The Marginal Service Episode 12 + Final Thoughts: Marginal Explosion
The final episode felt like it had too much to fit in. At least the ending is happy. I think the best thing about this episode is the happy ending.
Tumblr media
Why I think it feels like too much is the fact that we get actual aliens and the reveal that the UN are the true enemies. Then, the Marginal Service come in. Then, the Borderlanders come in. Zeno finally reunites with his son and then Brian and Zeno go fight the mothership. See? Sounds crazy, right?
Like I mentioned in my review for the previous episode, the UN are the true villains. It also turns out that the guy with the mustache has been doing this because he’s afraid of aliens. He was the guy in the movie that Brian saw back in Episode 2; what a surprise. While what he did is bad, I don’t like the fact that he gets brushed off to the side as the real aliens come in as threats. Fortunately, he still gets punished.
The aliens feel like last-minute additions because they’re here to give Borderlanders some purpose and to be seen as good people. It turns out that everything the Marginal Service has been trying to uncover regarding Rubber’s organization has been to fight aliens. The main Borderlanders featured throughout the show come in to fight. I’m glad that Isabella is back. She’s so hot. Also, Rubber’s guitar is also a gun. HE HAS A GUITAR GUN!
The reunion between Zeno and his son Noah was heartwarming. I was surprised Noah was still able to recognize his father even after ten years. I’m also glad that the kidnapped kids actually aged, but Noah looks rather tiny for a fifteen year old. I’m assuming he didn’t get enough nutrients being stuck in there.
The battle between Brian and Zeno against the mothership was kind of weird. Like, how did Zeno managed to get changed and jump onto the top of that UFO? Like, how is Brian able to control the freaking UFO and knows where to shoot? I also kind of knew these two weren’t going to die because they’re the main characters. It’d also be a waste to have Zeno and Noah reunite and then have Zeno die.
At least everyone’s happy in the end. Immigrants are getting equal rights. The Marginal Service members are back to their daily lives. Theodore got his occult goods back. Zeno and Noah finally become family again with Brian occasionally visiting and making Zeno jealous because he’s an overprotective dad. The Borderlanders are also happy with Rubber Suit having a small concert in prison and the other Borderlander prison mates are having a good time with his performance.
All is happy, I guess. This anime was okay at best. It’s something I wouldn’t ever recommend. I’d only suggest this if you are a seiyuu fan. The voice actors all deserve a raise to being the only reason this anime managed to stay afloat.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I’ll be honest. This anime’s not that great. It’s only saving grace is the voice cast. Why cast such high quality voice actors for a show like this? The voice actors did the very best to make this anime stay afloat.
If there are good qualities, it’s that the anime was creative with how they used Borderlanders and Aliens for the sci-fi aspects. I did like how Borderlanders and such were a bit of a mystery that eventually got resolved in the end.
I also liked some of the characters. I liked Cyrus, Lyra, Rubber Suit and Isabella. The rest feels too one note. Brian’s okay since he got some development. Robin and Bolts also feel too one-note. The only character I dislike is Zeno. Others are just there or kind of forgettable.
The opening and ending songs are another saving grace. Mamoru Miyano and Yuma Uchida’s vocals are top notch. The opening and ending songs are the some of the few I never skip. Uchida’s rapping skills are great too.
I will repeat: the only good thing about this anime is the voice cast. That’s all. I only watched this because of the voice cast. They’re so good for such a bad anime. Like, when are you ever going to hear Kouki Uchiyama, the king of stoic anime men, use a gremlin voice again? When are you ever going to hear Mamoru Miyano click his tongue constantly again?
I wanted to like this anime and I did sometimes. All I can say is that no one should watch this unless they’re bored or watch anime for voice actors. That’s it. This anime gets a 3/10 for me. It’s a three because the voice actors saved this explosion of a show.
Marginal Explosion, everybody!

The Marginal Service Episode 9 Review: Can Theodore Be Trusted?
Honestly, this episode was a bit of a cop-out. I honestly thought Theodore was the big bad due to how the episode was being played out. Fortunately, it wasn’t the case and the suspense throughout the episode was in preparation of Zeno’s birthday!
Tumblr media
However, Zeno wasn’t wrong to suspect Theodore in a way. The way Rubber’s case is being handled is awfully suspicious. Why is it so top secret? Don’t tell me that Rubber’s going to break out in the last episode. I can feel it. Please prove me wrong, writers.
Zeno was highly anal in this episode. I know that it’s because of Rubber’s gas still affecting him, but dang, it’s a bit sad to see at this point. What caused him to be so doubtful and distrusting? I’m sure that the symbol he saw towards the end has something to do with it. We’ve got everyone’s past revealed except for Zeno, Theodore and Pecks’s. Given the buildup, we are definitely getting Zeno’s back story at long last. I’m ready to see why this man became a fridge.
