Feels Like a Duvet Day
♦ please note that any bold type navigates away to outside links. I search for appropriate information but have no affiliation with any sites chosen
Yup, cold, very wet and dark here. Ugh. We’ve ordered oil and are waiting on the delivery. Luckily at the weekend we got logs, so the Season’s inaugural fire lighting might take place later.
Chestnut logs stacked so well by OH that they look too good to disturb
The Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) was probably introduced to Britain by the Romans. It is native to Southern Europe but has now become common on light non-chalky soils throughout Britain. In Kent there are large woodlands full of Sweet Chestnut, planted for the production of hop poles used in the brewing trade. It has been grown for centuries for its edible seed – the sweet chestnut. Despite its common name it is a member of the Beech family and not the Horse Chestnut family
From Tree Guide UK
Our logs are locally sourced for growth, cutting, seasoning (two years drying out in a barn) and delivery by Gary the Log Man who told us about the Roman origins but not the bit about the Hop Poles. How serendipitous given I’ve written quite a lot about the Hop Fields we’ve walked in this year. I did know it’s a popular wood for fence posts but that was about it really and you know my fondness for a circuitous story that wraps around neatly.
He also told us about how Chestnut if cut carefully, continues to grow.
In Kent and East Sussex there are thousands of acres of chestnut coppice (see featured and last image). That means fairly uniform sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), where every 15 or 18 years the stems are all cut off to create poles mostly used for fencing materials. Chestnut is a hardwood and splits well. The cutting is done in sections (“cants”) and the corners of each section are often marked by leaving a stem which is cut at about 1.5 metres above ground level. The great benefit of this sort of woodland is that it is very productive and the trees do not need replanting after felling - the coppice just sprouts back from the same roots or “plate”

I love the kind of trivia you pick up unexpectedly and it comes in handy when we’re watching Richard Osman’s House of Games (UK programme, BBC2 at 6pm weekdays. Repeats are on Dave)
As I often say, I’m not a fan of the colder months (or when it’s very hot either to be fair) so Spring is my favourite time of year, followed by Autumn. At least Autumn brings the colours I enjoy and the curtains closed, blinds dropped, lamps on and warming casseroles that I like making and consuming. I’m a fan of comfy cushions not the just-for-show ones, and cosy blankets or throws as well.
It’s unfortunate then that I’m not a fan of very snuggly duvets or bedlinen as I get far too hot. My OH loves to be as snug as a bug in a rug and tucks himself in tightly at night whereas I navigate around the bed searching for the cool spots. Recently this has lead me to start researching woollen pillows and duvets, or at least a kind of thermos fabric that helps regulate your temperature. I haven’t reached any conclusions as yet because due to my shoulder and neck issues I’ve been doing a lot of pillow wrangling too. At the moment I’m down to one pillow, which is a fairly plump ‘Bamboo’ pillow. Apparently the bamboo bit is the casing and they’re actually filled with memory foam, which I imagined I’d reject out of hand as getting too hot - well, so I’ve read on mattress reviews, but so far at least the pillow seems to keep cool and give the right sort of support for a side sleeper. I’m not ready to invest just yet though and I probably will plump for wool in the end.
I’m going to look for Alpaca wool fillings for duvets and when I got this photo in my In Box, wondered if I might even pick up some test patches of Llama wool by stealthy means 😉 You don’t get little noggins of their wool deposited on the fences like you do from sheep though.
Guest Photographer S from next door who saw this pair looking like bookends and thought we’d like to see them too. Thanks S
What is the difference between llamas and alpacas? Llamas were raised for centuries in South America as beasts of burden; Alpacas have been bred for thousands of years for fine fibre
Yesterday’s chore that kept me busy was a trip out to visit the Dentist. I only have a once a year check up and we’d deferred when they reopened after lockdown because we knew loads of people were pretty desperate for appointments. As it happened OH then had a couple of ‘incidents’ and we knew he’s going to need a bit of remedial work. He was concerned about going but I put my foot down. I’m Stitch in Time Monitor in our house. The Covid-19 prevention measures are all a bit odd, especially being instructed to swallow your rinsing water. Apparently if anyone was to spit it out the personnel are required to vacate the room for an hour afterwards and then clean down again.I had a thorough check up, nothing required and OH has to go back at the end of next month. He was made to feel very comfortable though and it wasn’t as worrying as he’d imagined it may be in these strange times.
We were lucky that unlike today where the weather looks set, we were out during a dry spell, although the fields are very, very water logged around these parts and the ‘River’ down at Linnet Bridge, which is usually no more than a deep stream, is positively bubbling and raging as it rushes along high at the banks. This is the spot where the lane twists and turns and the route to the Hop Field lies. It’s a permanent flood danger down there - permanent in as much as there are hinged signs for us to let down as necessary.
Because there was a dry spell I nipped out and picked some fresh herbs and the one remaining Rose. I’ve already dried plenty of Bay leaves and the Sage is growing like a forest so I don’t need to gather any of that as yet. The Parsley’s very sparse now so I left that be.
From our left to right. Thyme; Rosemary; Chives; Susie rose; Oregano
I’ve never been one for growing flowers in our garden but after our visit to Bateman’s I have loads of flower photographs to use in a new Blog and it’s made me wish I’d got them growing in our garden. We’ve had hardly any Rabbits up here since the Spring babies, they seem to have dispersed into the woods, so maybe next year it’d be ok to try? Anyway when I get around to writing that Blog up there are some very pretty pics to brighten up my text and it’ll be an antidote to talk of snuggly wool and lamplight.
BIRDING NOTE:
The Long Tailed Tits have been passing through today, I’ve seen lots of Nuthatch of various sizes, their buff coloured breasts are looking much deeper and they seem to have had a fantastic breeding year here. There have been loads of Blue Tits, House Sparrows, Starlings and of course a couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers who stay for ages.
Grooming in the Rain
Long Tailed Tits (above) and Nuthatch (below) from last week
This Nuthatch has its normal breast colour, not the deep rust I’m seeing more of late.
