What Do Botanists Do On Saturday?

Here in the section of Botany we’ve adapted in some strange ways, just like plants do, to the changes of the past year and a half. Let’s learn about the off days of some of our Super Scientists in the Section of Botany!

Mason Heberling, Assistant Curator of Botany

Collecting specimens has become a focus as more time was able to be spent in the field when we weren’t allowed to be at the museum. As our new Botany Hall entrance video shows, Assistant Curator of Botany, Mason Heberling and Collections Manager Bonnie Isaac collect plant specimens on a pretty regular basis. They also snag iNaturalist observations for these plants, taking photos that show what the plant and habitat looked before being picked and pressed.

Mason studies forest understory plants, in particular, introduced species and wildflowers in our changing environment. Mason has a bunch of fun projects going on this summer, ranging from coordinating seed collections of an uncommon native grass to send to Germany for a large greenhouse study to working with a team of students to study the effects of climate change and introduced shrubs on our forest wildflowers.

In addition to work in the field, the herbarium has been a busy place this summer too! Mason has been working with Alyssa McCormick, an undergraduate research intern from Chatham University, to examine stomata (the pores on leaves for air exchange for plants to “breathe”) and leaf nutrients in everyone’s favorite plant – poison ivy!  Poison ivy has been previously shown to grow bigger and cause nastier skin rashes with increasing carbon dioxide in our air due to fossil fuel emissions. Alyssa is using specimens collected as long ago as the 1800s to examine long term changes in poison ivy.

Mason, where can we find you on a Saturday?

“This summer has been a lot of going to various places around western PA like Presque Isle or Idlewild to get out and enjoy the fresh air with my family. I can also be found most Saturdays around the house doing chores!”

Bonnie Isaac, Collection Manager

Bonnie, one of CMNH’s TikTok celebrities, and All-Star in the Mid-Atlantic plant world, has spent a lot of the past year doing fieldwork. Her PA Wild Resource Grant involved looking at most of the populations for 10 Pennsylvania rare species. She and husband Joe Isaac spent many days on the road and a few in the bog! You can see some of her videos about these unique Pennsylvania finds on Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Tiktok account: @carnegiemnh.

She diligently keeps track of various data points from latitude and longitude and elevation, to flower color, size, and associated species within a habitat. In addition to trying to make sure the plant names in our database are correct, she has also been busy georeferencing some of our specimens so that we can see on a map where each one was collected.

Bonnie, where can we find you on a Saturday?

“On most Saturdays I am either home taking care of my many chickens or getting some exercise in one of my kayaks with my spousal unit, Joe. I sometime even take a fishing pole for a ride or see how many different kinds of plants I can find on a hike. As long as I can get outside with Joe, I’m happy.”

Specimens make their way home to the museum, where we assure they’re bone dry, flat as a pancake, and have been frozen twice to get rid of any pests. They then find their way into the nimble hands of Cynthia Pagesh, our resident plant mounter. Cynthia has luckily been able to do some mounting both onsite and at home over this past year, really honing her craft. She uses Elmer’s glue, dental and sculpture tools, linen tape, and a paintbrush akin to a magic wand: transforming roots, stems, flowers, and fruits into scientific and artistic renderings on an 11.5x16.5” archival herbarium sheet.

Mounting can be very detailed and challenging: wrangling a dry and brittle rare plant you want to salvage every detail from, or an oversized leaf ‘how-will-this-all-fit?’ ordeal, or finessing a delicate petal that glue is especially heavy on. Bulky bits, crumbly bits, spiky no nos: Cyn handles them all. Her work is just as much an art as it is a science. When she’s not making masterpieces, she’s probably doing something with plants.

Cyn, where can we find you on a Saturday?

“You can find me on Saturdays helping prune young trees in my community, collecting wildflower seeds or in my kitchen making preserves or homemade pasta noodles.  I volunteer in vegetable, herb and flower gardens.  I have a pollinator garden at home and raise Monarch caterpillars.  I tag and release them to migrate south.