The character interactions were funny in this episode. Congrats to Cyrus for getting smooched by Lyra. It’s cute seeing him all flustered and such. Lyra seems to have issues with relationships, so I’m unsure if these two are going to be canon. A little ship tease don’t hurt, though. Bolts and Robin are the same as usual with their bickering and such. Pecks didn’t have much screen time, but it was said that he has a girlfriend. Cyrus was like “Is she a capybara or a human?” I’d like to know what sort of animal has caught Pecks’ interest too. Brian is slowly becoming a good guy with the way he’s not as snappy with Zeno as before. I like seeing the change from earlier episodes to now.
I can’t wait to see what sort of past Zeno has. Would it make me like it? That depends. If his past helps me understand him and gets me to find him likable, sure. If not, then no. It all depends on the execution.

The Marginal Service Episode 6 Review
These episodes are getting a lot better in terms of pacing and writing quality. I’m surprised. This week’s episode has a lot of action, back story and buildup for a two-parter. I’m amazed how much content was put in without it being too rushed and such.
Tumblr media
Basically, the group try to search for Rubber Suit. While they are on the way to the island, they all take a breather and have fun basking in the sun. They all fish and they accidentally encounter a shark Borderlander.
My favorite part of the episode is Cyrus finally getting that backstory content. He was the son of a wealthy doctor in America and graduated from Harvard’s medical school. He was a promising scholar, but he dabbled in forbidden cloning which caused him to be banned from medical practices. His actions and behavior in previous episodes and now is very understandable. Regardless of his disbarment, he still chooses to dabble in medical practices because he has to make what he can do in the present. I think that’s a very good lesson in general. Even if you made a grave error in your life, you can make up for it in the present.
Zeno, on the other hand, gradually gets unlikable each episode he’s in. Brian was annoying at first, but he’s slowly developing into a good person. Zeno still has the personality of a refrigerator and I cannot stand him at all. My gosh. I bet his backstory is going to be in a few episodes, and even if it’s shown, it will not make up for the incorrigible things he has done in previous episodes.
Pecks finally reveal what sort of creature he is. I’ve always assumed he was a squirrel. Instead, he’s a marmot. Close enough? But he should be referred to as a marmot now. Regardless, Pecks was pure comic relief in this episode. I’m always amazed with how Uchiyama can use that gremlin voice. I think it shines the most here.
The last portion of the episode reveals that Rubber Suit has kidnapped Robin and Bolts and is planning on scheming. I wonder what he’s going to use them for? However, I’m glad that the writers didn’t use Cyrus and Lyra as the kidnapping victims and used the buffer men as the rescue objectives. However, it makes me curious on what Rubber is going to do with them? I know for a fact that the group is at their weakest right now since they lost two of their stronger members. Cyrus is a medic; Lyra is support; Zeno is uncooperative; Pecks is a marmot; Brian is Brian. Yeah, I feel like they’re going to be at a disadvantage next episode, but they’re all smart so they should figure something out. I’ll be awaiting for the next episode on Tuesday!

The Marginal Service Episode 3 Review: F-Tier Stealth Mission
The writing of this show is an absolute dumpster fire. I know that it may seem like a time-waster to watch it; I know that it’d be best to drop an anime. But you know what? No, I’m not going to drop this anime. I want to see how much worse this writing can be. Maybe it’ll get better in the long run? I doubt it. However, I’m still sticking around for that casting. Man, what a waste of high quality voice actors for this type of anime.
Tumblr media
Why do I think this episode is hot garbage? It’s because of the way it’s executed. The Marginal Service try to crash into Rubber Suit’s party and try to get him arrested into their custody. However, the way they try to do things is like a D-list action movie that is trying to be a James Bond flick but it’s not. I guess that was its intent? I didn’t like it.
The writing made Brian look kind of like a doofus. He’s trying to bust into a secret safe and was opening all the drawers he could see, but there were over a thousand of them. Like, why? Other poor writing choices were getting Bolts to unlock a switch, but it goes horribly wrong because Robin can’t maintain his weight. Like, Bolts, just lean over with your feet! What are you trying to be? Pinnochio from Shrek 2?
Despite my gripes with the writing, I did enjoy Lyra, Cyrus, Bolts and Robin busting out terrible dance moves to distract the audience to get the skull in the fruit punch glass. I dance like Cyrus, by the way. I just feel the twist of the skull being inside the juice was not creative and the fact that it was there the whole entire time felt contrived. I assume it was there to give Pecks some screen time.
