick loves the lions and tigers, and Willow loves the bird house and the small mammal house. And both of them are absolutely delighted to no end by the pandas. [Side note: Yes, they are ADORABLE. I once watched them do somersaults down the hill in their enclosure. Best zoo trip ever]. They both leave with animal hats from the gift shop.

Joy - Joy is going to Madame Tussauds Washington DC. She wants to have a good time, and she’s here to see wax statues of celebrities. She could spend all day in there. Mara tries to tell her it’s not a real museum but she ignores her. She’s not interested in the hall of US presidents but they’ve got Zac Efron and Beyonce in there and that’s what she’s here for.

Alfie - International Spy Museum. I mean, what else is there to say about that? Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. I considered sending Alfie to the zoo or the natural history museum to check out the dinosaurs, but my man loves ninjas (which I believe are featured in the spy museum!) and all the spy stuff would just delight him. They try to make the entire experience a little immersive, like YOU are the spy on the mission. Alfie finds everything in there super cool.

Jerome - Jerome doesn’t actually go into a proper museum, he goes to the Sculpture Garden, and there’s a specific reason. Now, I’d like to preface this by saying I LOVE the sculpture garden, I think it’s beautiful. It’s an extension of the National Gallery of Art; it’s basically an outdoor exhibition/garden featuring large art pieces. My favorite is this bad boy. You can walk around and look at everything or you can just chill in the gardens. The sculpture garden also features an outdoor ice rink, a cafe, and a fairly large fountain, and a lot of people loiter and chill around here. Now, why does Jerome go to the sculpture garden? Does he go to look at the art? No, absolutely not. He goes to set up camp and try to scam people. He thinks in the big city he can fool tourists and sell fake stuff and run scams to make a quick buck. (Oh, Jerome, you are a tourist, and the DC scammers AND locals would eat you alive). It goes well for awhile but eventually he gets chased out by security.

Eddie & Patricia - Eddie drags Patricia to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History so he can boast and gloat about America. It's fun for awhile, but eventually they get bored of it and start horsing around, and they get kicked out of the museum. Later they join Alfie at the spy museum.

Amber - She would go to the Newseum. Now, the Newseum was AWESOME, I friggin loved the Newseum, I went there so many times. It was dedicated to journalism and news and communication and all that stuff. But why would Amber want to go there? Let me tell you. This was an interactive museum, and on one of the floors was an entire interactive newsroom with cameras and screens and everything where you could pretend to be an anchor or reporter or even a weatherperson and you could do a little fake news report in front of a greenscreen, and if you wanted you could buy the footage and take it home. This is where Amber would spend all of her time. She’d love the attention and seeing herself onscreen and trying to be a star. However, I say “was” because the Newseum closed in 2019 and isn’t there anymore, which is a fucking TRAGEDY. So, she can’t go there. She’d probably settle for tagging along with Nina and Fabian to the natural history museum. She spends the whole time in the gems exhibit. Absolutely enamored by the Hope Diamond and Nina and Fabian have to convince her not to steal it because she will absolutely be cursed if she does.

The team was rough and there was plenty of head butting (Mostly between Stargirl and Robin/Damian as one is almost the unanimous leader while the other thinks he should be) but they were getting there. They were more of a clean up crew for the Justice League, they did more than the "kiddie missions" that the Outsiders didn't do, and they meant more than the PR grab that was the International team. Though they didn't seem to amount to more than that. They still did their best, pushing past the silent ridicule, as they went about their missions.

This may be why tempers were so high that day.

One day, outside a little city by the name of Weller's Point, the prisoner transport for the villain Plasmus had an "accident". Released and awakened the creature went on a rampage, heading ever closer to the populated area. Luckily, the mentor of the New Teen Titans could teleport. The new team did fairly well in the fight, though they did struggle a bit as Plasmus was not a being where simple brute force would work. It made the fight tricky and more than a bit... messy.

Messy enough that juvenile and emotionally compromised Mary Marvel lashed out against the downed villain but was stopped by her teammates... things escalated from there. Restraint turned blows and the whole team struggled to stop their powerhouse without hurting her. The ones who do the best are Raven, Stargirl, Blue Beetle, and oddly Static.

