Smash Mouth - All Star 1999
"All Star" is a song by the American rockband Smash Mouth, released as the first single from their second studio album, Astro Lounge (1999). It was one of the last tracks to be written for Astro Lounge, after the band's record label Interscope requested more songs that could be released as singles. In writing it, guitarist Greg Camp drew musical influence from contemporary music by artists like Sugar Ray and Third Eye Blind, and sought out to create an "anthem" for outcasts. In contrast to the more ska punk style of Smash Mouth's debut album Fush Yu Mang (1997), the song features a more radio-friendly style.
It received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its musical progression from Fush Yu Mang as well as its catchy tone. It was nominated for the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards. Subsequent reviews from critics have regarded "All Star" favourably, with some ranking it as one of the best songs of 1999. The song charted around the world, ranking in the top 10 of the charts in Australia, Canada, and on the US Billboard Hot 100, while topping the Billboard Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 charts.
The song's accompanying music video features characters from the 1999 superhero film Mystery Men, which itself prominently featured "All Star". The song became ubiquitous in popular culture following multiple appearances in films, most notably in DreamWorks Animation's 2001 film Shrek. It received renewed popularity in the 2010s as an internet meme and has ranked as one of the most-streamed rock songs from 2017 to 2021 in the US. In June 2019, the music video was remastered in high definition and received subtitles in commemoration of its 20th anniversary. By that point, it had received over 219 million views on Youtube. In 2020, The New York Times listed the song as #1 in their top ten climate change songs.
"All Star" received a total of 90,9% yes votes!

Not a Transformers post but Hozier released his album and no I’m not sane or okay. I wanna talk about Butchered Tongue because there’s barely any discourse about it and I am absolutely inconsolable about it. While there are a lot of elements/ central themes of Irish colonization and the preservation of Irish language and inherently history/ culture with it, as a Person of Color, I was so deeply moved. It is a song of beautiful mourning, of sorrow in the blood and scars that run through the dying of or absolute death of a language. However, it is also a celebration and expression of admiration and awe over the strength and perseverance of language and those who wield it. Every verb, noun, accent, rolling of the tongue. Every simple sound, letter, article. All of it is an act of defiance of the voice to the oppressor. It is a fibre of being healing the deep wounds inflicted by the colonizer. Every utterance screams “We are here and we are moving onward even while still bleeding.” Even then, Hozier still captivated the grief that comes with the fact that…not all cultures have that. Not every community has the ability to learn their languages. Some are gone entirely. Some stopped being passed down for the sake of survival and assimilation. The anguish that comes with a bloody tongue, one that cannot speak what it was born to utter, to scream to sing…it’s a feeling difficult to put into words. To have this song in the Circle of Violence not only brings to light the physical violence against the Irish in their colonization, but the invisible consequences of such brutality on the colonized. The murders and scarring didn’t stop at flesh. Even some languages that survived didn’t escape without scars and wounds, infused with the languages of their colonizer (ex- Tagalog having pieces of Spanish in it). This was a love letter and kiss of praise yet also a funeral dirge to those wounded by colonization, and I have never sobbed so hard over a song before. It stirred such deep grief in me that I cannot explain.

I’m not sure if it’s something that’s always happened and I just didn’t notice, but all day I’ve been seeing Twitter accounts that have nothing to do with K-pop or BTS promoting, praising, or simply talking about WHO. They’re saying how incredible it is and praising Jimin to no end. These are BIG accounts about pop culture, music in general, locals basically, but they have been talking about Jimin and WHO all day. Fans of other artists have also been promoting the song and the album, and it’s beautiful to see. I don’t know how many tweets from Pop Base about Jimin I’ve seen today; it’s simply crazy but in the best way. This is the most organic reception of a song and an album that I’ve seen in a long time.
I love, love all the love and recognition Jimin is receiving. He deserves it. He deserves all of this and more.