Though, the police lady was hot. She was the best thing about this episode. She reminds me of another anime character, though. I cannot remember who, though.
Oh, Zeno shows emotions in this episode! What a surprise! The dude had a personality of a refrigerator, so to see him actually react to Brian getting shot was a nice change in him. It made me realize he is a human.
The reveal of the Rubber Suit in the party being a body double was a weird revelation, but I guess they had to do something with the way they brought in their final boss this early into the story. His real self seems more sinister and I’m interested.
What is The Marginal Service’s end goal with these Borderlanders? I think I’m still going to stick around with this anime because I want to know how it ends. What will happen when they catch Rubber Suit?

The Marginal Service Episode 2 Review: Yes, Uchiyama Plays The Squirrel
This episode is Brian going on his first mission as a member of The Marginal Service with Zeno. They still don’t get along. However, we do learn some more details about Borderlanders and some of our other characters.
Tumblr media
Thanks to a B-grade horror film-like documentary played by Theodore to show Brian, he learns that Borderlanders came to this world somehow—kind of like aliens in a way. Though, they are enemies. It seems that the number of Borderlands that invaded Earth had increased since then and the ringleader of the organization is none other than Rubber Suit, the world’s top pop star. He hasn’t been formally introduced yet, but I can tell he’ll be an interesting character. He’s voiced by Yuma Uchida, so I’m sure he’s not some one-off character. I’m just surprised they introduced the final boss this quickly. What’s this anime got in store?
I’ve never seen a buddy-cop duo as dysfunctional as Brian and Zeno. Man, they don’t like each other and they clearly don’t want to get along. I wonder how it’s going to be done. All Brian does is complain and Zeno just rebuffs with indifference. Well, it’s the second episode. Hopefully, there will be some substance in future episode. I just hope it gets somewhere because watching these two argue will get old fast.
However, Bolts and Robin, on the other hand, were hilarious. They bicker a lot like Zeno and Brian, but unlike them, they actually work well together. Comedically, they’re the dumb guy-smart guy duo with Bolts being the rather air-headed one and Robin being the retorter. The way they tried to camouflage themselves but failed. Their targeting their enemies head on with their brightly colored pants was always bound to fail in the first place. The duo of Tomokazu Sugita and Yuichi Nakamura never fail to amuse.
The best character of this episode finally makes his debut. Pecks is finally introduced. He looks like a cute squirrel, but don’t let him fool you. He’s a Borderlander too and the only good one for now. He’s the antithesis of every character Kouki Uchiyama has played up until now as he is the exact opposite of cool, stoic and aloof that he is normally associated with. This creature is cute, but he tried biting Brian’s dick. What an interesting introduction. He’s also a perv, an archetype that Uchiyama rarely plays too, as he’s enamored with Lyra.
What I’ve noticed was that Bolts and Robin were grouped up in the trailers. So were Brian and Zeno, Lyra and Cyrus and Theodore and Pecks. Will we get focus episodes about these pairs? I kind of want to see what sort of relationship Cyrus and Lyra would have as they are two people I would believe have the least amount of interactions. But, we’ll see.
It’s only the second episode, but I just hope the writing gets better, especially between the characters. The voice actors are saving this anime by far. The writing and plot are all mediocre but the voice acting is god-tier. Let’s see where this anime goes.

The Marginal Service Episode 1 Review: Construction Worker Power Rangers
From what I’ve seen in this episode, the concept is like Power Rangers but with construction workers. The overall thoughts I got from this episode is that it’s actually pretty interesting. It’s mainly about a secret organization called Marginal Service that track down and destroy aliens called Borderlanders that invaded Earth. It’s only up to the group to stop and destroy these creatures.
Tumblr media
All the members are introduced right off the bat, but the MC of this quirky anime is Brian Nightraider. He’s a foreign detective who immigrated to Japan five years prior and has been working as an excellent detective until he got fired for “brutality” purposes. Yes, the setting takes place in Japan, but the main characters are all foreigners/immigrants. What’s interesting is that Japan is referred to as “Japan”, the global name of the country and not “Nihon”, the Japanese name of the country.
Brian is the rookie of the group as he gets a letter from Theodore, the head of Marginal Service after he got fired. He’s headstrong and has a strong sense of justice. He’s a normal human so he’s sort of like a fish out of water when it comes to Borderlanders and what not. He seems to be in a frenemy situation with Zeno Stokes as Zeno gives zero fucks about him while Brian is short-tempered. I’m anticipating the sort of relationships he’ll form later on. Right now, I think that Brian is interesting because he’s the fish out of water guy for now. Mamoru Miyano’s voice acting is good here.
