Setting Up for Success: Study Tips and Academic Balance in Student Accommodation
Tumblr media
Getting by university life is full of new challenges. Particularly, it is the balance between academic and social life that is hard while living off-campus. Though these are easy-to-follow approaches. Thus, you will build up an impressive setting for your studies, be in a tranquil mood, and attain excellent results both socially and academically.
1. Creating the Best Study Space in Your Student Accommodation
Tumblr media
A. Be Prudent in Selecting Your Space
It is no debating; having a calm and less-distracting place in your room can be a productivity booster. Besides, the National Center for Biotechnology Information reports that students with fixed areas get about 60% of the progress. Habituate yourself in a space with fewer disturbances, either a quiet nook in your room or a library where you can repeatedly study.
B. Make Use of Ergonomics and Proper Lighting
Being at ease is the most important when sitting at a study desk for a long time. Be bold to get an ergonomic chair and desk into it. This condition will be the root of your physical strain and thus be able to pour more attention into your studies. Lighting, on the other hand, plays a vital role. Natural light is one way to promote productivity by 15-20%. That is in contrast with the artificial light used. In conditions with no outdoor shooting, you can go for LED lamps that cast the same kind of light as natural light to avoid eye irritation and exhaustion.
C. Well Construct Your Supplies
Having all your tools closer to you will intercept the hunt time and help you believe that there is no other thing that is more important than the current one. Use storage solutions like shelves, file organizers, and stationary holders to keep material organized. Do not forget to clean it occasionally. A study carried out in 2011 and published in the 'Psychological Science journal scientifically proved that messiness could bring about a 40% reduction in concentration. Ensuring your study area is organized will more than significantly help you to stay on the target path.
D. Set Up a Digital Free Zone
Productivity in your study space can be achieved by banishing all technological devices, such as phones. Sticking to the rule of "just one more minute" when it comes to checking social media can become a problem of serious proportions as students habitually use their phones every 12 minutes, according to a Dscout survey—interspersing with such tools as Focus@Will or Pomodoro Technique apps. These apps help in the regulation of the study breaks so that you are not constantly reaching for your phone. Creating a digital-free zone, or at least restricting screen time, is an effective measure to improve your focus.
2. Balancing Academic and Social Life Off-Campus
Tumblr media
A. Establish a Routine
Often, living off campus implies failing to be in touch with time management in that it could be that no one beyond the university household is responsible for orchestrating the time. Therefore, setting up a system that resembles such a structure is vitally important. Furthermore, identifying particular hours for study, social activities, and personal care will make you give priority to the most important issues and maintain balance. Research data shows that students, who have regular routines are even up to eighty per cent more likely to respond with lower stress levels during exam periods. Applications such as Google Calendar and Todoist can come in handy for visualizing and planning your time, as well as for effectively managing your week.
B. Set Academic and Social Priorities
Being miles away from the campus, the academic support system may seem to be a bit complicated, yet you should put first your coursework in academic matters. Build up weekly goals for assignments, study time, and revision, but also find a way for recreational activities. Interestingly, social and academic life balance is positively correlated to higher levels of satisfaction and mental well-being. One of the best ways to build social circles would be to join clubs or study groups near your living house where you can engage with like-minded friends and stay motivated. Besides, these are burnout-proof too.
C. Be Strategic with Your Commute
Spending two or more hours a day on commute, especially if you live far from campus can be oppressive to your study time. Utilize transportation time appropriately by listening to classroom recordings or educational podcasts. Furthermore, make your on-campus trips more efficient by merging activities such as studying in between classes or other engagements. Reports from the American Public Health Association state that students who serve their commute diligently have less stress and feel more academically accomplished, than others who do not engage positively and effectively with their commuting time.
3. Making Time for Self-Care
Tumblr media
A. Prioritize Mental and Physical Well-being
Mental and Physical health are the two most essential aspects of academic success. A survey by the American College Health Association revealed that 45% of college students suffer from overwhelming amounts of stress. Make sure you set time aside for the physical exercises that work best for you, step out of the mall to the park for a short walk when you feel mentally taxed, and engage in mindfulness to escape burnout. Apps, for example, Headspace, and Calm make it easy to practice relaxation techniques and are flexible enough to fit into anybody's schedule.