since reader and mig r so big on music i like to think they have debates abt it sometimes 😭😭 definitely turned into an argument somehow fr 💀💀 (not a serious one thouu)
“Tyler the Creator!
“Kendrick!”
“Tyler. The. Creator!”
“Nooo, you are not listening to me! Kendrick. Lamar!”
“Tyler literally won a grammy for his IGOR album! It was considered to be the ultimate success and became top of the billboard charts!”
“But did he sit down and scored an interview with Ice Cube, DJ Yella, MC Ren?? Nope. He didn’t !”
It has been like this for twenty minutes. Which it was all started something innocent with this or that music edition, only for it leads to the two of you having a bicker on which rapper produced the best music and album,
In the kitchen. Where his frat brothers could hear.
“God, someone needs to fucking duck tape both of their mouths” Carlos groans, rubbing his face. “They’re giving me a headache”
“You know they fight over the dumbest thing? Last week was about a cereal”
“The cinnamon toast crunch and special k? Shit, and i thought my girl was insane”
“Yeah. I swear my head was about to explode” Glen shakes his head,
“I think it’s true love, to be honest” Beck chimes in, looking over at the two of you with a small smile,
You are standing behind the counter while Miguel stands in the opposite, continuing the non-stop banter.
“And as for the grammy?! Kendrick won one too for his DAMN album! So your opinion is invalid, muneca” Miguel shrugs, throwing you a winning smile,
your arms are crossed over your chest. “Nooo, it’s not! Besides, Tyler is creative”
“So is Kendrick!”
“Tyler managed to actually add a touch of jazz to his music. Makes it more smooth and tranquil like! He literally improved that all ever since the Odd Future days. You know that he got the praise for making younger audience hooked with jazz?”
“New York post! Legit called Kendrick as the greatest rapper of our generation. Black Panther soundtrack features Mr. Lamar himself. His music literally speaks so much. About politics, cultures, societies, etc. That man himself, is a masterpiece!”
“Tyler is funny. Kendrick not”
“What the- what that has to do with anything?!”
“I like funny men”
He frowns, taking an offense to that. “I’m funny”
“You’re dad jokes funny, Miggy. Tyler is stand up comedic funny. Like Dave Chapelle”
“Okay now you’re breaking my heart, muñeca”

On The Grammys (AOTY)
I've had this conversation probably 6 times this week already, and I'm going to try to get my thoughts down in one coherent place so that I can start just pointing back to this instead of yapping endlessly again.
I think more people need to be cognizant of how racism and classism play a role in how they talk about the AOTY results from this year. I wanna be clear about my bias from the start, I'm a Swiftie through and through, Fearless was literally the first album I was ever allowed to buy on my own. I loved Tortured Poets, and I still think Beyonce's win on Sunday makes sense.
I'm not going to try and convince anyone that her album was better than your fav's, and if your whole argument is "I love ___'s album so much! I think it was the best album of all time!" Then I love your enthusiasm, and I want to hear all about why you love it! Pop off! But if your thought process revolves around thoughts like "Beyonce just isn't that popular," or "people didn't really listen to Cowboy Carter like that," or "A country album? As AOTY?" Then I'd like to invite you to take just a minute to consider how racism and classism might play a hidden role in how you got to those conclusions.
(more below the cut)
I'll start with the classism bc I feel like that will somehow be the most controversial, but also the most straight forward. Cowboy Carter is a country album. Full stop. Country. Album. If you look at literally the first song on the album she explicitly talks about how hard she has had to work to have this album perceived as country. "Used to say I spoke too country, and the rejection came. Said I wasn't country 'nough. Said I wouldn't saddle up, but if that ain't country, tell me what is? Plant my bare feet on solid ground for years. They don't know how hard I had to fight for this." Beyonce is from Houston, Texas. She is southern, and she is, in this album, writing country music. Since 1969, 5 other country albums have won AOTY. A lot of people have large prejudice against country music and a lot of the time it's just thinly veiled classism.