While both of the former could use their abilities to restrain her to a very effective degree Static was actively draining her of strength, or at least of the electic aura she was radiating and blasting with. Frustrated, done with the situation, and a bit petty Mary launched her largest attack yet by saying her magical word.

SHAZAM.

Virgil did what he did best, he handled that lightning as it came crashing down towards Mary and the Titans restraining her. Well, he tried. The bolt was just too powerful, too unlike anything he had ever encountered. He could not handle it and it was dissipating, if anything it clung to him or tried to jump towards the girl. He had to get rid of it and he had to get rid of it quickly, safely too if he could help it.

He shoved it into the ground, into the power lines. He did it as carefully as he could, trying to prevent overload or flashover as guided the charge into the power grid.

What happened next was a combination of a few things. 1. The Mystic and transformative properties of the Lightning, 2. It is effectively being filtered through a bang baby, 3. The kryptonite power plant owned by, provided by, and operated by Lexcorp.

This interaction, this new charge, cycling through the power grid interacted strangely with a number of devices but none more so than PlayStation 4s and the devices connected to them. This new electricity changed things, literally. It brought fantasy into reality.

Whatever game was loaded into became a part of our reality in a small way. Sometimes TVs, Controllers, and even the system changed to reflect items from the game but the bigger change came with the Players. If a person was playing their console during the surge then they would become a metahuman with abilities based on the playable character they were playing.

The city, the county even, was now flooded by an abundance of metahumans and items of varying power of devastation. Static felt horrible.

He couldn't help but compare what has happened here to what happened in Dakota City but on a wider scale. And this time it was his fault. His sense of responsibility wouldn't, couldn't, let that stand. He had to fix his mistake and his team was dragged along for the ride.

The story to follow is a mix of Final Crisis and Kingdom Come with a bit of the Young Justice cartoon in events and themes, a few twists and likely a bit lighter in tone but to the DC geeks this should give a rough idea… Maybe a bit of Marvel's Civil War but hopefully not the rushed knee-jerk mess that that ended up being.

But it's here that I start having issues with my planning. One part in worry as outside the set up we start to follow the perspective of OCs (something rarely smiled upon) and another part in wondering which OC to focus on.

Now, one thing I love in fiction is progressive powers and the conflict escalating from the different paths people take in said progression. In that vein, I have a pair of protags in mind as well.

The main two/co-protagonists:

The Lawkeeper- a cop before the change and now a member of a task force made up largely of those affected by the surge. A gamer, a man of color, and a believer of the spirit of the law. He doesn't always get along with his fellow officers but he believes in what the blue does. He believes that an organized response is what is best.

His abilities are based on those of Jesse Fades of Control. Meaning he has tremendous psychic potential but he needs 3 things to reach his full potential.

1.Items to bond to so he can generate these psychic abilities. Jesse's used altered items of her universe to get thematic abilities from them (ex: a safe to generate a shield, a carousel horse for a dash ability, ect). Here he can use items generated by the surge.

2. A patron/partner entity to help guide, give insights, and empower. It also let's the user enforce reality, basically becoming an anti reality warper.

3. A bonded morph weapon or a weapon to come to his hand when called.

The knight- a recent college graduate who instantly decided to go the route of the caped hero. She, after figuring out how to get her powers to work, instantly went the route of a caped crusader. Going out to the streets, saving lives, stopping instances of surge item abuse, and (in the humble opinion of the local Police Department) getting in the way of operations. In her opinion they were taking too long to get things done.

Her abilities are based on those of Prince Noctis of Final Fantasy XV. This means she has tremendous physical and magical potential but like the above she has a number of check marks needed to gain access to the character's full power.

1. A gem/crystal to draw power from.

2. 13 magical weapons to boost strength. The generated game weapons will do and I have most picked out in a way that likely would help the plot progress.