There are lots of Community Science projects for people of all ages: ask someone to help you find one related to a subject you have an interest in.  I have an interest in pollinators including bees.  I participate in a Community Science Project every Summer that counts types of bees on certain plants when they bloom.”

After another stint in the freezer for bugs-be-gone, it’s everyone’s favorite day: Picture Day! Each plant: sturdy and mounted, all data logged and super official, makes their way to the imaging station to spend some time under the bright lights. Since 2018, students, interns, and volunteers have lovingly held these plants’ hands as they get their close ups. We take high definition photos using a specially made lightbox and special software.

While this is part of a limited project, called the Mid-Atlantic Megalopolis, we are still hard at work going into our last year of the time we were given. This past schoolyear and summer, former Pitt student, Iliana DiNicola was taking pictures for us on the regular while also interning with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. She just graduated and I’m excited to hear what she does on her Saturdays in the future.

Iliana, where can we find you on a Saturday?

“I just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Environmental Studies, and I am now on the lookout for any jobs related to the environment back in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. I am interested in working with anything from sustainability, to policy or political work, or maybe even something more related to ecology and outdoor work.

On a Saturday, I am definitely helping clean my house since I am a semi-clean freak, I love to go hiking if the weather isn't too hot, enjoy drawing and working on any art projects, or work on my future hydroponics garden.

As somebody who interned for Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, I highly recommend participating in any camps or activities the conservancy has to offer. It was super fun learning more about Pittsburgh's history and ecology and getting to teach kids about these topics, alongside participating in fun outdoor activities.”

Next up, Sarah Williams, the Curatorial Assistant in the Section of Botany, is overseeing the digitization project, morphing the photos from raw camera files into smaller files for sharing and detailed files for archival storing using Adobe Lightroom. She takes the images from the newly photographed specimens and makes sure they get uploaded onto the Mid-Atlantic Herbaria Consortium’s website to be shared far and wide across the world.

There is also a lot she does in sorting, filing, and taking care of the specimens as well. She does a bunch of scheduling, hiring, and training of work study students, interns, and volunteers. We consider her a jack of all trades.

Sarah, where can we find you on a Saturday?

“Most weekends I work with a local catering company called Black Radish Kitchen. I usually end up serving delicious vegetable and farm focused meals at least one day a week, commonly Saturdays because they’re prime for celebrations. The re-start up since the pandemic has been cautious, and I’m excited to be amongst people and help them to make mouthwatering memories again. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for over a decade and the skills I’ve learned doing it as well as the friends I’ve made are matchless. It has a big piece of my heart.

I also moved into a new house this year about five minutes from my mom, so if I’m not running to say hi to her and ‘borrow’ some groceries, I’m doing laundry, dusting and yardwork… but only after I sleep in, eat some delicious breakfast with my partner, and hang out with our two cats, Santi and Gil.”

Fright of His Life

@indiavolojones Boom! I’ve done the thing!

Barely two months since they popped up, and Cyn's already letting some of their more theatrical traits out, much to the amusement of the House of Lamentation. Well, most of the House, Samson corrects. Their love of a certain musical is one of those small things that didn't get revealed by choice, however. How they revel in it now. "I want freedom, but to get my freedom, I need 'em, to get a living person to say my name~" Samson and Mammon, "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice?," right on cue. They've had this song on repeat all morning while they cook breakfast, so he's become familiar enough with the lyrics by this point. "I know that beggars can't be choosers, but did they have to be such losers~ Both of them are deathly dull and lame!~" Beel joins in this time, "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice." He's already finished the food they brought from work. "Dear God slash Satan," here they point their spatula at the mentioned brother, who raises an eyebrow over his book, "why'd you send these bed-wetters!" They return to their pancakes, doing a little dance while they can't move from the stove. "Even like a tax attorney would've been better!" The music cuts off, but Cyn' pays no mind. "Somebody with gravitas, somebody to fear-" Lucifer clears his throat, wearing the closest to 'casual' he'd probably ever be seen in outside his bedroom. "Some of us are trying to enjoy their days off, without their sleep being interrupted by your caterwauling." Cyn' flips the pancakes before putting them on top of the growing stack, no longer singing, dancing, or even humming. It's quite conversations while Cyn' finishes cooking, with only one loud "BEEL!" from them when he tries to grab the bacon off the griddle.