I am literally from the deep south, but every day I get on the internet and people act like I'm supposed to be embarrassed by my love of country music (quite frankly, it happens a lot irl too). For some reason, the only acceptable verbiage to praise country is "I hate country... well, obviously except Dolly. And oh, I like Kacey Musgraves," or "actually Taylor was better when she still did country," and this or that and on and on and at what point can you just admit that you might like the genre? That maybe every single song doesn't tickle your fancy, but that maybe that's true of every single genre ever, and that maybe you shouldn't make a blanket statement of hatred about someone else's deep rooted cultural tradition! I know we're poor! I know we're not always the most educated! I know we make bad decisions sometimes! But why does that empower people to say that our cultural traditions and music are uniquely bad and mockable? Why does the poorness of our music, the instruments we traditionally had available to us, the themes that are relevant in country music make it fair game for you to make fun of to my face?
I think, perhaps, it is the world's hottest take to imply that Beyonce of all people could possibly be subjected to classism, the irony is not lost on me, but I still think it's true! I think people have a distinct prejudice against country music that is almost always based in classism and ignorance on their part (I have never had a person who 'hates all country music' be able to tell me any songs/artists they've actually listened to that solidify that hate. They can only name major artists with recent scandals, songs that got too annoyingly popular on the radio- as if that is a country specific problem, or their slew of exceptions, the good country songs).
Also, if your argument is that you don't think this was a country album because a black person wrote it I need you to fuck all the way off bc that's straight racism and you are not who I'm trying to reach with this post.
On to my second main point, which is one I hear a lot. It has to do with the alleged popularity of Cowboy Carter, especially as it relates to the other albums nominated. If you think Beyonce's album wasn't popular because it wasn't playing in the spaces you were in or around the people you hang out with, I invite you to take a second and think about who and where those people and places were. I so sincerely do not mean this as any kind of indictment on anyone, but demographic studies have shown numbers like 76% of Black Americans being Beyonce fans. Do you hang out with Black Americans? Black people? Americans? It's not shocking that her biggest demographic is the one she comes from. It's not shocking that if you're not spending your time in spaces with people who like her, that you would hear less of her music. (to be clear, every racial demographic in America polls at over 50% Beyonce fans, but I am aware than generally in other countries her biggest audiences are often black women).
SNL did a skit about this literally 8 years ago. It's called "The Day Beyonce Turned Black" and it's obviously goofy, but it really highlights my point here. Beyonce had just put out Formation, which had a lot of overt references to her blackness, and white people lost their shit about it. If you don't remember the skit, it birthed this reaction image, which you've probably seen:
Tumblr media
If you find the concept of Beyonce winning AOTY genuinely unfathomable, I invite you to consider the possibility that maybe it just wasn't for you, but that doesn't mean that it also wasn't for millions of other people. If you don't know anyone who listened to Cowboy Carter then I'd say maybe look at who might be missing in your friend group demographics because the album had a billion streams, so clearly it's hitting with somebody.
Another thing point worth mentioning bc it has come up a shocking amount to me, is that if you are one of the people who genuinely believes this win must have been part of some kind of conspiracy, but you also haven't even listened to the whole album then that's maybe also worth taking into account! Is it possible that Cowboy Carter would have been your favorite album this year too if you gave it a proper chance? Is it possible that the Grammy voters were simply making a more informed decision than you were?
