Yk what: here's my cyberpunk OC lore cuz I love him lots, anxiety be damned. Most of the 2070 mess comes from my first CybRED campaign, the rest just fitted together like a puzzle the more I kept writing LMAO

— 2070

Netrunner part of a private task force against cyberpsychos (Mar-S), Jay comes from an old nomad clan that fell apart during his teen years. He ended up in NC shortly after that, and there he met his best friend (and doc) Harlow (@plasticsadstick's OC). Before joining the task force in 2070 (together with Harls), he worked for a few years for NCPD and C-SWAT, given his drive to be useful and help others — same drive that made him quit both jobs, given the insane corruption of that system. Already in Mar-S team during the Unification War, he didn't stay there long enough either, quitting after a last, almost-suicidal mission, that damaged him permanently: he ended up with a fucked-up shard in his head that haunts him with not-so-kind voices, almost killed him, and yet he managed to save his teammates and avoid the collapsing of one hell of a breach in the Blackwall of last years — NetWatch had to be involved to solve the shit as well. After that, he just wanted some peace of mind.

— 2071 / 2075

After meeting other runners (including Kiwi, who he has.. things going on) and various mercs, and having lost contact with the whole Mar-S, he starts to work alone and tries to make a name for himself in NC. He doesn't care about fame and glory tho, he is still moved by his strong need for justice: that's why he spends most of the time between 2071 and '74 hunting down many people involved in abuse and SA cases, moved mostly by the discovery of Kiwi's past. This leads to J getting along with the Mox and many dolls around NC. Beside his revenge hunting, he still takes different gigs around town, proving once again his incredible netrunning skills that grant him quite a reputation especially around the Afterlife circles — working also with Rogue.

— 2076 / 2085

After the death of many friends and especially of his beloved Kiwi, it's a fast downfall. He starts digging around the dirt of corporations, killing the wrong people and fucking around with the Blackwall as well, which only gets him the unwanted attentions of both corpos, pigs and NetWatch. He gets tracked down by them around 2080 after many failures, but instead of getting zero'ed, he gets recruited by them — if you can't beat someone, may as well drag 'em by your side. As if shit couldn't get worse, given the death of So Mi of some years prior (King of Cups + Don't Fear the Reaper endings) and the desperate research for a replacement by president Myers herself, in 2082 J ends up forced to work for the government, against his own morals, against all the promises of a new life of years prior — you can leave the corporation, but that life will never leave you, right? — all to protect someone, the only person he still cares about in the City.

That year Jay Welles disappeared without a trace from NC, believed dead. And that year the NUSA gained a new, deadly puppet to use.

Completing a character sheet for Cyberpunk Red (my first ever TTRPG) and it feels like completing an application form.

You can't trust Alt.

I know, I know. Big claim. But it's the truth. The cold, hard truth. We know that Soulkiller makes an engram copy of you. And we know that the data can be presented with very high fidelity because we and Johnny explicitly experience each other's lives in flashback. We know that Johnny isn't... right. We know - for an indisputable canon fact - that the Johnny we're with isn't the Johnny, merely a version of Johnny. We know that Arasaka didn't pull Johnny's body out of the tower - that was Samantha Stevens. We also strongly suspect that Sam's friend Angel is a clone body built to match the original Alt and uploaded with her original consciousness. And we know that Angel has Johnny's original body. Which begs the question of who the fuck Alt actually is. And who the fuck Johnny is. But, more importantly, it raises this question: By the time that V, Johnny, and Alt meet in Arasaka, all the pieces required to save both V and Johnny are there. Because Alt has a copy of your engram. And you have the complete project files for the Relic Program. We know that V's body gets out, even in the solo ending. V survives. Or Johnny survives. Either way, they can get away. And we know that Alt only used us as a Trojan to get in and ruin the system. That she could have Soulkilled us at any point, and harboured us beyond the Blackwall. So the only reason we're in that tower is because Alt wants something else. Once we have the Relic plans, all that Alt needs to do is Soulkill V, klep a clone body off of Biotechnica - which Johnny is more than capable of - and then manufacture a copy of the Relic. And there's no limits to the number of people who'd be willing to be the first to bring the Relic to market. Alt could have saved us. Could have saved both of us. But she doesn't. Never mind how Gary keeps mentioning the lizard men from Alpha Centauri. A secret cabal trying to control the world, and tied to Arasaka, and which would get filtered through his head as "Alpha Centauri"? I kinda wonder if it's "Alt Cunningham." Just errant food for thought.

Getting the big sad when a game presents an extremely cool thing in its fiction and then the mechanical implementation of it is boring.

Like, take Cyberpunk RED for example. That TTRPG now has a branded AAA video game and an anime series, and you would think that would help me onboard players to the tabletop game. "Go watch Edgerunners and you'll know what the game world is." Except that if I do that, my players are going to come to the table itching to get their hands on a Sandevistan. If you haven't seen the anime, in it, the Sandevistan is a neural implant that massively increases someone's speed and reaction time, resulting in this:

But when they get it in the game, it does this:

So actually if a player has seen the anime I am just setting them up to be hugely disappointed by what the mechanics do for them.

Probably this is exacerbated by the fact that the game and anime came out after the TTRPG, so in the tabletop design the sandy didn't really have something to live up to. But honestly, I don't believe there was ever a point when a +3 to initiative if you activate the thing in advance wasn't boring. This isn't even a game where you reroll initiative each round, if you don't activate this before a fight starts, it's useless.

I went as my V from cyberpunk this Halloween! Which is different for me cause this is my first fem costume ever (even though my V is non binary and has a dick🤣) I did the vest myself(I’ll take pics and post them) and the skippy is a collectible I bought off of CDPR! I’m actually hyped on how this turned out and the editing makes it look 10x cooler!