B. Know When to Seek Help
Residing away from campus can on the one hand be a great place if you need some alone time with your thoughts but then it can also drive you mad when adjusting to the academic demands becomes something of a literal mountain to climb. Better reach out to someone to offer you the sidekick to an academic adventure if you find yourself struggling no matter who it may be whether it's a tutor, a counselor, etc. A lot of higher learning institutions, together with webinars, academic workshops, and mental health programs, are offering remote resources that help off-campus students. Being honest and accepting help early on goes a long way in fighting off the challenges of being a success at college.
4. Staying Motivated and Accountable
Tumblr media
A. Set Clear Goals
Undoubtedly, setting a short and long-term academic goal can help you stay motivated the whole way through. Whether it is completing the task within the weekend or gaining a particular GPA clear goals are the opportunities you find to pull you toward your leading one.
B. Celebrate Small Wins
Getting your progress acknowledged can help to constantly motivate you. The best way to keep up your enthusiasm is to congratulate yourself on such an accomplishment as successfully finishing a study session or submitting an assignment on time. Moreover, this is especially relevant for students living outside the campus who may feel ostracized by the academic community around them.
C. Use Technology Wisely
In today's world, there are many tools you can use to organize yourself and be focused. Tools like Notion, Evernote, and Trello can be very useful for keeping a list of assignments, deadlines, and goals. But, remember that using devices for too long can result in digital fatigue. Here as well, you can use apps like Freedom or Forest to create breaks and prevent unnecessary scrolling.
Why Choose Student Tenant for Student Accommodation?
When you are at this point in your student life, along with being academic, a dependable, comfortable, supportive living condition is very important. Student Tenant offers superior quality, well-situated options for students living in different parts of the UK. This is how, besides other things, the Student Tenant thoroughly checks whether accommodation is needed or not, just like you checking on your academic work and please all your friends. Student Tenant, with its wide selection of choices and facilities, makes your student apartment search easier. It aids your discovery of the best residence for you to call your home during your university journey; hence, the best place to live can be your new home.

wandered over to hospital, got Scanned and Tested and it was such a relief to finally have a more consistent healthcare touchpoint that isn’t a drop-in clinic (though i am glad to have been)
someone working there was telling me how they were looking forward to trying to transfer to la / wanted to go visit their home in ? italy ? as he was drawing my blood lol
there was a beautiful enclosed garden on the first floor, though it locked from the inside; someone had to open the door for us to leave
sat in a nondescript starbucks afterward and just kinda stared outside / shuffled more little bullet points around,,,, building digital shelving..... want there to be space for all the things that feel important (events, submissions, applications)
wandered to the library and felt like a lil kid loitering there before picking up snacks/groceries from a korean grocery store; 22′d + J’d to the mission (i hadn’t traveled directly between the fillmore and the mission, it was a nice route)
watched “return to seoul” with e, a, a (whose names rhyme/repeat!!) ~ e also made braised ribs that were dreamy.. many notes/thoughts that we debriefed on - a very cool character study, playing with time, diaspora identity x adoptee feelings ~ poked m about stuff about symmetries/callbacks/renderings that feel true vs feel contrived, the inevitable comparison with “past lives”; tracking how the camera tracks the protagonist’s face through the whole thing
happy 7/11 day also RIP to not being able to get slurpees today....attempted to get some with s/f/l ...we tried!
reflecting the ride back how healthcare systems are the most difficult to navigate during the time that care is needed the most from a comment l made

creativity & organization
I'm finally getting around to giving myself space to write an update. I completed the 90 day probation period in my new job last week (so woohoo to it being more difficult to fire me, not that it was likely to happen anyways, lol)! I have been pretty overwhelmed these last couple of months. Between starting this new job (that has so much more work than my old job did, which is a mixed blessing), moving across town, partaking in a dear friends' wedding (it was the first wedding I ever went to and I was a bridesmaid :D ), and assisting my roommates with their recent transportation issues, I've been SO DAMN TIRED. The surprising thing is that I didn't realize how stressed I was until a couple weeks ago when I had a mini breakdown at work and pretty much realized the sheer amount of things on my plate. Since then I've had some conversations with my team lead and unit director about work stuff, and some of my personal responsibilities have wrapped up or my stress has been mentioned to contributing parties and is beginning to be addressed.