The other characters shown right now are just archetypes for now until they get fleshed out more. Zeno is the stoic one. Robin is flirty and British. Bolts is macho and American. Lyra is a pretty lady who knows she’s pretty. Cyrus is tired, emo, possibly the only Asian amongst the foreigners and the doctor. Theodore is the old guy. Pecks is the mascot. You know what? I’m interested to see what their stories are because I’m sure they all joined because the Borderlanders ruined their lives some way or another and which is why they joined this secret organization…am I watching modern Demon Slayer but with aliens? Alien Shooters?
Although the studio that made this is Japanese, the cast being Japanese voice actors, etc, I think this show was observant enough to input “stereotypes” that you see in American shows. For example, Bolts and Robin don’t seem to get along which is a common thing you see when you have an American and a British in a show. Cyrus is most likely a foreign born Japanese but he’s a doctor, influencing the “Asian people are smart so they are doctors” stereotype. There’s also Danny who dies, enforcing the trope of “black guy dies first” in Western media. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but I find it amusing.
The voice cast is 10/10 perfection as they are all S-class seiyuus. Mamoru Miyano plays the lead Brian. Toshiyuki Morikawa plays Zeno. Yuichi Nakamura plays Robin. Tomokazu Sugita plays Bolts. Kaori Nazuka plays Lyra. Hiro Shimono plays Cyrus. Shinichiro Miki plays Theodore. Kouki Uchiyama (not voiced in this episode) is Pecks Desmont, the squirrel. Yes, you heard me. Uchiyama plays the SQUIRREL. I’m sure the anime has a lot going for it if they had the budget to hire S-class voice actors.
The opening song bangs too. Mamoru Miyano never disappoints, honestly. I think the ending song is going to be sung by Yuma Uchida, which I am stoked because he’s a good singer too. Uchida will also be a side character in this anime, which is also hype factor.
Overall, I’m going to continue watching this anime to see where it will head direction-wise. If you didn’t know, it’s an anime original, so the storyline is going to be a mystery. I’m excited though. I can’t wait to see what this anime has in store.

The Marginal Service Episode 5 Review: Lyra In the Spotlight
This is the second episode where the story’s actually pretty interesting. However, it’s a bit formulaic in a way? The Marginal Service are looking for clues towards Rubber Suit. This time, Lyra gets the spotlight as the issue the organization has this time is cyber terror. As the tech wiz of the group, it’s Lyra’s time to shine.
Tumblr media
It turns out that the recent bouts of cyber terror that’s happening with the Marginal Service were the cause of Lyra’s ex-boyfriend Eddie Snow, who happened to be both acquainted with Rubber Suit and a Borderlander.
This episode delves focus into the fact that humans and Borderlanders can be in a relationship, but it’s hard to distinguish them as Borderlanders are very good at concealing themselves. Lyra didn’t even know her ex-boyfriend was a Borderlander until now. Another important fact is that even if a human and a Borderlander have sexual intercourse, it’s hard for them to create crossbreeds. I liked learning about this little detail in this world building.
Also, I love the callback from the beginning of the episode where Zeno threw a chair at the malfunctioning computer which led to Lyra doing the same to Eddie’s computer. I honestly didn’t expect that. She did it in style as she was all naked and such.
I also really liked the moment where Pecks called Eddie a m****erfucker in English! Like, I didn’t expect Uchiyama to say that word, honestly. His English pronunciation is good, from what I heard in Buddy Daddies episode previews. It was some comedy in this rather somber episode.
Eddie as a character seems interesting? He was a Borderlander in love with a human but decided to separate with her due to illness. We’ve always seen Borderlanders as tough individuals, so for them to be sick and to probably not have proper treatment due to the foreign land. While he was living life as an AI in Rubber’s mansion, I felt like that was way too convenient in a way? However, it was thanks to this that they finally managed to track down Rubber’s location.
Overall, I actually liked this episode, but there was one thing I didn’t really like. Namely, Cyrus didn’t do anything in this episode. I know that Lyra and Cyrus mainly stay in the headquarters as their jobs mainly revolve around being support, but it would’ve been great to see Cyrus be more involved as they seem to be investigation partners like how Bolts and Robin are. Having Brian in the fray due to his MC privileges made Cyrus just there. All Cyrus really contributed was bringing up the facts about humans and Borderlanders unable to procreate together.
I just hope Cyrus gets his spotlight soon as he was the weakest link in this episode. I hope for it to be next episode. Out of all the characters, I find him the most intriguing because there’s barely anything to talk about regarding him other than that he’s a doctor who really likes cola and that he has a bit of an ego. I’ll be waiting for the day he gets the limelight.