Again, I just want to say that I don't want to tell you that you have to also believe that Cowboy Carter deserved Album of the Year, and not liking Beyonce doesn't make someone a racist/ classist. I just want people to be mindful of how quickly the rhetoric we use around our favs can backslide into some pretty nasty prejudices if we're not keeping an eye on our blind spots. (Hell, I'm sure I have plenty of blind spots of my own in this post, and I welcome any other thoughts/ critiques/ perspectives/ questions)

You can be mad or upset about Beyonce winning an award at the recent Grammys, without being antiblack. You can wish that someone other than Beyonce won without dismissing her credit, hard work, and dedication that she puts in (a lot of time this rhetoric is often rooted in misogynoir). Cowboy Carter doesn't have to be your favorite album for you to at least recognize the importance behind the message, which was to criticize how often American cowboy/country music culture often ignores the Black roots that created and helped establish the foundation for it (as well as how Beyonce created this album after being mistreated, something many tie to her appearance at the CMAs), without trying to be dismissive or frame it as "not even being that good", which can literally be proven otherwise with the amount of praise the album got. It's okay to be upset about your fave not winning an award, but you don't have to go out of your way to dismiss another artist's talent or say that they were less deserving.

"This is The Sound Of Something Being Born" (But What?)
Like anyone else who's listened to it, I just can't stop thinking about Warriors.
It's a dense work, and while the genderswap is probably my favourite thing about it, there's two other things about the story that I'm obsessed with. "This is the sound of something being born", and the song Same Train Home.
I've done my post on the genderswap so consider this Part 2 of my "favourite things about The Warriors" meta series.
But while the Genderswap is important to Warriors it's not the main thesis of the story.
While "This is the sound of something born" definitely is the thesis. It's in the first song, and the finale line of the last song. It's the mic-drop moment that ends the album. So what's being born exactly? And what do I have to add to this thesis?
It's important to pay attention to who says that line. Firstly, it's the guest rappers on Survive The Night. Then it's Cleon in Finale.
Cleon is definitely the heart (or soul?) of the story - she's the one who believes in Cyrus, the Warrior who has the highest emotional stakes in that dream being destroyed.
But Cyrus' dream isn't what Cleon is talking about in the finale. So... what?
Eisa Davis has already said what's actually being born in the final song... it's Hip-hop.
She calls the album "a love letter to the origins of the Hip-Hop". You can look at the plot through a lense of the Cyrus truce "enabling the the cultural conditions that created hip-hop". Like the real gang truces did in the 70s.
That's why the guest rappers are the first ones to say "this is the sound of something being born".
I basically agree with @thewhizzyhead that Luther killing Cyrus made peace between the gangs impossible. That dream is firmly dead.
The Gramercy Riffs even admit this themselves. In the end, they break the peace. In their words "Fuck the truce, and do what's right."
By the finale, the album admits that peace isn't a sustainable goal anymore. Hell, it's not even worth it. Guys like Luther need to be stopped, and peace isn't working.
And this is where I go a little bit feral because... thats what RENT says!! And like Lin Manuel Miranda, I fucking love RENT.
One of the final lines of act one of RENT is - "The opposite of war isn't peace, its creation".
Which is almost exactly the same as Warriors' final thesis. Destruction, peace, creation.
Luther wants blind destruction, Cyrus and The Riffs want peace but fail, and in the end Cleon declares - "This is the sound of something being born"
Now that's always been a great line from RENT, but not really one that the story focuses on.
Jonathan Larson was a very political writer, only really writing charged satire before RENT. But I wouldn't really call RENT politically charged . (Partly due to his editors asking him to change things)
A lot of people have praised the ending of Warriors for being hopeful - and it very much is hopeful.
But it shouldn't be? Right?
If you look objectively at the situation - Cyrus is dead, Fox and Ajax are gone, Luther destroyed any chance of peace, and you know. They're still a gang dealing with things like poverty and police violence.
Over the course of Warriors nothing actually changes for the better. In fact, things are probably worse.
The situation is hopeless - but for some reason, the characters aren't. And the narrative rewards them for this.
You see, RENT ends in the exact same way. Things get worse - some of them die, relationships get ruined, most of them don't achieve their dreams. They still all have death sentences over their head, they're still poor. Everything's the same.
But one single thing changes.
Mimi, after a indirect suicide attempt, survives. And afterwards, she wants to live.
