Iori and Takeru
Send me two names among the following 12 and I’ll write a short analysis post about them:
Taichi Yagami | Yamato Ishida | Sora Takenouchi | Koushirou Izumi | Mimi Tachikawa | Jyou Kidou | Takeru Takaishi | Hikari Yagami | Daisuke Motomiya | Miyako Inoue | Iori Hida | Ken Ichijouji
Tumblr media
Whether canon provides input on them or not:
Okay, this has been sitting in my queue for a while now, since my brain couldn’t really focus on anything and still somewhat can’t, but I wanted to give this a shot. Digimon Adventure 02 didn’t manage to focus on each and every jogress combination with the same attention distribution, but, obviously, there was still a focus on the relationship between Takeru and Iori. First of all, they’re paralleling each other in quite a few instances - they’re both the youngest members of their respective Chosen Children groups and, due to their more or less visible trauma regarding loss/death, also struggle with their value systems to at least some degree. As I have pointed out before, I haven’t fully watched 02 in quite a while, but I still remember that Iori tried awfully hard to make sense of Takeru’s contradicting behaviour, to get closer to and understand him better. Takeru on the other hand wasn’t projecting as hard onto Iori as he could have technically have, but he still acted very much brotherlike towards him, tried to encourage and cheer him up - while still upholding quite a mask of smiles and (fake) confidence, despite all the wrath and angst he still hasn’t been able to resolve and/or open up to yet (towards the power of darkness, towards his familial issues, the black/white mentality between good and evil, etc.). The closer these two get to their jogress transformation, the more they try to (mutually) support each other. Again, it may not be as deep as it hits you with Daisuke and Ken, but you can still tell that these two care about each other, are both pretty passionate about what they believe in and are thus more similar to each other than what meets the eye. The age difference may have made it a little bit difficult for them to get closer on an even deeper level - but who knows, maybe the 02 movie will show us how these two have progressed throughout all these years.
Whether I think why and how they’d work:
As pointed out in the previous part, the age difference makes it somewhat difficult to estimate how a closer relationship between these two could look like - they do give me quite the brotherly vibes due to how they’re set up and how similar they actually are regarding their moods, even if someone has to look beyond Takeru’s mask of smiles to see that. However, once Iori DOES get through to him, once they’re old enough to be able to face their own demons more openly, I feel like these two definitely could provide emotional shelter for each other. Generally speaking, there are so many things they could potentially bond over, starting over the lack of direct father figures in their lives (even though Hiroaki is certainly not the worst dad out there, he’s just not very present in Takeru’s every-day-life - and both of them have a lot of indirect dad figures among the Chosen Children, ESPECIALLY in Jyou, whom both have a bond with, heck, it’s not even surprising to see how Iori interacted with Yamato quite a few times). Iori actually strikes me as a person who will get in touch with himself a lot more quickly than Takeru, so he might actually end up as the one who’d confront him at some point, asking him to rely on him more and once Takeru realizes that he CAN rely more on others without being considered weak for it - the healing opportunities could be endless.
Takeru would also definitely be among those to watch all of Iori’s kendo tournament (alongside Mimi and Jyou) and they’d absolutely spend study sessions together. Plus, I’d love the idea that Iori would proofread Takeru’s stuff for him later on (Takeru may have asked Hikari and Koushirou before to do that, but both of them were too extensive in their feedback, so while he still asks for their advice, he prefers talking about his ideas with Iori, since he enjoys his calmness about it).
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship:
Again, it’s difficult for me to see either of them in a romantic relationship with each other, given how we only witnessed them as VERY young, even if the age difference wasn’t that big. As outlined above, I do believe that they could be very good and very soft with each other, once they’ve realized that their black/white way of judgment wasn’t the right track (which they already somewhat managed to do throughout 02), so I am actually looking forward to see whether they really remained personally close throughout all these years. Kizuna didn’t give much of an indication, just implied that the whole 02 group spends time together. For now, I can definitely see them as brothers - but I’m not completely ruling out the idea that they could be nice romantic partners for each other as well once they've reached a certain age. Like with many other ships, it’ll depend on how honest they can be with themselves and each other - as jogress partners, the groundwork is definitely there, but they still have a lot of work left to do.