It's after everyone’s started eating that Cyn' speaks to Lucifer. "You know, that song you cut off's from a musical. A Broadway production, even. And,” they wave their fork at the eldest, “you interrupted a soliloquy." Oh no. They get a sharp grin. Please don’t- "So you're the one who's being rude." Without taking a breath, "Mammon I will give you my paycheck from Hell's Kitchen if you get me out of here now." "Got it!" He quickly scoops them up and bolts out the door. Great. Asmo looks the very picture of offended, Beel’s grabbing the food from their plate, Levi’s snickering, Belphie has this mix of shock and delighted awe on his face, Satan’s coughing, and Lucifer is taking that about as well as you’d expect. “MAAAAAMMOOON!”

Mammon comes back Cyn’-less, saying they were able to crash at work. “Yeah, apparently they’re one of the few who actually come back on a regular basis. Guess that has some perks with the boss.” It’s nearly dinner, and still, no one’s seen them but Beel. “They said ‘hi’ when they came in.” That was about an hour ago, according to Beel’s stomach. So Samson searches the house. Not in the kitchen, the living room, the library, the planetarium, the attic room, the theater, or the music room. Guess he’ll check their room again. Their D.D.D. is still there, playing thunderstorms. There’s a new sound, maybe? Is it coming from the closet? He opens the door, and finds Cyn’ sitting in a ball on the floor. “Everything alright?” Samson sits just outside the closet, facing the door. They shrug. “Just... Had a bad night at work, that’s all. Ran outta energy in the middle of my shift.” Oh. Well, “That sucks.” “Yes, it does. Boss let me take a break though, once I explained what happened.” He nods. “And it got me thinkin’, how it always feels like I’m performing, even when I’m supposed ta be relaxing.” They start drawing in the carpet. “How hard it is, pretending to be normal. Making sure I’m making eye-contact, that I’m not ‘acting out,’ that I’m paying attention to what people are saying.” Samson notices someone’s stopped in the hall, and silently shoos them away. “Just sayin’ I know what it’s like, to make yourself boring on purpose.” Cyn’ adds a dot to whatever they drew. “You don’ gotta do everything yourself, Samson. I can take care of myself.” He honestly doubts that, and he really feels bad for doing so, but if hunkering in their closet is their knee-jerk reaction to being overwhelmed, then how did they survive in the Devildom as long as they claim?