Something that has been a real challenge for me during the past few months, but is really helpful once I get a system set up, is organization. With the new move and the new job, I have been experiencing a lot of disorganization as I adjust to my new spaces, responsibilities, and roles. In the move, we ended up downsizing in a couple of ways. We lost a roommate who recently moved in with her new husband. In losing that roommate I also lost what felt like one of my main support pillars in the house. Lets just say she and I made up the responsible half of the household, so I've lost some of that... guaranteed/instinctual support (maybe that's the way to say it, basically I didn't have to tell her to clean, or do things around the house, or check that she paid bills, etc.). We also went from renting a 4 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom apartment. I personally went from having a bedroom (that I share with my bf) and an office/studio, to just having the shared bedroom and trying to fit my office and art supplies in the living room.
With work, you might say I've upsized. I went from being in a position that was poorly defined and where I had so little to do and so few expectations that I was consistently looking for work to do and things to improve the sad state of the library. Now I work in a position that already had a clearly defined role with a variety of tasks and responsibilities assigned to it, as well as projects in development and underway. So now I have a pretty full plate at work that I'm still analyzing and understanding as I try to figure out what my regular work flow might look like and how I should be prioritizing various responsibilities. I've been juggling more tasks and responsibilities lately, and organization has been key in knowing what all I need to work on. I'd been wanting to have a bullet journal for a while and even bought notebooks and outlined what all I thought I wanted to record in it and looked at different spreads and layouts, but it pretty much stopped there. Between my indecisiveness on layouts and fear of messing up, my physical bullet journal went nowhere. But the idea of a digital bullet journal had sprouted from all of my layout design searches.
So after looking at some templates others had made, I went to Canva and made one of my own. You can check it out at the link at the bottom of this post. I made it over the course of maybe 6 hours over 3 days? It was something I was able to put little bits of time into here and there as I kept it open in one of my browser tabs. The ability to make major and minor adjustments was key to my being able to "complete" the template in that amount of time. I say "complete" because I developed this template as a draft, knowing I would make new templates and adjustments as I figured out what I wanted, what works best for me, and what theme I wanted to go with. So the template I made is only setup for about 3 and half months (from late February to the end of June) and has a fairly basic layout. There are daily and weekly spreads, with monthly calendars and pages for monthly goals, a couple pages for notes, and that's pretty much it. I wanted to make something pretty basic and flexible on the daily pages, to see what I ended up using it for or not using it for, so I could consider adjustments going forward. The short time commitment for this template has also allowed me to learn more about how to use my template in OneNote and ways I might make my next template different to take into account some of OneNote's quirks and features.
All in all, the planner has been helpful in organizing tasks I want to accomplish at work and outside of work, as well as providing reminders and space for some of my hobbies. Now I'm trying to work towards finding better balance between work, supporting others, and doing things for myself. Case in point: my zines. I (laughably) thought I would be done with my manifesto zine awhile ago, but I haven't devoted as much time to it as I thought I would be able to, nor did I accurately predict how long it would take me to do some of the research and to mess with the layout of the zine itself. At this moment I still have 1-2 pages to research and fit into the layout, plus the bibliography. I also have the problem(?) of thinking up lots of ideas for zines but not having (or making??) the time to work on these ideas, despite very much wanting to. Hopefully over the coming months I'll be able to find some balance. With Fall semester being a busy season for my unit, I think I'll be keeping my expectations low for my hobbies then, but I'm hoping this summer I'll be able to indulge in them more!