kizuna countdown part 2! yup i just did them all in one go, everyone who’s doing it day by day, have fun! See y’all on Friday!
Favorite Chosen Child-Digimon bond
... uh... so I guess I already answered this in the last question XD I think it's because it's so difficult to think about the Digimon without thinking a lot about the relationship they have with their partners. So I'll just let this one lie, I guess.
Favorite Chosen Children friendship
I pretty much like any relationship dynamic that involves Taichi.
Taichi & Yamato show the most growth, both in themselves and in their appreciation and respect for each other. Taich comes at Yamato expecting to make friends just by being himself as always. Yamato's built up walls to keep himself from getting hurt, plus there's a side to him that wants to be as free Taichi, and he winds up feeling jealous. Then there are ways in which they are legit different which adds even more friction. Their friendship comes out on top because both of them are extremely loyal to their friends at their core. They rock. I loved them in Tri too, when Taichi was acharacteristically waffling around and Yamato was even more concerned about it than the confused viewers hahahaha.
Taichi & Koushirou because they're the opposite of him and Yamato, their friendship is steady and strong throughout. They already respect each other from day one. Taichi puts a lot of faith and trust in Koushirou's abilities and relies on him to get him out of a pickle, even one he's made on his own. Koushirou is a bit shy and not exactly afraid to speak up, but not 100% convinced that his contribution is valued. Taichi helps him see his own worth. And Koushirou believes in Taichi :')
I also love him and Sora and Hikari. For friendships that don't include Taichi, my favs are:
Takeru & Hikari because they're really POWERFUL when they're together (teasing Daisuke for example)
Sora & Koushirou Managing Things, Somehow
Koushirou & Mimi driving each other crazy while really valuing each other
Daisuke & Miyako ^ similar dynamic
Ken & Miyako, I know it becomes a romance, but I loved it when they were kids and it was like Ken and Hikari were off being angsty together and Miyako's like I FEEL LEFT OUT and whines about and then kicks their butts to make the sun shine
Favorite Adventure series villain
Etemon! just kidding. Though the Etemon arc was so great for Taichi that I really enjoy it XD
I'd definitely pick the Dark Masters. Devimon was your typical RPG villain, then Etemon was nonsense run amok. Myotismon was the most fun storyline, what with going back to the human world and the search for the eighth child... I especially loved the chaos when the kids are all separated throughout the city.
But yeah, it'd be the Dark Masters, mostly because I loved how much the kids' resolve got tested when they had to decide for themselves to go to the digital world instead of just being thrown in there. The only one who's had to do that before was Taichi. They fought and they lost a lot of friends, and their team splintered and we saw new sides to everyone. It was harsh. About the villains themselves, MetalSeadramon was whatever, but Puppetmon with his envy and vulnerability and weird relationship with Cherrymon was so interesting to me. Machinedramon was downright terrifying. And then Piedmon playing everyone like marionettes and taking down the trump card as soon as it appeared on the scene... it all led to my favorite moment when the kids are running away one by one and sacrifice themselves to save each other. Sora's moment saving Takeru and Hikari while grabbing Yamato's doll was absolutely epic.
Favorite non-partnered Digimon
Piximon! I loved and wanted more of his training sessions. Wish he'd been like Rafiki and just followed Taichi around smacking him on the head with his stick.
Does Gennai count? He's not a Digimon so I guess not, but I loved Gennai too. He was useful. And also useless. I mostly liked it when he was useless xD
Also Whamon. Traveling in the belly of a whale is awesome. And I was so upset when he got killed.
Also Leomon & Ogremon should count as one of my favorite friendships.
Favorite ship / OTP
So, my number one Digimon OTP is Joumi. Always has been. I like it for a lot of similar reasons that people like Koumi, I guess. But the reason I glued onto Joumi mainly happened in Dark Masters when they were traveling just the two of them for a while. Mimi is positive and outspoken and caring despite being a bit self-absorbed. Jou is reliable, steady, and protective, even though he's also perpetually stressed out. They can both be panicky, but they grow out of it a lot. I think they're pretty realistc in personality and that's one reason I like them together: no one's unusually adept at something or other, they're just kids. They confide in each other about their struggles and they pick each other up. (I loved Ketsui for those moments! Such gifts)
Other ships I really enjoy are Taishiro, Taito, Miyakari, Daiken, Takari, and Daikeru. I also love one-sided Taidai and Mimiyako!