looking back at it now, i definitely went out a lot more compared to previous years LOL i had some struggles in january, and at multiple points in my life i blamed myself for being ungrateful, for seeking more when i already had so much in life compared to other people. my friends were there for me and i wouldnt have been able to live through it without them. then again, during reading break in february, i got myself into the same hot mess and i was sad about it for a week and i blamed myself for getting so attached so quickly. because of these experiences, my expectations were v low and i didnt really expect anything when i talked to jyang, what they say really is true, you get it the moment you stop seeking for it. it comes and find you (: the 3 most important that happened this year is burbur, co op job & me getting more comfortable around doggs; this is a big deal !! i actually like cuddling dogs and i feel less scared of them as long as i have some time to get used to them!! im proud of myself for making progress with my phobia! after i started my co op job, bc i didnt have a lot to do, i felt like i wasnt actively contributing to my workplace and that i was very useless. i still feel the same way now, but i think i am slowly getting used to it. thankfully, my coworkers are VERY nice and i enjoy working around them. while i did not get a different position for january, im still grateful that i got an extended placement. nonetheless, meeting with the different PIs and sumeet pointed me in the right direction of looking for nserc / volunteering opportunities when i do go back to school. AND ofc burbur! im grateful that we were able to be there for each other for the past 8 months, both the ups and downs and i am so so thankful that we’re understanding and patient with each other, as we help each other learn along the way and help each other become a better version of ourselves. this companionship is better than i have asked for and i always remind myself to focus on the important things rather than the minor inconveniences. this year, in terms of fitness goals, ive been doing really well before asia. but ever since i came back, it all went downhill and i gained back all the weight that i lost this year year LOL so in 2020, one of my biggest goal is to eat healthy again, and workout more consistently. getting a job in sept kinda interfered with my progress too, bc i was so tired after work, even when i wasnt doing anything and i stressed eat bc i felt terrible. a lot of diff factors made me feel super stressed, and the fact that i wasnt eating clean / exercising reguarly made me feel worse about the whole situation ): so in 2020, maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be one of my top priorities and gifting myself a healthy body is one of greatest things i can do for myself. this also contributed to the lack of journalling near the end of the year, it felt like bc i wasnt doing the things i was “supposed to do”, i just felt so bad whenever i couldnt tick off that particular habit whenever i fill in my trackers. but tonight, i watched this video and it talked about habits should be for awareness, not for self-hate or self-loathing. this is something that i need to keep in mind. ever since april really, the issue of leaving my house and meeting up with my friends have always stressed me in fear of dealing with passive aggressiveness with my mom lool everytime i get inviited to plans, i just get anxiety about having to tell her about it LOL and even when im out, having a msg/ call for her freaks me out in fear that she will get mad at me for being home late and etc and fifi really woke me up with her words, i should just care less LOL i need to stop caring so much about what she thinks, bc at the end of the day, this IS my life and if i never make any changes, i will never be able to grow and be independent. i think this pree much sums up all my events and emotions in 2019, the last year of the 2010s. in the next decade, a lot of things will happen as i will be in my 20s - 30s, where new opportunities will arise, and graduate uni, do my masters, find a job, maybe even marry and move out LOL the 2020s will definitely be an impt decade, but just for next year i want to:

1. understand that i am old enough to make choices, and in general, care less about what she thinks

2. at the same time, i want to appreciate and be grateful for what my mom, dad and annie have done for me; a lot of the times, i feel like i take them for granted just bc i know they will always be there for me and this is not how you should treat your biggest supporters

3. trust that everything will workout in the end, while you may not be able to envision what you career / life would be like when youre 30, you can definitely take small steps and move towards your goal

4. be mindful of what i eat and exercise regularly (4x hiit & cardio a week) ; treats & sweets in moderation; use those habit trackers for awareness, not for self-loathing / self-hate

5. create art regularly, read more and at least do 5 duolingos every week! 

every year, time just seems to go by faster and faster and i feel scared at times. as i type this, theres only 8 minutes left of this decade LOL so in 2020, continue to live in the moment, be present, cherish those that are around you, and have faith that everything will come together, one piece at a time. at the same time, always rmb that you can make small changes to be a better version of yourself, whenever & however you want and this is the 1 thing that other people can’t stop you from doing!

With everything going on in the simblr community that is shitty, I thought it would be nice to get away from that and send out some love to my favorite simblrs. This is by no means a complete list-- I love everyone I follow and all of my followers. This is just simblrs I've talked to a lot or am close with, or those whose stories or posts I follow closely.

@camisimblr is one of the most friendly, funny, and down to earth person I’ve ever met, and the first person I truly talked to regularly on here. She’s working through her Not So Berry challenge and is currently on Gen 3. I really recommend checking it out, especially as the captions on her gameplay are always class. If that’s not your thing, no worries! She also has a new simblr game going on where she presents a sim and gives clues as to the parents for anyone to guess! If that’s not your thing, follow her anyways because shes an amazing person!

@simvanglade is AN ABSOLUTE RIOT. She is so funny and so kind to everyone (except Peppa.) She’s currently working through the Not So Berry challenge and is on Gen 1, so now’s the perfect time to quickly catch up since there’s so much more good stuff to come! Her gameplay is ace and her captions are so funny and relatable. She also has some new stuff on the way that I’M SUPER EXCITED FOR. 👀👀👀 Go drop this lady a follow (or else Peppa will come for you 🔪)

@simmingkatie is the SWEETEST human being, and she just has this natural aura of happiness around her that makes you feel right at home when you’re talking! She just finished her Pancake’s Rerun story, so it’s a great time to binge read that ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. (honestly, go read it. It’s super good.) She’s also about to start posting her Bachelorette challenge with Alexis which is sure to be a great time, and is also working on Gen 2 of the Not So Berry Challenge! Also it looks like there might be some youtube videos coming 👀 Just like the other two above, if you’re looking for humorous captions and relatable down-to-earth commentary, look no further!