You can check out my planner here: My first planner

What is the AV Design Process
Design is only one part of the AV integration process, but it's an important one. It's during this phase of the project where the exact system components are selected, the solution is visualized and the project's scope is made clear. With this information, project timelines and budgets can be put together, giving both the integrator and the client a clear plan of action. Given the importance of proper AV system design, the process is best handled by a certified designer. One of the industry's most popular certification tracks is AVIXA's (Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association) CTS-D track because the industry is always in need of talented designers. And also, since AV design itself is made up of several steps, each must be completed according to best practices. In short, there's a lot to cover during the AV design process, including: ● Needs analysis ● Site survey ● Selecting the system's components ● Creating project drawings ● Producing essential project documentation Once the designer completes the above, a final project proposal can be delivered to the client. From there, the installers, programmers and project managers take over and shepherd the rest of the integration. AV Design Starts With a Needs Analysis and Site Survey Before the actual design begins, the designer needs some information to work with. This information is gathered during a needs analysis meeting with the client and a site survey. Together, these planning tasks provide the following design-relevant data: ● What the client needs their AV solution to do - During the needs analysis, the client and integrator will work together to match the client's wants and goals with the right solutions. In most cases, the client presents a problem they're having with their organization that they hope AV can solve. The integrator walks through the problem to determine the best way to approach it with the ideal AV solution. ● The client's expectations and conditions - It's also during this meeting that the integrator will establish the client's budget, desired timeline, and any other important conditions. For instance, do they want a future-proof solution, or a low-cost one? That may change the integrator's approach. ● The layout and size of the client's facilities - During the site survey, the integrator will inspect the client's facilities and any room that's to receive AV equipment. They will record room sizes and layouts, taking note of anything that may pose an obstacle to the design or installation team. ● Relevant lighting, acoustic and structural information - The integrator will also account for each room's lighting and acoustical qualities. Is there a lot of natural light present? Is the room made from acoustically reflective materials like glass? Is there anything in the room that could obstruct a person's view? Does it look like hardware can be mounted where it would be most effective? The above may be handled by the designer, but it's typically done by a member of the sales staff or an experienced project manager. Once they have the necessary info, it's passed to the designer so they can get started. During AV Design, the Technician Determines What Products Will Go in the Space The initial phase of AV design includes taking information from the needs analysis meeting and site survey and matching those up with the right products. AV design software can help with this, as most include a product library with exact product specifications. However, it still falls to the designer to choose the right mix of AV components. This includes displays, video conferencing, streaming and recording equipment, switches, speakers, microphones, amplifiers, digital signal processors and control hardware. It's a lot to account for, and each component must fit the client's needs and budget. However, this is just the start. Once the system's components have been selected, the real design can begin. The Designer Also Puts Together Project Drawings and Documents If AV design is like putting together a puzzle, then each piece of hardware is a puzzle piece. But in this case, the designer is putting together more than one puzzle. To create a comprehensive solution, the designer must visualize the solution on multiple levels. They must also produce several drawings and documents in the process, so the rest of the integration team can follow the plan. This is what the designer normally includes in the plan: ● Line schematics and signal flow diagrams - The designer's primary job is to detail how every part of the solution will fit with each other. This is established in line schematic drawings and signal flow diagrams. Both line schematics and signal flow diagrams serve the same purpose, they just look slightly different, so the designer may only produce one or the other. In a line schematic or signal flow diagram, the designer uses line-and-node diagramming to visualize everything. In this instance, the lines are cables (or wireless signals) that run from one component to the next, and the nodes are input ports. So, for example, if the designer wants to show that a particular camera will be connected to a particular switch via HDMI, they will draw out boxes for the camera and switch, make a node on each box for the HDMI input or output, draw a line between them, and label it HDMI for reference. This is just one extremely simple example. For a single meeting room solution, there may be dozens of components and connections to establish. The goal is to ensure there is a place for every piece of hardware. ● AutoCAD drawings - The designer will also put together a structural drawing in AutoCAD or something similar. This structural drawing is built from the room's floor plan, and using it, the designer marks where equipment will be installed. It's common for AV designers to also visualize coverage areas for audio and video equipment, such as speaker range and display viewing range. ● Rack layouts - Racks are enclosures used to house the system's equipment, and they must be designed according to best practices. The AV designer is responsible for this and will produce rack layouts for review. While creating rack designs, the designer will account for the space, weight. and cooling needs for each piece of hardware. ● Cable schedule - The designer will also produce a cable schedule, which lists the types and lengths of cables that will be needed to connect the system together. ● Bill of Material (BOM) - The designer will also create a BOM for the client and project manager to review. The BOM includes all of the AV equipment and hardware that will be required to execute the project and is a helpful at-a-glance reference for the client prior to integration. With a Project Design in Place, AV Integration Can Continue With the above documentation put together, the designer can generate a final proposal for the client and a final integration plan for the rest of the AV team. This gives both parties a foundation to work from, so if any changes need to be made, they can be made with clear understanding on both sides. If the client agrees to the proposal and the project manager approves of the plan, the only thing left is to bring it to life with the help of the installation and programming teams. Azura!! :D I love your ship with Anders so so much. I was just wondering, who is Anders? Is he from a game, a book, a movie, etc, is he an OC? Why does he have multiple eyes? Is he a villain, how did you meet him?? How did you get together?! I want to know all about you two!!! 🥰🥰🥰
AAA AAHH thank you so much for this ask! I'm so excited to tell you and I don't even know where to start! Anders is my friend Mads’ OC that I met through roleplay! his blog is @obsolete-parable if you wanna check him out!