3. The blessing of 5-6 gods.

4. A power ring of some king to channel all this power.

I keep debating the two above as I do like the idea of both of them climbing in power and clashing over conflicting ideals of what to do with their power. At the same time, I think that just smooshing aspects of both into one (which is actually where they started, a single character) and play off the different ideologies of how best to help people from within her friend group and precinct along with internal conflict. Maybe have the one be a fellow officer they butt heads with because of the... precarious nature

Another OC I was thinking on, keeping with the theme of what to do when you have power, is a thief who played Persona 5. Like both of the above they would be crippled in their ability to use their abilities without a way to fake the connection to. In this case, without the Mementos App, they would need an item that could affect or enter the hearts of others. Luckily, more unlucky really, there are plenty of items floating around that can do just that. Namely Keyblades.

Most other Players are an odd mix but most are variations of the Shooter build. Peak physical humans who heal quickly and often have bullet time. But there are enough other variations to cause trouble. Demigods of unreal strength, men and women who can easily tap into a patron for powers from the outside, 2 variations of spider powers, cat eyed men and women who can cast magic with simple gestures, and so much more. But the real issue was the first two, the demigods without a parent to protect them and those easily connected to a divine source.

The disembodied New Gods of Apocalypse were very happy with those groups. For how bad this can be please look at what happened to Mary Marvel in canon Final Crisis.

Sisiutl

[The Sisiutl is a common symbolic monster in Pacific Northwest art, with the Kwakwakaʼwakw version being the best described online. It’s also one of the few First Nations monsters to appear in D&D. The Stormwrack version has a petrifying gaze, but I stripped that out to make it a little less TPK-able, given its pretty good melee capacity. I replaced that with flesh to stone, so it can still petrify foes, albeit one at a time, and arrow-themed abilities, which are more in keeping with what lore I could find.]

Sisiutl CR 10 LN Outsider (native) This creature resembles a massive serpent with three faces, two each at the ends of long necks, and a more human-like face in the middle where the necks meet. Its scales are like flakes of stone.

A sisiutl is a creature that bridges the boundaries between the Material and Outer Planes. It is a wise councilor and fearsome guardian, and serves to protect and mediate interactions between mortals and extraplanar outsiders. They are usually found near portals between planes, places where planar boundaries are thin, or even as advisors and guides to shamans and spiritual leaders of all kinds. Sisiutls are somewhat stern and no-nonsense, but they have a fondness for cooked meats and other gifts that are difficult to make or obtain without hands.

In combat, a sisiutl prefers non-lethal measures, petrifying a single foe and then negotiating with its allies to restore it to flesh in exchange for meeting the sisiutl’s wishes (which are typically to withdraw the trespass). They are skilled at melee and ranged combat, however, mixing powerful bites and constriction attacks with scales flicked from the ends of their tail like arrows. They can even enhance a scale such that it acts as a deadly weapon against a specific type of creature. If they are mollified or allied with, a sisiutl may give up this scale willingly as a reward, although they choose the type of creature it is attuned to. Common types include animals for assistance with hunting, or a creature type that matches a local menace to the community’s stability.

A sisiutl can speak through all three of its heads, and may carry on multiple conversations simultaneously in different languages with ease. All three heads have the same personality and goals, however.

It may carry four passengers in this form, and moves on its own at its normal Swim speed. It uses its Swim modifier instead of Profession (sailor) to navigate hazards. In this form, it can use its spell-like abilities, but not its natural weapons. A sisiutl may remain in canoe form for as long as it wishes, and return to its normal form as a standard action. Slaying Arrow Scale (Su) Once per day as a swift action, a sisiutl can declare one of its arrow scales to act as a slaying arrow against a creature type of its choice (Fort DC 20 negates). It can then fire that scale as an arrow scale, or bequeath it to another creature. If given to another creature, it can be lashed onto an arrow with a successful DC 15 Craft (bowyer or fletcher) check, and its magic lasts for 1 week before fading.

Some more worldbuilding...

After explaining how the planes work in my last post, I wanted to do a write-up of the Gods in my homebrew setting Asterion. I’ve also included a sample of how I’ve gone about designing individual religions for one of the gods :)

ETHRYS' PANTHEON (THE OLD GODS)

Sovereign of the Gods/Justice/Time - Ionid

God of the Earth - Gelion

Goddess of the Skies - Cielara

God/dess of Death/Fate - Onthys

Goddess of Light/Life/Civilization - Elowen

The original pantheon of Gods created by Ethrys was made up of five individuals: Ionid, Gelion, Cielara, Onthys, and Elowen. These gods presided over the most fundamental aspects of space and time. Of the five, Ionid was elected the Sovereign of the Gods as they oversaw the flow of time through the planes and enabled the rest of the Gods to care for their domains.