That's the triumphant moment the show ends on. RENT is a very optimistic show, and this is how it justifies all that optimism. With just one small, insignificant thing, like hope.
The same happens with Cleon. Things get worse, but Cleon still has hope.
This is what the line "The opposite of war isn't peace, its creation" actually means. It's another example of RENT's optimism.
It's blind optimism that doesn't really make logical sense - but it ends up being proven right anyway. In a very metatextual way.
Some of the characters in RENT probably don't even survive much longer after the final song - but Mark managed to record a lot of their lives in his documentary.
The film that plays in the final moments of the play, is also subtextually - the musical RENT. Something was lost, but something was created too. RENT didn't just create itself, but half a hundred other culturally relevant musicals. Some of which you may already know - In The Heights, Hamilton, Warriors.
Watching the musical RENT over and over, you get a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. A story loops back in on itself. It's the same with Warriors.
Eventually the birth Hip-hop happened, and then Warriors. It's own self-fulfilling prophecy. This is the sound of something being born.

♤ This man is very proud to date you! He wouldn't miss an opportunity to say "hey see that person, because they are my partner", and I don't judge after all most people would never imagine that Quackity would find a partner.
♧ He would take you on all his trips, even if they were for work, and would always find space in his schedule for outings and romantic dates.
♤ Speaking of romance, this man is the last romantic on earth! He would buy you flowers, open the car door, pay the bill and praise you all the time, change my mind!!
♧ About paying for things, he would make a point of paying for absolutely everything for you, after all he came from a humble family and now that he has the means he likes to be able to give you everything you want, and he would never charge you for it.
♤ Do you like branded clothes and jewelry? Great you will have.
♧ Everyone knows that Alex loves to drive and that means long car trips wherever he goes and you will be the princess passenger.
♤ off stream game nights with just cozy games or board games alongside a nice bottle of wine.
♧ Random dates, ranging from escape rooms to a pottery class or just a night assembling legos.
♤ strange and funny couple photos, he would also have a whole album on his cell phone with photos of you distracted.
♧ You would be the funny couple, the type who posts weird photos imitating memes like this on your feed:
Tumblr media
♤ He would be your biggest fan and support you in everything, he would do everything in his power to help like if you want to study something or just start a new hobby.
♧ He is the type to show love with physical touch, he loves to hug, cuddle or just hold hands.
♤ He would show you his culture, be it Spanish words, music, food and also take you to visit Mexico.
♧ If you are also from another country, he would love to know everything about it and would make an effort to learn the language (if not English or Spanish) and would also visit.
♤ I feel like he would be a little insecure, he thinks he doesn't deserve you and that you are too much for him, so be kind to this man he is just a baby!!
♧ He would invite you to the QSMP, if you are a content creator, but even if you are not, he would place you as one of the administrators or one of the eggs.
♤ You would know the entire QSMP plot and he would ask for your opinion and ideas for the lore (if you don't participate).
♧ You're the only person he lets see him without his hat.
♤ flirting and stupid pickup lines over text messages, and if you live far away from each other you would spend 24/7 on FaceTime.
♧ Affectionate nicknames in Spanish such as Mi Corazon, Mi Amor, Mi Princesa or Mi alma.
♤ You would wear matching robes to events or on dates, he would probably have an "I Love My Girlfriend/Boyfriend" t-shirt with your picture on it that he would wear at every opportunity.
♧ You would probably be one of those people in the future who say "I'll talk to my husband, he's a lawyer".

Psy - Gangnam Style 2012
"Gangnam Style" is a K-pop song by South Korean rapper and singer-songwriter Psy, released on July 15, 2012, as the lead single of his sixth studio album, Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1. The term "Gangnam Style" is a neologism that refers to the nouveau riche lifestyles associated with the Gangnam region of Seoul, where people are trendy, hip, and exude a certain supposed class. Psy likened Gangnam to Beverly Hills, California, and said in an interview that he intended the title as a joke, claiming that he has "Gangnam Style" when everything about the song, dance, looks, and music video is far from high class.
