Obscure Animation Subject #81: Cupcake & Dino: General Services
Originally scheduled for posting on Twitter a week ago but couldn’t because of horrific TOS update, especially the rule about banning fam accounts!
Anyways, this is a Canadian-Brazilian created and directed by Pedro Eboli, airing on Teletoon in Canada and Disney XD in Brazil. In the United States, the show was originally released on Netflix, and was released for two seasons of 26 half-hours of two segments each from July 27, 2018 to May 3, 2019.
The series follows the life of Cupcake and Dino, two brothers who strive to make a name for themselves in the General Services (odd jobs) business.
Cupcake & Dino is one of those rare shows that manages to nail its premise with precision and confidence whilst managing to appeal to both adults and children. Although the episodic content and strong thematic core is geared predominantly toward a younger clientele, the goofy, cleverly written humor and varied episodes make it just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids making for quite the enthralling watch.
In many ways Cupcake & Dino draws inspiration from SpongeBob SquarePants, right down to the blend of hand-drawn animation and live-action. Cupcake & Dino keep up the amusing anecdotes right through to the final episode and there’s plenty of laughs waiting for those who can get accustomed to the admittedly jarring first 10 minutes or so. While most of the humour relies on goofy, physical humour and slapstick, Cupcake & Dino subverts expectations with a couple of cleverly placed jokes that feel solely intended for adults without the usual crudeness that seems to be a staple in adult animation.
The art is well drawn too with the backgrounds sufficiently detailed thanks to thin outlines and a varied color palette. The characters themselves are nicely animated too and are graced with enough personality and character development to make for quite the surprising watch. Seeing Dino try to regain confidence after losing his headband or watching Cupcake show empathy to fellow sweet treat Muffin are little touches that just help to really flesh out the characters and give them some much needed depth which is surprising given the show is geared toward kids.
This is the sort of show you’d skip by without a second thought unless you’ve got kids but you really owe it to yourself to give this one a go. At its heart, its cleverly written, the animation is stunning and the humor is hilarious. It won’t be for everyone and the humor is a little subjective at times, especially given this is tailored toward children, but if you give it a go you may just find Cupcake & Dino an interesting surprise.

What makes you want to create a lot of Sonic fanart for your Christian/non Christian art works? If I may hazard a guess, you seem quite fond of the series, what got you into it, then?
I'm torn between saying, "I suppose I'm quite fond of it," and "not really," even though it has clearly dominated my creative endeavors.
As for the history:
IN THE DAYS OF YORE, the lockdown during the COVID pandemic in 2020, I had gotten into watching the same show on Netflix (Cupcake & Dino: General Services, if you're interested) but after the umpteenth rewatch, I was getting weary of it. At the time, Netflix had recently added Sonic X to their catalogue. I had watched it a little when I was young, though not necessarily a fan of Sonic, so I thought I'd go for it. This led me down a rabbit hole, to looking at Sonic on tumblr, to wondering about the character Silver, to watching gameplays on YouTube, to reading the comics online. The lockdown also just led to me having more time to draw, so y'know. I was drawing Sonic characters a lot.

Cupcake and Dino - General Services!!!
It’s a fun show. Check it out :). I decided to draw this because I would like to make a proper piece of fan art of it, but am unsure of the pose/expression/composition for it. Here are some doodles for fun.

Okay, listen up B99 fans
If you are in need of something to fill the B99 void while we wait for s6 then I have something for you.
The Netflix show, “Cupcake and Dino - General Services” is the solution. Although it is a cartoon show, the level of comedy and concept it basically the same. Basically, if Jake and Holt opened a general services company while they were in Florida, then it would be like this show.
Dino is Jake, the child-like one who loves literally everything. He also sings random songs a lot.
And Cupcake is Holt, the kinda serious but has a soft side, and is the older, in charge one.
So yeah! I thouroughly reccommend watching this show! You won’t regret it!