A friendship you'd like to see developed
Honestly? Sora and Miyako. The 02 kids inherited the Adventure team's crests, and each seemed to have a slightly stronger bond with one predecessor than the other. Daisuke had interesting dynamics with both Taichi and Yamato, so that was okay. Iori seemed to have more significant moments with Jou than Koushirou, I think because the sort of knowledge that Iori quests for is a different kind. Miyako is really, really similar to Mimi, her passions are just more hard sciences than artsy-fartsy.  But Miyako really never gets any moments with Sora at all? There's that one when she's panicking about being a Chosen in like episode 2, and I can't think of any after that. I would love to see Sora big sister-ing Mimi, helpig her bring out her sensible side, since Mimi's got the eccentric covered.
I'd ALSO like to see Hikari & Sora have a great friendship. One that isn't entirely based on worrying about Taichi x'D
Favorite Kizuna character profile
Takeru's because I just love that he's in a children's lit club!
Favorite Kizuna promotional art
I... haven't been paying attention, so this isn't a real answer, but that one with the boys eating ramen I guess. I even wrote a ficlet for it lol.
Favorite Tri. installment
Kokuhaku!!!! That destroyed any reservations I still had about Tri. It was epic. Somewhat undercut by the fact that we all knew the Digimon would wind up getting their memories back eventually, but I was okay with just enjoying the ride until we got to that point. It was great. I loved the sacrifice the Digimon were willing to make, I loved the secret farewells each partner took, I loved Takeru's protectiveness, Koushirou's breakdown, and Tentomon's strength. Like seriously, he gets all the MVP awards.
Favorite non-Tri. Adventure movie
Our War Game. It's just classic. Plus, Bolero.
Favorite character besides the 12 kids & their partners
Oh, I guess now I could pick Gennai if I want. But I think I'd pick Meiko. I was so not feeling her when Tri came out because I expected her to be the Typical Anime Movie Newbie, who's almost always a girl, bland and uninteresting, eating up valuable screen time from the characters we actually want to see, magically saves everyone and then never appears again.
Meiko did not end up being that girl. Her shyness and awkwardness might have been annoying if they hadn't been tempered by her personal journey through the six movies, and I ended up really liking having a shy girl on the cast. It was refreshing and it was beautifully cast against Mimi. Mimi/Meiko FTW. And she hd real female relationships - with both Sora and Mimi. Her protectiveness of Meicoomon, but also her selfishness, and the terrible decisions she had to make, the way she struggled with self-pity and real honest grief... it ended up really moving me. I think she became very well-rounded and added a lot to Tri.
If Tri had been just one movie, like those anime movies I was expecting, I think she would have been That Girl, but fortunately with six we had plenty of time to get to know her.
(Bonus) Freebie! Talk about something we didn't cover :)
Well, we did lots of favs, so how about a "least fav"?
Of course I don't have a least favorite Chosen, or Digimon. In fact the only thing I'd really pin as a big disappointment happened in Tri. I love Tri but it's certainly got its holes, and for me, Himekawa Maki is a big one. I hate that we just left her wandering in the dark ocean. I hate that were wasn't more expansion on the original Chosen team. I remember when I was a kid and we found out in the last ep or so of Adventure that there had been kids before Taichi and co, I was annoyed, I'd wanted them to be the first.
But I was also curious. With Tri, we finally found out some about that... but only scraps. Who were the others on the team? Where are they now? What's their relationship with Digimon, and if they don't have one anymore, why? What would they say about Daigo's death and Maki's disappearance? Honestly I didn't want to dedicate more time to them at that point (even with six movies they couldn't cram everything in - much as I love Ketsui, I think it should have been a bit different, and moved the plot along faster). But I also hate that we finally learned some stuff about them and in the end were just left with even more questions.

Ayano is a fairly eccentric but innocent, little girl who just happens to have a number of a bit more outlandish interests as well as a creepy laugh and the tendency to pop out of nowhere. She got heavily bullied in her life already just because many consider her weird and scary.