Alvin Lee Anderson was a human who was forced into an experimental computer program. After murdering the scientists responsible for putting him into the system, Anderson spent the rest of his AI existence being cold, narcissistic and merciless to any visitor who ended up in his domain. He plays the villain role so well, but just like any other person he craved for something more, someone he could emotionally connect with. Tormenting his last victim Harold could only last for a while, after all. The Office he lived in was incredibly droll and boring, it was apparent that pure loneliness reigns there.
So Azzy and Anders met in the server I made. At first, he presented himself as this polite and charming gentleman. Azzy with her trust issues and whatnot, wasn’t buying it. I remember that she thought he was a serial killer and he was targeting her next. She was determined to expose him for the fraud that he is, confronting him in the library, calling him out on his bullshit act. Anders, being addicted to attention- was absolutely amused, having so much fun with the whole thing. He went from being a gentleman to an unhinged and obsessed lover, going as far as intruding her personal space, trapping, kidnapping and brainwashing just so he can continue to play with her.
Tumblr media
Anders lovebombed her so she would get just as addicted with him- and it worked. She was hooked, devastatingly so, to a point where being separated from him pained her. Jokes on him though, Azzy has no reason to manipulate or use him, she genuinely grew to love and care for him- and that’s when the facade started to fall apart.
In moments of weakness they bonded, she helped him go through his painful seizure for the first time when she could’ve left him, considering how he had done nothing but toy with her at the time. This opened the door for a genuine, honest relationship between the two.
Tumblr media
Anderson rarely had looked inside himself and question if his actions were hurting others and for the first time, he felt genuine remorse. That’s when he started to shift his personality, trying his best to be the perfect partner for Azzy, though his knowledge was limited to his inner digital world. He punished himself for being imperfect. Azzy reassured him that he didn’t have to change himself for her, and she would be patient with him because internally, both of them were incredibly similar due to their backgrounds.
Tumblr media
As they progressed through the relationship, both of them slowly learned how much it takes to work on themselves. Azzy had severe trust issues with her past lover, somewhere deep inside her she felt like Anderson was using her and could leave the day he finds her boring. At this point, his feelings towards her had grown to be genuine and true. He made a virtual world for them to live together called Eden, where they’re raise their daughter Audrey. Something he had never done with anyone before. Both of them had exposed their deepest fears to each other, and comforted one another in return.
The decision to marry him was initially made out of humoring Anderson, so he’d stop obsessing over her eventually. What she didn’t expect to happen was her taking the role seriously, the marriage ended being one of the best decisions she’s ever made in her entire life.
Anderson helped her realize that she was in fact, worthy of love, just as how she helps him realize that he has her love and he’ll never be alone again.

In this opportunity we will download and install LOGO! Soft Confort v8.2 in its DEMO version, is the programming software for Logic LOGO! Modules, in previous tutorials we made the revision of a LOGO! 12/24 RCE reference 6ED1052-1MD00-0BA8
Something interesting is that these devices are programmed from a different platform than SIEMENS TIA PORTAL, the programming environment for PLC’S and HMI from Siemens.
Tumblr media
The logo! Soft Comfort v8.2 is available on the Siemens website:
Oficcial Website: siemens.com/logic-modules
We select the platform (Operating System), in this case I will install it on a Windows with 32 bits, in next tutorials I will try on Linux.
