As per the report, 33.4 million people faced displacements in the world due to conflicts and disasters.  CSIR-CMERI in Durgapur (West Bengal) develops a low-cost robotic device HCARD for healthcare workers treating COVID-19 affected while maintaining social distancing.  Tripura has developed a mobile COVID-19 sample collection kiosk to collect samples from suspected coronavirus cases without having any physical contact. A three-wheeler heavy-duty auto rikshaw has been transformed into a COVID-19 sample collection kiosk by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).  Shiv Das Meena has been appointed as chairman and managing director of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).  The Australian government is looking to make travel exemptions for the Indian team’s tour Down Under later this year to save the Australian cricket board. Cricket Australia, which has laid off almost 80 percent of its employees, is under huge financial pressure in the wake of COVID-9 pandemic.  Scientists from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) have developed a “Berberine” based Alzheimer inhibitor.  Germany has banned the Hezbollah organization, designating it is a terrorist organization. The Interior Ministry of the country announced on April 30, 2020. The United States and Israel have been pushing Germany to ban the organization.  The United States has announced an additional grant worth $3 million to help India combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The US aid agency (USAID) had announced a grant worth $2.9 million to India on April 6, 2020, to support its efforts to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.  Nagaland has imposed a COVID-19 cess on diesel and petrol, becoming the first state to introduce such a tax in India. Nagaland has imposed a Rs 5 per liter COVID-19 cess on diesel and Rs 6 per liter cess on petrol and other such liquid fuel.  Pakistani cricketer Umar Akmal was banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on April 27, 2020, for three years. The ban has been imposed on the Pakistani batsmen for failing to report corrupt approaches ahead of the country’s T20 premier league this year.

The US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) released its 2020 annual report What the report says? The USCIRF listed India under “Country of Particular Concern” on religious freedom for the first time since 2004 What is US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF)? USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan U.S. federal government commission It is first time in the world which releases its kind of report It is dedicated to defending the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad. The commission makes policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and Congress. Notable points of the report? India categorised as a “Tier 2 country” in last year’s listing What are Tier 2 countries? Tier 2 countries are those countries engaged in serious violations or tolerated by the government  and characterized by at least one of the elements of systematic, ongoing, and egregious. This is the first time since 2004 that India has been placed in the “Country of Particular Concern” category. India is placed alongside countries, including China, North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. 14 countries designated as “countries of particular concern” (CPCs) because their governments engage in or tolerate “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations.” Nine countries earlier in the list of December 2019 are also included those are  Burma China Eritrea Iran North Korea Pakistan Saudi Arabia Tajikistan Turkmenistan Along with these five other countries are India Nigeria Russia Syria Vietnam What are the Reasons shown to downgrade India? India enacted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which provides a fast track to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan already residing in India which act as a bias towards one particular community The unilateral abrogation of Article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and activities aftermath India used its strengthened parliamentary majority to institute national-level policies violating religious freedom across the country, especially for Muslims The national and various state governments also allowed nationwide campaigns of harassment and violence against religious minorities to continue with impunity, and engaged in and tolerated hate speech and incitement to violence against them US government’s action on the report’s recommendation: In 2005, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who was at the time the Chief Minister of Gujarat was censured by the USCIRF. The commission had recommended sanctions against him for the 2002 riots and the U.S. government had subsequently cancelled his visa. India’s response: India has objected to the commission’s biased and tendentious comments against it.