In between the time of Ethrys' Sealing and the creation of the Astral Plane, Elowen and Onthys walked among the planes, sewing the rips and tears of reality back together where they found them. From these spots of condensed, healed chaos, the first humans, elves, dwarves, and other beings came into existence. Elowen loved these new beings dearly, and worked with Gelion and Cielara to make the planes beautiful for them to enjoy. When Gelion saw the beings, his tears of joy and delight splashed down and created the first oceans. Cielara created the sun and the moon so that the new beings would always be able to behold the glorious domains of the Gods. Elowen poured her sparks of light and life into the new creations, giving them the ability to create and think and love as the Gods did.

The more beings Elowen created, the more Ionid and Onthys grew concerned about the precarious balance of nature that Ethrys had sealed herself away for. Because of this, Onthys tied their strings of fate to the sparks of Life Cielara had given the new beings, and attached them to their loom. These shining threads became the first Souls. The new beings were then joined into the cycle of life that the other living beings followed, beginning with birth and ending with death, to maintain the balance of existence.

THE NEW GODS

God of Knowledge/Magic - Thaldorn

Goddess of Strength/War - Kivan God of Home/Artisans - Hipoar

Goddess of Luck/Trickery - Tiva

With the creation of living Souls came the creation of new Deities, born from the minds that Elowen gave them. There were dozens of these new Gods created. Just as the Souls were able to adapt and change, these gods partially created themselves, taking on their own aspects and domains. Some only lasted for a generation before they were forgotten and faded away, while others attained powers nearly equal to those of Ethrys' Pantheon. Some of these more powerful gods included Thaldorn, Kivan,  Hipoar, and Tiva. These more powerful gods could encompass multiple aspects and persisted longer than some of the smaller, more specific domain gods. For example, a city's local god and Thaldorn could both preside over Roads, Thaldorn in general and the city's god along their own streets.

There was tension among Ethrys' Pantheon and the New Gods, especially in regards to which group encompassed the truly superior Gods. The Old believed that the New were too unpredictable and unbalanced, and that they should not be seen as parallel in power to the Old as they had not been directly created by Ethrys. The New believed that the Old were denying the innovation and creation that Ethrys had stood for by holding the New below them. This schism was present on the Mortal Planes as well, with each God's followers arguing for their own superiority. Tensions became even worse after the arrival of Oknus' Pantheon and the sacrifice required for the creation of the Astral Plane, which made the Old dependent on their followers for power much like the New.  

Elowen was the first deity to decide that the fighting had gone on long enough, and started to compromise with the New on behalf of the Old in order to unify all the good and neutral aligned deities against Oknus' Pantheon. This unification effort made her a symbol of Civilization among the Souls, as a bridge between the old world and the new. Begrudgingly, the Gods agreed to tentatively put their differences aside in order to focus on protecting their domains against the more important threats from the lower planes.

Religion

Onthys Our Lady the White Wolf,  Our Lord the Black Wolf, The Shepherd of Souls, The Fate Weaver Onthys is one of the original gods created by Ethrys before her Sealing. They were created as a counterpart to Ionid, the Sovereign of Time, as a means to create a direction for the flow of time. They also balanced Elowen, the Goddess of Life, to act as a shepherd for the souls from the Prime Material Plane to the next world.

Depictions of Onthys vary by different cultures, and they are typically presented as a man, a woman, or another non-binary gender according to different accounts. They are referred to by any pronouns. • Domains: Death, Fate, Balance • Clerics: Death, Grave, Life, Twilight, Blood, Unity, Nature

Colors and Symbols Depictions of Onthys typically show them wearing a mask made of a ram skull and carrying a tall black crook. Onthys' holy symbol is a black shepherd's crook inside a white circle. Wolves, dogs, and rams are all sacred animals to them. Unbroken, perfect circles are also considered sacred to Onthys, as well as looms, crooks, and the color black. 