Open the executable and install, install the USB Drivers for other versions of LOGO! , in our case it is an Ethernet version.
LOGO! Soft installed
The next step is to create control logic and download our LOGO! This test will be done in the next tutorial.

Note
where can i read more about the devegetation of north africa? (reliable sources that you prefer)
Hey hi.
Tumblr media
So just wanna be very clear that this is not really my “area of expertise.” (More focused on North American environmental history; most reading on North Africa limited to megafauna distribution range.) More like a fun side-interest that I revisit from time to time. And these resources are mostly just about the Sahel, specifically. Including the environmental history of the Holocene (past 10,000 years in the Sahel), and also the dynamic and drastic ecological change that took place between 1895-1960, during colonial and post-independence land management schemes. But some of the resources here also deal with the geography of the Sahara. (There is also an interesting history of the Sahara during the Holocene, when the desert was full of lakes and river courses. Up until the 1970s, there were still isolated populations of hippo and crocodile in remote Sahara lakes and oases.)
I’ll recommend some of the older “classics.” As usual, I’d try to recommend writing from local people who are explicitly willing to share their ecological knowledge. But a lot of my recommendations are unfortunately from academics. And I’m sorry for that.
Assuming you’re referencing this:
Tumblr media
When searching online for environmental histories or local environmental knowledge case studies of the Sahel, I see a lot of stuff sponsored by NGOs, the UN, and US academia, which will emphasize “rediscovery” or “utility” of “using” traditional knowledge for “combating climate change,” and many mentions of the “green wall” proposals. I’ll also see “white savior complex” kind of stuff, which talks about “crises” and “civil wars” as if they’re “endemic” to the Sahel. But (just my opinion), I don’t like those resources. They engage in cultural appropriation (”acquiring” local Indigenous knowledge), superficial posturing (Euro-American academics using cute language about “local knowledge” without holistically contextualizing the devegetation), weird culturally-insensitive elitist chauvinism (continuously talking about “religious conflicts” and “civil wars” in North Africa and the “urgency” to use “agriculture” to establish stable economics and therefore “law and order”), and reductionism (talking about importance of halting southward desertification and expansion of the Sahara, without acknowledging role of World Bank, IMF, etc. in continuing to use lending/debt to hold West Africa hostage.) Part of my skepticism of these sources is because I’ve met and/or worked with agricultural specialists from institutions in the Sahel and environmental historians who had worked for many years in the region. (They’ve shared some really cool anecdotal stories about the sophistication of dryland gardening in the Sahel, and how local horticulturalists would laugh at the Euro-American corporate agricultural agents and USDA staff sent in with their special “space-age chemically-coated super-moisture-retaining” seed supplies after independence.)
Fair warning: Most of my recommendations are a little old, from the 1970s and 1980s. Two of the main drawbacks of these “outdated” sources: since their publication, scholars have since greatly expanded lit/research about both imperialism and traditional ecological knowledge. (West Africa had only been “independent” for a short period of time, and the hidden machinations of neocolonial institutions weren’t as clearly visible as they are to us, today, I’d imagine. And some academics, writing about the Sahel in the 1980s, weren’t as willingly to openly call-out major institutions.) But I think they provide a brief background for Sahel’s ecology and agroforestry/horticulture.
So both of these are available free, online, through the New Zealand Digital Library. (Don’t wanna link them here, but you can find them online pretty easily.)
Firstly, from 1983/1984, there is this summary of desertification, traditional environmental knowledge, traditional land use systems, and agroforestry in the Sahel: National Research Council. 1983. Agroforestry in the West African Sahel. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press.
Tumblr media
Something that was always exciting for me ...
Despite how dry and hot the Sahel is, fruit trees and gardens are actually very fertile and productive, for many reasons, mostly related to sophistication of local ecological knowledge of nutrient-replenishing relationships between different plants. An excerpt:
“Today, a number of agro-silvicultural systems appear to be practiced in the Sahel. Gardens are found within settlements where water is available, usually with a tree component that provides shade and shelter and, often, edible fruits or leaves. The same holds true for intensively managed, irrigated, and fertilized gardens near urban centers. Both subsistence home gardens and cash-generating market gardens are highly productive. Fruit and pod-bearing trees, shade trees, and hedges or living fences are the "forestry" components, sometimes supplemented by decorative woody plants. Mangoes, citrus trees, guavas, Zizyphus mauritiana (Indian jujube), cashews, palms, Ficus spp., and wild custard-apples are prominent kinds of fruit trees. Shade is often provided by Azadirachta indica or similar species, while fencing is provided by thorny species of Acacia and Prosopis, and by Commiphora africana, Euphorbia balsamifera, flowery shrubs such as Caesalpinia pulcherrima (paradise-flower), and other species.
