Fresh off 2018’s collaborative LP with the enigmatic MF DOOM, “CZARFACE meets METAL FACE,” the adventure continues as CZARFACE now faces off with Wu-Tang Clan’s GHOSTFACE KILLAH. “Czarface meets Ghostface” brings strictly mind melting beats and bars as 3 emcees clash like villains & heroes in the Savage Land. Czarface, a hip-hop & comics force comprised of WU-TANG CLAN general Inspectah Deck, Esoteric (who recently penned an X-Men comic for Marvel) and super producer 7L team up with Ghostface aka Iron-Man aka Tony Starks for murderous meyhem!

What's so good?

Comic book heroes CZARFACE return with news of another collaboration album. The trio of Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, lyricist Esoteric and producer 7L are teaming with legend Ghostface Killah for a full length album dropping this February.  Until then the awesome foursome have given fans a taste of what to expect with the old school "Iron Claw." Recruiting Kendra Morris on the hook, this battle between good and evil is steeped in hip-hop history, with Deck, Ghostface and Esoteric swapping engaging barbs over 7L's pulsating beat. It might be three months away but Czarface Meets Ghostface is shaping up as one of 2019s must hear albums. I can't wait! Czarface Meets Ghostface drops February 15.

Earlier this year, we reviewed the supergroup Czarface (whose members are MC Esoteric, Inspectah Deck and DJ 7L) and MF Doom‘s project — Czarface Meets Metal Face. Czarface & Ghostface Killah — Czarface Meets Ghostface (Silver Age)

East Coast collective Czarface (Esoteric, Inspectah Deck, 7L and Jeremy) fresh off their 2018 collaboration with MF Doom, team up with the Inspectah’s old Wu Tang sparring partner Ghostface Killah for 12 tracks of old school Marvel(ous) mash-ups and skits on their new album Czarface Meets Ghostface. 

Producers 7L and Jeremy AKA The Czar-Keys mix clips from old movies and TV shows with funky beats and samples to provide a 1990s style bed for Ghostface, Inspectah and Esoteric to face off and throw down. Packed with superhero and villain references, Czarface Meets Ghostface plays out like an aural comic book.

“Back at Ringside” opens the record with a classic piece of WWE bradaggio introducing the combatants over a mid tempo boom-bap and we’re immediately in classic Wu Tang/Madlib territory. Kendra Morris adds a soul chant “Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t push me” to album highlight and first single “Iron Claw” as Ghostface comes on as Iron Man holding his own against Esoteric and Deck. On “Powers and Stuff” the fans get involved lauding their heroes as the trio call each other out: “Rappers get exposed to the ways of standing too close/When I spray the gift/the pavement split/Such an anomaly/I’m still being chased by agent Smith.” 

“Super Soldier Serum” references Captain America, Star Wars, James Bond and Agent 86 and cracks along with memorably amusing lines like Esoteric rapping “Yo, the flow real/Like human interaction/Yours predictable/Like rappers movin’ into fashion” and Ghostface’s “Off the grid/Maxwell Smart is how I live/Daniel Craig, Casino Royale/I'm so slick/Armani suits/the linen flame is resistant.” It also ends on, of all things, a flute solo. 

The album gets explicitly political on “The King Heard Voices” with Esoteric decrying police violence towards the Black Community: “The stuff I’m kicking ain’t corrupted like the justice system/Black widow feelin' trapped in America/'Cause the cops should've been Captain America/With that iron, man/They put you in the dirt or frying pan/With no body cam/Another body, damn.” 

Although the music is a little one paced, the production is always interesting. The Czar-Keys pack each track with detail and sinister looms of sound. Kendra Morris’ voice adds presence and soul to “Iron Claw,” “Morning Ritual” and the “The King Heard Voices.” The influence of J Dilla and Madlib is clear but welcome. Czarface Meets Ghostface may not be the stone cold classic the participants are capable of but it is a very enjoyable trip through a world populated by comic book and movies heroes and villains.

Action Bronson / White Bronco: Third listen of White Bronco. Realizing that not everyone’s a big Bronson fan, it’s certainly fair to criticize his persona (which verges on the problematic at times), but the production of his records is always on point. For my money, he uses guitars and guitars samples as well as anyone in the hip-hop game today. Even dating back to something like “Easy Rider,” guitars are always a big part of his work, and that remains evident on White Bronco. One of the biggest observations I had on this listen.

Desperate Journalist / Grow Up: As good as Desperate Journalist’s self-titled debut was, their sophomore effort Grow Up was even better. There’s a nice progression that’s evident here, with “Resolution” proving to be their strongest statement yet, while “Be Kind” isn’t far behind in its own right. I also respect that they always seem to release their albums in the first part of the year, kind of carving out that specific time of the year for their sound. They definitely deserve a higher profile than they currently have, and here’s hoping that the new record grants them that.

CZARFACE & Ghostface Killah / CZARFACE Meets Ghostface: Don’t have a ton of thoughts on this one. It was fine, but the bulk of it really blended together. I dug the beat of “Czarrcade ‘87″ and its overall nod to pro-wrestling history and “Iron Claw” stood out to me as well, though that’s likely a product of it being recognizable as part of the pre-release cycle. The opening track also contains the worst Randy Savage impression I think I’ve ever heard, so that’s something?

Biggest music news for me today was the announcement of a new Pure Bathing Culture record and the release of its lead single, “Devotion.” I’d probably checked the PBC page in Apple Music on a weekly basis checking for new tracks or any hint of a new record, so it shouldn’t be surprising that I listened to “Devotion” no less than 10 (TEN) times today. It’s a stronger opening single than “Pray for Rain” was from the album with that same name, and Daniel Hindman’s guitar tones are downright Mark Knopfler-ian at times. Absolutely cannot wait for Night Pass’s release.