Rituals, Holidays, and Festivals • Veil's Day: This is a holy day when followers will visit cemeteries and gravesites, following the paths in and out as their souls will do someday as they join Onthys' Flock. They typically wear black veils, to represent their eventual separation from the mortal world, and will fast for twenty four hours, beginning at midnight. This holy day occurs on the first full moon of winter. • The Fated Feast: At the end of the harvest season, followers will take three full days to prepare an enormous feast celebrating the renewed cycle of life and death that has allowed them to prosper for another year. If possible, they will weave themselves a new article of clothing. This is also a day of remembrance for the people that passed in the year since the last Fated Feast, and it is believed that Onthys will allow these souls to visit the celebration on this day. 

Tenets • To deny fate is to deny existence and reality. • The designs of fate that guide our lives are a gift from the Gods and an opportunity to learn and grow. • Death is as natural and vital as life -- the undead are an abomination. • If it is fate for someone to be healed, then they will be healed. If it is fate for someone to die, then they will die. Attempts to intercede in our Lord's fated shepherding of souls must be prevented at all costs. 

Temple Clergy and Followers Onthys' most dedicated followers are referred to as her Flock. Local ministries are led by Denmothers and fathers, and the religion is headed by the Grey Wolves. Conversion efforts are not as prominent as in other religions, as Onthys' followers believe that everyone will join the Flock between life and death, but the church will send their followers known as Fatestrings to smaller territories in missionary efforts. The Flock typically gets along well with other followers of the Old Gods, but is hard pressed to trust the New Gods, especially followers of Tiva, the goddess of luck, who they believe disrespect the eternal nature of fate. They are sworn enemies of Oknus' evil Pantheon. 

Artifacts and Sacred Items • The Staff of the Fate Weaver: A black wooden staff shaped like a shepherd's crook, supposedly carved from the first tree that withered in the first winter. It is inlaid with rows of small white diamonds and has a mother-of-pearl grip. This staff adds +1 to a spell caster's DC and has seven charges that are regained at dawn. Casting "Blindness/Deafness" costs one charge, casting "Life Transference" costs two charges, and casting "Circle of Death" costs four charges. • The White Wolf's Circlet: This delicate silver white circlet depicts the head of a wolf with inlaid sapphire eyes. When attuned, the wearer is immune to the fear condition and all fear-based attacks, as well as immune to forced movement effects. 

Sects • The Northern Wolves: This splinter group is located in the far northern continent and believes that Death is the only true God that one can trust. They eschew all forms of healing and medical intervention, instead opting to put all their trust in Onthys' loom of fate to determine if someone lives or dies. They purposefully live in dire, survivalist conditions in order to be as close to their God as possible and will frequently fast for days or weeks on end to prove their devotion. These extremists live on a nearly completely carnivorous diet and will go on Hunts that they see as a form of sacrament. The most fanatical of these have even branched out into humanoids in some cases. • The Butcher Souls: Primarily an underground urban-based sect, these cultists revere Death as the most natural, desirable state of being, and believe it is their duty to return as many Souls to Onthys as possible. Their rituals involve some members drinking poison to bring themselves to the brink of death, while others comb the streets for unlucky passerby that are chosen as sacrifices to Onthys.

The City of New York's COVID-19 Hotel Program provides free hotel stays to eligible New Yorkers who cannot isolate where they live and frontline workers in the healthcare industry who wish to reduce the risk of transmission at home. This will help New York City stop the spread of COVID-19.

Scholastic Learn At Home allows open access to daily learning journeys divided into four grade spans—Pre-K–K, Grades 1–2, Grades 3–5, and Grades 6–9+, covering ELA, STEM, Science, Social Studies, and Social-Emotional Learning.

Resources for artists, freelancers, and gig workers

Rauschenberg Emergency Grant Program provides one-time grants to artists of up to $5,000 for unexpected medical emergencies.

Max’s Emergency Relief & Resource Fund is a one-time grant award of between $500-$1000 ($1,000 when funds are available) to assist artists in all art disciplines who have a steady work history, but who are experiencing a temporary financial set back.  Visit their application here. 

In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the artist community, on March 18 Foundation for Contemporary Arts launched the FCA Emergency Grants COVID-19 Fund. To find out your eligibility, click here.