"Gangnam Style" debuted at number one on South Korea's Gaon Chart, receiving generally positive reviews, with praise for its catchy beat and Psy's amusing dancing during live performances and in its music video. The song and its music video went viral in August 2012 and have influenced popular culture worldwide. In the US, "Gangnam Style" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, which at the time, was the highest charting song by a South Korean artist. By the end of 2012, "Gangnam Style" had topped the music charts of more than 30 countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, and the UK. The music video won Best Video at the MTV Europe Music Awards that year. On December 21, 2012, "Gangnam Style" became the first Youtube video to reach a billion views. As of January 2024, the video is the eleventh most viewed video on Youtube, having reached over 5 billion views.
Psy's dance in the music video itself became a cultural phenomenon. He revealed that South Korean fans have high expectations about his dancing, so he felt a lot of pressure. In order to keep up with those expectations, he studied hard to find something new and stayed up late for about 30 nights to come up with the "Gangnam Style" dance. Along the way, he had tested various "cheesy" animal-inspired dance moves with his choreographer Lee Ju-sun, including panda and kangaroo moves, before settling for the horse trot, which involves pretending to ride a horse, alternately holding the reins and spinning a lasso, and moving into a legs-shuffling side gallop.
"Gangnam Style" received a total of 77,2% yes votes!

‘It Was Fun to Be Wanted by Someone Like Elvis Presley’: An Interview With Darlene Love
The gifted singer reflects on Elvis’s collaborative presence and his relationship to gospel music
by MICHAEL MUSTO August 7, 2018
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The swaggering real-life Jeff Koons statue named Elvis Presley is hot again. Eugene Jarecki’s June-released documentary The King involves a road trip taken in Elvis’s old Rolls to survey his impact on the culture and determine that the American dream the singer represented is officially dead. (But oh, when it lasted!) Even darker is the film’s exploration of Presley’s appropriation of African-American culture, covering songs like “Hound Dog” — originally a non-hit for the brilliant Big Mama Thornton — and making them rock and sell. For singers like Thornton, the American dream never existed.
Enter powerhouse singer Darlene Love, who is represented on another new project, Where No One Stands Alone, a fourteen-track compilation of Elvis’s gospel work due out August 10 on RCA/Legacy. The L.A.-born minister’s daughter started singing in the church choir at ten, on the road to being scooped up by producer Phil Spector to belt hits like “He’s a Rebel,” “Today I Met The Boy I’m Gonna Marry,” and “Christmas (Baby,Please Come Home).” The lead voice of such groups as the Blossoms and Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, Love ended up working as a maid in the Eighties, but when she heard one of her old hits on the radio while she was scrubbing, it inspired her to get back into performing full-time. Her appearance in the Oscar-winning 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom was memorable, especially when it addressed the way Spector promised her a solo career, but gave other singers credit for her work.
I recently talked to Darlene about her backup singing for Elvis, and how she feels about the King’s relationship to the music he both co-opted and celebrated.
Hi, Darlene. What is some of the gospel work you did with Elvis?
There is “Let Us Pray,” the one from the movie we did with Elvis, Change of Habit. That was his last film.
It was in 1969, with Elvis as a doctor and Mary Tyler Moore as a nun.
We, the Blossoms, are in the first scene. And we were in his 1968 comeback special [Singer Presents … ELVIS].
His new gospel compilation album should be quite interesting.
They [recently] had me do some fill-ins, what we call ad libs, throughout the album to make it sound more gospel. I haven’t heard it yet. Hopefully it’s a wonderful thing.
Elvis went to church and listened to gospel singers to soak up what they did, right?
Even today, it’s more mixed than it was in the Fifties and Sixties. Whites and blacks didn’t go to church together back then. What Elvis told me he would do — we had night service on Sunday night when we did what we called “praise songs.” A lot of them were songs he loved, what we called “hymn songs.”