Bookshelf Briefs 2/16/20
Black Clover, Vol. 19 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – The nature of these volumes is they tend to be between 9-11 chapters no matter what, and while some thought is always given for an appropriate “cliffhanger” (and there’s a good one here), it does sometimes mean that the emotional beat can happen earlier than the author might like. That’s definitely the case here—this book is front-loaded as hell, with the absolute highlight being Noelle reuniting with her family, kicking ass, and her older brother apologizing for the constant abuse he hurled at her. It’s really fantastic. The rest of the book can’t help but feel like an anticlimax, though there is a nice bit at the end where Asta and company make a chaotic entrance to join in the fight. Which isn’t over yet, so next time? – Sean Gaffney
Horimiya, Vol. 13 | By Hero and Daisuke Hagiwara | Yen Press – This manga has too many cast members in it we have to remember, especially given that it only comes out now about once every six months or so. We see Iura dealing with his younger sister, who is having exam worries, and it’s meant to contrast to his “the guy nobody likes” persona at school, but I can’t really retain enough about what he was like for it to really impact. One good thing about this volume is that Hori is relatively behaved, so there’s a lot less of the “wacky” consent issues we saw in prior volumes. When she acts relatively normal, she and Miyamura remind you why we loved this manga in the first place. That said, it really does not appear to be headed towards any specific conclusion. How long will it go on? – Sean Gaffney
Levius/est, Vol. 1 | By Haruhisa Nakata | Viz Media – I probably should have read the Levius omnibus before picking up Levius/est. As far as I can tell, the first volume is mostly a recap of the original series told at an astonishingly breakneck speed. (Levius ended prematurely when Ikki ceased publication; Nakahata essentially had to restart the series in a new magazine, Ultra Jump.) It’s admittedly impressive how much ground Nakata manages to cover in such a short span, but I’m hoping that Levius/est finds a more sustainable and enjoyable pace soon. I want to see the mixed martial arts matches between cyborgs that will either save or destroy the world. I want a chance to actually get to know the characters beyond a surface-level lightning overview of their tragic backstories. I want the worldbuilding to not need to rely on heavy-handed exposition. Right now, Levius/est‘s greatest strength is Nakata’s stylish artwork, but something more would be welcomed. – Ash Brown
Magus of the Library, Vol. 2 | By Mitsu Izumi | Kodansha Comics – Having enjoyed the first volume of Magus of the Library, I was looking forward to the second, even if the series is not always the most subtle of works narratively speaking. But I can’t help but love the underlying message of libraries (reading in generally, really) as a method of gaining knowledge, expanding one’s horizons, and developing empathy for others. At the same time, the work acknowledges the potential harm the written word can cause depending on its use. As a librarian, I can especially appreciate Izumi incorporating real-world social, economic, and political concerns surrounding libraries (fairly accurately, actually, although with simplification) into the fantasy setting of Magus of the Library. Other related areas the second volume of the series specifically addresses include bookselling and bookbinding. The volume also serves as something like a travelogue and introduces new characters destined, I’m sure, to become Theo’s cohorts in training at the Central Library. – Ash Brown
Murcielago, Vol. 13 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – OK, the master swordsman arc did not finish off quite as fast as I’d hoped, but that’s fine, as it gives us a chance to see Kuroko in action some more (and still really struggling, which is cool), as well as Himiko’s dynamic entrance in her car, always a treat. After that’s resolved, we start a sequel arc, as Goldmarie’s body is not lying mouldering in the grave as it should be, but has gone missing. And now there’s a bunch of murders happening in and around the sewers, which gives the artist another chance to lovingly depict a lot of corpses and gore. Murcielago is never going to be children’s entertainment, but it’s a lot of fun provided ultraviolent lesbians are your bag. – Sean Gaffney
My Hero Academia, Vol. 23 | By Kohei Horikoshi | Viz Media – So Izuku has multiple powers now. That said, he’s still having trouble learni8ng about them at all, so has to finish the fight quirkless. Honestly, Uraraka is the MVP of this battle, and there’s some nice ship tease with her and Izuku as my reward. After that, we switch over to the dark side of the cast—it even gets pointed out, with one chapter being called “My Villain Academia,” and a heavier focus on the League of Villains, who are falling on hard times at the moment. Things are not helped by a new, more corporate set of villains trying to get their foot in the door, and the volume ends with a confrontation. This has become one of the biggest Jump series, and it’s well deserved. – Sean Gaffney