@fataleromeo is one of the most caring people I’ve ever met, and spreads love wherever she goes; Her writing is phenomenal, and her commentary is witty as hell. One of the many things she’s working on currently is her Fatale legacy. Having just finished Phoenix’s generation, it’s a fantastic opportunity for new followers to go back and catch up before she starts posting Ezra. (and from her amazing writing of the past two generations, it’s obvious that she’s going to absolutely SMASH this next one!) Alongside that, she too is about to start posting her Bachelor Challenge with Gabe AND has gameplay posts of the Not So Berry challenge (she’s up to the third generation!) With so many projects going (I honestly don’t know how she does it) you’re sure to never go long without some great content from her! I also saw a post about her making a sim for the human enough challenge and saying she probably won’t get around to it, but we can all hope, right? 👀

@weicyn / @cyanidelegacy I swear one of these days I’m going to go back to and read your stories from the beginning. This girl has SUCH GOOD STORY POSTS and if you’re looking for something to binge read, the Cyanide Legacy should definitely be a go-to! Along with her phenomenal writing, Cyn also has such a good and caring heart, and will help you wherever she possibly can! Go follow her!

@erosims is so supportive and helpful, I don’t know what I’d do without them if I have issues with either things in my day to day life or my cc. They’re also an amazing mod and cc creator themselves, along with reblogging others’ creations! If you’re looking for practical and incredibly useful mods and cc with a user who is incredibly caring and supportive, you’ve found the blog you’re seeking!

@skullysimblr is a blogger I look up to immensely. They’ve made it to !generation 9! in the Not So Berry challenge, and have hilarious captions to boot! If you have some time and want to binge some awesome content, I recommend going and showing them some love-- trust me, they’ll return it!

@toffeetip super kind and funny, and has amazing screenshots and gameplay posts, as well as releasing amazing cc! Just a very well-rounded blog that has everything you could ask for, tbh, along with a blogger that spreads love like crazy!

@starry-eyed-simss is currently writing Iorie Hills in her legacy challenge, as well as an AU for Strangerville. If you haven’t yet seen enough gameplay for the pack, I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY (even if you have seen enough, you really won’t regret checking this out.) Iorie is an incredibly interesting and fun character and if you haven’t yet started reading that legacy-- oof. get over the their blog and catch up. I admit unashamed that I wait for the updates because I am THAT into both of these stories.

@liliumpixels is so sweet and so supportive to everyone she comes in contact with, and it’s the perfect time to follow her since she’s just starting out! I can’t wait to see everything she does!

@airedalerd is super funny, super nice, and super empathetic. This girl has so much heart in her. She’s just starting Secret’s of Brimwater, a mystery story that I’m so excited to see unfold. If you aren’t already, go follow; you definitely don’t want to miss anything she posts!

@liliithvatore really funny, stands up for what she believes in, and has a great story going with the vatores! her posts are so pretty and it makes following the story even better. also runs a great storytellers discord which is very helpful and friendly if thats your thing! If you are going to follow her, make sure you read the byf on the right side of her blog!

@carpakoi is honestly someone I look up to a lot. She takes everything that gets thrown her way in stride and stands up for what she believes in. She has great gameplays, great edits, and great storylines. The editing this girl can do? Stunning. Follow her!

@leafvy is a LIFESAVER with her name lists, and is so supportive of people in this community. Also, her edits? Fire. She’s going to start posting the Human Enough challenge soon, so follow her to keep on top of that!

@ounl is honestly just one of my favorite blogs? such a strong person who showers the community with love, makes great edits, makes AMAZING sims, and is just really true to himself which makes me really look up to him.

@cassgoths get it while its hot, who knows when this blog will be wrongfully terminated again 🔪staff🔪  But in all seriousness, they have such great story posts and you can tell they really put love into everything they do.