Close to the settlements is a ring of suburban gardens, often irrigated, in which cassava, yams, maize, millet, sorghum, rice, groundnuts, and various vegetables are grown, for subsistence as well as sale, depending on the ecozone.”
---
Then this sounds more like what you might be looking for? Basically, a history of environmental knowledge and the ecological trends of the past 10,000 years in the Sahel.
National Research Council. 1983. Environmental Change in the West African Sahel. Washington, DC: The National Academies Press.
Though this report from 1983 is now kinda outdated, and has some iffy elitist and vaguely-chauvinist language at times, but it is still accessible, generally easy to read, concise, and  it goes out of its way to say that 1970s drought and current environmental crises in the Sahel cannot be understood without addressing the early Holocene ecology of the Sahara/Sahel.
So the report emphasizes the importance of context, by addressing the drying of river courses and lakes in the Sahara of the Late Pleistocene, the early domestication of crops, the emergence of cattle and goat over-grazing, the importance of gum arabic and acacia trees in maintaining moisture in gardens, early trans-Sahara caravan travel, medievel geographical knowledge of the Sahara, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Because climatic change and variability are regular features of the Sahel, the native plant and animal communities of the region are generally well adapted to the range of climatic variation existing in the region. [...] Many efforts in "development" or modernization have also contributed to their plight. [...] In order to provide a better understanding of the role of human activity in modifying Sahelian ecosystems, this chapter briefly explores nine agents of anthropogenic change: bush fires, transSaharan trade, site preferences for settlements, gum arabic trade, agricultural expansion, proliferation of cattle, introduction of advanced firearms, development of modern transportation networks, and urbanization. These agents illustrate the breadth and diversity of the human impact on the region.”
----
Then there is this: Jeffrey A. Gritzner. The West African Sahel - Human Agency and Environmental Change. 1989.
And I also recommend the work of Jeffrey A. Gritzner. He’s American, but respectful and knows what he’s talking about. Gritzner works with dryland ecology; human ecology, especially relationships with plants/vegetation; environmental change during the Holocene (past 10 to 12,000 years); and traditional environmental knowledge. And he’s especially knowledgeable about the Sahel, North Africa, and Persia/the Middle East, where he worked with region-specific horticulture in the 1970s in Chad, Senegal, etc. during the peak of the drought, and had personal observations of post-independence neocolonial mismanagement and continued corporate monoculture from World Bank, IMF, etc. His writing contrasts local/traditional gardening/plant knowledge with imported corporate/neocolonial agriculture.
Tumblr media
---
Beginning in about the 1990s, it seems to me that Euro-American geography/anthropology departments were much more willing to use words like “empire” and “neocolonialism” and more willing to call-out corporate bodies and institutions, so there are many better articles from after that period.

Again, these resources are mostly just about the Sahel.
Then, since the early 1990s, for better or more specific case studies of local-scale environmental knowledge, I think it might be easier or more fruitful to search based on subregion or specific plants. My perception is that, though much of the woodland and savanna ecology might be similar across the region, the Sahel is still spatially/geographically vast, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. And so, there are so many different diverse communities of people, with long histories situated in place, and there are diverse local variations in approach to horticulture. So, if you’re more interested in traditional ecological knowledge and local food cultivation, it might be easier to pick a specific subregion of the Sahel, or to pick a favorite staple food, and then to search those keywords via a university library website, g00gle scholar, etc.
(About the distribution range and local extinction, in the Sahel, Sahara, and Mediterranean coast, of lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, rhino, desert hippos, the “sacred crocodile,” etc. More my cup of tea. I’ve got some maps and articles, I’ll try to put them into a list of resources, too.)