My Hero Academia, Vol. 23 | By Kohei Horikoshi | VIZ Media – There is so much going on in this volume. As the battle training with class B comes to a close, Midoriya learns that he will eventually inherit six additional quirks from past wielders of One for All and Shinso gets to use his power to save someone and earns admission into the hero course. Mina gets a couple of badass panels while Uraraka gets several (as well as a rare smile from Aizawa). I love how much Aizawa has taken Shinso under his wing as well as a glimpse and a reference to someone he and Mic knew when they were students, a boy called Shirakumo. We also meet the Meta Liberation Army, who are determined to take down the League of Villains. Todoroki and Bakugo get their provisional hero licenses and we learn a little of Shigaraki’s backstory. Phew! I love this series so much. – Michelle Smith
My Hero Academia: Smash!!, Vol. 3 | By Hirofumi Neda| Viz Media – Again, I like how this gag series is handled. It’s character-based exaggeration, but it also follows the main storyline for the most part, so it can use multiple modes of humor. It’s also not above pointing out its own flaws—when Momo is lacking confidence, Eraserhead tells her to spend a week living with Uraraka, and the latter is quick to point out that “my poverty being of service to you” is offensive. Of course, the series is also not above mocking her love of rich person’s food over and over again, so. We even get a good look at the league of villains here, and they’re just as goofy. This is still a lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
The Quintessential Quintuplets, Vol. 7 | By Negi Haruba | Kodansha Comics – Somehow I missed reviewing the sixth volume of this series, and it’s a shame, as the seventh book is fantastic, possibly the highlight of the series in general. After spending about half of it leading up to the exams, and reminding us what’s at stake, we see the girls taking them one by one, each flashing back to their own issues and challenges—the biggest of which may be Yotsuba’s, as she reveals she’s the one who failed the makeup exam at their old school, and the others left with her in solidarity. The results are brought off perfectly, but Nino is saved for last, and she’s the one who gets the best part, right at the end. Still one of the best romantic comedy manga we’ve seen in some time. – Sean Gaffney
The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 2 | By Kousuke Oono | Viz Media – There’s not really much here in plot or characterization beyond the surface. But when the surface is this, you absolutely don’t care. Househusband is all about style, and in that the book succeeds dramatically. I liked that it featured his wife a bit more in the various chapters, and you can see why he loves her. Everyone keeps mistaking him for doing horrible yakuza deals, even when he’s pushing spices for birthday parties. That said, you really can’t blame them given he’s also pushing his yakuza thoughts into his everyday life, such as the yoga poses, which was absolutely hilarious. We also meet his wife’s family, and their desperate attempts at bonding, which they do after a fashion. This is a whole lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 22 | By Mizuho Kusanagi | VIZ Media – This volume begins with the aftermath of the adventure in Sei, with Lady Riri dealing with the gratitude of her people, which she doesn’t feel she’s earned; Hak reflecting on adolescent memories of Su-Won, whose ability to see the world impartially means he has no special attachment to anyone; and the Four Dragons working to get back a hairpin for Yona that Su-Won gave her. Then we’re off to another adventure in a foreign land. One of the princesses of Xing is sure they’re Kohka’s next target for expansion and proposes war while her younger sister proposes preemptive surrender in order to save lives. Would-be assassins raid the latter’s compound, where there are a couple of badass fighters and lots of kitties. It’s very much a transitional volume, but still quite good. I’m always bummed whenever I run out of Yona to read. = Michelle Smith

smth feels validating abt sugisaki saying that part of dnangel was about trying to be positive even in difficult circumstances or that daisuke was someone doing his best amidst the sense of his own anxiety and loneliness because like... it's there. he is more of a lonely character at heart than he isn't; his massive loser rep is played off for jokes superficially, but anybody taking it seriously can see how daisuke for the most part, despite his 'cuteness,' despite his care, his kindness, or his sincerity, actually... really, legitimately doesn't have very many friends, much less ones that he can speak comfortably and freely with, despite such easygoing confidence and a glowing character being something he's always wished for.