We didn’t have air conditioners. We had pushup windows, with a little rope. Elvis said he would stand outside the church rather than going in, because they didn’t think black and white should be in the same churches together. He said he would listen through the windows. It gave him such a thrill. It’s a big difference between the way blacks sang gospel and the way whites sang gospel.
Do you feel he was dedicated to the music or he was just taking it for himself?
I found out years later, when we were doing the comeback special, that his mother’s favorite music was gospel. He would always sing gospel around her. I think if he could have had a big career in gospel music, that’s where he would have been. But you can always make more money off secular hits. Elvis had 10 or 15,000 people come to his shows to see him. Today, they have mega churches that hold 25,000, but back then, you were doing great if you had 500 people.
I bet they have air conditioning now.
Oh, lord, yes. [Laughs] I lived in Texas for five years as a young kid with my father, and it was so hot we couldn’t even breathe. There was no air conditioning in church or the house. What a difference it makes to have a cool ensemble. You still sweat because of the energy, but back then, we were soaking wet, when we sang in church.
I love gospel music. If I had a calling — meaning from the Lord — just to sing gospel, I would have, but the secular music got to more people. I bet a lot of secular singers like Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin felt the same way. They never paid us no money. “Do it unto the Lord.” “OK.” [Laughs] We would drive to the gigs and they’d give you an offering — gas money. They were hardly giving us a whole lot of money. But it was worth it, every penny of it. It was a wonderful experience singing gospel.
But was Elvis appropriating the music, or that’s just the way it was?
That’s just the way it was. A lot of people think a white person is copying the black person. He just loved the music and he was singing it the way he felt. He sang “Hound Dog” completely different than Mama Thornton. [Elvis’s version was rock, whereas Thornton’s was blues.] Even today, they take secular music and put it in gospel, and vice versa. You know, Elvis won three Grammys, and they were all for gospel records.
What were your experiences like with Elvis?
One time, Elvis decided we’d all go to the movies. He bought this theater out that night.
What did you watch — Change of Habit?
Don’t even ask me. I don’t remember. [Laughs] We had a lot of free time when we were recording and when we were making the movie. That’s when the Blossoms and myself got a chance to know the gospel side of Elvis. He’d want to know the songs we knew. He’d get his guitar and say, “You know this song?” “Yes, we grew up on it.” He’d say, “Let’s do it.”
Was he funny or serious?
He was funny and he was serious sometimes. If he didn’t think he was doing great, he’d say, “Hey, girls, how’m I doing?” He was very, very funny. I call it that “country funny.” He would do his moves in the studio the way he was gonna do them onstage. It made it easy to be around him, but sometimes it was not easy because his bodyguards were keeping people from him. He wanted to be with the Blossoms, where he could pull out his guitar. We’d say, “We think you’d better go. You’re gonna get us in trouble.” We’d never forget, because he’d be giving us his personal time.
You’d just be hanging out and singing?
Yes! Whatever song he knew — “Amazing Grace” or “River of Jordan” or “Heaven Is a Wonderful Place” or “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” We called them hymns of the church. There was another one called “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior.” The Blossoms were known for their harmony. We’d harmonize with him. There’s something we had with Elvis that others didn’t have. It was fun to be wanted by someone like Elvis Presley.
He had tremendous respect for you.
Yes, he did. That was great. I always say he left us way too soon. He is where I plan to go one day, so I’ll see him again.
You were all rather young and great-looking. Was there any sexual tension in the air?
There was. It could have been. But I was too scared to do anything.
You fool! [Laughs] Kidding. You wanted to keep it professional.
And I definitely did. Something about dating someone you’re working for, it takes away from that. “I know he’s never gonna look at me the same after this.” [Laughs] He’d start playing with me. He’d tap you on the shoulder or do a hip shake, and me and Elvis knew what that meant.
Flirting?