@roseiio has an amazing style of blog and editing, and has made quite a few challenges (my fave is obvs the reddit one) that bring the community together. also, they react to anon hate in the best ways, and just seem like a really funny person in general?? 10/10 blog

Littles Learning How to Talk More

This story is for @maiuoart and myself reguarding my starry moon dragon Littles.  Enjoy everyone. 

“CAN YOU SAY CYAN?” Cyan was sitting with Littles while Cake and Sweetness were off in the kitchen making cookies and getting dinner ready. “SAY “CY” AND THEN “AN”. SEE CYAN.” “Cyn.” Littles looked up at him curiously watching him giggle and laugh at her first attempt making her giggle and laugh and gasp. Which had him rolling. Taking her hands in his own he cooed at her happily “CY,” he said slowly for her “AN.” He finished watching her with stars in his eyes. “Cy….an.” she repeated blinking looking at up at him. “THAT’S GREAT LITTLES NOW PUT IT TOGETHER. SAY CY AN, CYAN.” Using his pointer phalanges to demonstrate smushing the letters together. “Cyan.” She blinked looking up at him waiting to see if she got it right. “YOU ARE SO SMART LITTLES, JUST LOOK AT YOU GO, GOING TO RULE THE REALM AT THIS PACE.” He smiled at her making her beam. “Cyan, Cyan, Cyan….Sneak bro, Blitz.” She gasped out and giggled and then glared at him. “WHO… TAUGHT YOU HOW TO GLARE?” Cyan laughed looking at her making her laugh and kick her legs back and forth. She had woken up and immediately had gone outside to play with the animals running around. Thankfully several of the early rises were up and keeping an eye on her. She had stayed in skeletal form all day. Fed pancakes with fruit and milk squealing and gasping the entire time as she watched her brothers lazily eat their food. Even had a good helping of lasagna for lunch and at three baths. Now she was being taught more words. Mostly names for now. Nuzzling against her head Cyan purred out loudly making her purr back in response. “NOW LET’S TRY CROW. CAN YOU SAY CR… OH?” “Crrrr OH!” she gasped out and giggled. “THAT’S GREAT, OH LITTLES YOU’RE DOING SO WELL NOW PUT THEM TOGETHER, SAY CROW.” “Crow…. Crow…. CROW…. “, she bounced around in his lap giggling and purring at the same time. Hugging her gently but firmly he kissed the top of her head “SUCH A SMART LITTLE GIRL JUST LIKE YOUR MOMMA. YOU’RE DOING SO WELL.” The entire rest of the day is Cyan just teaching Little’s everyone’s names. Playing around and video recording every moment as HS is lazily standing around recording all the words she’s spoken so far and all the playing she’s doing. Her playing with Erebus and Indigo yelling in the background that his training is not done. Or her playing with Shou and cooing baby Tei. It’s when HS is about to put up the camera that Littles looks around with a questioning look on her face “Blitz?” she askes as if he should be there. “Nah, Lil lady, Blitz ain’t here taday.” HS told her picking her up and using his magic to float the camera. She glared at the magic holding the camera and pointed at it “Sneak bro!” remember how Hal did the same thing. Looking at him she yawned a bit and nuzzled against him. HS snrked and shook his head “Ya can see ya Sneak bro n’ Blitz lata.” A chuckle coming out of him as he turned off the camera and handed it back to Cyan who took plenty of pics and then without missing a beat sent the whole video and all the pics of her playing with Erebus, Shou, and the other animals, cooing at baby Tei to Blitz. With the message “LITTLES LOVES YOU. ENJOY MAGNIFICENT BLITZ AND TELL HAL LITTLES LOVES HIM TOO!” Sending off the picture he went off with letting littles play around as he looked at the grounds. “HMM, MAYBE CROW SHOULD MAKE A PARK FOR THE CHILDREN?” Nodding his head, he went off letting Indigo watch Littles for a bit as he got her pj’s out and went to check on the nursery. They still didn’t have many child outfits for Littles and that’s why Crow had taken off to go find clothes or buy some. For the rest of the day he’d let her play and relax as he just helped get stuff ready.