in a lot of official art, daisuke, when he isn't in a sunny light, is within something akin to dark's heart; his own heart, a dim, hungry, and empty place, and you can't really separate that from him. you can't take away the niwa's phantom thief desire, not even from daisuke. even though he has an extremely supportive and loving family, everyone's also constantly focused and bearing down on daisuke for his duty as 'dark,' to the point that daisuke even gets readily stressed out and sick of it- there's a drama cd portion where he storms into his room shouting 'dark, dark, that's all anyone ever talks about! which is comparable to baku's dream-world creating a false daiki and emiko (daisuke's grandfather and mother) based off of daisuke's own legitimate insecurities: they call him worthless and inept as a phantom thief which is enough to bring him to tears, but declaring that he's nothing without dark makes him stop, because for daisuke, who's always been relying on dark, it feels entirely true.
all of this brings anybody to the fact that dark does have a hold on practically the entirety of daisuke's existence. it's his curse and comfort and his secret, the other self that he can't separate from; baku describes both of their existences as a nightmare (and i've talked at length about dark's circumstances before,) but even that nightmare is still one wherein dark and daisuke both need each other. idk how many people can look at daisuke and realize that there really are some massive hollows in his person; his insecurity can run very deep, he's somewhat uncertain and aimless outside of anything that isn't his family 'destiny,' but the matter of the fact is that daisuke, even if he sometimes needs a little outside encouragement, is still someone who can keep bringing himself to step forward and keep moving despite it all. when the going gets rough it's daisuke who stands his ground and asks what he can, or what he should do to start making a difference. the thesis of his (and to a similar extent, dark's,) character has never been raw strength or genius talent or shounen-esque glory and ambition or whatever - it's about someone doing whatever they can in the moment to make things better even when things are turning into a struggle. it's dark deciding for himself that he didn't like the hikari's careless destruction of the arts and deciding to steal them in order to preserve them. it's daisuke deciding for himself that he wouldn't leave hiwatari behind even if there families were at odds with each other.
it's all this!

ignoring manga dark's tragic-romantic dynamic with risa for a sec (yeah i know that flavor^tm is slightly different but i'm talking about rp rn) like anybody can and will still get all of this. possession for dark is mutuality and reciprocation, it's not about being overbearing or domineering (though it can be soooo easily misconstrued and misunderstood as such, like the way riku always does!) but just being there, present and responsible out of what hollow white fog and stark black emptiness he only knows. it's him begging to be relied on, (as he [and daisuke] consistently, impatiently do,) it's him trying to announce his feelings of fealty and the way he's willing to protect and defend what he loves.
possession for dark is an oath; that's what true love and romance is to him. some of this has to do with dark fundamentally being a 'thing' and a live artwork that legitimately wants to be possessed (first by daisuke, second by someone else, which is what unifies him with daisuke in the first place; that longing for & simultaneous expression/avoidant terror of love,) but the rest is his noble (as in royal or 'princely') heart shining through; he only invites what he truly, legitimately loves and is willing to swear his entirety Forever to.
this is also why a lot of muses can so readily fail dark as quickly as they fall for him when/if things start to turn more serious. he can't just claim someone as his, they should try to claim him too. if their own love(general) or acute romantic interest isn't as earnest and deeply loyal, or if his own entirety isn't accepted (as in, if someone doesn't already know the secret of his being daisuke and vice versa or simply refuses it) you can and Will deeply hurt him, even if only unintentionally sometimes.
for all his impenetrable impressions like.... he's still just a guy and frankly as part POTO he has no issues being a little pathetic. for anyone who genuinely cares about him, it's important to actually consider him and his feelings too beyond just being an object of attraction, even if he himself tends to avoid others' cares or worries and dislikes when people manage to guess what he's thinking. it's just healthy love and communication at that point! the world already perpetually demonizes and idolizes him, he might be a celebrity but he does in fact crave something real and true. if you can pass that bar then you're set, he's yours (and you're his.) congratulations
saying this as the one writing them but if you manage to get in good with dark n daisuke then they very much fulfill the possessive fantasy
