Innocence is something that D has and always will cherish regardless of how he views humanity in general. There is a lot of cruelty in the world, but for every customer who fails at keeping to their contract there are those who love their animals like their own children. It's the good that keeps a glimmer of hope ignited in the shopkeeper's heart, that humanity might not inevitably doom itself and one day earn the right to enter paradise when it all comes to an end. Children in particular keep this hope alive and while D isn't overly fond of how noisy and rambunctious they are, most youngsters do love animals more than their adult counterparts. They also tend to see the true forms of the pets at this store, unlike grown-ups who are blinded by their desires and see only what they want to see. For these reasons, D is more patient when it comes to children but even they must be careful to treat their animal friends well, and to learn from any mistakes they do make. Innocence is a wonderful thing but like trust, it's gone forever once lost.