Yeah, I think so, and I think it showed his human side. I wasn’t bad-looking — and I was thin, too. [Laughs] He wanted to take out time and be around us. The reason we sang on his ’68 comeback special is he was the one that insisted that the Blossoms sing in the music section of the show.
So Elvis treated you better than Phil Spector did?
Oh my God, I’d say so.
That’s an easy one.
That’s a real easy one. Phil took advantage of me and my talent. With Elvis, he wanted us to work, and we got paid well. It wasn’t like Phil Spector cracking the whip and us running around!

Glenn locked the door behind him and Ophelia. Although why he was doing that when the lot was shielded, and even a low ranking spellcaster could break locks, he had no idea. Glenn walked to the opposite house. In there should be Phoebus, Miranda, Gillian and Pockets. As he approached he glanced through the window and saw that Miranda was in her usual spot in front of a device. The 25 year old witch understood technology better than anyone else he knew. Taking a deep breath he knocked on the door and entered as Miranda yelled out that it was open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glenn: Hey Miranda, is Phoebus in
Miranda: He's busy in the kitchen Glenn, not to be disturbed
Glenn: Did he actually say that
Miranda: Dude is way old, of course he phrased it like that
Glenn: How old is he
Miranda: I don't know... but I do know it's rude to ask anyone older than a century their age. I don't know why, like getting old is an achievement, especially for us
Tumblr media
Glenn: So... what are you doing
Miranda: Monitoring the message boards. I need to make sure no fans were following you to or from the hotel
Glenn: You're not serious. And I'm pretty sure I have no fans apart from myself and the watcher
Miranda sighed and leaned back in her chair. She conjured a small lightning ball in her hands and casually tossed it back and forwards like one might do with a stress ball.
Miranda: Man you must be messed up if you're not singing your own praises like normal. Howard says you're confident and you seemed it when we met. Anyway, the security here needs to be tight Glenn. We have enough problems with the parliament without you leading any hunters to our doorstep
Glenn: The humans outlawed hunting Miranda
Miranda: Oh they've outlawed a lot of stuff that still happens
The lightning ball disappeared and Miranda stretched her neck before moving back to her keyboard.
Miranda: Don't worry the coast seems clear
Gillian: GLENN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glenn: Aren't you a cat
Gillian: No silly, I'm me now. Miranda did you see Glenn is back
Miranda: This guy standing next to me? Nah, I was oblivious. He's super subtle
Gillian: *laughing* Be nice. You're meant to be a role model for me
Miranda: Welcome home Glenn. May I get you some tea and... crumpets?
Glenn: Ah... you said Phoebus is in the kitchen
Miranda: Fiddlesticks, I forgot that. Can I get you some imaginary tea and crumpets?
Tumblr media
Gillian: Miranda Miranda, how did you go while I was busy? Any progress?
Glenn: Dare I ask
Miranda: It's no problem. I've always understood electricity and computers so my pet project is trying to-
Gillian: She wants to make a computer without a computer
Miranda: Don't interrupt people unless there's like an emergency
Gillian: Sorry Miranda but it's exciting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glenn: I don't really get computers
The look Miranda gave Glenn in response was one of complete pity.
Miranda: Basically I'd like to conjure an interface that can connect to others but it's a long way off. I'm only just starting. I need to train with Harmony a lot, and probably Koko-
Gillian: And Carmine and Drusilla if you're unlucky
Miranda: Hey miss, don't be rude or I'll tell Phoebus
Gillian: *sighs* Tattletale
Tumblr media
Glenn: You can go easy on her can't you
Miranda: It is the role of unofficial sisters to be harsh. She's got a lot to learn and she can't learn if we don't correct her
Gillian: It's okay Glenn. I know she just wants me to be good. That's why she got me the new Amiyah album when I did the dishes for a whole week
Glenn: Who
Miranda: *sighs* You are so out of the loop of pop culture
Glenn: Yeah well out in the wilderness the bears don't care how many stars a person has
